CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — United Methodist delegates are heading into the homestretch of their first legislative gathering in five years — one that appears on track to make historic changes in lifting their church's longstanding bans on same-sex marriage and the ordination of LGBTQ clergy.

After a day off on Sunday, delegates to the General Conference of the United Methodist Church resumed their work Monday and will be meeting all this week before wrapping up their 11-day session on Friday

They've already begun making historic changes: On Thursday,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/united-methodist-disaffiliation-lgbtq-regionalization-samesex-marriage-d429bb838c31f1899dbc48fbddb03197">delegates overwhelmingly endorsed</a>&nbsp;a policy shift that would restructure the worldwide denomination into regional conferences and give the U.S. region, for the first time, the same right as international bodies to modify church rules to fit local situations.

That measure — subject to local ratification votes — is seen as a way the U.S. churches could have LGBTQ ordination and same-sex marriage while the more conservative overseas areas, particularly the large and fast-growing churches of Africa, could maintain those bans.

But whether that measure maintains church unity remains to be seen. The General Conference comes as the American portion of the United Methodist Church, long the nation's third-largest denomination, has shrunk considerably.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/united-methodist-congregations-leaving-lgbtq-bans-dbd315f329e4cfec4ba78916668ab50b">One-quarter of its U.S. churches left</a>&nbsp;between 2019 and 2023 amid conservative dismay over the church's failure to enforce its LGBTQ bans amid widespread defiance.

A proposal to overturn those bans is headed to the delegates this week, and progressives are optimistic that they have the votes to realize their long-held dream.

Bishop Karen Oliveto of the Mountain Sky Episcopal Area, the first openly lesbian bishop ordained in the church, said the tenor of the current conference is positive.

“The delegates are listening to each other, learning from each other, really providing a foundation for the work this week,” she said. “There have been hard conversations, but again this tone that we’re in this together. And we have a witness to make to the world that’s unified even in the midst of cultural differences.”

The denomination has debated homosexuality for more than half a century. Its Book of Discipline bans “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” from the clergy and forbids clergy from presiding at same-sex marriages. It also forbids church funding of any advocacy for the “acceptance of homosexuality.”

But legislative committees last week overwhelmingly approved several proposals liberalizing the church’s stance on sexuality. They included one committee that voted 43-9 to overturn the ban on LGBTQ clergy.

The delegates will also vote on a new set of Social Principles — a wholesale revision of an existing set of non-binding statements — which also received overwhelming committee approval last week. The new version omits the previous version's declaration that homosexuality is “incompatible with Christian teaching." And it defines marriage as a sacred covenant between “two people of faith,” without specifying gender.

Such changes could portend a further fragmentation of the international church. Delegates last week approved the departure of a small but notable part of the body — about 30 churches in Russia and other former Soviet countries, where conservative views on LGBTQ issues are strong.

Some are proposing that African and other churches be given the same chance that U.S. churches recently had to disaffiliate under favorable terms, including U.S. churches that missed the earlier deadline to do so, but a committee vote recommended against such measures.

Opponents say they already have mechanisms to depart, as some have recently done, but proponents say existing rules are burdensome.

Jerry Kulah of the advocacy group Africa Initiative said that while it will be up to individual conferences in Africa to decide whether to stay or leave the denomination, he believes it's time to leave.

“We cannot remain in this marriage,” he said. “We can’t be one church preaching different gospels.”

A large majority of African bishops, while affirming their opposition to LGBTQ ordination or marriage, have said in a joint statement they are committed to remaining in the United Methodist Church.

The denomination had until recently been the third largest in the United States, present in almost every county. But its 5.4 million U.S. membership in 2022 is expected to drop once the 2023 departures are factored in.

The denomination also counts 4.6 million members in other countries, mainly in Africa, though earlier estimates have been higher.

Conservative advocacy groups say U.S. churches that didn't meet the 2023 deadline should have the option of disaffiliating, too — along with the more than 7,000 that have already done so.

The denomination also will be debating policy stances regarding fossil fuels and other issues as well as voting on major budget cuts to denominational programs, reflective of losing thousands of congregations.

The Rev. Tracy Cox, lead pastor of First United Methodist Church in Pittsburgh, said she’s cautiously hopeful for changes to the rules on ordination and marriage. The congregation, which has long been LGBTQ-affirming, held a commissioning service on April 14 for those attending the General Conference.

“If you are called by God to be an ordained elder or deacon, no church, no institution should step in that way,” Cox said. “And as far as marriage goes, when somebody falls in love with someone, we need to be able to help them to raise a family or to be a family in the community where they’re going to serve.”

Added Tracy Merrick, a member of the congregation and a delegate: “It will say to the world about us that we really stand behind our statement that we are a church of open hearts, open minds, and open doors.”

General Conference: United Methodists prepare for votes on lifting LGBTQ bans

Kansas Mobility reminding the public May is 'Bike Month'

SEDGWICK COUNTY–A 19-year-old woman accused in a shooting death made her first court appearance Friday

Amunique Cavitt, 19 of Wichita, was charged with 1st degree murder, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Around noon April 23, police responded to the 1400 block of Minnesota Avenue in Wichita following reports of a shooting., according to police spokesman Andrew Ford. First responders found 34-year-old&nbsp; Norman E. Carter III with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

Responding officers immediately started life-saving measures until Sedgwick County EMS arrived and transported Carter to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead at 1:01 p.m, according to Ford.

Police detained a person of interest in their investigation and later booked 19-year-old Amunique Cavitt into jail.&nbsp;Her bond is one-million dollars, according to the district attorney's office. Her next court date is May 10.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Junction City Police and Chapman Police were in pursuit of a 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by&nbsp;Jordan David Rhynes, 28, Fort RIley, on Rain Road near 2900 Avenue just south of Kansas 18.

The motorcycle struck a Chapman Police Department 2020 Dodge&nbsp; Durango driven by&nbsp;James Samuel Reynolds, 45, Chapman.

EMS transported Rhynes to Stormont Vail in Junction City. Reynolds was not injured.&nbsp; Rhynes was booked into jail just before 6p.m. Friday on requested charges of reckless driving, maximum speed limits and flee or attempt to elude, according to online jail records.

Kan. man injured after crash with police SUV moved from hospital to jail

SHAWNEE COUNTY– A suspect is in custody after fleeing from law enforcement in a stolen vehicle on Tuesday.

Just after&nbsp;7:30 a.m., police responded to a reported stolen vehicle in the 1800 block of SE Ohio Avenue in Topeka.

Officers located the vehicle and initiated a car stop. The driver fled. Officers remained in the area and a short while later located the vehicle unoccupied near SE 3rd and Lime Street. As a result of the investigation, a suspect was later located in a residence in the area and was taken into custody.

As a result of the investigation, Feliciano J. Anguiano IV, 22, of Topeka was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges Flee or attempt to elude; operate a stolen vehicle and Theft &gt;$1,500&lt;$25,000 From Motor Vehicle.

 </figure>SHAWNEE COUNTY– A suspect is in custody after fleeing from law enforcement in a stolen vehicle on Tuesday.Just after&nbsp;7:30 a.m., police responded to a reported stolen vehicle in the 1800 block of SE Ohio Avenue in Topeka.Officers located the vehicle and initiated a car stop. The driver fled. Officers remained in the area and a short while later located the vehicle unoccupied near SE 3rd and Lime Street. As a result of the investigation, a suspect was later located in a residence in the area and was taken into custody.As a result of the investigation, Feliciano J. Gilbert Peter Hecker – age 88 of Hays, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Salina Regional Health Center.

He was born December 5, 1935, in Park Kansas to Martin M. and Frances (Ziegler) Hecker.&nbsp; Gilbert married Caron A. (Stevenson) on January 17, 1959, in Oakley, Kansas.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on December 8, 2017.

He was a manager of Hardman Lumber Yard in Russell, Kansas for 16 years until he and his wife moved to Hays, Kansas in 1986.&nbsp;

Gilbert attended a country school for two years then went to school in Oakley, Kansas and was a 1954 graduate of Oakley High School.&nbsp; He also attended Fort Hays State University after his military service.&nbsp; He was a veteran of the US Army and spent most of his two years in France.&nbsp; Gilbert moved to Homestead of Russell in 2023, he was a member of Saint Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Gilbert is survived by his sons, Robert Hecker, Watkins, CO; Douglas Hecker, Russell, KS; his daughter, Jacqulen “Jackie” Postier and husband, Lowel, Inman, KS; his brother, Alvin Hecker, Tampa, FL; his sister-in-law, Irene Rose, Oakley, KS; his grandchildren, Jesse Postier; Amanda Postier; Jordan Hecker (Courtney); Taylor Vasquez (Leo Jr.); Jonathon Hecker; and his great grandchild, Benjamin Hecker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Frances; his wife, Caron; his brothers, Virgil Hecker; and Jimmy Hecker; his sisters, Valerie Devers; and Darlene Kitendaugh.

Cremation has taken place, and the family will have a private inurnment at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Hays, Kansas at a later date.

Priscilla Hoffpauir and Charles Slothower, seniors at Central High School, were selected as winners of the Rudd Scholarship. They join 43 other Kansas high school seniors who were chosen through a rigorous selection process that considers not only their academic achievements but also their life stories and contributions to their communities.

“As a LINK Leader, she helped establish a safe and welcoming place for our freshmen by planning activities to get them involved and feel a sense of belonging,” said Katrina Paradis, English teacher at Central High School (CHS). “As a cheerleader, she embodies that Mustang spirit rallying crowds with her smile and infectious enthusiasm. I marvel at how she balances her academics and her extra-curricular activities with such grace and poise.”

Hoffpauir will attend Kansas State University to major in biology and pre-medicine. She points to extracurricular experiences as growth opportunities. 

“Future Health Professionals Club (HOSA), National Honor Society, Student Council and more have helped me to grow my character and leadership,” said Hoffpauir. “My Certified Nurse Aide class and my chemistry class taught me how to learn from my failures and helped my work ethic grow.”

She credits her focus and motivation to consistent attention to her goals and blessings. “I try to look on the bright side and learn from my failures so that I can achieve success in the future," Hoffpauir said. “I am inspired by my family because of how hard working they are and how they strive to do better every single day.”

Slothower's clarity reduces distraction and helps him forge a straight path to his goals. 

“Ever since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to chase my dreams and do whatever it takes to make them come true,” said Slothower. “I have this inner drive to always do good.”

“Family support is what has gotten me to where I am," Slothower said. “My parents have helped me in any pursuit and always encouraged me.” On football, wrestling and tennis teams Slothower has learned about grit and determination

. “Wrestling taught me the most. You’re part of a team but you step out on the mat all by yourself," Slothower said.

Hard work and self-discipline are strengths&nbsp;Slothower has mastered.

 “He’s taken several hours of college classes while playing three sports and working a job,” said Ryan Modin, CHS history and government teacher. “Charles is so goal-oriented and knows what he wants to do in college and for a career. He has a positive outlook and doesn’t let a setback keep him down.”

Slothower credits Mr. Hair’s engineering classes and K-State Salina classes, taken during high school, as experiences that helped him achieve the scholarship. He will attend Kansas State University to study mechanical engineering and wants to work with the Ford Motor Company. “Nothing is out of reach if you want to go get it.”

The Rudd Scholarship provides full-ride scholarships covering tuition, fees, books, supplies, and room and board for the duration of the recipients' undergraduate studies. Additionally, scholars benefit from mentorship, networking opportunities, and professional development resources.

Salina Central High School students accept full-ride Rudd scholarships 

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an arrest.

Just after 4p.m. Wednesday, Cpl. Jon Sumner of the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office was on active patrol when he encountered a suspicious vehicle parked directly within the middle of the Kansas and Kansas 99 intersection south of Alma, according to a media release. 

&nbsp;Sumner observed the driver slouched over the steering wheel and summoned EMS. Realizing the vehicle was running and still in drive&nbsp; Sumner immediately returned to his patrol vehicle and gently set his push bar in direct contact with the suspect vehicle grill in a head to head to prevent it from rolling off road, into traffic or suddenly being able to flee or elude. 

Sumner roused awake and made contact with the driver, identified as 25-year-old Dustin Marquarndt of Dwight, Kansas. Marquarndt was asked to step out of the vehicle after&nbsp; Sumner noticed signs of impairment and the presence of a firearm. 

Assisting the driver from the vehicle, Sumner observed illegal narcotics in plain view. The subsequent lawful probable cause search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of approximately 1 gram of Methamphetamine, 4 grams of Cocaine &amp; other associated illicit narcotics paraphernalia. 

Due to the totality of circumstances &amp; objective reasonableness to include the driver exhibiting signs of impairment, Cpl Sumner placed Mr. Marquarndt under arrest without incident transported him to the county jail where he was booked in on requested charges of possession of opiates/narcotic or certain stimulant, possession of marijuana, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, possession of firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, illegal parking on highway and not wearing his seat belt. 

Upon driver refusal to voluntarily submit to chemical testing, Sumner applied for, was granted and then executed a lawful blood draw search warrant upon the accused.&nbsp;

Kan. man jailed after he passed out in running vehicle at intersection

Noeline Carla Miller-Chestnut July 23, 1948 ~ April 22, 2024

Noeline Carla Miller-Chestnut, age 75, of Salina, Kansas, passed away on April 22, 2024, at home. She was born on July 23, 1948, in Salina, Kansas, the daughter of the late Katherine Lucille Brubaker (Buttermore) and Carl Coleman Miller.

Noeline was a hard working woman of strength and compassion, known for her kindness and generosity. She was a graduate of Salina High School, Class of 1965, and went on to work at several nursing homes as dietary cooks, then later at REMA Bakeware in the production department and finally at Russell-Stover Candy in Abilene before retiring.

Noeline fell in love with Chet Chestnut and married on June 25, 1988. They enjoyed almost 25 years of cherished married life together. Noeline was dedicated to taking care of her family and was an amazing wife, Mom and Grandma. She enjoyed camping, fishing, playing pinochle with family, working in her garden, and listening to audio books.

Noeline is survived by her loving daughter, Tina Zahn (Nathan) of Wichita, KS; stepdaughters Tracy Chestnut and Heather Chestnut, both of Omaha, NE; stepson Darryl Chestnut, of Omaha, NE. She is also survived by her grandchildren Natlie and Brandon Zahn, as well as step-grandchildren Dwayne Orth, Kit Chestnut, Christopher Driscoll, Tyler and Nicole Petri, Brittney Buckingham, Matthew, Wyatt and Audrey Chestnut and Teah Dunlop, and 12 step-great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Anita Morris (Kevin), of Salina, and brother David Miller of Evansville, IN and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Noeline was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chester L. Chestnut, on March 17, 2013, an infant son Daniel, as well as her brother, Carl Coleman Miler II, and sister, Karen Sneary. She leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Noeline's life will be held on May 4, 2024, at First Church of the Nazarene on South Ohio Street in Salina, KS. Friends and family are invited to join in remembering Noeline and offering their final farewells. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice in memory of Noeline are greatly appreciated.

Noeline C. Miller-Chestnut

WICHITA, KAN. – A Kansas man made his initial appearance Wednesday before a federal judge following an indictment for defrauding clients of his accounting firm.

According to court documents, Quintin Flanagin, 43, of Colby is charged with seven counts of wire fraud, four counts of bank fraud, two counts of false statements, and six counts of money laundering.

Flanagin, a certified public accountant (CPA), is part owner of the accounting firm, Williams Consulting. The owners of Diamond M. Farms in Thomas County contracted the firm to perform CPA duties for the company. Flanagin acted as signatory for Diamond M Farms bank accounts and prepared payroll.

Flanagin created a fictitious business called Middle Finger Ranch and added the company name to his personal bank account. Between December 2021 and August 2022, the defendant allegedly wrote multiple checks and initiated wire transfers totaling approximately $409,710 from Diamond M. Farms to Middle Finger Ranch under the guise of being payments for farm operations.

In 2021, Flanagin hired a construction company to build him a new house. The transaction records indicate he paid the contractor from the Middle Finger Ranch bank account within days of the funds being transferred from Diamond M. Farms.

The defendant made his initial court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Gwynne E. Birzer of the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the case.

NW Kan. CPA, creator of ‘Middle Finger Ranch,’ accused of bank fraud

CRAWFORD COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a crash on a scooter.

Just before 1a.m. Monday, police on routine patrol in the area of West Martin Avenue and South Georgia Street in Pittsburg, Kansas, observed a subject riding a scooter in that area, according to a media release.

The driver of the scooter attempted to turn onto Martin Avenue from Georgia Street but failed to navigate the turn and wrecked at that intersection. 

The officer made contact with the driver, who was later identified as 32-year-old John D. Robertson Jr., of Frontenac, Kansas. 

However, at the time of the initial contact, the driver provided a false name to the investigating officer. While investigating the wreck, the officer discovered the scooter had been previously reported as stolen out of Pittsburg. 

The scooter was later towed away from the scene. Robertson, who reported being injured as a result of the wreck, was transported by Crawford County EMS to Ascension Via Christi Hospital’s emergency department for treatment. 

Once released from the hospital, Robertson was taken into custody and was transported to the jail at the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office for booking. Articles of contraband were located during the subsequent search of the driver incident to the arrest. Additionally, upon arrival at the jail, the driver’s identity was verified.

Robertson was booked into jail on requested charges of felony possession of stolen property, felony interference with law enforcement, felony possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Mr. Robertson is currently being held without bond.

 </figure>CRAWFORD COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a crash on a scooter.Just before 1a.m. Monday, police on routine patrol in the area of West Martin Avenue and South Georgia Street in Pittsburg, Kansas, observed a subject riding a scooter in that area, according to a media release.The driver of the scooter attempted to turn onto Martin Avenue from Georgia Street but failed to navigate the turn and wrecked at that intersection. The officer made contact with the driver, who was later identified as 32-year-old John D. Robertson Jr., of Frontenac, Kansas. However, at the time of the initial contact, the driver provided a false name to the investigating officer. While investigating the wreck, the officer discovered the scooter had been previously reported as stolen out of Pittsburg. The scooter was later towed away from the scene. Robertson, who reported being injured as a result of the wreck, was transported by Crawford County EMS to Ascension Via Christi Hospital’s emergency department for treatment. Once released from the hospital, Robertson was taken into custody and was transported to the jail at the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office for booking. Articles of contraband were located during the subsequent search of the driver incident to the arrest. Additionally, upon arrival at the jail, the driver’s identity was verified.Robertson was booked into jail on requested charges of felony possession of stolen property, felony interference with law enforcement, felony possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Mr. Robertson is currently being held without bond.

She is a devoted teacher, a community advocate, and a talented writer in every genre. She is undoubtedly one of Kansas's brightest literary stars, and Salina is lucky to call her their own," Brimhall said.&nbsp;

In the decades since Patricia Traxler moved to Salina from San Diego, she has been active in the cultural life of the city. The founder and longtime director of Salina's Spring Poetry Series, she also taught at Kansas Wesleyan University for more than three decades. Traxler is the author of four volumes of poetry (most recently, Naming the Fires); a novel, Blood; and a short-story collection, In the Skin.

Traxler is currently working on a book of essays, Don't Ask Me, and a volume of her collected poems, as yet untitled.

Around noon Tuesday, police responded to the 1400 block of Minnesota Avenue following reports of a shooting. First responders found 34-year-old&nbsp; Norman E. Carter III with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. 

Police detained a person of interest in their investigation and later booked 19-year-old Amunique Cavitt into jail on <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=747819">requested charges </a>of first-degree murder, according to the county arrest report.

&nbsp;Anyone with information about the incident or who may have video surveillance footage from either doorbell or garage cameras is asked to call the Wichita Police Homicide Investigations Unit at 316-268-4407. You can remain anonymous and contact Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.

&nbsp;Gregory "Greg" D. Hood July 3, 1946 ~ April 20, 2024

Gregory "Greg" D. Hood, age 77, of Concordia, KS, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at his home in Concordia, KS surrounded by family.&nbsp; He was born on July 3, 1946 in Concordia, KS to Rolland &amp; Lolita (Miller) Hood.

Greg attended Concordia schools until age 11. His family then moved to Italy in 1957 to assist in bringing supermarkets to Europe. Greg attended the Laysin American School in Switzerland and Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.&nbsp;&nbsp;Greg served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1967 to 1971.&nbsp;&nbsp;He attended the Eastern European Language Program in Syracuse University in New York. He then attended the USA Security Service training at Goodfella Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas. He was assigned to the 6912th&nbsp;Security Squadron at Templehol AFB in West Berlin, Germany as a Russian voice interpreter operator. The military required them to travel under the radar in civilian clothes to Germany.&nbsp;&nbsp;After his service in the military Greg moved back to Concordia. In 1973 Greg married Sally Alderson. They were parents to Shawn, Chandra, and Garett.&nbsp;

Greg was a lifelong general contractor, working for his uncle Woodrow Hood/Hood Construction as Vice President then eventually owner. He finished his career out with Coonrod &amp; Associates.&nbsp;&nbsp;Among the various local projects, he was involved with were, the First United Methodist Church, UMB Bank, the Frank Carlson Library, Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Super 8 Motel and the Parish Hall for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church to name just a few.

He was active in the Jayhusker Racing Assoc. and USAC Midget Racing.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a member of American Legion Post #76, Moose Lodge #1428 &amp; VFW Post #588.

Greg had a love for motorsports. He followed in his father’s footsteps taking up racing which led to years of running a ¾ midget and eventually owning a USAC midget team. Greg and Jon Thurston designed and built the 750 ¾ midget that he won multiple features along with forming “Two Hoods Racing”. He always dreamt about running the Belleville Midgets Nationals.&nbsp;&nbsp;Unfortunately, he didn’t accomplish that, but did with his son along with racing in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Oklahoma, Arizona, Wisconsin, etc.

He is survived by his children, Shawn Hood, Concordia, KS; Chandra Hood, Gisborne, New Zealand &amp; Garett Hood (Stephanie), Concordia, KS; grandchildren, Bryce Young, Cameron Young &amp; Beck Hood; great grandson, Jhett Young; several cousins, and a host of other family and friends.

It was Greg’s wishes to be cremated and a service celebrating his life will be at 1:00 pm, Friday, May 10, 2024, at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia.&nbsp;&nbsp;Military honors will be conducted at the services by McConnell AFB, American Legion Post #76 &amp; VFW Post #588.&nbsp;&nbsp;Following the services, family and friends will gather at the American Legion Post #76 in Concordia. The family welcomes flowers or memorials to the American Legion Post #76 in care of the funeral home. His children would enjoy receiving any written stories about Greg from those attending his celebration of life.&nbsp;&nbsp;Friends may sign the register book from 9 am to 8 pm, with the family greeting friends from 6-7 pm on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at the funeral home. He was assigned to the 6912th&nbsp;Security Squadron at Templehol AFB in West Berlin, Germany as a Russian voice interpreter operator. The military required them to travel under the radar in civilian clothes to Germany.&nbsp;&nbsp;After his service in the military Greg moved back to Concordia. In 1973 Greg married Sally Alderson. They were parents to Shawn, Chandra, and Garett.&nbsp;Greg was a lifelong general contractor, working for his uncle Woodrow Hood/Hood Construction as Vice President then eventually owner. He finished his career out with Coonrod &amp; Associates.&nbsp;&nbsp;Among the various local projects, he was involved with were, the First United Methodist Church, UMB Bank, the Frank Carlson Library, Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Super 8 Motel and the Parish Hall for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church to name just a few.He was active in the Jayhusker Racing Assoc. and USAC Midget Racing.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a member of American Legion Post #76, Moose Lodge #1428 &amp; VFW Post #588.Greg had a love for motorsports. He followed in his father’s footsteps taking up racing which led to years of running a ¾ midget and eventually owning a USAC midget team. Greg and Jon Thurston designed and built the 750 ¾ midget that he won multiple features along with forming “Two Hoods Racing”. He always dreamt about running the Belleville Midgets Nationals.&nbsp;&nbsp;Unfortunately, he didn’t accomplish that, but did with his son along with racing in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Oklahoma, Arizona, Wisconsin, etc.He is survived by his children, Shawn Hood, Concordia, KS; Chandra Hood, Gisborne, New Zealand &amp; Garett Hood (Stephanie), Concordia, KS; grandchildren, Bryce Young, Cameron Young &amp; Beck Hood; great grandson, Jhett Young; several cousins, and a host of other family and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents.It was Greg’s wishes to be cremated and a service celebrating his life will be at 1:00 pm, Friday, May 10, 2024, at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia.&nbsp;&nbsp;Military honors will be conducted at the services by McConnell AFB, American Legion Post #76 &amp; VFW Post #588.&nbsp;&nbsp;Following the services, family and friends will gather at the American Legion Post #76 in Concordia. KANSAS CITY (AP) —Thousands of United Methodists are gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina, for their big denominational meeting, known as General Conference.

It’s a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/congregations-leaving-united-methodist-church-lgbtq-bans-70b8c89ea49174597f4548c249bab24f">much-anticipated gathering</a>. Typically it is held every four years, but church leaders delayed the 2020 gathering until now due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, the 11-day gathering runs from April 23 to May 3. Among those assembling are hundreds of voting delegates — the United Methodists from across the globe who were elected to represent their regional church body — though as many as one-quarter of international delegates are not confirmed as able to attend. The delegates, half clergy and half lay Methodists, are the decision makers at General Conference.

General Conference — the only entity that can speak for the entire denomination — is a business meeting where delegates set policy, pass budgets and address other church-wide matters. It’s the only body that can amend the United Methodist Book of Discipline, which includes church law. It also includes Social Principles, which are non-binding declarations on social and ethical issues. There’s worship and fellowship, too.

IS THERE SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT THIS YEAR’S MEETING?

Yes. This will be the first General Conference since more than&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/united-methodist-congregations-leaving-lgbtq-bans-dbd315f329e4cfec4ba78916668ab50b">7,600 mostly conservative congregations left</a>&nbsp;the United Methodist Church between 2019 and 2023 because the denomination essentially stopped enforcing its bans on same-sex marriage and having “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” serving as clergy and bishops.

WILL THE GENERAL CONFERENCE LIFT THOSE LGBTQ-RELATED BANS THIS YEAR?

It’s possible. The delegates in Charlotte are expected to vote on whether to eliminate them. Similar efforts have failed in years past, but with the election of more progressive delegates and the departure of many conservatives, supporters of removing the bans are optimistic.

WHAT OTHER KEY ISSUES ARE UP FOR CONSIDERATION?

—&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/united-methodists-schism-disaffiliation-lgbtq-44fd14d471124d23e1fd5677a8f2b1d9">Disaffiliations</a>: The rules that allowed U.S. congregations to leave between 2019 and 2023. It allowed them to leave with their properties, held in trust for the denomination, under friendlier-than-normal legal terms. Some want similar conditions for international churches and for U.S. churches that missed the 2023 deadline.

—Regionalization: A proposal to restructure the denomination into regional conferences around the world, rather than having distinct names for U.S. and other jurisdictions. It would define the role of regions more precisely and put American congregations into their own regional body. Under this proposal, all regions would be able to adapt church policies to their local contexts, including those on marriage and ordination.

—Budgets: Because of all the disaffiliations, the conference will vote on a much-reduced budget proposal for the coming years.

New York Area Bishop Thomas Bickerton, president of the denomination’s Council of Bishops, addressed the recent schism head-on in feisty remarks during Tuesday's opening worship, which included music and Communion.

Bickerton spoke of his recent visit to a Texas conference that had lost more than half its churches and said those remaining were committed to rebuilding the church. He said those at the General Conference should be doing the same – not continuing the controversy.

“Are you committed to the revitalization of the United Methodist Church?” Bickerton said to applause. “Are you here to work for a culture marked by compassion, courage, and companionship? … If you can’t agree to that, what are you doing here anyway? Maybe, just maybe, you’re in the wrong place.”

He alluded to criticism of the denomination during the disaffiliation debates and said it was holding on to its core beliefs.

“Don’t you tell us that we don’t believe in Scripture,” he said. “Don’t you tell us that we don’t believe in the doctrine of the church. And Lord have mercy, don’t tell us that we don’t believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. … We have got to rebuild the church and we’ve got to do it together.”

Though thousands of Methodists with be attending the conference, there are only 862 official voting delegates, from the following regions of the church:

No. As of last week, only about three-quarters of international delegates were confirmed as able to attend, the Commission on the General Conference reported Thursday. The other quarter includes 27 delegates unable to get visas or passports, others who couldn’t attend for various reasons, and 62 delegates still unconfirmed. African groups have strongly criticized denominational officials, faulting them for delays in providing necessary paperwork and information and raising questions about whether&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/methodists-lgbtq-samesex-marriage-conservatives-africa-1319aea6e1d2ad8755a905a8c4b1bf79">African conferences</a>&nbsp;will accept voting results from the conference.

That varies widely, but those long active in the movement to repeal LGBTQ bans are focused strongly on the conference.
