Harley Hamilton, owner, welcomed community members and fellow downtown business owners who attended the event.

"Welcome to Red Fern Booksellers! Our mission is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all members of our community in which to nurture a love of reading, engage in thoughtful conversations, and foster empathy," Hamilton said.

Hamilton's decision to open a bookstore in Salina was fueled both by his love of reading, and the recent revitalization of downtown Salina.

"I've been a pharmacist for a long time but have always loved to read. Whether it's 30 minutes or an hour reading every day," Hamilton said. "I also love bookstores and I was getting tired of driving to Wichita or Lawrence. We needed one [a bookstore], the downtown area in Salina has recently been renovated, and then this building became available. We love this building."

"Big Open Book Club- there is no specific book to read," Hamilton said. "You just come hang out with other people who love books and talk about your favorite book, or what you are currently reading, and meet and mingle with other people who love to read."
