KBI investigating death of 14-year-old girl at outdoor party

CLOUD COUNTY —The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and law enforcement authorities in north central Kansas are conducting a death investigation after a shooting occurred at a party September 16, in rural Cloud County, according to a media release.

Just before 11:30p.m., a Clay Center resident called the Cloud County Sheriff's office to request help locating a 14-year-old family member. The girl reportedly ran away and was thought to be attending a party near the small community of Aurora, Kansas.

A Cloud County deputy responded to the outdoor field party near 210th Road and Lark Road.  High school and college students were in attendance.

 The deputy located the girl and tried to convince her to return to her family.  As he was escorting her to his patrol vehicle, she pulled out a firearm and shot herself. The deputy did not draw his firearm.

The deputy and an off-duty firefighter attempted life-saving measures. Shortly after midnight, the was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Multiple individuals attending the party witnessed the incident. Law enforcement is interviewing  them as part of the investigation.
