Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Salina man on drug allegations after a traffic stop lead to a police chase on Friday night.&nbsp;

Salina Police Captain James Feldman told Salina Post this morning, on Friday night at approximately 11:30 p.m. an officer was conducting routine patrols in the 200 block of W. Hamilton&nbsp; Avenue when he observed a vehicle with expired registration.&nbsp;

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, a 2017 Audi A-3, but was unsuccessful. A six-minute police chase followed. The chase ended after the fleeing vehicle struck a curb in the 700 Block of S. Front Street, subsequently deploying its airbags.

The driver, identified as Dalton Larry Jones, 20, Salina, exited the vehicle and began to flee on foot. Jones was quickly apprehended by law enforcement officers.

 During a search of Jones' car, officers discovered both cocaine and marijuana.&nbsp;

According to Feldman, Jones was arrested on the following requested charges:

●Felony interference with a law enforcement officer

●Possession of an opiate with intent to distribute

High-Speed Pursuit in Salina, Results in Arrest of Local Man

From Tuesday through Friday, July 25 through 28, Heartland Traffic Services of Kansas City, Kansas will refresh the pavement markings on various streets in Salina.

The streets receiving updates include: the 9th and Magnolia intersection; the 9th and Belmont intersection; the 9th and Debold intersection, 9th from Riffel to Schilling; the Magnolia and Belmont intersection; and Centennial from Schilling to Cloud.

The paint is usually applied by a moving vehicle with minimum traffic control and therefore few inconveniences to traffic. The paint dries in minutes. Motorists should maintain their distance from the vehicle at all times and avoid contact with freshly painted lines. Motorists are also encouraged to seek alternate routes when they see that work is occurring.

The $41,000 project is part of the City of Salina's $4.7 million 2023 maintenance capital improvement program.

City of Salina: Pavement Marking Project this Week

&nbsp;The Community Resilience Hub (CRH) at Kansas Wesleyan University is opening its courses on civil discourse to the public.

Alan Yarborough will be the trainer for both the full-day basic course on Aug. 8 and the half-day advanced course on Aug. 9. The half-day program is designed for those who attended the first training, either Aug. 8 or when it was offered last October.

“This is the second time we're offering the Civil Discourse training as part of our CRH advocacy focus,” said Sabrina Rosario, CRH campus coordinator. “We need to engage in healthy conversations and find common ground to move forward in community.”

CRH brings together agents and researchers to develop solutions for social issues and to build a more resilient community through education, action and advocacy.

Being able to have a conversation with folks you may not have much in common with is a skill that’s much needed in a world that’s so polarized, said Sheila Kjellberg, CRH market coordinator.

Yarborough will train participants to have healthy engagements across differences, improve the ability to dialogue, and build capacity for engagement and to work together to tackle critical issues.

He has six years of advocacy experience with the Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations in Washington, D.C. In that role, he oversees policy portfolios on Haiti, voting rights and racial justice issues, and leads weekly trainings and workshops on effective advocacy strategy. He was the primary content developer for “Make Me an Instrument of Peace,” an online civil discourse class, which has been used widely across the Episcopal Church.

Yarborough holds a B.S. in Economics from Clemson University in South Carolina and an M.S. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University.

The full-day course will run from 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $20. The advanced course will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. and will cost $10. Registration for both courses costs $25. Lunch is included with the registration.

KWU: Community Resilience Hub Opens Civil Discourse Classes to Public

Greg Doering Kansas Farm Bureau Tent camping in July in Kansas usually isn’t on my list of ways to spend a weekend. Yet I recently found myself slowly sinking into an air mattress with a clear view of the stars through a thin mesh canopy, which served as my only protection from the elements. Somehow this ill-advised excursion actually worked out with an overnight low in the mid-60s. Officially the event was a family reunion of sorts with a couple cousins and a brother at the family ranch. Kids ranging from high school to elementary school were included, of course. Camping simply offered proximity but the real reason we gathered at the ranch was for the amenities like fishing, four-wheeling, swimming, splashing through creeks, catching crawdads and plinking targets.

If you’re seeing a bunch of middle-aged men attempting to relive their childhoods while introducing their city-slicker kids to a distorted view of what country living is like, you’ve pretty much got the picture. Everyone ended with the same number of fingers and toes they started with. The kids had a fantastic time, as did the old folks who always seemed a step or two behind for some reason.

Outside of sleeping in a tent, we weren’t exactly roughing it. My brother obtained a large, enclosed trailer to make transporting all the four-wheelers, kayaks and other fun things easier. It also meant we had plenty of room for provisions, no matter how practical they were. Our campsite was on a small patch of lawn, and we arranged our tents in an arc around a small circle of rocks that marked the makeshift cook station and firepit. About 20 yards away was a large barn with electricity and a refrigerator. We still spent a small fortune on ice, which we lugged around in an assortment of coolers. Amongst all the activity there was a noticeable absence of cell phones among both parents and kids. Other than grabbing the occasional picture or checking the time, everyone found plenty of other distractions to hold their attention. When the sun went down, everyone pulled their chairs closer to the fire and the focus of conversation ranged from the old folks rehashing the past to the kids wanting to know more about their grandparents, great grandparents and the ranch in general as coyotes howled in the distance. Everyone stayed up just late enough for the moon to set and clouds to break so we could see a star-filled sky with traces of the Milky Way visible in the background. For a little over 24 hours nothing existed outside of our little group. There were no important calls or emails to respond to. No ball games to attend or other responsibilities to worry about. All of us were, briefly, just kids in the country, until we had to load the trailer and head back to reality. But that has its advantages as well. Like a regular mattress, air conditioning and indoor plumbing. INSIGHT: Kids in the Country

Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo<a> </a><a> </a>Abilene, Kan. (July 24, 2023) – At age 74, Judy still mows her own lawn, trims trees, cleans the gutters of her house, changes the oil in the mower, even stains the cedar framed house she lives in, outside of Abilene.

And if she has her way, she’ll continue to do those things, despite having had cancer.

The Abilene woman was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in January, and has benefitted from financial gifts from the Elsie Brooks Memorial Cancer Fund of Dickinson County.

By&nbsp;January 23, she was taking radiation treatments, two times a day, in Salina at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center. The treatments had to be six hours apart, so she would take the first one in the morning, then go to her daughter’s house in Salina until mid-afternoon, when she could start the next treatment.

Then she did twelve chemotherapy treatments, three days’ worth of treatment then 21 days off. Goodwin could drive herself to the appointments but her daughter drove her home, because of Goodwin’s blurred vision due to the medicine.

The help from the Elsie Brooks fund was a godsend to Goodwin, who lives on her Social Security payment and a small pension. Her husband, Winslow, died from cancer seven years ago.

The Elsie Brooks Memorial Fund of Dickinson County was founded in 1993 with a gift from Brooks’ estate. The fund provides monies for those in the county undergoing cancer treatment.

While undergoing treatment, Goodwin, a genealogist buff, discovered that she is related to Elsie Brooks; Elsie’s grandmother, Margaret Sherbahn Stark, was a sister to Goodwin’s great-grandmother, Charlotte Sherbahn Dessenberger.

“I’ve gotten (financial) help from someone I never knew, except through my research,” she said.&nbsp;

Goodwin has decorated the graves in the Abilene cemetery, including Brooks’. Some years, she decorates up to forty graves for Memorial Day. She has photographed many of the headstones.

At a doctor’s appointment in early June, doctors found no sign of cancer.

She’s glad for that, and she’s glad for the help from the Fund.

“I was thankful they were so willing to help,” she said. “When it comes down to it, I’m living on a set budget. I was very appreciative of it.”

The Abilene rodeo hosts its annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink night at the rodeo&nbsp;on Thursday, August 3,&nbsp;partnering with the Elsie Brooks Fund to raise money through voluntary donations. The rodeo has worked with the Elsie Brooks fund since 2008 and has raised over $42,000 for the fund.

The Elsie Brooks Fund has assisted its clients over 1,600 times since it began in 1993.

Fans are asked to wear pink to the rodeo&nbsp;on August 3.

🎙 Center for Theatre Arts presents 'Head Over Heels' the Musical

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services&nbsp; Secretary Laura Howard announced the agency has reopened its shared living program, a home and community based services living option for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.&nbsp;

“The process to re-introduce this program to Kansans with such disabilities has been an important one and we are grateful to and want to acknowledge those who continuously advocated for this program across the state and for those who participated in the creation of the manual,”&nbsp; Howard said. “Our team and our partner group has implemented best practices in our state, answered questions, developed tools, and have been vital in this program’s development.”

Shared living is a nationally recognized model for habilitation or residential services for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

 In shared living, one to two participants share a home with a family or single adult's family (the contractor). The contractor lives with the participant and provides supports to them in accordance with the participant’s person-centered support plan to include social activities, companionship, teaching, daily living skills, supported employment, night supports and other needs.

“Shared living provides adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities the opportunity to live in a supportive, family-like environment that promotes independence, social inclusion,&nbsp;and a sense of belonging,”&nbsp;Sunflower Health Plan’s President and CEO, Michael Stephens said. “Sunflower is proud to partner with the state and providers to reopen this program.”&nbsp;

Participants in the shared living program have the same rights, responsibilities, and assurances as other participants receiving home and community based services-intellectual and/or developmental disabilities services in other settings. All services and supports will comply with state licensing, community developmental disabilities organization quality assurance, managed care organization reviews, the person-centered support plan, and other quality assurance reviews.

KDADS has developed the standards for the shared living program in collaboration with a group of licensed residential providers currently providing shared living services for participants. HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;After the recent Supreme Court decision in National Pork Producers Council v. Ross, Congress needs to act to make sure ag products can continue to move between states and the&nbsp;Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression Act is designed to do that. It was introduced in the Senate last month by Kansas U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall.

"The state of California wants to tell Kansas farmers how to grow pigs," Marshall said. "We're not going to let them do that. We feel it's a violation of state rights, it has interstate commerce issues. Today, California wants to tell us how to grow hogs. Next, it will be chickens and cattle. Eventually, they are going to tell us how to build airplanes and how to build cars, as well. We think that will be very stifling to the economy."

Conservation and efficiency of operations are vital to the interests of farmers throughout the country.

"Our farmers and ranchers have so much respect for our livestock," Marshall said. "That's really what this issue is about. They are concerned about how we raise sows in modern day agriculture. What happens are, the sows will actually roll over on their little piglets. What we do is, when they have baby piglets, we put them in a little bit smaller container chamber, so they don't roll over and kill the pigs. We actually think it's the more humane thing to do, but here we have California trying to tell us how to grow pigs in Kansas."

The bill would let any producer injured by a regulation on their product to potentially bring an action in the appropriate court to invalidate that regulation and seek damages for economic loss resulting from that regulation.

Marshall working on bill to keep ag products flowing between states

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Jobseekers are encouraged to attend the upcoming State of Kansas Agencies Virtual Job Fair from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26. This virtual fair, hosted by&nbsp;KANSASWORKS, will focus on employment opportunities available within many of the state’s 98 government agencies. 

Currently, there are almost 800 vacancies across the state.

“The Department of Commerce alone has 28 openings, and we want to fill these positions with skilled and professional candidates looking to secure good-paying careers with great benefits,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said.&nbsp;“All of our agency jobs offer opportunities for individuals to make a true difference in the lives of individuals and communities by serving our great state.”

Registration is required to participate in the event, regardless of previous participation. The Virtual Job Fair portal features a jobseeker training video, a list of participating employers, and channels for attendees to register and log in. Jobseekers are encouraged to dress professionally, as employers might request to engage in a video interview.

Candidates can participate through any digital device, but it is highly recommended to use a computer to be most effective during the job fairs. NWS-Wichita: Triple Digit Heat Expected This Week

Do we need to re-learn how we merge on the freeway?&nbsp; The Kansas Department of Transportation says yes.&nbsp; But are we open to re-thinking something we have done the same way for years?

Since 2016, KDOT has been promoting the “<a href="https://www.ksdot.gov/bureaus/kcmetro/zipper-merge.asp" target="_blank">zipper merge</a>” for the construction zones along US 69 in Johnson County.&nbsp; Now, they also want us to use it along sections of K-10 that are under construction between Olathe and Lawrence, near Eudora.&nbsp; They may expand it further.

Around here, most use the early merge.&nbsp; When we see that a lane is closed, we move over into the open lane as quickly as possible.&nbsp; We treat drivers that do not do this as “cheaters.”&nbsp; Any attempt to cut in line may be met with a refusal to open a space, dirty looks, or even a famous, obscene hand gesture. &nbsp; Once, in construction around Olathe, I saw a semi truck driver steer his truck so it was straddling both lanes, just to block these line cutters. Didn’t the teachers in elementary school teach us not to cut in line?&nbsp;

They did, but they also taught us to take turns. The early merge is fine if there is not much traffic, but when things get busy, drivers may slow down looking for a chance to merge early, slowing traffic further or even causing accidents.&nbsp; The zipper merge calls for drivers to stay in their lane until the merge point, and then take turns, one car from each lane at a time, so that the traffic closes up like the teeth of a zipper.&nbsp; No more viewing drivers who stay in the to-be-closed lane as “cheaters,” no more blocking, no more gesturing.&nbsp; Signs warn drivers “Stay in your lane,” and “Take turns merging.”

Traffic is an excellent example of how what we think is intuitively right, is often wrong.&nbsp; It reminds me of a debate I had with a family member when they were younger.&nbsp; Frustrated that we were running late, they suggested that the city needed to re-time the traffic light where we were waiting.&nbsp; I replied that a citywide traffic study might be in order.&nbsp; Baffled, they replied that no such thing was necessary–this particular traffic light need only be reprogrammed.&nbsp; I disagreed.&nbsp; After all,&nbsp; re-timing just&nbsp; one traffic light could cause traffic to back up on the feeder streets, which in turn could cause traffic to back up on the feeder streets to those streets, and so on–a ripple effect that could be felt for many miles.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This complexity is why study of traffic is an academic subject in its own right– just ask the experts at K-State’s&nbsp;<a href="https://transport.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">University Transportation Center.</a>&nbsp; Traffic flows are complicated, and easing congestion often calls on drivers to re-learn what we think we know, among other changes.

This is policymaking in the real world– complicated, sometimes counterintuitive challenges to our established ways of thinking and doing,&nbsp; which rely on the assumption that people are ready to make the change.&nbsp; Sometimes, half of us embrace the change and half of us do not, creating further confusion if not outright chaos, and making us angry with one another.&nbsp; This helps explain how issues that should not be part of the culture war get sucked into it–issues like gas stoves or Covid-19 protocols.

There are bigger problems in the world today than how we merge at construction sites, but few have such a direct, immediate impact on our everyday lives–or exemplify just how difficult policy change is.

While most people think of flies as a single entity, there are actually four species that impact livestock herds: houseflies, horn flies, stable flies&nbsp;and face flies.

“Lucky for us, each fly has a preference for where it likes to be on the animal, or not on the animal,” Olds said, noting that horn flies prefer the animal’s back or belly; stable flies are common on the front legs; houseflies hang out around the feed bunk; and face flies are found on the animal’s face.

“Each fly can lay 100 eggs every couple days, so over her lifetime, she may lay 500 eggs,” Olds said. “So getting rid of adults is important, but getting rid of the places where they breed is more important. By knowing which fly pest you have, you can look for areas where these flies may be breeding.”

Elm Street.Persons donating are asked to drive up to the front of the library, where volunteers will unload the donated materials. Accepted donations include the following.●Gently used fiction and nonfiction books for adults and children●Textbooks and travel books less than three years old&nbsp;●Audio Books●Music and movie CDs/DVDs●Video gamesNo encyclopedias, magazines, VHS tapes, or homemade recordings can be accepted.Donations will be included in upcoming Friends of the Salina Public Library Used Book Sales. All proceeds from the sales go directly yo support programs and activities of the Salina Public Library.
