TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory update due to blue-green algae. 

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. If you, or your dog, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water. Suspected HAB-related health incidents, whether human or animal, regardless of season, should be reported at kdhe.ks.gov/1163.

The state of Kansas recognizes three advisory levels: 

A Hazard status indicates that a harmful algal bloom is present, and extreme conditions exist. Signage should be posted at all public access locations. It is recommended that either a portion of the lake or the entire lake or zone, be closed to the public.

In some cases, the adjacent land should be closed as well. Actual setback distances will be determined on a site-specific basis, if necessary. When partial closures (i.e., beach or cove) are issued, the remaining lake or zone area will carry a warning status.

A Warning status indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure.  Contact with the waterbody should be avoided. 

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken: 

Signage should be posted at all public access locations.

Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful.

Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.  

Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.  

Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.  

If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.  

Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.  

A Watch status means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water. 

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions&nbsp;be taken:

Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water. 

Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms. 

Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact. 

Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only. 

Advisories are Lifted when cell densities and toxin concentrations dissipate to levels below the Watch thresholds.

KDHE investigates publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.  

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

On this episode of "King in the Community" I sit down with screenwriter and Salina local, Ed Harlowe to discuss a screenplay he has written that could possibly be filmed right here in Salina.

The heartfelt and hilarious movie, "FRED", is the story of an older gentleman whose name is, you guessed it, Fred.&nbsp;

The film spins a compelling tale of love and laughter during the later years of life.

FRED, a refreshing and unique comedy, explores the journey of a former class clown, whose life takes an unexpected turn when he suffers a heart attack.&nbsp;

While&nbsp;he recuperates in a nursing home, he meets the love of his life, Mary, and the two embark on an unforgettable adventure. According to Harlowe the story is punctuated by sharp, witty and unforgettable one-liners, as it also shines a light on the struggles and triumphs in the twilight years.

The movie's backdrop will look especially familiar for Salina locals. Harlowe said several locations in Salina are &nbsp;expected to be featured in the movie. Locations include the Walmart, a nursing home, the downtown area and more.

Harlowe told Salina Post he is wanting Ted Danson to play the role of FRED. He also said if the film is given the green light, &nbsp;there will be a casting call for the film-giving locals a chance to be part of telling Fred’s story.&nbsp;

Directed by the accomplished Shedrack Anderson Ill, FRED promises a heartwarming, hilarious, and poignant cinematic experience. However, due to the current writers' strike and subsequent delays, the movie's production is on hold for now.

 In this episode we'll uncover the inspiration behind this captivating story, and explore the vibrant characters that will make FRED a must-watch movie.&nbsp;

King in the Community: Ed Harlowe, local screenwriter

Each year during the third week in July, Zoos across the country celebrate National Zoo Keeper Appreciation Week. This year, to help show their appreciation for all the things zookeepers do to ensure animals are safe and taken care of, Rolling Hills Zoo partnered with Salina Downtown Inc. (SDI) for a "Great Escape."

"Some 'animals' from Rolling Hills Zoo have 'escaped' and we need YOU to help us spot them," said SDI Executive Director Leslie Bishop. "It has been reported that all of them have 'escaped' to downtown Salina."

A total of 15 plush toy zoo animals are hiding in various storefronts in Downtown Salina. Before you begin your excursion to find the "escaped" animals, stop by SDI's office, or Children's Creations,&nbsp; for a Safari Log Book.&nbsp;

You will use your logbook to document where each "animal" is located.

Once you have located all the hidden animals, bring your full log book back to the Salina Downtown Office and deposit it in the box located outside their door.&nbsp;

Bishop said logbooks can also be picked up at Kid's Creative Corners, 122 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Salina Public Schools Plans Two Mini Job Fairs Before School Begins

MANHATTAN, Kansas — Producers and landowners who install enduring conservation practices may qualify to receive financial assistance for these projects through a voluntary cost share program. The FY 2024 state cost share program for conservation practices is underway to encourage projects that improve water quality and quantity. Funding is provided by the Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Conservation (KDA–DOC) through appropriation from the State Water Plan Fund and the program is administered by Conservation Districts across the state.

Landowners and producers with natural resource concerns on their property are encouraged to visit their local Conservation District office to discuss the possibility of receiving state financial assistance. Along with the annual funding, additional funding is available this year to landowners and producers interested in eligible water resources practices such as irrigation water management, nutrient management, planting cover crops, livestock water supplies, cross fencing, and abandoned well plugging.

Landowners and producers who are approved for the program will be notified of the practice(s) approval and the estimated amount of cost-share that will be provided. Projects started or completed prior to being approved for funding by individual districts and KDA–DOC are not eligible for these funds.

Applications for cost share funds must be made through local Conservation Districts; please contact your district office for details about funding eligibility. Cost Share Program Available to Encourage Conservation Practices

TOPEKA-Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Jun2023%20SA%20Rate%20Chart%20File.pdf">seasonally adjusted unemployment rate</a>&nbsp;of 2.8% in June. This is a decrease from 2.9% in May and an increase from 2.6% in June 2022.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 1,000 from May. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers.&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Jun2023%20SA%20PrivateEmpl%20Chart%20File.pdf">Private sector jobs</a>&nbsp;increased by 300 over the month, while government increased by 700.

Since June 2022&nbsp;Kansas'&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/Uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Jun2023%20Seasonally%20Adj%20PR%20Packet.pdf">seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs</a>&nbsp;have increased by 31,900. This change is due to an increase of 27,200 private sector jobs and an increase of 4,700 government jobs.

“Kansas estimates for both monthly labor market surveys indicate little change in May,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “The survey of employers shows no significant change in job estimates over the month. While the survey of households indicates a small increase in employment, there was no change in the unemployment rate at 2.9%.”

Since May 2022 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 31,800. This change is due to an increase of 26,600 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,200 government jobs.

"After remaining unchanged for seven consecutive months, the Kansas unemployment rate declined in June to end the second quarter at 2.8%. This is an increase from 2.6% one year ago, but is still one of the lowest unemployment rates recorded in the State of Kansas," said Amber Shultz, Kansas secretary of labor.&nbsp;

 </figure>Kansas Department of LaborTOPEKA-Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Jun2023%20SA%20Rate%20Chart%20File.pdf">seasonally adjusted unemployment rate</a>&nbsp;of 2.8% in June. This is a decrease from 2.9% in May and an increase from 2.6% in June 2022.Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 1,000 from May. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers.&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Jun2023%20SA%20PrivateEmpl%20Chart%20File.pdf">Private sector jobs</a>&nbsp;increased by 300 over the month, while government increased by 700.Since June 2022&nbsp;Kansas'&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/Uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Jun2023%20Seasonally%20Adj%20PR%20Packet.pdf">seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs</a>&nbsp;have increased by 31,900. This change is due to an increase of 27,200 private sector jobs and an increase of 4,700 government jobs.“Kansas estimates for both monthly labor market surveys indicate little change in May,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “The survey of employers shows no significant change in job estimates over the month. While the survey of households indicates a small increase in employment, there was no change in the unemployment rate at 2.9%.”Since May 2022 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 31,800. This change is due to an increase of 26,600 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,200 government jobs."After remaining unchanged for seven consecutive months, the Kansas unemployment rate declined in June to end the second quarter at 2.8%. This is an increase from 2.6% one year ago, but is still one of the lowest unemployment rates recorded in the State of Kansas," said Amber Shultz, Kansas secretary of labor.&nbsp;

&nbsp;This Saturday, July 22, Jeff Wells Agency, Inc. – American Family Insurance is throwing their 1st&nbsp;Annual Kick It For A Cause Kickball Tournament at The Yard, benefitting Salina Area United Way on the day of the event. Games at the event will start at 9:00am on Saturday and run all day through 6:00pm that evening. The event is open to the general public to watch, enjoy, and participate in activities occurring throughout the day.

During Kick It For A Cause, eight kickball teams will compete for the title of the 2023 Kickball Champion. Eight local businesses stepped up to the plate this year to participate in the tournament, including: Bank of Tescott, Bennington State Bank, Equity Bank, First Bank Kansas, Great Plains Manufacturing, Kansas Wesleyan University, SalinaHomes.com, and Salina Regional Health Center. An official bracket will be announced this week on both organization’s Facebook pages for the public to see when certain businesses are playing and to come support.

“We are excited to join together with Salina Area United Way for this year’s 2023 Kickball Tournament, says Jeff Wells, Agent and Agency Owner of Jeff Wells Agency, Inc. – American Family Insurance. “Not only is this a great event for the public to get involved in, but the money is going to directly support our community. Outside of kickball games, American Family Insurance and Salina Area United Way will have other activities and entertainment at The Yard throughout the day for the community to come enjoy. Taco’s Food Truck will be donating 10% of the proceeds from the day of the event back to Salina Area United Way. Kick it for a Cause Kickball Tournament to Benefit Salina Area United Way

Beginning Monday, July 24, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be replacing sections of the roadway from a prior utility repair at the corner of Neal Avenue and Ohio Street. Neal Avenue will be closed to thru traffic during working hours and traffic will be detoured to Scott Avenue.

Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within four to five days.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Nobody likes getting bombarded with robocalls. Not only are they annoying, but they’re often pushing scams for things like fake auto warranties and credit card debt relief programs. The FTC and law enforcement agencies from all 50 states are taking action to stop them. And you can help, too.

Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Honeydew…Oh My! When should you harvest melon?

Harvesting melons at the perfect time is crucial to the best eating experience. Melons will have the highest sugar content if allowed to ripen fully on the vine, Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini said.

“When cantaloupes are ready for harvest they will easily separate from the vine,” Domenghini said.

If melon is ripe, Domenghini said by putting pressure on the fruit where the vine attaches, the fruit will slip off with a dip-shaped depression in the fruit. Twisting the stem to force separation indicates the melon is not ready.

“Additionally, the skin of the (ripe) melon should begin to show yellowing, instead of solid green during immaturity,” Domenghini said. “A ripe cantaloupe should have a musky fragrance and the end of the fruit opposite where the vine is attached should be soft.”

Domenghini said cantaloupe can be stored in a refrigerator for two weeks.

Watermelons are ready to harvest when the underside of the fruit changes from green-white to yellow. The melon will appear more dull, rather than glossy green, Domenghini said.

“The tendril attaching the fruit to the vine will turn black when the fruit reaches maturity,” Domenghini adds.

To harvest, separate the fruit from the vine by cutting the tendril, but leave about two inches still attached to the fruit. Store freshly harvested watermelons at room temperature for one week or in 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit for two to three weeks.

“Honeydew melons do not easily pull away from the stem when ripe,” Domenghini said.

Instead, she recommends relying on the change in color of the fruit from pale green to light yellow; the softening spot on the fruit opposite from where the vine attaches; and the aroma coming from the fruit.

“Honeydews can be stored for two weeks at 50 F,” Domenghini said.

Salina Downtown: Kids’s Creative Corner’s Story Read at 1 p.m. Friday

This is day 14 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Up and down the Colorado border, wheat producers are working to finish up harvest. The northwestern corner of the state was among the few that received moisture last fall, snow this winter and rain this spring, leading to better yields than many other areas of the state. In contrast, the southwest corner of the state is faring poorer with high rates of abandonment and declining conditions for wheat left standing in the field. Universally, moisture in the air continues to delay cutting, extending harvest well beyond a normal pace.&nbsp;

Jason Ochs of Hamilton County had to abandon about 60 percent of his wheat this year due to the drought. On the remaining acres, he is averaging yields of about 20 bushels per acre. He did have one field that was adjusted at 0.3 bushels per acre, but it started raining in April before he got it destroyed, so he will harvest it, saying that it might make 15 bushels per acre. Test weights are averaging 58 to 59 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;

Ochs grows both hard red winter (HRW) and hard white (HW) wheat. Both classes are shattering due to wind and hail. One of his fields had 50 percent loss after four separate hail events and has been hailed on twice since then.

He said the majority of the area had a hard time getting fall crops in due to excessive rains in May and June, so wheat acres should be up this fall. His mantra is, “You have to take advantage of the opportunity when there is moisture” — even if it messes up the crop rotation a bit.

“Residue is big-time cash as far as I’m concerned,” Ochs said.

Harvest began on July 3 and 4, but rains came in, keeping them out of the fields for several more days. Ochs noted that it is difficult to find help because of the late harvest, and he currently has one combine sitting because he has no one to run it. Weed pressure, moisture and humidity — not common issues during harvest in this part of the state — mean the machines that are running have to go slow.&nbsp;

“I have two days of harvest left,” he said, “but it will take five or six.”

Ochs noted that Kansas Wheat Alliance’s hard white wheat variety Joe has been a good performer this year, yielding in the mid-30s, and that PlainsGold’s HRW wheat variety Canvas has also done well, weathering the drought.

Harvest is further behind in the northwest part of the state at 60 to 70 percent complete, well behind the normal timeline for the area, according to Stan Remington, CEO/president of Frontier Ag Inc. With the weather forecast showing temperatures in the mid-90s and no chances of rain — yet — harvest could finish up by the end of next week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Along Highway 36, the wheat harvest has been the best in the territory, Remington said. The area had some moisture last fall that got the wheat up, snow throughout the winter and rains this spring. Moisture was timely, but not early enough for disease to set in, allowing wheat to grow into more of its yield potential. As a result, yields started out at 70 to 80 bushels per acre with protein ranging from 10 to 11 percent where yields are high and adjusting up to 12 percent further east where conditions were drier. Test weights started excellent at 61 to 62 pounds per bushel, with daily averages now at 58 bushels per acre. Weeds are starting to be more of an issue for producers.&nbsp;

Weather has been a constant battle since the day harvest started. In addition to rain delays, producers can only cut from mid-afternoon to dark, thanks to fog in the mornings and humidity that comes with the rising and setting of the sun. Two different sizeable hail events along the Cheyenne/Sherman County line eliminated some acres, along with significant damage to the corn and other fall crops. Still, Remington said producers will take the moisture because fall crops that weren’t hit by hail are looking fantastic.&nbsp;

Overall, Frontier Ag Inc. expects to end up with 60 percent of the historical average for bushels across their draw area, which extends from the Colorado line up to the Nebraska border, across Highway 36, dropping down to Highway 24 to Hill City then down to Ransom and back across the I-70 corridor from WaKeeney to Goodland.&nbsp;

“With the year, and as we look back at the first day of May, we feel pretty fortunate,” Remington said.

He noted grain shipments from northwest Kansas depend on how the final crop unfolds, but he is excited for when the Amber Wave wheat gluten plant comes online in Phillipsburg for additional marketing opportunities for area producers.&nbsp;

Day 14, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

Momentum continues to grow around Kansas Wesleyan’s corporate partnerships, as longtime friend Mahaska has agreed to expand its partnership with the university. The organization will become the title sponsor of KWU’s Scholarship Gala in both 2024 and 2026.

“Mahaska is honored to continue our longtime partnership with such a great organization that has done so much to change the lives of so many,” said Alan Michaud, chief of operations for Mahaska (Kansas). “With such a great staff and so many great supporters, we look forward to being a part of what KWU has in store for its future.”

“Saving the critical water sources that power the agriculture industry—the backbone of our state economy—and securing a reliable, safe water supply for residents and businesses across Kansas for years to come are nonpartisan issues,”&nbsp;said Kelly.&nbsp;“There is more to be done, but these bills represent an important step forward in that fight by providing needed funding and clear policies around water management works towards ensuring a safe, sustainable water supply for generations of Kansans to come.”

In 2022, Governor Kelly fully funded the state water plan for the first time since 2008. 

Senate Substitute for House Bill 2302 represents a significant increase in funding for water, adding $18 million on top of the annual $8 million for the state water plan and $17 million for the two grant funds. In total, the bill designates an additional $35 million in funding to protect essential water resources. 

The bill includes that it is legislative intent to continue this funding through 2027.

“We have been working with the Kansas Water Office and local vendors for the last four years to evaluate different irrigation technologies and evaluate their effectiveness in an on farm environment,”&nbsp;said Ryan Goering, of R&amp;E Goering Farms, LLC.&nbsp;“The results of this work indicate new technologies can reduce water consumption and reduce energy use while sustaining yields. The increased funding will allow these efforts to expand and accelerate the awareness and adoption of water conserving technologies by farmers.”

House Bill 2279 requires Kansas’ five Groundwater Management Districts to submit annual reports to the Kansas legislature with updated water conservation and stabilization plans to the Kansas Department of Agriculture.
