A local man was arrested Wednesday evening after multiple objects were hit by a car near a Salina liquor store.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that Chris Chaney, 37, of Salina, was backing northbound in the alley behind Wholesale Liquor, 115 N. Ohio Street, Suite 100, in a 2007 Ford Focus when the Focus allegedly struck an Evergy transformer box on the ground, knocking off the passenger-side mirror.

Chaney then drove forward and went west down the alley, allegedly driving through a yard and striking a guy wire on a pole. He then allegedly backed up and struck a pole with a Cox Communication cable, before pulling forward and striking the pole again, Forrester said. Chaney then went westbound in the alley.

The collisions occurred at approximately 8:10 p.m. Wednesday.

A responding officer found Chaney in the 900 block of Johnstown Avenue and conducted a traffic stop. The Focus he was driving had significant passenger-side damage, Forrester said.

After an investigation, Chaney was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Salina man faces charges after car strikes multiple objects

Students at&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;were not only dedicated to their studies this past year but also spent countless hours giving back to the Salina community with a long list of volunteer efforts. At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, K-State Salina leadership challenged campus members to become more involved and push themselves to find community-service projects to give back. Many students at K-State Salina took that challenge to heart, and they led or participated in more than 20 community service projects over the academic year. While some projects were small, others took significant time to organize and find student volunteers to complete. Much of that organization came from K-State Salina's Student Governing Association,&nbsp;or SGA, and Charlie Kiehlbauch,&nbsp;sophomore in professional pilot,&nbsp;Fort Worth, Texas, who serves&nbsp;in&nbsp;the community service cabinet position on SGA. While Kiehlbauch&nbsp;participated&nbsp;in many of the outreach efforts, he spent even more time putting together opportunities for students to&nbsp;volunteer&nbsp;by becoming a liaison to the community. "I talked with SGA leadership, and we decided to create a position within the organization to spearhead our campus-led volunteer efforts,"&nbsp;said Kiehlbauch.&nbsp;"If someone in the community needed volunteers, they could reach out to me, and I helped organize the student body to give back and participate. I also wanted to focus on planning big events to make them even more impactful." Many of the efforts that Kiehlbauch&nbsp;organized&nbsp;revolved around the K-State Salina campus and helping fellow students. There were other efforts, however, that allowed the students to get involved in the community. These efforts&nbsp;included assisting students at Sunset Elementary School in Salina&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-12/salina-giving-tree-project122122.html" target="_blank">Giving Tree</a>&nbsp;volunteer project, where students, faculty and staff at K-State Salina donated gifts to elementary students and their families. Another volunteer effort was STEM Night at&nbsp;Sunset Elementary School.&nbsp;Several&nbsp;of&nbsp;K-State Salina's student clubs&nbsp;visited the school to share more about K-State Salina with the students. Organizations that participated&nbsp;include the&nbsp;Flight Team, Women's Air Race Classic,&nbsp;Women in Aviation, the&nbsp;Uncrewed Aircraft Systems Club&nbsp;and&nbsp;the campus's Upward Bound&nbsp;program. Kiehlbauch said&nbsp;that the&nbsp;February&nbsp;event was a success. "Students came out and cooked some hot dogs and served popcorn with lemonade. We also had hands-on booths where students and their families could see and use some of our flight simulators, UAS equipment and more,"&nbsp;said&nbsp;Kiehlbauch.&nbsp;"The Sunset students got to go to the booths and learn about STEM education. Seeing all the cool things that our students get to use every day, I think, really excited and motivated the younger elementary students." Kiehlbauch wasn't the only one giving back at K-State Salina this past school year. Students from the campus's Alpha Eta Rho, an international co-ed aviation fraternity with more than 40 members on the campus, participated in six different&nbsp;service&nbsp;projects this past year. The projects ranged from helping first-year students move into the residence halls on campus in August to giving back to Salina businesses and organizations. Their tasks included volunteering at the Garage Automotive Museum and the Smoky Hill Museum&nbsp;street&nbsp;fair and&nbsp;parade. "This year, our fraternity members sat down and decided that we wanted to be a fixture in the Salina community more than ever," said&nbsp;Jack Valdez, senior in professional pilot,&nbsp;Olathe.&nbsp;"It was rewarding to get involved in the community this year and be a part of an organization that truly cares." Outside of giving back to the Salina community, these volunteer efforts also helped reinforce time management skills&nbsp;for&nbsp;K-State Salina students. Kiehlbauch&nbsp;said he&nbsp;recalls having to focus on&nbsp;these skills&nbsp;during&nbsp;the school year. On top of organizing numerous volunteer events, he is also a full-time student taking flight blocks and courses to become a pilot. Even with the long hours, Kiehlbauch said&nbsp;his experience from this past year was well worth the effort. With the sense of pride that has grown from this past year, we expect the number of hours and projects to continue to grow in the future."

K-State Salina students spend time giving back to local community

We liberal Christians are used to being overlooked.&nbsp; I was reminded of this the other day while discussing religion and politics with an otherwise smart, worldly, well-read former student who had never heard of liberal Christianity.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Liberal Christians are woven into the fabric of Kansas and American history.&nbsp; Without us, there might never have been an abolitionist or a civil rights movement.&nbsp;

Kansas Reflector reporters Sherman Smith and Rachel Mipro are trying to give us our due.&nbsp; Their recent series about religious faith and Kansas politics focuses on the Kansas Legislature’s 2023 session, particularly the priorities of fundamentalist, evangelical Christians.&nbsp; These include criminalizing abortion, mandating discrimination against LGBTQ persons, “parents’ rights,” promotion of religious schools instead of public ones, and attacks on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

For balance, Smith and Mipro relied heavily on interviews with Rep. Tobias Schlingensiepen, a Topeka Democrat and United Church of Christ (UCC) Pastor.&nbsp; Schlingensiepen spoke of an inclusive church, the difference between personal faith and public legislation, representing the powerless, rejecting violence, and economic justice.&nbsp; Being UCC myself, I know all too well the tendency for people of faith to be stereotyped as anti-LGBTQ and as preoccupied with criminalizing abortion.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We believe that following the entire Bible literally is impossible.&nbsp; As A.J. Jacobs notes in The Year of Living Biblically, the Bible commands believers to avoid eating shellfish or wearing mixed-fiber clothing, for example, and men must not shave their beards.&nbsp; Those who do not keep the Sabbath holy are to be executed by stoning.&nbsp; Liberal Christians respond by focusing on what UCC theologian Marcus Borg called The Heart of Christianity–Jesus’ teachings through word and example.&nbsp; These teachings include humility, kindness, refraining from judging others, inclusiveness, economic justice, nonviolence, and speaking truth to power.&nbsp; If one does truly seek to follow the Bible as literally as possible, small, close-knit faith traditions such as Hasidic Jews or the Amish probably come the closest–but even they do not stone Sabbath-breakers.

Liberal Christians are not exclusively pro-choice. Some predominantly African-American Protestant churches and some Catholic congregations believe and practice the social justice gospel but also oppose abortion, for example.&nbsp; However, the UCC denomination and many other liberal Christians are openly, avowedly pro-choice.&nbsp; In an open letter published last year in the Wichita Eagle and signed by numerous UCC, United Methodist, and other clergy, these leaders called for Kansas voters to reject last year’s attempt to criminalize abortion, which they did.&nbsp; They argued that the Bible holds a woman’s body and her autonomy to be sacred.&nbsp; Not to be confused with being “pro-abortion,” the UCC and Unitarian Universalist Association co-publish Our Whole Lives, a sex-education curriculum for children and adults alike celebrating our bodies and calling for open communication, family planning, scientifically and medically accurate facts, and affirmative consent.&nbsp;

Must-read authors include Reinhold Niebuhr, who popularized the Serenity Prayer and influenced Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and several Presidents.&nbsp; Scholar Elaine Pagels has closely studied the Gnostics, early Christians whose unique understanding of the faith gives insights into the Christianity’s early days.&nbsp; Finally, the Jesus Seminar’s Five Gospels offers offers a historically-grounded reading of the traditional four gospel stories, plus the recently-discovered Gospel of Thomas.

Liberal Christians may not fit the stereotype, but we remain an active, ongoing part of Kansas’ civic culture and religious life.

INSIGHT KANSAS: What is a liberal Christian?

Today is Thursday, May 25, the 145th day of 2023. There are 220 days left in the year.

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a Black man, was killed when a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee on Floyd's neck for about 9 1/2 minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and pleading that he couldn't breathe; Floyd's death, captured on video by a bystander, would lead to worldwide protests, some of which turned violent, and a reexamination of racism and policing in the U.S.

In 1787, the Constitutional Convention began at the Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall) in Philadelphia after enough delegates had shown up for a quorum.

In 1946, Transjordan (now Jordan) became a kingdom as it proclaimed its new monarch, Abdullah I.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy told Congress: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth."

A student opened fire in a classroom at a suburban Indianapolis middle school; the student was tackled and disarmed by a teacher, Jason Seaman, who was shot three times as he ended the shooting, which also seriously wounded a 13-year-old girl. President Donald Trump signed a trio of executive orders to overhaul the federal bureaucracy by making it easier to fire federal workers for poor performance and misconduct. By a two-to-one margin, voters in Ireland chose to repeal a constitutional ban on abortion.

One year ago: Texas Governor Greg Abbott said that 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, the gunman who massacred 19 children and two teachers at an Uvalde elementary school a day earlier, warned in online messages sent minutes before the attack that he had shot his grandmother and was going to shoot up a school. Ramos was killed by police. Former reality TV star Josh Duggar was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison on child pornography charges. Harold Billow, the last known survivor of a World War II POW massacre during the Battle of the Bulge, died at age 99. The run will make stops in Gypsum, Salina, Brookville, Kanopolis, and Marquette before returning to Post 140 in Lindsborg.

Registration is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Post 140, 524 E. State Street in Lindsborg. The cost is $30 per person.

American Legion Riders Post 140 Poker Run Saturday

Twenty new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on Friday in a ceremony held in KLETC's Integrity Auditorium. KLETC Police Instructor Senior Mike Satterlee was the class coordinator for the graduating class, and the commencement speaker for the ceremony was Douglas County Sheriff Jay Armbrister.

A graduate of KLETC's 155th basic training class, Sheriff Armbrister discussed with the graduates the job, and its impact on him and the ones he loves. "If you do this job the right way and for the right reasons you are going to be a changed person," said Armbrister. "It only hurts if you care, and we don't want you if you don't care." 

Armbrister emphasized the need for maintaining self-care and reaching out to others when struggling. 

"In order to do what you do and do it well you have got to take care of you. Take care of yourself mentally but also look out for those around you," he said.

Armbrister shared some of his struggles over the course of his career and attributes his success today to those who were looking out for him when he needed them most.

Under the authority of Executive Director Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting to the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority.

Galva&nbsp;– Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Jeremy Bower, 35th Infantry Division, will give the invocation at a Memorial Day Remembrance at Empire Cemetery 1145 22nd Ave. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m.

McPherson&nbsp;– Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Jeremy Bower, 35th&nbsp;Infantry Division, will deliver the invocation at a Memorial Day Remembrance at Crestwood Memorial Park, 1444 County Road 448 (Pawnee Rd.) Kansas National Guard to support Memorial Day events in area

In 1990, four tornadoes struck central Kansas, of which two were strong F3s. 

One F3 tornado, with a track 26 miles long and three fourths of a mile wide, barreled through Barton, Rice and Ellsworth counties. Six were injured. Eighty eight cars of a 125-car freight train were derailed. In some cases, the freight cars were stacked 3 to 4 cars high. It caused around $500,000 damage. 

The second F3 tornado, believed to have touched down multiple times, raced 60 miles across Rice, McPherson and Marion counties and was around 450 yards wide. This tornado also got on the 'wrong track' as it too, hit a freight train, derailing 87 of 103 cars. There was nearly $3 million damage in McPherson and Marion counties alone.

In 1962, severe thunderstorms hit Reno and Harvey counties with a barrage of hail that reached four inches in diameter. The giant hail caused around $1 million damage just southwest of Hutchinson alone. Both counties were also hit by an F3 tornado. The Reno County twister injured six between Nickerson and Hutchinson. The Harvey County tornado moved very erratically along a 10-mile track. The width is unknown, but the twister destroyed two gas stations and several trailers, then lifted at the southwest edge of Newton.&nbsp;&nbsp;

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly today announced more than $8.8 million from the Kansas High-Risk Rural Roads (HRRR) Program will go to 19 rural counties to improve the safety and efficiency of roads and local roadways.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"These investments will keep roads in rural areas safe and easy to travel, something that’s essential to supporting local businesses and making life better for Kansas families,” Kelly said.

The HRRR program is a federally funded initiative designed to improve safety on rural roads through state and local partnerships. This year’s 19 HRRR projects were selected from 50 applications seeking $30.3 million in federal funds. Kansas HRRR funds cover 90-100 percent of the total project cost, with the counties making up the difference if necessary.

“Local agencies often do not have the resources needed to adequately address safety problems on the roads they own and operate,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Acting Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed. “Working together provides opportunities for communities to strengthen their local road network to improve connections across the state.”&nbsp;

Projects in this program fall into one of two categories: Systemic (encompassing a local roadway network) or Site Specific. Projects in the Systemic category are 100% federally funded, and Site Specific projects are 90% federally funded.&nbsp;

The distribution of the $8,809,000 in HRRR funds is listed below. Funds are for Federal Fiscal Year 2025:

Barton County, Systemic, $171,000 Upgrade signing on all major collectors in the SW quadrant of the county.

Cherokee County, Systemic, $400,000 Upgrade signing on all major collectors in the west half of the county.

Cowley County*, Site Specific, $601,000 Widen driving lanes, flatten ditch foreslopes, and install 6-inch white edge lines on 3 miles of paved major collectors.

Crawford County, Site Specific, $682,000 Add SafetyEdgeTM, flatten ditch foreslopes, and install 6” white edge lines on S. 200th&nbsp;Street.

Ellis County, Systemic, $595,000 Determine passing zones: add “No Passing” pennant signs and appropriate centerline pavement markings and install 6-inch white edge lines on 126 miles of paved major collectors throughout the county.

Ellsworth County, Systemic, $345,000 Upgrade signing on all major collectors west of K-156 in the county.

Finney County*, Site Specific, $546,000 Add 2-foot shoulders with SafetyEdgeTM, eliminate fixed obstacles, and install 6-inch white edge lines on Maple Street.

Graham County, Systemic, $310,000 Upgrade signing on 101 miles of unpaved major collectors in the west half of the county.

Harper County, Systemic, $362,000 Upgrade signing on 90 miles of major collectors west of K-14 in the county.

Kearny County, Systemic, $236,000 Upgrade signing on 78 miles of major collectors north of U.S. 50 in the county.

Leavenworth County*, Site Specific, $1,151,000 Add 6-foot shoulders with SafetyEdgeTM, install edge rumble strips, and extend culverts to improve the clear zone on Tonganoxie Drive between 189th&nbsp;and 187th&nbsp;streets.

Linn County*, Site Specific, $351,000 Install hazard/curve signage and 6-inch white edge lines on Route 1095 between 1650 Road and K-152.

Kelly announces more than $8.8M for rural road safety improvements

A local woman was arrested on a requested charge of felony theft after she allegedly stole a tow truck in north Salina Tuesday night.

An employee of A&amp;A Towing had parked a 2012 Freightliner M2 in the alley of the 1100 block of N. 10th Street and went inside a residence, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported Wednesday. The keys were left in the truck as the employee had planned to stop for only a minute.

Forrester said that Delilah Ross, 35, of Salina, was walking and allegedly saw the keys in the ignition and drove the truck a short distance away.

Officers located the truck with Ross inside near the intersection of N. Fifth Street and E. Euclid Avenue, Forrester said.

Ross was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

The truck, which was valued at $65,000, was returned to A&amp;A Towing, he said.

BELLEVILLE - The City of Belleville has issued a notice of an elevated nitrate level in the city water supply.

In a notice posted on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064543488715">City of Belleville Kansas Facebook page</a> late Wednesday morning, the city warned that water from the city system should not be given to infants under the age of six months and should not be used to make infant formula.

The city indicated that a water sample collected on May 8 showed a nitrate level above the federal nitrate standard.

"Nitrate in drinking water can come from natural, industrial, or agricultiure sources (including septic systems and run-off). Levels of nitrate in drinking water can vary throughout the year.We'll let you know when the amount of nitrate is again below the limit. In the meantime, bottled water is being provided for vulnerable populations," the city noted.

●Do not give water to infants. Infants below the age of six months who drink water containing nitrate in excess of the maximum contaminant level could become seriously ill and, if left untreated, may die. Symptoms include shortness of breath and blue baby syndrome. Blue baby syndrome is indicated by blueness of the skin. Symptoms can develop rapidly, with health deteriorating over a period of days. If symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately.

●Water, juice, and formula for children under six months of age should not be prepared with tap water. Bottled water or other water low in nitrates should be used for infants until further notice.

●Do not boil water. Boiling, freezing, filtering, or letting water stand does not reduce the nitrate level. Excessive boiling can make the nitraters more concentrated, because nitrates remain behind when the water evaporates.

●Adults and children older than six months can drink the tap water (nitrate is a concern for infants because they cannot process nitrates in the same way adults can). However, if you are pregnant or have specific health concerns, you may wish to consult your doctor.

ABILENE - Mark your calendars! The annual Symphony at Sunset D-Day Commemoration event is June 3.

Located on the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, the outdoor event will feature live music from the Salina Symphony, the Fort Riley 1st Infantry Division Band, and local band Everyday Lights.

The free event is open to all ages and pays tribute to members of the Greatest Generation and their sacrifices during World War II. 

Seating will not be provided. Those attending are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets.

The schedule for the day's activites is as follows.

10 a.m.: Free entry into museum begins

4 p.m.: Food vendors and educational activities begin

5 p.m.: Second annual Thank a World War II Veteran reception begins in the Visitor's Center.

6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.: The Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard is scheduled to perform their cavalry tactics demonstrations.
