WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to begin its historic confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. The 51-year-old federal judge would be the first Black woman on the Supreme Court.

Barring a significant misstep by Jackson, Democrats who control the Senate by the slimmest of margins intend to wrap up her confirmation before Easter.

It’s not yet clear how aggressively Republicans will go after Jackson, given that her confirmation would not alter the court’s 6-3 conservative majority

Several Republicans who met with Jackson&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ketanji-brown-jackson-stephen-breyer-us-supreme-court-congress-josh-hawley-3fe43e01c9d9664c3b5ee18a04f5feb9">praised her&nbsp;</a>legal acumen, broad experience and engaging, empathetic demeanor. But some Republicans on the committee, especially those who might run for president in 2024, are expected to aggressively criticize her record. Jackson was nominated to replace Justice Stephen Breyer,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stephen-breyer-supreme-court-retirement-2f9c1f5da824e3b1ef25964205131fff">who announced in January</a>&nbsp;that he will retire at the end of the high court’s session this summer.

What to watch as Jackson’s hearings start Monday:

Similar to past practice, the committee will examine Jackson’s record over four days. She will give an opening statement on Monday, and members of the committee will give their opening remarks. She won’t face questioning until Tuesday and Wednesday, when the 22 committee members will each have 30 minutes to question her. If there is a second round of questioning, they will have 20 minutes each.

Jackson won’t be in the hearing room on Thursday, when legal experts and representatives of the American Bar Association testify on her legal record.

After the hearings conclude, the committee will vote on sending her nomination to the full Senate. Democrats hope to confirm Jackson by April 8, when they leave Washington for a two-week spring recess.

The court was made up entirely of white men for almost two centuries. Justice Clarence Thomas and the late Thurgood Marshall are the only two Black men who have been justices — confirmed in 1991 and 1967, respectively. There has never been a Black woman on the court.

Biden pledged during his 2020 campaign that he would nominate a Black woman to the court if he had the chance. Some Republicans criticized that pledge, saying it was “offensive” or akin to affirmative action.

But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he doesn’t have a problem with Biden’s pledge. He has signaled to his conference to focus on topics other than Jackson’s race.

Democrats can confirm Jackson without any Republican support because Vice President Kamala Harris can cast a tiebreaking vote in the 50-50 Senate. Democrats are still lobbying Republicans they think are open to voting for Jackson in hopes that she will be able to be seated on the court with some bipartisan backing.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins is the most likely Republican to support her, suggesting after a 90-minute meeting this month that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ketanji-brown-jackson-j-michelle-childs-stephen-breyer-us-supreme-court-susan-collins-09b8d396185a1c44bbfb068c59a574cd">she was inclined&nbsp;</a>to vote yes on confirmation. Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joined Collins in voting to confirm Jackson to the appeals court last year, but both have indicated that they may not vote for her this time.

It’s unlikely that any other Republicans will vote for Jackson, though most say they are waiting until after the hearings to decide.

Republicans who have met with Jackson have given varied reasons that they might not vote for her. They have cited her representation of Guantanamo Bay detainees as a public defender more than a decade ago, the liberal advocacy groups that support her and broad arguments that she may be “soft on crime” because of her record as a public defender.

The most pointed criticism so far has come from Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, who posted a lengthy Twitter thread Wednesday evening that charged her with being soft on pedophiles in her time at the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Democrats and the White House pushed back strongly on his arguments, claiming they were cherry-picked and void of context.

Many Republicans have been muted in their criticism of Jackson, preferring to focus on other election-year issues like inflation. But Hawley and GOP Sens, Ted Cruz of Texas and Tom Cotton of Arkansas, all committee members, are considering runs for the presidency in 2024 and may try and burnish their conservative credentials by attacking Jackson’s record.

Like Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s Senate hearings in October 2020, some health precautions will be taken in the committee room. Senators will be spaced out from each other and the general public will not be allowed in.

While the safety measures are to prevent the spread of COVID-19 amid a spate of recent cases in the Capitol, they will also serve the purpose of keeping protesters out. Angry protesters flooded the Senate hallways during the 2017 and 2018 confirmations of Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, but the public is just beginning to return to the Capitol for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic and the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection.

One country totally lacks a military! The Central American country of Costa Rica has not had a military since 1948. Their early history had armies and wars. Battles went back to the eventual overthrow of the Spanish empire in 1821. But after World War II was over, Costa Rica’s Defense Minister Edgar Cardona proposed abolishing the military and only maintaining a police force. This plan was taken to their constitutional assembly by Jose Figueres Ferrer. It was approved and amended their constitution in 1949.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Since then, the money that would have been spent on a military went into education, health care, and social security, providing a social stability that contrasts with the rest of Central America. For defense, their police force monitors their border and controls drug trafficking. A civilian guard can also be called upon to help in law enforcement. The attitude of always needing to fight enemies, the “military spirit” often common in other countries is absent in Costa Rica. &nbsp;

Switzerland has a long reputation for staying away from war. It does have an army with every young man trained from age 18 to 20. It is claimed that they can call up one-tenth of their population in case of an attack. If the United States had such a system, we could call up over 30 million! Yet the money spent on military in Switzerland was about 0.78 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020. In contrast, according to Statista, the U.S. spends 3.7 percent of our GDP on our military. Total U.S. expenditures on military are greater than the next twelve countries combined. And we are the major exporter of weaponry. We never listened to President Eisenhower when he warned us of the “military industrial complex.”

In trips to China universities, I often watch their noon news broadcasts. A decade ago they indicated that they were beginning to cut their army in half, from two to one million. In natural disasters, their Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) has functioned similar to our National Guard, rescuing citizens during floods, earthquakes and other disasters. However, discharging that many men could cause unemployment, so the drawdown has been gradual. New civilian fire and rescue teams have been built in part from ex-soldiers, while the remaining PLA is being modernized. Yet China only spends about 1.7 percent of its GDP on military, a figure that has remained constant for nearly three decades.

While China has one overseas base to equip their ships that help in the international patrols against piracy, the United States has well over 800 foreign military bases.&nbsp; And American attempts at nation building have been disastrous in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

But for the last decade, China has provided extensive aid to most countries in Africa as well as the array of central Asian countries extending from China to Europe (their “Belt and Road Initiative”) and has never interfered in those countries’ affairs. China’s formal policy of non-interference, written into treaties, recognizes that each country must evolve on its own from its prior history and culture.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Talk has begun again of a return to the “Cold War” or the possibility of a World War III. We are not Costa Rica or Switzerland. But we would be wise to remember that the former Cold War never became hot, thanks to a brilliant foreign service officer, George Keenan. He was the man behind the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and Eisenhower's foreign policy.

Kennan explained how our foreign policy really depends on our national strength and not military spirit. “National strength is a question of our internal strength, of the health and sanity of our own society.” He felt that “America could not and should not attempt to tell other people how they should live their lives--Americans’ moral responsibility was for their own lives.” The only way we could influence others was by example, not by preaching or coercion. He found American “exceptionalism” to be dangerous and warned against going on crusades to save the non-democratic world.

When asked how best to counter the Soviet threat, he replied that we had to take care of “...our American failings, to the racial problem, to the conditions in our big cities, to the education and environment of our young people, to the growing gap between specialized knowledge and popular understanding.” In 1952, he wrote in the&nbsp;New York Times: “Let us not attempt to constitute ourselves the guardians of everyone else’s virtue; we have enough trouble to guard our own.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

EDUCATION FRONTLINES: 'Military Spirit?'

I just started Baby Step 3 of your plan. It took me about 12 months to pay off $8,000 in debt during Baby Step 2. I am 50, and I work in the printing industry making about $38,000 a year in a city with no local or state income tax. I have not done a lot about retirement yet, and that worries me now that I am learning to manage money in a smarter way. How can I stay on track with the Baby Steps and still do something about retirement?

I generally look at a timeframe of six months to a year for saving a fully funded emergency fund. So, if it took you about a year to pay off $10,000 in debt, you’re probably looking at about the same length of time—or less, since the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/debt-calculator" target="_blank">debt</a>&nbsp;is gone—to save up an emergency fund. Keep in mind that an emergency fund is three to six months of&nbsp;expenses, not income.

But here’s the thing. If you start building retirement right now and have an emergency, do you know what you’ll use? Yep, you’ll use your&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/riq" target="_blank">retirement</a>. That’s why an emergency fund comes before retirement in the Baby Steps.

The median household income in America is around $68,000, and that’s often two incomes. You’re probably working pretty hard for that $38,000, so I would challenge you to think about and work toward something you could be doing in the near future to make that much money or more.

I want you to open your mind and imagination, and start thinking fresh again. Don’t do something silly like quit your job today, but if you’re going to be making $38,000 five or 10 years from now it’s time to aim at something else.

I’m trying to speak to your retirement fears, as well as warn you against addressing retirement without having an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/saving/what-to-do-after-using-emergency-fund" target="_blank">emergency fund</a>&nbsp;in place. Save up a solid emergency fund over the next year, while at the same time doing some serious thinking and goal setting.

🎥 Medical marijuana debate begins in Kansas Senate committee

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cited Pearl Harbor and the Sept. 11 terror attacks on Wednesday as he appealed to the U.S. Congress to do more to help Ukraine’s fight against Russia, but acknowledged the no-fly zone he has sought to “close the sky” over his country may not happen.

Livestreamed into the Capitol complex, Zelenskyy said the U.S. must sanction Russian lawmakers and block imports. He showed a packed auditorium of lawmakers a graphic video of the destruction and devastation his country has suffered in the war, along with heartbreaking scenes of civilian casualties.

“We need you right now,” Zelenskyy said, adding, “I call on you to do more.” In urging a steeper economic hit to the Russians, he said: “Peace is more important than income.”

Lawmakers gave him a standing ovation, before and after his short remarks, which Zelenskyy began in Ukrainian through an interpreter but then switched to English in a heartfelt appeal to help end the bloodshed.

“I see no sense in life if it cannot stop the deaths,” he told them.

Wearing a short-sleeved army T-shirt, Zelinskyy began his remarks by invoking the destruction the U.S. suffered in 1941 when Japan bombed the naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon by militants who commandeered passenger airplanes to crash into the symbols of Western democracy and economy.

“Remember Pearl Harbor? Remember September 11?” Zelenzkyy asked. “Our countries experience the same every day right now.”

Nearing the three-week mark in an ever-escalating war, Zelenskyy has been imploring allied leaders to stop the Russian airstrikes. President Joe Biden’s administration has stopped short of providing a no-fly zone or the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-poland-united-states-europe-warsaw-534cd345f7bcb5a08a21fc2244efb04f">transfer of military jets from neighboring Poland</a>&nbsp;as the U.S. seeks to avoid a direct confrontation with Russia.

The U.S. Congress has remain remarkably unified in its support of Ukraine and Sen. Angus King, the Maine independent. said there was a “collective holding of the breath” in the room during Zelenskyy’s address. Outside the Capitol a group of protesters held a large sign lawmakers saw as they walked back to their offices. “No Fly Zone=World War 3.”

Majority Whip Dick Durbin called the address heartbreaking and pledged to take on any action to stop the aggression on the Ukrainian people. “I’m on board with a blank check on sanctions, just whatever we can do to stop this Russian advance,” he said.

The Ukrainian president is no stranger to Congress, having played a central role in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-ap-top-news-elections-international-news-politics-0756fda2b5143891c5da1c6897001cee">Donald Trump’s first impeachment</a>. As president, Trump was accused of withholding security aid to Ukraine as he pressured Zelenskyy to dig up dirt on political rival Biden. Zelensky spoke on the giant screen to many of the same Republican lawmakers who declined to impeach or convict Trump, but are among the bipartisan groundswell in Congress now clamoring for military aid to Ukraine.

He thanked the American people saying Ukraine is “grateful” for the outpouring of support, even as he urged Biden to use his office to do more.

“You are the leader of the nation. I wish you be the leader of the world,” he sad “Being the leader of the world means being the leader of peace.”

Invoking Shakespeare’s hero last week, Zelenskyy asked the British House of Commons whether Ukraine is “to be or not to be.” On Tuesday, he appealed to “Dear Justin” as he addressed the Canadian Parliament and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Zelenskyy called on European Union leaders at the start of the war to do the politically unthinkable and fast-track Ukraine’s membership — and he has continued to push for more help to save his young democracy than world leaders have so far pledged to do.

To Congress, he drew on U.S. history and the faces of past presidents on Mount Rushmore in telling the lawmakers that people in his country want to live their our national dream, just like the you have,” he said. “Democracy, independence, freedom.”

Biden has insisted there will be no U.S. troops on the ground in Ukraine and has resisted Zelenskyy’s relentless pleas for warplanes as too risky, potentially escalating into a direct confrontation with nuclear-armed Russia.

“Direct conflict between NATO and Russia is World War III,” Biden has said.

Zelenskyy appeared to acknowledge the political reality of his request to “close the sky” as he seeks other military aid from the U.S.

“Is this to too much to ask to create a no fly zone over Ukraine?” he asked, answering his own question. “If this is too much to ask, we offer an alternative,” calling for weapons systems that would help fight Russian aircraft.

Already the Biden administration has sent Ukraine more than 600 Stinger missiles, 2,600 Javelin anti-armor systems, unmanned aerial system tracking radars; grenade launchers, 200 shotguns, 200 machine guns and nearly 40 million rounds of small arms ammunition, along with helicopters, patrol boats, satellite imagery and body armor, helmets, and other tactical gear, the official said.

This wasn’t the first time he Zelenskyy has appealed directly to Congress. Nearly two weeks ago, he delivered a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-volodymyr-zelenskyy-kyiv-business-europe-a0f619604ad19c50484e6a41eb02880c">desperate plea&nbsp;</a>to some 300 lawmakers and staff on a private call that if they could not enforce a no-fly zone, at least send more planes.

While officials are anticipating that Zelenskyy may once again call on the U.S. and the West for fighter jets or help establishing a no-fly zone, the Biden administration is looking to send Ukraine “more of what’s been working well,” according to an official who was not authorized to comment and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

“We think the United States needs to do more,” said Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., returning from a weekend visit with other lawmakers to Poland.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Zelenskyy asked for help in rebuilding his country when they spoke last week.

It was in that call that Zelenskyy asked for the opportunity to address the U.S. Congress, something the Democratic leader readily agreed to.

“The Congress, our country and the world are in awe of the people of Ukraine,” said Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in a statement Monday announcing the address.

They said Congress “remains unwavering in our commitment to supporting Ukraine as they face Putin’s cruel and diabolical aggression.”

Zelenskyy’s next stop could be Spain. The speaker of Spain’s Congress of Deputies has invited the Ukrainian president to address Spanish lawmakers via videolink.

In a letter to Zelenskyy, Speaker Meritxell Batet wrote that the address “will be a magnificent opportunity for the chamber, all Spanish people and the thousands of Ukrainians living in Spain to listen to your message and express our firmest support.”

House subcommittee agreed this week as they reviewed provisions that are
 likely to be included in the next farm bill.

“I represent a largely rural district in north-central, northeast 
Florida, and we have children who do their homework in a Hardee’s 
parking lot,” said U.S. Rep. Kat Cammack, a Florida Republican.

Students around the country scrambled to find internet access to 
participate in virtual learning when the pandemic limited in-person 
classes. It was a reminder that federal funds should be focused on 
providing broadband access to as many Americans as possible, Cammack 
said, rather than increasing the speeds of existing service.

Several members of the House’s Commodity Exchanges, Energy and Credit
 subcommittee echoed those concerns about so-called “overbuilding” of 
existing infrastructure during a Tuesday hearing that sought to review 
the rural development component of the next farm bill, which could be 
approved next year.

The current farm bill was last renewed in 2018 and partially expires 
next year. It’s a wide-ranging law that was expected to cost about $428 
billion over the course of five years. About three-fourths of that money
 is devoted to food assistance for low-income residents, and most of the
 rest goes to crop insurance, commodity support and land conservation.

Previous farm bills provided loans to develop internet 
infrastructure, but for the first time in 2018, lawmakers also 
established grants for the projects and raised the minimum speed 
thresholds that define whether an area has sufficiently fast access, 
according to the Congressional Research Service. The previous download 
speed considered sufficient was 4 megabits per second, which was 
increased to 25.

Xochitl Torres Small, undersecretary for rural development for the 
U.S. Department of Agriculture, said establishing broadband access for 
as many rural residents as possible is a paramount priority that must be
 balanced with other projects that will allow for speed upgrades.

“We certainly saw in the midst of COVID, with your kids who are 
sitting in the Hardee’s parking lot, that 25 (megabits per second) isn’t
 enough for them to be able to listen to their teacher and learn from 
home,” Torres Small said.

Lawmakers also created the ReConnect Program in 2018 that is separate
 from the farm bill’s Rural Broadband Program but has similar goals, and
 states have implemented their own programs.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson has made <a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/2022/01/19/governor-proposes-record-47-3b-missouri-budget-as-he-taps-surplus-federal-aid/">expanded rural broadband a priority of his administration</a>,
 proposing in his State of the State address this year $400 million for 
broadband access, with $250 million to reach approximately 75,000 
households without access to even moderately fast internet connections.

The devil’s in the details, and AD&amp;D policies are chock-full of them.&nbsp;

Gaining evening light but losing sleep: AAA cautions drivers to stay alert as they spring forward

WICHITA –&nbsp;Springing forward can mean falling back into a bad driving habit – drowsy driving. 

The arrival of Daylight Saving Time this weekend means one less hour of sleep, a darker morning commute and the potential for more sleepy drivers on the road.&nbsp;AAA is reminding drivers to adjust their sleeping habits along with their clocks, to stay alert behind the wheel&nbsp;and to look out for pedestrians, especially children who will be on their way to school and may be hard to see.

“When the time changes, sleep cycles are interrupted and drivers can be more tired than they realize,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “Losing one hour of sleep takes an adjustment, and drivers need to prepare by getting more rest, especially on Sunday.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 35% of U.S. drivers sleep less than the recommended minimum of seven hours daily. Previous&nbsp;<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d9%2c75%404-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=517018&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">AAA research</a>&nbsp;indicates that&nbsp;nearly all drivers (96%) say they view drowsy driving as a serious threat to their safety and a completely unacceptable behavior. However, 29% admitted to driving when they were so tired they had a hard time keeping their eyes open at some point in the previous month before the survey.

“Knowing the warning signs of drowsiness can help drivers avoid dozing off behind the wheel,” said Steward. “Symptoms include having trouble keeping your eyes open, drifting from your lane and not remembering the last few miles driven.”

Drivers however should not rely on their bodies to provide warning signs for drowsiness and should instead prioritize getting at least seven hours of sleep before hitting the road.

To avoid drowsy driving, AAA recommends that drivers:

●Travel at times of the day when they are normally awake

●Prioritize sleep, getting at least seven hours a night

●Avoid medications that cause drowsiness or other impairment

●Schedule a break every two hours or every 100 miles. 

●Travel with an alert passenger and take turns driving. 

●Do not underestimate the power of a quick nap. Pulling into a rest stop and taking a quick catnap ― at least 20 minutes and no more than 30 minutes of sleep ― can help to keep you alert on the roads

Losing an hour over the weekend may make drivers feel foggy for the Monday morning commute.&nbsp;The morning commute for several weeks to come, will be much darker than what drivers have been used to in the last few weeks.&nbsp;It’s important for drivers to be alert and remember that children will be on their way to school and may be hard to see. ●Slow down. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed than a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.

●Stay alert. Drivers should always avoid distractions while driving, but it’s particularly important in school zones and residential neighborhoods.

●Headlights. Turn on the vehicle’s daytime running lights or headlights—even during the day—so children and other drivers can see you more easily. But, don’t forget to turn them off when you reach your destination to maintain your battery life.

●While walking, pocket the cell phone and avoid listening to music/audio player at a volume that prohibits you from hearing approaching danger.

 ●Cross at intersections or crosswalks - not in the middle of the street or between parked cars.&nbsp; Do not jaywalk.

●Avoid walking in traffic where there are no sidewalks or crosswalks. If you have to walk on a road that does not have sidewalks, walk facing traffic.

●Evaluate the distance and speed of oncoming traffic before you step out into the street.

●Wear bright colors or reflective clothing if you are walking near traffic at dawn, dusk and night. Carry a flashlight when walking in the dark.

 ●Allow extra time and distance for a vehicle to stop in inclement weather.

●Do not let umbrellas or jacket hoods block your view of approaching traffic.

Tired drivers are not as focused and while there is more daylight, they are still at risk of being distracted. First responders, construction workers and people stranded with a breakdown on the side of the road are vulnerable to drivers who are not paying attention and are at a greater risk of being hit.

●It's not just tow providers and other emergency responders being killed on the side of the road. Since 2015, over 1,600 people have been struck and killed while outside of a disabled vehicle.

To protect roadside workers, drivers stranded with a breakdown, and others, AAA offers these tips:

●Remain alert, avoid distractions and focus on the task of driving.

●Keep an eye out for situations where emergency vehicles, tow trucks, utility service vehicles, or disabled vehicles are stopped on the side of the road.

●When you see these situations, slow down and if possible move one lane over and away from the people and vehicles stopped at the side of the road.

Since Daylight Saving brings more hours of light, drivers may not use their headlights as often. But when they do, a lack of visibility at night can make for unsafe driving conditions. Changing the clocks is a good reminder to check the conditions of your headlights.

●With 50% of crashes occurring at night, drivers should check their headlights for signs of deterioration and invest in new headlights or, at a minimum, a low-cost headlight cleaning and restoration to boost the safety of driving after dark. Headlights can show signs of deterioration after three years but most commonly by Year 5.

●AAA suggests drivers check their headlights for changes in appearance such as yellowing or clouding. If the bulb is difficult to see, it is time to have the lens replaced or restored as soon as possible. Replacement and restoration services are available at most repair shops, including&nbsp;AAA approved auto repair&nbsp;facilities. Do-it-yourself restoration offers some savings for consumers, is relatively simple, and provides a sufficient improvement in light output. Make sure headlights are correctly re-aimed to maximize forward lighting performance and minimize glare to oncoming and preceding drivers.

AAA: Switch to Daylight Saving Time brings drowsy driving dangers

Lonnie’s life began on February 9, 1949, in the town of Goessel, Kansas.&nbsp; He was the son of Leo J. and Luanna Mae (Wedel) Buller.&nbsp; Lonnie graduated from Moundridge High School in 1968.&nbsp; Lonnie was united in marriage to Carol Kay (Crowell) on May 17, 1980, in Douglass, Kansas.

For 35 years, Lon was the emergency management coordinator for Harvey County.&nbsp; He was involved in the Kansas Emergency Management Association where he served as president three times, area vice-president as well as various other committees.&nbsp; Lon was on the board of both the Whitewater Fire District and the Richland Township.&nbsp; He started in 1978 as a volunteer for the Hesston Fire and Ambulance Departments.&nbsp; Lon was an original member of the Kansas Division of Emergency Management training cadre.&nbsp; He taught other emergency managers in the state as well as training the local emergency services.&nbsp; Lon was a member of South Central Kansas Homeland Security Council and the IAEM.&nbsp; During his career he also was the chair of the Harvey County Communication Board and chair of the Critical Incident Stress Management Board Team.

Lon was a member of the Central States Rocky Mountain Horse Association.&nbsp; Lon was an animal person and enjoyed his cats, dogs, camping and taking his horses on trail rides, and snow skiing.&nbsp; Lon’s hobbies included wood working, where he made various items, including toy boxes for his grandchildren.

Lon was a people person and truly enjoyed the time he and&amp; Carol owned and operated the Hawk House Bed &amp; Breakfast.&nbsp; He listened to the stories from the people who stayed with them, representing 43 states and nine countries in the course of the five years they owned the B&amp;B.

Lon is survived by his wife Carol of Whitewater; son Jory of Wichita; daughter Michelle (Jerry) McNutt of Sierra Vista, AZ; grandchildren Erica Buller of Woodbury, MN; Katrina Cannady of Woodbury, MN; Jerrod (Katie) McNutt of Augusta, KS; great-granddaughter, Zayla McNutt; and brother Larry (Betsy) Buller of Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; 

Lon passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.&nbsp; 

He is preceded in death by his parent, Leo and Luanna. 

His family and friends will gather for a Celebration of Life on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Whitewater Community Church, Whitewater, Kansas.&nbsp; Lamb Funeral Home of Whitewater is serving the family.&nbsp;

Cynthia’s life began on August 31, 1955, in Sioux City, Iowa. She was the daughter of Dale and Eunice (Boyer) Christensen. Cynthia was a 1973 graduate of Marion High School and attended Flint Hills Technical College. 

She spent much of her adult life serving others, including working at Marion Assisted Living, caring for the elderly in their homes, and preparing meals at Marion Elementary. Cynthia had a servant’s heart and being a caregiver came naturally to her. 

She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, dancing, cooking, serving others, listening to live music, and being outdoors. Family was the cornerstone of her life.&nbsp; She took great pride in her family and enjoyed spending quality time with her two grandsons, who affectionately referred to her as “Nana.”

She is survived by her daughter Kayla (Brock) McClain and grandsons Maxwell and Barrett McClain of Overland Park, twin sister Cindy (Glen) Sisson of Council Grove, sister Sherie (John) Mulvenon of Marion, loving companion Ron Makovec of Lincolnville, former spouse David Barrett of Emporia, and several nieces and nephews. 

Cynthia passed away in her home under the loving care of Good Shepherd Hospice and surrounded by her close friends and family on Sunday, March 6, 2022. 

A celebration of Cynthia’s life will be held Saturday, March 19th at 10:30 a.m. at the Marion Christian Church. Burial will be at the Marion Cemetery. Yazel Megli Funeral Home is serving the family.

Marvin LeRoy Harrison, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the age of 82.

He was born to John E. and Ruby I. Harrison in Flagler, Colorado, July 21, 1939.

Marvin worked for Jim Palmer Trucking, hauling over-the-road for 27 years.

He was preceded in death by&nbsp; his parents John E. Harrison on July 8, 1966 and Ruby I. Harrison on February 7, 2000; his sister Wanda Rutledge, brother George Harrison, and sister Ruth Taylor, and his daughter Judy Gaston on October 29, 2021; and son Bruce Harrison on December 5, 2021;&nbsp; also preceding him in death is his beloved wife of 52 years,&nbsp; Margarete W. Harrison, passing away on December 17, 2015.

He is survived by three sons, Otis (Joyce) Harrison of Salina, Michael (Rebecca) Harrison of Union, MS., and Brian (Gloria) Harrison of Las Vegas, NV and eight grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2022, be at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel’s Friendship Room, 1920 East Crawford St., Salina.

A private interment will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Memorials maybe made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Parkinson Foundation in care of Roselawn Mortuary, P.O. Box 2322, Salina, KS. 67402-2322.
