My name is Dana Kossow, and I am asking for your vote for re-election to the USD 305 School Board. As a current School Board member, I have worked to ensure&nbsp;the district has held firm to our mission of being the&nbsp;best place to learn and work by embracing challenges, creating belonging, fostering pride, and inspiring hope. During the past four years, I have put time and energy into understanding the complexity of our school district. I would appreciate the opportunity to use the knowledge I have gained to continue positively impacting all Salina Public Schools.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize or improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of students in our community? Teacher/Staff retention is a major priority. The BOE and District Office Team have begun the work needed to address this problem, but there is still work to be done. One change initiated this year was to give student teachers a stipend. We know that teachers are more likely to stay where they student teach. Because of this change, we have increased student-teacher numbers in our buildings and attracted student-teachers from colleges that have traditionally not come to Salina to student-teach.&nbsp;6.In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue?&nbsp;&nbsp;I do not believe in book banning. USD 305 has policies that give the parents control over what their child has access to. Each school website has a library tab that gives library policies and parental oversight instructions. All parents are given the option of providing expressed permission before their student checks out any book.&nbsp; Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents and educators?&nbsp; &nbsp;In the past two years, I have seen incredible changes in how USD 305 creates community involvement and parental engagement. Superintendent Exline has inserted herself into the community with listening sessions in various locations. These sessions have been open to all parents and community members.&nbsp;Dr. Curtis Stevens, Director of Secondary Education, and his team have amplified USD 305's relationships with community businesses by creating the Building Bridges program. By inviting parents and community members into our schools, we are telling Salina that we are proud of our schools and want people to feel welcomed and invited to be part of the growth we hope to see with our new mission statement and strategic&nbsp;planning goals.&nbsp;

Saline County Jail Activity, Oct. 17

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 8:30a.m. Monday,&nbsp;the Barton County Sheriff’s Office executed search warrants at two separate locations in the City of Great Bend, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir. Sheriff’s deputies and detectives had been working for several weeks on a cocaine distribution investigation.

Warrants were served simultaneously in the 2200 block of Heizer Street and in the 1700 block of Washington Street. Sheriff’s officers located cocaine, currency, firearms and drug paraphernalia. The Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Great Bend Fire Department to force entry into a safe. The firemen were successful and further evidence was found.

At the Heiser Street location, deputies arrested 31-year-old Fausto Hernandez, Junior of Great Bend and booked him on requested charges of distribution of cocaine and criminal use of a firearm. He’s being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond. Fausto Hernandez also had an outstanding warrant for attempting to flee and elude, which carries an additional $1,000 bond.

Evidence found at the scene implicates other individuals and further arrests are expected.

Saline County Jail Activity, Oct. 14-16

LOS ANGELES (AP) —Suzanne Somers, the effervescent blonde actor known for playing Chrissy Snow on the television show “Three’s Company” as well as her business endeavors, has died. She was 76.

Somers had breast cancer for over 23 years and died Sunday morning, her family said in a statement provided by her longtime publicist, R. Couri Hay. Her husband Alan Hamel, her son Bruce and other immediate family were with her in Palm Springs, California.

“Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16th,” the statement read. “Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”

In July, Somers shared on Instagram that her breast cancer had returned.

“Like any cancer patient, when you get that dreaded, ‘It’s back’ you get a pit in your stomach. Then I put on my battle gear and go to war," she told Entertainment Tonight at the time. "This is familiar battleground for me and I’m very tough.”

She was first diagnosed in 2000, and also had skin cancer. She faced some backlash for her reliance on what she's described as a chemical-free and organic lifestyle to combat the cancers. She argued against the use of chemotherapy, in books and on platforms like “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which drew criticism from the American Cancer Society.

Somers was born in 1946 in San Bruno, California, to a gardener father and a medical secretary mother. She began acting in the late 1960s, playing the blonde driving the white Thunderbird in George Lucas’s 1973 film “American Graffiti.” Her only line was mouthing the words “I love you” to Richard Dreyfuss’s character.

At her audition, Lucas just asked her if she could drive. She later said that moment “changed her life forever.”

Somers would later stage a one-woman Broadway show entitled “The Blonde in the Thunderbird,” which drew largely scathing reviews.

She appeared in many television shows in the 1970s, including “The Rockford Files,” “Magnum Force” and “The Six Million Dollar Man,” but her most famous part came with “Three’s Company,” which aired on ABC from 1977 to 1984 — though her participation ended in 1981.

On “Three’s Company,” she was the ditzy blonde opposite John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt in the roommate comedy. In 1980, after four seasons, she asked for a raise from $30,000 an episode to $150,000 an episode, which would have been comparable to what Ritter was getting paid. Hamel, a former television producer, had encouraged the ask.

“The show’s response was, ‘Who do you think you are?’” Somers told People in 2020. “They said, ‘John Ritter is the star.’”

She was soon fired and her character was replaced by two different roommates for the remaining years the show aired. It also led to a rift with her co-stars; They didn’t speak for many years. Somers did reconcile with Ritter before his death, and then with DeWitt on her online talk show.

But Somers took the break as an opportunity to pursue new avenues, including a Las Vegas act, writing books, hosting a talk show and becoming an entrepreneur. In the 1990s, she also became the spokesperson for the “Thighmaster.”

Somers returned to network television in the 1990s, most famously on “Step by Step,” which aired on ABC’s youth-targeted TGIF lineup. The network also aired a biopic of her life, starring her, called “Keeping Secrets.”

 </figure>LOS ANGELES (AP) —Suzanne Somers, the effervescent blonde actor known for playing Chrissy Snow on the television show “Three’s Company” as well as her business endeavors, has died. She was 76.Somers had breast cancer for over 23 years and died Sunday morning, her family said in a statement provided by her longtime publicist, R. Couri Hay. Her husband Alan Hamel, her son Bruce and other immediate family were with her in Palm Springs, California.“Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16th,” the statement read. “Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”In July, Somers shared on Instagram that her breast cancer had returned.“Like any cancer patient, when you get that dreaded, ‘It’s back’ you get a pit in your stomach. Then I put on my battle gear and go to war," she told Entertainment Tonight at the time. "This is familiar battleground for me and I’m very tough.”She was first diagnosed in 2000, and also had skin cancer. She faced some backlash for her reliance on what she's described as a chemical-free and organic lifestyle to combat the cancers. She argued against the use of chemotherapy, in books and on platforms like “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which drew criticism from the American Cancer Society.Somers was born in 1946 in San Bruno, California, to a gardener father and a medical secretary mother. She began acting in the late 1960s, playing the blonde driving the white Thunderbird in George Lucas’s 1973 film “American Graffiti.” Her only line was mouthing the words “I love you” to Richard Dreyfuss’s character.At her audition, Lucas just asked her if she could drive. She later said that moment “changed her life forever.”Somers would later stage a one-woman Broadway show entitled “The Blonde in the Thunderbird,” which drew largely scathing reviews.She appeared in many television shows in the 1970s, including “The Rockford Files,” “Magnum Force” and “The Six Million Dollar Man,” but her most famous part came with “Three’s Company,” which aired on ABC from 1977 to 1984 — though her participation ended in 1981.On “Three’s Company,” she was the ditzy blonde opposite John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt in the roommate comedy. In 1980, after four seasons, she asked for a raise from $30,000 an episode to $150,000 an episode, which would have been comparable to what Ritter was getting paid. Hamel, a former television producer, had encouraged the ask.“The show’s response was, ‘Who do you think you are?’” Somers told People in 2020. “They said, ‘John Ritter is the star.’”She was soon fired and her character was replaced by two different roommates for the remaining years the show aired. It also led to a rift with her co-stars; They didn’t speak for many years. Somers did reconcile with Ritter before his death, and then with DeWitt on her online talk show.But Somers took the break as an opportunity to pursue new avenues, including a Las Vegas act, writing books, hosting a talk show and becoming an entrepreneur. In the 1990s, she also became the spokesperson for the “Thighmaster.”Somers returned to network television in the 1990s, most famously on “Step by Step,” which aired on ABC’s youth-targeted TGIF lineup. The network also aired a biopic of her life, starring her, called “Keeping Secrets.”

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two Kansas teens on drug allegations.

Just after 6p.m. Thursday, sheriff's deputies conducted a traffic investigation on a 2015 black Volkswagen Passat for an alleged stop sign violation, according to Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade.

During the traffic investigation, deputies noticed an odor of burnt marijuana emitting from inside the vehicle. Deputies identified the driver as 18-year-old&nbsp; Trinity L. Schlegel of Neodesha, Kansas and the passenger as 18-year-old&nbsp; Quaylan M. Johnson of Independence, Kansas.

Deputies recovered a total of 972 suspected fentanyl pills also known as “Dirty 30s”, marijuana, and US currency associated with illegal narcotic distribution, and drug paraphernalia.

Both Schlegel and Johnson were taken into custody and transported to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections and booked on the recommended charges of distribution of opiates, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Kansas Bureau of Investigations (KBI), 7 out of 10 pills that have been recovered and tested by the DEA for fentanyl contain a potentially lethal dose. KBI laboratory submissions testing positive for fentanyl have increased over 900% from 2020 to 2022.

Sheriff Wade said, “The war on drugs is a revolving door and fentanyl has reared its head here in Montgomery County. The Sheriff’s Office has seized over 6,460 fentanyl pills since 2022.

When they were 12 years old, Breanna and Brooke were inspired to give period supplies to girls in a public housing project in Montgomery, Alabama, kicking off what became their organization, Women in Training, through which they have distributed more than 30,000 kits with sanitary pads and toiletries. Breanna and Brooke have also successfully advocated for the passage of HB 50, a state law in Alabama that provides funds for school staff to provide sanitary pads to students in need. They are committed to building on that success and eliminating period poverty at the national level.

Jazmin Cazares, age 18, is a leading activist for gun violence prevention at the state and national level. After her sister Jackie was killed in the shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, Jazmin spent her senior year of high school traveling across the country and sharing Jackie’s story. Jazmin spoke alongside March for Our Lives leaders at the Texas State Capitol and testified before lawmakers. There, she called for tighter background checks, extreme risk protection order laws, and for lawmakers to “do something” to prevent future mass shootings. Jazmin plans to obtain a master’s degree in psychology and to continue fighting for her sister’s legacy.

Mona Cho (Redondo Beach, California)

Mona Cho, age 15, is dedicated to combatting online harassment and abuse and the harm it poses to youth and teens. She serves on the Beach Cities Health District’s Youth Advisory Council and is also part of the District’s newly created Youth Health &amp; Safety Committee, where she leads a team of five students in a campaign to spread awareness on how to stay safe on social media, and to prioritize mental health online. As part of this work, she created a short film that follows real-life stories of the impact of damaged digital footprints. Through the Plan USA Youth Leadership Academy, she leads the Digital Online Safety and Empowerment Initiative. Mona hopes to continue deploying film as a tool to promote online safety and call for change.

Julia Garnett (Hendersonville, Tennessee)&nbsp;

Julia Garnett, age 17, is dedicated to fighting against book bans and promoting educational freedom in public school and county public libraries. In her school district, she advocated successfully for student representation on book review committees and served on her own high school’s committee. At the national level, Julia has provided testimony before Congress on book bans and volunteers with Student Advocates for Speech, a partnership with the National Coalition Against Censorship. She is an organizer and leader on multiple issues, planned a Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, led a student walkout in protest of gun violence, and served as the President of her school’s Gay-Straight Alliance. Julia is committed to ensuring that youth grow up free from censorship, with access to books that fully represent the diversity of their communities and the world.

Logan Hennes, age 16, is committed to combatting antisemitism in communities across the country. Through the American Jewish Committee, Logan has created and taken on a leadership role in supporting students like herself who are working to address antisemitism in their schools and communities, such as Logan’s community in New York City. As the leader of her high school’s Jewish Affinity Group, she has hosted speakers to raise awareness of rising antisemitism and supported her peers in similar organizing and advocacy work across other communities and issues. Logan plans to pursue a career in international relations and U.S. foreign policy.

Anja Herrman (River Forest, Illinois)&nbsp;

Anja Herrman, age 17, is a disability rights activist and advocate for equity and inclusion. She has led grassroots disability advocacy work, including as a member of the Personal Protective Equipment for People with Disabilities (PPE4PWD Coalition), which helped secure personal protective equipment for people with disabilities during the COVID–19 pandemic. Since 2021, she has served as the youngest appointed member of the Village of River Forest’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Group. Anja is emerging as a national leader through her research, speaking engagements, and publications. She authored a white paper that highlights the need for school shooting plans that account for the safety of students with disabilities through a fellowship program at the Disability EmpowHer Network.

Leela Marie Hidier (Yarmouth, Maine)&nbsp;

&nbsp;Leela Marie Hidier, age 18, is a climate social justice advocate and published author. Her award-winning debut novel, Changes in the Weather, features four teenagers displaced by climate change in the U.S., coming of age in a world and time of uncertainty. Leela Marie has been invited to read from her work and speak at community centers, schools, climate conferences, the Maine State House, and across her state. Currently on a gap year, she is working in the nonprofit sector in Maine before beginning college next year. She aspires to become an educator, and to continue using art as a form of activism

Elisa Martinez (Las Vegas, Nevada)

Elisa Martinez, age 17, is an organizer dedicated to civic engagement, particularly within the Latino community. She founded her school’s Latino Student Union and mobilizes students on issues such as climate justice and gun violence prevention. Elisa volunteers as a poll worker to assist Spanishspeaking voters and ensure they understand their rights. After losing her friend to a fentanyl overdose, Elisa has spoken out about beating the opioid crisis and has joined the Trial by Peers program to advocate for juveniles in the criminal justice system. Elisa hopes to become a public defender.

Gabriella Nakai (Phoenix, Arizona)

Gabriella Nakai, age 17, is a Navajo and Choctaw leader dedicated to furthering food security and sustainability, indigenous sovereignty, and youth advocacy. For her work in growing sustainable, heirloom Native produce and promoting seed saving and propagation, Gabriella was honored by the Center for Native American Youth at the Aspen Institute as a 2023 Champion for Change. Gabriella works with Native American Connections on addressing youth homelessness and mental health in Phoenix. She founded the Native American club at her school, is a leader in her student government, and hopes to continue serving her tribal community through nonprofit work.

Zahra Rahimi (Alexandria, Virginia)

Zahra Rahimi, age 17, arrived in the U.S. four years ago from Afghanistan, and has since dedicated herself to supporting refugee resettlement in her local community, including access to English as a Second Language services in Alexandria schools. As student representative to the Alexandria City Board of Education, Zahra organized cultural events and staff trainings to ensure the school was prepared to receive new refugee families from Afghanistan. Zahra partnered with Northern Virginia Resettling Afghan Families Together to establish a special literacy program to support her largely female middle and high school peers who were reading below a second-grade level. In addition to her refugee resettlement efforts, Zahra is a passionate advocate for advancing women’s rights globally, especially in areas of conflict.

Gitanjali Rao (Highlands Ranch, Colorado)

Gitanjali Rao, age 17, is a freshman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a scientist and inventor whose groundbreaking lead contamination detection tool won her an EPA Presidential Award and America’s Top Young Scientist by Discovery Education/3M. Her book Young Innovator’s Guide to STEM, which offers a prescriptive five-step innovation process, is used as a STEM curriculum globally in selected schools. Time Magazine’s first-ever Kid of the Year, Gitanjali is committed to not only continuing her career as a scientist and inventor, but expanding her STEM education initiative, which has already touched more than 80,000 elementary, middle, and high school students.

Avery Turner (Colorado Springs, Colorado)

Avery Turner, age 17, is a high school senior and calls herself a “seasoned mover,” having moved 10 times before her father recently retired from the Air Force. Avery is committed to supporting military teens, and currently serves as the Director of Programs at Bloom, an organization started by military teens dedicated to promoting their belonging within the military community and amplifying their voices. A prolific writer, as well as a nationally-ranked competitive springboard diver, Avery writes about her experiences trying to find her place in the ever-changing landscape of military teen life in the hopes of providing connection and community.

Sandra Ukah, age 18, a freshman at the University of Florida, is committed to civic education and community organizing. She was co-founder and co-president of Seminole High School’s Black Student Union, the first Black Student Union (BSU) in Seminole County, and she later consulted with district members to establish BSU chapters in all of the county’s high schools. Sandra served on her city’s Youth Council for two years and became president, during which time she launched an initiative on civic education to teach her community about the role of local government, host voter registration drives, and connect government to the community. Sandra hopes to work in civil rights and constitutional law.

Rania Zuri (Morgantown, West Virginia)

Rania Zuri, age 18, is a third-generation West Virginian and the founder and CEO of The LiTEArary Society, a nonprofit organization focused on ending “book deserts” for disadvantaged preschool children. Since Rania founded the organization at 13 years old, it has grown to donate books to over 28,000 preschool children in federal Head Start programs across all 50 states. The organization has received funding and partnerships from Pilot Pens, Hershey’s, Scholastic, Starbucks, and others. Rania plans to continue this work with the belief in the power of reading to transform lives.

Gabriella works with Native American Connections on addressing youth homelessness and mental health in Phoenix. Sandra served on her city’s Youth Council for two years and became president, during which time she launched an initiative on civic education to teach her community about the role of local government, host voter registration drives, and connect government to the community. Sandra hopes to work in civil rights and constitutional law.Rania Zuri (Morgantown, West Virginia)Rania Zuri, age 18, is a third-generation West Virginian and the founder and CEO of The LiTEArary Society, a nonprofit organization focused on ending “book deserts” for disadvantaged preschool children. Since Rania founded the organization at 13 years old, it has grown to donate books to over 28,000 preschool children in federal Head Start programs across all 50 states. The organization has received funding and partnerships from Pilot Pens, Hershey’s, Scholastic, Starbucks, and others. Rania plans to continue this work with the belief in the power of reading to transform lives.

Just after 3p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for theft in the 1300 block of Anderson Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Kwik Shop reported a known female suspect took books of lottery tickets, activated them and cashed out winning tickets. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000.

WICHITA (AP) — A rare&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ring-of-fire-eclipse-what-to-know-df2bd3b1d69854421f241bf9b49cf123">“ring of fire” eclipse of the sun</a>&nbsp;cuts across the Americas on Saturday, stretching from Oregon to Brazil.

For the small towns and cities along its narrow path, there was a mix of excitement, worries about the weather and concerns they'd be overwhelmed by visitors flocking to see the celestial event, also called an annular solar eclipse.

Unlike a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/11d5c10bf3be44c994eedab6e39f4e6f">total solar eclipse</a>, the moon doesn’t completely cover the sun during a ring of fire eclipse. When the moon lines up between Earth and the sun, it leaves a bright, blazing border.

Saturday’s path: Oregon, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Texas in the U.S., with a sliver of California, Arizona and Colorado. Next: Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Brazil. Much of the rest of the Western Hemisphere gets a partial eclipse.

Viewing all depends on clear skies — part of the U.S. path could see clouds. NASA and other groups planned to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlY79zjud-Q&amp;ab_channel=NASA">livestream it</a>.

With a chance of rain in its forecast, the small town of Reedsport near Oregon's Pacific Coast moved its eclipse festival inside so that a bounce house and games wouldn’t get soaked in the mud.

"But we’re still hoping that we might get a glimpse of it,” said city official Rosa Solano.

Weather was less of a concern in tiny Baker, Nevada, where the population hovers around 100. Inn and general store owner Liz Woolsey made T-shirts and planned a slate of activities including a drum circle and a dance party. Her seven rooms have been booked for over a year.

“For a little place, we’re putting on a good show," said Woolsey, who became an eclipse enthusiast after seeing the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/11d5c10bf3be44c994eedab6e39f4e6f">2017 total solar eclipse</a>&nbsp;that swept the U.S. from coast to coast.

Tens of thousands could get a double treat in Albuquerque, New Mexico. For the city's annual air balloon fiesta, which ends this weekend, hundreds of colorful hot air balloons lift off around dawn, hours before the eclipse briefly dims the skies.

Colombia’s Tatacoa desert was playing host to astronomers helping a group of visually impaired people experience the eclipse through raised maps and temperature changes as the moon blots out the sun.

At the Cancun Planetarium, young visitors built box projectors to indirectly and safely view the ring of fire. The ancient Maya — who called eclipses “broken sun” — may have used dark volcanic glass to protect their eyes, said archeologist Arturo Montero of Tepeyac University in Mexico City.

Towns and national parks in the path braced for a huge throngs. Officials in Oregon's Klamath County urged residents to stock up on groceries and fill their gas tanks in case traffic backs up on its two-lane highways. Utah's Bryce Canyon expected Saturday to be the park's busiest day of the year, spokesperson Peter Densmore said. Brazil's Pedra da Boca state park, known for its rocky outcrops for climbing and rappelling was also expecting crowds.

The entire eclipse — from the moment the moon starts to obscure the sun until it’s back to normal — is 2 1/2 to three hours at any given spot. The ring of fire portion lasts from three to five minutes, depending on location.

Next April, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/where-to-see-2024-total-solar-eclipse-113061a08d63e579c698017312f7eea0">total solar eclipse</a>&nbsp;will crisscross the U.S. in the opposite direction. That one will begin in Mexico and go from Texas to New England before ending in eastern Canada.

The next ring of fire eclipse is in October next year at the southernmost tip of South America. Antarctica gets one in 2026. It will be 2039 before another ring of fire is visible in the U.S., and Alaska will be the only state in its direct path.

Rare 'ring of fire' solar eclipse Saturday

Just after 7p.m. Wednesday, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office received information regarding a potential threat to the <a href="https://usd437.net/tallgrass">Tallgrass Student</a> Learning Center,&nbsp;5740 SW 61st Street in Topeka. The school is in USD 437 Auburn-Washburn.

A student made threatening comments regarding bringing a firearm to school the next day, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The Shawnee County Criminal Investigation Division immediately contacted school administrators and the suspect identified as a 14-year-old.

At 10:30p.m., deputies arrested the 14-year-old and booked the teen into the Shawnee County Juvenile Department of Corrections on requested charges of felony criminal threat and felony interference with law enforcement.

14-year-old accused of threat to bring gun to Kan. school

What is your profession? I am a lawyer and mediator, also a singer-songwriter and a horse boarding stable owner.

Give a brief bio on yourself in 100 words or less: I grew up in Salina, went to Heusner and South, then to K-State for a degree in Elementary Education. Later, I went to Harvard for a law degree, then came back to Kansas. For the past 23 years, I’ve been back in Salina. As a mediator, I get people together on different sides of an issue and help them reach agreement. As a singer-songwriter I sing about 100 gigs a year, including many in Salina schools through Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. I’ve been on the Salina school board for two terms. My husband and I run a horse boarding stable.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize in order to improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of public school students in our community? In line with our strategic plan, I want to ensure that our students are excellent communicators and critical thinkers and have good social-emotional skills. If they have these skills, they will be on their way to a successful adulthood. To get there, they need great teachers (which we have), good facilities (which we have), and an all-around enriching school experience (which we are always working to improve). I want us to be sure that even kids who don’t have every advantage at home come away with these critical skills. This means they go to school every possible day, overcoming our significant challenge of chronic absenteeism. We are currently working on all these things.

In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue? We have a long-standing policy to respond to book challenges. We went through this policy in the past couple of years when three community members, none of whom had children in our schools and none of whom had read the book, objected to a book that is in our high school libraries,&nbsp;All Boys Aren’t Blue. As directed by the policy, there were three levels of appeal. At each of the first two levels, different teachers, administrators, and community members read the book and decided it had value and should stay. At the last level of appeal, the whole school board read the book and decided it had value and should stay. I am glad so many people got to read the book. I am sorry the objectors never read it. Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents, citizens, and educators? Our schools are trying and trying to get more parents involved in their children’s education. Each year, there are at 4 days just for parents to come to the school to meet with the teachers. All year, the parents have access to Skyward, the online record of their children’s educational progress. On any day, a parent can call or email their child’s teacher(s) through the school websites, and teachers work hard to answer. Parents may visit their children in school. In our recent work to lower chronic absenteeism, school staff have been calling homes when the children are absent to see if help is needed to get them to school. Each school has a site council - including parents, teachers and community members - which meets regularly to find ways to improve the school and keep communication open between school and home. If parents are interested in involvement, there are many, many ways for them to do that. Just in the past year, we have made major efforts to ensure that school is a welcoming place for families as well as for students and staff.

Please explain why you are running for school board. I have enjoyed the challenging work I’ve encountered on the school board. I am interested in serving another term. I am also concerned about the number of people in our community and elsewhere who have become convinced that public schools are the enemy. The anti-public-school narrative comes from an outside source that is hostile to the idea of communities working together across all our differing backgrounds and opinions. I want Salina to be a great place to live, not just pass through on the way to somewhere else. I want it to be a great place to grow up, a great place to move to, a great place to come back to. For that, we need great public schools.

Later, I went to Harvard for a law degree, then came back to Kansas. For the past 23 years, I’ve been back in Salina. As a mediator, I get people together on different sides of an issue and help them reach agreement. As a singer-songwriter I sing about 100 gigs a year, including many in Salina schools through Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. I’ve been on the Salina school board for two terms. My husband and I run a horse boarding stable.As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize in order to improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of public school students in our community? In line with our strategic plan, I want to ensure that our students are excellent communicators and critical thinkers and have good social-emotional skills. If they have these skills, they will be on their way to a successful adulthood. To get there, they need great teachers (which we have), good facilities (which we have), and an all-around enriching school experience (which we are always working to improve). I want us to be sure that even kids who don’t have every advantage at home come away with these critical skills. This means they go to school every possible day, overcoming our significant challenge of chronic absenteeism. We are currently working on all these things.In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue? We have a long-standing policy to respond to book challenges. We went through this policy in the past couple of years when three community members, none of whom had children in our schools and none of whom had read the book, objected to a book that is in our high school libraries,&nbsp;All Boys Aren’t Blue. As directed by the policy, there were three levels of appeal. At each of the first two levels, different teachers, administrators, and community members read the book and decided it had value and should stay. At the last level of appeal, the whole school board read the book and decided it had value and should stay. I am glad so many people got to read the book. I am sorry the objectors never read it. Saline County Jail Activity, Oct. 12

TOPEKA (AP) —Kansas became the 10th state in the nation Wednesday to require two-person railroad crews despite objections from freight railroads, but the industry may challenge the rule in court as it has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rail-safety-ohio-crew-size-derailment-lawsuit-429df55468cc112d7057d4dd1dcf5322">in other states</a>&nbsp;like&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-transportation-budget-rail-safety-derailment-bc3e97140763a5accd8bc40cfa664611">Ohio</a>.

The major freight railroads have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/railroads-to-renew-push-for-one-man-crews-in-contract-talks-3f97553f0ec9474784249fa4a17e1169">long pushed</a>&nbsp;to cut crews down to one person, but unions have resisted because they believe it’s safer to have two people working together to operate trains.

Gov. Laura Kelly said two-person crews “will protect workers from the effects of fatigue, prevent train derailments and reduce risks in the many Kansas communities along our railroad tracks.” The new administrative rule took effect Wednesday.

The railroad industry maintains there isn't enough evidence to show that two-person crews are safer and many short-line railroads already operate with a single person aboard.

“Regulatory efforts to mandate crew staffing such as the latest in Kansas lack a safety justification,” said spokesperson Jessica Kahanek with the Association of American Railroads trade group.

Kahanek said she didn't want to speculate whether the industry will file a lawsuit challenging the Kansas rule the way it did in Ohio. The railroads generally argue in their lawsuits that the federal government should be the only one to regulate the industry to ensure there's a uniform set of rules.

At least&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroads-freight-safety-derailment-state-laws-42fa5ddae7486e44c7383def082d31a3">a dozen states</a>&nbsp;impatient with the federal government's reluctance to pass new regulations on railroads have tried to pass restrictions on the industry related to minimum crew size, train length and blocked crossings.

Both the Ohio and Kansas crew-size rules were proposed in the months after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-pete-buttigieg-evacuations-ohio-explosions-64908a6416662b5866809387f210aee5">fiery Norfolk Southern derailment</a>&nbsp;in eastern Ohio in February. That crash forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes around East Palestine while&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-updates-bf5a60de2243cd6f7f730096aa33294c">hazardous chemicals burned</a>&nbsp;in the days afterward. The cleanup continues and residents continue to worry about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-contamination-fears-brockovich-fc68b402096a4f5f8598a657f7e399f8">possible long-term health effects</a>.

The other states that have rules requiring two-person crews on the books are California, Wisconsin, Arizona, West Virginia. Minnesota, Washington, Nevada and Colorado. Those state regulations could be unnecessary if the Federal Railroad Administration approves a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/588d6f7829c4836b9d2feff5c21a5097">proposed rule</a>&nbsp;to require two-person crews or if a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-congress-6288cdfb0b4381de4c9bfb05199b8ba6">package of rail safety reforms</a>&nbsp;proposed in Congress that includes that requirement is approved. But the rail safety bill hasn't received a vote in the Senate or a hearing in the House, so it's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-safety-regulations-railroad-4db52c68daf68da05425b5b70363fb0a">prospects are uncertain</a>.

Jeremy Ferguson, who leads the Transportation Division of the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers union that represents conductors, praised the new Kansas rule alongside the governor Wednesday.

“We have all worked hard to show that safety comes first, and corporate profits will never be placed ahead of all the citizens of this great state,” Ferguson said.

Kahanek, the industry spokesperson, said the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aar.org/issue/crew-size/">railroads believe</a>&nbsp;crew size should be determined by contract negotiations with the unions — not by regulations.

Union Pacific is in the process of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-railroad-crews-kansas-2f87d473a41a8c999945043ecab597c1">testing</a>&nbsp;out how quickly a conductor in a truck can respond to problems on a train compared to the conductor aboard the locomotive, although the railroad is still maintaining two people at the controls of its trains during the test.

Gov. announces new rule to improve safety for Kan. rail workers

Smoky Hills PBS announced that they will be bringing Clifford The Big Red Dog to the Little River Fall Festival in the MTC Parking Lot on Saturday, Oct. 21.&nbsp; Clifford will be greeting children in Little River from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there is no admission fee to attend this event.&nbsp; This event is FREE!

Kids will have a chance to meet Clifford in person and take pictures with him. The first 200 kids that come to meet Clifford will receive a FREE gift!&nbsp; There will also be fun crafts on hand for the kids.

Clifford the Big Red Dog coming to Little River

MCPHERSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a standoff in McPherson.

Just after 3:30p.m. Tuesday, dispatch received reports of a man brandishing a firearm at multiple individuals in Marquette, according to a media release from the McPherson County Sheriff's office.

 </figure>MCPHERSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a standoff in McPherson.Just after 3:30p.m. Tuesday, dispatch received reports of a man brandishing a firearm at multiple individuals in Marquette, according to a media release from the McPherson County Sheriff's office.Deputies responded and found a man outside his residence with the firearm. Deputies attempted to have the man surrender when he pointed his firearm at deputies and retreated inside his home. Multiple agencies including the McPherson Joint Special Response Team, Lindsborg Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Marquette EMS, and Reno County Sheriff's Office were called in to assist with negotiations and securing the perimeter. After a 5-hour standoff, the man identified as 68-year-old Marlin Carpenter, according to online jail records, was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to McPherson Hospital for medical evaluation and later booked into McPherson County Jail on requested charges of Criminal Threat, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Interference with LEO and Aggravated Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer. He is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.
