I have a very tattered and worn Christmas stocking that is nearly 50 years old. To look at it, it's nothing fancy: it is red and made of thin felt. You can't even hang it up anymore because the loop used to hang it broke many years ago. But this stocking is mine and it is very special to me. What makes it special is the joy I see on my mom’s face when she presents it to me each year, and the childlike wonder it brings as we share time together.

 These emotions have nothing to do with the content of the stocking. Just as my stocking holds memories and love, family traditions can create similar lasting connections. Simple traditions and objects like my Christmas stocking can hold profound meaning, rooted in emotional connection, nostalgia, and shared family rituals. These moments and items are powerful tools in strengthening family bonds, building identity and fostering joy that transcends material aspects. 1. Create Traditions with Special Objects

My Christmas stocking is a perfect example of how a simple object can become a cherished part of a family’s story. If you’d like to create a tradition around a special object, start by designating what that special object could be – a handmade ornament, a plush elf that only visits the house during December, etc.

Traditions don’t have to be old to be meaningful. They can evolve over time, just like my stocking has evolved into a cherished ritual in our family. Starting new traditions ensures they remain relevant and meaningful for the family as they grow and change. This year, reflect on your family’s unique interests and values to create a new tradition. For example, maybe you could all write notes of gratitude to place in stockings or a family journal. 

You could also consider twisting old traditions. For example, you could turn gift-giving into a scavenger hunt or incorporate a charitable activity into your traditions, such as donating toys to a local non-profit.

Salina Presbyterian Manor recently launched its annual&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.presbyterianmanors.org/angel-tree/">Angel Tree Campaign</a>, a fundraising holiday tradition to raise money for the Good Samaritan Program.

The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.presbyterianmanors.org/why-give/">Good Samaritan Program</a>&nbsp;provides funding for residents in our community who have outlived their resources through no fault of their own. The money pays for monthly fees, and to cover essentials such as utilities, clothing, and personal hygiene items. Thanks to this program, our parent company&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.presbyterianmanors.org/">PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®)</a>&nbsp;is proud to say that&nbsp;no resident has ever been asked to leave one of our communities because they couldn’t pay.

“I really didn’t think I’d live to be this old. I did the best that I could with my financial planning,” says Pat Tomlins, 93. While PMMA maintains the anonymity of Good Samaritan recipients, Pat has allowed us to share her story so that others understand the program’s impact. “To lay my head down at night, and I don’t worry – my sons are so thankful. I have a feeling of security at this time in my life when I need it.”

Salina Presbyterian Manor has set a goal for this year’s Angel Tree campaign, and we hope residents, families, friends and neighbors will become our angels and help us meet that goal.

“Each donation to our Angel Tree campaign will stay here at our community, to benefit our residents locally,” said Melissa Brumbaugh, executive director. “Your generosity will make a meaningful difference, providing support to seniors who need it most.”

Currently, more than 390 residents across PMMA’s 16 communities depend on the Good Samaritan program. On average, every $50 donation helps one resident.

“Every night in my prayers, I give thanks for Presbyterian Manors and the Good Samaritan Program,” says Pat. “I’m old, goodness gracious, to make it this far with that kind of security – wow.”

Red Fern: 'Shelf Awareness' unveils 2024 Best Books Lists

KWU Tickets are now on sale for one of Kansas Wesleyan’s premier yearly events, Night with the Yotes. The 2025 version of the event will be held&nbsp;Friday, Feb. 21, in Mabee Arena on campus.&nbsp;

“We can’t wait for Night with the Yotes,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “Every year, it seems to get better and better. It’s not only a fun evening, it’s one of the best ways to support the activities that are such a critical part of our students’ college experiences. We hope every Coyote supporter will turn out to enjoy this event.”

Tickets for the annual fundraiser, which benefits all of KWU’s numerous activities, including music, athletics, theatre and DECA, cost $125 apiece. Sponsorships also are available, ranging from $1,500 to $2,500, and named tables are available for $1,000.&nbsp;

Last year’s Night with the Yotes saw a record $165,000 raised through sponsorships and auction sales. A record 60 tables were filled at the 2024 event.&nbsp;

Salina’s holiday season is getting a creative twist this year as the Center for Theatre Arts at Theatre Salina presents its first annual '12 Days of Christmas', featuring performances by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61568713568362">Iron Street Dance Company</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CenterForTheatreArts">Stage Door One Singers</a>. The event will be held on December 18 and 19 at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

The performances will spotlight some of Salina’s most talented young artists. Under the expert direction of Maggie Spicer Brown and Elizabeth-Ali Schade, the ensemble features performers who have collectively participated in more than 150 productions at Theatre Salina and area high schools.

Featuring beautiful dance pieces to songs like "Underneath the Tree" and "Carol of the Bells" as well as fun scenes that lead into musical performances of favorites like "Feliz Navidad" and "Swing into Christmas" and more.&nbsp;

Salina Salvation Army seeking bell ringers for Christmas season

Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article296570569.html">recently affirmed</a>&nbsp;that, with the Republican legislative majority&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/election/article294547689.html">even stronger</a>&nbsp;after the 2024 elections, the leadership will bring back the push to ban transgender surgery on those under 18 years old. The last effort to do so ended with a veto from Governor Laura Kelly and a veto-override attempt which failed by only two votes. So it’s reasonable, now that they have additional votes on their side, that the Republicans would try again.

Reasonable, that is, in terms of signaling. Is it reasonable in terms of substance?

The role of political signaling, as opposed to the usually unglamorous work of addressing policy substance, is a complicated one in democratic governance. It is not uncommon for voters to complain that those elected to represent them are spending their time on meaningless bills or resolutions that show their support for one cause or another, instead of getting down to the business of building actually substantive legislation. It’s a fair—and not inaccurate—complaint.

Yet I sympathize with legislators who operate in a nationalized media environment, whose funding so often depends upon major interest groups and organizations that usually care little for specific budget or policy matters, and instead are focused on creating media messages which exist primarily to rile up or placate key constituencies. A reasonable politician might well conclude that have to play the signaling game, if only to make sure they have the opportunity to also focus on the difficult matters that may concern them most.

That’s not to say that there aren’t members of the Republican super-majority in Topeka who, for a variety of reasons, may well be sincerely concerned—maybe even horrified—by the prospect of someone under the age of 18 receiving gender modification surgery, and see banning such as a necessary action in the name of public health or morality. I’m sure some fit that description.

But I suspect most of our legislators actually understand that they are crusading symbolically against an almost non-existent concern. It’s the same for illegal immigrants, who are&nbsp;<a href="https://nij.ojp.gov/topics/articles/undocumented-immigrant-offending-rate-lower-us-born-citizen-rate">far more law-abiding</a>&nbsp;than the rest of the population, yet every story about an undocumented resident who commits a crime will be shared over and over and over again.

On a certain level, one must simply accept this as a political reality: most people, lacking both the time and inclination to become experts regarding any given matter, depend upon—and make decisions upon—the conveying of key signals, whether involving law or morality or anything else. Kansas Wesleyan University will celebrate its fall graduates with a commencement ceremony on Friday, December 13, at 5:30 p.m. in Sams Chapel.&nbsp;

A professional photographer will capture each graduate walking across the stage. Photos will be posted on the KWU Facebook page in the days following the ceremony and on a reputable photo-sharing site. Kansas State University Johnson Cancer Research Center

Thanks to awards from the&nbsp;<a href="https://cancer.k-state.edu/">Johnson Cancer Research Center</a>, 21 Kansas State University students will conduct hands-on cancer research in the spring 2025 semester.

The center's Cancer Research Awards will provide the selected students with hands-on laboratory research experience that emphasizes the importance of ethical research practices and effectively communicating science to the public.

"The Cancer Research Awards allow students to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, preparing them for success in their future careers," said Sherry Fleming, director of the Johnson Cancer Research Center. "These awardees represent some of the brightest minds at K-State and in Kansas, and we are confident they will excel in their chosen fields."

Each awardee receives $2,000 to support their research endeavors, enabling them to focus on laboratory work instead of non-academic employment. Additionally, $1,000 is allocated to each student for research supplies, enhancing their capacity to conduct impactful studies.

"The Cancer Research Award will help me explore my growing interest in research and veterinary medicine," said Ashley Najar, sophomore in animal sciences and industry,&nbsp;Shawnee. "I'm grateful to be working with Dr. Chieko Azuma and researching canine nasal tumors and the potential ways to reduce them. Through this research, I'll reach a better understanding of the disease and how it affects both canines and humans."

The Salina Area United Way is thrilled to announce the resounding success of its fourth annual Christmas event, Mistletoe Melodies Featuring HiFi Dueling Pianos, held on Friday, December 6, at Tumblweed LLC. 

With more than 400 attendees, the enchanting evening brought together music, laughter, and holiday cheer in support of the Salina Area United Way's 2024-2025 Campaign. The event raised an incredible $70,000 to benefit the Salina community.

Guests enjoyed a festive atmosphere filled with the sounds of HiFi Dueling Pianos and a special dinner performance by the local band, Everyday Lights. A delicious dinner and dessert catered by YaYa’s added to the night’s charm, along with engaging activities including photo opportunities with Salina Selfie Station, silent and live auctions, a 50-50 raffle, wine and whiskey pulls, and more.

 This year’s event raised significant funds that will directly support the Salina Area United Way’s programs, their 13 Funded Partners and seven Childcare Partners, strengthening programs that make a lasting impact in our community.

SAUW Mistletoe Melodies raises $70K to benefit Salina area community

Kansas State University will see more than 1,200 candidates for graduation this fall at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/">commencement&nbsp;ceremonies</a>&nbsp;set for Friday, Dec. 13, in Manhattan and Salina and Saturday, Dec. 14, in Manhattan.

Candidates from both the summer 2024 and fall 2024 semesters will be recognized. Ceremony information, including parking, accommodations will be available on the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/">K-State graduation website.</a>

<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/"></a>Approximately 880 bachelor's degrees, 250 master's degrees and 80 doctorates will be awarded this fall. More than 50 students will be earning multiple degrees. The graduates-to-be also include nearly 280 students who are earning their degrees through a K-State Online program.

The following is the schedule and speakers for ceremonies on Dec. 13:

• Graduate School, 1 p.m., Bramlage Coliseum. Regent Neelima Parasker will represent the Kansas Board of Regents at the ceremony. Garry Myers, director of the Australian Institute for Microbiology &amp; Infection at the University of Technology Sydney, will be the speaker.

• Air Force ROTC Detachment 270 commissioning ceremony, 2 p.m., Forum Hall in the K-State Student Union. The commissioning officer and speaker will be Lt. Col. Brian Witthoeft, commander of Detachment 270.

• K-State Salina, 7 p.m., Student Life Center, Salina. Retired Col. William Clark, president and CEO of Saint Francis Ministries, will be the speaker. Clark served in the United States Army for 30 years and has led Saint Francis Ministries since November 2020.

The following is the schedule and speakers for ceremonies on Dec. 14:

• College of Arts and Sciences, 8:30 a.m., Bramlage Coliseum. The speaker will be Sheila Ellis-Glasper, principal and co-founder of SEG Media Collective. In addition to leading the award-winning agency, Ellis-Glasper has earned accolades, including the 2021 Minority Business Advocate of the Year and the 2024 Stacey Hall Humanitarian Award.

• Army ROTC Wildcat Battalion ceremony, 9 a.m., Forum Hall in the K-State Student Union. The guest speaker and commissioning officer will be Col. Travis Habhab, First Infantry Division Chief of Staff.

• College of Education, 10 a.m., Bramlage Coliseum. Connie Redic, principal of Curtis Middle School, USD 259 Wichita Public Schools, will be the speaker. Redic was named the Kansas Assistant Principal of the Year in 2021, and she earned a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from K-State.

• College of Business Administration, 11:30 a.m., Bramlage Coliseum. Julie Bryant, retired manager of accounting operations for Phillips 66, will be the speaker. Bryant is a member of K-State College of Business Administration advisory councils for business and accounting.

• College of Agriculture, 1 p.m., Bramlage Coliseum. Cassie Jones, professor and teaching coordinator in K-State's animal sciences and industry department, will be the speaker. In addition to managing the largest undergraduate major on campus, she is also an accomplished researcher with more than 100 peer-reviewed articles.

• College of Health and Human Sciences, 2:30 p.m., Bramlage Coliseum. Paul Ewing, CEO of Prosperity Advisors, will be the speaker. Ewing has worked in the financial services industry for more than 40 years, and in addition to leading Prosperity Advisors, he also founded and serves as CEO of the Prosperity Network of Advisors.

• Carl R. Ice College of Engineering, 4 p.m., Bramlage Coliseum. Karen Clegg, retired vice president and general manager of Honeywell International Defense and Space, will be the speaker. The Saline County Board of Commissioners has officially adopted its 2025 meeting schedule through <a href="https://pub-salinecounty.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=8661">Resolution 24-2414</a>. This resolution outlines regular meetings, work planning sessions, and study sessions aimed at ensuring transparent and consistent governance.

The Board will convene for regular meetings at 9 a.m. on select Tuesdays throughout the year, with key dates including January 7, February 4, March 4, and December 30. Work planning sessions will also be held at 8:30 a.m. before certain meetings, including February 4, April 1, and October 7. The Commission will also conduct study sessions on specific dates, such as January 28, March 18, and December 23.

Notably, the Board has scheduled breaks from meetings on several Tuesdays, including April 15, June 24, and November 11, due to holidays and key conferences. These dates are subject to change only if emergency sessions are required.

Saline County Board of Commissioners set 2025 meeting schedule

The holiday season is full of cheer, but it can also bring hidden dangers for our beloved pets. From festive foods to holiday decorations, there's plenty to watch out for.

Susan Nelson, clinical professor at Kansas State University's Veterinary Health Center in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has some tips to keep pets safe.

"Many animal-related emergency room visits during the holidays are due to pets eating something inappropriate, whether intentionally given or by accident," Nelson said. "Some foods cause upset stomachs, some are poisonous and some can cause life-threatening obstructions."

Fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis. Ham, gravy, butter-laden potatoes and buttered veggies should be kept out of reach from pets. Skin and dark meat from turkey and fat trimmings from meat can be harmful to animals.

"Meat bones can cause life-threatening perforation of the GI tract," Nelson said. "Especially poultry bones, which tend to splinter when chewed. Several small pieces can also lead to GI obstruction. Tooth breakage from chewing on them is possible as well."

Pet owners should exercise caution when it comes to certain foods and beverages that can be harmful to animals. Items to avoid include chocolate, coffee and caffeinated drinks, as well as raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, raw yeast dough, salty snacks and foods seasoned with garlic or onion powder. Additionally, citrus plant stems, leaves, peels, fruits and seeds, along with dairy products, desserts or candies sweetened with xylitol, and alcoholic beverages, can pose serious health risks.

"Securing all food items behind a pet-proof door and making sure trash cans are secured can help keep pets safe," Nelson said. "Strings, foil wrappers, stainless steel scrub pads, skewers and other items smell like the food they were used on and are tempting for pets to ingest. These can lead to GI obstruction and/or perforations."

Food is not the only thing that could be harmful to pets this holiday season.

"Ingestion of holiday plants can cause anywhere from minor GI irritation to life-threatening toxicity," Nelson said. "Plants to keep out of reach include mistletoe, holly, amaryllis, balsam, pine and cedar. Certain water additives for Christmas trees can also be toxic to our pets. The ASPCA contains lists of more plants that are toxic, or not, to dogs and cats."

While certain holiday plants can cause varying levels of toxicity, the decorations and wrapping materials that fill our homes can also pose significant dangers if pets try to eat them.

"Homes are often decked for the holidays, with many decorations and wrapping items having the potential to cause harm if ingested," Nelson said. "These include items such as ribbons, tinsel, hooks, electrical cords, candles, oil lamps, potpourri, ornaments and wreaths."

Holiday festivities might be fun for us but can be stressful for pets.

"Pets that are anxious around strangers or crowds should be kept in a comfortable, quiet place away from the commotion with a favorite treat or toy," Nelson said. "Even if your pet likes company, they should still have access to a room or crate located in a quiet place where your guests won't bother them. For pets that become particularly stressed by company, speak to your veterinarian about prescribing them anxiolytics to decrease their anxiety until your company has left."

It is important to make sure pets have identification, like a collar with tags or a microchip, in case they should slip through the door and run away as guests enter and leave. Make sure microchips have the most up-to-date contact information.

If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, immediately call your veterinarian, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435, or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 for advice.

K-State vet offers holiday pet safety tips

Cloud, Salina, KS. The suspect told the female clerk he needed the money from the register, and she told him no. The suspect grabbed the register, and the clerk attempted to stop the suspect from taking it but was unsuccessful. The suspect fled from the store, with the register, and ran to the north. The subject wore a mask and gloves.
