The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) is issuing fish consumption advisories for 2026. 

The following advisories identify types of fish, or other aquatic species, that should be eaten in limited quantities or, in some cases, avoided altogether because of contamination. General advice and internet resources are provided to aid the public in making informed decisions regarding the benefits and risks associated with eating locally caught fish from Kansas waters.&nbsp;

Bottom-feeding fish:&nbsp;buffalo, carp, catfish, sturgeon and suckers

Shellfish:&nbsp;mussels, clams and crayfish

Serving size (skinless fish fillets before cooking):

There are many health benefits associated with going outside and catching and consuming fish; however, all fish contain some amount of mercury. 

Consumption of mercury-rich fish can harm the development of fetuses, nursing babies, and growing children. As a result, anyone who routinely eats fish or serves fish to children, including store-bought fish, should carefully consider the type and amount of fish eaten. Therefore, mercury-sensitive individuals (women who are pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant, and children 17 or younger)&nbsp;should follow the guidelines presented below for eating Kansas-caught fish.&nbsp;

&nbsp; White Bass, White Perch, Wiper, Striped Bass

&nbsp; Sunfish (Bluegill, Green, Redear, etc.)

&nbsp;&nbsp; 1 or 2 per week&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Saline County Jail Bookings, January 13

A Leavenworth man was arrested by Saline County deputies, after reaching speeds of over 100 mph in a stolen vehicle.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office on Monday at around 10:57 am, a deputy was on I-70 in the area of milepost 239 attempting to locate a 1997 Toyota Camry, as it was reported stolen out of Hays by the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).&nbsp;

Reportedly, the deputy located the vehicle and pursued after it eastbound on milepost 239. Other deputies and officers pursued after the vehicle as well, but the driver exited onto Hedville and continued northbound with speeds ranging from&nbsp;75-120 mph.

The driver entered into Ottawa County and went to the intersection of K-18 going eastbound. As the pursuit continued, the driver tried to pass a Nissan Versa in front, but there was oncoming traffic going westbound. The driver then re-corrected back onto the eastbound lane, sideswiping the Nissan that was in front of the suspect.

The Sheriff's Office confirmed the victim was okay.

Afterwards, the suspect continued eastbound on K-18, following K-18 north and then east into Bennington.

The suspect drove a short distance into Bennington, before returning to K-18 and heading back east on K-18. 

At the intersection of K-18 and Lincoln Street the driver lost control and struck a tree on the northeast corner of the intersection.&nbsp;

The suspect identified as Shawn Hiatt (37) of Leavenworth was arrested on the scene and transported to Salina Regional Health Center by Ottawa County EMS.

Upon his release, Hiatt was booked into the Saline County Jail for the requested charges of:

 No Drivers License, Felony Flee and Elude, Possession of Stolen Property Aggravated Battery and a Warrant out of Leavenworth County for Domestic Battery.

This incident is under investigation and additional charges may be requested, according to the Saline County Sheriff's Office.&nbsp;

Salina Central releases lengthy list of students earning Honor Roll for 2025-2026 Fall semester

The Salina Family YMCA is driven by a community that believes in giving back. 

Each day, individuals come together at the Y not only to stay active and connected, but to support one another in meaningful ways. This shared commitment to caring for neighbors is what allows the YMCA to remain a safe, welcoming place for all who walk through its doors.

That spirit of generosity was recently reflected through a thoughtful donation of equipment to the Aquatics Department, worth $3,000.

 This gift included new training equipment, backboards, infant mannequins, fanny packs, noodles, pocket masks, and more for YMCA lifeguards. 

These tools directly support water safety efforts and help ensure a secure environment for members and guests in the pools.

New seats were filled and an end of term were recognized on Monday's Salina Commission meeting.

The light agenda meeting was comprised mostly of recognizing Doug Rempp as new-elect Salina Commissioner, Greg Lenkiewicz ending his 1-year Mayoral term, Mike Hoppock becoming the Mayor as Jerry Ivey fills the Vice Mayor position and former Commissioner Bill Longbine officially ending his term.

With Doug Rempp officially being sworn in as a Salina Commissioner, he commented that he looks forward to making decisions as it is "fuel" for him by keeping his mind occupied.

He mentioned wanting to work on several subject matters such as the <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/3728e38f-efb9-4da3-bafe-71ef2de9b5bb">Cozy Inn appeal</a>, fiscal responsibility, mill levy and the animal shelter during his two-year term.

"I know this train has left the station, but I would like to do anything I can to put a stop to the Cozy craziness and we will see if anything can be done with that," he said. "Fiscal responsibility is a big thing for me, while our mill levy is in good shape I still would like to find ways to reduce what I feel is wasteful spending. I also would like to take an active role, as I am taking the animal shelter under my umbrella. I have had so many people come up and talk to me about the animal shelter, and hearing them speak about a desire to make it better for the pets."

Rempp also added the vision he would like to see Salina be in during his tenure.

"We are absolutely headed in a great direction. Sometimes I feel maybe we can tap the brakes a little bit, and be extremely cautious of entering into new starbonds or move forward with high-ticket items within the community."

He plans on making a commitment to the 1st meeting of every month during the winter, as he stays in Arizona during the winter season. Starting March 2026, Rempp will consistently be at the Commission meetings.

"My permanent home is here and while I have been out of state these couple of months, I am talking to people, emailing, texting all the time. There has not been any lack of communication. I have had days where I might spend an hour or more on the phone talking with people. I am available and I will be for the people of the community."

Mike Hoppock officially became Salina's Mayor for the <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/85ff1b8a-ef23-4e4d-b4b7-b157c8031fe0">third time</a> on Monday.&nbsp;

He commented on several items he wanted the community to know where Salina stands financially.

Hoppock added Salina continues to see "strong economic development and growth."

He mentioned Kubota completing expansions of its existing property, as they are expected to begin construction for new testing facility, projecting up to 300 jobs by 2030.

Other economic developments he included were:

- K-AIRES, expected to hire up to 100 people once opened.

- <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/ae2f27d8-44be-435e-b99f-1122368d3453">SkyWest three-year lease agreement with Salina Regional Airport for maintenance facility.</a>

- <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/dceab434-5a0f-431a-8951-c8413870c905">Downtown Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funding for shade structures at City Lights Stage.</a>

-&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/f333c071-4015-4130-96a5-fa21387d6d1c">Chances of discussing new hotel and parking lot to be built in downtown</a>.

Hoppock also&nbsp;commented on property taxes where Salina and Saline County stand, comparing to other cities and counties across the state.

He stated at the end of the 2025 year, Saline County was ranked 90 out of the 105 counties in Kansas for total mill levy.&nbsp;This means there are only 15 counties in the state of Kansas that have a lower mill levy than Saline County.

“This speaks well not only for this Commission, but for the County Commission, school board and the Airport Authority that they have done what they can to keep the mill levy where it is," he said.

He then compared Salina’s mill levy with other cities such as, McPherson, Hays, Dodge City, Garden City, Hutchinson, Great Bend, Emporia, Junction City, Topeka, Manhattan and Lawrence. Hoppock stated out the 12 cities, Salina has the 2nd lowest mill levy rate.&nbsp;

In 2023, Salina’s mill levy was 30.348 and in 2026 it is 28.568.

City of Salina remains under the Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR), which is the property tax rate (mill levy) that generates the exact same amount of property tax revenue, in dollars, as the previous year. Hoppock stated the City has not asked for an increase in revenue or the amount of property tax being collected since 2024.

“I am excited and Salina continues to be a model of public/private partnerships. I think we have alot ahead of us and we continue to be a beacon for other communities in the state of Kansas. If you go around to the other communities, alot of them ask how do you get done what you do in Salina? It is the people, Commission and staff that make this happen."

Hoppock has served as Mayor in 2020 and 2023.

Former Mayor, Greg Lenkiewicz officially ended his Mayoral term on Monday.&nbsp;

During the meeting, he gave comments on the accomplishments and the direction he feels the city is headed.

"We made the right decisions as we focused on improving public safety, parks and rec, infrastructure projects and the hiring of our City Manager," he said. "I feel like we have really gotten alot done and we are moving in the right direction, as we are&nbsp;making this a better place to live. There is alot to be proud of and it has been an honor to serve as Mayor.”

Lenkiewicz will continue to serve Salina as a City Commissioner.

Longbine gave a speech during the meeting, as he felt a "sense of pride" serving as Commissioner.

"I can step away with a great deal of pride after serving this community."

He commented on successfully accomplishing, along with his former fellow commissioners on improving public safety, such as adding fire trucks and an <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/4cd79780-8024-4fb2-a06d-d9a90312f3b2">upcoming new fire station for the Salina Fire Department.</a>

He added he loved seeing a project that would meet the needs of the community get completed, as he enjoyed his work and engaging with members of the public.

"One of the most rewarding parts in serving this commission, was being part of a process from beginning to end," Longbine said.

He thanked his wife, Donna, Commissioners, City Staff and the people of Salina for his tenure as Commissioner and former Mayor (from January 2024 - January 2025).

Longbine plans to stay in the community and hopes the new Commission will thrive, as well as looking forward to seeing the growth of Salina.

Rempp sworn in, Hoppock becomes Mayor, Lenkiewicz and Longbine recognized at City Commission meeting

The Salina Police Department (SPD) and Fire Medics responded to the report of a 5-month old male infant who was reportedly, unresponsive.

According to SPD on Monday morning at around 7:42 am, authorities and first responders were dispatched to a single-family residence in central Salina for a medical call involving an unknown disturbance.

Reportedly, officers and medics arrived and contacted the occupants of that home. Just prior to the call, one of those occupants had discovered their 5-month-old male unresponsive in their crib. 

Both adult occupants of the home were interviewed by Salina Police Detectives. 

Adyson Burr, (21) and resident of that address, has been arrested and with a requested charge of 1st Degree Homicide and 1 requested charge of Child Abuse. 

The case is still under investigation including an autopsy to be performed in Kansas City later this week.

SPD stated the other occupant of the home is not a suspect.

This revitalization is meant to deliver greater value for Kansas families, save toward education rather than fees and give account owners a more user-friendly account management experience.&nbsp;

According to the Treasurer's office, Steven Johnson selected&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tiaa.org/public/invest/financial-products/529-college-savings">TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing, Inc. (TFI)</a> as the new plan manager for the<a href="https://www.learningquest.com/home/learn/benefits-features/plan-flexibility.html#:~:text=The%20Learning%20Quest%20Education%20Savings,Qualifying%20room%20and%20board%20costs"> Learning Quest 529 Education Savings Program.</a>

“For more than 25 years, this program has helped Kansas families plan for the future,” said Johnson. “We took a measured approach and studied what works in other states to build best-in-class 529 plans for Kansas.”

The TFI plan manager from TIAA serves states such as California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Washington and Wisconsin.

Under new program management, the Kansas 529 plans will be positioned as one of the lowest-cost 529 plans in the market. 

Kansas 529 account owners will experience a significant fee reduction that will collectively save millions of dollars, keeping more of their contributions working for future education expenses.

Plan management will transition after the close of business on February 27, 2026, with the conversion completed and the new platform fully live on March 2, 2026.

The transition also brings streamlined investment options, including a shift to enrollment-year portfolios that better align savings with a student’s expected education timeline.

“Our responsibility is to be good stewards of this program,” Johnson said. “This transition carries that commitment forward. It empowers families by reducing costs and complexity, while strengthening the program for the long term.

Account holders will receive detailed transition communications and guidance starting January 20 ahead of the March 2026 conversion.

What is the Learning Quest 529 Education Savings Program?

The Learning Quest 529 Education Savings Program helps&nbsp;Kansas families save for their loved ones in tax-advantaged 529 savings accounts. This program helps individuals pay for qualified educational and career advancement expenses. Funds can grow and be withdrawn for educational purposes tax free, if used toward qualified expenses.

Additionally, Kansas taxpayers may take an annual deduction of up to $3,000 ($6,000 for married, filing jointly) from Kansas adjusted gross income for contributions into each beneficiary's account.

This program is administered by the Kansas State Treasurer,&nbsp;who is responsible for the regulations governing the program, selecting the financial organization that manages the accounts, ensuring the program complies with all relevant IRS guidelines and monitoring investment performance with the assistance of an outside consultant and an advisory committee.&nbsp;

A chance of light rain Friday afternoon is expected to gradually transition into light snow towards the evening.

According to the US National Weather Service, a chance of rain is expected after 1:00 pm with a 50% chance to mix with snow after 4:00 pm.

Portions of central and south-central Kansas could see light snow accumulations up to 1 inch, and slick spots on bridges and overpasses are possible tonight.&nbsp;

A little after 7:00 pm, the mix will likely become all snow.

Higher accumulations are expected across southwest Kansas.

According to the US National Weather Service, moderate to heavy snow has quickly come to an end, and only pockets of light snow are expected over the next couple of hours throughout the region. 

Even with road conditions improving quickly, continue to exercise caution as roads could be slick through tonight.

Areas of snow will remain through the late afternoon for locations generally along and just southeast of the Kansas Turnpike with little if any accumulation anticipated.

  Some locations may see visibility reduced to less than 3 miles at times.  There maybe a few slick spots on bridges and overpasses.

Salina is under a wind advisory until 6:00 pm Sunday.

The Emergency&nbsp;Accident Reporting Plan the Salina Police Department issued earlier on Sunday has been cancelled as well.

Monday's weather in Salina is expected to have a morning wind chill in the single digits to around zero. Afternoon highs are forecasted to be in the low 30s.

UPDATE: Heavy snow ends in Salina, pockets of light snow expected throughout central Kansas

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Director and Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield turned himself to authorities on Tuesday to face child sex abuse charges in New Mexico stemming from allegations that he inappropriately touched a minor on the set of a TV series he was directing.

His apprehension comes after authorities in Albuquerque&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/timothy-busfield-child-sex-abuse-charge-83c82a8c5dbfabd4880f3c8af02fb523">issued a warrant for his arrest</a>&nbsp;on Friday on two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse. A criminal complaint alleges the acts occurred on the set of the series “The Cleaning Lady,” which was filmed in Albuquerque.

Busfield, who is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-celebrity-9ba7c27a8ae04a3993864eea8508f2f3">married to actor Melissa Gilbert</a>, is known for appearances in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams” and “Thirtysomething,” the latter of which won him an Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series in 1991.

Busfield was being booked by Albuquerque police on the charges, said Gilbert Gallegos, spokesperson for the city police department.

Busfield denied the allegations last fall when interviewed by authorities as part of an investigation, the complaint said.
