The preliminary hearing for the ongoing case of Kayla Errebo (32), has been rescheduled for next year.

According to the Saline County Attorney's Office, the preliminary hearing that was set for Tuesday has officially been rescheduled to January 5, 2026.

The hearing will be held at the Salina-Saline County building&nbsp;(300 W Ash St), Room 301 at 9:00 am.

Errebo was arrested back on Friday, August 8th for a&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/3e716804-4732-43e4-a3cf-086e2bdc9859">head-on collision</a>&nbsp;into Mark Sommerfeld (61) and Deanna Sommerfeld (55) on a rural Saline County road.&nbsp;Errebo fled from the crash site, but deputies located and arrested her at an address in Ellsworth.&nbsp;

She is booked into the Saline County Jail and is currently facing requested charges of: 

Murder in the second degree, Failure to report an injury accident, Circumvention of ignition interlock device and Probation violation.

Errebo also plead guilty back on October 2024 for&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/fca0f97b-593e-429a-8d0d-ebba84210fe7">fleeing and eluding law enforcement, driving under the influence (DUI) and leaving the scene of an accident.</a>

UPDATE: Court hearing for Errebo rescheduled to next year 

MCPHERSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Tuesday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Ford Edge driven by Irene M.&nbsp;Charles, 57, Gypsum, attempted to enter into southbound traffic from Interstate 135 southbound on ramp at the Lindsborg. The driver failed to yield to traffic and side swiped 2018 Peterbilt semi driven by Zachary P.&nbsp;Vytlacil, 37, Moundridge.

EMS transported Charles to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; Vytlacil was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

After a Salina woman was arrested for the requested charge of Domestic Violence Battery, the public has commented on the report the Salina Police Department (SPD) released regarding the incident.

According to SPD, Estelle Key (31) was arrested on Sunday, October 19 for allegedly 'slapping' a 36-year old man.&nbsp;

Chayla Parsons, sister of Key told Salina Post other details regarding this incident. 

Parsons stated the 36-year old man named, Randy Hulsey was at Big Nose Kate's and was picked up by his 15-year old son, instead of Key. Parsons added, Key was at work during this time.

Hulsey's son then dropped him off at Key's house. Parsons added that Hulsey was 'intoxicated' when he arrived. Key then returned home to obtain one of her children's belongings. 

Furthermore, Key was actively trying to leave the home with four children (ages 1, 12, 6 &amp; 7) of her own that were present. As this was happening, Parsons said Key was actively trying to get in a vehicle to leave with her children, but Hulsey grabbed the 1-year old child from the vehicle.

Key then proceeded to try and retrieve the child from Hulsey, which started the confrontation. Officers arrived shortly afterwards.

Parsons added that Key and Hulsey do not have any children together.

Parsons stated the children are okay, and Key has been released from the Saline County Jail.&nbsp;

Scammers deceive three people in Salina seeking US citizenship to send over $7,000.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Monday afternoon, three people seeking US citizenship visited the Salina Police station regarding a scam.

Reportedly back in January 2025, they were contacted via email by scammers claiming to be 'immigration lawyers.' These scammers advised they could 'assist them with their immigration status.'

Furthermore, the victims received various phone calls, followed by requests of money for filing fees and other reasons since the first initial contact in January.

The victims were listed as two 49-year old females, who lost $2,180 and a 34-year old male, losing $5,550.

SPD told Salina Post, they want to inform the community to be aware of scams, such as this crime.&nbsp;

Get ready for a special performance this weekend at the Stiefel Theatre as "The Bacon Brothers," Kevin and Michael Bacon will perform on Saturday, October 25.

Starting at 7:30 pm, the band will play a genre-blending mix of folk, rock, soul and country. The brothers are currently on tour playing songs from their fan beloved albums and recent 2024 release, "Ballad of the Brothers."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Michael told Salina Post, growing up in the Bacon household was a "creative household."

"We always played music together. We were in a household that only valued creativity and did not care about anything else," said Michael.

After the band was formed in '95, Kevin and Michael started playing in clubs before earning a record deal. Michael added they make their music with 'freedom' and for it to be as 'natural as possible.' This is evident with the diversity that shows up in their discography.

Michael plays a variety of instruments such as acoustic/electric guitar, cello, autoharp, harmonica and tambourine. Kevin plays a large quantity as well ranging from guitar, percussion and harmonica.

"We like it to be all over the place," said Michael. "We just go: here is the song, how do we put it together in the best way and that is the reason we are all over the place."

"When we play the band live, we have an energy and a groove, because we a are feeling it," said Kevin. "We love live music."

Before Kevin got into the film industry, he started as a live theatre actor. He describes what he loves about live performances, is what he has acquired from doing live theatre.

"What I loved about it, was that feeling of being with a group of people, the audience and just sharing this one night with them that is never going to be exactly the same," Kevin said.

With "Ballad of the Brothers" being the 12th studio album, the brothers don't seem to be slowing down and cease from giving their full effort. Kevin commented he treats every song like if its his last.

"Everytime I write a song, I think to myself that this is the last one and its astounding to me that we have that many records of original music," said Kevin. "I am really proud of Ballad of the Brothers, I think it has some really cool stuff on it."

Halloween has a fun side and an eerie, spooky side. For those who lean toward the eerie side, the Kansas Wesleyan Theatre Department is presenting the dramatic version of “Dracula” during Homecoming and the week after.

Play times and dates are 7:00 pm Thursday, October 23, Friday, October 24 and Friday, October 31.&nbsp;Other times include 2:00 pm&nbsp;Sunday, October 26 and Saturday, November 1 in the Fitzpatrick Auditorium on the KWU campus.

“Dracula” is a classic story of horror, the quintessential exploration of good vs. evil that has inspired numerous filmmakers and theatre lovers to adapt the novel into screenplays and scripts, said Karen Babcock Brassea, director and KWU associate professor of Theatre Arts. This new adaptation by Steven Dietz restores the suspense and seduction of Bram Stoker’s classic novel of the same name to the stage.

The suspense and seduction of the story is one reason Brassea chose the play, despite avoiding the horror genre in general. This version will have blood and gore, she said.

“Perhaps it boils down to fascination and a challenge to express something outside my comfort zone,” Brassea said of her choice.

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A Kansas man jailed in connection with a fatal drug overdose involving a teen made his first court appearance on Monday.

&nbsp;Isaac L. Hord, 24, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated&nbsp; endangering a child in the death of 15-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cozine.com/obituaries/kennedy-herren" target="_blank">Kennedy Herren</a>, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp;

Just before 8a.m. on&nbsp;September 14, police responded to the report of a deceased 15-year-old in Wichita, according to a media release from police. The investigation determined the death to be the result of a drug overdose.

Since then, Wichita police overdose analyst have been working to pursue justice and ensure accountability for the people responsible for this senseless death.&nbsp;

Just after 5:30p.m. Oct. 15,&nbsp;K-9 officers arrested Hord, in connection with this case. He remains in custody in the Sedgwick Count Jail on a one-million dollar bond, according to online jail records.

Suspect in overdose death of Kansas girl faces a judge

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Tuesday his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-zelenskyy-putin-russia-ukraine-e3a1d62d2a24f459aa6dbbfa940e1067">plan for a swift meeting</a>&nbsp;with Russian leader Vladimir Putin was on hold because he didn't want it to be a “waste of time.” It was the latest twist in Trump's stop-and-go effort to resolve the war in Ukraine.

The decision to hold off on the meeting in Budapest, Hungary, which Trump had announced last week, was made following a call Monday between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“I don’t want to have a wasted meeting,” Trump said. “I don’t want to have a waste of time — so we’ll see what happens.”

Lavrov made clear in public comments Tuesday that Russia is opposed to an immediate ceasefire. Trump, meanwhile, has been shifting his stance all year on key issues in the war, including whether a ceasefire should come before longer-term peace talks, and whether Ukraine could win back land seized by Russia during almost four years of fighting.

Trump's hesitancy in meeting Putin will likely come as a relief to European leaders, who have accused Putin of stalling for time with diplomacy while trying to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-blackout-energy-winter-grid-074fafac8a4b5bb556308379808d041b">gain ground on the battlefield</a>.

The leaders — including the British prime minister, French president and German chancellor — said they opposed any push to make Ukraine surrender land captured by Russian forces in return for peace, as Trump most recently has suggested.

They also plan to push forward with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/europe-ukraine-russia-assets-frozen-loans-plan-91929d8b2263ace7ea452157f19a6222">plans to use</a>&nbsp;billions of dollars in frozen Russian assets to help fund Ukraine’s war efforts, despite some misgivings about the legality and consequences of such a step.

The U.S. and Russian presidents last&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-putin-summit-ukraine-war-takeaways-b9ff04c4143c6ac228e196ddaf6dd6d3">met in Alaska</a>&nbsp;in August, but the encounter did not advance Trump’s stalled attempts to end a war that began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The Kremlin didn’t seem to be in a rush to get Trump and Putin together again either. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday that “preparation is needed, serious preparation” before a meeting.

Trump suggested that decisions about the meeting would be made in the coming days.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been trying to strengthen Ukraine's position by seeking&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tomahawk-cruise-missile-ukraine-united-states-trump-a0b292b0a0a51486305346550f30f6c0">long-range Tomahawk missiles</a>&nbsp;from the U.S., although Trump has waffled on whether he would provide them.

“We need to end this war, and only pressure will lead to peace,” Zelenskyy said Tuesday in a Telegram post.

He noted that Putin returned to diplomacy and called Trump last week when it looked like Tomahawk missiles were a possibility. But "as soon as the pressure eased a little, the Russians began to try to drop diplomacy, postpone the dialogue,” Zelenskyy said.

On Wednesday, Trump is expected to hold talks in the White House with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The military alliance has been coordinating deliveries of weapons to Ukraine, many of them&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-zelenskyy-trump-drones-05ba74cd9fbefcd81cc90886d091af5a">purchased from the U.S.</a>&nbsp;by Canada and European countries.

A meeting of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-witkoff-europe-61ae60275a00cb442c743181df13b785">Coalition of the Willing</a>&nbsp;— a group of 35 countries who support Ukraine — is due to take place in London on Friday.

How Trump's stance on the war has shifted

Trump initially focused on pressuring Ukraine to make concessions, but then grew frustrated with Putin's intransigence. Trump often complains that he thought his good relationship with his Russian counterpart would have made it easier to end the war.

Last month, Trump reversed his long-held position that Ukraine would have to give up land and suggested it could win back all the territory it has lost to Russia. But after a phone call with Putin last week and a subsequent meeting with Zelenskyy on Friday, Trump shifted his position again and called on Kyiv and Moscow to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-zelenskyy-putin-ukraine-tomahawks-ce697e5eda6ce9793b4343499d105a8c">“stop where they are"</a>&nbsp;and end the war.

On Sunday, Trump said the industrial Donbas region of eastern Ukraine should be “cut up,” leaving most of it in Russian hands.

Trump said Monday that while he thinks it is possible that Ukraine can ultimately defeat Russia,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-zelenskyy-trump-tomahawk-fd61aa7ed980d2fe111f0521073b5382">he’s now doubtful</a>&nbsp;it will happen.

“We strongly support President Trump’s position that the fighting should stop immediately, and that the current line of contact should be the starting point of negotiations,” the leaders' statement said. “We can all see that Putin continues to choose violence and destruction."

Lavrov made clear Tuesday that Russia opposes a ceasefire, Russian state news agencies reported. He told journalists in Moscow that it would go against what the two presidents agreed upon in Alaska. Trump had hoped to get Russia to stop the fighting, but he was rebuffed by Putin, who has pushed for a comprehensive settlement to end the war.

Russia occupies about one fifth of Ukraine, but carving up their country in return for peace is unacceptable to Kyiv officials.

Also, a conflict frozen on the current front line could fester, with occupied areas of Ukraine offering Moscow a springboard for new attacks in the future, Ukrainian and European officials fear.

The statement by the leaders of Ukraine, the U.K., Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Denmark and EU officials came early in what Zelenskyy said Monday would be a week that is “very active in diplomacy.”

More international economic sanctions on Russia are likely to be discussed at an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.

“We must ramp up the pressure on Russia’s economy and its defense industry, until Putin is ready to make peace,” Tuesday’s statement said.

The back-and-forth over Trump’s plans is the latest bout of whiplash caused by his stutter-step efforts to resolve a conflict that has persisted for nearly four years.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders accused Putin of stalling for time to continue his invasion as diplomatic efforts took place. They also said they opposed any push to make Kyiv surrender land captured by Russian forces in return for peace, as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-drones-gas-strikes-energy-50826ce7b96814ad943d8721c1a2915c">Trump has on occasion suggested</a>.

Trump explains why his meeting with Putin on Ukraine war is off

DOUGLAS COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating an alleged violent attack in downtown Lawrene.

Just after 11:30p.m. Monday, police&nbsp;found a man with significant facial injuries near 8th and Massachusetts in Lawrence, according to a social media report from Lawrence Police.

The man told police he was hit several times with a large piece of wood by a man he knew. The suspect had already left the area, but an alert officer found him in Burroughs Creek Park about 2:30 in the morning and took him into custody.&nbsp; Police released no additional details including the name of the suspect or possible charges.

(AP) — A plane carrying passengers from Omaha, Nebraska, to Los Angeles made an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/american-airlines-false-alarm-cockpit-skywest-1842c44dd9264cd80f1b0dbdd741722a">emergency landing</a>&nbsp;minutes into the flight “out of an abundance of caution” after pilots mistakenly thought someone was trying to breach the cockpit.

The SkyWest Flight 6569 had just left Omaha’s Eppley Airfield around 7:45 p.m. Monday when the plane’s pilots declared an emergency and headed back to the airport.

A statement from SkyWest — a regional carrier operated by American Airlines — said the plane “returned to Omaha out of abundance of caution after experiencing communication issues with a flight crew mic.”

An American Airlines spokesperson said Monday night that the intercom pilots and flight attendants use to speak to each other had been left on by accident. The flight crew, unable to communicate with the pilots, banged on the cockpit door, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Fearing an attempted breach of the cockpit, the jet returned to the Omaha airport. A local emergency dispatcher contacted by the airport initially called for officers to meet the plane upon its return based on a report of “people trying to get in to the cockpit.” The dispatcher was later heard canceling that request.

“Advised no emergency,” the dispatcher said. “There was a staffing issue.”

WASHINGTON (AP) —Several GOP senators representing agriculture-rich states are pushing back at the president’s stated plans to buy Argentine beef in order to make beef cheaper for U.S. consumers.

Trump floated the idea to reporters when traveling back from south Florida on Sunday evening.

But that’s prompted concerns from Senate Republicans who say the move would ultimately hurt American ranchers.

North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven said he spoke with Trump, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer about the issue when the president hosted Senate Republicans for lunch at the White House on Tuesday.

“It’s very important that we support our cattle ranchers,” Hoeven said, adding that he expects the administration to say more about the issue.

Montana Sen. Steve Daines also raised his objections to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, he said.

“I’m more concerned about the Argentine beef coming in that’s undercutting our Made in America cattle,” Daines said.

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating another homicide in Kansas City, Missouri.&nbsp;

Just before 12:30a.m. Tuesday,&nbsp;officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Jefferson in Kansas City on report of someone who was shot, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

First responders located a man suffering from gunshot wounds, just inside of an apartment building at the Quality Hill Towers. Officers began performing life saving measures as KCFD Medics arrived. 

EMS declared the victim deceased on scene. This is being investigated as a homicide. 

Detectives are working to determine what led up to the shots being fired and the victim being struck. Police released no additional details including the name of the victims.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a record on Tuesday as the floodgates opened for companies reporting how much profit they made during the summer.

The Dow rose 218 points, or 0.5%, and topped its prior all-time high, which was set early this month. The S&amp;P 500 index, which is much more important on Wall Street and dictates the performance of many more 401(k) accounts, was essentially flat and finished 0.3% below its own record, while the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.2%.

3M helped drive the Dow to its record after reporting bigger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. Its stock had the biggest jump in price among the 30 companies that make up the average.

In the more representative S&amp;P 500 index,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/general-motors-gm-tariffs-trump-barra-517a08be91a4c77e856a9360205986e0">General Motors</a>&nbsp;helped lead the way and rallied 14.9% after reporting stronger quarterly results than analysts expected, while also raising its forecasts for some full-year financial targets. CEO Mary Barra said it’s moving quickly to reduce its losses in 2026 and beyond for its electric-vehicle business, as “it is now clear” that EV adoption will be lower than planned.

RTX, the aerospace and defense company, rose 7.7%, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cocacola-coke-earnings-50d0e25cc1809be7d553df9a41112e7d">Coca-Cola</a>&nbsp;climbed 4.1% after they likewise reported profit for the latest quarter that topped Wall Street’s profit expectations.

Warner Bros. Discovery leaped 11% after the company said it’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/warner-bros-discovery-paramount-addec120019b49a63f3200a0c236e80e">now considering other options</a>&nbsp;besides its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/warner-brothers-discovery-streaming-cable-cnn-tnt-1cdafec11e6cb542ca644e20dd29e826">previously announced split</a>&nbsp;of Discovery Global off Warner Bros., ones that could be more profitable for shareholders. The company said it may be changing course after hearing from “multiple parties” interested in either the entire company or Warner Bros.

Keeping the market in check were drops for some Big Tech stocks, which lost momentum following their own big rallies. A 2.4% drop for Google’s parent company, Alphabet, from its all-time high was among the heaviest weights on the S&amp;P 500. So were Broadcom’s 1.9% fall and Nvidia’s 0.8% decline.

All told, the S&amp;P 500 edged up by 0.22 to 6,735.35 points. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 218.16 to 46,924.74, and the Nasdaq composite slipped 36.88 to 22,953.67.

Other big recent winners in financial markets also took a pause. The price of gold fell 5.7% from its latest record, dropping back to $4,109.10 per ounce. It’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gold-prices-today-economic-uncertainty-54df4547db76db81a58cdf058548b148">still up nearly 56%</a>&nbsp;for the year so far.

The pressure is on companies to show that their profits are growing following a torrid rally of 35% for the S&amp;P 500 from a low in April. It’s one way they can justify their high stock prices amid criticism&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stock-market-rates-records-shutdown-earnings-ai-251fefd075ac658ce498c9d1953efc70">that they’re too expensive</a>.

Corporate earnings reports have also gained importance because they offer some details on the strength of the U.S. economy when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shutdown-trump-furloughs-firings-economy-federal-workers-efced4c32282087c8c53aeab535230a0">the U.S. government’s shutdown</a>&nbsp;has delayed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-jobs-federal-reserve-shutdown-d1b62eb3e6d6ca7a5b8d654fffa7b5d7">important economic updates</a>. The delays are making the job of the Federal Reserve more difficult, as it tries to decide whether&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/federal-reserve-inflation-trump-tariffs-prices-consumer-0a10b8f245eb90115c84026d7061d2b0">high inflation</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-jobs-openings-unemployment-inflation-federal-reserve-60b8f481cdbc56f96829817a2992e508">the slowing job market</a>&nbsp;is the bigger issue for the economy.

Despite the shutdown, the Commerce Department will release its report on for U.S. consumers Friday, which could help guide the Fed’s policy on what to do with interest rates. It’s the government’s first data release since the shutdown began on Oct. 1.

In stock markets abroad, indexes rose across much of Europe and Asia.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 added 0.3% and crept closer to the 50,000 level as conservative lawmaker&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/japan-first-female-prime-minister-vote-trump-24b4a5e2a2b777139de66e38665ced0d">Sanae Takaichi</a>&nbsp;became the country’s prime minister. Investors expect her to push for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/japan-economy-takaichi-nikkei-13c0543e79855cd7a4a046e4c5249825">lower interest rates and other policies</a>&nbsp;that could help the market.

Indexes rose 1.4% in Shanghai and 0.7% in Hong Kong amid expectations that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-xi-jinping-china-asia-8f21df3df6fa3f51ca4ab4dfcf7669ba">President Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month during a regional summit. That’s raised hopes for an easing of trade tensions between the world’s biggest economies.

Dow hits a record as 3M, Coca-Cola and other big US stocks climb

SHAWNEE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 9:30p.m. Monday in Shawnee County.

According to Shawnee County Deputy Abigail Christian, a &nbsp;2002 Honda Odyssey driven by&nbsp;Terry L. Friesen, 63, of Ozawkie, was eastbound in the 900 block of NE 62nd Street.&nbsp; The minivan traveled off the roadway to the left, through&nbsp;a ditch continued over a driveway, through a field, and came to rest at the tree line.

American Medical Response transported Friesen to a local hospital&nbsp;with life-threatening injuries and she was later pronounced deceasd.

 She did not appear to be wearing a seat belt, according to Deputy Christian.

Kansas woman dies after violent minivan crash

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/us-supreme-court">The Supreme Court</a>&nbsp;said on Monday that it will consider whether people who regularly smoke marijuana can legally own guns, the latest firearm case to come before the court since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-guns-decision-58d01ef8bd48e816d5f8761ffa84e3e8">its 2022 decision expanding gun rights</a>.
