A veteran of the Smoky Hill River Festival Medallion Quest has won the 2023 quest.

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities announced this morning that Sheri Chase Jones had found this year's medallion. Her win was confirmed on Sunday.

According to information from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, this year's medallion is a "three-ounce artificially aged, rectangular glass bottle with a metal cap sealed with wax. Inside the bottle was a rolled piece of paper with the medallion information and the message 'You found it' inscribed so it could be seen through the glass. An artificially aged wire was wrapped around the neck of the bottle and used as a hook to hang from the grate."

The medallion was hung in a storm drain in the alley of the 100 block of N. Santa Fe Avenue between the rear entrance of Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House and the Townsite building.

On Sunday morning, Chase Jones waited for clue No. 8 to be released and then headed to the City Lights Stage at N. Santa Fe Avenue and W. Ash Street. The clue, "A great location" had her looking at grates and "Hanging down" directed her to downtown Salina. As she searched the alley behind Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House for the first time, she found a grate with a chain and pulled it to discover the medallion around 10 a.m. 

Chase Jones is no stranger to the Festival Medallion Quest and has participated for 11 years. She is the former director of finance for Global Spectrum and lived in Salina from 2012-2015. This year, her strategy was to stay calm and focused, "more thinking and less walking," she said.

Her son, Logan Jones, lives in Salina and was her partner in the search this year. She drove into town on Friday night, and they headed downtown to the intersection of N. Santa Fe Avenue and Ash Street. Chase Jones looked around Lakewood Park but kept heading back downtown. She used a mirror on an extending stick to aid her search.

Chase Jones is the 17th winner of the Festival Medallion Quest, which was started in 2009 by the Smoky Hill River Festival. 

"Never take the clues for face value," she said, sharing that she believes some clues describe the medallion itself. 

"Is this a thing or a place?" she asks herself. Or, "how can I twist this [clue] to be something different from what it appears to be?"

Chase Jones thinks about the FMQ all year long and counts down the weeks as she prepares in advance by working on word puzzles. She is a frequent art patron at the Smoky Hill River Festival and is excited to buy art with a larger budget than usual this year.

Chase Jones received a prize package of $1,000 in cash and $2,000 in gift certificates for shopping at the reiver festival Fine Art and Craft Show. Additionally, she received four festival admission wrist bands, a complimentary on-grounds VIP parking pass, an invitation for four to the Thursday evening PREMIERE Art Patron Party, and four 2023 river festival t-shirts.

Medallion Quest winner finds medallion hanging in a storm drain 

SM Hanson Festival Jam aficionados are in for a treat when the 37th annual jam takes the Eric Stein Stage June 8.

SM Hanson Music has added a 17th band to perform this year, according to Rick Hanson, CEO and president of SM Hanson Music, Inc. The new spot is by invitation, he said.

This year's invitation band is a group of musicians from Salina Central High School: Downtown Funk. The funk/pop group has 10 performers under the guidance of Guillermo Rodriguez, Central band director. The musicians include the following.

Downtown Funk is scheduled to kick off Festival Jam at 5:45 p.m. June 8.

"One more reason to arrive early on Thursday, June 8, for the SM Hanson Festival Jam – gates open at 4 p.m.," Hanson said.

The SM Hanson Festival Jam is a fast-paced evening of live music for all that opens the Smoky Hill River Festival.&nbsp;The Smoky Hill River Festival is scheduled for June 8-11 in Salina's Oakdale Park.

Last year, more than 13,000 people attended the SM Hanson Festival Jam, Hanson said.

Admission is by Smoky Hill River Festival wristband. The wristbands are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. Additionally, daily wristbands will be sold at the gate for $10 per person per day. Children ages 11 and under get in free.

6:30 p.m. The Radicles A Salina band playing a mix of eclectic rock. A four-piece band you will enjoy.

6:45 p.m. Don Wagner &amp; Friends Don and friends have played the Jam previously – always entertaining with a mix of country, rock, blues, and folk music.

7 p.m. Jon’Nea Soul New to the Jam – this Wichita-based four-piece band will play R&amp;B and soul music. There is a local connection to Salina. We are excited to hear them play at the 37th SM Hanson Festival Jam.

7:15 p.m. Ghost Town Revival First time at the Jam for this five-piece band. A Salina band playing classic rock and blues. Some of these guys have done this before.

7:30 p.m. Lix A band from the past – older now and yet... This original Salina three-piece band has added a bass player – so make that four-piece. These guys will play classic rock and blues.

7:45 p.m. The Opinions Forty years ago (so they say), these guys formed their band in Salina. Now, they have real jobs and live mostly in the Kansas City area. They played last year and we are glad to have them again.

8 p.m. Soul Preachers A Salina three-piece band – they have played the Jam previously, but it has been a few years. They play Roger Miller death shred metal – with Eric Copeland on drums.

8:15 p.m. Hey Radio A Wichita-based band – these guys lit it up in 2019 and 2022. We look forward to their mix of skate punk and pop (with a little energy).

8:30 p.m. Starslinger New to the Festival Jam, this three-piece band from Hays America has been playing dates around the Midwest for seven years. Get ready for alternative/psych/space rock – that’s right!

8:45 p.m. Dune Buggy These guys have played before. This Pet Project consists of five members playing together for several years. Their quick set will include rock and pop.

9 p.m. Northcutt A crowd favorite – five-piece Salina band playing red-dirt country/rock/blues.

9:15 p.m. Bootleg Mercy This four-piece band rocks! One magazine said “Kick-A__-Rock” from Kansas. These guys have multiple rock music award nominations. Revamped lineup since their last Jam in 2016 – something to see!

9:30 Steve Hanson &amp; Co. The founder – this is their 37th time at the Jam. Always a variety – always great.

9:45 p.m. The Blades This band has so many great players – it is really hard to count all of the people on stage! We hope to have enough room on stage.

SM Hanson Music adds 17th band to this year's Festival Jam

On May 23, 1984, Surgeon General C. Everett Koop issued a report saying there was "very solid" evidence linking cigarette smoke to lung disease in non-smokers.

One year ago: President Joe Biden said the U.S. would intervene militarily if China were to invade Taiwan. It was one of the most forceful presidential statements in support of Taiwan's self-governing in decades. Biden also launched a trade deal with 12 Indo-Pacific nations aimed at strengthening their economies as he warned Americans worried about high inflation that it is "going to be a haul" before they feel relief. Commissioners are scheduled to consider approving and signing an agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to receive funding for three bridge projects in southern Saline County.

KDOT awarded the county funds through thr Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program. According to information in the commission meeting packet, the program will fund 85 percent of construction costs up to $350,000. Saline County submitted a project to replace two bridges on W. McReynolds Road between S. Halstead Road and S. Fairchilds Road. The project would include removing the existing bridges and constructing a concrete low-water crossing at each location.

Additionally, the county was awarded a one-time payment of$50,000 for the removal of a bridge on W. Lapsley Road, just west of Old Highway 81. According to information from the county, this project also would remove the existing bridge and replace it with a concrete low-water crossing.

Other items on the Saline County agenda for Tuesday include the following.

●Consider approving as presented audited financial statements for 2022.

●Consider a request to purchase equipment and supplies for the new jail.

●Consider approving an agreement with North Central Juvenile Detention for architect funding as it applies to reuse of part of the current Saline County Jail.

The peak of summer travel across our nation’s highways is about to begin. The Kansas Highway Patrol and law enforcement partners across the state will have additional enforcement today through June 4 for the annual Click It or Ticket Campaign, which encourages seatbelt and child safety seat use for occupants of all ages.

“The Patrol is dedicated to helping save lives on Kansas highways. This campaign is not about citations; it is about saving lives. Buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in your vehicles.” said Colonel Herman T. Jones, superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol. “The KHP is dedicated to ensuring that the motoring public is safe while traveling through Kansas, and we will continue that commitment throughout the Memorial Day holiday.”

The Salina Art Center is hosting later this week an opening night reception for its summer exhibition: Point of View.

The reception is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Thursday in the Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe Avenue. Several artists are scheduled to be in attendance and offer brief comments beginning at 6 p.m.

Curated by Christine Olejniczak of Lawrence, Point of View features the works of four artists: Alicia Kelly of Lawrence; Becky Hyberger of Salina; Candace Hicks of Nacogdoches, Texas; and Mandy Bernard of Homer, Ark.

Point of View is scheduled for Wednesday through Sept. 3. Salina Art Center gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday; 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday; and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Point of View takes a cinematic look at dream fragments, crop circles, surveillance, and a world of light and shadows. Kelly presents an environment that welcomes visitors with a first-person experience, a reminder to call home, an invitation to pass through a patterned canopy of light - to feel small - to experience being out of scale with your surroundings. Wearable pieces, done in collaboration with Bernard, wrap the body inside the sculpture. The relationship with sculpture is personal.

In another gallery, Hicks suggests a story revealing that a fluffy, cumulus cloud is the main character of an inept plot of cover-up and violence. You are part of the surveillance team. You are outside of the action but an essential witness to the crime. Other narratives throughout the installation are scenes and objects based on information from unreliable sources that may or may not be true. Is that actual video of a crop circle being formed? It makes you wonder. Who is providing the information? How do you know what is true and what are the stories we tell ourselves? 

Hyberger shares a perspective gained through years of journaling her dreams. She is showcasing a piece that imagines that pillows can be storage containers for dreams. The dream fragments are created in miniature, at architectural scale so that we can look down on them. A transformation has occurred, and we are giants in the room. We are large and the dreams are small, fragile, easy to examine. We can talk about it now. We’ve changed our point of view and that story seems like a long time ago.

Opening reception for new exhibition Thursday at Salina Art Center

Kansas Department of Transportation began work Monday to resurface approximately 12.5 miles of U.S. Highway 81 in Ottawa County.

Work on U.S. 81 began just north of Kansas Highway 106 and will continue north to the Ottawa/Cloud County line.

Traffic will be reduced to one 16-foot lane at a reduced speed through the work zone. Drivers should expect minimal delays, not exceeding five minutes.

APAC-Kansas Inc. of Hutchinson is the prime contractor for this $5.2 million project, which is scheduled for completion in August, weather permitting.

Resurfacing project begins today on U.S. 81 in Ottawa County

One vehicle rolled during a wreck in north Salina Sunday evening.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that at approximately 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Harley Trent-White, 31, of Salina, was northbound on N. Santa Fe Avenue in a 2015 Lincoln MKC when he allegedly failed to stop at the Pacific Avenue stop sign and struck a westbound 2013 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Catherine Pickering, 66, of Salina. The impact caused the MKC to roll, Forrester said.

The MKC had damage to both sides and its top. The Equinox had damage to the front end. Both were removed by wrecker.

Forrester said Trent-White was cited for no proof of insurance and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Two Salina men face first degree murder charges in connection to the death of Jason Hilary Patrick Latham, 40, of Salina.

On May 8, a caller reported finding a body in the 1900 block of N. Fifth Street. Officers responded and found the remains of a person who appeared to have been dead for a number of days, the Salina Police Department noted in a news release that same day. On May 11, the remains were identified as those of Latham.

This morning, the Salina Police Department announced that arrests had been made in connection to Latham's death.

"During this lengthy investigation into the death of Jason Latham, detectives of the Salina Police Department were able to establish this case as a homicide. Detectives determined probable cause existed for the arrest of two involved persons. Both subjects, Johnathon Terrance Mullen and Kelly Ray Luthi, were charged on May 19, 2023. The Saline County Attorney’s Office worked with the detectives on this case," the department noted in a news release Monday morning.

According to information from the Salina Police Department, Mullen, 36, of Salina, faces a charge of first degree murder and Luthi, 39, of Salina, faces charges of first degree murder and aiding and abetting.

Two Salina men arrested in connection to murder of Jason Latham

A Lincoln man was injured early this morning during a rollover wreck on Interstate 135 just south of the Interstate 70 junction.

Kyle Breneman, 28, of Lincoln, was southbound on I-135 when his gray, 2007 Buick Lucerne entered the median and struck a guardrail, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. 

The wreck occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. Monday near milepost 95.

Breneman was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center.

Soldan said Breneman though he had fallen asleep.

Early Monday wreck on I-135 in Saline County injures Lincoln man

A north Salina liquor store was damaged Friday afternoon when someone trying to open the locked door punched it.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime between 12:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, someone broke the door glass at Countryside Liquor, 2448 N. Ninth Street. 

A review of surveillance video showed a white male with dark hair and wearing a black tanktop and blue jeans walk up to the liquor store and try to open the locked door. When he couldn't get it open, he punched the door, causing the glass to break. 

Damage was estimated at $1,000, Forrester said.

Police looking for man who broke door glass at north Salina liquor store

A local beekeeper has received a grant to study a potential late-summer food source that not only could help bees, but also be of use to cattle and humans.

The North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (NCR-SARE) announced last week that Allen Stovall from AJ Honey Farms, Salina, had received a $14,152 grant from NCR-SARE's Farmer Rancher Grant Program to study the use of a late summer perennial as a food source for honey bees.

Stovall, who operates AJ Honey Farms with his wife, Judy, said that they will be studying the use of Silphium Integrifolium, a part of the Aster (Sunflower) family.

"This flower blooms in the later part of summer from July into September. Honey bees have a hard time finding food during this time of the year. We call this a dearth," Allen told Salina Post. "For honey bees this means it's pretty much a desert during these months unless we can find alternatives to provide for them. Silphium is one of those potential alternatives."

The two-year grant project will have four feeding sites for bees.

"Our honey bees will have access to Silphium at two sites and two sites will not have any Silphium available. We will measure the production from each site and report our findings," he said.

Stovall noted that if the project successfully shows Silphium as a late-summer food source for honey bees, it would add to the perennial's uses. 

"We can use it as a supplement in cattle feed, the seeds from Silphuim can be used to extract human consumable cooking oil (similar to sunflower oil) and as beekeepers we want to see if the honey produced from Silphium can be a passive crop," Allen Stovall said.

The idea for the study was born from AJ Honey Farm's working relationship with The Land Institute.

"Ebony Murrell from The Land Institute came to us a few years ago to do pollination service for the Silphium plant and from that relationship, we have been able to put together a grant proposal that will help in further research," he said. "AJ Honey Farms LLC has been in collaboration with The Land Institute for about three years now in developing this research."

According to NCR-SARE, the grant "was awarded as part of NCR-SARE's Farmer Rancher Grant Program, a competitive grant program for farmers and ranchers who want to explore sustainable solutions to problems through on-farm research, demonstration, and education projects." The focus of each grant program is on research and education.

The study will be a two-year endeavor in 2023 and 2024.

"During this time we are looking to educate people about Silphium but we also want to help new beekeepers become educated with their new endeavor. We started out as hobbyists and fell in love with it so much that my wife, Judy, and I are making a career out of it," Allen Stovall said.

Indeed they are. The couple's store, at 901 N. Ninth Street, Suite A, in Salina has been open since October 2022.

"Thanks to our loyal customers and wonderful public support, it looks like we are here to stay," he said.

Salina beekeeper receives grant to study late-summer food source for honey bees

In a report just released this month, the National Academies of Sciences described how the U.S. is facing a substantial shortage of nonhuman primates (monkeys) to continue vital biomedical research. The record amount of research conducted over the last three years in the battle against COVID-19 has dramatically reduced the supply of animals critical to determining the effectiveness and safety of medications and vaccines.

The journal&nbsp;Science&nbsp;reports over two-thirds of the 200 scientists who use nonhuman primates have had difficulty obtaining monkeys, delaying and sometimes canceling their research. While this does not apply to rhesus macaques that are bred in the United States, the cynomolgus macaques that are mainly used in vaccine and drug safety research are imported from Southeast Asia, and that supply has drastically diminished, driving up prices. The Science report indicates that “the U.S. uses about 70,000 monkeys per year in studies of the brain, infectious disease, and aging...” and the E.U. uses about 5,000.

The N.A.S. report recommends expanding U.S. domestic breeding programs, but that will take considerable time during which much research would be delayed. Meanwhile, China—which had been a supplier of research monkeys prior to the pandemic—stopped exporting them as their research needs expanded rapidly. One researcher notes that if only China maintains the monkeys needed for drug and vaccine testing, China will then be the owners of the resulting drugs and vaccines.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The associate director of the Division of Animal Resources at Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University points out in Mother Jones that the lack of research primates is “...a threat for bio defense. It’s a threat for our economy. It’s a threat for our standing in research.”

In the recent frenzy over AI, animal rightists have wrongly asserted that there is no longer any need for biomedical research with animals, and that tissue cultures, computer simulations and chip technology can now replace the need for testing on actual animals. But this is not the case for the many thousands of new unique chemicals that are involved. The fact that the human body has an array of different organs that respond differently to drugs and vaccines, producing metabolic byproducts and an unpredictable range of reactions from benign to fatal, makes simplistic computer models and tissue cultures unable to detect both effectiveness of drug action and especially likely harms. Researchers are very aware that biology is laden with many such “emergent properties” that are not predictable and require actual testing.

Promotion of these ineffective alternatives has been a major effort of White Coat Waste, an animal rightist group founded in 2013, that has recently become more effective persuading some liberal and conservative legislators to stop federal funding of animal research. While such PETA-like efforts would never have gained traction many decades ago when more legislators came from farm and ranch backgrounds, some more-urbanized politicians of today have been more susceptible to these arguments based on the high costs of research and pollyanna ideas about the false potential of new technology.

Holder, director of pro-science Speaking of Research, points out how ending funding for animal research would not save taxpayers money. “Addiction, diabetes, and other diseases cost the public millions of dollars a year,” he says. “If taxpayers don't pay for this more basic research, they'll pay for the effects of not doing it.”
