I have always been proud of the bipartisan heritage of Kansas politicians.

We have had plenty of 
disagreements over the years, just ask any of us. But there have always 
been moments of bipartisanship on behalf of the state and the nation. 
Political disagreement is part of our system of government, and 
constructive partisanship has been a hallmark of our great state.

Think of the examples of 
such leadership: Dwight Eisenhower, Bob Dole, Nancy Kassebaum, the 
Dockings, Kathleen Sebelius, John Carlin, Mike Hayden, Jim Slattery, 
Dennis Moore and many other state and federal leaders. These folks had 
strong beliefs and deeply held principles, but they generally put good 
government first and foremost, well above blind adherence to any 
political party or narrow agenda.

They understood the basic 
truth of our government, that so many have now forgotten. The only way 
to achieve real progress for the citizens of Kansas, and the country, is
 to work collaboratively across party lines, achieve results and not 
engage in any form of blind partisanship for its own sake.

No one wins when politics 
becomes continuous personal attacks on rivals. The point of politics is 
to govern, not to slander one’s opponents and debase oneself.

I am not a Trump supporter
 and I hope, not unsurprisingly, that Biden wins. If you’re reading this
 and thinking, “he’s a hypocrite,” let me remind you that I have 
publicly supported some Republicans nationally for Congress over the 
past many years. I also worked with Sens. Kassebaum and Dole and other 
Republicans on defense issues impacting Kansas, and specifically general
 aviation product liability and related tort reform issues helping the 
Kansas aviation industry.

And I would be the first to admit that Democrats do not have a perfect record.

But what we see from 
President Trump is not merely civil, or even heated, disagreement over 
public policy. Another four years of Trump is another four years of 
chaos, dishonor and corruption from the president and much of his team. 
In recent days, where legitimate reports have indicated he has <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/09/trump-americans-who-died-at-war-are-losers-and-suckers/615997/">called our fallen soldiers “suckers” and “losers,”</a> I think enough is enough.

I am curious if Trump 
thinks that Bob Dole is a loser or sucker because he was so seriously 
injured defending America against the Nazis? After all, he said John 
McCain was not a war hero because he was captured in Vietnam. Partisans 
can disagree over America’s role in the world, but no one wants to be a 
laughingstock. President Trump ought to make us ashamed. We are 
ridiculed by the world and the butt of jokes from our own allies. His 
indefensible behavior has weakened America.

What is most troubling to 
me is the failure of so many Republicans, especially in Kansas, to speak
 truth to power and to call out this outrageous and un-American 
behavior.

Regardless of party 
affiliation, our state has always been known for calling it like it is, 
even if it meant taking on one’s own party leaders. William Allen White,
 the publisher of the Emporia Gazette, <a href="https://www.kshs.org/p/william-allen-white-s-1924-gubernatorial-campaign/13257">fought the Klu Klux Klan</a> in the 1920s at his own personal peril. He led by example.

Where are today’s independent thinkers in Kansas?

I know because I am a 
Democrat, you might not listen to me if you’re a Republican. But there 
were times when I called out my own party: on Vietnam, on excessive 
spending and racking up debt, and on many agricultural issues where the 
Republican side was on the right side of Kansas farmers.

It’s time for all of us, 
and especially our Kansas Republican leaders, to remember our proud 
history, do and say what is right, and stand up for the best principles 
of America.

OPINION: Kansas, and the country, must return to ‘constructive partisanship’

LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) — A mostly Republican state council voted Friday to extend Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s emergency declaration providing services to combat the coronavirus in Kansas, but only after language was added clarifying that the governor doesn’t intend to use her authority to close businesses as she did in the spring.

The State Finance Council’s unanimous vote came after a lengthy, contentious meeting during which Kelly, a Democrat, and the GOP members accused each other of playing politics with the declaration.

The resolution, which had been scheduled to expire Tuesday, will now be in effect until at least Oct. 31, when Kelly could seek another extension.

Kelly and Adjutant General David Weishaar warned before the vote that letting the declaration expire would stop the state from providing many services, including the delivery of personal protective equipment and assistance with community-based testing.

Republican members insisted on stipulating that the extension had to clarify that Kelly would not close businesses as she did in April.

Senate Majority Leader Jim Denning, a Republican from Overland Park, said conditions have changed since the early days of the pandemic and that residents need to know the governor’s and lawmakers’ intentions to “calm everything down.”

“We need to let the folks back home, the businesses, know that we have no intention of shutting down and if there’s a hot spot, the local folks will handle that hot spot. ... They’re not comfortable right now, they’ve lived through a nightmare. And we need to give the some common sense assurance,” he said.

Kelly said repeatedly during the meeting that she would not order businesses to close again because state and health officials have better data, information and procedures than they did in the spring and most businesses had cooperated with efforts to slow the virus.

When GOP members continued to push for new language in the resolution, Kelly accused them of using the issue for political gain in an election year, rather than ensuring the state can continue to provide services without interruption.

“There is so much at stake here,” she said. “Please do not let your ideology or your dislike for me as governor or the fact that I’m a Democrat (affect the vote). Please, let’s vote for the people, let’s not vote for politics.”

At a news conference after the meeting, House Speaker Ron Ryckman Jr. said the inserted language was important.

“We’ve got to a situation where we’re picking winners and losers, determined who was essential and who wasn’t, allowing a lot of our large stores remain open when our small ones couldn’t. We couldn’t have that repeated,” Ryckman said.

Some Republicans accused Kelly of breaking rules by vetoing a motion that sought to add different language to the declaration.

Republican Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who attended the news conference, said he’s “sure there will be a large group of lawyers” looking into whether Kelly’s veto was legal.

As of Friday, Kansas health officials had reported 48,386 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 511 deaths from the disease since the start of the pandemic.

Topeka — The two hour State Finance Council meeting lasted much longer than expected. The republican members of the committee forced the governor to include language in the declaration that confirms she would not close businesses again.

&nbsp;The language written during a recess by the governor's attorney Clay Britton said, "Any restrictions regarding closure of businesses in the Kansas Emergency Management Act remain in place to the extent described in the Kansas Emergency Management Act and it is the governors intention not to use her authority to close businesses."

With that language, the council voted unanimously to extend the declaration until October 15.&nbsp; It was set to expire on Tuesday.

 When asked for her vote, Senator Susan Wagle criticized the governor on how she chaired the meeting and "broke rules."

Despite refusing the suggestion earlier Friday, Kelly said she is comfortable including such language. The committee went into recess until just after 1p.m. to give the state's chief counsel time to draft language for consideration.

The discussion centered around asking the governor to include language in the declaration that would prevent Kelly from shutting down business again. The governor said she does not intend to shut down businesses again and refused to include the language.&nbsp;

Senate president Susan Wagle wanted to delay the vote until the council could meet in person on Monday afternoon. Not all members of the council were able to fit that meeting into their schedules. Wagle then suggested the council return at 3p.m. Friday after getting legal assistance on the discussion.

After several attempts to vote on various motions, the governor asked the council to&nbsp; vote for the people and not play politics.&nbsp; She then asked for a 30 minute recess and return at noon.

Kelly warned Thursday that if the extension isn't granted, Kansans will not be able to access services they need to ensure their health and safety.

Topeka, Kan. (AP) — Kansas will face a dramatic reduction in coronavirus-related services that would put residents’ lives at risk if a state council does not approve extending a state disaster declaration, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said Thursday.

The State Finance Council, which is dominated by Republicans, is scheduled to meet Friday to discuss extending the declaration before it expires on Tuesday.

Failure to extend the declaration will prevent the state from leveraging critical resources, Kelly said at a news conference.

“In other words, these nine members of the State Finance Council will effectively decide if the nearly 3 million people living in our state will be able to access the tools they need to stay healthy, stay fed, stay in their homes as the virus continues to rage around us,” the Democratic governor said.

Kansas Adjutant General David Weishaar, who oversees the state’s emergency response, detailed how several emergency agencies have provided services throughout the pandemic, which he said would end if the declaration is not extended.

He said extending the declaration would ensure “uninterrupted deployment” of several services, such personal protective equipment, meals packed for food banks, and community-based testing. And the state emergency command center, which is currently staffed seven days a week, would be cut back to a staff duty officer answering calls if the declaration is not extended, he said

Kelly said Deborah Birx, a top coronavirus advisor for the White House, told her and several local health and elected officials Thursday that Kansas remains a red zone for coronavirus cases and is eighth in the nation in positivity in COVID-19 cases. Birx urged the officials to impose mitigation efforts, which she said is the only way to contain the virus until a vaccine is approved.

A spokeswoman for Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle, a Republican, said she would not respond to the governor’s comment until Friday’s meeting.

Kelly said forcing state and local governments to further reduce their budgets when revenue has already dropped will hamper the state’s coronavirus response and make Kansas more vulnerable in future crises.

“We will need significantly more support from our federal partners to protect our institutions from drastic and damaging cuts,” Kelly said.

Earlier Thursday, Kelly testified remotely before the U.S. House Financial Services Committee that the state faces “drastic and damaging” cuts if the federal government does not provide more funds in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kansas has already received $1.2 billion in aid, which generally must be used for pandemic-related needs, not to help overall budgets.

Kan. emergency declaration will continue for another month



Richard Lee Reinecker, 64, of Wichita, Kansas passed away Tuesday, September 8th, 2020 at his residence..

Rick was born in McPherson, Kansas on August 23, 1956, a son of Gene Hayden and Joan Lee (Edwards) Reinecker.

Rick attended Roosevelt Elementary School, McPherson Junior High School and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1974.

He was a member of Church of the Brethren.

Through the years Rick worked for Mahaney Construction Company, Wichita, Kansas as a foreman, Cruthers Construction, Wichita, Kansas as a carpenter and a mechanic for Malm Automotive, McPherson, Kansas.

Rick enjoyed listening to blue's music, fishing, grilling, fireworks, KU Basketball, Rick was a diehard KC Chiefs Football fan, loved his grandkids and spending time with his friends and family.

He is survived by his children, Dylan Reinecker, of Wichita, Kansas; Whitney Reinecker, of Wichita, Kansas;

Mackenzie Kettler, of Wichita, Kansas; Meagan Kettler, of Wichita, Kansas Travis Martin, of Wichita, Knasas; his siblings, Pam Washburn and her husband Bill, of Hutchinson, Kansas; Debra Orth and her husband David, of McPherson, Kansas; Janee' Doll, of Richfield, Wisconsin. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Kaden Reinecker, Lily Goodwin and Carson Goodwin; other relatives and a host of friends.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Joni and Gene Reinecker; a sister, Cynthia Reinecker; a brother, Mike Reinecker and a nephew, Jason Orth.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 18, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Glidden - Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas, with Pastor David Case officiating.

Burial will be held at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rick's Grandchildren Fund and they can be sent to Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home, 222 W. Euclid, McPherson, Ks. 67460.



Richard Lee Reinecker, 64, of Wichita, Kansas passed away Tuesday, September 8th, 2020 at his residence..Rick was born in McPherson, Kansas on August 23, 1956, a son of Gene Hayden and Joan Lee (Edwards) Reinecker.Rick attended Roosevelt Elementary School, McPherson Junior High School and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1974.He was a member of Church of the Brethren.Through the years Rick worked for Mahaney Construction Company, Wichita, Kansas as a foreman, Cruthers Construction, Wichita, Kansas as a carpenter and a mechanic for Malm Automotive, McPherson, Kansas.Rick enjoyed listening to blue's music, fishing, grilling, fireworks, KU Basketball, Rick was a diehard KC Chiefs Football fan, loved his grandkids and spending time with his friends and family.He is survived by his children, Dylan Reinecker, of Wichita, Kansas; Whitney Reinecker, of Wichita, Kansas;Mackenzie Kettler, of Wichita, Kansas; Meagan Kettler, of Wichita, Kansas Travis Martin, of Wichita, Knasas; his siblings, Pam Washburn and her husband Bill, of Hutchinson, Kansas; Debra Orth and her husband David, of McPherson, Kansas; Janee' Doll, of Richfield, Wisconsin. Gene Lindsay was born on March 11, 1963 in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Royce and Carol Rutz Lindsay. He died early Wednesday, September 9, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer at his home in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 57.

Gene grew up in Abilene, where he attended schools and graduated from Abilene High School. Following graduation, he attended Beloit Vo-Tech in carpentry.

For many years he worked at Kent Manufacturing, and later Carrico Implement. He retired early to serve as a cook and housekeeper for his wife Rhonda. He always had a dream of bussing tables, and fulfilled his dream working at Bubba Q’s.

“Big Mason” was as hard-working as they get, but he always had time to hang out with friends listening to music and having a Jack and Coke, or attending and tailgating at K-State football games. He was the life of the party, and was usually the first one there and the last to leave. He would give you the shirt off his back, even if it didn’t have sleeves.

He loved wrestling with his grandkids, and was a great friend to many.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Roger.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Rhonda; son, Nathan Scaglione and his wife Jakobee of Crete, NE; sister, Jo Baugh and her husband Kyle of Oceanside, CA; brother, Rod and his wife Marsha of Abilene; three grandsons, Lane, Brecken, and Dominic; numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews; and daughter Amanda and her three children.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Friday, September 11 at the Beloit First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 1-7 PM with family present from 5-7 PM Thursday at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice or Charity of Donor's Choice.

Teacher morale is at its lowest point since the pandemic began, according to data reported from the Education Week Research Center. It appears that about half of the nation’s schools have at least some students returning to classrooms and about 90 percent of districts are requiring teachers to wear face coverings. Reports indicate that elementary students are adapting well, wearing their masks without complaint and often with enthusiasm. They are eagerly washing their hands too.

But for teachers, speaking through a mask makes having a “teacher’s voice” particularly important.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Many elementary teachers are also using more gestures.&nbsp; Many teachers naturally use gestures and we often joke that they would go silent if they had to sit on their hands. But good teachers realize that we all converse with our hands and our eyes and our body posture. We have innate or unschooled gestures that are “homesigns” as described by University of Chicago Professor Susan Goldin-Meadow. She saw how a deaf child who had not learned sign language nevertheless used richly meaningful gestures that were natural and understandable.

Homesign gestures are nouns and verbs and possess the “universal properties of language.” Sometimes you see a person walking alone but speaking into a cell phone and gesturing to a listener who will never see it. This is “co-speech gesturing” that we naturally provide even if our listener cannot see it. When they can, it adds visual richness.

Teachers also realize “When we are excited, our students are excited.” And it comes as much from our visual expression as from our speech. This is the richness of face-to-face classroom communication. But you have to be in the presence of the speaker. Going through media dampens students’ perception.

Compare sitting at a ball game in the enthusiastic cheering crowd versus watching on ESPN where the view is actually better but the atmosphere is not as electric. It is the high resolution gestures that we can read by “being there” that provides greater understanding and empathy and exultation. Lack of resolution in co-speech gesturing is but one of many deficiencies of inferior online learning.

For some teachers whose “teacher’s voice” is too soft, some are using a headset microphone outside the mask. Teachers are discovering they need to have several masks in order to change out when one gets wet. Speaking through a mask can also cause dehydration; teachers learn to step out to drop the mask to take a drink.

For those students that must study from home, the fiasco of this last spring has clearly shown that anytime-anywhere asynchronous learning is abysmal. Those who taught during the 1970s experiment with the much hyped television education know it failed miserably. Today’s teachers know that only “live screen time” or being “together” online with the teacher in real time is a little more engaging. But it is nowhere as good as being physically present in class.

For those students watching a screen at home, “Zoom fatigue” has become a major limitation. Honest teachers clearly recognize that the attention span on a screen is limited and far less than engagement in a real classroom.

And it is the hugs that young elementary students miss. That is hard to simulate. Cardboard cut-out “fake hands” or waving to friends from a distance just isn’t the same.

But K-12 teachers are “in loco parentis” or function “in the place of the parent” and have a jurisdiction over students.

Universities have less jurisdiction over their students, especially off-campus. However, many college students are aware that their safety depends on their classmates not participating in high risk behaviors. Off-campus beer parties are becoming a source of asymptomatic transmission. While the risk of serious COVID-19 infection is less the younger the student, hospitalizations occur and in turn endanger healthcare workers both young and old. And non-traditional students coming back for advanced degrees are older and more at-risk.

So some college students who are alert to these dangerous behaviors are “virus snitching” on their irresponsible classmates. And that is a good thing&nbsp;&nbsp;

EDUCATION FRONTLINES:  Off to school?

FINNEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged assault of a police officer.

Just after 3 a.m. Friday, police were at the 900 block of Safford Avenue in Garden City investigating a reckless driver who fled from a vehicle, according to officer Lana Urteaga.

While at the scene, officers observed a man identified as Braulio Guy Ortiz, 31, Garden City, who was agitated and intoxicated. He was carrying a Roman Candle style firework and yelled obscenities at the officers.

Ortiz went inside his residence and returned with a blow torch and attempted to light the firework. He allegedly pointed the firework at one of the officers and approached the officer. Ortiz refused to listen to instructions to drop the firework.

Police arrested Ortiz on requested charges of Aggravated Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer. The case is under review by the Finney County Attorney.

Eagle Communications Inc. continues to grow its Midwest footprint. The employee-owned company announced Monday the acquisition of two western Nebraska radio stations.

Eagle, which operates 31 stations in three states, has acquired Paxton, Neb.-based KZTL-FM (93.5) and Sutherland, Neb.-based KRNP-FM (100.7) from Legacy Communications Inc., who was represented by Kalil &amp; Co. Inc.

"At Eagle Radio, serving our communities is what we do best, and we're proud to serve the Midwest from Kansas to Missouri, Nebraska to South Dakota and into Colorado," said Olivia Hasenauer, Eagle Regional Manager North Platte, Alliance and Chadron. "With the addition of these two new stations, it only strengthens our footprint and our ability to grow the communities we serve, our clients, as well as our listener and viewer engagement." &nbsp;

Eagle currently operates 7 Nebraska stations in North Platte, Alliance, and Chadron. Multiple stations within the Nebraska footprint were recently honored for on-air excellence by the Nebraska Broadcasters Association.

All current employees of the two new Eagle stations will become employee-owners of Eagle Communications, which is based in Hays, Kan., and employs 170.

"Eagle Communications is excited to continue to grow, and these new stations will be important pieces of our growth strategy in 2020 and beyond," Eagle Chairman Gary Shorman said. "And we are just as excited to bring these stations' listeners Eagle's commitment to quality entertainment, news, sports and information."

Eagle expands with the acquisition of two new stations

Contrary to tweets, the Pledge of Allegiance broadcast on each of the four nights of the Democratic Convention contained “under God” each night. What most listeners may not know is the origin of that pledge and when that phrase was added.

The American Pledge of Allegiance was written by Christian socialist minister Francis Bellamy in 1892 and formally adopted by Congress in 1942. Bellamy would later state that he “viewed his Pledge as an ‘inoculation’ that would protect immigrants and native-born but insufficiently patriotic Americans from the ‘virus’ of radicalism and subversion.” Bellamy’s version did not include the term “under God” insofar as he was very aware of the many different religious viewpoints for which the U.S. became a shelter from religious intolerance elsewhere.

The “under God” was added under President Eisenhower in 1954. This came at a time of Joe McCarthy fear-mongering and pressure to contrast the United States from the “godless” Soviet Union.

Advocates for the addition of this phrase pointed to Lincoln’s use of it in the Gettysburg Address. But in 2004, linguist Geoffrey Nunberg demonstrated that in Lincoln’s time, “under God” would have meant closer to “God willing.”

Today, adequately-trained school administrators know that they cannot compel public school students to pledge allegiance to the flag or stand during that time. Challenges from Jehovah’s Witnesses and others eventually resulted in a legal understanding that the phrase is not a promotion of religion. In the 2010 Newdow v. Rio Linda Union School District case, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals found the words “under God” were of a “ceremonial and patriotic nature.”

In 2014, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court also found the words “under God” represented a patriotic and not a religious exercise.

As much as politicians today want to argue over the Pledge of Allegiance, they seem totally clueless about the author of the Pledge being a Christian socialist minister. And so was his extended family. His cousin Edward Bellamy was a Christian socialist who wrote the utopian novel “Looking Backward” which was the third most-published book in America in the 1800s, after Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Ben-Hur.

Although both Edward and Francis Bellamy were socialists, they recognized the knee-jerk response to the term “socialist” even back in the late 1800s. This was the so-called “Gilded Age” when railroad barons and bankers could charge exorbitant rates and ranchers and farmers who needed to get cattle and crops to market had no options. Edward Bellamy’s utopia would have stopped this capitalist extortion. It attracted a large number of followers, especially in the Great Plains. But Edward explained the problem with the term “socialist” to a colleague in 1888.

“Every sensible man will admit there is a big deal in a name, especially in making first impressions. In the radicalness of the opinions I have expressed, I may seem to out-socialize the socialists, yet the word socialist is one I never could well stomach. In the first place it is a foreign word in itself, and equally foreign in all its suggestions.... [W]hatever German and French reformers may choose to call themselves, socialist is not a good name for a party to succeed with in America.”

Over 160 “Nationalist Clubs” were formed based on Bellamy’s socialist ideas (taken from his proposal to “nationalize” most companies). But he never used the term “socialist.” These clubs were eventually absorbed into the People's Party. For a while, they won elections in the Great Plains regions, but not at the national level.

Nevertheless, many of the ideas voiced by the Bellamy cousins and later socialists eventually made it into the mainstream: minimum wages, price supports, free public schooling, unemployment insurance, social security, an end to monopolies, an end to child labor and more. Indeed, without unemployment insurance and social security, this current pandemic would have resulted in a dramatic and long term Second Great Depression by now.

And without socialist Francis Bellamy, we would not have our Pledge of Allegiance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

EDUCATION FRONTLINES: Origin of the Pledge of Allegiance

The thank-you note came from the office of former President George W. Bush, expressing appreciation for the wonderful pork rinds provided by this remarkable business. &nbsp;

Thaddeus and Kelly Perry are owners and founders of Perry’s Pork Rinds in Bronson.&nbsp;&nbsp;They grew up in southeast Kansas, married and moved to Bronson to be near family.

Thaddeus, a butcher, would occasionally fry pork rinds in the backyard as a hobby. Kelly remembered delicious pork rinds from the Ozarks.&nbsp;

When Kelly and Thaddeus wanted to earn some extra money for a cruise, they decided to sell pork rinds and funnel cakes at an upcoming fair in Missouri. &nbsp;

They looked online for seasonings and USDA-inspected pork rinds, borrowed a kettle, and set up a tent at the fair. Then a thunderstorm came through and ruined any chance of cooking. “I cried,” Kelly said. “But my husband is the hardest-working guy I know.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the storm passed, he cooked more pork rinds all night long.”&nbsp;

The pork rinds were a big hit. Kelly and Thaddeus were soon headed to his niece’s wedding in Manhattan and she posted on Facebook about the few bags of pork rinds they had remaining. When she checked messages after the wedding, she realized the rinds were in high demand. “We sold all we had left and paid for our cruise in full,” Kelly said.&nbsp;

Kelly and Thaddeus set up their own LLC as Perry’s Pork Rinds in September 2017. “We haven’t stopped since,” Kelly said.&nbsp;

“Several customers were interested in nutritional facts so we contacted Dr. Elizabeth Boyle and Dr. Fadi at K-State. They were so helpful with our nutrition labeling,” Kelly said. The Perrys also joined the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s From the Land of Kansas program.&nbsp;

“We use soybean oil and we heat it to just over 400 degrees,” Thaddeus said. “Soybean oil is a heart-healthy oil and it smells better than lard,” Kelly said. “We hand-season them. Our pork rinds are unique flavors, a very fresh, light crunch that’s not hard, a really good, low-carb snack option,” she said.&nbsp;

Perry’s Pork Rinds now offers this tasty snack in 10 flavors and three seasonal ones. “Everything we do is because we listen to our customers,” Kelly said. “I would post different flavors on Facebook and ask our customers to vote on them,” she said.&nbsp;

Today, Perry’s Pork Rinds come as original, spicy, ranch, barbecue, cinnamon sugar, sour cream &amp; onion, cheddar cheese, chili cheese, chili lime, and garlic parmesan. (Is your mouth watering yet?) Product sales got another boost when posted on the Shop Kansas Farms Facebook page. Sales boomed and two full-time employees were hired.&nbsp;

Kelly likes to experiment with recipes using pork rinds. “I made a bacon, jalapeño,&nbsp;cheddar-cheese, pork-rind meatloaf,” she said. “Anything that calls for breadcrumbs, you can use pork rinds for. They’re great in chili, taco salad, and other dishes,” she said. “It’s more than just a snack, it can help make a family meal,” Kelly said.&nbsp;

Perry’s Pork Rinds have gone to all 50 states plus Canada and as far away as Saudi Arabia. The office of former President Bush ordered products and sent a complimentary thank-you note afterward.&nbsp;

Sales in 2019 were up 328%. Perry’s Pork Rinds was named the Kansas Department of Commerce Minority-Owned Business of the Year in Sales and Distribution.&nbsp;

The Perrys plan to open the Famous Perry’s Pork Rind Country Store and production facility in a new building along Highway 54 at the site of a former gas station. This will feature other Kansas products including in-house made fudge, saltwater taffy, jerky, smoked cheese, popcorn and more.&nbsp;

That’s exciting to see in a rural community like Bronson, population 323 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

📹Chiefs raise championship flag over Arrowhead Stadium

Marches, protests and demonstrations, on the street or now online, are how the United States talks to itself. And, to the benefit of the nation, we are doing a lot of talking these days.

Propelled and protected by the First Amendment freedoms of speech, assembly and petition, we have taken to the streets today and in the past to call the country to consider national challenges and solve national inequities, to press for change or to voice opposition to policies, plans and practices.

Our next national moment: Friday, Aug. 28, the planned commemoration of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It could not come at a more appropriate time.

If 2020 is to be remembered for more than the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be as a year in which our fellow citizens — and, very often, those among us who see themselves as outside the majority in one way or another — demanded to be heard in matters of freedom and social justice and, even more, demanded more loudly than ever to see positive change as a result.

The planned commemorations will include&nbsp;Rep. John Lewis, the youngest speaker at the ’63 event and all but certain to be the patron-in-absentia for the event and others now planned:

 <li>The&nbsp;Rev. Al Sharpton’s&nbsp;National Action Network (NAN), in collaboration with several other sponsors, plans a march with as many as 100,000 participants and tents on or near the National Mall and other events, according to permit information made public in June. Officially, it’s the “Get Your Knee Off Our Necks” march, recognizing the death of&nbsp;George Floyd.</li><li>The NAACP plans a Virtual March on Washington, streamed across key social media platforms and television networks starting Thursday evening, Aug. 27 and concluding the next evening. At midday Friday,&nbsp;Martin Luther King III&nbsp;and representatives of the families of Black people who have died at the hands of police, will march online, bolstered by an actual march in Washington, D.C.</li>
 </ul>The marches, however they mesh, will be about more than memories. Some will be demonstrating that day against continuing police brutality targeting Black citizens or other people of color. Others will press for major reforms in policing and funding for police overall, and for sentencing and prison reform.Consider for a moment the lasting impact of the critical moment of the 1963 march, when&nbsp;Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech, with words that have resounded through the years.King’s speech, some 10 minutes longer than the six minutes he was allotted, didn’t include its memorable title until gospel singer&nbsp;Mahalia Jackson, recalling earlier King speeches as she stood behind him at the podium on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, said to him, “Tell ’em about the dream, Martin, tell ’em about the dream!”Setting aside his prepared remarks, King told an estimated 150,000 at the memorial and nearby Reflecting Pool that “ … even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream … that … we will be able to speed up that day when all God’s children, Black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, ‘Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!’”It may not be a focus of this year’s commemorations, but the march 57 years ago was rooted in a similar event planned but not held more than two decades earlier. In 1941,&nbsp;A. Philip Randolph, founder of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters labor union, called for a march on Washington, D.C., to protest exclusion of Black workers from defense industry jobs. In return for cancelling that event, Randolph gained an executive order issued by&nbsp;President Franklin D. Roosevelt&nbsp;forming the Fair Employment Practices Commission to investigate racial discrimination in the national defense industry.Lest we forget, commemorations around the 1963 march likely won’t be the only calls for a “redress of grievances” on that day. Ongoing national protests include groups opposing each other in public over COVID-19-related issues — back-to-school plans, government orders to wear face coverings in public, the renewal of limits on store hours or openings, restrictions on worship services and social public gatherings, even the very nature and extent of the pandemic itself.The breadth of current public outcries may be surprising, but the depth of emotion behind them shouldn’t be — protest is backed into the nation’s civic DNA: From pre-revolutionary times, when colonials took to cobblestone streets to protest taxes and British rule, to rallies and marches by pro- and anti-slavery advocates in the early- to mid-1800s; from anti-draft demonstrations during the Civil War to a decade of anti-war rallies during the Vietnam War; from suffragette marches in the late 1800s and early 1900s to the ERA battles of the 1970s; from marches that led to a Prohibition amendment in 1920 to marches that led to its repeal in 1933; from white-robed Ku Klux Klan demonstrations across the nation peaking in the 1920s to the civil rights movement peaking in the 1960s; to the LGBTQ movement, from Stonewall in 1969 to recent demonstrations over marriage laws and employment equality.“We Protest” may well stand next to “In God We Trust” as a national motto. Certainly, the founders saw those core freedoms of speech, assembly and petition as central to keeping the nation safe from the “tyranny of the majority,” where minority voices and calls for change were stifled before having any real chance to produce reforms or form a new majority, seen all-too often in the European nations of their time.There’s no guarantee under the First Amendment that when America talks to itself, Americans will listen. But our history is marked by those moments when as a nation we do hear, sometimes belatedly, what protesters, demonstrators and marchers are saying. And we are a fairer, more honest, more just country as a result.As King said in his last public speech in 1968, nearly five years after the March on Washington: “Somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right.”March on, citizens, on Aug. 28 and the days after.
