LINDSBORG - The premiere Kansas celebration of all things Swedish is coming up this month as Lindsborg welcomes the world to the Svensk Hyllningsfest.

The biennial celebration is scheduled for Oct. 13-14 and is packed full of food, fun, arts and crafts, and entertainment.

In a welcome on the Svensk Hyllningsfest website, festival co-chairs&nbsp;Jenell Hulse and Tessa Peters wrote, "Svensk Hyllningsfest (Swedish Honoring Festival) is celebrating our 82nd year of existence and continues to thrive as residents don Swedish costumes, perform Swedish folk dances, and honor those ancestors who settled in this area long ago. This unique festival is not only fun for visitors to get a taste of Sweden in the middle of Kansas, but allows for the community of Lindsborg to flourish and show off the charm and character that attracts so many."

Ever had the Swedish Folk Dancers’ famous Viking on a Stick? Well here's your chance! In addition to the wealth of food providers Lindsborg has to offer, 14 food trucks will be available in the Hungry Vikings Food Court from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.

Live entertainment will abound as well at multiple locations. And don't forget the Grand Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The festival includes a variety of activities for everyone:

The parade at 10:00am on Saturday morning, features area marching bands, floats, antique cars, and other entries, a favorite event for many festival-goers. Festival buttons are available for sale the day of the event, for $10 at the Hemslojd (201 N. Main Street), White's Foodliner (215 N. Harrison) and First Bank Kansas (118 N. Main Street). If you're able to get to&nbsp;Lindsborg&nbsp;before the festival, the buttons are $5, at those same locations. Buttons support the festival, but are not necessary to attend all festival events.

Reportedly, F. Scott Fitzgerald once told fellow writer Ernest Hemingway that “the rich are different from you and me,” which may suggest that the super-wealthy are mysterious, inscrutable, and indifferent to the plight of ordinary human beings.

Writer-director Sébastien Marnier has wicked fun with this notion, playing with audience paranoia about the upper classes while subverting expectations about his characters’ true motives. Our working-class surrogate into this privileged world is Stéphane (Laure Calamy), a young woman desperately needing a place to live. She reaches out to the father she doesn’t even know—rich but enfeebled tycoon Serge Dumontet (Jacques Weber), who invites her to a palatial villa that’s a tacky tribute to consumer consumption. 

Serge seems to believe Stéphane simply wants to re-connect with him after the death of her mother, but Serge’s wife Louise (Dominique Blanc), other daughter George (Doria Tillier), and seemingly loyal servant Agnès (Véronique Ruggia Saura) are less enthused, smelling an interloper trying to usurp the family fortune. And they may be right, but Marnier’s puzzle-box screenplay and Calamy’s likeable, charismatic performance keep us uncertain. 

Is Stéphane actually being played by her hosts, or does she have secret vengeance on her mind? Perhaps the key lies in the absence of Serge’s beloved son—or Stéphane’s relationship with a female convict currently in prison. The film keeps us guessing, while reveling in guerrilla warfare between the haves and have-nots. 

Filled with Hitchcockian suspense, arch performances, and deadpan humor (starting with the film’s knowingly portentous title), The Origin of Evil&nbsp;likely shares Hemingway’s sarcastic, unimpressed response to Fitzgerald’s claim that the rich are different: “Yes. They have more money.”

Salina Arts Center Cinema presents, 'The Origin of Evil'

At The Salina Art Center Friday evening, artists from around the world gripped the mic with paint-stained hands as they answered audience questions about their various works of art.

For most of the week, this group of artists painted new murals around town as part of BOOM 2023. During the panel discussion, the muralists said that each mural includes a touch of their own personalities.

One Baltimore, MD-based artist, Chris Stain, puts a piece of his childhood in each composition he paints.

"My parents worked in factories, so the whole neighborhood that I grew up in was it just that," Stain said. "It comes out in my work when I see images of working-class people. That's what I want to be. I want to work hard like that. I want to put that kind of effort into the work I do for the unions that are working and, more so, for my work and my personal work."

At the artists' panel discussion on Friday, the artists described&nbsp;the various modes that brought them to street art, varying from boredom to a need for artistic expression.

Add Fuel, or Portuguese artist Diogo Machado, began graffitiing after seeing photocopies of graffiti work from Germany and the United States, but eventually left street art behind for a career in graphic design.

"I have always been drawing, and I love drawing, and at one point, I got an invitation from my city," Machado said. "I had this big project that I was involved in, and it had a mural, and I thought this could translate into the work I was doing at the time as a designer and illustrator."

Machado said he grew up surrounded by Portuguese tiles and likes to use them in his work, utilizing stencils to spray paint patterns across large outdoor walls.

He then adds a new aspect, making the tiles look painted on paper and ripped to show the building underneath.

Pat Perry, an artist from Michigan, painted a mural with multiple paintings on Third and Ash Streets, wanting to leave a moment in time immortalized on the one-story wall.&nbsp;

"What do we want to leave to show people as a little reminder of what was going on at this moment?" Perry said. "I try to pick things that are from the Midwest. I also live in the Midwest, and I think there are many different motifs, imagery, and things that are missing. From the bigger lexicon of American Art. And so, I tried to pick those things and be thoughtful about the pictures."

That's what I want to be. I want to work hard like that. A look past the artwork — BOOM! 2023 Artist Panel Discussion 

&nbsp;Embark on an emotionally rich musical journey with the Salina Symphony on Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. at the Stiefel Theatre.

The Symphony will open the Passage-themed concert with Barber’s thoughtful Adagio for Strings. The orchestra will then be joined by flutist Daniel Velasco for a performance of Michael Daugherty’s virtuosic and heart-wrenching Trail of Tears, a strikingly beautiful work that demonstrates how the human spirit deals with upheaval and adversity.

Following intermission, the orchestra will present Penderecki’s intensely romantic and lush Second Symphony, “Christmas.” The concert will end with Bach’s beloved Sheep May Safely Graze.

Daniel Velasco is an award-winning flutist whose “standout” and “vibrant” performances (Miami Herald) have taken him around the world. He has been a soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador, among many others. He has also been featured as a guest performer across the United States. Orchestral festivals include the Latin American Orchestra and Chautauqua Music Festival, as well as tours through Chile and Central America with the Orchestra of the Americas. Velasco is currently the flute professor at the University of Kansas.

Michael Daugherty is one of the most frequently commissioned, programmed, and recorded composers on the American concert music scene today, hailed by The Times (UK) as “a master icon maker” with a “maverick imagination, fearless structural sense and meticulous ear.”

Daugherty first came to international attention when the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performed his Metropolis Symphony at Carnegie Hall in 1994. Since that time, his music has entered the orchestral, band and chamber music repertoire and made him, according to the League of American Orchestras, one of the ten most performed living American composers.

Salina Symphony to Present “Passage” in Nov.

The month of October is known for three main holidays or celebrations – Halloween, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Pride.  While these days are amazing to engage in, did you know there are many, many ways to celebrate in October? 

 First and foremost, it is Autumn, which happens to be my most favorite season.  Fall has a whole vibe all its own.  It brings on cozy and layered apparel, cold weather comfort food recipes, and then there is the foliage. 

 October is packed with food-centric holidays, such as National Dessert Day.  As a self-declared foodie, I appreciate this.  There are also creative celebrations, such as National Fine Art Appreciation Day.  October is chock full of fantastic ways to celebrate and I have created a condensed version of several (mostly foodie) reasons to celebrate something for each day in October.  While these may not be for everyone, there is bound to be something for everyone.

I personally could almost be a vegetarian, but I like some things like chicken and turkey way too much to completely sever ties with them.  If this is something up your alley, finding a plant-based version of many popular dishes is simple.  In the spirit of World Vegetarian Day, try some vegetarian recipes in the book Vegetarian Recipes For Everyone by Deborah Madison.

October 2: International Day of Non-Violence

The day represents a time to spread the message of peace and tolerance and is celebrated on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.  Gandhi’s work advocated for nonviolent protest to stand up for freedom and civil rights. October 3: ‘Mean Girls’ Appreciation Day

Who does not love the 2004 movie Mean Girls?  One of my fav’s from that time frame, quotes from the movie are ingrained in pop culture, and the movie featured prominent acting talent.  The movie was written by Tina Fey who is a Saturday Night Live alum and starred in the movie alongside Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Tim Meadows, and Amanda Seyfried.  To get your Mean Girls fix and experience “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” or “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen”, check out the DVD or audiobook here at the Library and throw on an extra-large pink polo shirt!

Cinnamon rolls…I mean, need I say more?  Ok, I will.  Whether for breakfast or a late-night hankering fulfillment, cinnamon rolls are perfect for chilly weather.  In my opinion, these are best served warm with freshly brewed coffee or a glass of milk.  For Cinnamon Roll Day, try making some from scratch.  The Salina Public Library has several books on baking with yeast and dough to give you a starting point.  Take a glance through the catalog to find what suits you.  If you are new to this type of baking, even if they do not look that pretty, they are sure to taste delicious with maple, caramel, cream cheese, or any flavor of icing.

People should always be nice to each other, but on this day, keep it at the forefront of your mind and commit to having positive interactions.  Compliment a co-worker whose contributions sometimes go unnoticed, surprise a family member or friend with a “just because” gift, or donate to a local organization.  You never really know what someone is going through, so just be kind.

I do not know about you, but for me, this is one of the most important seasonings you can add to your dishes.  You can never have too much garlic!  For Garlic Lovers Day, order your favorite garlic-centric dish such as a pizza with extra garlic dipping sauce, garlic knots, or garlic chicken and broccoli.  The possibilities are basically endless because garlic is delicious in a plethora of savory dishes.  Get some inspiration in the User’s Guide To Garlic by Stephen Fulder.

Plain black coffee serves its purpose – caffeine.  However, iced coffee is not only delicious and refreshing, it affects the body in a different way than the traditional hot brew.  Drop for drop, you are getting the same amount of caffeine.  However, most people drink hot coffee at a different rate than cold coffee, which impacts how quickly the caffeine kicks in.  The faster you drink it, the faster the effects are felt.  I do not know about you, but I prefer my caffeine fix to come with a quickness.  

Frappes originated in Greece when a businessman was unable to locate a hot water source to make instant coffee.  He used cold water and ice instead, and the rest is history.  There are many different flavor combinations and establishments where you can experience a frappe-style beverage, so pick your favorite and enjoy.

If you have never tasted a pierogi, you are seriously missing out.  Pierogies are nothing short of tiny heavenly plump pockets of deliciousness.  The first time I tried one was when I went perusing local shops in Boston.  They come stuffed with your choice of meats, cheeses, potatoes, or veggies, pierogies are fried in butter, and topped with the likes of sour cream or some sort of savory gravy.  If you are feeling froggy, make some dessert pierogies with apples and cinnamon or strawberries and cream cheese.  Maybe even make a quick glaze with confectioner sugar and milk.

October 9: International Beer and Pizza Day

Pizza is an all around popular dish, no matter how you prefer to top it.  Why not wash it down with an ice-cold beer for the perfect pairing?  The bitterness of the beer will cut the richness of the pizza, leaving you with a perfectly balanced palate. Angel food cake is a delicious blank slate with its light and fluffy texture.  Grab one from the grocery store or local bakery and top it with coconut icing, chocolate frosting, or berries and whipped cream for a quick and easy sweet treat.  

Southern food has long embodied some of my favorite cuisines.  From Po’ Boys and gumbo to fried chicken and peach cobbler, the South knows how to throw down in the kitchen and has a rich history to boot.  Test your Southern cooking skills by starting with some simple recipes like red beans and rice or banana pudding.  Use the Southern Heirloom Cooking: 200 Treasured Feel-Good Recipes by Norma Jean McQueen Haydel.  Not only do these dishes showcase the delicious flavors of the South, but they are packed with history.  While making a Southern meal, look into the history of the dish you decide to make.  Then you can feed your belly, your mind, and your soul simultaneously.

The state food of Louisiana is gumbo.  With ingredients such as fresh shellfish or sausage, delicious stock, along with bell peppers, onions, and celery, homemade gumbo is versatile and packed with flavor.  You are able to utilize what you have on hand as there are no set rules.  Add your favorite hot sauce or Cajun seasoning for an extra kick to celebrate this day.

Grab a handful and pop them in your mouth.  Better yet, sort them by color before eating them.  I love blue ones.  What can’t you do with an M&amp;M?  The options are endless: bake them in cookies or bars, put them on top of ice cream or pies, decorate a cake, or eat them all on their own.  While the original plain M&amp;Ms were created in 1941, these days there are several other varieties, including peanut, peanut butter, mint, coffee, and caramel.  Choose your favorite way to enjoy these candy-coated chocolates and celebrate National M&amp;M Day!

If you have been looking for an excuse to bake a pie or whip up a banana split, National Dessert Day is the perfect day to do it. Indulge in your favorite delicious dessert on this day, or try a new recipe.  You cannot go wrong when it comes to dessert.

If you do not know what a cheese curd is or have never partaken in one, what are you doing with your life?  No one ever said the name cheese curd was the most appealing, however, these deep-fried blobs of cheese are so insanely tasty that most can overlook that.  Whether you chow on some cheese curds for a snack, enjoy them as an appetizer before the main course, eat them as a side dish, National Cheese Curd Day is the time to get your cheese curd on.

Grab your cocktail glass and raise your pinkies—it’s time to toast to National Liqueur Day.  A liqueur is an alcoholic drink composed of spirits and other flavorings such as sugar, fruits, herbs, and spices.  Often served with or after dessert, they are typically heavily sweetened and un-aged unlike its cousin beer.  Sipped straight or mixed into a cocktail, liqueurs can add richness, sweetness, and warmth to nearly any happy hour. Gaudy refers to the tasteless use of overly bright, often clashing colors or excessive ornamentation on clothing.  On this day, grab the loudest, flashiest, and gaudiest getup in your closet and celebrate Wear Something Gaudy Day.  Compare your choice of attire with friends, family, and coworkers, have a contest for the gaudiest outfit, and enjoy a day filled with laughter and fun!

October 18: National Chocolate Cupcake Day

There is something about a chocolate cupcake that feels decadent, even though it is a handheld cake.  Whip up a batch of chocolate cupcakes to celebrate this dessert-themed holiday. Layer on the chocolate flavor with some chocolate frosting or go with another classic combination, such as buttercream or peanut butter frosting.

While old friends are staples, there is always room to make new connections.  You never know where you will find a new acquaintance who can become your new best friend.  So for National New Friends Day, strike up a conversation with a stranger or make a plan to hang out with an acquaintance, and find that common ground that could lead to friendship.  Explore the Salina Public Library’s calendar of events for opportunities to connect with individuals who share similar interests.

Finding fresh peaches or strawberries in the middle of winter is no easy task.  However, preserving your fruits in alcohol makes it possible to enjoy seasonal flavors all year long—and National Brandied Fruit Day is the perfect time to try this.  All you need is the fruit of your choice, brown sugar, white sugar, your favorite brandy, and at least one month of preserving time.

The Back To The Future movie series is an iconic 1980s flick.  October 21 is symbolic in the popular and epic movie series “Back to the Future,” as the day Marty and Doc travel to help save his family.  If you have not watched this series yet, head over to the Salina Public Library and check out the trilogy on DVD.  Do you also need a DVD player to watch this or other movies?  We have you covered in that area as well.  Whether you are already a fan or a newbie, pop some popcorn and sit down to enjoy this movie tonight.

While I prefer soft and chewy, slightly salted pretzels with cheese dip, other types of pretzels have long been a snack staple.  Having been present in North America since sometime in the late 18th century, pretzels come in a variety of flavors, shapes, sizes, glazes, and even as pizza.  Be sure to enjoy some pretzels on this day.

October 23: National Boston Cream Pie Day

Boston cream is a weakness of mine.  A donut, pie, cake, anything Boston Cream affiliated is alright by me.  That sweet delicious custard paired with chocolate is so satisfying.  Grab something Boston Cream from your local bakery or make your own for National Boston Cream Pie Day.

Bologna is not on my list of favorites, but some people really enjoy it.  This luncheon meat usually contains pork and various seasonings, but it also can be made out of other meats such as beef and there is even a vegetarian bologna.  If you have never tried it, make yourself a bologna sandwich in honor of National Bologna Day.

October 25: National Fine Art Appreciation Day

National Fine Art Appreciation Day falls on the birthday of artist Pablo Picasso.  To commemorate the day, try your hand at any artistic expression you enjoy, whether it be painting, dance, photography, music, or otherwise.  Art is subjective so engage in something that makes you happy.  Peruse the Salina Public Library’s calendar of events to find out when the next Gallery 708 showing is taking place.

With Halloween in close proximity, the pumpkins are out in full force and the possibilities of how to use one is vast.  Create an amazing carved pumpkin for your doorstep from Pumpkin Carving!: A Show-How Guide by Renee Kurilla, toast pumpkin seeds with your favorite seasonings, or blend pumpkin flesh into baked goods for seasonal flavor.

Recalling the taste of beer is not the most pleasant in my opinion.  That being said, there are many individuals who enjoy it and there is actually more to American beers than those bitter, flavorless brews.  In fact, the American craft beer movement has ushered in a golden age of beer.  For American Beer Day, check out your local brewery for some new-to-you beers.

Chocolate, whether dark, milk, white, and spiked with nuts and other goodies, is on my list of life’s greatest pleasures.  If you have not already treated yourself on National Chocolate Cupcake Day, or even if you already have, today is another good day to indulge in chocolate.  Make a chocolate-centric recipe, such as cake, brownies, ice cream, homemade candy, or splurge on some quality chocolate that you can let melt in your mouth piece by piece

I am a dog mom, however, if you are a cat parent, you know cats have many characteristics to love and celebrate.  They are absolutely adorable, cuddly (sometimes), and amusingly judgmental.  Today, give your feline a little extra love by extending playtime, treating it to a fun new toy, or offering a bit of catnip.

Moldy casserole.  Chicken that regrew its legs.  Spoiled milk.  A mystery blob wrapped in tinfoil.  Your refrigerator can be a scary place if not maintained.  Today is the day to conquer your procrastination and banish the ghosts of foods past by cleaning and organizing the fridge.  Start by tossing any old or spoiled food.  Then, clean the interior surfaces and produce bins.  Finally, reorganize your food.

After crafting costumes, carving pumpkins, and setting up a scary vignette at the front door, Halloween is finally here.  Kick back and admire your spooky work with a few candy bars before the trick-or-treaters snag them all.

Fall has a whole vibe all its own. It brings on cozy and layered apparel, cold weather comfort food recipes, and then there is the foliage. October is packed with food-centric holidays, such as National Dessert Day. As a self-declared foodie, I appreciate this. There are also creative celebrations, such as National Fine Art Appreciation Day. October is chock full of fantastic ways to celebrate and I have created a condensed version of several (mostly foodie) reasons to celebrate something for each day in October. While these may not be for everyone, there is bound to be something for everyone.<h2>October 1: World Vegetarian Day</h2>I personally could almost be a vegetarian, but I like some things like chicken and turkey way too much to completely sever ties with them. If this is something up your alley, finding a plant-based version of many popular dishes is simple. In the spirit of World Vegetarian Day, try some vegetarian recipes in the book Vegetarian Recipes For Everyone by Deborah Madison.<h2>October 2: International Day of Non-Violence</h2>The day represents a time to spread the message of peace and tolerance and is celebrated on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. Gandhi’s work advocated for nonviolent protest to stand up for freedom and civil rights. To learn more about Gandhi, check out All Men are Brothers: Life and Thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi as told in His Own Words by Mahatma Gandhi. <h2>October 3: ‘Mean Girls’ Appreciation Day</h2>Who does not love the 2004 movie Mean Girls? One of my fav’s from that time frame, quotes from the movie are ingrained in pop culture, and the movie featured prominent acting talent. The movie was written by Tina Fey who is a Saturday Night Live alum and starred in the movie alongside Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Tim Meadows, and Amanda Seyfried. To get your Mean Girls fix and experience “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” or “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen”, check out the DVD or audiobook here at the Library and throw on an extra-large pink polo shirt!<h2>October 4: Cinnamon Roll Day</h2>Cinnamon rolls…I mean, need I say more? Ok, I will. Whether for breakfast or a late-night hankering fulfillment, cinnamon rolls are perfect for chilly weather. In my opinion, these are best served warm with freshly brewed coffee or a glass of milk. For Cinnamon Roll Day, try making some from scratch. The Salina Public Library has several books on baking with yeast and dough to give you a starting point. Take a glance through the catalog to find what suits you. If you are new to this type of baking, even if they do not look that pretty, they are sure to taste delicious with maple, caramel, cream cheese, or any flavor of icing.<h2>October 5: National Be Nice Day </h2>People should always be nice to each other, but on this day, keep it at the forefront of your mind and commit to having positive interactions. Compliment a co-worker whose contributions sometimes go unnoticed, surprise a family member or friend with a “just because” gift, or donate to a local organization. You never really know what someone is going through, so just be kind.<h2>October 6: Garlic Lovers Day</h2>I do not know about you, but for me, this is one of the most important seasonings you can add to your dishes. You can never have too much garlic! For Garlic Lovers Day, order your favorite garlic-centric dish such as a pizza with extra garlic dipping sauce, garlic knots, or garlic chicken and broccoli. The possibilities are basically endless because garlic is delicious in a plethora of savory dishes. Get some inspiration in the User’s Guide To Garlic by Stephen Fulder.<h2>October 7: National Frappe Day</h2>Plain black coffee serves its purpose – caffeine. However, iced coffee is not only delicious and refreshing, it affects the body in a different way than the traditional hot brew. Drop for drop, you are getting the same amount of caffeine. However, most people drink hot coffee at a different rate than cold coffee, which impacts how quickly the caffeine kicks in. The faster you drink it, the faster the effects are felt. I do not know about you, but I prefer my caffeine fix to come with a quickness. Frappes originated in Greece when a businessman was unable to locate a hot water source to make instant coffee. He used cold water and ice instead, and the rest is history. There are many different flavor combinations and establishments where you can experience a frappe-style beverage, so pick your favorite and enjoy.<h2>October 8: National Pierogi Day</h2>If you have never tasted a pierogi, you are seriously missing out. Pierogies are nothing short of tiny heavenly plump pockets of deliciousness. The first time I tried one was when I went perusing local shops in Boston. They come stuffed with your choice of meats, cheeses, potatoes, or veggies, pierogies are fried in butter, and topped with the likes of sour cream or some sort of savory gravy. If you are feeling froggy, make some dessert pierogies with apples and cinnamon or strawberries and cream cheese. Maybe even make a quick glaze with confectioner sugar and milk.<h2>October 9: International Beer and Pizza Day</h2>Pizza is an all around popular dish, no matter how you prefer to top it. Why not wash it down with an ice-cold beer for the perfect pairing? The bitterness of the beer will cut the richness of the pizza, leaving you with a perfectly balanced palate. Grab one from the grocery store or local bakery and top it with coconut icing, chocolate frosting, or berries and whipped cream for a quick and easy sweet treat. <h2>October 11: Southern Food Heritage Day</h2>Southern food has long embodied some of my favorite cuisines. From Po’ Boys and gumbo to fried chicken and peach cobbler, the South knows how to throw down in the kitchen and has a rich history to boot. Test your Southern cooking skills by starting with some simple recipes like red beans and rice or banana pudding. Use the Southern Heirloom Cooking: 200 Treasured Feel-Good Recipes by Norma Jean McQueen Haydel. Not only do these dishes showcase the delicious flavors of the South, but they are packed with history. While making a Southern meal, look into the history of the dish you decide to make. Then you can feed your belly, your mind, and your soul simultaneously.<h2>October 12: National Gumbo Day</h2>The state food of Louisiana is gumbo. With ingredients such as fresh shellfish or sausage, delicious stock, along with bell peppers, onions, and celery, homemade gumbo is versatile and packed with flavor. You are able to utilize what you have on hand as there are no set rules. Add your favorite hot sauce or Cajun seasoning for an extra kick to celebrate this day.<h2>October 13: ​National M&amp;M Day</h2>Grab a handful and pop them in your mouth. Better yet, sort them by color before eating them. I love blue ones. What can’t you do with an M&amp;M? The options are endless: bake them in cookies or bars, put them on top of ice cream or pies, decorate a cake, or eat them all on their own. While the original plain M&amp;Ms were created in 1941, these days there are several other varieties, including peanut, peanut butter, mint, coffee, and caramel. Choose your favorite way to enjoy these candy-coated chocolates and celebrate National M&amp;M Day!<h2>October 14: National Dessert Day</h2>If you have been looking for an excuse to bake a pie or whip up a banana split, National Dessert Day is the perfect day to do it. Indulge in your favorite delicious dessert on this day, or try a new recipe. You cannot go wrong when it comes to dessert.<h2>October 15: National Cheese Curd Day</h2>If you do not know what a cheese curd is or have never partaken in one, what are you doing with your life? No one ever said the name cheese curd was the most appealing, however, these deep-fried blobs of cheese are so insanely tasty that most can overlook that. Whether you chow on some cheese curds for a snack, enjoy them as an appetizer before the main course, eat them as a side dish, National Cheese Curd Day is the time to get your cheese curd on.<h2>October 16: National Liqueur Day</h2>Grab your cocktail glass and raise your pinkies—it’s time to toast to National Liqueur Day. A liqueur is an alcoholic drink composed of spirits and other flavorings such as sugar, fruits, herbs, and spices. Often served with or after dessert, they are typically heavily sweetened and un-aged unlike its cousin beer. Sipped straight or mixed into a cocktail, liqueurs can add richness, sweetness, and warmth to nearly any happy hour. Mix up your favorite drink or try something new to celebrate this day by checking out That’s The Spirit: 100 Of The World’s Greatest Spirits, Liqueurs And Digestifs To Drink With Style by Jonathan Ray.<h2>October 17: Wear Something Gaudy Day</h2>Gaudy refers to the tasteless use of overly bright, often clashing colors or excessive ornamentation on clothing. On this day, grab the loudest, flashiest, and gaudiest getup in your closet and celebrate Wear Something Gaudy Day. Compare your choice of attire with friends, family, and coworkers, have a contest for the gaudiest outfit, and enjoy a day filled with laughter and fun!<h2>October 18: National Chocolate Cupcake Day</h2>There is something about a chocolate cupcake that feels decadent, even though it is a handheld cake. Whip up a batch of chocolate cupcakes to celebrate this dessert-themed holiday. Layer on the chocolate flavor with some chocolate frosting or go with another classic combination, such as buttercream or peanut butter frosting.<h2>October 19: National New Friends Day</h2>While old friends are staples, there is always room to make new connections. You never know where you will find a new acquaintance who can become your new best friend. So for National New Friends Day, strike up a conversation with a stranger or make a plan to hang out with an acquaintance, and find that common ground that could lead to friendship. Explore the Salina Public Library’s calendar of events for opportunities to connect with individuals who share similar interests.<h2>October 20: National Brandied Fruit Day</h2>Finding fresh peaches or strawberries in the middle of winter is no easy task. However, preserving your fruits in alcohol makes it possible to enjoy seasonal flavors all year long—and National Brandied Fruit Day is the perfect time to try this. All you need is the fruit of your choice, brown sugar, white sugar, your favorite brandy, and at least one month of preserving time.<h2>October 21: Back to the Future Day</h2>The Back To The Future movie series is an iconic 1980s flick. October 21 is symbolic in the popular and epic movie series “Back to the Future,” as the day Marty and Doc travel to help save his family. If you have not watched this series yet, head over to the Salina Public Library and check out the trilogy on DVD. Do you also need a DVD player to watch this or other movies? We have you covered in that area as well. Whether you are already a fan or a newbie, pop some popcorn and sit down to enjoy this movie tonight.<h2>October 22: Eat a Pretzel Day</h2>While I prefer soft and chewy, slightly salted pretzels with cheese dip, other types of pretzels have long been a snack staple. Having been present in North America since sometime in the late 18th century, pretzels come in a variety of flavors, shapes, sizes, glazes, and even as pizza. Be sure to enjoy some pretzels on this day.<h2>October 23: National Boston Cream Pie Day</h2>Boston cream is a weakness of mine. A donut, pie, cake, anything Boston Cream affiliated is alright by me. That sweet delicious custard paired with chocolate is so satisfying. Grab something Boston Cream from your local bakery or make your own for National Boston Cream Pie Day.<h2>October 24: National Bologna Day</h2>Bologna is not on my list of favorites, but some people really enjoy it. This luncheon meat usually contains pork and various seasonings, but it also can be made out of other meats such as beef and there is even a vegetarian bologna. If you have never tried it, make yourself a bologna sandwich in honor of National Bologna Day.<h2>October 25: National Fine Art Appreciation Day</h2>National Fine Art Appreciation Day falls on the birthday of artist Pablo Picasso. To commemorate the day, try your hand at any artistic expression you enjoy, whether it be painting, dance, photography, music, or otherwise. Art is subjective so engage in something that makes you happy. Peruse the Salina Public Library’s calendar of events to find out when the next Gallery 708 showing is taking place.<h2>October 26: National Pumpkin Day</h2>With Halloween in close proximity, the pumpkins are out in full force and the possibilities of how to use one is vast. Create an amazing carved pumpkin for your doorstep from Pumpkin Carving!: A Show-How Guide by Renee Kurilla, toast pumpkin seeds with your favorite seasonings, or blend pumpkin flesh into baked goods for seasonal flavor.<h2>October 27: American Beer Day</h2>Recalling the taste of beer is not the most pleasant in my opinion. That being said, there are many individuals who enjoy it and there is actually more to American beers than those bitter, flavorless brews. In fact, the American craft beer movement has ushered in a golden age of beer. For American Beer Day, check out your local brewery for some new-to-you beers.<h2>October 28: National Chocolate Day</h2>Chocolate, whether dark, milk, white, and spiked with nuts and other goodies, is on my list of life’s greatest pleasures. If you have not already treated yourself on National Chocolate Cupcake Day, or even if you already have, today is another good day to indulge in chocolate. Make a chocolate-centric recipe, such as cake, brownies, ice cream, homemade candy, or splurge on some quality chocolate that you can let melt in your mouth piece by piece<h2>October 29: National Cat Day</h2>I am a dog mom, however, if you are a cat parent, you know cats have many characteristics to love and celebrate. They are absolutely adorable, cuddly (sometimes), and amusingly judgmental. Today, give your feline a little extra love by extending playtime, treating it to a fun new toy, or offering a bit of catnip.<h2>October 30: Haunted Refrigerator Night</h2>Moldy casserole. Chicken that regrew its legs. Spoiled milk. A mystery blob wrapped in tinfoil. Your refrigerator can be a scary place if not maintained. Today is the day to conquer your procrastination and banish the ghosts of foods past by cleaning and organizing the fridge. Start by tossing any old or spoiled food. Then, clean the interior surfaces and produce bins. Finally, reorganize your food.<h2>October 31: Halloween</h2>After crafting costumes, carving pumpkins, and setting up a scary vignette at the front door, Halloween is finally here. Kick back and admire your spooky work with a few candy bars before the trick-or-treaters snag them all.

Salina Public Library: 31 unconventional reasons to celebrate in Oct.

Are you ready to embark on a journey through time and history? This Saturday, an iconic piece of railroad heritage, the&nbsp;1919 Baldwin 4-6-2 “Pacific” type locomotive, Santa Fe #3415&nbsp;steam engine, will make its final run before undergoing an FRA mandatory overhaul. 

The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad invites you to participate in this historic moment as we bid farewell to this magnificent&nbsp;locomotive.

The Santa Fe #3415 steam engine is not just any train — it's a true masterpiece of engineering and a symbol of a bygone era. This locomotive has been a beloved part of our railroad's history and a cherished sight for both locals and visitors alike.

With its sleek design and powerful steam-driven heart, the Santa Fe #3415 has captured the imagination of train enthusiasts for generations. But what makes this locomotive truly special is the stories it carries. 

It has traversed countless miles of track, carrying passengers and freight, witnessing the changing landscapes and cultures along the way. Its whistle has echoed through valleys, its wheels have rolled over bridges, and its smokestack has billowed steam into the sky. 

Riding aboard the Santa Fe 3415 is like stepping into a living time capsule, offering a unique glimpse into the past.

The 1919 Baldwin 4-6-2 “Pacific” type locomotive, Santa Fe #3415, was moved to its present location at the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad yard in April 1996 from the city park in Abilene where it had spent the last 40 years. 

Locomotive #3415 was built in 1919 and was in regular service in Santa Fe’s Argentine District out of Kansas City. The railroad donated the locomotive to the city of Abilene in 1954, and it was placed in the city park.

In 1996, the city donated it to the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad. It was moved from the park and placed on the railroad’s tracks near the depot, where it sat on display until restoration was started in 2005. 

This is the only operating steam locomotive in the state and is one of only three operational, former Santa Fe steam locomotives. The steamer has operated about once a month on special weekends on our five-mile-long track, a former Rock Island Railroad branch, through the Smoky Hill River Valley between Abilene and Enterprise, Kansas.

On Friday, Sept. 15, 30 photographers from across the nation visited Abilene for a photography ride along the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad as a fundraiser by Dak Dillon, owner of St. Louis-based&nbsp;Hub &amp; Spoke, a boutique marketing and creative agency.

"I would call the photoshoot a kind of an extension of what the steam locomotive is for the railroad and really for the entire tourism industry in Abilene because it is its symbol. It's a symbol everywhere," said Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad volunteer Steve Smethers.&nbsp;

The event raised $10,000 toward the locomotive's complete remodel. Smethers said this would fund the first step of the $600,000 remodel.

"I think that really illustrates just the power in the draw of the steam locomotive," Smethers said.

The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad plans to host photography events in the future, even while Santa Fe #3415 undergoes its FRA mandatory overhaul.

This means it will be out of commission for the foreseeable torture until funding is available to complete this massive undertaking,&nbsp;which is essential maintenance to ensure its continued safe operation. 

This last run is your final opportunity to experience the magic of this historic steam engine before it temporarily retires from the tracks.

Passengers last chance before the overhaul will be on Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

All Aboard for a Grand Farewell Ride: Santa Fe #3415's Last Run Before Overhaul

Moody, alternative rock band <a href="https://www.bootlegmercy.com/">Bootleg Mercy</a>&nbsp;plans to take the City Lights Stage from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, as <a href="https://www.salinadowntown.org/">Salina Downtown</a>'s last Live First Friday of 2023.&nbsp;

City Lights Stage, located at Ash Street and Santa Fe Avenue, hosted other local bands this summer, with Bootleg Mercy to finish out the season.

According to its website, the Kansas-based hard rock group began as a cover band in the early 2010s but released its first original EP, or "extended play," in 2014 titled "Pictures."

Since then, the music group has continued to release music that garnered international accolades and played in the number-one spot for Los Angeles-based <a href="https://www.indiestarradio.com/">Indie Star Radio</a>’s Top 21 for four straight weeks.

Salina Downtown will also host an Artist's Reception from 5 to 8 p.m. at 116 East Iron Avenue, celebrating Tom Fleming's "Stairs of Methuselah" by Subvert Studio.

Join Central High School as it presents "Noises Off by Michael Frayn on Oct 6-8.&nbsp;

"Noises Off" takes a fond look at the follies of theatre folk, whose susceptibility to out-of-control egos, memory loss, and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk adventure. This play-within-a-play captures a touring theatre troupe’s production of "Nothing On" in three stages: dress rehearsal, performance during the tour, and a performance towards the end of a debilitating run.

Central Theatre teacher and director of "Noises Off",&nbsp;Barbara Hilt said this isn't the first time "Noises Off" has been performed at Central.&nbsp;

“Noises Off is one of the most well-known farces of all time," Hilt said. &nbsp;"This script has been performed by many high schools and theatre groups around the country as well as at least twice at Central High School if not more. The last time it was performed at Central High School was around 2008 and Central High School took their performance to the Kansas Thespian Festival and to the International Thespian Festival that year."

 Frayn gives us a window into the inner workings of theatre behind the scenes, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the dress rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance. Brimming with slapstick comedy, "Noises Off" is a delightful backstage farce, complete with slamming doors, falling trousers, and -- of course -- flying sardines!

"Our ticket prices are just a bit higher than our other plays this season so that we can help to offset the cost of having our show adjudicated. We have also waived all online credit processing fees this year so that we can better serve our patrons," Hilt said.&nbsp;

This production is being submitted to the Kansas Thespian Festival for mainstage adjudication. Running time is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes including two 10-minute intermissions between each act.

They were in previous CHS shows such as One Man, Two Guv’nors as Christine and acted and directed in one acts. They made their debut on the Theater Salina stage in Bus Stop. In their free time, Q enjoys reading and listening to music. This is their second show in the round and it’s their favorite form of staging. They hope you enjoy the show— from every angle.

He has been in Central productions of The Explorers Club (Lucius), Anastasia (dancer/ensemble) and also partcipates in many Theatre Salina productions and is a member of the Iron Street Dance Company. GARRY LEJEUNE…………………..…....ZANDER FLENER* Zander most recently played Sky in Mamma Mia! He is the son of Chris and Angel Flener. Zander is a member of Free Spirit and has been in choir for six years. He just attended the Kansas All-State Choir. This is Zander's first play and he is so excited for everyone to see the hard work that the cast and crew has put into this performance.

BROOKE ASHTON…………….MACKENZIE MARTINEZ* Mackenzie is the grand-daughter of Rex and Ronda Lovin. This is Mackenzie's first play ever! Helen Mirren dominates every frame of director Guy Nattiv’s illuminating portrait of the former Prime Minister of Israel, Golda Meir. That’s a tough task when Mirren’s aristocratic hauteur, used to Oscar-winning effect in The Queen, is tamped down under tons of latex prosthetic makeup, an unappealing wig, utilitarian wardrobe, stooped posture, and constant haze of cigarette smoke.

 Yet the genius of Mirren’s performance is that she nails Meir’s toughness, intimidating resolve, disconcerting Midwestern accent (Meir grew up in Milwaukee), and formidable ability to “read” and manipulate people: traits that disarmed many world leaders thinking they were dealing with a grandmotherly pushover. Nattiv and screenwriter Nicholas Martin eschew the standard childhood-to-deathbed biopic approach; instead they use The Queen’s gambit of exploring the subject’s personality through a key event, one which allows us to see many facets of the protagonist’s character. 

In this case, the focus is the Yom Kippur War, the controversial 1973 conflict that helped create a specific identity for Golda Meir—and a developing Israel. Nattiv’s absorbing film (and Mirren’s naturally empathetic approach) help humanize a daunting, sometimes inscrutable figure, without sentimentalizing or softening the rough edges of Meir’s political actions. Martin’s script helps explicate the conflict without oversimplifying it, and the period atmosphere helps transport viewers into the tumultuous Cold War era. 

There’s no on-screen violence but the impact of the war is palpable, never letting us forget that while Meir and her generals were playing chess with Egypt and Syria, it was the soldiers and civilians in the field who were the pawns. They were delighted to sell out Forest National Arena where Queen filmed the concert set piece videos such as Hammer To Fall and Don't Stop Me Now.Killer Queen then joined forces with Bjorn Again and The Bootleg Beatles for a Waverley Stadium show in Edinburgh.&nbsp; It was this performance that led to the band being selected to represent Queen in a re-staged tribute LiveAid concert held by Sir Bob Geldof. They performed with him at his arena charity concert to raise funds for the homeless.Killer Queen set their sights on America including the awe-inspiring Red Rocks Arena in Colorado – one of the countries most prestigious venues. The Beatles, Springsteen, U2 have all played there and the band are delighted it's become a regular sell-out fixture on Killer Queen's tour sheet.

During 2020 the band released a single in the style of Queen written by Patrick. “We'll Fight Again” delighted Queen fans all over the world.&nbsp;2023 sees the band pull in huge arena audiences in Cardiff, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Leeds and Nottingham with more sell out shows in Red Rocks and Austin City Limits.

Some might say that Flora brings a lot of her problems on herself: her hedonistic, hard-partying lifestyle made her a 17-year-old mom and left her with feckless musician husband Ian (Jack Reynor) and surly, now-teenage son Max (Orén Kinlan). 

She can't quite resist the allure of nightclubs and meaningless one-night stands, a respite from her dead-end job as a nanny and the constant arguments with her crime-dabbling son and soon-to-be-ex-husband. As played by luminous up-and-comer Eve Hewson, though, Flora is sympathetic and beguiling, bringing us to her side immediately. 

Director John Carney delighted audiences with the Irish romance&nbsp;Once&nbsp;and coming-of-age charmer&nbsp;Sing Street—movies infused with the pure, dopamine pleasure of music, and making music. Carney's latest is another toe-tapping tribute to pop-rock, as Flora decides she’ll learn how to play the guitar—and discovers a way of connecting with husband and son. In a welcome return to the screen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is terrific as Jeff, a long-haired, opinionated Californian rocker who teaches guitar via Zoom. 

When Flora thinks she’s falling in love with her long-distance instructor, it makes perfect cinematic sense for Jeff to magically appear next to Flora, encouraging her creative efforts. Carney’s sincerity makes this a winning confection, and Hewson is a real discovery. She’s got a musical pedigree—her father is U2 singer Bono—and lots of dad’s natural charisma and presence, but Hewson has a star quality of her own, creating a heroine who’s imperfect, passionate, vulnerable, yet resilient as well.

 Flora’s relationship with Ian (more like squabbling siblings than parent and child) is complex, frustrating, funny, and deeply heartfelt. It’s the solid emotional core of a feel-good film filled with memorable tunes, wry humor, and more than a few joyful tears.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina Art Center Cinema presents, 'Flora and Son' Sept. 29-Oct. 4

The smell of funnel cakes and kettle corn filled the air in front of the Smoky Hill Museum on Saturday. The sounds of hammers striking iron and live music greeted hundreds of guests at the annual Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair.&nbsp;

The day began at 10 a.m. with history-themed floats downtown, followed by a chili cook-off, live music, food trucks and free entry to the Smoky Hill Museum.

"We've got some great music — all brand new bands this year," said the Smoky Hill Museum Director Susan Hawksworth. "We're just excited to see so many people here."

 </figure>The musicians and bands who visited the fair's stage included Geff and Dawn Dawson, Ghost Town Revival, Jaron Bell and Nick Tayler.&nbsp;At 2 p.m., Hawksworth announced the chili cook-off winners.&nbsp;Out of the six stands, patrons of the fair chose Aliento de Vida BIC Church with Hector and Maribel De Leon, Xochitl Paez Cervantes, Juan Carlos and Daniel Ramos for the best chili.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Aliento de Vida won for the third year in a row.The crowd chose Beans and Rolls for its best booth. Some comments about the winning booth included its design and the way the team interacted with chili tasters.&nbsp;Besides the chili cook-off, the fair included Old West exhibits like archery, horseshoe smithing, knot tying and more."I like all the little activities like, I'm 26, and I want to go shoot a bow," said Katie Probst, a Salina resident who visited the street fair.<figure>
