RENO COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating five suspects on multiple allegations after a drug bust in Huthinson.

On Thursday, March 5th, 2026, members of the Hutchinson Police Department Special Operations Unit, Repeat Offender Unit, and Investigations Division served a search warrant related to suspected drug distribution at 2620 East 2nd Avenue in Hutchinson, according to a media release.

 As a result of the investigation, officers seized approximately 302 grams of methamphetamine, 239 grams of marijuana, 56 grams of THC wax, 14 pills, THC cartridges, one firearm, and U.S. currency. One juvenile was placed into police protective custody.

Following completion of the investigation, five were arrested.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Travis R. Boyd, 42,&nbsp; Hutchinson, is in custody on requested charges of Distribution of Opiates x2, Distribution of Hallucinogenic, Aggravated Endangering a Child, Possession of Paraphernalia with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Opiates x2, Arrange Sale/Purchase of Controlled Substance Using a Communication Facility, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Jessica H. Ramey, 27,&nbsp; Salina, was arrested on requested charges of Possession of a Stimulant with 1 Prior Conviction, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Mark D. Benewiat, 57,&nbsp; Hutchinson, was arrested on requested charges of Distribution of Opiates, Arrange Sale/Purchase of Controlled Substance Using a Communication Facility, Possession of Opiates, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Driving While License Suspended.

Ashlynn N. Hamby Raya, 23, Great Bend, was arrested on requested charges of Distribution of Opiates, Distribution of Hallucinogenic, Sell/Distribute/Possess Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Opiates, Possession of Marijuana with 1 Prior Conviction, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

This week in Topeka was a heavy one. We were deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague, Rep. John Resman. It was a sobering reminder that while the bills we debate are important, our highest calling is simply to love one another and cherish the gift of life.

Supporting Our Military Families (HB 2767)

I voted YES to establish the Kansas Military Affairs Commission. This ensures Kansas remains a top-tier home for the armed forces and their families. Having worked for two members of Congress, I’ve seen how vital a unified state and federal effort is - it’s how we brought the "Big Red One" back to Fort Riley.

Our state is home to a massive community of heroes. As of late 2025/early 2026:

· 15,133 National Guard and Reserve Members.

· 40,000+ Military spouses and children living in our communities.

Strengthening Oversight, Not Bureaucracy (Sub for HB 2427)

I voted NO on a bill to create new "Fiscal Integrity Auditor" positions.

· The Cost: This would add $227,500 in new state spending for FY 2027.

· The Issue: I believe it’s the Legislature’s job to do the "deep dive" into the budget ourselves. We shouldn't outsource our constitutional responsibility to unelected auditors whose recommendations can simply be ignored.

I voted NO on the new gaming compact with the Wyandotte Nation. 

My vote was based on principle: I am concerned about the societal impact of gambling and believe we should focus on policies that promote genuine wealth creation for the working class.

A Bill to Watch: Protecting Kids Online (SB 372)

Next week, we start work on a bill to protect children from harmful content on mobile apps. I want to protect our kids, but I want to get the "how" right.

Rep. Steven Howe gives legislative update: Day 54 of 90

The Kansas Masonic Foundation has selected the state winners of their annual essay contest. Two of the state winners were from this area. 

Grant Rice, senior at Minneapolis Jr./Sr. High School placed fourth, and Ellie Riekhof, a senior at Salina Central High School, received an honorable mention.

The students and their parents were honored at an awards dinner at the Salina Lodge #60 on March 2nd.

Bob Shively, CAE, CFRE, the Executive Director of The Kansas Masonic Foundation, told the group, “The Essay Contest has been in existence for 60 years. The contest is open to juniors and seniors in Kansas tax-supported public high schools. Each year, the Masonic Foundation donates $12,000 to deserving high school students for their essays.”

The theme for 2025 was to write about what it means to be a Mason. The students had to interview a Mason and write about what they learned. Both students read their essays for the ceremony.

Grant Rice, son of Jamie and Dana Rice, talked about the brotherhood of Masonry. He has played basketball and baseball for four years and lettered all four years. For six years, he has been a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and served on the Leadership Team for four years. He was a member of Future Farmers of America for four years and participated in Extemporaneous Speaking contests. He played summer baseball and coached a youth summer travel baseball team. Grant plans to attend Fort Hays State University and get a degree in Applied Technology for business and industry. He was presented with a $1,000 check.

Ellie Riekhof, daughter of John and Dr. Alison Riekhof, discussed the Masons’ charitable work. She has been involved with the book club, softball, choir, and orchestra for four years. She is a soprano and has been involved with several of the Salina Center for Theatre Arts productions. At the 2025 Kansas Thespian Festival, she received an Excellent Thespys rating in the solo musical contest. Recently, she and several Central High students performed at Carnegie Hall. She plays first base and right field in softball. Ellie plans to attend St. Olaf College in Minnesota to pursue softball and choir. She was presented with a $500 check.

Lincoln Wilson, Kansas Masonic Foundation President, told the group that the essay contest is the organization’s effort to let the next generation learn about Masonry.

Last December, the Minneapolis Lodge consolidated with the Salina Lodge. One of their upcoming joint events will be sponsoring Free Cancer Screenings. They will work KU Medical Center and the Tammy Walker Center to provide these free screenings on October 10th and October 17th.

SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Friday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Kenworth Straight Truck driven by Phillip W..&nbsp;Weir, 54, White City, was westbound on Kansas 4 just east of Amos Road. The truck traveled off the roadway and the driver overcorrected. The truck&nbsp; crossed the center line, rolled onto its side through the south ditch and came to rest on its wheels.

EMS transported Weir to Salina Regional Health Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation of Logan has named 229 high school seniors from 47 Northwest Kansas schools as winners in its 51st&nbsp;annual scholarship competition.

In selecting award winners, the Scholarship Committee considered proficiency in verbal and writing skills. Other important factors are academic records, test scores, and community service in which the student may have participated.

Seven students have won Hansen Leader of Tomorrow scholarships.&nbsp; These awards are for $10,000 and may be renewable for three additional years.&nbsp; Renewal of scholarships is based upon continued regard for the principles which guided the success of the late Dane G. Hansen, a 3.00 or better GPA at the college level and a progress update describing progress towards educational goals.&nbsp;

During the event, Joe Minick of Abilene, Kansas received the Kansas Trailblazer Award&nbsp;from Lt. Governor David Toland in recognition of his extraordinary volunteer leadership and decades of service advancing heritage tourism, outdoor recreation, and historic preservation.

Minick played an instrumental role in the development of the Iron Horse Trail, Kansas’ only rails with trails project. His lifelong commitment to community service helped transform a local vision into a project with a statewide impact. In addition to the Trailblazer recognition, Minick was also honored with the 2026 Kansas Recreation and Parks Association Distinguished Volunteer Award.

Governor Laura Kelly proclaimed March 5, 2026, as Trail Appreciation Day in the State of Kansas, encouraging Kansans to recognize the importance of trails and the volunteers who help make them possible. In the proclamation, the governor recognized Minick for his exemplary volunteer service and lasting contributions to trails, recreation, and historic preservation in Kansas.

The five-mile Iron Horse Trail, which opened in fall 2025, connects the communities of Abilene and Enterprise along the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad, Kansas’ official state heritage railroad. The trail offers residents and visitors the opportunity to walk, run, or bike while enjoying the scenic beauty of Dickinson County.

Minick’s leadership and dedication helped bring the project to life, creating a new outdoor asset that supports tourism, encourages healthy lifestyles, and celebrates the region’s rail heritage.

The National Weather Service in Wichita reports that multiple rounds of thunderstorms are expected to move through Kansas today, with a higher risk of severe weather developing later this afternoon and evening.

A few storms may develop during the morning and early afternoon hours. 

These storms could produce wind gusts up to 50 mph, dime-size hail, and periods of heavy rainfall.

The main concern for Saline County arrives later today. 

Forecasters expect a second round of storms to redevelop across central Kansas during the afternoon and evening before moving southeast through the night. These storms could bring damaging winds up to 70 mph, hail as large as golf balls, heavy rainfall, and the possibility of a strong tornado.

Storms may begin impacting the area after 4 p.m. and could continue into the overnight hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather conditions throughout the day and make preparations now in case warnings are issued.

- Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, especially if storms occur overnight.

- Review your shelter plan. The safest place during a tornado is a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

- Secure outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans that could blow away in strong winds.

- Charge phones and devices so you can receive warnings and updates.

- Avoid travel during severe storms if possible.

According to the US National Weather Service, light snow will impact much of the central Kansas area Friday evening.&nbsp;Between 1-2 inches of snow is expected across central Kansas, with locally higher amounts possible.&nbsp;

Salina is in the area where it could receive 1 - 2 inches of snow. 

Use extra caution if traveling tonight as slick spots are possible, especially on elevated surfaces.

Additionally, wind chills are are expected to be in the single digits across central Kansas. 

Salina's chills could get as low as 5, with a 23 degree low temperature.

Thursday's cold front is expected to cause flurries and wintry mix for Friday across Kansas.

According to the US National Weather Service, light snow or flurries will impact central Kansas Friday night with a rain/snow mix further south. 

Snow accumulations up to a dusting are possible as well.

Furthermore, the cold front that moved across the region Thursday will lead to much cooler temperatures and even a chance for some light snow. Friday's highs will generally be in the 40s and lows in the upper teens and 20s.

Weather: Cold front expected to cause flurries and wintry mix across Kansas 

KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City man faces multiple charges in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred last month.

<a href="https://www.jacksoncountyprosecutor.com/DocumentCenter/View/2817/Parris-COMPLAINTREDACTED">Tyler J. Parris</a>, 29, is charged with 2nd Degree Murder, two counts of Armed Criminal Action, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon, according to&nbsp;Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson.

<a href="https://www.jacksoncountyprosecutor.com/DocumentCenter/View/2818/Parris-PCREDACTED">According to court records</a>, Kansas City police received a call on Feb. 16 regarding a shooting victim who was dropped off at a hospital and did not survive his injuries. The shooting occurred outside a residence near East 31st Street and Brighton Avenue.&nbsp;

Based on witness reports, Parris was in his truck, arguing with the victim, who was standing outside the truck. The two were arguing about a stolen vehicle. The defendant then allegedly fired at the victim.&nbsp;

A Jackson County judge set the defendant’s bond to $200,000 cash only.&nbsp;

Fight over stolen vehicle led to deadly KC killing

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple drug allegations.

Last month, two individuals were taken into custody by Jackson County Sheriff Deputies near 4th&nbsp;and Arizona in the City of Holton. These arrests are a part of a multi-month drug investigation into the distribution of methamphetamine into Jackson County, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Early this year, Sheriff Tim Morse initiated an investigation into potential methamphetamine sales in collaboration with the Kansas Bureau of Investigations. During this investigation, a series of undercover drug buys were made in Jackson County.

Early Thursday morning, deputies closed in on a pickup truck that had pulled into a local convenience store. The Sheriff’s Office believed that the suspects were allegedly bringing a delivery of methamphetamine to Jackson County from Topeka. &nbsp;Deputies took the occupants into custody at the scene and seized a quantity of methamphetamine.

The passenger of the vehicle, Jade Renee Graf, 33, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges that include Distribute methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a school; Taxation Drugs. No drug tax stamp for controlled substance; Possession of methamphetamine; Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body; Distribute methamphetamine; Taxation. Drugs. No drug tax stamp for controlled substance; Possession of methamphetamine; Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body;Distribute methamphetamine 3.5 – &lt;100 grams;Taxation. The driver of the vehicle, Gary Ray Hards, 26, of Denison, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of Possession of methamphetamine;&nbsp;Possession of marijuana and Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office expects additional arrests and charges in connection with this investigation.

Sheriff: Kansas couple jailed after series of undercover drug buys

DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;on Saturday joined grieving families at Dover Air Force Base at the dignified transfer for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-military-deaths-0a3f1532ec1953d51898e5b5e2b625d6">six U.S. soldiers</a>&nbsp;killed in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-veterans-military-service-dover-0a150a0cacecb8b5fc6b90cbb2c7baf1">war in the Middle East</a>.

The dignified transfer, a ritual that returns the remains of U.S. service members killed in action, is considered one of the most somber duties of any commander in chief. During his first term, Trump said bearing witness to the transfer was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/united-states-government-ae37de2f1c6b450ab60ce236c8f04450">“the toughest thing I have to do”</a>&nbsp;as president.

“It's a very sad day,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One as he returned to Florida later Saturday afternoon, saying that he was “glad we paid our respects.” He said the relatives of the deceased are “great people, great parents, wives, family” and said that the "parents were so proud.”

Both Trump and Vice President JD Vance were present for the transfer, as were their spouses. A host of top administration officials were in attendance, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who wrote in a social media post Friday of “an unbreakable spirit to honor their memory and the resolve they embodied"; Attorney General Pam Bondi, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence.

Also present for the solemn event were governors and senators from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Florida.

Those killed in action were Maj. Jeffrey O’Brien, 45, of Indianola, Iowa; Capt. Cody Khork, 35, of Winter Haven, Florida; Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert Marzan, 54, of Sacramento, California; Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor, 39, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens, 42, of Bellevue, Nebraska; and Sgt. Declan Coady, 20, of West Des Moines, lowa, who was posthumously promoted from specialist.

As is protocol, Trump — wearing a blue suit, red tie and a white USA hat — did not speak during the transfer. The president saluted as each flag-draped transfer case was carried from the military aircraft to awaiting transfer vehicles, which would take them to a mortuary facility to prepare them for their final resting place. The families were largely silent as they observed the ritual, which lasted about a half hour.

The six members of the Army Reserve, who were killed by a drone strike at a command center in Kuwait, were all from the 103rd Sustainment Command based in Des Moines, Iowa, which provides food, fuel, water and ammunition, transport equipment and supplies. They died just one day after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-explosion-tehran-c2f11247d8a66e36929266f2c557a54c">U.S. and Israel launched its military campaign</a>&nbsp;against Iran.

“These soldiers engaged in the most noble mission: protecting their fellow Americans and keeping our homeland secure,” Republican Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa, a combat veteran, said earlier this week after the six were identified. “Our nation owes them an incredible debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.”

During the ritual, transfer cases draped with the American flag and holding the remains of the fallen soldiers are carried from the military aircraft that transported them to an awaiting vehicle to take them to the mortuary facility at the base. There, the service members are prepared for their final resting place.

Amor’s husband, Joey Amor, said earlier this week that she had been scheduled to return home to him and their two children within days.

“You don’t go to Kuwait thinking something’s going to happen, and for her to be one of the first – it hurts,” Joey Amor said.

O’Brien had served in the Army Reserve for nearly 15 years, according to his LinkedIn account, and his aunt said in a post on Facebook that O’Brien “was the sweetest blue-eyed, blonde farm kid you’d ever know. He is so missed already.”

Marzan’s sister described him in a Facebook post as a “strong leader” and loving husband, father and brother.

“My baby brother, you are loved and I will hold onto all our memories and cherish them always in my heart,” Elizabeth Marzan wrote.

Coady was among the youngest people in his class, trained to troubleshoot military computer systems, but he impressed his instructors, his father, Andrew Coady, told The Associated Press.

“He trained hard, he worked hard, his physical fitness was important to him. He loved being a soldier,” Coady said. “He was also one of the most kindest people you would ever meet, and he would do anything and everything for anyone.”

Khork's family described him as “the life of the party” who was known for his “infectious spirit” and “generous heart” and who had wanted to serve in the military since childhood.

“That commitment helped shape the course of his life and reflected the deep sense of duty that was always at the core of who he was,” according to a statement from his mother, Donna Burhans, his father, James Khork, and his stepmother, Stacey Khork.

Tietjens, who came from a military family, previously served alongside his father in Kuwait. When he returned home in February 2010, he reunited with his overjoyed wife in a local church’s gym.

Tietjens’ cousin Kaylyn Golike asked for prayers, especially for Tietjens’ 12-year-old son, wife and parents, as they navigate “unimaginable loss.”
