K-State Previews Oklahoma State Game at Weekly Press Conference

NEW YORK (AP) — Aggrieved and defiant, former President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;sat through hours of sometimes testy opening statements Monday in a fraud lawsuit that could cost him control of Trump Tower and other prized properties.

“Disgraceful trial,” he declared during a lunch break, after listening to lawyers for New York Attorney General Letitia James excoriate him as a habitual liar. The state's lawsuit accuses the business-mogul-turned-politician and his company of deceiving banks, insurers and others by misstating his wealth for years in financial statements.

“They were lying year after year after year,” Kevin Wallace, a lawyer in James' office, said as Trump sat at the defense table. He looked straight ahead, arms crossed, facing away from a screen that showed details of Wallace's presentation.

Defense lawyers, in response, said the financial statements were legitimate. Trump's holdings are "Mona Lisa properties" that can command top dollar, attorney Alina Habba said.

“That is not fraud. That is real estate," she said, accusing the attorney general's office of "setting a very dangerous precedent for all business owners in the state of New York.”

Trump voluntarily attended a trial that he called a “sham," a “scam,” a waste of the state's time and “a continuation of the single greatest witch hunt of all time.” Currently the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2024-presidential-candidates-who-is-running-e89fbfee94e7e7980594a9ce3994fec7">Republican front-runner</a>&nbsp;in the 2024 presidential race, he reiterated claims that James, a Democrat, is trying to thwart&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2024-presidential-candidates-who-is-running-e89fbfee94e7e7980594a9ce3994fec7">his bid to return to the White House</a>.

“What we have here is an attempt to hurt me in an election,” he said outside court, adding: “I don’t think the people of this country are going to stand for it.”

Trump sneered at James as he passed her on his way out at lunchtime; she, by turn, left smiling. Meanwhile, his campaign immediately began fundraising off the appearance.

Judge Arthur Engoron ruled last week that Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-letitia-james-fraud-lawsuit-1569245a9284427117b8d3ba5da74249">committed fraud in his business dealings</a>. If upheld on appeal, the ruling could force Trump to give up New York properties including Trump Tower, a Wall Street office building, golf courses and a suburban estate. Trump has called it a “a corporate death penalty” and insisted the judge is unfair and out to get him.

The non-jury trial concerns six remaining claims in the lawsuit, including allegations of conspiracy, falsifying business records and insurance fraud. Engoron said that neither side sought a jury and that state law doesn't allow for juries when suits seek not only money but a court order setting out something a defendant must do or not do.

James is seeking $250 million in penalties and a ban on Trump doing business in New York.

“No matter how powerful you are, and no matter how much money you think you have, no one is above the law," she said on her way into the courthouse.

Trump isn’t expected to testify for several weeks. His trip to court Monday marked a remarkable departure from his past practice.

In a recent court filing, James' office alleged Trump exaggerated his wealth by as much as $3.6 billion.

He claimed his three-story Trump Tower penthouse, replete with gold-plated fixtures, was nearly three times its actual size and worth $327 million, far more than any New York City apartment ever has fetched, James said. He valued Mar-a-Lago as high as $739 million — more than 10 times a more reasonable estimate of its worth, James maintained.

“Every estimate was determined by Mr. Trump," Wallace said in his opening statement. He pointed to pretrial testimony by Trump Organization figures and ex-insiders including Cohen, who said the company estimated assets to get to a predetermined number “that Mr. Trump wanted.”

Wallace said the alleged scheme got the company better loan rates, saving it $100 million in interest.

“They hid their weaknesses and convinced these banks to take on hundreds of millions of dollars in risk," he said, adding: “While the defendants can exaggerate to Forbes magazine or on television, they cannot do it while conducting business in the state of New York.”

Trump lawyer Christopher Kise said defense experts will testify that assigning values to properties is, by nature, a matter of opinion.

“There is no such thing as objective valuation,” Kise said in an opening statement.

Any discrepancies in values don't amount to fraud, he said, and disclaimers on the financial statements made clear that these were estimates and that banks would have to perform their own analysis.

Trump and his lawyers have also argued that no one was harmed by anything in the financial statements. Banks that made loans to him were fully repaid. Business partners made money. And Trump's own company flourished.

Kise blasted last week’s fraud ruling, telling the judge he shouldn't have made a decision before hearing expert trial testimony on property valuations. Engoron, tiring of the defense’s criticism, shot back: “Respectfully, what’s that expression? You’re stalking the dead horse here.”

Testimony began Wednesday afternoon with Donald Bender, a longtime partner at accounting firm Mazars LLP, describing how he spent 50 to 60 hours a year preparing Trump's financial statements. LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Following its first loss of the season, Kansas (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) returns home to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium to host UCF (3-2, 0-2 Big 12) on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. CT for the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

The game will air on FOX&nbsp;with Jason Benetti (Play-by-Play), Brock Huard (Analyst) and Allison Williams (Sideline) on the call.

Saturday’s contest against UCF also serves as the Ring of Honor induction ceremony for two Kansas football legends, Tony Sands and Nick Reid. The Kansas football Ring of Honor is the highest honor bestowed upon Kansas football letterwinners, as Sands and Reid become the 24th and 25th members to be inducted into the Ring of Honor. The Ring of Honor induction will take place during halftime of the UCF game on Saturday.

UCF is one of the four newest members to the Big 12 Conference, as the Jayhawks and Knights square off for the first time in program history. Both teams are coming off losses, as Kansas fell to No. 3 Texas, 40-14, on Sept. 30, while UCF has dropped back-to-back Big 12 games against Kansas State (Sept. 23, 31-44) and Baylor (Sept. 30, 35-36).

Kansas is 3-0 at home this season with wins against Missouri State (Sept. 1, 48-17), Illinois (Sept. 8, 34-23) and BYU (Sept. 23, 38-27). Since the start of the 2022 season, Kansas is 7-2 in its last nine home games. UCF makes its second trip to the State of Kansas over a span of three weeks.

Kansas is led by an offense that is averaging 442.4 yards of offense per game and 199 rushing yards per game. The Jayhawks were without quarterback Jalon Daniels in the loss at Texas, who was named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year. Kansas’ rushing attack of Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw Jr. have combined for nine rushing touchdowns this season, while Hishaw has scored 10 touchdowns (9 rushing, 1 receiving) over his last nine games played.

Defensively, the Jayhawks have the ninth most tackles-for-loss nationally (41), bolstered by defensive ends Jereme Robinson and Austin Booker. The KU duo has combined for 8.5 sacks through five games this season, which is the third-most among teammates in the NCAA this season. Kansas defensive backs Mello Dotson and Cobee Bryant have held down the secondary for the Jayhawks with Dotson ranking fifth nationally in passes defended, paired with Bryant’s two interceptions this season.

UCF enters the weekend with the No. 1 offense in the Big 12 Conference, averaging 545.8 yards per game through the first five games. Quarterback John Rhys Plumlee has missed the last three games due to injury, as Timmy McClain has stepped in to complete 50-of-82 for 872 yards and seven touchdowns. UCF is coming off a 36-35 loss to Baylor, in which Baylor overcame a 29-point deficit to defeat the Knights in Orlando.

Following Saturday’s contest with UCF, the Jayhawks will be back on the road on Saturday, Oct. 14 when they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Kansas and Oklahoma State have faced off 73 times in series history, which dates back to 1923. The two teams have&nbsp;met in each season since 2010. Last season, the Jayhawks defeated OSU for the first time since 2007 with a 37-16 win over the then-No. 18 Cowboys at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. The victory was the sixth win of the season for Kansas and secured KU its first bowl berth since 2009.&nbsp;

This will mark KU’s first appearance on FS1 during the 2023 season and ninth overall during head coach Lance Leipold’s tenure. The Jayhawks were 2-2 in games televised on FS1 last season, including the victory over OSU in Lawrence.

The Jayhawks are 4-1 on the year and 1-1 in Big 12 play following a 40-14 defeat at No. 3 Texas on Saturday. Kansas started the season 4-0 for the second consecutive season and reached No. 24 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll prior to the setback.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Oklahoma State is 2-2 (0-1 Big 12) and coming off its&nbsp;open&nbsp;week as the Cowboys defeated Central Arkansas and Arizona State to open the season before falling to South Alabama and Iowa State. OSU hosts Kansas State on Friday, Oct. 6 prior the matchup with the Jayhawks.&nbsp;

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs appeared on their way to a blowout against the struggling New York Jets.

A few mistakes by the star quarterback made it uncomfortably close, but he and the Chiefs shook off a subpar performance during which they blew a 17-point lead and then held on for a 23-20 victory Sunday night.

“I knew I put us in two bad positions,” said Mahomes, who was intercepted twice. “No one points fingers in that locker room. We all play together. Not everything is going to be pretty, but the guys responded and we found a way to win.”

With pop superstar&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-chiefs-jets-1b1b3ba43139acefcbdf52072b018154">Taylor Swift watching Travis Kelce and the Chiefs</a>&nbsp;for the second straight game, this time from a suite at MetLife Stadium, Kansas City was able to bounce back.

After the Chiefs (3-1) regained the lead on Harrison Butker’s 26-yard field goal with 10:51 remaining, Zach Wilson made his first big mistake for the Jets when he lost a snap. Tershawn Wharton recovered and Mahomes and the Chiefs got the ball at the Jets 47.

Michael Carter II intercepted Mahomes on third-and-20 from the Jets 40 — but it was negated by a holding call on Sauce Gardner. Replays showed it was a questionable call and an irate Jets coach Robert Saleh stormed down the sideline to shout at an official.

“Fourth quarter, crunch time," Gardner said. "I don’t even know what to say.”

Mahomes, who had a 25-yard run on third-and-23 to extend the drive, ran for 9 yards on another third down to the Jets 2, sealing the victory.

“Listen, I thought it was a hold,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who tied Tom Landry for fourth on the career list with his 250th regular-season victory. “I've got to go back and look at the tape on it. He was on the other side of the field. They’re aggressive, so they’re going to get a couple of those during the game. Sauce is as good as there is in the league, but he might have had a little bit of fabric there.”

Moments later, a still-angry Saleh was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty — and the clock hit zero on a bitter loss for the Jets (1-3).

“Just that whole drive after the fumble was unfortunate,” Saleh said. “That’s extremely unfortunate, especially for a prime-time football game.”

Mahomes, who became the fastest to 200 NFL touchdown passes, was 18 of 30 for 203 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 51 yards to set the franchise's career rushing mark for a quarterback. Isiah Pacheco rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, and Kelce had six catches for 60 yards.

"It was a lot of hard grinding tonight," Pacheco said.

Wilson had his best game since taking over for the injured Aaron Rodgers, going 28 of 39 for 245 yards and two touchdowns. But he blamed himself for the loss because of the lost fumble.

"To be driving right there, to drop a snap, I can not do that,” Wilson said.

Trailing 20-12, Wilson and the Jets opened the second half with the ball and marched down the field. Wilson found Allen Lazard in the middle of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown pass. The quarterback then avoided a tackle attempt, rolled out and zipped forward for a 2-point conversion that tied the game at 20.

It appeared it would be a blowout early when Pacheco slipped a tackle attempt by Micheal Clemons in the backfield on third-and-1, made a move downfield and then zipped into the end zone for a 48-yard touchdown that made it 10-0.

Mahomes threw the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-patrick-mahomes-200-touchdown-passes-19a81d6761a2b0919b5e5fd141186c77">200th touchdown pass</a>&nbsp;of his career, reaching the milestone in his 84th game to break Dan Marino’s NFL record when he connected with Noah Gray on a 34-yard score with 3:24 left in the first quarter. Marino threw his 200th TD pass in his 89th NFL game with Miami in 1989.

The Jets got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter when Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor was called for a facemask penalty on Bryce Huff in the end zone, resulting in a safety.

The play seemed to breathe some life into New York's offense and Greg Zuerlein's 31-yard field goal made it 17-5.

Ashtyn Davis intercepted Mahomes' throw to Gray to open the Chiefs' next possession, and New York took advantage.

After Randall Cobb extended the drive by reaching out for a first down on third-and-5 to the 19, wide receiver Xavier Gipson gained 14 yards on an end-around to put the ball at the 5. Two plays later, Wilson found C.J. Uzomah for a 1-yard TD to cut the Jets' deficit to 17-12 with 6:26 left in the half.

Butker's 37-yarder made it 20-12 with 2:15 remaining in the second quarter.

The Jets chose to try a field goal instead of going for it on fourth-and-1 from the Chiefs 34 in the waning seconds of the first half, but Zuerlein hit the right upright from 52 yards.

Former Jets star defensive lineman Joe Klecko received his Pro Football Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence during a halftime ceremony.

Klecko, who also served as the Jets’ honorary captain for the pregame coin toss, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, in August. He played for the Jets from 1977-87 and was the heart of the team's “New York Sack Exchange.”

Chiefs: LB Cole Christiansen left in the second quarter with a hamstring injury and didn't return.

Jets: CB Brandin Echols injured a hamstring in the second quarter and was ruled out.

Earlier this month on Sept. 19 Salina residents spent time at the Carver Center learning about where the candidates for Salina City Commission and USD 305 School Board stand on issues. The event was well attended, with standing room only during the school board portion of the forum.&nbsp;

Four of the six Salina City Commission candidates were in attendance.&nbsp;

Commission candidates Haley Helzer and Robert Klingenberg were not present.

Four other commission candidates, Chad Farber, Mike Hoppock, Trent Davis, and Jerry Ivey II, discussed issues such as high property taxes, homelessness, immigration, affordable housing, and the desire of some residents to reorganize the city commission's representation structure to allow for districts rather than at-large positions.&nbsp;

The forum, which began at 7 p.m., allowed for one hour of questions from both Picking and the forum audience.&nbsp;

IVEY "We have a lot of great nonprofits in Salina that are willing to help the homeless, the true homeless that that needs to help that have lost their jobs and just can't make it. I guess from a city level it would be in my opinion to help the nonprofit agencies like&nbsp; the Salina Food Bank,&nbsp; The Rescue Mission and Catholic Charites." HOPPOCK "We put a camping ordinance into place, which is helping some. It's amazing that things aren't quite as simple as they seem. "A lot of people come here for help. And an example of this is The Rescue Mission. People go there and they [the Mission] try to sober someone up, they try to get them back into the workforce. But if they don't follow the rules, they get kicked to the street. To me, that's a poor Plan B. And so we've got to figure out how to work with these agencies." FARBER "This is not just a local problem. This is everywhere. I think as far as DC and Topeka what they can do to help us. I don't think there's a whole lot they can do. This is a local concern that we're going to have to deal with locally. The biggest concern for most of Salina when we talk about homelessness is safety. Some people are homeless because of a bad decision or a bad choice in their life. Some people were there simply because they couldn't afford a place to stay. And that goes back to some of our high rent costs here in Salina. We need to do what we can to help them with compassion." DAVIS "Washinton D.C. and Topeka can help us with money. I'm not talking $100,000 I'm talking millions of dollars. We've been focusing downtown on the homeless people. Until we focus on homelessness. There will always be new homeless people to take the place of the one or two people that we know until we start getting to the root causes. You got to help the people that you see. A lot of people did not choose to get this way they ended up this way. But just like the person with depression, they get so deep they don't have the ability to pull themselves up by the bootstraps. They don't have anything to pull themselves up. It's going t be a massive community effort."

Position on changing the structure of city government to include districts

DAVIS "I personally like the city manager/City Commission model, because you get five people who were elected one night in November. They don't become experts on sewage pumps and roads overnight. I don't really want to know the pipe size engineering needs to buy for certain things, or how thick of concrete we need to pour, we pay people to make those decisions."

"Our city commissioners act as a strategic board. I've learned that there are advantages to dividing the town into wards and that you get representation in each part of the city. A big disadvantage potentially is that one board holds a project hostage because it didn't get what it wants. So there are pros and cons plus you have people who will move into the ward just to get elected. There are ways to game the system." FARBER "My grandfather just turned 91 years old. He wasn't even born when this form of government was brought to Salina. It's time for a change and the reason I say that is not a political one," Farber said. "I believe that if we break our city into districts, more people will, whether perceived or reality, feel their voices heard more. Each district will have its own representative therefore that Representative answers directly to those that segment of his constituents instead of an at-large like like we have now who answers to the entire city."

"There are people on the north side who I have spoken to who don't feel like their voice matters in city government. There are people in the the west side who don't feel like their voice matters and city government. But let's also have a couple of commissioners elected at large. Let's keep the balance in our city checks and balances. I would also love for our mayor to be elected instead of just passed around as a paper title from one person to another." HOPPOCK "I think our current form of government currently works well. I understand the idea of districts from being on the commission for six years and also from following city government for many years," Hoppock said. "I've yet to see a commission that really said, 'No' to doing something in its service of the community. It's kind of I don't want to say funny, but Mr. Farber's yard signs say 'A voice for the People.' Well, if you voted for a district, are you still a voice for all the people or just a district? I'm a voice for the whole community and not just a district."

"I don't believe we are large enough to have districts. How many times in the county elections do we have one person running? I don't understand what we gain by an elected mayor. If two of your better candidates run for mayor and one doesn't get elected do they not get elected onto the commission? Again.&nbsp; I think it's a perception that we get more people involved if we district I really honestly I'm not sure that we would.&nbsp;I don't just represent the part of the community I live in. will pave streets everywhere. We are redoing in the older parts of town we're replacing water lines." IVEY "I don't think Salina is big enough to have districts. If you're talking five districts, if we leave it kind of where it is now that's 10,000 people, one person representing 10,000 people. I'd prefer to see five people representing the whole city of Salina. As far as the mayor goes, I looked up the same thing Chad did last time around since it was 2021. So it was 100 years ago that we switched over to the form of government that we have now and I just you know it's been working that long and it's been working well."

"I just don't see a reason to change it just to be changing something. As far as the paper title, I think you earn the mayorship. You have to be one of the top two out of the three to get those two people to earn it by votes. It's more than just a paper title.&nbsp; As many of you know my grandpa was mayor in 1984 and I was proud of the fact that he was like he was the mayor and I didn't consider it just a title."

One of the citizens who attended the forum raised the question of whether or not illegal immigrants were being bussed to Salina and whether that was contributing to the homeless issue.&nbsp;Each candidate was allowed to respond. IVEY "I keep hearing from people that illegal immigrants are being bussed into Salina and I honestly don't think it's happening," Ivey said. "A lot of people bring up the buses by Harbor Freight by Kraft Manor in that area and I do know for a fact that that's where a lot of the Hispanic population goes and to buy tickets so they take that bus to go back and visit family in Mexico."

"I think that'd be perceived as people, you know, illegal immigrants being bused into this, this town.&nbsp; That'd be a good question probably to ask the police department and what they're seeing." DAVIS "I wouldn't really worry about the ethnicity of the people who are homeless. They're homeless. 99% of us in this room, technically, were illegal immigrants to the western coast of the Atlantic Ocean. That's how this country was built. We should be glad, in a way, that other people want to come here most immigrants coming here want to work. A lot of the American industry is based on immigrants taking jobs that native-born Americans won't take anymore."

"Not saying that you should open up the gates but don't look down on people who came here because life was miserable where they lived." HOPPOCK "I would say there's been an increase in homelessness it appears it's more visible right now. I have a business it's two blocks from the bus stop on Seventh Street and I drive by there at least four times a day that the number will vary anywhere from four to a dozen people there and none of them appear to be Hispanic to me. I do agree with Commissioner Davis that the problem we have is a mental health issue in this country."

"Years and years ago the government had to stop putting money towards mental health, and so we have more people on our streets dealing with mental health. Some of them do wish to live that way." FARBER "We do have a huge crisis at our southern border. Let's not downplay that. But a lot of the homeless that I have dealt with and interacted with, specifically those that are on Seventh Street are not the Hispanic population," Farber said. "As far as bussing people in I personally have not seen evidence of it. There are all kinds of stories that go around. I believe it's [homelessness] has become more visible. The more we talk about it, the more we notice things when we talk about them. So I think that may be a question for our police department. They may have a little bit more insight into that.

"But homelessness and our border crisis, a lot of times go hand in hand. Perhaps that is the case a little farther west from here. We're seeing a little bit more of that. I've seen some of that in some of our western cities. But as far as Salina I haven't seen an increase in Hispanic homelessness."

Future COVID-19/public health restrictions

Clarke Sanders, Republican State Representative, 69th District was in attendance for the forum. Sanders asked the candidates whether or not they would be in favor of implementing another mask mandate or restrictions on businesses, should COVID-19 infection rates spike again.&nbsp; DAVIS "I'm a little slanted because part of my job is keeping everybody in this room alive, myself included," Davis said. "We are very fortunate that we are smug and arrogant enough to sit here and talk about what happened the last time because we weren't part of the 1 million people who died. So whatever it takes to keep our population alive and our economy growing. When I listened to what my parents went through during World War II, the rationing they think we're wusses. 'Just put on the damn mask and go to work.' That is what they would say. They didn't have shoes they didn't have tires. Communities got wiped out because folks didn't get vaccinated."

"The City of Salina did not lay off a single employee. Our economy survived. And thank God we live in Kansas where we were somewhat socially isolated. So I would not worry about what we're going to do ahead of time just to make sure that we're nimble enough on our feet and open-minded enough to come up with the best solution, whatever it is." FARBER "New York City is where it was tyranny. I was very outspoken last time this went through and I am completely against mandating the people by the government. Studies have proven that masks were ineffective against this and I know Dr. Davis, he's a physician He understands the size of the micron particles of the virus and that those masks are ineffective and harmful in some cases. I'm not so much against masks I'm not so much against closing down businesses as much as I am against the government telling the people what they can and cannot do. We fought a war against that. To get this country started."

"Of course, the city commission overstepped its bounds. They mandated what people should do for their health. They shut down businesses and I've heard that was sent down by the state - no - those were city ordinances that were passed. They were not repealed and it was a shame that it was a shame. We got funding from the state and our budget looked really good because we kept getting all those state dollars. But I am completely against the government. mandating what people should do."

HOPPOCK "Well, I had the pleasure of being Mayor in 2020, and first of all, I'm going to look at Commissioner Davis when I say this, We didn't shut down any businesses, did we? I didn't think so. That was the state," Hoppock said. "That was the state that did that. In fact, I'm a small business owner. I was upset that they allowed Lowe's and Menards to stay open and all the boutiques downtown had to close. So I disagree with the way that was handled. Now the masking you've got to realize that the information we had was changing, not only weekly, the daily sometimes. I remember in my office, we were wiping everything down. That was to protect myself, my customers, and my employees.

"There are different philosophies on whether the masks helped or not. You know, we did what we thought was best. You have to realize again, that I represent all the people. Some people didn't think COVID-19 was a real thing. I had part of my constituents who wore masks to bed at night. That's what I dealt with. So we tried to do what we thought was best. And I don't think wearing a mask killed anybody. Didn't have to like it. Will we do it again? I don't know. I hope we don't even have to deal with that. But what we did back in 2020 - You may not agree with but we did the best we could with the information we had." IVEY "When COVID started, it was a scary thing. No one knew. Absolutely no one knew, what it was and what was going on. So I can't put any blame on the commission at that time for doing what they did," Ivey said. "The only complaint I had was kind of towards the end. I think it went on a little too long. But I digress on that. Let's take what we learned from the first time and apply it if it does come around again this time. If you need to wear a mask, wear a mask."

"If you want to get your vaccination and you believe that that works, get your vaccine, but but don't tell me to do it.&nbsp; So as far as mandating it, no."

Several forum attendees voiced concerns about possible gang activity in the City of Salina. Each candidate was allowed to respond.

IVEY "If there are gang members in this town then they need to be dealt with by the Salina Police Department," Ivey said. "As a possible city commissioner, I'm a huge proponent of the police department. I've always backed the police department.

"If they were to come to us and say 'Hey, we need help,' establishing a Task Force or we need more equipment then we need to get them equipped to handle the gangs. Personally, I don't know if there's anything we can do other than support our law enforcement in that situation." HOPPOCK "I think we need to give our police department all the resources necessary to deal with whatever it is whether it's gangs or drugs," Hoppock said. " I have not heard of the gang problem in the community. I'd have to ask the police department for more information. But they haven't come to us saying we need more help. I know we have some drug issues in the community like every other community does and we deal with those as best we can."

"No matter how many police officers we hire, we can't be everywhere all the time. And we do have a shortage of police officers. We've been trying to increase that number. We did a pay study a year ago and we've increased the pay of a lot of our city employees with the police department being a part of that trying to recruit more employees at least in the city." FARBER "Immigration I am not against. I think a healthy country has a certain amount of immigration. I am against illegal immigration. We've tried to change the names, you know what these folks are, and the truth is, they are committing a crime by coming into our country illegally. As I mentioned earlier our border is wide open on the south and we do have gang members coming across and we do have terrorists coming across and we do have drugs coming across and we have sex trafficking taking place. Yes, there are gangs in Salina."

"I'm out in the community enough to know there are gangs it's alive.&nbsp; I don't know specifically about MS-13. The best way to combat that and I think both of these fellows have said it the right way we need to fund our police department and we need to support our police department. They are a strong line of defense between those who observe the law and those who break the law. I was very disappointed when I heard Mr. Davis I believe it was at Central High School graduation where he praised the young people for beginning and supporting the Sunflower Coalition. And as most of us know one of the main purposes of the Sunflower Coalition, way back when, was to defund the police. We don't need that in Salina."

"Our commissions lately have been doing a wonderful job of funding our police department it needs to continue that way. Our police department needs to be respected as far as immigration there are gangs there is trouble. There are drugs, there is sex trafficking, and drug trafficking going on in Salina and we need to support our police department there are dangerous dangerous positions every day." DAVIS " I get to address the sunflower coalition remark and I praised the Sunflower Coalition as a group of high school students who took on a task and were successful in civic action. It didn't matter the outcome, it was that they got involved in a conflict. They did revamp and improve our Police Advisory Board. I spoke with him and I told them defunding the police was not going to work. I said if everything you want done happens, we're going to have to increase the funding for police, not defund.

"As far as gangs take time with your kids. Make sure you know where your kids are. Give them options in life other than joining a gang. Most kids join gangs because they're missing that direction and attention at home. Don't let your absence be their stimulus to join the gang. You have to support police but supporting police means you have to call them and say 'Hey, there's something going on.'"

"As far as the location of where the gangs come from, I don't know whether you'd be more comfortable if the gangs came from Russia, Sweden, France and Germany. Doesn't matter where they come from. It's what they're doing. And one of the worst terrorists we've had in this country, were homegrown terrorists. Oklahoma City Bomber, where did he come from? God, we should be embarrassed it was Kansas. So you know, we got to worry about what's going on here.

"I agree. Illegal Immigration is the issue. Immigration itself as far as gangs, Salina Police Department is always going to be too small. You need cooperation between federal, state, and local enforcement. These are regional and international gangs, one little city alone is not going to stop it."

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, so he did good last week. You know he’s been doing it a while, so you’re going to get a good day’s work and see how things fall. He works extremely hard at his job, and you know I think every snap he gets he becomes more familiar with it.”

Q:&nbsp;We asked Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo about how he felt about not getting the matchup of Jets QB Aaron Rodgers vs. Patrick Mahomes – from a football fan perspective. Do you have any thoughts on that?

REID:&nbsp;“Well listen, I’m a big (Jets QB) Aaron Rodgers fan, but I like the kid (Jets QB Zach Wilson) that they have. And I know Aaron’s been helping out with him, so we tried to work hard at making sure we got that part taken care of so that’s where I’m at. I haven’t really thought about the other part of that as we try to get ready for the guys that are there right now.”

Q:&nbsp;Are you thinking Noah Gray will be good to go this weekend?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, he’ll be able to go. He practiced today, yeah.”

Q:&nbsp;With the way the offense played last week, Patrick Mahomes has said that the run game helps with the zone defense. Do you foresee even more of that in the future to try to get more of that involved in the game?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, you know we try to do what’s best as things go. You know we always have runs built in there so it’s not all passes, and we understand the importance of it. So they’ll be mixed in there again. We’ll just see how things go.”

Q:&nbsp;You’ve had a lot of new Chiefs fans pop up this week. What’s your message to them?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, it’s a great venue (GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium), and we appreciate everything. That’s a good thing. That’s about what I’ll give you.”

Chiefs Quotes, Head Coach Andy Reid 

WASHINGTON —House Republicans launched a formal impeachment hearing Thursday against President Joe Biden, saying they intend to “provide accountability” as they&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-hunter-house-republicans-impeachment-inquiry-f679eb1239cd4f7b5f06949cc1445567">make their case</a>&nbsp;to the public, their colleagues and skeptics in the Senate.

Near the end of the morning session, Kansas second district Representative Jake LaTurner finally had his turn to make a statement.

"The&nbsp;mischaracterization of what this hearing is about by my colleagues on the other side is astounding," LaTurner said.&nbsp;

"Throughout the Presidency of Joe Biden, the White House has attempted to claim that the President did not talk to his son Hunter about his business dealings. Joe Biden even said during a 2020 presidential debate that no members of his family received money from China."

"Joe Biden said and I quote, "My son has not made money in terms of this thing about China. Nobody else has made money from China."

"The White House strategy has been to&nbsp; deny, deny and deny, lie and then counter attack," LaTurner continued. "The evidence and facts have forced the White House to change its story time and time again."&nbsp;

"The White House handlers continue to shift the goal posts and President Biden continues to lie. How can President Bident continue to maintain that Hunter's private business was simply that,&nbsp; private?"

"It's clear from bank records, emails and text messages and testimony that Joe Biden was intimately involved in Hunter's pay to play scheme and crooked foreign business dealings."

"This image shows an email between Hunter Biden and his business associates stating the setup of equity in a Chinese owned energy venture. This particular business deal was with a Chinese owned energy conglomerate and lays out the payment structure for equity in the company which was known to be tied to the Chinese Communist Party through its owner chairman."

"The committee's investigation into the Biden family including evidence turned over through various document production has shown that these men including&nbsp;Tony Bobolinski were all in business with Hunter Biden at one time or another."

"Bobolinski, Rob Walker and other Hunter business partrners have confirmed what this email said. They were all getting a cut. Who else was getting a cut? According to this email 10 percent was going to the Big Guy. What I'm sure my colleagues on the other side are asking themselves, who is the Big Guy?"

"Well let me tell you," LaTurner continued. "We learned in the FBI's 1023 that Joe Biden was referred to as the Big Guy. Tony Bobolinski has also confirmed Joe Biden is the Big Guy. Rob Walker and IRS whistle blowers confirmed that Joe Biden is the Big Guy. And finally, the Justice Department obstructed investigators in Delaware wanted to look into the Big Guy."

"Listen folks, it is obvious Joe Biden is the Big Guy. And so, what do we have here? The President is saying that he had nothing to do with it. That Hunter Biden did not profit from China and the Big Guy was getting 10 percent."

"Let me read for you the definition of a trendy word here lately. Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which an abuse attempts to gain power and control over the other person by distorting&nbsp; reality and forcing them to question their own judgement and intuition."

"I would say to the American people. Look at the evidence before you and make a judgement and do not allow the White House or our colleagues on the other side to try to convince you that what you are seeing isn't the truth and to convince you that you are crazy."

By D. SCOTT FRITCHEN MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State welcomed UCF to the Big 12 Conference, and DJ Giddens said hello to one of the Wildcats’ more memorable individual performances in recent years in a 44-31 win before a much-needed bye week.

Giddens had 30 carries for 207 yards and four touchdowns and added eight receptions for 86 yards for the Wildcats while scoring on runs of 1, 9, 18 and 3 yards. However, one of his biggest plays came when he didn’t even reach paydirt. With the score tied 24-24 late in the third quarter, Giddens caught a third-down swing pass from Will Howard and gained 16 yards for a first down.

That’s really what it was.”From there, the Wildcats, 3-1, steadily pulled away from the Knights, 3-1, who played in their first conference game as a Big 12 member in front of a crowd of 51,912 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. As the fourth quarter wore on, K-State head coach Chris Klieman became more animated on the sidelines, cheering on his players after key offensive and defensive plays.The Wildcats’ victory comes off the heels of a heartbreaking three-point loss at Missouri on a last-play 61-yard field goal last Saturday.“What a win by our guys and our team coming off a difficult loss last week,” Klieman said. “We talked here that we couldn’t let Missouri beat us twice, and our kids rose up. We played an excellent football team. UCF is really talented. We knew this was going to be the type of game it was — back and forth.”Howard completed 27-0f-42 passes for 255 yards and tossed one interception, and he rushed for two scores after entering the week questionable to play. He proved capable and grew stronger toward the end — rushing for a 31-yard score for a 44-24 lead.“I knew I was playing all week for sure,” Howard said. “Once the adrenaline got going, I was fine.”“It was a huge win,” Howard continued. “Any game in this conference is tough, especially a team like that that’s new to the conference, which wanted to come in and make a stamp. That’s a tough team. It was a big win.”Timmy McClain completed 14-of-24 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns and one interception. McClain’s favorite target, Kobe Hudson, had five catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Johnny Richardson had six carries for 76 yards.“I was proud of our guys because whether it was throwing the ball vertical or handing it to (Richardson), they can score from anywhere, and we held them essentially to 24 points,” Klieman said. “We did some good things on defense. We’ve got to get better but we did some good things.”K-State out-gained UCF 536 to 407 in total offense. The Wildcats were balanced with 281 rushing yards and 255 passing yards while running off 82 total plays.“We got back to the ‘Beef’ identity tonight,” said All-American left guard Cooper Beebe. “We knew coming into this game we had to control the clock. We knew the type of offense they had. They’re a high-paced, explosive offense. We had to control the game.”The Wildcats gave up scoring plays of 27, 69 and 46 yards but stiffened at critical times as the Knights were 5-of-12 on third down. The Knights had 10 penalties, including several delay-of-game penalties due to crowd noise.“We’re 1-0 in league play going into an open week,” Klieman said. “Couldn’t be more thrilled. We’re by no means a finished product. We have to get a lot better as a football team. We’re still growing and learning as a team, but it was exciting to come back home in front of a great sellout crowd. Our crowd was phenomenal tonight. They were a big factor in a number of delay-of-game penalties they had in the fourth quarter.”UCF came out of halftime and struck immediately as Hudson reeled in a 46-yard pass from McClain for a 24-21 lead. Then K-State answered as Chris Tennant tied it at 24-24 with a 30-yard field goal.Things stayed that way until the Wildcats made their charge and Howard connected with Giddens before he kept the ball and rolled into the end zone.It wasn’t until running back RJ Harvey scored a 1-yard run with 3 seconds left that the Knights added to their scoring total. By then, the K-State Marching Band had already played, “Happy Trails.”And there was rightfully much happiness in Manhattan.“It’s awesome to start this tough conference 1-0,” tight end Ben Sinnott said. “It’s very deep and very competitive. We had a bunch of ups and downs to battle. Any game you can come out with a victory and rally guys together and push through brings a team closer.”Giddens finished with 293 scrimmage yards, third-most in school history and only behind Darren Sproles’ total of 323 scrimmage yards against Oklahoma in the 2003 Big 12 Championship Game and his 298 yards against Louisiana in 2004.Giddens had 14 carries for 107 yards and three touchdowns and six catches for 66 yards in the first half alone. He got K-State on the scoreboard first when he busted a 36-yard run up the middle to set up his 1-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. It marked Giddens’ first touchdown of the season. It gave K-State a game-opening touchdown drive in four straight games for the first time since at least 1990.K-State’s momentum was short lived.UCF took the lead, 10-7, after it followed a 29-yard field goal with a 57-yard touchdown drive following a Howard interception. McClain sucked in the defensive front and completed a pass to Harvey in the flat and the running back raced down the sideline and into the end zone with 1:47 left in the first quarter to snatch the lead from the Wildcats.But the Knights’ lead didn’t last long. Howard fired back on a 12-play, 84-yard charge in which he alternated between run and pass. He hit Giddens on a short pass that he turned into a 24-yard gain. Five plays later, Giddens cut outside and outraced defenders to the right pylon for a 14-10 advantage.Giddens was just getting started.“I’m glad DJ got to show the world what we see in practice at all times,” Beebe said. “I love that kid to death.”Kobe Savage forced a fumble and VJ Payne recovered the football at the UCF 38-yard line, and Giddens went to work. He carried four times and followed a 16-yard rush up the middle with an 18-yard touchdown for a 21-10 lead.When K-State saw a drive stall, UCF quickly went to work. McClain handed off to Harvey who tossed the ball back to McClain on a flea-flicker, and Hudson got 15 yards behind the defensive secondary for a 69-yard catch-and-run to draw to within 21-17.Jacob Parrish came up with the Wildcats’ defensive play of the first half when he got underneath a McClain pass for an interception at the UCF 39-yard line.But the feisty Knights wouldn’t go away until the Wildcats were able to clamp down and keep them out of the end zone for most of the final two quarters.“This shows us where we’re at,” UCF head coach Gus Malzahn said. “We’ve got to play really good. We have to play disciplined. We didn’t do the things that it takes to get a quality win against a really good opponent on their home field. We still have a really good football team.”Coming off a close loss at Missouri, K-State appears to have a really good team as well.“We strive on overcoming adversity and always talk about average teams get destroyed by adversity and good teams survive it and great teams get better because of it,” Klieman said. “That’s what we want to be, a great team. We have to continue to get better because of the adversity.”
