LINCOLN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Friday in Lincoln County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Suzuki M109 Boule driven by&nbsp; Joel&nbsp;McCosh, 25, Beverly, was eastbound on Kansas 18 a quarter mile east of Beverly.

The motorcycle struck the back passenger side of a westbound 2002 Chevy Silverado driven by George&nbsp;Salazar, 64, Beverly, that turned in front of the Suzuki.

EMS transported McCosh to Salina Regional Health Center. Salazar and a passenger in the pickup were not injured. McCosh was wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

Salina Regional Health Center and Ottawa County Health Center have entered into an agreement that will transition ownership of the COMCARE Minneapolis clinic to Ottawa County Health Center.

The clinic, which had leased space at Ottawa County Health Center, will become better operationally aligned with Ottawa County Health Center – improving financial performance and streamlining patient care within the organization. The move supports a number of operational efficiencies to be gained, improved communication between the clinic and hospital, and the opportunity to utilize one patient health record.

The transition will occur on July 1, 2023. The effort also allows Ottawa County Health Center to apply for Rural Health Clinic status, which receives enhanced reimbursement from government sponsored health insurance.

“The effort aims to create a sustainable model for healthcare in Minneapolis so people in Ottawa County can be assured access to services locally,” said Robert Freelove, M.D., senior vice president/chief medical officer at SRHC. “The goal is to hand over a fully intact, operational health clinic to Ottawa County Health Center. All current employees will keep their job, whether it be with OCHC or within Salina Regional Health Center’s system of clinics.”

Drs. Kenneth and Kermit Wedel started operating a clinic in Minneapolis in the 1960s that would later expand to provide services in Salina and eventually became COMCARE. COMCARE grew to become one of the largest family medicine clinics in the state. In 2013 COMCARE became an affiliate of Salina Regional Health Center.

“Our goal is to continue the long tradition of healthcare in Minneapolis by providing our community with access to necessary healthcare services in both the hospital and the clinic. This transition presents us with an opportunity to streamline and improve the patient experience and create a sustainable healthcare model to ensure services are available locally for the residents of Ottawa County. Both the hospital and clinic appreciate the support from our patients, and we look forward to continuing to serve our community,” said Jody Parks, Ottawa County Health Center administrator.

SRHC to transition ownership of COMCARE Minneapolis to Ottawa County Health Center

A pickup stolen from a north Salina business early Thursday was located in Ottawa County later in the day despite the thief's efforts to disable the vehicle communication system.

Officers were sent to L&amp;S Electric, 1051 W. Diamond Drive, for the report of a stolen white Chevrolet Silverado 3500 pickup. Surveillance showed a person dressed in all dark clothing approach the pickup at 3:15 a.m. and drive off in it a short while later, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

The pickup was valued at $65,000-$70,000, he said.

The pickup had an OnStar subscription service and the company reported to police that it had located the pickup at the Ottawa State Fishing Lake near Bennington. At approximately 10:30 a.m. Thursday, an Ottawa County Sheriff's deputy located the pickup at the lake, Forrester said. It was unoccupied.

Forrester said that approximately $1,800 worth of tools, mostly DeWalt power tools, were missing from the pickup.

In what was believed to be an attempt to disable OnStar, the thief had cut some wires under the dash, but only managed to disable the lights and some of the other functions of the pickup, Forrester said.

The pickup was returned to L&amp;S Electric, he said.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about multiple daytime burglaries

The other day, my wife and I discovered a Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) we’d forgotten about for over 10 years from my time in the Army. There’s a little over $3,200 in there. We’re both in our thirties, and we’re trying to save up our starter emergency fund in Baby Step 1 of your plan. We were wondering if we should withdraw the money and use it toward Baby Steps 1 and 2, or just leave it in there.

The best thing to do is roll the money over into an IRA. Otherwise you’re going to be hit with a 10% penalty—plus your tax rate—and end up paying 30% to 40% of it to the government. That’s kind of like asking, “Would it be a good idea to borrow $3,200 at 30% interest to pay off debt?” Of course not! That would be a really dumb idea. And in a sense, that’s what you’d be doing by just taking the money out of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/what-is-the-thrift-savings-plan" target="_blank">the TSP</a>.

It's not a ton of money, but conceptually, I hate the idea of giving the government 30% to 40% of&nbsp;my&nbsp;money just to get&nbsp;my&nbsp;money out. So yeah, do some research, find a good investment professional near you—one with the heart of a teacher—and roll it into an IRA.

The exhibition is scheduled for March 10 through April 9 in the gallery at 114 ½ S. Main Street. This exhibition celebrates local collectors of art, focusing on the stories behind their favorite works made by local artists.

A community reception for the exhibition is scheduled for March 12 from 2-4 p.m. at the center.

Entries are open to anyone in the USD 400 school district or with a 67456 mailing address who has a piece of Lindsborg art or craft in any medium and is willing to loan it and share its story for the exhibit. For this exhibit, the story is as important as the artwork. The story can reflect the Lindsborg art economy, when and how it was purchased or acquired. It could be about the unusual nature of the piece itself or a personal connection to the artist.

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a series of oilfield thefts have captured a suspect.

Just after 10 a.m. Tuesday, a sheriff's deputy stopped a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 42-year-old Lori Fiscus, according to Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir. After a routine check, it was discovered Fiscus had an outstanding warrant from Saline County for a probation violation. 

The passenger in the vehicle, identified as 29-year-old Kurt Woods, had outstanding warrants for failure to appear and contempt of court in Barton County and the City of Great Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Woods had been sought in connection with several oilfield thefts involving brass valves from tank batteries. Further investigation located methamphetamine inside the vehicle.

Deputies arrested Fiscus on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of methamphetamine and the warrant from Saline County. There is no bond on the Saline County warrant and a $10,000 bond on the possession of methamphetamine charge, according to Bellendir.

Woods was arrested on the two local warrants and requested charges of possession of methamphetamine as well as felony theft related to the oilfield incidents. Woods is being held on a $10,000 bond for the methamphetamine charge, $10,000 bond for felony theft, a warrant from the City of Great Bend for $1,642 and a warrant for Barton County District Court with a bond set at $500, according to Bellendir.

MANHATTAN – In small doses, anxiety might be a good thing, perhaps inspiring a person to act quickly in the face of danger, or think twice about a large expense.&nbsp;

But too much anxiety…not so much.&nbsp;

“The problem is when anxiety becomes debilitating and starts to interfere with our daily lives,” said Rachael Clews, a family and consumer sciences specialist at Kansas State University’s Southwest Research-Extension Center in Garden City.&nbsp;

“When anxiety becomes chronic and debilitating, it can lead to more serious mental health problems that require professional help.”&nbsp;

Clews and Jennifer LaSalle – a family and community wellness agent in K-State Research and Extension’s West Plains District – are the featured speakers during the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/fcs/livingwellwed/" target="_blank">Living Well Wednesday series</a>&nbsp;on Feb. 22.&nbsp;

Their talk, Declutter Your Mind: Tools to Tame Your Anxiety and Overthinking, will be held online from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. (CST). The session is free, but&nbsp;<a href="http://bit.ly/LWW2023" target="_blank">participants must register in advance</a>&nbsp;to receive a link to the online presentation.&nbsp;

“For most of us, overthinking is a negative thing where our minds conjure up every negative possibility for a situation,” Clews said. In the Feb. 22 presentation, “we’ll talk about how we can interrupt the overthinking and rewrite the script to move from negative to positive thoughts.”&nbsp;

Some of the coping strategies, she adds, include deep breathing, muscle relaxation and silent reflection. “And it may sound funny, but even scheduling an ‘overthinking time’ where you can set aside a specific time of the day or week to just overthink, can be productive,” Clews said.&nbsp;

“This gives validity to one’s feelings, but sets a time limit so that you don’t spiral down an ‘overthinking rabbit hole’ of no return. Once that time is up, make a plan to actually solve the problem you are experiencing.”&nbsp;

Anxiety, like depression, is a mood disorder. Clews said talking about mental health is becoming more common in society.&nbsp;

“If we can take the taboo out of talking about mental health like we would any other health condition, we’d empower so many more to seek the help they need,” she said. “Talking about it – including our own struggles – can go a long way in showing someone else that they are not alone and that there is hope to overcome their anxiety with the right help.”&nbsp;

Trombone Shorty, Ziggy Marley, Mavis Staples coming to Salina

Mike Brown is a former Johnson County commissioner, a failed primary candidate for GOP Secretary of State Scott Schwab’s job, and someone who has expressed sympathy for former President Trump’s lies regarding the 2020 election results. And as of last weekend, he is also the new chairperson of the Kansas Republican party. For those Republicans who want to forget election conspiracies and focus on their party’s substantive platform, this is probably frustrating.

It needs to be remembered that for many ordinary citizens across the country, the continued claims of voter fraud and rigged elections promoted by Trump make little sense. Recent polls show that election denialism has declined, and that only a third of those not already caught up in conspiracy theorizing say they find such paranoia understandable. In short, obsessing and nitpicking over close elections, especially in the wake of the attack on the Capitol in 2021 inspired by Trump’s loss, is increasing seen by many as pointless, dangerous, and strange.

Kansas Republicans, though, have a more complicated history with denialism. Long before Trump started ranting about how he was robbed—and started harassing GOP officials and his own vice-president to get them to support his lost cause—Kansas had Kris Kobach, who for years as Secretary of State focused less on his job than on prosecuting supposed illegal voters, leading to costly losses in court. Kansas Republicans, in short, have seen hysteria over election security overshadow their other responsibilities and priorities before.

Still, despite Kobach’s return to Topeka as Attorney General—after failing in races for governor and the U.S. Senate—many Kansas Republicans likely had reason to feel hopeful for the direction of the state party. Despite the closeness of his loss to Governor Kelly, Derek Schmidt left the stage without recriminations (and Kobach, securing his own very narrow win, said nothing about suing the governor). Schwab won re-election handily in the midst of national under-performance by Republicans, all while insisting the Kansas elections were secure and reliable. Perhaps they were shaking off the preoccupations of their former national leader?

Most rank and file Republicans in the state hopefully are. But some Kansas Republicans are unfortunately still obsessed with the idea, despite lacking any evidence, that nefarious actors are faking votes and corrupting election results. And now they have a state party chair on their side.

When running against Schwab in the Secretary of State GOP primary, Brown mocked his opponent for refusing to claim the same voter-hunting power Kobach had previously abused, insisted that all ballot drop-boxes should be banned, and implied that Schwab was at fault for not investigating outlandish, unsubstantiated claims about ballot-dumping and more. As party chair, he obviously won’t be involved in setting priorities for the Secretary of State, much less shaping voter legislation.  </figure>By&nbsp;RUSSELL ARBEN FOXMike Brown is a former Johnson County commissioner, a failed primary candidate for GOP Secretary of State Scott Schwab’s job, and someone who has expressed sympathy for former President Trump’s lies regarding the 2020 election results. And as of last weekend, he is also the new chairperson of the Kansas Republican party. For those Republicans who want to forget election conspiracies and focus on their party’s substantive platform, this is probably frustrating.It needs to be remembered that for many ordinary citizens across the country, the continued claims of voter fraud and rigged elections promoted by Trump make little sense. Recent polls show that election denialism has declined, and that only a third of those not already caught up in conspiracy theorizing say they find such paranoia understandable. In short, obsessing and nitpicking over close elections, especially in the wake of the attack on the Capitol in 2021 inspired by Trump’s loss, is increasing seen by many as pointless, dangerous, and strange.Kansas Republicans, though, have a more complicated history with denialism. Long before Trump started ranting about how he was robbed—and started harassing GOP officials and his own vice-president to get them to support his lost cause—Kansas had Kris Kobach, who for years as Secretary of State focused less on his job than on prosecuting supposed illegal voters, leading to costly losses in court. Kansas Republicans, in short, have seen hysteria over election security overshadow their other responsibilities and priorities before.Still, despite Kobach’s return to Topeka as Attorney General—after failing in races for governor and the U.S. Senate—many Kansas Republicans likely had reason to feel hopeful for the direction of the state party. Despite the closeness of his loss to Governor Kelly, Derek Schmidt left the stage without recriminations (and Kobach, securing his own very narrow win, said nothing about suing the governor). Schwab won re-election handily in the midst of national under-performance by Republicans, all while insisting the Kansas elections were secure and reliable. Perhaps they were shaking off the preoccupations of their former national leader?Most rank and file Republicans in the state hopefully are. But some Kansas Republicans are unfortunately still obsessed with the idea, despite lacking any evidence, that nefarious actors are faking votes and corrupting election results. And now they have a state party chair on their side.When running against Schwab in the Secretary of State GOP primary, Brown mocked his opponent for refusing to claim the same voter-hunting power Kobach had previously abused, insisted that all ballot drop-boxes should be banned, and implied that Schwab was at fault for not investigating outlandish, unsubstantiated claims about ballot-dumping and more. As party chair, he obviously won’t be involved in setting priorities for the Secretary of State, much less shaping voter legislation. Ben Folds scheduled to perform in Salina in August

Police are investigating another daytime residential burglary.

By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostPolice are investigating another daytime residential burglary.A 28-year-old Salina woman told police that she had left for an appointment at approximately 4:45 p.m. Wednesday. When she returned to her home in the 800 block of W. Republic Avenue approximately an hour later, she discovered that the family cat was shut in the basement, which it hadn't been before, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.The woman checked with her husband to see whether he had been home. He had not. When her husband got home, he discovered that his tan Smith &amp; Wesson M&amp;P Shield 9mm gun, a metal lock box, and some ammunition were missing, Forrester said. Also missing was a box with miscellaneous coins.Total loss was estimated at $460.Police are checking for surveillance video in the neighborhood.Forrester noted that this was the third or fourth recent daytime residential burglary in the general area. He said people need to make sure they are keeping their property locked.
