LOS ANGELES (AP) — Teri Garr, the quirky comedy actor who rose from background dancer in Elvis Presley movies to co-star of such favorites as "Young Frankenstein" and "Tootsie," has died. She was 79.

Garr died Tuesday of multiple sclerosis “surrounded by family and friends,” said publicist Heidi Schaeffer. Garr battled other health problems in recent years, underwent an operation in January 2007 to repair an aneurysm.

The actor, who was sometimes credited as Terri, Terry or Terry Ann during her long career, seemed destined for show business from her childhood.

Her father was Eddie Garr, a well-known vaudeville comedian; her mother was Phyllis Lind, one of the original high-kicking Rockettes at New York's Radio City Music Hall. Their daughter began dance lessons at 6 and by 14 was dancing with the San Francisco and Los Angeles ballet companies.

She was 16 when she joined the road company of "West Side Story" in Los Angeles, and as early as 1963 she began appearing in bit parts in films.

She recalled in a 1988 interview how she won the "West Side Story" role. After being dropped from her first audition, she returned a day later in different clothes and was accepted.

From there, the blonde, statuesque Garr found steady work dancing in movies, and she appeared in the chorus of nine Presley films, including "Viva Las Vegas," "Roustabout" and "Clambake."

She also appeared on numerous television shows, including “Star Trek,” “Dr. Kildare” and “Batman,” and was a featured dancer on the rock ‘n’ roll music show “Shindig,” the rock concert performance T.A.M.I. and a cast member of “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour.”

Her big film break came as Gene Hackman’s girlfriend in 1974’s Francis Ford Coppola thriller “The Conversation.” That led to an interview with Mel Brooks, who said he would hire her for the role of Gene Wilder’s German lab assistant in 1974’s “Young Frankenstein” — if she could speak with a German accent.

“Cher had this German woman, Renata, making wigs, so I got the accent from her,” Garr once recalled.

The film established her as a talented comedy performer, with New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael proclaiming her “the funniest neurotic dizzy dame on the screen.”

Her big smile and off-center appeal helped land her roles in “Oh God!” opposite George Burns and John Denver, “Mr. Mom” (as Michael Keaton’s wife) and “Tootsie” in which she played the girlfriend who loses Dustin Hoffman to Jessica Lange and learns that he has dressed up as a woman to revive his career. (She also lost the supporting actress Oscar at that year’s Academy Awards to Lange.)

Although best known for comedy, Garr showed in such films as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “The Black Stallion” and “The Escape Artist” that she could handle drama equally well.

“I would like to play ‘Norma Rae’ and ‘Sophie’s Choice,’ but I never got the chance,” she once said, adding she had become typecast as a comic actor.

She had a flair for spontaneous humor, often playing David Letterman’s foil during guest appearances on NBC’s “Late Night With David Letterman” early in its run.

Her appearances became so frequent, and the pair’s good-natured bickering so convincing, that for a time rumors cropped up that they were romantically involved. Years later, Letterman credited those early appearances with helping make the show a hit.

It was also during those years that Garr began to feel “a little beeping or ticking” in her right leg. It began in 1983 and eventually spread to her right arm as well, but she felt she could live with it. By 1999 the symptoms had become so severe that she consulted a doctor. The diagnosis: multiple sclerosis.

For three years Garr didn’t reveal her illness.

“I was afraid that I wouldn’t get work,” she explained in a 2003 interview. “People hear MS and think, ‘Oh, my God, the person has two days to live.’”

After going public, she became a spokeswoman for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, making humorous speeches to gatherings in the U.S. and Canada.

“You have to find your center and roll with the punches because that’s a hard thing to do: to have people pity you,” she commented in 2005. “Just trying to explain to people that I’m OK is tiresome.”

She also continued to act, appearing on “Law &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Greetings From Tucson,” “Life With Bonnie” and other TV shows. She also had a brief recurring role on “Friends” in the 1990s as Lisa Kudrow’s mother. After several failed romances, Garr married contractor John O’Neill in 1993. They adopted a daughter, Molly, before divorcing in 1996.

In her 2005 autobiography, “Speedbumps: Flooring It Through Hollywood,” Garr explained her decision not to discuss her age.

“My mother taught me that showbiz people never tell their real ages. She never revealed hers or my father’s,” she wrote. California voting registration records gave her date of birth as Dec. 11, 1947.

She said she was born in Los Angeles, although most reference books list Lakewood, Ohio. As her father’s career waned, the family, including Teri’s two older brothers, lived with relatives in the Midwest and East.

The Garrs eventually moved back to California, settling in the San Fernando Valley, where Teri was graduated from North Hollywood High School and studied speech and drama for two years at California State University, Northridge.

Garr recalled in 1988 what her father had told his children about pursuing a career in Hollywood.

“Don’t be in this business,” he told them. “It’s the lowest. It’s humiliating to people.”

By SALINA POST A Salina man has been arrested on requested charges of rape and domestic battery following an alleged sexual assault reported by a Salina woman in late August.

The alleged assault was reported to Salina Police Department (SPD) officers on August 30. According to the victim, the crime was perpetrated by 37-year-old Eric Earnest on August 29 at a South Central Salina residence.

Following an investigation, the case was referred to the Saline County Attorney’s Office, which issued a warrant for Earnest's arrest.

Saline County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Earnest and booked him into the Saline County Jail on Oct. 9 for requested charges of domestic battery: rude physical contact, rape; sexual intercourse with physically powerless victim and failure to appear.&nbsp;

SPD Cpt. James Feldman made the incident report available to the media this morning, Tuesday Oct. 29. When asked why the report was not given to the media before today he said that the report was not ready yet.&nbsp;

Salina man arrested for alleged rape, domestic battery

RAWLINS COUNTY — Law enforcement in northwest Kansas are investigating three suspects on multiple allegations after fight at a hospital,&nbsp; a firearm and a stolen vehicle.

Just before 5:30p.m. Friday, sheriff's deputies responded to report of a fight involving two men and a woman at the Rawlins County Hospital, 707 Grant Street in Atwood, according to Sheriff&nbsp;Catlyn Wahrman.

At the hospital, deputies learned the fight began at another location and&nbsp;involved a firearm.&nbsp; Deputies took one man into custody immediately and transported him to the Thomas County Jail.

According to Sheriff Wahrman, Security cameras show the altercation at the hospital.

Just before 8p.m. Friday, 33-year-old Evan Tipton was booked into jail on requested charges of&nbsp;Aggravated assault; Use of a deadly weapon and Battery, according to online jail records.

After an investigation, deputies arrested the other man 26-year-old Chandler Johnson and and 33-year-old Amy Ross and recovered a stolen vehicle from Colorado.

Just after 9:30 p.m. deputies booked Johnson on requested charges of&nbsp;Violation of protection order; Domestic battery; Knowing or reckless bodily harm to family/person in dating relationship and Criminal damage to property, according to online jail records.

On Saturday morning, deputies booked&nbsp; Ross into jail on requested charges that include&nbsp;Obstructing apprehension of prosecution; Committed or charged with felony and Driving while license cancelled/suspended/revoked.

Tipton is expected to face additional charges in connection with the firearm.

According to Sheriff Wahrman in a statement, “Acts of violence of this nature are rare in our community. I am thankful for my staff, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in bringing a quick resolution to the situation. My main priority is always the safety of Rawlins County and its people.”

Saline County Jail Bookings, Oct. 29

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas man on multiple allegations after a shooting, chase and attempted carjacking.

Just after 6p.m. Sunday, police&nbsp;responded to a shooting call in the 1600 block of S. Hydraulic in Wichita, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo.

 Before their arrival, officers were informed that the suspect had run from scene. At the scene, officers located a 26-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the upper body. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

As officers investigated, they identified and located the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Chandler Wooten, according to the Sedgwick County arrest report, who attempted to evade arrest. 

During the pursuit, the Wooten tried to carjack a vehicle from a 51-year-old man in the 2100 block of S. Pattie. Due to the quick response of officers, the attempted carjacking was prevented, and Wooten was apprehended without further incident. He was found armed with a handgun at the time of his arrest.

Wooten is being held in the Sedgwick County jail on requested charges of Attempted Murder, Attempted Carjacking, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Obstruction, and Possession of Paraphernalia.

Police: Kan. man ran from shooting, tried to carjack a vehicle

SEDGWICK COUNTY– The Wichita Police Department has arrested a 24-year-old woman from Wichita in connection with a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 43-year-old woman from Hutchinson.

On Monday morning, officers located an occupied stolen vehicle at the Riverwalk Apartments, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

Officers monitored the vehicle using unmarked cars, and air support was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Around noon, the vehicle stopped at Walmart, 29th and Rock Road. Officers deployed spike strips to prevent the vehicle from leaving, successfully deflating two tires. 

Despite this, the suspect fled the Walmart parking lot, striking a police vehicle.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle, but KHP air support continued to track it from above. The vehicle proceeded to a business on North Webb Road, where two individuals exited the vehicle and fled on foot. 

One individual was apprehended, while another female suspect stole another vehicle from the business and fled south on Webb, then west on 29th Street, according to Gupilan.

KHP Air maintained surveillance of the stolen vehicle, which, at 29th and Wilderness, collided with a sedan occupied by the 43-year-old woman from Hutchinson.

The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police have not released her name.

The female suspect, a 24-year-old from Wichita, sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. She will later be booked into jail on appropriate charges.

 </figure>SEDGWICK COUNTY– The Wichita Police Department has arrested a 24-year-old woman from Wichita in connection with a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 43-year-old woman from Hutchinson.On Monday morning, officers located an occupied stolen vehicle at the Riverwalk Apartments, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.Officers monitored the vehicle using unmarked cars, and air support was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol.Around noon, the vehicle stopped at Walmart, 29th and Rock Road. Officers deployed spike strips to prevent the vehicle from leaving, successfully deflating two tires. Despite this, the suspect fled the Walmart parking lot, striking a police vehicle.Officers did not pursue the vehicle, but KHP air support continued to track it from above. The vehicle proceeded to a business on North Webb Road, where two individuals exited the vehicle and fled on foot. One individual was apprehended, while another female suspect stole another vehicle from the business and fled south on Webb, then west on 29th Street, according to Gupilan.KHP Air maintained surveillance of the stolen vehicle, which, at 29th and Wilderness, collided with a sedan occupied by the 43-year-old woman from Hutchinson.The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police have not released her name.The female suspect, a 24-year-old from Wichita, sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Police: Kansas woman dies after crash with stolen vehicle

Dickinson County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a weekend arrest.

Just before 5p.m. Sunday, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office received a call for service regarding an unknown woman attempting to break into a residence in the 700 Block of Kansas 18 Highway, according to Undersheriff&nbsp;Jeff Vaughan.

 A Deputy responded and made contact with the suspect later identified as 54-year-old Denise Sheffield of Junction City, outside the residence. 

Sheffield was uncooperative and raised a fist to hit a deputy. She was quickly handcuffed at that time but continued flailing around and kicked a deputy and also refused to identify herself.

During the investigation, it was learned that Sheffield yelled profanities and threats at the resident who remained inside the house. It was also learned that Sheffield pulled up her dress and exposed herself to the resident who was watching her through a window.

Deputies booked Sheffield into the Dickinson County Detention Facility on requested charges of Attempted Aggravated Burglary, Criminal Trespass, Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Threat, Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer and Interference with a Law Enforcement Officer.

Jean Marie Loader, residing at Presbyterian Manor in Salina, KS, passed away peacefully at age 87, on October 25, 2024.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;She was born in Grinnell, Kansas on October 24, 1937 to Nick and Lucy Nieman.&nbsp; Jean married Donald Loader in Salina, on August 30, 1969.&nbsp; She graduated from Marymount College with a bachelor’s degree in education.&nbsp; She was a volunteer and served for three years in Jamaica.&nbsp;&nbsp; Jean was a favorite grade school teacher for many years at Salina Catholic Schools.&nbsp; She also co-owned Don Loader interiors and worked at the Market Shop until she retired.&nbsp; She was avid bridge player, bowler, sports fan and book reader.&nbsp; Spending her spare time with family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jean is survived by her two sons, Jon Loader and Jim Loader (Michael Chambers); grandson, Stephen Loader; her brothers Kenny Nieman and Jerry Nieman, Lawrence Nieman; brother in law, Jerry Belt; many nieces and nephews.

Robert Joseph Allen, 54, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 19, 2024, lovingly surrounded by members of his family.

Rob was born on December 7, 1969, in Belleville, Kansas, the first of two children of Roger and Pam Allen. When he was a kid, Rob always had a basketball, tennis ball, or football in his hands, and he loved being in the middle of any action. He spent hours on basketball and tennis courts, playing high school varsity in both sports. After Rob graduated from Salina South High School in 1988, he went on to study journalism at the University of Kansas and was a brother of the KU Chapter of Phi Delta Theta.

After graduating from KU, he started his first job as a sales executive at Unum, kickstarting a thirty-year career in insurance and employee benefits. Along the way Rob spent time golfing and traveling for work, and he found a new calling as “Uncle Rob” to Izzy.

In 2005, Rob met Meghann Johnson at the office. Five years later on March 19, 2010, with close friends and family, Rob and Meg married in a snow-covered cabin in Allenspark, Colorado. On September 30, 2013, they welcomed twin boys, Jack and Gus, who became the center of their universe. Four-legged babies – Whiskey and Bruce – were also important Allen family additions.

In June 2022, Rob was diagnosed with kidney cancer. He continued to work full-time for the better part of two years. Between surgeries and treatments, in true Good Vibes – Be A Goldfish – Never Give Up fashion, Rob and his family became road-trip warriors. Destinations included St. Louis to catch a Cubs game (of course!) and to ascend the Arch, and multiple western National Parks and sites: the Badlands, Devil’s Tower, Grand Tetons (including Colter Bay – where Jack gets his middle name), Yellowstone, RMNP, Grand Canyon (North and South Rims!), Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches and Canyonlands. Rob loved the open road, American history, and introducing his boys to these special places.

A happy Rob would be found watching thoroughbred horse racing, his Cubbies, the Celtics, the Jayhawks, the Stars, and college football. He enjoyed reading with a particular interest in historical books. His favorite was Lonesome Dove, where he found the name Gus.

Rob was predeceased by grandparents Clarence and Elise Lott, Bernard Allen, Elva Lee (Allen) Jones and cousin Luke Allen. He is survived by wife Meghann (Johnson) Allen, sons Gus and Jack Allen, parents Roger and Pam Allen, sister Kari (Marc) Williams, niece Izzy (Hunter) Willyard, uncle/aunt Lewis (JoBeth) Allen, cousins Rachel (Joe) Allen Polaneczky and Paul (Tonya) Allen, parents-in-law Steve and Connie Johnson and brother-in-law Chad (Christopher Heaps) Johnson.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Oct. 28

PHILADELPHIA (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;said Sunday that “no one can sit on the sidelines” in this year's presidential election, capping a day of campaigning across the largest city in the crucial battleground state of Pennsylvania.

“We are focused on the future and we are focused on the needs of the American people," Harris said, "as opposed to Donald Trump, who spends full time looking in the mirror focused on himself.”

Speaking at a city recreation center, the Democratic vice president singled out young voters, praising them for being “rightly impatient for change," and told the audience that “there is too much at stake” in the campaign.

“We must not wake up the day after the election and have any regret about what we could have done in these next nine days," Harris said.

Mark Ruffalo and Don Cheadle, two actors who starred in Marvel's “Avengers” movies, were at the rally. Harris reminded the crowd that Pennsylvania's deadline for early voting is Tuesday, telling them to “get it done tomorrow if you can.”

Energizing voters in Philadelphia, a traditional Democratic stronghold, is crucial for Harris’ chances of beating Republican nominee Donald Trump. If turnout falls short here, she’ll struggle to overcome Trump’s advantages in Pennsylvania’s rural areas.

“Philadelphia is a very important part of our path to victory,” Harris told reporters. “It’s the reason I have been spending time here. But I’m feeling very optimistic about the enthusiasm.”

Kenny Payne, 62, said Harris is going to win and “it won’t be close.” The Democratic voter said he plays golf with a group of Republicans who say they won’t vote for Trump again.

“I think we’ll all be in bed by midnight,” he said outside the recreation center where Harris spoke.

Patrick Boe, 46, said he was confident about the city's enthusiasm for Harris, but he acknowledged that his view may be skewed.

Randyll Butler, a youth basketball coach who introduced Harris, said the election was in the “fourth quarter.”

“We cannot get tired," she said. "We cannot get complacent.”

The Democratic coalition relies on voters of color, and Harris’ itinerary on Sunday reflected that focus. She began the day with the Black congregation at the Church of Christian Compassion, where she said the United States is “determined to turn the page on hatred and division.”

Harris drew on the story of the Apostle Paul, who overcame difficulties to spread the word of Jesus.

“In hard times when we may grow weary in doing good, we must remember the power that works within us, the divine power that transformed Paul’s life, guided him through shipwreck and sustained him through trials,” Harris said.

W. Lonnie Herndon, the church’s senior pastor, introduced Harris as “the voice of the future” and followed her remarks with a sermon about compassion and how “strong people never put others down, they lift them up.”

“We are going to get out and vote,” he said as Harris listened from her seat in the front row. “And let me be crystal clear. We are not electing a pastor. We are electing a president that will deal with these divided United States, bring us back together.”

Her next stop was Philly Cuts, a barbershop in West Philadelphia. Pennsylvania state Rep. Jordan Harris moderated a conversation with Harris and Black men about improving racial representation in education. A poster of Barack Obama, the first Black president, was on the wall.

“We don’t pay teachers enough,” said Harris, who would be the second Black president and the first female president, if elected. “ Student loan debt is an issue.”

Outside the shop, people stood on stoops and lined the sidewalks in hopes of catching a glimpse of Harris. “The MVP of the White House!” someone shouted.

Harris visited nearby Hakim’s Bookstore, which specializes in African American history.

“It’s beautiful. It’s just so beautiful,” she said and asked to see good books for 6- and 8-year-old children, the same ages as her nieces.

Harris joked about her weight with Ann Hughes, the mother of Pennsylvania state Sen. Vincent Hughes.

“They’re working me to the bone,” she said.

After leaving the bookstore, Harris headed to a Puerto Rican restaurant named Freddy and Tony’s, where she thanked volunteers and told them “we are going to win.”

She also met with youth basketball players at the Alan Horowitz “Sixth Man” Center. The coach said the players are “student first, athlete second.” Harris told them to “think of your brain as a muscle and when you exercise it, it gets stronger.”

Harris has tried to keep the focus on abortion rights in the closing stretch of the campaign, including during appearances with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-abortion-rights-2024-election-democrats-f228eedd3308dab2e1125fdf6029a4a2">Beyoncé</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/harris-michelle-obama-biden-michigan-61897674ddc94706031d00aca5c1dc86">Michelle Obama</a>. In an interview with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/video/kamala-harris-on-her-first-priority-as-president/">CBS News</a>&nbsp;that aired Sunday, Harris declined to say whether she would support any restrictions on abortion, emphasizing the need to restore Roe v. Wade.

The nationwide right to abortion was overturned two years ago by the conservative majority on the Supreme Court that included three justices nominated by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Trump</a>&nbsp;while president.

“My first priority is to put back in place those protections and to stop this pain and to stop this injustice that is happening around our country,” Harris said.

She also brushed off Trump’s claim that he would not sign a national abortion ban if elected. “He says everything, come on,” Harris said. “Are we really taking his word for it?”

Harris and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/tim-walz">Tim Walz</a>, the Minnesota governor who is her running mate, are expected to visit all seven battleground states in the coming days, part of a final blitz before the election.

While Harris was in Philadelphia on Sunday, Walz was campaigning in Las Vegas. On Monday, Walz will visit Manitowoc and Waukesha, Wisconsin, before joining Harris for a rally in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where the singer Maggie Rogers is scheduled to perform.

Harris will be in the nation's capital on Tuesday to deliver what her campaign calls&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-donald-trump-democracy-17bf55d6c22aba433588dcd1d1ad3105">her “closing argument”</a>&nbsp;in a speech from the Ellipse, a grassy space near the White House. It's the same place where Trump spoke on Jan. 6, 2021, when the Republican called on his supporters to march on the Capitol.

JOHNSON COUNTY — Emporia State University placed a professor on administrative leave following an arrest for alleged child sex crimes.

On Wednesday Howard Pitler, 72, was booked into the Johnson County jail on requested charges of&nbsp; electronic solicitation of a child under 14 years old, according to online jail records. He met the requirements of a $25,000 bond and is no longer in&nbsp; custody.

According to Emporia State, "Upon being made aware of the arrest of Howard Pitler, the university responded immediately and placed Pitler on administrative leave. With our rich tradition as a premier Teachers College, the care and safety of students of all ages is of the utmost importance. Pitler taught fully online master’s level courses as an associate professor of School Leadership, Middle &amp; Secondary Teacher Education in The Teachers College. He has been at ESU since 2018. Emporia State will cooperate fully with authorities. We cannot comment further on an ongoing investigation."

Pitler is scheduled to return to court October 31, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

Many of this election’s Republican candidates align with the current board’s conservative faction on issues like religion in schools, arming teachers and parental involvement in instructional and functional decisions.At an Oct. 6 forum in Lawrence, a candidate for the northeastern 4th District, Kris Meyer, criticized the four conservative members on the current board who she believes are “seeking to sow distrust across the state of Kansas in our public schools.”Those four board members — Danny Zeck, Michelle Dombrosky, Cathy Hopkins and Dennis Hershberger — are not up for reelection until 2026.In the 2nd District, which represents school districts in Johnson and Wyandotte counties, incumbent Melanie Haas, a Democrat and tech executive, is seeking to retain her seat in a three-way race. She is up against Republican challenger Fred Postlewait and an independent, Kiel Corkran. Haas was first elected in 2020 and is the board’s current chair. She was endorsed by the Kansas National Education Association, the state’s public educator union, and she has defended fully funding public schools.Postlewait, a retired computer systems manager, was inspired to run for the board to address declining ACT scores, which have been on a downward trend since 2014 but saw a sharp drop in 2020.“The train is off the tracks,” he wrote on his campaign website.Corkran does not have a campaign website and didn’t respond to Kansas Reflector’s requests for an interview.In the 4th District in northeastern Kansas, Democrat Ann Mah is vacating her seat on the board after eight years. Republican Connie O’Brien, a former teacher and state representative, and Democrat Meyer, a longtime public school educator and principal, are vying for the position.O’Brien beat out two other Republican hopefuls in the August Primary after Attorney General Kris Kobach gave her his endorsement, urging conservatives to vote for her.She said in a video posted to YouTube she’ll focus on changes to vocational and technical education, supporting parental rights and supporting teachers.O’Brien, who did not respond to Kansas Reflector’s requests for comment, said at the Oct. 6 candidate forum at the Lawrence Public Library she does not support vouchers, adding that private school and home school parents “don’t want government in their face.”“But you have to wonder why parents march up to the capital every year and ask for those things,” she said.Meyer told Kansas Reflector she’ll focus on fully funding public education, particularly special education, addressing teacher shortages and retention woes and bolstering student mental health support.“I want to ensure the state board continues to set clear standards and advocate for policies and funding that guarantee all students receive a quality education,” she said. “This includes pushing back on legislative overreach that could hinder the state board’s constitutional duty.”In the 6th District, Republican Deena Horst isn’t running for reelection. Democrat Beryl Ann New, a retired director of personnel and equity at Topeka Public Schools, and Republican Bruce Schultz, a retired professor of anatomy and physiology at Kansas State University, are running to represent school districts in north-central and northeastern Kansas, including the cities of Lawrence and Topeka.If elected, New told Kansas Reflector, her goal is to address poor student performance and safety in schools in her first year.“I will collaborate with board members to ensure that resources are provided to schools whose students are yet below grade level in reading comprehension, provide funding to ensure that Kansas schools remain safe and secure, and solidly support the full funding of all Kansas schools with 100% of funds going solely to public schools,” New said.She also said she supports vetted alternative teaching programs to address teacher retention and shortages. At the Oct. 6 forum in Lawrence, New said the principal reason she’s seen teachers leave the profession was inadequate compensation.Schultz, who didn’t respond to Kansas Reflector’s inquiries, said at the forum he doesn’t think boosting teacher salaries is the right answer to teacher retention issues and shortages. Instead, he favors an approach that builds persistence in teaching, he said.“We need to reform the system to allow and promote greater community engagement,” he said.Schultz has campaigned on prioritizing parent involvement in school decisions, focusing education on math, science, language arts and financial literacy and budget efficiency, according to his campaign website.In the Wichita-area 8th District, Democratic incumbent Betty Arnold, a former Wichita school board member, seeks to hold on to the position she has occupied since 2021. She’s aiming to reevaluate performance measures and outcomes, increase teacher compensation and prioritize student safety.“I believe in public education and I will continue to support it,” Arnold said in an email. “As the focus shifts away from the support of public education, it is vital to have an advocate that understands public education is a must if we want to continue with all children having access to an education.”Arnold’s opponent, Republican Jason Carmichael, did not respond to Kansas Reflector’s requests for comment. He&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/11/12/in-kansas-school-board-races-voters-reject-candidates-pushing-culture-war-issues/" target="_blank">lost a bid for a sea</a>t on the Unified School District 259 board in Wichita in 2023. During that election, he ran on the premise that “parents’ rights are the cornerstone” of society,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmuw.org/politics/2023-10-19/2023-wichita-school-board-where-do-candidates-stand-on-the-issues" target="_blank">KMUW reported</a>. Carmichael believes in eliminating the U.S. Department of Education, supports teachers who are authorized to carry guns in order to combat an active shooter and opposes mandated vaccination requirements, according to a questionnaire he completed for&nbsp;<a href="https://ivoterguide.com/" target="_blank">iVoterGuide</a>, which is affiliated with Christian political nonprofit&nbsp;<a href="https://afaaction.net/mission" target="_blank">AFA Action</a>.The 10th District in south-central Kansas is contested in a three-way race. Jeffrey Jarman, a Democrat, Debby Potter, a Republican, and Kent Rowe, an independent, are vying for the position being vacated by moderate Republican Jim McNiece.Jarman, a communications professor at Wichita State University and member of the Maize public school board, said in an email he will advocate for stable funding and against school vouchers if elected.“While the Legislature appropriates the funds, there is an important role for the board in advocating for stable funding,” he said. “The current funding formula finally meets the minimum required by the state constitution, but it will expire in 2027. I strongly support extending the formula to provide stability to school districts.”Jarman said he hopes to support local districts by bettering educational achievement outcomes and allocating existing funds to programs that assist the “most vulnerable students,” he said.“But,” he added, “the board is divided and decisions about how to best support our students unfortunately are politicized.”Potter, who did not respond to Kansas Reflector’s requests for comment, homeschooled her own children, and she said she was inspired to run when she considered her grandchildren.“I want them not to be indoctrinated away from their faith and away from their parents, and I feel like there’s a lot of undermining of the families going on,” she said at a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub1MbGf7FXI" target="_blank">candidate forum</a>&nbsp;hosted by Republican Women United of Sedgwick County ahead of the August primary election.She defeated another Republican hopeful in the primary. God is her campaign manager, she said at the forum.Potter considers herself to be “very conservative, ” she wrote in answers for an iVoterGuide questionnaire. She supports arming licensed teachers, eradicating the federal department of education and is a strong advocate for parental involvement in schools.“While I believe private education provides a better result for less money, the general public has determined that public education is in the public’s best interest,” she wrote. “To that end, my hope will be to involve parents and teachers to take more control (as would be the case in private education) through informing them and encouraging their increased participation with their local school boards.”Rowe, who didn’t respond to Kansas Reflector’s inquiries, is a member of the Kansas Green Party, according to his&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kentforkansasboe.com/kent-s-platform/" target="_blank">campaign website</a>. His priorities include retaining funding for rural public schools, preventing book bans in high schools and addressing student mental health issues. He is a retired professor of aeronautical science for the U.S. Air Force and the former mayor of Longton, which is in Elk County.
