WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate confirmed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kristi-noem">Kristi Noem</a>&nbsp;as homeland security secretary on Saturday, putting the South Dakota governor in charge of a sprawling agency that is essential to national security and President Donald Trump's plans to clamp down on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-trump-border-migrants-immigration-enforcement-a24389b7fd7875ef98b4ab45c14e8418">illegal immigration</a>.

Republicans kept the Senate working Saturday to install the latest member of Trump's national security team on a 59-34 vote. Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran was among seven&nbsp; Senators who missed the vote including Wyden and Merkley of Oregon, Warnock of Georgia, Smith of Minnesota, Schatz of Hawaii and King of Maine, according to the online report from the U.S. Senate.

Defense Secretary&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cia-director-ratcliffe-trump-cabinet-national-intelligence-a73ceaef42086d46a728979189a9826b">Pete Hegseth</a>&nbsp;was also confirmed in a dramatic tie-breaking vote Friday night, joining Secretary of State&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/marco-rubio">Marco Rubio</a>&nbsp;and CIA Director&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cia-director-ratcliffe-trump-cabinet-national-intelligence-a73ceaef42086d46a728979189a9826b">John Ratcliffe</a>. The Senate will next vote Monday evening on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/treasury-election-scott-bessent-trump-e4df1ef61309ee78f2affc2d9eabeff1">Scott Bessent's</a>&nbsp;confirmation as treasury secretary.

Noem, a Trump ally who is in her second term as governor, received 7 votes from Democrats. Republicans, who already held the votes necessary to confirm her, have expressed confidence in her determination to lead border security and immigration enforcement.

On social media, Noem thanked Trump for “the confidence in me to serve as Secretary of Homeland Security.”

She added, “I will work to make America SAFE again!”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said Friday, “Fixing this crisis and restoring respect for the rule of law is one of President Trump and Republicans’ top priorities. And it’s going to require a decisive and committed leader at the Department of Homeland Security."

Democrats are split on how to handle border enforcement and immigration under Trump, with some warming to his hard-line stand.

Still, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York, as well as most other Democrats, voted against Noem. He pointed to “bipartisan solutions to fix the mess at our border," adding that Noem “seems headed in the wrong direction.”

The homeland security secretary oversees U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Citizenship and Immigration Services. Beyond those agencies, the department is also responsible for securing airline transportation, protecting dignitaries, responding to natural disasters and more.

Trump is planning major changes to how the department functions, including involving the military in immigration enforcement and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-fema-project-2025-56ff64f264403b8934ecbf1f91928d73">reshaping the Federal Emergency Management Agency</a>. Those plans will immediately put Noem in the spotlight after the new president visited recent disaster sites in North Carolina and California on Friday.

During&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/noem-homeland-security-cabinet-trump-border-immigration-36ea11f8432078e08e71dce23c56d68c">her Senate hearing</a>, Noem was repeatedly asked by Democratic senators whether she would administer disaster aid to states even if Trump asked her not to.

Noem avoided saying she would defy the president, but told lawmakers, “I will deliver the programs according to the law and that it will be done with no political bias.”

Six people cycled through as homeland security secretary during Trump's first four years in office.

Noem, who held her state's lone U.S. House seat for eight years before becoming governor in 2019, has risen in the GOP by tacking closely with Trump. At one point, she was even under consideration to be his running mate.

Her political stock took a momentary dip, however, when she&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kristi-noem-book-dog-killing-081bd1d6e73fba046ea7fb534da1c79e">released a book</a>&nbsp;last year containing an account of her killing her hunting dog, as well as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kristi-noem-book-north-korea-90e61965e9ac486e52cec5b35da41f47">a false claim</a>&nbsp;that she once met with North Korean leader&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-korea-iran-diplomacy-military-cooperation-russia-f82461908cb59a15a634747e9ab48f6c">Kim Jong Un</a>.

Noem will be tasked with delivering on Trump's favorite issue, border security. The president's goals of deporting millions of people who entered the country illegally could put Noem, with her experience governing a rural state and growing up on a farm,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kristi-noem-dhs-immigration-crackdown-trump-south-dakota-52bf133437d20f4dd6f5284bb751e264">in a difficult position</a>. In South Dakota, many migrants, some in the country without permanent legal status, power the labor-heavy jobs that produce food and housing.

She has so far pledged to faithfully execute the president's orders and copied his talk of an “invasion” at the U.S. border with Mexico.

This afternoon, the 2025 Sterling Invitational will get underway as both Southeast of Saline basketball teams look for strong showings at their midseason tournaments.

The Invitational, which has been played since 1973 on the boys' side, and 2014 on the girls' side, has seen some of the best midseason basketball in the state of Kansas, and this year should be no exception, as SES, Sterling, Hugoton, Smoky Valley, Scott City, Lyons, Kingman, and Hutch Trinity all look to etch their names into the record books.

Sterling Invitational 2025 Schedule and Results

Norman Miller was born on December 24,1932 in Tuolumne, CA. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on January 19, 2025. &nbsp;

As the youngest of 10, Norman grew up adventuring throughout California and Texas. From fishing with old mining dynamite (to make sure the younger kids didn’t hurt themselves with it) to picking up odd jobs around town (but not blacksmithing - it didn’t run in the family) to being the school bus driver his senior year (don’t ask about his driver’s license test), there were always things to do, people to meet, and things to learn.&nbsp;

Norm joined the Army in 1954. He married his childhood sweetheart&nbsp;Mary Lou&nbsp;Levaggi&nbsp;in 1955 and started a family. Together they had five children: Toni Miller, Theresa (Bart) Allen, Louie (Jamie) Miller, Tina Ralston, and Tracy Miller (Chris Leonhard). After the death of Mary Lou in 2002,&nbsp;Norm married Betty Chase and&nbsp;brought his loving and caring ways to her&nbsp;family&nbsp;and friends. &nbsp;With&nbsp;another&nbsp;family and&nbsp;even&nbsp;more&nbsp;friends,&nbsp;Norm&nbsp;had a new captive&nbsp;audience&nbsp;to tell&nbsp;his amazing stories.&nbsp;Norm was a beloved grandparent to numerous grandchildren who meant the world to him.

Many of Norm’s stories involved his time in the Army. He chose to join the aviation branch after attending a presentation where the cash sign on bonus “fell” out of his instructor’s flight suit pockets. He flew helicopters through Korea and Vietnam and across Central America, flying in and out of remote and sometimes dangerous locations for both missions and side quests. He loved to tell stories about his journeys, including but not limited to crash landing on the side of a mountain, building the best club for enlisted men, forced landing and peaceful communication with a tribe of uncontacted peoples, flipping a poolside bar as a prank and having it almost go terribly wrong, and making sure not a single one of his men were killed during his tenure.&nbsp;He transitioned to managing Schilling Air Force Base, where he proudly served the Salina community and worked with&nbsp;waitingwives’ groups and other community organizations.

If you didn’t know him as Colonel Norm, many knew Norm as Santa for over a 50+ year span.&nbsp; Always dressed in his classic red suit with jingle bells, his appearance might’ve morphed over the years (a fake beard and white chalk in the early years to proudly growing his own white beard in the later), but his ability to bring the magic of Christmas never wavered. Norm proudly served as a Santa for several generations of kids, keeping the Christmas magic alive through personal home visits, community events, radio and TV appearances, video calls, and even through hot air balloon visits.&nbsp;

Norm lived a busy life&nbsp;that filled his days throughout the years.&nbsp;There were always people to meet, things to do, and stories to tell.&nbsp;He was an auctioneer, owned and operated an antique&nbsp;store, participated&nbsp;in community theater events,&nbsp;did&nbsp;fundraising for community organizations, attended&nbsp;countless&nbsp;sporting events and concerts for his grandkids,&nbsp;cooked&nbsp;many, many&nbsp;Friday&nbsp;night&nbsp;dinners, read two or three books a day, and enjoyed&nbsp;a nice cigar&nbsp;with a&nbsp;drink (NOT water though, the fish poop in that).&nbsp;

Norman went by many names: dad, pop, grandpa, Colonel, Santa, friend, role model, hero. To know Norm was to know kindness, mischief, selflessness, magic, friendship, warmth, and love. He was a rule breaker with pure intentions to do what was right for those he loved and the people he served. He was a problem solver,&nbsp;quick-witted, and had never met a&nbsp;stranger&nbsp;in his life. Norm was a friend to all, always ready to lend an ear, tell a story, cook a meal, or host a party at a moment’s notice. We will remember Norm with a book in his hand, a cigar in his mouth, a twinkle in eyes, and a smile, ready to tell the world of his adventures.

WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday night in Wichita.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office (SGSO) and Wichita Police Department (WPD) requested KBI assistance on Thursday, Jan. 23, around 11:55 p.m. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene.

At around 9 p.m., WPD received a call about a man who forced entry into a home and attempted to shoot at a male resident. The subject had bonded out of jail on domestic violence charges earlier that day. The man was later identified as Devario C. Edwards, 28, of Wichita.

Preliminary information indicates that after Edwards attempted to shoot the resident, he fled the scene and began a Facebook livestream. In the video, he is armed with a rifle and indicated he was headed to Spirit Aerosystems.

Once he arrived at Spirit, deputies from the Sedgwick County Sheriff and Wichita Police officers located the vehicle and a brief car chase ensued. Edwards then jumped out of his vehicle holding the gun. Around 11:10 p.m., he shot several rounds at officers, beginning an exchange of gunfire. Edwards was struck multiple times. Shortly after, officers approached him, secured his weapon, and began performing lifesaving measures. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 12:14 a.m. No law enforcement officers were injured during the exchange.

The preliminary investigation indicated that during the incident two police vehicles were struck by gunfire. Edwards fired over 20 rounds at police. A total of eight law enforcement officers fired over 100 rounds.

This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature, and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings which take several weeks to complete.

When this investigation concludes, case findings will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.

Police ID man who died in Kansas officer-shooting 

By SALINA POST Dickinson County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

On Thursday, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant in relation to a narcotics investigation, at a residence in the 2500 Block of Nicholson Road in Chapman, according to a media release.

While conducting the search warrant, deputies located THC edible products, Methamphetamine, Drug Paraphernalia, and firearms.

As a result of the investigation, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrested 34-year-old Emma Gomez and booked her into the Dickinson County Detention Facility on the following requested charges that include Possession with the Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school, Possession with the Intent to Distribute Marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school, Unlawful Manufacturing of Controlled Substance, Aggravated Endangering a Child, Possession with Intent to Distribute Drug Paraphernalia within 1,000 feet of a school, Criminal Possession of weapons, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and No Drug Tax Stamp.

Sheriff: Kansas woman accused of selling meth, marijuana

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas felon who left his 11-month-old daughter in the canal in Wichita is going back to prison.

Judge Tyler Roush sentence 34-year-old Vincent Perez to 54 months in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Perez pleaded&nbsp; guilty in December to aggravated endangering a child and aggravated battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In July, police were dispatched to conduct a welfare check in the vicinity of Interstate 135 and Pawnee in Wichita after receiving a report of a child in the canal, according to Officer Kristopher Gupilan.

Officers, with the assistance of the Wichita Fire Department, located the child within the canal. She was safely extracted from the canal and transported to a local hospital for precautionary medical evaluation and later placed into police protective custody, according to Gupilan.&nbsp;

Police believed Perez had information pertinent to the investigation and asked the public for assistance in locating him for questioning. The following day police booked&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=320252">Perez&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;into the Sedgwick County jail.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Perez has previous convictions for theft, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, criminal possession of a weapon and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Kan. felon who left baby daughter in canal is going back to prison

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea made a fairly emphatic statement on Thursday night that they belong on the American team for next year's Winter Olympics, putting together a near-flawless short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

The defending national champions scored 77.19 points for their skate, set to “Rain, in Your Black Eyes” by the Italian composer Ezio Bosso. It was more than four points better than their best in international competition, and it put Kam and O'Shea more than eight points ahead of second-place Emily Chan and Spencer Howe heading into Saturday night's free skate.

“Very proud to go out there and put together a strong performance like we train at home,” O'Shea said. “Lot of pressure coming back after we won last year and I was pretty happy with how we handled that as a team today.”

The women's short program was later Thursday night with Amber Glenn returning as the defending champion.

This year’s nationals, which comes just over a year before the Milano-Cortina Games, should help identify the front-runners for the team that the U.S. will send to Italy. It also should go a long way toward deciding the U.S. team for the world championships, which are returning to American soil for the first time in nine years this March in Boston.

Kam and O'Shea, who were fifth at the Grand Prix Final last month, opened with a clean triple twist before landing their side-by-side triple salchow. But it was their throw triple loop that highlighted the program, and Kam and O'Shea both knew it when their music came to an end — she punched both of her fists and he punched one of his own.

And their moms, who had clenched hands while watching from the stands, finally exhaled and celebrated themselves.

“My mom and I share some high anxiety in pressure moments. I think she knows what I feel,” Kam said, “but being able to see them on the big screen, it's just really special for them to come to these events with us.”

Chan and Howe, the 2023 silver medalists at nationals, scored 69.10 points for their program set to a cover of “Je Suis Malade," their score dragged down by a noticeable wobble going into their lift midway through.

Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov, the reigning silver medalists, were right behind Chan and Howe with 69.03 points.

“We were both really happy with how we felt out there,” said Chan, who dealt with a concussion earlier this season. “We put our heads together and really made a lot of improvement and felt we were really happy with our training, and we wanted to put it out here tonight.”

Kennedy</a>, which has fueled&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/e45a1408a8274447bdba8dc34b93bfa1">conspiracy theories</a>&nbsp;for decades.

The executive order Trump signed Thursday also aims to declassify the remaining federal records relating to the assassinations of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/martin-luther-king-jr">Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.</a>&nbsp;The order is among a flurry of executive actions Trump has quickly taken the first week of his second term.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “everything will be revealed.”

Trump has nominated Kennedy’s nephew,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/robert-f-kennedy-jr-rfk-things-to-know-explained-who-is-hhs-5288a4a7277d1a0b4a7ede8f57a971ce">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.</a>, to be the health secretary in his new administration. Kennedy’s father, Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated in 1968 as he sought the Democratic presidential nomination. The younger Kennedy&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/6e3b67150add418da998318039b3a1f6">has said he isn’t convinced</a>&nbsp;that a lone gunman was solely responsible for the assassination of his uncle, President Kennedy, in 1963.

The order directs the director of national intelligence and the attorney general to develop a plan within 15 days to release the remaining John F. Kennedy records, and within 45 days for the other two cases. It was not clear when the records would actually be released.

Trump handed the pen used to sign the order to an aide and directed it to be given to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Only a few thousand of the millions of governmental records related to the assassination of President Kennedy have yet to be fully declassified. And while many who have studied what's been released so far say the public shouldn’t anticipate any earth-shattering revelations, there is still an intense interest in details related to the assassination and the events surrounding it.

“There’s always the possibility that something would slip through that would be the tiny tip of a much larger iceberg that would be revealing," said Larry J. Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics and author of “The Kennedy Half-Century.” “That’s what researchers look for. Now, odds are you won’t find that but it is possible that it’s there.”

Kennedy was fatally shot in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-298388ef0d6e41d98a47c70c86c64788">downtown Dallas</a>&nbsp;on Nov. 22, 1963, as his motorcade passed in front of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/travel-and-tourism-e9f33c5e647d45149c1738d64ea0e3c5">Texas School Book Depository building,</a>&nbsp;where 24-year-old assassin&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/c7cb2904bd954273a42c9cce1458fe42">Lee Harvey Oswald</a>&nbsp;had positioned himself from a sniper’s perch on the sixth floor. Two days after Kennedy was killed, nightclub owner&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/national-national-general-news-808c313725d849fd884794fe49b6fd39">Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald during a jail transfer</a>.

In the early 1990s, the federal government mandated that all assassination-related documents be housed in a single collection in the National Archives and Records Administration. The collection of over 5 million records was required to be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/c50d6fd107534341b9fa47b9014801ab">opened by 2017,</a>&nbsp;barring any exemptions designated by the president.

The order notes that although no congressional act directs the release of information on the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy or King, those governmental records being made public “is also in the public interest.”

During his first term, Trump boasted that he’d allow the release of all of the remaining records on the president's assassination but ended up holding some back because of what he called the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/trump-boasted-hed-open-all-jfk-files-but-now-says-he-cant-2f48d57f9ee045d98eb784d2295288ef">potential harm to national security.</a>&nbsp;And while files have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-statutes-assassinations-lee-harvey-oswald-5b50bdcd246d228828b24f584ccad3ab">continued to be released</a>&nbsp;under President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/joe-biden">Joe Biden</a>, some still remain unseen.

Sabato, who trains student researchers to comb through the documents, said that most researchers agree that “roughly” 3,000 records have not yet been released, either in whole or in part, and many of those originated with the CIA.

The documents&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/united-states-government-77243c0452d743d8ac62d03c253b6057">released over the last several years</a>&nbsp;offer details on the way intelligence services operated at the time, and include CIA cables and memos discussing visits by Oswald to the Soviet and Cuban embassies during a trip to Mexico City just weeks before the assassination. The former Marine had previously defected to the Soviet Union before returning home to Texas.

King and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated within two months of each other in 1968.

King was outside a motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968, when shots rang out. The civil rights leader, who had been in town to support striking sanitation workers, was set to lead marches and other nonviolent protests there. He died at a hospital less than an hour later.

FBI documents released over the years show how the bureau wiretapped King's telephone lines, bugged his hotel rooms and used informants to get information against him. The agency’s conduct was the subject of the recent documentary film, “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/martin-luther-king-jr-d616aad776447a74f2c7367564f9cff4">MLK/FBI</a>."

Robert F. Kennedy, then a New York senator, was fatally shot on June 5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles moments after giving his victory speech for winning California’s Democratic presidential primary. His assassin,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/sirhan-sirhan">Sirhan Sirhan</a>, was convicted of first-degree murder and is serving life in prison.

There are still some documents in the JFK collection though that researchers don’t believe the president will be able to release. Around 500 documents, including tax returns, weren’t subject to the 2017 disclosure requirement. And, researchers note, documents have also been destroyed over the decades.

Ad Astra Books & Coffeehouse taking applications for Cash Hollistah Scholarship

A vehicle theft from a local motel on Wednesday evening led to the arrest of a Salina man after a brief pursuit along Interstate 70.

Shortly after 5 p.m., a guest at the Airliner Motel, located at 781 North Broadway, reported that his silver 2005 GMC Yukon SUV was stolen after he left it running while briefly going into his room. The 43-year-old victim identified the suspect as 47-year-old John Rogers, who was also staying at the motel.

Officers later spotted a vehicle matching the description of the stolen Yukon in the 2200 block of North Ninth Street, near Interstate 70. SPD officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but Rodgers continued eastbound on I-70 before pulling over near mile marker 253. He was arrested without incident.

 </figure>By SALINA POSTA vehicle theft from a local motel on Wednesday evening led to the arrest of a Salina man after a brief pursuit along Interstate 70.Shortly after 5 p.m., a guest at the Airliner Motel, located at 781 North Broadway, reported that his silver 2005 GMC Yukon SUV was stolen after he left it running while briefly going into his room. The 43-year-old victim identified the suspect as 47-year-old John Rogers, who was also staying at the motel. Officers later spotted a vehicle matching the description of the stolen Yukon in the 2200 block of North Ninth Street, near Interstate 70. SPD officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but Rodgers continued eastbound on I-70 before pulling over near mile marker 253. Judge Tyler Roush will sentence 34-year-old Vincent Perez&nbsp;&nbsp;who pleaded guilty in December to aggravated endangering a child and aggravated battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

She was safely extracted from the canal and transported to a local hospital for precautionary medical evaluation and later placed into police protective custody, according to Gupilan.&nbsp;Police believed Perez had information pertinent to the investigation and asked the public for assistance in locating him for questioning. The following day police booked&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=320252">Perez&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;into the Sedgwick County jail.&nbsp; &nbsp;Perez has previous convictions for theft, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, criminal possession of a weapon and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Sentencing Day for Kan. felon who left baby daughter in canal 

A Salina man was arrested Sunday night after damaging a police car during an unrelated disturbance at the Hastings Motel, 217 South Broadway Avenue in Salina.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, SPD officers were initially called to the motel around 8:30 p.m. for a disturbance between two 40-year-old residents. The dispute involved accusations of prior vehicle damage and claims that each party was armed, though it was later determined that only one subject was armed with a torch lighter. No charges were filed in connection with the incident.

"While officers were investigating this incident, a resident of the motel, identified as Ricky L. Hall, a 61-year-old Salina resident, had been in the parking lot yelling and cursing at officers," Feldman said. "He was not involved in the original call, but as an officer investigating the disturbance was speaking with hotel employees in the office, he heard loud banging and went outside and observed Hall with a logging chain striking the hood of a police car."

The officer intervened, ordering Hall to the ground at taser point. Hall complied and was taken into custody without further incident.

The hood and windshield of the police car sustained damage, estimated at $4,000. Hall was booked into the Saline County Jail on a charge of felony damage to property.

Salina man arrested for allegedly damaging police car with log chain

A 26-year-old Salina man was arrested Saturday night following an incident involving threats and a firearm at the Airliner Motel, 781 N. Broadway.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, officers were dispatched to the motel around 10 p.m. after they received a report of three male subjects attempting to access a room and making threats. 

"Contact was made with the 57-year-old motel employee who reported two white males and a black male attempting to get into a room at the motel. When he confronted them, asking what they were doing, he was told they had gotten locked out," Feldman said. "The employee told them they were not registered to the room and needed to leave, or he would call the police. The subjects then threatened to beat him up and began to leave."

Shortly after arriving at the scene, SPD officers spotted a white male matching the description of one of the suspects. The individual fled on foot. 

SPD officers established a perimeter and located the suspect hiding under a vehicle in the 700 block of North 11th Street. He was taken into custody without incident. During the search, officers recovered a 9mm handgun and marijuana in the area.

The suspect, identified as Gunnerkye Rairden, of Salina was booked into the Saline County Jail on multiple charges, including interference with law enforcement, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and criminal threat.

The investigation continued Sunday afternoon when officers located Sevijon Davis, who had a probation violation warrant, in the 800 block of North Fourth Street. 

Davis fled on foot but was apprehended in the 800 block of North Santa Fe Avenue. According to Feldman, Davis was wearing clothing that matched the description of another suspect involved in the threats at the Airliner Motel.

Davis was arrested on the warrant and an additional charge of criminal threat in connection with the motel incident. During his transport to the Saline County Jail, Davis allegedly threatened to shoot officers, resulting in further charges of criminal threat and interference.

Both suspects remain in custody, and the investigation into the incidents is ongoing.

Suspects arrested after threats, police chase near Salina motel

Virginia Ann (Horn) Luty passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, at Hoeger House Rehab Center in Olathe, KS, at 82 years of age.&nbsp; Born August 28, 1942, to Luther and Verda (Krehbiel) Horn, at McPherson Hospital in McPherson, KS, Virginia graduated from McPherson High School in 1960. On Valentine’s Day of her senior year, Virginia was engaged to her high school sweetheart, Robert Luty. Virginia and Bob married on July 23, 1961, at the First Baptist Church in McPherson. The young couple welcomed three children into their home and hearts, bringing them up in the First Christian Church. When the youngest started school, Virginia returned to college. In 1978 she received her BA, summa cum laude, from McPherson College in Elementary Education.

For 25 years, from 1978 to 2003, Virginia served the McPherson community as an exceptionally gifted teacher. Hundreds of sixth graders benefited immeasurably from her dedication to her calling. She worked tirelessly, including many overtime hours at home, creating an engaging curriculum and then sharing it with her students with passion and flair. Virginia was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1987. She was a founding member of the USD #418 Board of Trustees Community Education Foundation, and served two years on the Foundation’s board. Virginia served on the McPherson College Alumni board from 2005-09, and two years as president. In 2017, she was honored to receive the Citation of Merit Award from McPherson College.&nbsp;

As a homemaker, Virginia enjoyed cooking and celebrating, especially the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Homemade Christmas candies were her specialty, sharing platefuls of peppernuts and bonbons with family, friends and neighbors, a tradition she enjoyed handing down to her family. Virginia was an excellent seamstress, an expert knitter, and her beautiful scrapbooks will be treasured by future generations. She was a tennis player and a founding member of the McPherson Women’s Tennis Association. She and Bob became two of the first pickleball enthusiasts in McPherson.

Virginia and Bob treasured visiting their children and grandchildren, trips to Europe, special cruises to Alaska and Belize, and a 50th anniversary family trip to Myrtle Beach. Virginia loved being with her 16 grandchildren, encouraging and supporting them. In retirement, Virginia greatly enjoyed her book club, Friendship Club, BUNCO group, pickleball, and sharing her knowledge of McPherson history as a docent on the Visitors Bureau Trolley Tours.
