SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple charges&nbsp;

Just before 3a.m. Oct. 4, police served a narcotics search warrant on a vehicle during a traffic stop in the 700 Block SW Fairlawn in Topeka, according to Police Captain Jerry Monasmith.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Officers located methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, marijuana, forgery documents and a firearm.

As a result 40-year-old Corey Scales and 35-year-old Candace Scales both of Topeka were transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Corey Scales was booked on requested charges of Possession of methamphetamine with the intent of distribution, Criminal possession of a weapon by a felon,&nbsp;Aggravated endangering a child; Reckless Situation and Possession of marijuana.

Candace Scales is being held on Possession of methamphetamine with the intent of distribution, Criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, Aggravated endangering a child; Reckless Situation, Possession of drug paraphernalia with intent of distribution and Forgery.

(AP) — Kansas' Democratic governor is trying to reassert control over the education debate in a tough reelection race, bidding to regain her preferred focus on public school spending hikes during her term after Republican attacks over transgender athletes and what's taught in the classrooms,

Gov. Laura Kelly sought Wednesday to portray Republican challenger Derek Schmidt, the state's three-term attorney general, as a threat to adequate funding for public schools in their second and final debate. Kelly has branded herself as “the education governor” over her support for greater education spending.

But Schmidt has emphasized what he calls parents' rights, or making it easier for parents to challenge classroom materials and seek to remove books they find objectionable from libraries, a key issue. Schmidt's approach recalls a strategy that helped Republican Glenn Youngkin win over suburban parents and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-education-parental-rights-school-curricula-604edece27a483155c409187f258a058">triumph in the 2021 governor's race</a>&nbsp;in normally blue Virginia. He's also pounding on the incumbent, saying Kelly allowed students to be “locked out of schools” for months during the coronavirus pandemic.

Kelly, a target for the national GOP, takes credit for Kansas increasing its spending on K-12 schools&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/16d63062f0a645f6a9231e22b623e9fb">enough to satisfy multiple state Supreme Court rulings</a>&nbsp;in a lawsuit filed against the state in 2010. Schmidt has said that as governor he would ensure the state keeps spending enough money, but as attorney general, he defended past Republican school funding laws that the court declared insufficient under the Kansas Constitution.

“You know, I have a hard time being lectured by you on public schools,” Kelly told Schmidt during their debate in the Kansas City suburbs, sponsored by the local association for attorneys.

Kelly has tried to tie Schmidt to former GOP Gov. Sam Brownback, who launched a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/f5741d8d0d8c40979857c9d2d6afae9f">nationally notorious experiment</a>&nbsp;in cutting state income taxes in 2012-13 that was followed by large, persistent budget deficits. Most of the experiment was repealed in 2017, and the state's finances have improved dramatically since.

Schmidt mocked Kelly's attempt to portray him as a clone of Brownback, saying, “The governor has an unhealthy obsession with her predecessor.”

In a wide-ranging debate, Schmidt also softened his previous opposition to legalizing marijuana for medical purposes, saying broad public support for it would lead him to back a narrow legalization law. Kelly supports medical marijuana.

Schmidt, who supported a proposed anti-abortion amendment to the Kansas Constitution that voters decisively rejected in August, challenged Kelly to name a restriction she would support. She didn't, saying only, “Women should have bodily autonomy equal with men.”

But education and school funding are potent issues, especially in vote-rich Kansas City suburbs that have used strong public schools to fuel economic and population growth.

The Republican Governors Association has tried to undercut Kelly's appeal to the middle with TV ads attacking her for vetoing two proposals&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-education-legislature-gay-rights-kansas-e32307ef93c0c64056e34f2d8a51efe2">to ban transgender athletes</a>&nbsp;from girls' and women's school and college sports teams. Kelly later broadcast an ad in which she said she doesn't support men playing girls' sorts, leading Republicans to charge that she was lying about her record. She repeated that statement Wednesday, saying sports bodies can handle such cases.

Schmidt also criticized Kelly's for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/8e5672095558ab92d7505f2a06f9a9b9">closing school buildings</a>&nbsp;for the last two months of the 2019-20 school year to check the spread of COVID-19. He also attacked her veto of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/topeka-kansas-legislature-libraries-9ffb07cf3b25faf848dda6d78bff8856">a proposed “parents' bill of rights”</a>&nbsp;that would have made it easier for parents to challenge classroom materials and seek to remove books they find objectionable from libraries, such as LGBTQ-themed novels.

Schmidt has promised to sign such a measure and restrictions on transgender athletes within 100 days of taking office. “We can have a state that strongly supports public education — and puts parents and students first,” Schmidt said in his closing remarks.

Teachers, education groups and Democrats argue that parents already can object to classroom materials and library books. And Kelly allies had a news conference last week in Topeka to shift the conversation by questioning Schmidt's record on school funding.

When Brownback was governor, the state's basic aid per student to local schools remained almost flat for five years, starting in 2012-13, even as its total spending rose modestly to cover other expenses, including teacher pensions. Under Kelly, spending has grown almost twice as fast as under her Republican predecessors.

Increases in spending before Kelly took office in January 2019 were forced by Kansas Supreme Court rulings — as the court repeatedly rejected arguments from Schmidt's office that lawmakers were doing enough to meet their duty under the state constitution to finance a suitable education for every child.

“Everybody remembers what the state looked like four years ago," Kelly said.

Kansas governor seeks to regain control of education debate

The Los Angeles City Council voted to enact one of the nation's strictest vaccine mandates; it required the shots for everyone entering bars, restaurants, nail salons, gyms and even a Lakers game. The World Health Organization endorsed the world's first malaria vaccine and said it should be given to children across Africa in the hope that it would spur stalled efforts to curb the spread of the parasitic disease; the vaccine was developed by GlaxoSmithKline in 1987.

With deepest sorrow, we announce that&nbsp;Cole Darran Rodenbeek, age 39, our beloved father, son, brother, fiance, family member and friend passed away on Saturday, October 1st, 2022 in a car accident.&nbsp; 

Cole made his grand entrance into the world on December 25th, 1982.&nbsp; He was known to say that he wanted to make sure everyone remembered his birthday.

Cole grew up in Salina, but spent time living in Reno, NV and Denver, CO amassing friends from across the country.&nbsp; 

In 2010, he married Kyrsten (Beckmann) and they had two beautiful children, Payge and Marley, who were and are the lights of their lives. &nbsp;

You can't explain Cole, you have to experience Cole." This quote, by one of his friends, perfectly sums up the man. He lived and loved large. 

In 2020, he and fiance Meredith Frazier moved to Lawrence and bought a home in the country.&nbsp; They quickly turned that home into a farm fully stocked with goats, chickens, dogs, cats, children, and lots of love and laughter.&nbsp; There was always a friend or two, or twenty, stopping by, and Cole welcomed them all. His most enduring gift was his ability to spin a yarn.&nbsp; He could stretch an ordinary tale into a two hour narrative full of truths, but mostly half truths. Cole loved to wow people and make them laugh. What Cole loved most of all was to be surrounded by his children. His proudest moments involved Payge and Marley.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Cole is predeceased by grandparents William and Evelyn Cole of Salina; Betty Rodenbeek of Salina;&nbsp; great-grandparents Nathan and Dorothy Butcher of Salina; and Edward and Ruby Rodenbeek of Scott City.

Cole will be missed everyday by his fiancée, Meredith Frazier and her two children, Jack and Kincaid of the home; his son, Payge Rodenbeek, of Bennington; his daughter, Marley Rodenbeek, of Bennington;  his mother, Barbara Nitz and stepfather, Rod, of Lawrence; fathers, Michael Rodenbeek, of Salina, Paul Lowe and wife Terry, of Reno, NV; grandfather, Jim Rodenbeek, of Scott City; brothers, Noah Rodenbeek and wife Renee, of Lawrence, Benton Bates and wife Amanda, of Denver; sister, Alexandria Keith and husband Troy, of Lawrence; sister, Caitlin Sidener, of Mission, KS; brother, Max Lowe, of Reno, NV; sister, Marina Lowe, of Seattle, WA; sister, Chloe Vaugirard and husband Loic, of Miami, FL; sister, Lilly Bristow of Brookville; step brothers, Karl Nitz and wife Stacy, of Frisco, TX, and Ryan Nitz and wife Alicia, of Falmouth, Maine.

Cole loved and was loved by his many nieces and nephews.

It would be remiss not to include all of Cole’s friends, whom he loved most fiercely.

This quote, by one of his friends, perfectly sums up the man. He lived and loved large. In 2020, he and fiance Meredith Frazier moved to Lawrence and bought a home in the country.&nbsp; They quickly turned that home into a farm fully stocked with goats, chickens, dogs, cats, children, and lots of love and laughter.&nbsp; There was always a friend or two, or twenty, stopping by, and Cole welcomed them all. His most enduring gift was his ability to spin a yarn.&nbsp; He could stretch an ordinary tale into a two hour narrative full of truths, but mostly half truths. Cole loved to wow people and make them laugh. What Cole loved most of all was to be surrounded by his children. SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug allegations after a traffic stop.

Just before 8:30p.m. Sept. 30, a K9 deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Ford Taurus, with an expired temporary license plate, on Interstate 470 at SW 21st Street in Topeka, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 The K9 partner assisted and illegal narcotics were located.

Deputies arrested the driver, Brantin A. Beeton, 28, and the passenger, Chelsea A. Peavler, 30, both of Topeka. 

They were booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Beeton on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, no vehicle liability insurance and operating a motor vehicle with an expired tag. Peavler was held on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia

Kansas sheriff's K9 finds meth during interstate traffic stop

Margaret Ann Darrah Sheets, of McPherson, Kansas passed away Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Cedars House, McPherson, Kansas. Margaret, daughter of Andrew J. and Lydia (Prosser) Darrah, was born on July 27, 1929, in the McPherson Hospital and lived her entire life in McPherson, Kansas.

 She attended the McPherson public schools and McPherson College, where she obtained an Associate’s xegree in slementary sducation. She enjoyed her two years of teaching at the Groveland School and one year at Mitchell School.

She was a lifetime member of the Congregational Church.

Margaret met her husband, William J. “Bill” Sheets, in 7th grade, when they both played clarinet in the school band. From then on they were inseparable and married on August 12, 1950, in the Congregational Church, McPherson, Kansas. There were two children born of this marriage, John “Brent,” born January 31, 1952, and Mary Margaret, born March 4, 1954. 

She became a stay-at-home mom, but was also active in PTA, Congregational Sunday School, 20th Century, Progressive Literature, Domestic Art, Chapter EU of PEO, and was a life member of Hospital Auxiliary. Margaret spent several years volunteering at her children’s school as room mother, as well as Den Mother for the Scouts.

A friend asked if she and Bill would open her home for a student of the Experiment in International Living. They agreed and this experience led to an interesting lifelong friendship with a student from Thailand. Wipapan quickly became a much loved member of the family and is still keeping contact with her “American family.” They also hosted another group from Mexico.

Margaret was able to give her mother much attention while Lydia lived at the Friends Inn in downtown McPherson and later when she entered the Cedars Care Home on East Kansas. She went daily to the Cedars to give her mother help and saw the need for such a facility. This led her to become an active member on the Cedars Board where she served for a number of years.

After that, she and Bill enjoyed many traveling experiences and spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She loved her flowers and gardening, her dogs, and spending time with her friends and family. After she lost her eye sight, she loved listening to her audio books and music.

She was able to cope with several health issues, including diabetes and loss of eye sight, which later required she and Bill moving to the Cedars Assisted Living. After Bill's passing she transferred to the Cedars Health Care and she established many friendships with fellow residents while living there.

Margaret passed peacefully under the care of Kindred Hospice at Cedars Health Care, 805 N. Maxwell, McPherson, Kansas.

She is survived by her son Brent and daughter-in-law Debbie Sheets of McPherson, Kansas; her daughter Mary and son-in-law Brad Spilman of Shawnee, Kansas. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Kim Veer (Matt) Melville, SK Canada; Timothy “T.J.” Dearing (Lindsay) McPherson, KS; Tommy Dearing (Amie) Maryville, TN; Chad Spilman (Alisa) Littleton, CO; Andy Spilman (Sophia) Blanchard, OK; Allison Wade (Vince) Overland Park, KS; and fourteen great-grandchildren, Garrett and Kendall (Veer), Trace and Teague (Dearing), Jacqueline and Olivia (Dearing), Jake, Braeden, Caleb and Olivia (Spilman), Sam, Addie and Ellla (Spilman), and Lydia (Wade).

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill Sheets, and her sister Mary Jane Ashen-Brenner.

A religious service will be held on Monday, October 10, 2022 at First Christian Church (DOC) in McPherson, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Lynn Scott officiating. The family asks that you please join them following the service for a meal at the church.

The family requests donations to First Christian Church (DOC), McPherson or McPherson Humane Society and they can be sent to Glidden-Ediger-Wiggins Funeral Home, 222 W. Euclid St., McPherson, Kansas 67460.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal stabbing have a suspect in custody.

Just before 2a.m. Monday, police were dispatched to the 1000 block of East First Street in Wichita on report of a stabbing, according to&nbsp;Officer Juan Rebolledo.

Upon arrival, officers located 25-year-old Trebeon Golston of Wichita unconscious with multiple stab wounds to his upper body. Officers began life-saving measures. EMS transported Golston to an area hospital with critical injuries. He was later pronounced deceased.

During the investigation, officers learned about a fight in front of a local establishment between Golston and a 38-year-old suspect identified as Jason Todd, according Sedgwick County booking records. During the fight Golston was stabbed multiple times.

This was not a random incident. Todd is being held on <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=73376">one count of first-degree murder</a>, according to online jail records.

 The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Loretta Lynn, the Kentucky coal miner’s daughter whose frank songs about life and love as a woman in Appalachia pulled her out of poverty and made her a pillar of country music, has died. She was 90.

In a statement provided to The Associated Press, Lynn’s family said she died Tuesday at her home in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.

Lynn already had four children before launching her career in the early 1960s, and her songs reflected her pride in her rural Kentucky background.

As a songwriter, she crafted a persona of a defiantly tough woman, a contrast to the stereotypical image of most female country singers. The Country Music Hall of Famer wrote fearlessly about sex and love, cheating husbands, divorce and birth control and sometimes got in trouble with radio programmers for material from which even rock performers once shied away.

Her biggest hits came in the 1960s and ’70s, including “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” “The Pill,” “Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind),” “Rated X” and “You’re Looking at Country.” She was known for appearing in floor-length, wide gowns with elaborate embroidery or rhinestones, many created by her longtime personal assistant and designer Tim Cobb.

Her honesty and unique place in country music was rewarded. She was the first woman ever named entertainer of the year at the genre’s two major awards shows, first by the Country Music Association in 1972 and then by the Academy of Country Music three years later.

“It was what I wanted to hear and what I knew other women wanted to hear, too,”&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/5c993e85d5bd40d8b01a6840c8ecdc78">Lynn told the AP</a>&nbsp;in 2016. “I didn’t write for the men; I wrote for us women. And the men loved it, too.”

In 1969, she released her autobiographical “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” which helped her reach her widest audience yet.

“We were poor but we had love/That’s the one thing Daddy made sure of/He shoveled coal to make a poor man’s dollar,” she sang.

“Coal Miner’s Daughter,” also the title of her 1976 book, was made into a 1980 movie of the same name. Sissy Spacek’s portrayal of Lynn won her an Academy Award and the film was also nominated for best picture.

Long after her commercial peak, Lynn won two Grammys in 2005 for her album “Van Lear Rose,” which featured 13 songs she wrote, including “Portland, Oregon” about a drunken one-night stand. “Van Lear Rose” was a collaboration with rocker Jack White, who produced the album and played the guitar parts.

Born Loretta Webb, the second of eight children, she claimed her birthplace was Butcher Holler, near the coal mining company town of Van Lear in the mountains of east Kentucky. There really wasn’t a Butcher Holler, however. She later told a reporter that she made up the name for the purposes of the song based on the names of the families that lived there.

In “Fist City,” Lynn threatens a hair-pulling fistfight if another woman won’t stay away from her man: “I’m here to tell you, gal, to lay off of my man/If you don’t want to go to Fist City.” That strong-willed but traditional country woman reappears in other Lynn songs. In “The Pill,” a song about sex and birth control, Lynn writes about how she’s sick of being trapped at home to take care of babies: “The feelin’ good comes easy now/Since I’ve got the pill,” she sang.

Rosemary Charlene Freeman, age 89, passed away peacefully at Bridgewater Healthcare Center in Carmel, Indiana on Thursday, September 29, 2022 surrounded by family.

Rosemary was born on July 22, 1933 in Simpson, Kansas to her parents, Marjorie Pfeifer and James Collins. She was the oldest of four children and grew up in the home of her grandparents, Charles and Mattie Pfeiffer. The family first lived on a farm outside of town and later in the town of Simpson where Rosemary graduated from high school.&nbsp; 

She was preceded in death by an infant brother Eldon Wayne Carlton, and husband W. Ronald Freeman. 

She is survived by sister Wanda (Carlton) Barnes of Denver, CO and brother Wesley Carlton of Greensburg, KS.

Rosemary married her high school sweetheart W. Ronald Freeman on June 24, 1952 in Caney, Kansas. 

She accepted Christ as her personal savior as a young adult. She clung to her faith tenaciously and was diligent in “working out her salvation with fear and trembling.”

Early in their marriage Ron and Rosemary lived in several Kansas towns including Minneapolis, Concordia, and Salina, then later. Wichita where they raised their family. For two years in the early 1970s they volunteered as house parents at the Wesleyan Indian Children’s Home in Custer, South Dakota and American Indian Mission in Rapid City, South Dakota. Following their service in South Dakota, they returned to Wichita, Kansas. Later moves for Rosemary included Hillsboro, and Beloit, Kansas; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Carmel, Indiana.

Rosemary was talented in many areas including singing, writing and art. She enjoyed reading and was a “lover of books.” Many of her articles were published in denominational and other Christian publications. She authored and illustrated a book,&nbsp;The Day of the Song, following a trip to visit her daughter’s family during their first term as missionaries in Guatemala.&nbsp; For many years, she wrote, published and distributed a monthly newsletter, “The Kinsfolk Courier,” for family and friends.

Rosemary is survived by her four children: Rhonda Charlene (Robert) Gilbert, Ronald W. (Marilyn) Freeman, Rob J. (Theresa) Freeman, and Randall (Linda) Freeman, fourteen (14) grandchildren, thirty-seven (37) great-grandchildren, and two (2) great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 2022 at Roberts Family Funeral Service, 910 Campbell, Beloit, KS 67420. Viewing will be held at the funeral home from 12-1 p.m.

Interment will follow at the Highland Church Cemetery, 312-382 Lark Road, Glasco, KS 66948.

James “Jim” C. Workman, age 83, of Concordia, KS, left this earthly life on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 surrounded by his family at his home in Concordia, KS.&nbsp; He was born on September 23, 1939 in Centralia, Washington, to Pete and Lizz (Girard) Workman.

Jim attended Centralia, Washington schools while growing up.&nbsp; He married Barbara Ann Chartier on June 25, 1960 in Fairbury, NE.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 2022.

He served in the United States Air Force for four years from 1956-1960 and was honorably discharged.&nbsp; Jim was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Amarillo, TX and Salina, KS, where he met his love of life Barbara in Concordia.

He owned and operated Workman Transport, Inc. for many years until he retired in 2004.

He was a member of the Concordia Moose Lodge #1428.

Jim and Barbara loved to travel the country and he was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan.&nbsp; Most of all he loved spending time with his beloved family and friends.

He is survived by his daughters Mary Walker (Ronnie), Concordia, KS and Crystal Perrin, (Lance Salazar), Concordia, KS; grandchildren Stephanie Ryals (Jerrod), Christopher Walker (Jessica), Colton Halfhide, Ciara Halfhide, Riley Halfhide (Josie) and Ariana Perrin; great-grandchildren, Paxton, Gavyn, Landon and Brooklyn Ryals, Serenity and Peacelyn Walker, Khalani Jo; sister Pat Pollard, Kirkland, WA; brother and sister-in-law Tom and Betty Menor, Poyne, AR; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by a son, James P. “Jimmy” Workman, his parents Pete and Lizz, two sisters, Dreena and Barbara, brother-in-law Rocky Pollard, sister-in-law Pat Miller.

It was Jim’s wishes to be cremated and memorial services will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, Kansas, with Pastor Bob Burns officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the local American Legion Post #76, VFW Post #588, Concordia, KS and McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard, Wichita, KS.

Burial of the cremains will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia.&nbsp; Friends may sign the register book from 1-5 pm, Monday, October 3, 2022 at the funeral home and friends are welcome to stop by the house and visit with the family.&nbsp; Following the graveside, a luncheon will be served at the American Legion, Concordia.

The earth is not flat. That was recognized over 2000 years ago by Eratosthenes in Alexandria, Egypt. He noticed that a flagpole left no shadow in Syene but did leave a shadow in Alexandria. He measured the shadow angle and calculated the circumference of a round earth. He came very close! &nbsp;

He came very close! &nbsp; Those who claim that anatomy alone determines “biological males” are making the same mistake as those who point out the earth is obviously flat. There are many factors involved. And while anatomy is one factor, there are cases where, upon a baby’s birth, the obstetrician cannot declare “it’s a boy” or “it’s a girl” but must say “I’ll get back to you on this” because the anatomy is ambiguous. XX or XY chromosomes are another factor. The Y-chromosome carries the genes that direct development to become a male. Without the Y-chromosome SRY region, a female develops. But there are also exceptions including XO (only the X-chromosome), XXY, XYY, etc. The amount of male testosterone and female estrogen hormones—and their proportions—also vary greatly. Testosterone promotes facial hair, broad shoulders, muscle growth, aggression, etc. It is produced in small quantities in the adrenal glands of both men and women, but in 20 times larger quantity in testes after puberty. Estrogens are produced in female ovaries and in the fat tissue in both males and females. Just look around at the men and women in the population and you will see that there has always been a wide variation among people due to normal variations in hormone balance. Heavier boys who go through puberty have more fat and therefore more estrogen and some may never develop a low pitch voice. Some girls with broader shoulders and more athletic build may have higher testosterone levels, and be more aggressive in sports. This variation has always been there. But “tomboy” girls and effeminate boys have often suffered in our simple-minded society. John Money was a pioneer researcher at the Psychohormonal Research Unit at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. With his medical team, he was able to document and treat many cases where chromosomes, hormones and anatomy varied from "normal.” But he also had cases where very young children were distressed with their assignment—they felt their parents and doctors had made a mistake. They “felt” female when their anatomy was male, or the opposite. In 1955, John Money borrowed the term “gender” for this feeling of being masculine or feminine that was unrelated to who they would be attracted to later after puberty. This feeling of gender was expressed by age six and was permanent; it did not change day-to-day. However, Money did not know if gender identity formed in the brain before or after birth. This question would be answered by Dr. Dick Swaab and his research team in the Netherlands. They followed up on research by Roger Gorski at U.C.L.A. who had injected testosterone into pregnant rats and discovered the female offspring acted male. Gorski then located a region in rat brains that was different between normal male and female rats, but the female rats who had received the testosterone as a late stage fetus had developed a male brain region. Swaab’s team examined brain bank donations from deceased individuals who were both “normal” and transgender and discovered a similar difference.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Today we know that if transgender children receive the surgery and hormone replacement early, they will develop the muscle anatomy, etc. that conforms with their brain gender and can live a normal life, including fair sports participation. But it is very important that such young candidates be carefully screened to separate out other psychological factors unrelated to gender identity. But long before this science of biological differentiation was discovered, ranchers already knew there was a fairly wide range of bulls and cows. When it was time to pick another bull to breed the next season, it was obvious that not all of the potential young bulls were equally masculine. And there were some cows that rejected their calves, and others that had more masculine physical traits and behaviors. It takes time for doctors and biology teachers to update their training, and for biology books to carry this newer science. But it has been 2000 years since we learned the earth is not flat, and many politicians apparently need that longer time to get their message right.&nbsp;&nbsp;John Richard Schrock has trained biology teachers for more than 30 years in Kansas. He also has lectured at 27 universities during 20 trips to China. He holds the distinction of “Faculty Emeritus” at Emporia State University.
