SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas felon who spent over 40-years in prison was in court again Wednesday.

Samuel Neal, 71, Wichita, was charged with 3 counts of criminal discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On Tuesday Police had asked the public for help to locate him.

Just after 12:30a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a shooting in the 1100 block of South Emporia, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo. Officers located a 21-year-old man with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Through the investigation, detectives identified Samuel Neal as a suspect. He is also believed to be the suspect in another shooting on July 9.  Police booked him into the Sedgwick County Jail just after 1p.m. Tuesday on requested charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and parole violations, according to online jail records.

Neal was released from prison in 2019 after a manslaughter conviction on a crime that occurred in 1979, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. His bond is currently $500,000 and he is due back in court on July 24.
