Now from every Friday until the first week of August, Salina Family YMCA will be giving away groceries to children as part of their summer food program.

'Grab N Go' is what will be happening every Friday this summer until the first week of August. Senior Director of Youth Development for Salina Family YMCA, Marti Higdon stated that this giveaway is part of their summer food program. The program is for children ages 1-18 and is only valid for them to receive the meals/groceries, however parents or a representative of the child can pick up the groceries.

The giveaway occurs at the Church of the Cross UMC parking lot every Friday, between&nbsp;1512 Rush St. and 1600 Rush St. from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm (or until they run out). Those receiving the groceries can drive to the location and volunteers will place them in vehicles.

"I just absolutely love knowing that there are kids in the community that are full-belied everyday," said Higdon. "It takes the pressure off of families, especially during this time of year."

Although part of Salina Family YMCA staff assists with Grab N Go, volunteers from any background are encouraged to come and help with the giveaway every Friday. Higdon commented that they are needing volunteers and people wanting to, can do so by going to the their website.

Every Friday, volunteers start preparing for the giveaway at around 2:30 pm and at 4:00 pm the giveaway begins and lasts until around 6:00 pm.&nbsp;

"This a great opportunity to be able to give back to the community, whether you are an individual that needs food or if you just love to give back," said&nbsp;Child Nutrition Director, Stacy Jagodzinske. "It is so rewarding to be able to help and serve others."

Volunteers are able to receive free groceries as well, after they have served. 

The groceries consist of 5 breakfasts and 5 supper meals for Saturday through Wednesday. Jagodzinske stated that anyone wishing to sign up to receive the meals, but may suffer from any food allergens are encouraged to contact the Salina Family YMCA (785) 825-2151 and request for a 'meal modification.'

Families must register weekly for their child and this helps you know if you will receive food and reduces wait times.

A letter to the editor is a written way of talking to a newspaper, magazine, or other regularly printed publication. Letters to the editor are generally found in the first section of the newspaper, or towards the beginning of a magazine, or in the editorial page. They can take a position for or against an issue, or simply inform, or both. They can convince readers by using emotions, or facts, or emotions and facts combined. 

Letters to the editor are usually short and tight, rarely longer than 300 words.

Using a few carefully placed letters, you can generate plenty of community discussion. You can also keep an issue going by preventing it from disappearing from the public eye. You can stimulate the interest of the news media and create more coverage for the matters you're working on. You can also send a "good news" letter to bring recognition to people who deserve it or acknowledge the success of an effort.

The Salina League of Women Voters held its 2024 General Election Forum on Oct. 20 at 1:30 in the Watson Room at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Cope Notes is a text message-based service that provides individuals with randomly timed messages that contain anything from psychology facts to exercises and journaling prompts. Every subscriber’s text sequence is unique so that no two users ever receive the same message at the same time. 

Each <a href="https://copenotes.com/">Cope Notes</a> text must first undergo a thorough review process by a panel of peer-support advocates and mental health professionals, in order to ensure that the messages will have a positive effect on the subscriber’s health. The ultimate goal of the service is to train the brain to disrupt negative thoughts and promote a more positive pattern of thinking.

"We believe in the importance of mental health. We want to ensure our residents have access to the resources they need to stay healthy and thriving," said Saline County Health Officer Jason Tiller. "In my own personal experience with Cope Notes, I have found that the right messages seem to come at exactly the right time. It was been an uplifting experience for me, and I am thrilled we get to continue this service to our residents."

In 2022, Saline County initially offered the service for free to 300 residents. Because of the overwhelming response and in an effort to provide the service to more Saline County residents, the program is being offered at a 50 percent discount, according to information from the county.

Saline County continues to offer Cope Notes at 50-percent discount

Not seeing precipitation totals from your area after a rain or snow event? Consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.

"CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications," the organization noted on its website.

After rain, hail, or snow storms, CoCoRaHS volunteers take precipitation measurements. Those totals are then recorded on the CoCoRaHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/StateDailyPrecipReports.aspx?state=KS">website</a>&nbsp;(Kansas reporting).

The precipitation totals are used by various organizations and individuals, including the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, farmers and ranchers, and, of course, Salina Post.

Precipitation reporting organization seeks local, area volunteers

What’s worse than a bogus charity? A bogus charity with a dishonest fundraiser. The FTC has sued and stopped dishonest charity fundraisers that&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2020/09/spot-and-stop-dishonest-charity-fundraisers">called people</a>&nbsp;to get them to donate to fake charities. Some prey on your kindness and desire to help people impacted by weather emergencies or a disaster. But when you get a call from a charity fundraiser, how do you know the caller is telling you the truth?

Ask the caller specific questions.

What is the charity’s name, phone number, or address? Write these down so you can confirm them later. Keep in mind that many charity names sound alike, and that sham charities often use names that are sound and look like names of legitimate charities.

How much of your donation will go directly to the programs you want to support?

Will your donation be tax-deductible? Not every call seeking a donation is from a charity. Some calls might be from Political Action Committees or other groups where donations are not deductible. See more questions to ask here.

Resist the pressure to donate on the spot.

After you’ve listened to the caller, hang up the phone and think about what they said. Then, go online and do your own research:

Search for the organization’s name and phone number, plus the word “scam” or “complaint.” What you find might help you decide if you want to make that donation.

Look up the organization’s name and address. Does it show up? If it doesn’t, that could be a sign the caller was lying to you.

FTC: How to spot and stop dishonest charity fundraisers

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The start of a new school year is an expensive time for families. If you are struggling to pay for phone and internet services, there are programs to help you stay connected.

During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in encouraging those in need of assistance to apply for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program.&nbsp; Both programs help low-income individuals and families stay connected so they can access health care, attend classes, find employment, and call for help in an emergency.

Lifeline provides federal and state discounts up to $17.02 per month on phone service (wireless or residential) and broadband. Seven million Americans currently benefit from the program, including approximately 30,000 Kansans.

The Federal Communication Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Plan&nbsp; provides a monthly internet service discount of up to $30 and a one-time device discount of up to $100 for a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. According to FCC data, more than 20 million U.S. households are currently enrolled, including approximately 120,000 in Kansas.

Eligibility&nbsp;is based on income&nbsp;(at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for Lifeline and at or below 200% for Affordable Connectivity Plan)&nbsp;or participation in certain assistance programs&nbsp;such as:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) •&nbsp; Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) •&nbsp; Federal Public Housing Assistance (FHPA) •&nbsp; Veterans Pensions &amp; Survivors Pension Benefit •&nbsp; Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance •&nbsp; Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families •&nbsp; Head Start Tribal Programs (income based) •&nbsp; Food Distribution Program on Tribal Lands&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anyone who qualifies for Lifeline is automatically eligible to participate in Affordable Connectivity Plan. Others may still qualify for the plan if they meet any of the following criteria:

• Are approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including the&nbsp;USDA Community Eligibility Provision.&nbsp; • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year.&nbsp; • Meet the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income program.&nbsp;

Due to higher income maximums, Affordable Connectivity Plan  also has the potential to help families that may not qualify for other types of assistance. The maximum income for a family of four to qualify for the&nbsp; program is&nbsp;$60,000 per year compared to $40,500 for Lifeline. Both Lifeline and Affordable Connectivity Plan offer additional discounts for subscribers living on tribal lands.

Plans available to help Kansans unable to pay for phone, internet services stay connected

Construction has started today&nbsp;of a raised pedestrian crossing on YMCA Drive.&nbsp;

According to the City of Salina, construction will take up the&nbsp;entire width of the roadway. As a result, YMCA Drive will be closed between the entrances to the Salina Family YMCA.

Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes and use caution near the work zone.

Accordingly, this work is part of the City of Salina’s $5.9 million 2025 maintenance capital improvement program.

Salina Family YMCA stated that improvements after this construction will include:

Installation of safety traffic signs with blinking lights at crosswalks. 

Enhanced entrances to the east parking lot.

Salina Family YMCA encourages those entering from Westchester Dr., to enter and take a sharp right in the lane created by the traffic cones all the way to the north end of the lot then proceed into the lot as usual. YMCA states that this is the 'safest way for traffic to flow and allow for normal parking.'

The project is expected to take up to 2-3 weeks.

Construction taking place on YMCA Drive, improvements to follow

Salina Police have apprehended a male suspect who ran away from Saline County Sheriff deputies, after an attempted arrest at CKF Addiction Treatment.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Thursday, June 26th at around 5:00 pm, SPD received a call that reported 36-year old Levi Sanderson was in the area of the 1200 block of E. Cloud.

Officers then arrived to the scene and located Sanderson walking in the area. Afterwards, officers approached and arrested him without incident. Sanderson was booked into the Saline County Jail and is facing the following requested charges:

Aggravated escape from custody, Held for Felony, Possession drug paraphernalia, Possession of opiate, narcotic, or certain stimulant.

Sanderson was a suspect that was in connection to running away from Saline County Sheriff deputies, when he was a 'court ordered patient' at the CKF Addiction Treatment facility.

The City of Salina has announced construction that will be starting on Tuesday, July 1st in the intersections of Marymount and Glen, lasting for about 4 weeks.

The following is a statement from the City of Salina:

Beginning Tuesday, July 1, 2025, Smoky Hill Construction will be working in the intersection of Marymount Road and Glen Avenue. Pavement will be removed, existing utilities will be located, and a new water main will be installed. Eastbound Glen Avenue will be closed to traffic from Marymount Road to Aullwood Road. Northbound Marymount Road will be reduced to one-lane through Glen Avenue. Access to adjacent properties will be maintained. Work is expected to last four weeks and be completed by July 29, weather permitting.

Appropriate barriers will be in place to ensure the safety of workers. Motorists may encounter minor delays and are encouraged to find alternate routes.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture invites you to join them in Manhattan this summer as they discuss growth opportunities for agriculture at the 10th&nbsp;annual Kansas Governor’s Summit on Agricultural Growth on Thursday, August 14, at the K-State Alumni Center at 1720 Anderson Ave. in Manhattan, followed by a networking event, also at the K-State Alumni Center.

Salina Parks and Recreation is inviting the community to attend a fun family-filled event for the 4th of July celebration.

On Friday, July 4th 'Play Day in the Park' will be held at Oakdale Park from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm for&nbsp;a day full of live entertainment, face painting, sidewalk chalk, games, food and more.&nbsp;

This is day 5 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest is progressing steadily across parts of Kansas, with yields generally around average despite challenges like strong winds, scattered rain and wheat streak mosaic virus. Weather and market conditions remain obstacles. Growers are staying optimistic and focused on finishing the season successfully.

Jess Schwieterman, who farms with his wife Laryce in Hamilton County near Syracuse, reports that this year’s harvest has been going well, despite strong winds and a few rain showers. They received a good November rain, but no winter moisture and a dry March and April until it started raining the week after Easter. The grain fill conditions were excellent, and yields have been right around average, similar to last year. Test weights have held up around 60 to 61 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;

High winds brought in a spring infection of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, turning the fields yellow. Schwieterman mentioned several varieties that have proven to have good resistance - KS Territory, KS Bill Snyder and KS Dallas. Their harvest began on June 20 and is nearly halfway finished. However, others in the area are just getting started. They have been pleased with yields, noting that the longer the fields are in no-till, the better they yield. They also manage for higher yields and have a strong fertility program. The biggest challenge this year has been the depressed wheat prices.

Kris Allen, general manager of Randall Farmers Coop in Jewell County, reports that harvest has been moving steadily across their two locations. Since taking in their first load on June 16, they’ve brought in around 700,000 bushels. Yields are ranging from 45 to 60 bushels per acre, and protein levels are holding solid at 12.6. Depending on the area, fields are about halfway to two-thirds cut, with combines rolling steadily. While this year isn’t quite as massive as last year’s crop, fueled by failed acres the season before, it’s still shaping up to be a strong and successful year.&nbsp;

Over halfway done with harvest, Brian Sieker, a farmer in Rice county, is facing the challenges of a wet season head-on, and staying optimistic.

“Mud is a challenge, but we’re grateful for it,” Sieker said. “Moisture is a welcome sight for our crop.”

On average, fields have produced 40-70 bushels per acre. Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) has taken a toll on both yield and test weight this year, prompting a change in how he’ll select varieties going forward.

“In the future, I will be taking varieties for WSMV; I haven’t in the past,” Sieker said. “We have to protect our neighbors because the investment is huge and margins are thin.”

With winter in mind, Sieker said he’s glad to have residue left in the fields. “It’s nice to have the stubble. It will hold us through the winter.”

Above all, he encourages others to check in with each other and find joy in the season.

“Check on your neighbors," he said. "Enjoy the process. Harvest is a fun but stressful time.”

Day 5: Kansas Wheat Harvest report

ABILENE - A street named after the hometown of the 34th President of the United States was approved to be established in the state of Virginia during a city council meeting.

On Monday, June 23rd during a city council meeting in Alexandria, VA council members proposed a new street named 'Abilene Street' after former U.S. President, Dwight D. Eisenhower's hometown. According to the City of Alexandria, 'Abilene Street' would run perpendicular to 'Eisenhower Avenue' in Alexandria.

During the meeting, a vote of 6-1 was motioned to approve 'Abilene Street.'

Eisenhower served as President of the U.S. for two terms from January 20th, 1953 - January 20th, 1961.

Eisenhower was born on&nbsp;October 14th, 1890 and passed away on&nbsp;March 28th, 1969.

City in Virginia approves new street to be named after Dwight D. Eisenhower's hometown 

WICHITA, Kan. (June 26, 2025)—Kala’i Rosario drove in three runs in a 5-0 Wichita Wind Surge victory over the Springfield Cardinals at Equity Bank Park. The Wind Surge put up all five runs over the second and third innings while a pitching trio shut out the Cardinals for the second time this week.&nbsp;

C.J. Culpepper threw his longest outing of the season with Wichita, going for four innings and giving up just three hits and a walk with a strikeout. He’s improved in outing length for his first three Wind Surge starts in 2025.&nbsp;

Kyler Fedko stroked a solo home run to right field, his 14th of the year, in the bottom of the second. He’s hit two long balls in three games so far this week.&nbsp;

Wichita put up four runs on three hits and an error in the home half of the third. After loading the bases on a Jake Rucker single to left and two walks, Rosario pummeled a bases-clearing triple to the left-center alley. Ricardo Olivar laced a single to left field past a diving Ramon Mendoza to score Rosario and make the score 5-0 Wind Surge.&nbsp;

That score would remain that until the end of the night thanks to Jaylen Nowlin and Aaron Rozek. Nowlin threw two no-hit frames of relief action with three strikeouts, earning the win and improving to 3-0 on the season. Aaron Rozek took it the rest of the way with just two hits and a walk over the final three frames, recording all of his final six outs via the swinging strikeout to secure the shutout win.&nbsp;

Wichita Shuts Out Springfield For The Second Time This Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State will play Mississippi State in the second game of the Hall of Fame Classic at 8:30 p.m., CT on Thursday, Nov. 20 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, as the NABC announced the complete bracket for the 25th annual event on Thursday (June 26).

Nebraska and New Mexico will open the tournament at 6 p.m., CT on Thursday. The winners of the two semifinal matchups will play in the championship game at 8:30 p.m., CT on Friday, Nov. 21 with the consolation bracket set for 6 p.m., CT.

All games will be streamed on <a href="https://www.peacocktv.com/">Peacock</a> and <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/now">NBC Sports NOW</a>.

Tickets for the 2025 Hall of Fame Classic will go on sale via the T-Mobile Center box office and <a href="http://t-mobilecenter.com/">t-mobilecenter.com</a> on Sept. 3.

The Bulldogs are coming off their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2024-25 with a third straight 20-win season under head coach Chris Jans. They finished in a four-way tie for ninth in the rugged SEC with Arkansas, Georgia and Vanderbilt with an 8-10 mark.

This will be the fifth all-time meeting between the schools and the first since a 67-61 MSU win at the Never Forget Tribute Classic in Newark, N.J., on Dec. 14, 2019. K-State won the previous three meetings in the series in 1984, 1985 and 1994.

Nebraska won the inaugural College Basketball Crown tournament championship in 2025, finishing with a 21-14 record and a 7-13 mark in Big Ten play. New Mexico (27-8) captured the Mountain West regular-season championship with a 17-3 record and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.

K-State leads the all-time series with both Nebraska (128-94) and New Mexico (4-2), having last met the Lobos in 2006 and Cornhuskers in 2023.

K-State will be making its fourth appearance in the Hall of Fame Classic and the first since 2021. The Wildcats finished as the tournament runner-up in their first two visits, defeating No. 18 Gonzaga before losing to top-ranked Duke in 2010 and defeating Missouri before losing to No. 9 North Carolina in 2015. The team lost to No. 13 Arkansas and No. 14 Illinois in their most recent appearance in 2021.

The Hall of Fame Classic was created by the Kansas City-based National Association of Basketball Classic (NABC) in 2001 as the Guardians Classic and was later known as the CBE Classic and CBE Hall of Fame Classic before being rebranded as the Hall of Fame Classic in 2017.

K-State to Play Mississippi State at Hall of Fame Classic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Shane Baz allowed three hits over a career-best eight innings, Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero hit back-to-back homers in the sixth, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 4-0 on Thursday for a three-game sweep.

Baz (8-3) struck out nine and walked one. Jacob Lowe had three hits for the Rays, and Jake Mangum hit a run-scoring triple.

Tampa Bay has won five of six to move a season-high 11 games above .500 (46-35) and a half-game behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees, who were off Thursday.

Paul Gervase gave up singles to Jonathan India and Vinnie Pasquantino before Pete Fairbanks came on with one out in the ninth and got Maikel Garcia to ground into a 6-4-3 double play for his 15th save.

Tampa Bay starters have thrown 22 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

The Royals were also shut out on Wednesday and scored one run in their three losses to the Rays. Kansas City has gone 14-27 (.341) — third worst in the majors over that span — since starting the season 24-16 (.600).

Jonathan Aranda hit a two-out double and then scored on Mangum's triple off starter Michael Lorenzen (4-8) before Josh Lowe added an RBI single to cap Tampa Bay's two-run fourth.

The Rays are the first team in the majors to sweep three road series this season. Tampa Bay swept a three-game series at the New York Mets earlier this month and won three straight at San Diego in April.

WICHITA, Kan. (June 25, 2025)—Kala’i Rosario hit for the cycle in a 10-1 Wichita Wind Surge win over the Springfield Cardinals at Equity Bank Park.&nbsp;

John Klein struck out a season-high nine hitters over five innings with two hits, an earned run, and a walk finishing out his line. He improved to 5-4 on the year with the win, while Ricky Castro earned his second save after throwing for the final three innings with just two walks given up besides three strikeouts.&nbsp;

Rosario smoked a ground ball double the other way to right center to bring in Gabby Gonzalez for a 1-0 Wind Surge lead in the bottom of the first. Jorel Ortega gave Wichita another run on a sacrifice fly to right field in the home half of the second.&nbsp;
