Local Salina band the <a href="https://www.sunsetsinners.com/">Sunset Sinners</a> will headline this year’s Rockin' the Fe along with good friends Paramount &amp; Visual Lies.

Rockin the Fe will take place Friday, February 9, 2024 doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Sunset Sinners have exploded on the music scene with a brand of music they call Whiskey Barrel Rock and draw a lot of comparisons to The Black Crowes, ZZ Top, Zac Brown Band and Blackberry Smoke.

The Sinners have two albums out along with their newest single “Coming Home” and are back in the studio in Austin, Texas at the famed Yellow Dog Studios this January. In 2021 they won the Nashville JMA Award for Best Southern/Country Rock Act  &amp; have had songs on the Nashville Music Radio Charts.

Their 2 biggest hits “Always Time For One More Beer” and "Friday Night” have been re-mastered and are being rereleased this January. They have also garnered a large fan base overseas with Sinner music being played on over 175 radio stations across France, Germany, Sweden &amp; the UK. They also greatly follow and appreciate the military, veterans and first responders.

Bradley Cooper surprised many with his assured, unabashedly emotional but just-this-side-of-melodramatic remake of a venerable tragic romance, A Star Is Born. His follow-up cements his enormous talent both helming the film and starring, but the ambitious scope and complexity of the material is amped up to 11 in this fascinating portrait of composer Leonard Bernstein.&nbsp;

Complexity is crucial because the story of Bernstein’s 27-year marriage to Felicia Montealegre is easy to reduce to glib analysis: “famous closeted gay man hides his sexuality in the mid-20th century by marrying a devoted woman willing to settle for a sham relationship.” That doesn’t tell the whole story, and it dehumanizes two&nbsp;very fascinating individuals. Cooper and co-scenarist Josh Singer take the relationship seriously, showing its real challenges, setbacks, and moments of honest romance. Yes, Leonard and Felicia loved each other—in a complicated way that’s exceptionally portrayed by Cooper and co-star Carey Mulligan. Just as A Star Is Born&nbsp;depended on the film’s balancing its focus on both partners, Maestro is not a biopic where the “great man” is occasionally seen through the eyes of his less significant spouse; here, Leonard and Felicia are equally important even though it’s Bernstein’s wondrous music that propels the film, whether it’s music from West Side Story&nbsp;or (in a great scene) Mahler’s “Resurrection” which Bernstein triumphantly conducts with the London Symphony Orchestra.&nbsp;

Leonard’s boundless creative energy is beguiling, but Felicia’s more grounded, pragmatic, and worldly-wise personality provide a great counterpoint, especially when Leonard’s philandering gets out of control. There’s no shortage of chemistry between Cooper and Mulligan, each holding their own and commanding the screen. The use of gorgeous black-and-white cinematography, transitioning to color in the later decades not only offers an evocative sense of history but reminds us of an era when movie actors were truly stars. That era is still with us, and the dynamic central performances illuminate every frame of this modern-day masterpiece. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina Symphony to present Christmas Festival Concert Dec. 9-10

The kitchen design by JGR Architects is part of the public gallery currently under construction at&nbsp;Salina&nbsp;Art&nbsp;Center. This gallery space provides the opportunity to explore&nbsp;art&nbsp;through exhibitions and&nbsp;ARTery maker space. Additionally, the design allows the&nbsp;Art&nbsp;Center&nbsp;to build new revenue streams as a rental space for small events downtown, educational workshops, culinary&nbsp;arts programming, and special&nbsp;Art&nbsp;Center&nbsp;events, including exhibition openings and fundraisers.

Building Creatively aligned perfectly with JRI’s commitment to youth and the community through hands-on experiences and unique educational opportunities with cooking, sustainable farming, and using food to unite people.

Like JRI’s vision, the&nbsp;Art&nbsp;Center&nbsp;has used food experiences for decades to explore cultural diversity and encourage community connections. When food is a work of&nbsp;art, it stimulates all our senses. Food is a part of us, reflecting our culture and traditions. Traditional cuisine is passed down from one generation to the next. Immigrants bring the food of their countries with them wherever they go, and cooking traditional food is a way of preserving their culture when they move to new places.

“We are honored to contribute to the&nbsp;Salina&nbsp;Art&nbsp;Center&nbsp;and help foster the interest of both&nbsp;art&nbsp;and food in our community,” says Jason Ingermanson, founder and CEO of JRI Hospitality. “We are committed equally to our community and to creating memorable experiences through food.”

The&nbsp;Art&nbsp;Center&nbsp;has worked with Blue Skye Brewery to host Indian-themed dinners. It has brought in private chefs to host dinners that inspire deep conversations on topics of significance. They’ve hosted programming on fermentation, garden-to-table salads, and other sustainable food-based workshops. The&nbsp;Art&nbsp;Center&nbsp;provided educational lectures on tea ceremonies, exploring how food is a significant part of culture. Most of these opportunities were part of exhibitions and visiting&nbsp;artists programs. Investing in a culinary&nbsp;arts program is building on the success of past programming while looking at future opportunities for expanded programming.

Misty Serene, executive director for&nbsp;Salina&nbsp;Art&nbsp;Center, believes a culinary&nbsp;arts program is an important step into the future. “I dream of hosting a farm-to-table after-school program where kids learn about growing and cooking food. I see us partnering with organizations like USD 305, the&nbsp;Salina&nbsp;Public Library,&nbsp;Salina&nbsp;Emergency Aid Food Bank and local chefs – the possibilities are endless, and it couldn’t happen without all the amazing donors like the Ingermansons who believe in our vision.”

Salina&nbsp;Art&nbsp;Center&nbsp;donors are investing $1.3 million in external and internal renovations and infrastructure enhancements to improve accessibility, safety, visibility, and engagement by reimagining public spaces and elevating member and visitor experiences through technology, environmental amenities, and new programming.&nbsp;

Salina&nbsp;Art&nbsp;Center&nbsp;launched the Building Creatively capital campaign on May 25, 2022, and has secured 77% of the needed funds through private donations. An initial goal of $1M was reached, but costs associated with the project skyrocketed between 2022 and today. JRI Hospitality pledges funds to Salina Art Center

The Central High School Theatre production of Noises Off by Michael Frayn has been selected as a mainstage production at the 2024 Kansas Thespian Festival that takes place in January in Wichita at Century II Convention Center.

Barbara Hilt, Central High School Theatre teacher and program director, said this is a high honor since there are only five productions state-wide that are selected to perform. Members of Thespian Troupe 639 will travel to the festival on January 3rd to reconstruct their two-story set in the Mary Jane Teall Theater at Century II and perform on January 4th for a packed house of other theatre students and teachers from around the state.

The Kansas Thespian Festival will be attended by over 1,700 students, teachers, and college representatives this year and will be one of the largest festivals to date. The production is directed by Hilt, and program director who is assisted by Bill Weaver, Central High School Technical Director.

Adjudication was held by Kansas Thespians utilizing a judging panel in order to determine which shows would be selected for the mainstage and out of all the schools who submitted their productions for adjudication, Central High School was selected as one of the five productions that will have a chance to perform at the festival in January.

Mustangs Central Theatre will be performing an encore performance of their production on December 29 at 7:00 p.m. patrons can come and watch their production as they prepare for the state festival and they will be accepting any donations towards their trip to help offset the cost of transporting their set and paying for meals and hotel expenses at state for the load-in day of the production. <a href="https://www.onthestage.tickets/salina-central-high-school/donate">Anyone wishing to contribute can give free-will donations at their encore performances or visit their website in order to make a donation.</a>

Alexander Payne doesn’t make unlikeable characters lovable, but he has a gift for making them prickly, complex, and relatable. We may not want to see ourselves in the “heroes” of Election, Sideways, or Nebraska—but Payne makes these flawed, tragicomic figures compelling. His favored actor is Paul Giamatti, a schlubby Everyman who conveys frustration, pettiness, and simmering rage better than anyone.

In The Holdovers, Giamatti gives his greatest performance as Paul Hunham, a history teacher at a posh private boys’ school in the early ‘70s. Hunham’s no Mr. Chips: his caustic wit, sneering intellectualism, and constant criticism of everyone in sight gains him no admirers. He’s not completely wrong in his barbs at the school administration, which curries favor with their wealthier patrons; or the entitled, underachieving students who don’t appreciate their privilege. 

Hunham gets assigned to supervise the “holdovers,” the students who can’t return home for the Christmas holidays; he cares little for his charges, including Angus (Dominic Sessa), a bright pupil who’s also a defiant, spoiled brat. The holdovers eventually dwindle down to Hunham, Angus, and Mary (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), the school’s head cook who’s dealing with her own personal loss.

The forced togetherness brings forth some genuine soul-searching. In a drippier, more sentimental movie, Hunham and Angus would become best friends, but Payne’s more authentic: in his film, it’s enough that the self-pitying teacher and lonely rich kid develop mutual understanding and the beginnings of empathy. Filmed in a style that deliberately evokes the messy, character-driven aesthetic of 1970’s American filmmaking, The Holdovers already feels like a classic—and with its exceptional acting, brilliant script by David Hemingson, humor, and surprising optimism, this unusual Christmas parable is destined to become a future classic.

Americans take for granted the notion of a “free&nbsp;press,” but what does a society look like when that freedom doesn’t exist? Sadly, we don’t have to travel abroad to see censorship and suppression of the media. It’s happening in many parts of America, including Native American reservations which are not bound to the constitutional protections of a free&nbsp;press.

This sobering, frighteningly pertinent documentary gives us a glimpse at the kind of dystopia that can occur when political leaders flex their authoritarian muscle against the&nbsp;press. It also serves as a fascinating inside look at the political processes and ideological battles within the indigenous community, a reminder of the cultural diversity existing within our own country.

Rebecca Landsberry-Baker, executive director of the Native American Journalists Association, and Joe Peeler, a veteran documentarian, co-direct this gripping look at the efforts of Angel Ellis, a journalist determined to restore the Free&nbsp;Press&nbsp;Act enacted by the Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma. After only three years, a group of legislators repealed the act, effectively giving control of the media to tribal government instead of an independent editorial board.

With alarming swiftness, the news media became a propaganda tool of corrupt political leaders, enraging not just activist like Ellis but ordinary citizens. What’s truly frightening about this eye-opening film is how familiar-sounding are the justifications for suppressing public information.

We’re seeing examples of&nbsp;press&nbsp;intimidation elsewhere in the country, but&nbsp;Bad&nbsp;Press&nbsp;reveals just how&nbsp;bad&nbsp;things can get, and reminds viewers that independent journalism is essential to the freedom we hold dear—and can be taken away before we realize it.

Smoky Hill Museum's Holiday Open House — Saturday, Nov. 18

Director Maryam Keshavarz’s colorful, often hilarious autobiographical feature is an American assimilation story without the ponderous messaging and oppressive tone of many such films. Not that the family and romantic travails of twentysomething Leila (Layla Mohammadi in a confidently charismatic performance) lack meaningful drama. 

But Keshavarz maintains a light touch, even as she makes sharp points about the prejudice and alienation faced by Iranian-born families in America. 

The central dynamic is the frosty relationship between Leila and her career-driven mother, Shirin (Niousha Noor), who became the breadwinner of a large family (Leila and eight brothers) when she and her doctor husband emigrated to the U.S. and he wasn’t allowed to practice medicine. 

Shirin quickly learned English, earned her GED, and became a real estate agent, rapidly advancing in the profession and making Leila’s lack of ambition more egregious. 

Her lesbian relationships haven’t met mom’s approval, either, and when Leila gets pregnant from a one-night stand with Max (Tom Byrne), that seems unlikely to change. 

About halfway through the film, Keshavarz shifts focus from Leila to Shirin, revealing much of her history in flashbacks (including an arranged marriage to an older man when she was 13) and partially showing what shaped her perspective on her daughter’s uncomfortably “Western” ways. It helps develop sympathy for both sides of the mother-daughter conflict, and this open-hearted approach allows this film to be serious and light-hearted, sharply satiric but often rude, crude, and laugh-out-loud funny. 

It’s a movie with smart insights into cultural imperialism and generational discord—but can also conjure scenes like a joyful group dance to a cover of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” or Leila defiantly sporting a “burka-kini.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Newly restored in 4K to coincide with its 40th anniversary, the 1984 film was directed by renowned filmmaker Jonathan Demme and is considered by critics as the greatest concert film of all time. 

Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison along with Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt. The live performance was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December of 1983 and features Talking Heads' most memorable songs.

Concert films are a unique genre. Although nothing can fully replicate the experience of attending a concert in person, a great concert film compensates by bringing viewers closer to the musicians, providing a sense of intimacy that allows us to see some of the stagecraft and the electrifying artistry. This doesn’t diminish the music; it gives depth and character to the larger-than-life stars we love.

The wackiness is deceptive, because classics like “Burning Down the House,” “Psycho Killer,” “Once in a Lifetime,” “Take Me to the River,” and many others are haunting and powerful as well as odd and strangely amusing. A self-titled show by artist Casilda Sánchez will be the next exhibit at The Gallery in Sams Fine Arts Building on the Kansas Wesleyan campus. The show will open Monday, Nov. 6, and run through Dec. 8.

Sánchez uses video, installation and photography to explore ideas of vision, voyeurism and intimacy.

“The show will contain two single-channel videos,” said Jeroen Nelemans, gallery manager and assistant professor of Graphic Design at KWU. “One will be projected large, and the other will be on a monitor. It is a very minimal show, but visually powerful.”

“Through sustained and detailed close-ups, what would have normally been overlooked becomes visible, unlocking a fleeting moment into a vast space of micronarratives,” Sánchez said.

She received an MFA in Video, Film and New Media from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a PhD in Contemporary Art from Complutense in Madrid.

The show is being curated by Jefferson Godard, a contemporary curator, gallery director, educator and architect. He currently serves as gallery manager and faculty member at Wichita State University. From 2021 to 2022, Godard was the curator at the Salina Art Center.

Admission to The Gallery is always free. The Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends by appointment.&nbsp;

Video artist is next exhibitor at KWU’s The Gallery

Award-winning author Marcia Cebulska will speak with readers at Red Fern Booksellers in downtown Salina on November 4 at 4 p.m.

Cebulska grew up in Chicago and has spent most of her career writing for the stage and screen. Her critically acclaimed plays have been produced at thousands of venues worldwide and her screenwriting aired on PBS. She has received the Jane Chambers International Award, the Dorothy Silver Award, and several Master Artist Fellowships. Her play "Now Let Me Fly," commissioned for the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board decision, was directed by Academy-Award winner Kevin Willmott.

The author will touch on all three of her recent books but will spotlight her memoir, "Lovers, Dreamers, &amp; Thieves," which centers on her early years growing up in her parents’ Polish bakery in Chicago. New York Times bestselling author Harriet Lerner says of this volume: 

“Cebulska is a brilliant, big-hearted, and luminous storyteller who can capture a world in a short vignette. I was entirely captivated by these intimate and moving family portraits that have shaped the author’s life and works. Cebulska will include brief readings from her work followed by questions and answers moderated by Harley Hamilton, owner of Red Fern Booksellers. The author will be available to sign copies of her books. The public is invited to this free event.

On October 27-29 Central High School Theatre will present the play, The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, newly adapted by Wendy Kesselman.

Ticket prices for the production are $7 for adults, $5 for students with ZERO credit service charges added to this price if using a credit card online to pre-purchase tickets. Running time is approximately 2 hours, which includes one 15-minute intermission between each act.

They are looking at a newspaper that says that the war is almost over and gives them hope that they might be able to be free soon.

The production is directed by Bill Weaver, Central High School Technical Director, who is assisted by Barbara Hilt, Central High School Theatre teacher and program director.

Alyssa is a junior and the daughter of Terri and Scott Maas. Alyssa is the Secretary for troupe 639. You may have seen her before in The Children's Hour, Anastasia, A Game, Squad Goals, Death Knocks, The Nerd or the award-winning one act Trifles. She was also the stage manager for Noises Off. She placed 3rd in the English Speaking Union's Shakespeare monologue competition in Kansas City. She hopes that you enjoy the show!

Wyatt is the son of James and Tara Angell and Samantha Angell. His past shows are The Explorers Club, Mamma Mia!, Head Over Heels, and Trifles. He also was the light board operator for The Nerd and Noises Off. Wyatt designed the lights for this production.

Anna Kraft is a sophomore and the daughter of Carmen Lucia San Martin and Robert Kraft. She has served as a crew member for Noises Off, The Explorers Club and The Nerd at Central and A Christmas Story at Theatre Salina. You may have seen her in The Children's Hour at Central last fall, Cinderella or Descendants at Theatre Salina. She is also involved in Central’s Choir!

Carson is a junior and son of Matt &amp; Leslie Ablard. This is Carson's first time taking on a role in a mainstage production. He is excited to be a part of this production. Carson also is a part of the swim team and is a sports writer for The Pylon. He was also part of the running crew for Noises Off.

Madison is a sophomore and the daughter of Pam and Dennis Berndt. She has been involved in shows and classes at Theatre Salina for over ten years. She was a dresser in The Explorers Club and A Christmas Story (Theatre Salina). She has helped with costumes for Cinderella (Theatre Salina) and loves helping the the costume shop.

Ellie is a sophomore and the daughter of Alison and John Riekhof. She has served as crew for Noises Off, The Explorers Club, and The Children's Hour. This is Ellie's first mainstage role at Central High School.

Gabriel is a sophomore and the son of Kristina and Michael Freeland. He has previously run lights for Something Rotten and was in A Christmas Story at Theatre Salina as well as running lights for The Children's Hour and running crew for Noises Off.

Jayda is a junior at Salina Central High School. This is Jayda's second role in a mainstage production. You may have seen Jayda play Mrs. Tilford in The Children's Hour last fall. Jayda has been backstage working crew for Anastasia, the spring one acts, and Peter and the Starcatcher.

Joseph Zepeda is a senior and is the son of Kimberly Trigg and Joe Zepeda. He has been in the musical “Anastasia” his Sophomore year of high school as Drunk #1. He has helped with “The Children’s Hour,” “The Explorers Club” and “The Nerd” during his junior year as tech backstage. He has been in “Mamma Mia!” as ensemble. He was an assistant stage manager for an amazing British comedy named “Noises Off.” “The Diary of Anne Frank” is his first role in a main stage play! He hopes that you enjoy this wonderful show in which all the students put in such hard work!!

Keaton has been crew for five productions. This is Keaton's first role in a mainstage production at Central High School. He is also a member of the marching band. He owns a purple trumpet.

Alyx is a sophomore and the child of Lacey Wendlandt and the grandchild of Patty and Craig Wendlandt. Alyx served on the running crew for The Children's Hour and The Explorers Club.

Zander most recently portrayed the role of Garry in Noises Off at Central High School. He is the son of Chris and Angel Flener. Zander is the Treasurer for troupe 639. Zander is a member of Free Spirit and has been in choir for seven years. This is Zander's second year in theatre at Central High School and you may have seen him in Mamma Mia! (Sky), or The Nerd (Willum).

Benjamin is the son of Robert and Susan Campbell. Ben is the President of troupe 639 and has worked on every show since the Antigone his freshman year. You may have seen him in productions such as Noises Off, The Explorers Club, One Man Two Guvnors, and Mamma Mia! Ben wants you to know that "it has been such a wonderful experience being a part of this show and I want to give a big shout-out to my fellow cast members for their wonderful performances."
