Gypsum invites public to celebrate retirement party for local man serving Saline County since 1981

By TYLER HENRY Lead Sportswriter - Salina Post

In week seven, the Sacred Heart football team solidified its first winning season in over a decade. In week eight, they’ll have an opportunity to add a district title to an unprecedented campaign.

The Knights quickly erased the damage of an 0-2 start, rattling off five-straight victories to enter the final week of the regular season 5-2.

To achieve this feat, they’ll have to take down another program on a similar run in Belleville.

Republic County comes into this contest at 6-1, having locked up their first winning season since 2016.

With six wins, this is already the best season in Republic County’s brief history, and the Buffaloes will be eager to add to it on Friday night.

The Knights have dominated this series historically, and are 16-3 in games against the Buffs, including wins in the last three contests.

Both teams feature a similar schedule this season, with a loss to Ellsworth, and wins over Bennington, Herington, and Valley Heights.

Slowing the trio of quarterback Kash Henke, tailback Nick Kendall, and star wideout Aden Morris will be a focal point for the Knights tonight, but if they can play their new brand of defense they should have an excellent change to ride a six-game win streak into the playoffs.

Stephanie De-Ann Marshall passed on October 11, 2025 in the care of Hospice at Village Manor in Abilene.

Mrs. Marshall was born Stephanie De-Ann Cossel November 10, 1949 to Kenneth Everett Cossel and Virginia Lea Smith Cossel in Spokane Washington.

On June 30, 1967, she was wed to William Ira Marshall Sr. To this union were three children, Robin Dee (Gary) Williams of Wichita, KS, Buffy Jo-El (Chris) Dugan of Wichita, KS, and William I. Marshall, Jr (Kelly Skinner) of Olathe, KS.

Dee attended Concordia public schools. She received a Bachelor of Science from Marymount College in 1988 and a Master of Business Administration from Kansas Wesleyan University in 1997. In 1999, Dee earned Certified Public Manager.

She also served as adjunct faculty for Benedictine College, Kansas Wesleyan University and Kansas State University of Salina teaching computer sciences, accounting, and linear statistics. She was a past president of Phi Beta Lambda of Marymount College.

Dee was a long-time Abilene resident and active in the community. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and served on the Pastoral Parish Council and the Finance Council. She was a member of The American Correctional Association, The Kansas Correctional Association and The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) where she served as State Treasurer and State Auditor, National Appointment as State Chair of Master Reports, Kansas Society DAR, Vice Chair of Auditing and Vice Chair America 250! The Minneapolis Lions and Ellsworth Bearcats will square off tonight in an all-NCAA matchup on our Salina Post Game of the Week.

Ellsworth has flown out of the gates to a 2-0 record by way of a 49-8 win over Sacred Heart and a 40-16 victory over Republic County.

Minneapolis, meanwhile, fell 60-21 to the defending 2A state champs in Southeast of Saline, but bounced back in a 16-6 win over Lyons last week.

The two teams have split their last six matchups right down the middle, with the Bearcats getting the better of the Lions in Ellsworth last season in a 26-21 squeaker.

For the Lions, everything revolves around quarterback/free safety Owen Just, whose play on both sides of the ball has left a mark in several battles between the two already.

Just has gotten off to an unassuming start in 2025, with just three touchdowns to one interception in two games, but is always one big play away from turning the tables in a game like this.

On the other side of the matchup, Ellsworth will continue to lean on the run game, anchored by Senior Tucker Goss, who currently ranks fifth in the state of Kansas in rushing yards with 377 in his first two games.

The Bearcats are also led by sophomore quarterback Carson Jacobs, who while still settling into the passing game, has already figured things out on the ground with 207 yards and three scores.

Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 7:00 at Minneapolis high school. Our pregame coverage will begin at 6:30.

This game is 100% free to stream and will be available live and on-demand at the link below.

For the Lions, everything revolves around quarterback/free safety Owen Just, whose play on both sides of the ball has left a mark in several battles between the two already.Just has gotten off to an unassuming start in 2025, with just three touchdowns to one interception in two games, but is always one big play away from turning the tables in a game like this.On the other side of the matchup, Ellsworth will continue to lean on the run game, anchored by Senior Tucker Goss, who currently ranks fifth in the state of Kansas in rushing yards with 377 in his first two games. The Bearcats are also led by sophomore quarterback Carson Jacobs, who while still settling into the passing game, has already figured things out on the ground with 207 yards and three scores.Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 7:00 at Minneapolis high school. Our pregame coverage will begin at 6:30.This game is 100% free to stream and will be available live and on-demand at the link below.

🏈 Minneapolis hosts Ellsworth for Salina Post Game of the Week

The Ellsworth Bearcats got off to a slow start in Friday’s showdown with Sacred Heart and found themselves trailing 8-7 at the half.

Whatever was said to Ellsworth in the locker room seemed to do the trick.

In the second half, the Bearcats outscored the Knights 42-0 to put the cap on a dominant 49-8 victory.

The rout started innocently enough as quarterback Carson Jacobs took the first score of the second half in himself on a short rush from the five.

On the ensuing drive, Cooper McGowan made a spectacular one-handed interception, and the Bearcats wasted no time capitalizing as McGowan took a handoff on the very next play 35 yards to the house to put Ellsworth in front 21-8.

Not to be outdone, Tucker Goss found paydirt on the next drive of the third quarter for his second rushing score of the game to extend the lead to 20.

Now trailing big, the Knights needed a momentum-swinging drive, but deep in their own territory, disaster struck in the form of a Jace Thomasson pick-six that all but put the game on ice.

Carson Jacobs and Rett Bohl would each find the end zone one more time as the Bearcats put the finishing touches on a dominant week one victory.

Ellsworth will be on the road in Belleville next week as they travel to take on Republic County.

Sacred Heart will have to wait for their home opener as they remain on the road for a week two showdown with Plainville.

🏈 Ellsworth outscores Sacred Heart 42-0 in second half of week one rout

The Sacred Heart football team showed promise throughout their 3-5 2024 season, and with a slew of returning players on both sides of the ball, the team has a chance to take another step forward in 2025.

For the first time in four years, the program retains its head coach as Ryan Krajicek returns for his second season at the helm.

That lack of consistency has been a key culprit in a rough four-year stretch for the Knights, but it’s one of many things changing in Salina.

“We were the fourth coaching staff that these kids had had in four years, that’s four different offenses, four different defenses, different vernacular, all of it,” Krajicek said. “Last year we tried to streamline everything, and with such a young team, we wanted them to learn things quickly; now coming into year two we have that background.”

A familiar scheme and a familiar staff pair well with a familiar roster, as the Knights bring back several key pieces from last year’s team.

That list begins with junior quarterback Maddox Wells, who completed 118 passes for north of 1,500 yards, with 17 touchdown passes and just six interceptions in 2024.

“Maddox is a blast to coach and to teach in the classroom,” he said. “He leads by example and he’s always the last guy to leave the weight room. He can extend plays and direct traffic well and he’s got that game sense about him.”

In the backfield Dom Matteucci reprises his role alongside Elias Godon and Miles wells, while Wells’ favorite target Noah Hines headlines a recieving corps with several newcomers.

The biggest test for the Sacred Heart offense will come in the trenches, where the Knights plan to start three freshmen alongside seniors Cayson Ivey and Gabe Rodriguez.

“Having three freshmen on the offensive line will be a challenge for us,” Krajicek said. “But we wouldn’t put those kids there if we didn’t think they could get the job done.”

The defense see’s several familiar names, with some in new spots as Maddox Wells, Noah Hines and Luis Hernandez patrol the secondary, Gabriel Aguayo, Cayson Ivey, Elias Gordon and Maddox Ontiveros fill out the linebacker corps, and Gabe Rodriguez, Cruz Carrico, Edward Gawith and Landon Pfiefer go to battle in the trenches.

While the results of this rebuild remain to be seen, hopes and expectations in Salina haven’t been this high in awhile, and those supporting the Navy and Gold could be in for an entertaining season ahead.

“Our goal is to keep building,” he said. “The vibes around the community and the kids are as high as they’ve been since I’ve been here. Things still aren’t where we’d like them to be but we have great kids and they have great families, I’m privileged to be able to coach them up and I love going into Friday night’s with them every week.”

Ahead of the 2025 kickoff, Sacred Heart is eying some very attainable goals that should be well within their reach if the Knights can stay healthy.

“Our goal is to do some things that Sacred Heart hasn’t done in a very long time,” Krajicek said. “It’s been a decade since we won our district and it’s been even longer since we finished with a winning record, those are things we want to accomplish.”

The Knights open their season on the road battling the Bearcats in Ellsworth.

All Sacred Heart football games will be broadcast on the Salina Post YouTube page, with Nicolas Fierro providing play-by-play commentary.

🏈 Knights eye next stage of rebuild in 2025

The Ellsworth Bearcats got off to an electric start in 2024, winning five in a row to open their season before dropping their final four, including a first-round playoff game, down the stretch.

Despite the late-season skid, the Bearcats have now posted three straight winning seasons and have no intention of slowing down now with a strong group of returning veterans.

“I thought we played really hard last year. Our senior class did a good job, and we were in all but one of those games in that four-game losing streak,” Ellsworth head coach Josh Homolka said. “We were in it, we just didn’t have the horses to get it done but everyone’s a year older now.”

The biggest changes for Ellsworth will come in the backfield, where sophomore Carson Jacobs takes over at quarterback, and senior Tucker Goss is promoted to lead back.

“Carson can sling it and he’s not a real big guy, but he’s nimble on his feet and he’s got some shake to him,” Homolka said. “We’re looking forward to Tucker Goss toting the rock quite a bit for us as well. We’ve had a history of guys who spend time at fullback going back to tailback, and that toughness should help us with those extra yards.”

The O-Line will feature four seniors and one junior, with newcomer Drew Davis joining Ethan Tully, Cam Gardner, Micah Galvan, and Keegan Urbanek in the trenches.

At receiver, Cooper McGowan and a converted Jace Thomasson will anchor a group that includes Braylyn Gardner, Jackson Minear and Liam Stone.

The Bearcats are veteran-heavy on defense as well, with three seniors in Cooper McGowan, Tucker Goss, and Micah Galvan at linebacker, Jackson Minear at safety, and Tully, Urbanek and Gardner playing both ways on the line.

“Our linebacking crew is a huge strength for this defense,” he said. “We have three seniors that will be playing back there with Cooper on the outside and one of the best tandems in the 2A with Micah and Tucker on the inside. Those two are as physical and athletic as a lot of college-type guys.”

Drew Davis (DL), Rett Bohl (LB), Liam Stone (CB), and Jace Thomasson (CB) round out the defense as the only non-senior starters on the unit.

“I’m excited about how much experience we have,” Homolka said. “These guys have played a lot of key downs for us, and that always pays off. “I think the sky’s the limit for this team.”

The Bearcats open their season at home on Friday night with an NCAA foe in Sacred Heart.

This game will be broadcast with live video and audio commentary on the Salina Post YouTube page.

Voting will take place in January-February 2026.

The 2026 election will cover districts IV, V, VI — or the central third of Kansas.

Clay, Cloud, Jewell, Mitchell, Osborne, Ottawa, Phillips, Republic, Rooks, Smith, and Washington counties.District V: Barton, Dickinson, Ellis, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Marion, McPherson, Rice, Rush, Russell, and Saline counties.

To be eligible to run, candidates must have been actively engaged in growing that commodity (corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat or sunflowers) within the preceding five years and must reside in and represent the district where they maintain their primary residence.

To be included on the 2026 ballot, candidates must gather 20 signatures from eligible growers, with no more than five signatures from any one county.

Eligible growers are Kansas residents who will be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2026, and who have actively grown corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, sunflowers or wheat for the last three years.

Candidates may choose to collect signatures either on paper or online, or by using a combination of both.

The Salina Area United Way is taking bold steps to expand its reach and impact across North Central Kansas.

As part of its refreshed mission and vision, United Way will be focusing on building new resources and programs to strengthen all ten counties it serves: Saline, Ellsworth, Ottawa, Cloud, Republic, Mitchell, Lincoln, Russell, Jewell, and Osborne.

“Our goal is simple: to unite people and resources in ways that create resilient, thriving communities,” said Christina Small, Executive Director of the Salina Area United Way. “This expansion is about being more intentional with our efforts, ensuring that every county in our region feels the impact of United Way’s work. And just as importantly, every dollar raised will stay in that local county, invested back into their communities."

One area of immediate focus will be the continued growth of the Early Childcare Initiative, which will soon expand to support in-home childcare providers in addition to licensed centers. This work is designed to address one of the region’s most pressing challenges—accessible and affordable childcare—while also supporting providers who play a vital role in early childhood development.

As part of this growth, United Way will place its Funded Partner program on a one-year pause to allow greater focus on expanding its reach and initiatives. This pause will not reduce or cut any existing programs or resources; instead, it allows the organization to focus on building new opportunities that will strengthen families and communities across the region.

As United Way evolves its approach, it remains deeply committed to the organizations that make our region stronger. Many of these partners will continue working alongside United Way through new collaborative initiatives, ensuring that vital programs remain supported while the organization extends its impact across all ten counties.

“This is an exciting moment for us,” added Christina. “We’re not stepping back from our community—we’re stepping up to serve more people, in more places, and in more meaningful ways than ever before.”

Community members and supporters are invited to learn more at the Business After Hours & Campaign Kick-off on Thursday, September 25 from 5:00–7:00 pm at 328 N. Ohio St.

The Salina Area United Way invites community members, businesses and partners to join them in this next chapter of growth. Together, the organization believes North Central Kansas can be stronger, more connected and better equipped to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

Salina Area United WayThe Salina Area United Way is taking bold steps to expand its reach and impact across North Central Kansas. And just as importantly, every dollar raised will stay in that local county, invested back into their communities." One area of immediate focus will be the continued growth of the Early Childcare Initiative, which will soon expand to support in-home childcare providers in addition to licensed centers. “We’re not stepping back from our community—we’re stepping up to serve more people, in more places, and in more meaningful ways than ever before.” Community members and supporters are invited to learn more at the Business After Hours & Campaign Kick-off on Thursday, September 25 from 5:00–7:00 pm at 328 N. Ohio St.The Salina Area United Way invites community members, businesses and partners to join them in this next chapter of growth. Together, the organization believes North Central Kansas can be stronger, more connected and better equipped to meet the challenges of tomorrow. For more information about Salina Area United Way’s mission and initiatives, visit www.unitedwaysalina.org.
