On Friday, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for the protection of human life, stopped by Salina during their inaugural traveling memorial/tour, "AFTERMATH."

<a href="https://kfl.org/">Kansans for Life</a> launched AFTERMATH, a traveling memorial created in response to the 2019 Hodes &amp; Nauser v. Schmidt decision.

In 2015, the <a href="https://kscourts.gov/Newsroom/News-Releases/News/2019-News-Releases/April-2019/Supreme-Court-announces-decision-in-Hodes-Nauser?utm_source=chatgpt.com">KS Legislature</a> enacted Senate Bill 95, which&nbsp;banned the use of the <a href="https://healthy.kaiserpermanente.org/health-wellness/health-encyclopedia/he.dilation-and-evacuation-d-e.tw2462#:~:text=Dilation%20and%20evacuation%20(D&amp;E)%20is,hospital%20for%20a%20few%20hours.">dilation &amp; evacuation (D &amp; E)</a> abortion procedure (a common second‑trimester method). A lawsuit was filed against the state in 2019 to argue that the KS Constitution "protects a woman's right to an abortion" and the bill "violates that right," because it prevents physicians from using the safest procedure for most second-trimester abortions.

The decision made, was the Kansas Constitution protects a woman's right to abortion and that it was substantially likely Senate Bill 95 violated that right.

According to annual reports from the <a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/DocumentCenter/View/29328/KS-Abortions-2022-PDF">Kansas Department of Health and Environment</a>, abortions in Kansas have increased since then:

Kansans for Life Director of Communications, Mackenzie Ayers stated the whole point of the tour is to "present the facts."

"The reason we are doing this, is to present the facts and show what is happening here in Kansas," Ayers said. "Alot of people are unaware that this is happening, and AFTERMATH helps shed light on an often hidden reality."

Ayers added, while everyone may not share their perspective, they will always do whatever it takes to support women.

"Someone may not agree, they may not be pro-life, but we support women and women deserve full information before an abortion is performed on her," she said. "We want to change hearts and minds, because we believe that we are in a cultural battle."

The tour invites and encourages people to have a respectful conversation, concerning the topic of abortion.

Becky Norlin, Co-Founder of <a href="https://www.centralkansasactivists.org/">Central Kansas Activists</a>,&nbsp;attended the event along with others to protest on the parking lot of Jerry Ivey Park. She gave her comments on where she stands with abortion.

"Every woman should have a choice and there is no right or wrong that we can decide for anybody else," she said.&nbsp;

Norlin added that teaching about sex-education in schools is important for people to prevent abortions.

"Who would not want less abortions? No woman wants to make that decision. That is a very cruel and hard decision, and so women should be supported through that," she said. "If we can lessen abortions through education, ensuring child care is provided, housing stability, food and being secure for these children, that is pro-life."

<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li_2024/b2023_24/members/rep_sanders_clarke_1/">Representative for the 69th District, Clark Sanders</a> made an appearance at the event to support Kansans for Life. Sanders said he is very active in pro-life legislation in Topeka and is advocating for direct election of Kansas Supreme Court Justices.

"There is a big initiative to change the way we choose the members of the Supreme Court (Kansas)," Sanders said. "I am advocating for direct election of Supreme Court Justices. We need to get our Supreme Court changed in Kansas and the only we can do that, is to figure out a new way to get Justices on the Supreme Court. That will be good for alot of things, not the least of which would be for pro-life causes."

The AFTERMATH tour will continue their traveling memorial on October 10 in Chanute. Afterwards, they will head to Basehor on October 18 and end in Ark City, October 25.

Nonprofit advocating for protecting human life stops by Salina during inaugural traveling memorial 

A male suspect was arrested after breaking into a home and was shortly located by a robotic device, used by law enforcement.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Tuesday at around 6:00 am, a resident in the 500 block of Jupiter called police when they heard glass breaking at their neighbor's home. Subsequently, the owner reported their home had been broken into. The homeowner was not sure of the suspect's whereabouts and exited the house.

Afterwards, officers were dispatched to the house and deployed a robot to locate the suspect. Through the camera on the robot, officers found the suspect in the basement and sleeping on a couch. The suspect was then arrested.

The suspect identified was 33-year old, Julius Eagle Feather-Johnson. Eagle Feather-Johnson was taken to Salina Regional Health Center to be evaluated, before he was booked into the Saline County Jail for the following requested charges:

Battery of Law Enforcement Officer, Interference with Law Enforcement Officer, Criminal Trespass and Criminal Damage to Property.

SPD added Eagle Feather-Johnson, seemed to be 'very intoxicated' during the arrest.

I’m Doug Rempp, I have filed for one of the 3 City Commissioner seats in the Nov 4th Election. Many of you will know me as Mr. McDonalds or the McDonald’s guy. I had the Franchise in Salina from late 1995 till 2017. I have had a residence in Salina for almost 30 years. Upon retirement my wife of 43 years, JoAnne and I spent a few months in the winter in AZ. I’m not a big fan of cold weather. We did make AZ our primary home for a couple years but a family need brought us back to Salina in 2022. We have a son and daughter that both live in Salina and grandkids that attend school in Salina.&nbsp;

During my years in Business I have dealt with the City a lot. Some good to deal with, others not so much. Probably one of the more memorable visits from the City happened about a decade ago. The 4th of July was on a Saturday I think. I purchased a hundred 18” American flags and put 1 every 10 feet around the Crawford and Ohio McD’s. Within 2 hours I had a City Official visit telling me we needed to remove the flags. They were considered an “Attention getting device.”

I have always listened to my employees and my customers. I have never shied away from work and never felt&nbsp; a job or task beneath me. I have made many financial decisions over a million dollars many times. Decisions that I had to live with and pay for. The business payroll was a ¼ million dollars every other week. I’m not sure how many of our current commissioners have had to sweat making payroll or go without pay as business expenses come 1st. The way they spend taxpayer money can be irritating.&nbsp;

The Cozy Inn was the deciding factor for me to put my name on the Ballot. Seems to me that just 1 of the Commissioners could have gotten personally involved in this and found a solution. I have seen the current Commissioners develop and approve a variance to code at their normal meetings. The Cozy is a 103 year old Business in our Community. I think it would have been very easy to carve out a variance to code. Instead, we probably will spend a million dollars fighting them and get negative attention across the state and beyond.

A lot of great things have happened in Salina over the last 30 years. I am not against growth. Just the opposite. It’s just my thought that the taxpayers of the City should not have to subsidize new businesses. For example the Mall as it relates to a 146 million perhaps subsidy to redo the Mall. I don’t think that is fair to other retailers in town. Especially those on the South end. A business could be “Poached” from Mid States Plaza to a new space at the Mall. Same with Restaurants. If an existing Restaurant loses just 10% of their sales, they may lose 30-40% of their profits.&nbsp;

I’m not opposed to the great things that have happened downtown. I’m not opposed to a new parking garage and Hotel. In this case, the bulk of the business could come from another hotel they own just a couple hundred yards away.&nbsp;

The need that brought us back to Salina has sadly passed. Salina will be our primary home for the foreseeable future. My wife and I did buy a Townhome in Az earlier this year. We do plan on using it for a few months over the winter. I have committed to traveling back for a meeting a&nbsp;month minimum when we are away for a few months. Less than ideal but doable. A commissioner was zooming in at the last meeting I attended. 

I think what I bring to the commission offsets me having to Zoom a few meetings annually. Your call Salina, just please be sure to vote come Nov 4th.

Air force base turns into cutting-edge aviation, technology institute

The grounds of K-State Salina opened for operation in 1942 during the height of World War II, originally built as the Smoky Hill Army Airfield for processing and a staging area of equipment before transitioning to what was known as&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.strategic-air-command.com/bases/Schilling_AFB.htm">Schilling Air Force Base</a>&nbsp;in the 1950s.

Nearly 25 years after the base opened, it was deactivated in the mid 1960s. The land and much of the infrastructure&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.salinaairport.com/public-information/history.aspx">has shifted for use by the Salina Regional Airport</a>&nbsp;and educational facilities.

In 1965, Schilling Institute was established on the same grounds as the former air force base. The school quickly established itself as a leading post-secondary institution for aviation and technology programs, as well as the state’s only technical institute offering two-year programs of science and engineering technology.

The college offered degrees in mechanical engineering technology, electronics engineering technology, civil engineering technology and aeronautical technology. In 1967, the campus established its computer science technology department, representing the first computer science degree to be offered by any college or university in the state of Kansas.

By 1969, the campus was renamed to the Kansas Technology Institute, still retaining its heavy focus for developing aviation and technology-related associate degrees, and in 1986, began offering the renowned professional pilot bachelor’s degree, a degree that is offered to this date at K-State Salina.

In 1988, the campus was renamed to Kansas College of Technology.

In 1991, in a landmark decision, the campus community voted to merge into Kansas State University's structure. At that time, the campus was known for its expertise in emerging technologies and a successful aviation program.

Since then, K-State Salina has continued to grow in its reputation for dedication to innovation. It was the first in Kansas to offer a computer science program, established one of the nation’s premier professional pilot programs and later made history supporting&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/virgin-atlantic-global-flyer/nasm_A20070018000">the Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer mission</a>&nbsp;in 2005. With the launch of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/degree-options/uas-flight/">Uncrewed Aircraft Systems program</a>&nbsp;in 2008, the campus positioned itself as a national leader in drone education, research and application, offering one of the first bachelor’s degrees of its kind in the nation.

More recently, the campus has partnered with Hollywood entertainment company, Pure Imagination t<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/news/newsreleases/2023-08/K-State-Salina-Pure-Imagination-Studios-partnership82323.html">o create a unique industry-academic model that goes beyond collaboration</a>. K-State Salina looks back in history and celebrates 60 years of education with event on Thursday

SALINE COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 3p.m. Tuesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Subaru Ascent driven by Gina M.&nbsp; Rosenwald, 51, Overland Park, and a 2021 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Kylie N.&nbsp;Buntin, 28, Bennington, were&nbsp;approaching the intersection of 8th and Antrim Avenue, an uncontrolled intersection, in north Salina.

Rosenwald failed to yield the right of way to the Trailblazer.&nbsp; Both vehicles collided in the intersection. After impact the Trailblazer came to rest on its top.

&nbsp;EMS transported Rosenwald and Buntin to Salina Regional Health Center. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

I am running for Salina City Commission because, like so many of the people I have had the pleasure of speaking with have said to me: The citizens (as a whole) as I am, are tired of what appears to be wasteful spending, lack of transparency and the citizens’ voices not being heard. Many in our community feel that the current&nbsp; commissioners listen more to the city department heads instead of the citizens that&nbsp; elected them.&nbsp;

I was born, raised and educated in Kansas and I am a fourth generation Kansan. After graduating from high school in 1978, I enlisted in the military. I served 25 years in total in the Army, Army Reserve and Air National Guard, with just over 20 years of active service. I served in Germany, Denmark, Korea, Saudi Arabia and numerous stateside assignments. I retired from Smoky Hill ANG range serving as the Assistant Operations and the Flight Scheduler. The many additional duties that I had were Airspace manager, Trainer and Mobilization Sergeant for the Range. I retired in January 2005 and I received a second Meritorious Service Medal.&nbsp;

After retiring from the military, I worked for KDOT as an equipment operator for a short time&nbsp; before going to work for the Railroad as a rail car repairer and worked as a outbound air test and train inspector at Herington, KS. 

I decided to return to formal education the fall of 2006 and quit the railroad, working as a welder/fabricator while attending college full time. I received my BS in Management and Ethics from Manhattan Christian College July 2008.&nbsp; After finishing college, I worked at Fort Riley at the airfield as an airfield operations&nbsp; specialist. Then I worked at the Fort Riley railhead teaching rail loading and aircraft pallet&nbsp; loading to soldiers and DOD civilians until I returned to railroading. This time, I worked as a&nbsp; conductor and engineer until 2014 when an injury ended my railroading career.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After recovering from my injury, I visited Salina Area Technical College to see about taking&nbsp; classes and was asked to apply for a Welding Instructor position for the night welding&nbsp; program. I was hired and started work for SATC and worked for three years until the night&nbsp; welding program was terminated. I then went to work for a private railcar repair facility in&nbsp; the Inbound Inspector and job estimator department. While in that position I worked with&nbsp; the Quality Assurance manager and customer service manager. I missed teaching and&nbsp; found a position with Hutchinson Community College and worked for HCC from Aug 2017&nbsp; until my retirement in 2022. While working in that position, I put together a welding&nbsp; program at the Hillsboro, KS facility that took it from 12 students&nbsp;from three separate area high schools to 25 students a day from six different area high schools.&nbsp;

In those five years I&nbsp; worked with the local industries to ensure that our curriculum was not only in line with&nbsp; state requirements but also met the American Welding Society universal standards. 

During&nbsp;my five years at HCC, I sent teams to NCK welding competition four times, winning first,&nbsp; second and third place team finishes. I worked with our grant writers to get grants for our&nbsp; program to purchase the latest equipment that industry used in manufacturing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I retired from working full time in July 2022 and shortly afterward started working with&nbsp; assisting local veterans with VA assistance. As a result of that work, we have started the&nbsp; Salina Area Veterans Assistance Group and to date have helped over 100 local veterans&nbsp; and families of veterans receive some type of assistance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I am married to the former Sally S. Lai of Hong Kong, and we have three children and 10&nbsp; grandchildren between us.&nbsp;

I am a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Gun Owners&nbsp; of America.&nbsp;

I enjoy spending time with family, fishing and traveling around our country seeing the&nbsp; greatness of Kansas and the United States.&nbsp;

If I am elected, I will work hard to make sure that our city government is transparent&nbsp; and accountable to our citizens. I will work with our city manager to ensure that all city departments will do all that they can to work with small business owners. I will&nbsp; not forget that as a commissioner I work for the citizens, and the city manager works for city commission.&nbsp;

DICKINSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Chevy Impala driven by Jerry Ray May, 88, from Colorado, was exiting Interstate 70 eastbound on the north side of Chapman. The driver&nbsp;failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign.&nbsp; A 2000 Peterbilt semi driven by Collin Wiliam Gfeller, 20, Chapman struck the Chevy on the driver side.

EMS transported May to Wesley Medical Center.&nbsp; A passenger in the Impala and Gfeller were not transported for treatment. Gfeller was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

CHAPMAN - The Kansas Highway Patrol has announced a major injury crash that occurred at the Chapman interchange area.

According to&nbsp;Trooper Tod KHP Hays, the crash happened on Rain road into Chapman. the road will be shut down for unknown amount of time for law enforcement to work the crash site.

KHP advises those needing to travel towards Chapman from I-70, exit&nbsp;at Junction city and take Old Highway 40, or exit and take milepost 281 and go down to Old Highway 40.

Driver airlifted to hospital after car, semi crash

The Saline County Treasurer’s Office has announced the installation of a new secure payment dropbox, located on the south circle drive near the main entrance of the City/County Office Building.

The dropbox offers residents a convenient, 24-hour option for submitting tax payments as well as vehicle tag renewals without having to come inside the building or wait in line.&nbsp;

“This is a simple way to make doing business with our offices more convenient,” said Anthony Newell, Saline County Treasurer. “Residents can now drop off their payments at any time of day, including after regular office hours.”&nbsp;

Payments placed in the dropbox will be collected daily by the Treasurer’s Office staff. Residents are asked to include all necessary documentation to ensure prompt processing.&nbsp;

Saline County Treasurer’s Office installs new payment dropbox for public convenience

The Walk to End Alzheimer's by the <a href="https://act.alz.org/site/TR?sid=23932&amp;type=fr_informational&amp;pg=informational&amp;fr_id=18607">Alzheimer's Association&nbsp;</a>, will hold its annual walk in Salina to raise funds for care, support and research for people facing the horrific disease.

On Saturday, October 12 at JRI Stadium (at the campus of Kansas Wesleyan)&nbsp;participants will&nbsp;meet for the walk. The venue will open at 2:00 pm and a ceremony will occur at 2:45 pm, followed by the walk.

The ceremony will consist of honoring and remembering those who have died from the disease.

There is a registration fee for the walk and donations are highly encouraged. Every registered participant who achieves the fundraising minimum of $100, will receive an official Walk to End Alzheimer's T-shirt.

Chair for the Walk to End Alzheimer's, Amanda Randolph said this is the biggest fundraiser and support group for those that have Alzheimer's or other forms of cognitive impairment.

She added that over 7 million Americans are diagnosed with the disease, 1 in 3 older adults pass away with Alzheimer's or Dementia and nearly 12 million US citizens provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer's or other forms of Dementia.

"There are some people with the disease living very secluded, because they do not want to talk about," Randolph said. "It is so important that we talk about it and say to others who have it, that this is not your death sentence. We have to help these people, so they are not alone."

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61573736471612#">Central Kansas Death Care Collective</a> (CKDCC) will be hosting their second Death Storytelling hour here at Red Fern Booksellers. Three mothers will share their personal stories of losing a child.

The event will occur on Wednesday, October 8, 6:00 pm at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S. Santa Fe Ave).

CKDCC holds events dedicated for others to talk about the reality of death and the struggles people may face with it.

The CKDCC is a collective of practitioners and caring individuals interested in the field of dying and death care in community. 

Their goal is to empower individuals and their families by promoting a holistic and community-centered approach to end-of-life care. They connect people to resources and information, provide educational opportunities and programs, assist with planning and information about alternative choices available, provide referrals to service providers and respond as needs arise in the community.&nbsp;

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS) the severity remains low for these scattered showers and storms throughout the region on Tuesday. However, heavy rainfall amounts and flooding are a possibility.&nbsp;

Flooding remains possible with Tuesday morning's showers 

The US National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita forecasts severe thunderstorms are expected to develop after midnight tonight and continue into Tuesday morning across Central Kansas.

According to NWS Wichita, these storms are likely to produce high rainfall rates, which may lead to flooding. Storms are expected to move in from the west after midnights, with most locations in Saline County after 3:00 am. The heaviest rainfall is likely between 4:00 am and noon Tuesday.

Saline County Emergency Management stated there is slightly lower confidence on how large hailstones may get, but the confidence is in the heavy rainfall and flooding potential has been increasing.

BOSTON (AP) — Joan B. Kennedy, the former wife of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy who endured a long and troubled marriage marked by family tragedies, her husband’s infidelities and her own struggles with alcoholism and mental health, died on Wednesday. She was 89.

The former Joan Bennett was a model and classically-trained pianist when she married Ted Kennedy in 1958. Their lives would change unimaginably over the next decade and a half. Brother-in-law John F. Kennedy was elected president in 1960 and assassinated three years later. Brother-in-law Robert F. Kennedy served as attorney general under JFK, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1964 and assassinated while seeking the presidency.

Her husband was elected to the U.S. Senate and became among the country’s most respected legislators despite initial misgivings that he was capitalizing on his family connections. But Ted Kennedy also lived through scandals of his own making. In 1969, the car he was driving plunged off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, killing his young female passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne.

Kennedy, who swam to safety and waited hours before alerting police, later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident. Chappaquiddick shadowed him for the rest of his life, weighing against his own chances for the presidency.

Joan Kennedy had three children with her husband, but also had miscarriages, including one shortly after the Chappaquiddick accident. She stood by her husband through the scandal, but their estrangement was nearly impossible to hide by the time of his unsuccessful effort to defeat President Jimmy Carter in the 1980 Democratic primaries. They had been separated by then, and would later divorce. One bumper sticker from the campaign read “Vote for Jimmy Carter, Free Joan Kennedy.”

Her love of piano would be a trademark for much of her life. She was known for opening her husband's campaign rallies with a piano serenade and, after they divorced, touring with orchestras around the world. Her family said she would combine her masterful playing with a message about the transformational potential of the arts and the need for equitable arts education.

In a 1992 Associated Press interview, she recalled playing piano for brother-in-law Bobby when he ran for president in 1968. “He took me with him and encouraged me,” she said. “He had a theme, ‘This Land Is Your Land,’ the Woody Guthrie song. I’d play that on the piano and everybody would come in, feeling really great about everything."

“It seems like a long time ago, but it’s part of my memories,” she said softly.

In a statement, former Rep. Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island praised his mother for her courage and talent.

“Besides being a loving mother, talented musician, and instrumental partner to my father as he launched his successful political career, Mom was a power of example to millions of people with mental health conditions,” his statement said. “She will be missed not just by the entire Kennedy Family, but by the arts community in the City of Boston and the many people whose lives that she touched.”

She also became one of the first women to publicly acknowledge her struggles with alcoholism and depression.

“I will always admire my mother for the way that she faced up to her challenges with grace, courage, humility, and honesty,” Ted Kennedy Jr. said in a statement. “She taught me how to be more truthful with myself and how careful listening is a more powerful communication skill than public speaking.”

Rep. Sharice Davids seeks extension of health tax credit used by 160K Kansans

TOPEKA — U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall diagnosed the ongoing shutdown of the federal government as a malignancy infecting Democratic lawmakers.

The Kansas Republican, who was a physician in an obstetrics practice before elected to Congress, said Democrats at the Capitol were infected with “Trump derangement syndrome.”

“They have a hatred for President Trump that I’ve never seen,” Marshall said on a speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

Marshall, who was among lawmakers skeptical of President Joe Biden’s victory over Trump in 2020, said an underlying issue was Democrats had yet to accept outcome of 2024 elections that placed Republicans in control of the House, Senate and White House.

“If you want to continue your liberal socialist policies, Democrats, win an election,” Marshall said.

He accused Democrats of using the shutdown that began Oct. 1 to play hypocritical games with U.S. health care policy. The most “failed system” and “biggest waste of money” is the Medicaid system that has enrolled about 400,000 Kansans, he said. The senator said Democrats were complicit in creating financial challenges that threaten rural hospitals in Kansas and other states.

The six-person Kansas congressional delegation — five Republicans, one Democrat — have shared views on the weeklong shutdown tied to failure to pass a short-term funding bill to finance government operations. Democrats conditioned support for a bill on extension of health subsidies that lowered the consumer cost of Affordable Care Act plans. Republicans say the shutdown must end before working on the tax credits for health insurance.

The House adopted a temporary funding bill, but the Senate hasn’t voted for a comparable bill allowing the government to function until Nov. 21.

“This is not a shutdown that makes any sense at all,” said U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas. “The American people — Kansans — deserve something different from the U.S. Senate. Every city council or commission, every school board, every local government office in my state passes a budget and then lives within that budget every year. Every local unit of government can figure this out, and the U.S. Senate is failing one more time.”

Moran, who has voted with Marshall to break the Senate’s deadlock, said the federal government shutdown “means uncertainty. A shutdown means dysfunction.”

U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, the lone Democrat in the delegation, said Democrats in Congress were fighting to extend availability of ACA tax credits to keep health care affordable. More than 160,000 Kansans relied last year on tax credits the 3rd District representative said should be made permanent.

“Because congressional Republicans have refused to extend them, premiums could rise by $700 next year, putting thousands of Kansans at risk of paying more or losing coverage,” Davids said.

She said the shutdown would harm hardworking Kansans and the moment called for Republicans and Democrats to work together on a solution.

U.S. Rep. Derek Schmidt, a Republican serving the 2nd District in eastern Kansas, said the Senate ought to get behind the House-passed bipartisan bill. The approach would get the wheels of government moving and create time for the House and Senate to work on full-year appropriations bills, he said.

“Regrettably,” Schmidt said, “Senate Democrats are insisting on the inclusion of a $1.5 trillion wish list of additional reckless spending instead of passing the House’s continuing resolution. This shutdown is entirely the result of those unreasonable demands.”

U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann, a Republican in the mostly rural 1st District, said the shutdown was triggered by Democrats who wanted taxpayers to “pay for health care for illegal immigrants and authorize trillions of new dollars in federal spending.”

He complained Democrats would rather see Trump fail than work in a bipartisan manner to operate government.

“I understand that some in Washington prefer to grandstand and try to score political points rather than do what’s best for the country, but it is time to stop the political theater and work together to get our fiscal house in order,” Mann said.

U.S. Rep. Ron Estes, the 4th District congressman serving the Wichita area, said he had his congressional pay withheld due to the shutdown. He blamed U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, and his allies for the impasse.

“Republicans have done our job,” Estes said. “I hope my Democrat colleagues will put Americans first and end this shutdown soon.”

U.S. Senator Marshall points to ‘Trump derangement syndrome’ as culprit in shutdown

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement on Tuesday released the name of the suspect in the homicide investigation involving a missing Kansas woman.

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;– This is an update to the September 28th media release regarding the homicide investigation of 43-year-old Rachel Johnson of Wichita.

The suspect in this case has been identified as 39-year-old Brentton Walker of Wichita, according to a statement from Wichita Police.

&nbsp;Walker was located with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased on the scene. Preliminary investigation revealed that Walker and Rachel Johnson had a prior dating relationship.&nbsp;

On Sept. 28, investigators were directed to a residence in the 1800 block of South Longford Circle. There, officers located a reported missing Ford Fusion and found Johnson deceased inside the vehicle. Officers then entered the home and located Walker in the basement. He was pronounced deceased.

Police release name of suspect in murder of missing Kan. woman

KANSAS CITY —A Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper was injured in an accident that occurred just after 11:30a.m. Tuesday in Clay County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the Trooper was eastbound on MO 210 near Stillhouse Road. The&nbsp; Trooper's vehicle crossed the center line and collided with the trailer of a westbound semi.&nbsp;

EMS transported the Trooper to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The semi driver was not injured.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating in charge of the investigation.&nbsp; Check the Post for additional details as they become available.

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/pam-bondi">Attorney General Pam Bondi</a>&nbsp;repeatedly deflected questions as she sought during a combative congressional hearing on Tuesday to defend herself against&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fbi-justice-department-trump-bondi-bove-adams-a003af9d9aebe89cd289361a65c9401b">growing criticism</a>&nbsp;that she's turning the law enforcement agency into a weapon to seek vengeance against President Donald Trump’s political opponents.

Democrats sought to use the hearing, coming on the heels of the indictment of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/james-comey-charged-lying-congress-a2c72e1a5bb73d588f3af7fdb56caa82">former FBI Director James Comey</a>, to warn of what they view as the politicization of a department that has long prided itself on remaining independent from the White House.

Bondi brushed aside with seeming disdain questions about her tumultuous tenure, flatly refusing to answer time and again as Democrats pressed her on politically charged investigations, the firings of career prosecutors and other matters. Her refusal to engage on the questions meant little if any fresh insight was offered about her actions and decisions, with Bondi instead opting to respond to Democrats' attacks by echoing conservative claims that President Joe Biden's Justice Department — which brought two criminal cases against Trump — was the one that had been weaponized.

“They were playing politics with law enforcement powers and will go down as a historic betrayal of public trust,” Bondi said of the Biden Justice Department. “This is the kind of conduct that shatters the American people’s faith in our law enforcement system. We will work to earn that back every single day.”

The hearing split early along deeply partisan lines, with Republicans repeatedly leaping to her defense to highlight the criminal cases against the president that they say show the institution she inherited was deeply politicized. They pointed to revelations from a day earlier that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fbi-january-6-senate-grassley-26dcd37c3b9e84c0173e63799baf3fa4">the FBI had analyzed phone records</a>&nbsp;of several Republican lawmakers as part of an investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden, a Democrat.

“This is an outrage, an unconstitutional breach and ought to be immediately addressed by you and Director Patel,” Sen. Chuck Grassley, the Republican chairman of the committee, told Bondi, referring to FBI Director Kash Patel.

Democrats, meanwhile, accused Bondi of destroying the department's credibility and eroding its longstanding independence from the White House as the Republican president publicly calls for the prosecution of his political foes.

“What has taken place since January 20th, 2025, would make even President Nixon recoil,” Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the top Democrat on the committee, said of the president who resigned to avoid being impeached in connection with the Watergate scandal. “This is your legacy, Attorney General Bondi. In eight short months, you fundamentally transformed the Justice Department and left an enormous stain in American history. It will take decades to recover.”

Democrats press Bondi on her pledge not to play politics

The hearing marked Bondi's first before the panel since her confirmation hearing last January, when she&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-justice-department-bondi-garland-01edf039f8102271943da4fb85d56fa7">pledged to not play politics</a>&nbsp;with the Justice Department — a promise Democrats pounced on as they pressed the attorney general on whether she can withstand political pressure from the White House.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, reminded Bondi of that commitment and asked her if she thought she had upheld it. Bondi replied that she believed she absolutely had.

“I pledged that I would end the weaponization also of the Justice Department and that America would once again have a one tier system of justice for all,” Bondi said. “And that is what we are doing.”

Bondi set the tone for the hearing at the outset, repeatedly snapping with a raised voice at Durbin and deflecting questions from him by pointing to the murder rate in Chicago and asserting that lawmakers from his party were responsible for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shutdown-health-care-subsidies-obamacare-congress-10b2ae9648bc5252fc2bd485ddc83493">shutting the government down</a>.

“You’re sitting here grilling me, and they’re on their way to Chicago to keep your state safe,” Bondi said, referring to Patel and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.

“Madam Attorney General,” Durbin replied, “it’s my job to grill you.”
