WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Federal prosecutors on Tuesday painted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hunter-biden-trial-gun-charges-delaware-cc96568ac3428802557c85876c820dec">President Joe Biden’s son Hunter</a>&nbsp;as deceptive and driven by addiction, a man whose dark habits ensnared loved ones and who knew what he was doing when he lied on federal forms to purchase a gun in 2018.

Jurors also got their first look at the document at the center of the case, and Hunter Biden's attorney argued that his client did not believe he was in the throes of addiction when he stated in the paperwork that he did not have a drug problem. In the short time that he had the gun, he did nothing with it, and weapon was never even loaded, attorney Abbe Lowell said in opening statements.

“You will see that he is not guilty,” Lowell said.

<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/hunter-biden">Hunter Biden</a>&nbsp;has been charged with three felonies stemming from the purchase of the Colt revolver when he was, according to his memoir, addicted to crack. He has been accused of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, making a false claim on the application by saying he was not a drug user and illegally having the gun for 11 days.

The case is dredging up painful memories for the president and his family, and revealing new and highly personal details about their struggles with addiction as the 2024 election looms, all while the first lady watched from the front row of the courtroom.

Jurors will hear testimony from the president’s brother James Biden, who is close with Hunter and helped his nephew through rehab stints in the past. They will also hear how Hallie Biden, the widow of the president's late son, also became addicted to crack during a brief relationship with Hunter. Hallie took the gun from Hunter and tossed it into the garbage at a nearby market, afraid of what he might do with it. The gun was later found by someone collecting cans and eventually turned over to police.

The president was in Washington on Tuesday,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-asylum-migration-immigration-mexico-border-dec5f83b468b5795479bf1f5e49799d5">announcing an immigration order</a>&nbsp;and hosting a picnic for congressional leaders before a scheduled departure for France later in the day. He will be gone the rest of the week. Jill Biden planned to meet him in Europe.

The president’s allies are worried about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-hunter-laptop-ba96537a686d04dc3773552cfa13deeb">the toll the trial may take on the elder Biden</a>, who’s long been protective and deeply concerned about his only living son and his sobriety and who must now watch as those past mistakes are publicly scrutinized.

Prosecutors on Tuesday spent hours on Hunter Biden’s drug problem, using his own words and missives to show the depth of the addiction. An FBI agent read aloud messages to the jury that chronicled his desperate effort to buy drugs, email receipts for a detox facility he attended before relapsing and large sums of cash he withdrew.

They showed jurors his old laptop computer, the same one he left at a Delaware repair shop and never retrieved. In&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-joe-biden-wilmington-elections-coronavirus-pandemic-45e0fe89ff7302a2a14afdba2d91b531">2020, the contents</a>&nbsp;made their way to Republicans and were publicly leaked, revealing highly personal messages about his work and his life. He has since sued over the data breach.

And the jury heard lengthy audio excerpts of his memoir, “Beautiful Things,” in which he narrates his return to Delaware around the time of the gun purchase and his descent into drugs following the death of his brother, Beau, in 2015 from cancer. The written excerpts were displayed on a screen as the audio was played.

His sister Ashley Biden, watching from the courtroom, dabbed at her eyes with a tissue and eventually left. Jill Biden, too, was absent after lunch. She was expected in Washington with her husband.

Prosecutor Derek Hines told the jury Hunter was trying to score drugs just days after he lied on the form, which was later shown to jurors.

“No one is allowed to lie on a federal form like that, even Hunter Biden,” Hines said. “He crossed the line when he chose to buy a gun and lied about a federal background check ... the defendant’s choice to buy a gun is why we are here."

“When the defendant filled out that form, he knew he was a drug addict,” and prosecutors don't have to prove he was using the day he purchased the firearm, Hines said.

The proceedings come after the collapse of a deal with prosecutors that would have avoided the spectacle of a trial so close to the 2024 election. Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty and has argued he's being unfairly targeted by the Justice Department after Republicans decried the now-defunct plea deal as special treatment for the Democratic president's son.

Lowell said the form asks whether you “are” a drug user. “It does not say ‘have you ever been,’" and he suggested the president's son did not think of himself as someone with a drug problem when he purchased the gun.

His state of mind should be considered at the time of the purchase, not “what he wrote in a book in 2021.”

Lowell also blamed Hunter's problems with the firearm on Hallie's disposal of it.

“After he bought the gun, Hunter did nothing with it," Lowell said. The gun became a problem only because of what Hallie Biden did.

If convicted, Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison, though first-time offenders do not get anywhere near the maximum, and it’s unclear whether the judge would give him time behind bars.

The trial is unfolding just days after Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-trial-deliberations-jury-testimony-verdict-85558c6d08efb434d05b694364470aa0">convicted of 34 felonies</a>&nbsp;in New York City. The two criminal cases are unrelated, but their proximity underscores how the courts have taken center stage during the 2024 campaign.

But Judge Maryellen Noreika, who was nominated to the bench by Trump, questioned some unusual aspects of the deal, which included a proposed guilty plea to misdemeanor offenses to resolve the tax crimes and a diversion agreement on the gun charge, which meant as long as he stayed out of trouble for two years the case would be dismissed.

The lawyers could not come to a resolution on her questions, and the deal fell apart. Attorney General Merrick Garland then appointed the top investigator, a former U.S. attorney for Delaware, David Weiss, as a special counsel in August, and a month later Hunter Biden was indicted.

Evelyn Jean Britt September 26, 1939 ~ June 1, 2024

Evelyn “Jean” Britt age 84 passed away Saturday, June 1, 2024 at the Village Manor Nursing Home in Abilene. She was born September 26, 1939 the daughter of Oval and Gladys Rosa Leah (Sowder) Abel in Hymera, Indiana. She lived in Indiana and Germany before coming to Kansas.

She married Duane Britt on October 13, 1956 in Abilene. Jean worked at Best Western Inn and Vacu-Blast and retired from Alco-Duckwall general office where she worked in the coffee shop for 21 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step father M/SGT Wendell C. Reid, her son Steven R. Britt, brother James Abel, sisters Blossom Insley and Gladys Rosa Leah Reid.

Jean is survived by her husband Duane of the home in Solomon, sons Gary Britt and Dan Britt of Solomon, sister in law Sylvia Mickey, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

After retirement, Jean enjoyed spending time with her family, feeding the birds, sewing, reading, computer, and crossword puzzles.

Services for Jean will be at 10:30 am Friday, June 7, 2024 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. Her final resting place will be in the Green Lawn Cemetery south of Solomon. Friends may sign the register book until service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Solomon First Responders and may be sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.

She was born September 26, 1939 the daughter of Oval and Gladys Rosa Leah (Sowder) Abel in Hymera, Indiana. She lived in Indiana and Germany before coming to Kansas.She married Duane Britt on October 13, 1956 in Abilene. Jean worked at Best Western Inn and Vacu-Blast and retired from Alco-Duckwall general office where she worked in the coffee shop for 21 years.She was preceded in death by her parents, step father M/SGT Wendell C. Reid, her son Steven R. Britt, brother James Abel, sisters Blossom Insley and Gladys Rosa Leah Reid.Jean is survived by her husband Duane of the home in Solomon, sons Gary Britt and Dan Britt of Solomon, sister in law Sylvia Mickey, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.After retirement, Jean enjoyed spending time with her family, feeding the birds, sewing, reading, computer, and crossword puzzles.Services for Jean will be at 10:30 am Friday, June 7, 2024 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. Her final resting place will be in the Green Lawn Cemetery south of Solomon. Friends may sign the register book until service time at the funeral home. Saline County Jail Bookings, June 3

BUTLER COUNTY—Law enforcement in Butler County are investigating a bomb threat.

On Saturday, police were dispatched to for a bomb threat that had been called into the YMCA, 300 N. Main Street in El Dorado. according to a social media report.

With the assistance of the El Dorado Fire Department and the Butler County Sheriff’s Department the business was evacuated and searched. No explosive devices were located.

During the investigation, it was determined that 67-year-old Ramon Jay Pratt, of El Dorado had called in the threat to the YMCA. Pratt was arrested for aggravated criminal threat and booked into the Butler County Detention Facility.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a convicted felon on new allegations after an incident involving a gun.

Just before 9 a.m. May 29, police responded to a reported disturbance at Planet Smokes located at 101 SE 37th Street in Topeka, according Police Lt. Michael Hren. Upon arrival, it was alleged an individual entered the business and an employee, later identified as Angel L. Baatrup, 33, of Topeka, had pointed a firearm at them.

Officers made contact with Baatrup and learned she was prohibited from possessing a firearm. As a result of the investigation, Baatrup was later arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated assault; use of a deadly weapon and Felon in possession of a firearm

Red Fern Booksellers announced earlier this month that the award-winning author of We Move the World, the Butt or Face? Series and the upcoming Ode to Grapefruit: How James Earl Jones Found His Voice, Kari Lavelle will visit the downtown book store in June.&nbsp;

According to event organizers Lavelle has always had a love for words: as a kid reading books, as a speech pathologist helping children communicate, and now as a writer creating stories. Lavelle grew up in Salina, but now lives in Austin, Texas with her husband, their two children, and dog Dobby.&nbsp;

Lavelle loved growing up in Salina and looks forward to coming home to Bogey's milkshakes, the River Festival and now, Red Fern Booksellers as her summers allow.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Criminal charges against Scottie Scheffler have been dismissed, ending a legal saga that began with images of the world’s top male golfer being&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scheffler-pga-police-fatality-a421bfdb346f00dec95c95a0ab04e4d9">arrested and handcuffed</a>&nbsp;in Louisville during the PGA Championship.

Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell asked a judge Wednesday afternoon to drop the four charges against Scheffler, who was not required to be in the courtroom. The prosecutor said his team reviewed the case in a “thorough and expeditious manner.”

“Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr. Scheffler," O'Connell said during the hearing that lasted less than 10 minutes. "Mr. Scheffler’s characterization that this was ‘a big misunderstanding’ is corroborated by the evidence.”

Scheffler was charged with a felony for assaulting a police officer with his vehicle, along with three misdemeanors. The arresting officer, Detective Bryan Gillis, was outside the gate of Valhalla Golf Course May 17 directing traffic after a pedestrian death when he encountered Scheffler.

The prosecutor said the findings of his office’s review of the case led him to request the dismissal of the charges.

“The evidence we reviewed supports the conclusion that Detective Gillis was concerned for public safety at the scene when he initiated contact with Mr. Scheffler,” O’Connell said. “However, Mr. Scheffler’s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offenses.”

Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, was asked if he wanted to comment. Romines replied: “Judge, it’s taken me a long time to understand that when I’m winning, don’t talk. So I have nothing to say, your honor.”

The judge then accepted the dismissal motion.

Scheffler, 27, was driving a PGA courtesy vehicle when Gillis said he “refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging” Gillis to the ground. Gillis said his uniform pants were damaged in the fall and he was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

A surveillance video released by Louisville police last week showed Gillis pursuing Scheffler’s vehicle on foot and stopping him from entering the course. Scheffler is later pulled from the car and cuffed. But the video did not show Gillis’ first contact with Scheffler, authorities said.

Gillis has been disciplined for not activating his body-worn camera during the arrest. In a report on that failure, Gillis wrote that Scheffler had “demanded to be let in” the golf course.

Scheffler has said he simply misunderstood the commands coming from traffic officers.

The famous golfer spent a brief stint in a jail cell, then returned to the course for the second round. He&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scottie-scheffler-pga-championship-15f6041dc4d9fd00ab65f742737f0f34">finished the tournament</a>&nbsp;tied for eighth place.

🎥 Why charges against world's top golfer were dropped after arrest

BUTLER COUNTY—Authorities investigating a high-speed law enforcement chase that sent three people to the hospital including a Kansas police officer released additional details on what led to the crash.

Just after 6p.m. Monday, deputies responded to the Butler County-Greenwood County line on US 400 for a vehicle that failed to yield to Greenwood County deputies, according to Butler County Undersheriff Daimon Cundiff.

It had been reported that a pickup truck pulling an empty boat trailer struck another vehicle and after being located by law enforcement, the driver later identified as&nbsp;Allan Milton Firman III, 44, Wichita, refused to stop, according to Cunfiff.

&nbsp;As the truck reached the county line on US 400, the pursuing Greenwood County deputy ended the pursuit. A short time later, Butler County Emergency Communications received another call of a reckless driver involving a vehicle matching the description of the truck and trailer pursued by Greenwood County.

The sheriff’s office said reports indicated that the truck was driving into oncoming traffic at a high rate of speed in a construction zone near Beaumont. 

A deputy then spotted the truck heading west in the area of US 400 and Pickrell Road. The deputy tried to stop the pickup but Firman continued west. 

The sheriff’s office said deputies set up tire deflation devices along the highway ahead of a fleeing truck and at one point, the driver swerved into the median to avoid the device. In that process, the fleeing pickup nearly hit a deputy, according to Cundiff.

The pickup continued west in the eastbound lanes of US 400 and deputies deployed another tire deflation device near US 400 and Lunger Road on the east side of Augusta.

The pickup entered the city of Augusta and the pickup struck the Augusta Police Department Dodge Durango Pursuit driven by&nbsp;Officer Kyle E. Sisco with the Augusta Police Department, according to the Kansas Highway Patro.

EMS transported Firman, a passenger in the pickup Sandra C.  Schopplein, 47, Derby and Sisco to Wichita area hospitals.&nbsp; Just after 11p.m. Monday, Firman was booked into the Butler County Jail on requested charges of&nbsp; fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, drug charges, driving under the influence, transporting an open container and reckless driving, according to Cundiff.

Firman has two previous convictions for aggravated battery, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Firman is set to make his first court appearance on Wednesday afternoon.

BUTLER COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just before 6:30p.m. Monday in Butler County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the law enforcement were in pursuit of a 2020 Chevy Silverado that was pulling a was pulling a 2020 Karavan boat trailer westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 54.

The pickup driven by Allan Milton&nbsp;Firman III, 44, Wichita, struck the left rear corner of a 2023 Dodge Durango Pursuit driven by Officer Kyle E.&nbsp;Sisco with the Augusta Police Department.

EMS transported&nbsp;Firman, a passenger in the pickup&nbsp;Sandra C.&nbsp; Schopplein, 47, Derby and Sisco to Wichita area hospitals. The occupants of the pickup were properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp; Just after 11p.m. Monday, Firman was booked into the Butler County Jail. He has two previous convictions for aggravated battery, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

 </figure>BUTLER COUNTY—Authorities investigating a high-speed law enforcement chase that sent three people to the hospital including a Kansas police officer released additional details on what led to the crash.Just after 6p.m. Monday, deputies responded to the Butler County-Greenwood County line on US 400 for a vehicle that failed to yield to Greenwood County deputies, according to Butler County Undersheriff Daimon Cundiff.It had been reported that a pickup truck pulling an empty boat trailer struck another vehicle and after being located by law enforcement, the driver later identified as&nbsp;Allan Milton Firman III, 44, Wichita, refused to stop, according to Cunfiff.&nbsp;As the truck reached the county line on US 400, the pursuing Greenwood County deputy ended the pursuit. A short time later, Butler County Emergency Communications received another call of a reckless driver involving a vehicle matching the description of the truck and trailer pursued by Greenwood County.The sheriff’s office said reports indicated that the truck was driving into oncoming traffic at a high rate of speed in a construction zone near Beaumont. A deputy then spotted the truck heading west in the area of US 400 and Pickrell Road. The deputy tried to stop the pickup but Firman continued west. The sheriff’s office said deputies set up tire deflation devices along the highway ahead of a fleeing truck and at one point, the driver swerved into the median to avoid the device. In that process, the fleeing pickup nearly hit a deputy, according to Cundiff.The pickup continued west in the eastbound lanes of US 400 and deputies deployed another tire deflation device near US 400 and Lunger Road on the east side of Augusta.The pickup entered the city of Augusta and the pickup struck the Augusta Police Department Dodge Durango Pursuit driven by&nbsp;Officer Kyle E. Sisco with the Augusta Police Department, according to the Kansas Highway Patro.EMS transported Firman, a passenger in the pickup Sandra C.  </figure>VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis apologized Tuesday after he was quoted using a vulgar and derogatory term about gay men to reaffirm the Catholic Church’s ban on gay priests.Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni issued a statement acknowledging the media storm that erupted about Francis’ comments, which were delivered behind closed doors to Italian bishops on May 20.Italian media on Monday had quoted unnamed Italian bishops in reporting that Francis jokingly used the term “faggotness” while speaking in Italian during the encounter. He had used the term in reaffirming the Vatican’s ban on allowing gay men to enter seminaries and be ordained priests.Bruni said Francis was aware of the reports and recalled that the Argentine pope, who has made outreach to LGBTQ+ Catholics a hallmark of his papacy, has long insisted there was “room for everyone” in the Catholic Church.“The pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he extends his apologies to those who were offended by the use of a term that was reported by others,” Bruni said.With the statement, Bruni carefully avoided an outright confirmation that the pope had indeed used the term, in keeping with the Vatican's tradition of not revealing what the pope says behind closed doors. But Bruni also didn't deny that Francis had used the term and acknowledged that some people had been offended by it.Francis was addressing an assembly of the Italian bishops conference, which recently approved a new document outlining training for Italian seminarians. The document, which hasn’t been published pending review by the Holy See, reportedly sought to open some wiggle room in the Vatican’s absolute ban on gay priests by introducing the issue of celibacy as the primary requirement for priests, gay or straight.The Vatican ban was articulated in a 2005 document from the Congregation for Catholic Education, and later repeated in a subsequent document in 2016, which said the church cannot admit to seminaries or ordain men who “practice homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies or support the so-called gay culture.”The position has long been criticized as homophobic and hypocritical for an institution that certainly counts gay priests in its ranks.
