Q: Do you plan to keep Isiah Pacheco out of the yellow no-contact jersey?

REID: “Yeah as long as nothing happened today.”

Q: We haven’t seen Tershawn Wharton in practice for a few days. Did he have a setback with his knee injury?

REID: “(His) knew swole up a little bit but he’s feeling good now.”

Q: We saw Shane Buechele come in before Blaine Gabbert in the last preseason game. Any change there in the quarterback depth chart?

REID: “Those two are real close, they’re real close so they’re competing. We’ll just let it play out here (and) see how it goes but it’s good competition.”

Q: How do you prep for playing in the heat Saturday? Just by practicing in the heat today?

REID: “Yeah, these next couple of days I think are probably going to take care of that. I think it cools down just a little bit, I think you’re looking at 89 (degrees) or something like that. It’ll be warm, we’ll just keep our rotation going. We’re going to have that (heat) in Jacksonville and possibly our night game against the Lions, but Jacksonville is a noon game so we got to be ready for a hot one there too.”

Q: How do you feel about the back end of the wide receiver competition right now and who will make the roster?

REID: “Well I don’t know that yet they’re competing like crazy. You keep six or seven of those guys. That six and seven spot is going to be (a) pretty good battle. We’ll see how it all winds down there as we go but it’s wide open for those players.”

Q: In what ways have you seen Shane Buechele grow here since his first year?

REID: “Listen he’s familiar with the offense, he knows how we do things, he’s got a pretty good feel for the game just in general. You can see the improvement he’s made from last year with his accuracy, throws, choices on his throws, he’s had a chance to look at these coverages and blitzes that these coordinators throw at you so he’s got that part of it too.”

Q: Any chance Kadarius Toney comes back to practice soon?

REID: “We’ll see, probably not tomorrow.”

Q: Was it a challenge to practice today with the heat?

ANUDIKE-UZOMAH: “It was pretty hot, but it’s good work. All work is good work, so I’m glad we took today and glad we improved today.”

Q: After playing in your first few games, what have you learned? Are there things you can take away from them?

ANUDIKE-UZOMAH: “Yeah. Obviously playing in my first game as a – in the four (man) front is different from K-State (Kansas State) where we were just in a three (man front). Also, just the pace of it is different, and there’s still a lot of improvement I need to do for me to be obviously a pretty good rusher. The last two games were definitely something I really needed.”

Q: Are there specific things you are working on?

ANUDIKE-UZOMAH: “Like I said, really just playing faster, knowing what I – footwork and everything like that. The basics things just to improve – just to stack on so I can be better.”

Q: What have the past two weeks looked like for you development-wise?

ANUDIKE-UZOMAH: “Development wise, I still have a ways to go. I got a little bit better. I got the hang of things, but obviously, it’s just preseason so – but it was good work just to have me go out there and play against real people, play against NFL people that are different than my teammates.”

Q: We saw you help block an edge rusher in that last game, can you sort of take me through that and what you were thinking?

RICE: “In practice we (have been) working that a lot. I watched a couple clips of the tight ends doing it last year and my goal was to not let that big D-end you know, get to the quarterback and I accomplished my goal on that play (laughter). I was real confident on that one.”

Q: How did you stay focused after that first early drop last game?

RICE: “First off, I had the veterans make sure that I wasn’t getting down on myself. They kind of could see me – if I get on the sideline and I’ll just be staring straight and then they’ll be like ‘next play, you got a lot more game to play’. I got teammates on the team that are always telling me to ‘seize the moment’ and I

feel like I’m in a great position right now, so I just cleared to the next play and know I have a lot more game to play.”

Q: How familiar are you with the playbook, do you feel comfortable yet?

RICE: “Yeah, I feel really comfortable. You can never know the playbook too much with (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid. The more positions you know on the field, the more you’ll be on the field. I just feel like as much as I’m in the playbook when I’m here or when I’m at home it’s going to help me contribute to the offense.”

Q: What kind of things can you do to work on yards after the catch?

RICE: “You’d be surprised, every time somebody has the ball or doesn’t have the ball on the field, we are saying ‘finish’. If I got the ball, I’m making a move on the defender. Whether it looks like, he made the tackle or not I’m acting like he didn’t make the tackle, and I’m finishing down the field.”

Q: What did you do to help cut out some weight from last season to this one?

SHELTON: “This time last year I was probably like upper 50s (&gt;350 lbs.), right now I’m about 12lbs under. I used to use intermittent fasting but then I got stuck, it wasn’t working anymore. I did carb cycling in March in OTA’s and it worked like magic for me. (My) energy has been great, feel great, joints feel great and everything.”

Q: There was a play against the Saints where you took off and jumped for a guy. Are you feeling some of the benefits form losing weight?

SHELTON: “Yeah, that was like the old Danny (laughter). Back in the day, I used to be flying everywhere. It just felt great being out there running with the guys. We have a great group of guys, young guys, everybody is competitive. I was telling (Defensive Line) Coach (Joe) Cullen that during training camp that I was impressed with how everybody came prepared during training camp and just up the competition level. Yeah, being out there, it was just fun to just compete with everybody.”

Q: Without Chris Jones here, you’re the veteran. Do you feel like people are looking at you for advice and being a leader?

SHELTON: “Not at all. I’m obviously more experienced than a lot of the guys, so I’m just sharing the knowledge that I got from older guys that I played with. I’m just keeping their heads in the game because it’s really tough, especially during this time when we get close to decision making and just trying to get everybody to be at ease and be able to play your game. That’s probably the fun part of being the older guy. You get to remind guys that it’s not always this tough (like) training camp mode. You just have to grind it out and make it through it and then it gets better.”

Q: What would it mean to you if you made the final roster this year?

SHELTON: “I mean, everything. I go in, my mindset is not to make this team but to be on the field. I want to win my third ring and in order to do that I need to be on the field, and I need to contribute. Not saying that being on practice squad last year, I didn’t contribute but that’s not the lifestyle I want to live. I came

in the league wanting to play the game that I love and being on the side last year kind of remotivated me. Even at the Super Bowl and everything, it remotivated me to get back into it, get back in shape and that was my goal coming into training camp. Be locked in and I’m ready to win my third ring, whether it’s here or wherever I go. Obviously, I love being here and it would mean the world to stay here and have the family come out.”

“Yeah, it’s just that. He’s a mobile guy and I think some of that too is the timing of the play. He got a little bit off, so when he’s expecting guys to be where they are at and they’re not, that’s what is going to happen. Maybe one or two bust protection, or whatever. (There are) things we need to clean up, but I did think that he did a good job of getting us out of trouble a couple times and extending some plays. I thought he operated well in the two-minute, which is good to see. He will have some things, like everybody after a win or loss, that we have to look at and get cleaned up but I think he did a good job on that.”

On if giving up over 500 yards to the Kansas City offense is a concern:

“Yeah, it’s a concern. When the ball goes over your head, it’s a concern. So we won’t win many games if we do that.”

On S Isaiah Simmons's performance today:

“I’ve got to watch the tape on that. I know he had the one penalty and it was a bang bang (play). It was a good physical play and a couple times in coverage, he may have lost leverage, but we will go back to the tape and get him cleaned up.”

“I think he has to step into his throws and make sure his hands are over the ball. A couple of times he's sailed a couple and we are working on that. But a lot of times that’s not delivery, it’s footwork. At times, it can be hard when that rush is barreling down on you. We’ll get that cleaned up.”

On his thoughts on WR Greg Dortch's touchdown:

“Yeah, I thought it was good. He is tough and scrappy. They ended up calling that one back, that was the review, but then we punched it in there so that was a good play by him.”

On if eight penalties for 82 yards was due to lack of discipline or focus and how to fix it:

“I don’t think it’s lack of focus or lack of discipline. I think it is a lack of technique. When you play with bad technique, you get penalized, and that is what happened. You obviously have to get that corrected. They kind of go in waves a little bit and sometimes that is how the crews calling it and we have to play within the rules. Typically, when you get penalized it is for bad technique.”

“I thought he looked good. Made some runs and made a couple of guys miss. That touchdown run was pretty special so it was good to have him back in there. That was his first exposure in a live game. I know he was lattered up pretty good, he had a good attitude, he did a good job. And the O-Line did good when they were in there with him. They opened up some holes and created some displacement."

“I think he needs the reps. For being a rookie quarterback, he needs the reps. To be able to see different things and Spegs (Chiefs Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) is one of the best defensive coordinators there is. He gave us a lot of looks and that’s good because that’s what real ball is. I thought he handled it well, he changed a couple of protections, changed some points in the run game, missed a couple too, got us out of bad plays, but it was good. I wanted to see him play.”

On the challenges of having to defend against a mobile quarterback:

“Yeah, it just goes to show you that, with a guy like that, you have to defend a little differently. Our guys are versed on that but there’s going to be times, that’s the NFL today, there’s a free runner, there’s going to be leakage at times. You’ve got to extend plays and make plays with your feet. I thought he did good with it.”

On the communication with Offensive Coordinator Drew Petzing and Defensive Coordinator Nick Rallis:

“Actually it was pretty seamless, I thought. Kind of the same as last week. Drew being up there, I thought they handed it well. Is was down, I know he was on the headset with him, so I’ll talk to Drew about it tomorrow and see where he wants to go.”

“We have to have soft hands. It’s repetition. They’re working at it every day, sometimes that is how the ball bounces. When you do get open and we hit those guys, we have to convert those because those are missed chances. That’s honestly the difference. They didn’t have a lot of drops, we had some drops. That’s not the difference of the game, but those things matter.”

On what aspect of the game, besides the loss, he is most disappointed in:

“Honestly, the explosives. I think that, whatever it was, they had over 300 yards in explosives. I think they had eight or nine explosives. You’re not going to beat anybody like that. That is one of our core principles of defense. So truthfully, that is what I am most displeased about.”

On how QB Colt McCoy did in the first unit offense:

“He did good. He didn’t convert a couple of third downs, but I thought the operation was good and we had some plays in there that he hit. He was good.”

On how much of the loss is attributed to playing against the Chiefs:

I thought we did a good job of getting back into the game there before the half, just couldn’t sustain it. All three phases we have got to get cleaned up or that is what’s going to happen against a good football team, you’re going to get beat pretty good. It will be very black-and-white to our guys what we need to improve in a hurry. We have to improve that going into Minnesota for those practices and the game so we can be a little more competitive.”On QB Clayton Tune’s play throughout the game with his legs and decision making:“Yeah, it’s just that. He’s a mobile guy and I think some of that too is the timing of the play. He got a little bit off, so when he’s expecting guys to be where they are at and they’re not, that’s what is going to happen. Maybe one or two bust protection, or whatever. (There are) things we need to clean up, but I did think that he did a good job of getting us out of trouble a couple times and extending some plays. I thought he operated well in the two-minute, which is good to see. REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, I mean listen, it’s all part of the game. They’ve got to get ready for the game and at the same time – I think it’s tough going into the first game, it’s going to be fast, much faster than what you get presented at practice, a regular season game. This at least is another step up from that, just a little kick up speed wise in the game.”

Q:&nbsp;What do you want to see different from preseason game one?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, you’re always looking for execution as you go. Increased execution from the first one. Not that we’ve spent a ton more time with the guys on the (Arizona) Cardinals, that’s not it. It’s a pretty simple game plan again. They’re another week into those plays, so you’re expecting, particularly the young guys to handle that the right way. Old guys knock the rust off, keep chipping away at that.”

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, we know what the field has been. We’ve checked on it, which we do every week everywhere. It’s actually in pretty good playing shape. Q:&nbsp;In these past few days, it’s looked like you had La’Mical Perine more plays with the top team. What did you see from him?

REID:&nbsp;“He’s got a knack. He kind of does everything well. You know, he’s good in the pass game, good protection, good in the run game, good eyes, vision, feet. So, he’s been very consistent through the camp, and he picks things up easy so that’s been good for him I think.”

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, up here I just mentioned it to the team that you started this foundation, this is where it starts, you’re building this thing as it goes on. Every week is different, every day is different in this thing, but you have accomplished some things here that’s going to help carry you through the season in a positive way. Then we take it one day at a time from there just like they did when they were up here, you had to focus in, you couldn’t say a month ago that we’re looking for this day right here or you’re not going to get any good work out of it. MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I thought it was a good camp. We improved on a lot of stuff. We didn’t add a lot of new receivers but getting those new receivers in and getting them flowing around. Offense, defense and special teams kind of just flew around and we competed every day which you always want.”

I think y’all know as much as anybody that the receiver position and the DB position at training camp are that hardest place to be (with) how much running that we do. I thought those guys got better and better and they learned how to finish and how to keep that mentality throughout an entire practice. Their talent – they have the talent – every receiver that I’ve always (worked with) have a lot of talent, but you have to learn how to be consistent every single day and I think they got better and better at that as they continue to go.”

Q:&nbsp;You’ve been here for seven camps now, what do you appreciate about this particular setup for camp?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I really am interested and really have fun meeting people. A lot of times when you’re in the building, you’re with the offense and even though you’re in the team meetings, you don’t get to see the defensive guys except for really on the traveling on gameday and that weekend. So being able to eat lunch, go to Chick-Fil-A, go get some pizza, whatever it is with different guys that you’re not around all year long. You build those relationships and I think that’s the best part about St. Joe is that you get out here and you really get to see those guys you don’t see maybe as much throughout the year and build those relationships. That’s what builds that bond you have whenever times get tough during the regular season.”

Q:&nbsp;What do you want to see in the second preseason game, compared to the first preseason game?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Just better energy, better urgency just from the get-go. I thought the young guys did a great job in the second half of kind of picking it up. But I think just from the get-go, offense and defense, just having that urgency to go out there and compete. It’s a preseason game and obviously the results don’t necessarily matter but they do if you want to build a culture of winning. We have a lot of young guys and even though they won a Super Bowl, they know how to respond and get even better the second year. So, I think just having better urgency from the get-go throughout the entire game, not as much the result, you obviously want to win but you want to have that mentality throughout the entire game.”

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“You can but I think more it’s just the day-to-day grind throughout the entire camp and then to the regular season and throughout thew season. You have to keep that mentality; I’ve had some great camps where we came in and that mentality didn’t go throughout the entire season and you didn’t get that pay off that you wanted. So, even though I feel like we had a great camp, we have to have that mentality, it’s not done. I mean we still have weeks of practice getting ready for the game – first regular season game against the Detroit Lions, a team that’s hungry and ready to come out there and try to beat us. LOS ANGELES (AP) —Jerry Moss, a music industry giant who co-founded A&amp;M Records with Herb Alpert and rose from a Los Angeles garage to the heights of success with hits by Alpert, the Police,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-lifestyle-california-richard-carpenter-karen-carpenter-c3d79d349ec958a2146804b95ee04f18">the Carpenters</a>&nbsp;and hundreds of other performers, has died at 88.

Moss, inducted with Alpert into the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, died Wednesday at his home in Bel Air, California, according to a statement released by his family. He died of natural causes, his widow Tina told The Associated Press.

“They truly don’t make them like him anymore and we will miss conversations with him about everything under the sun,” the statement reads in part, “the twinkle in his eyes as he approached every moment ready for the next adventure.”

Among the label's singles: Alpert's “A Taste of Honey,” the Captain and Tennille's “Love Will Keep Us Together,” Frampton's “Show Me the Way” and “Every Breath You Take,” by the Police.

“Every once in a while a record would come through us and Herbie would look at me and say, ‘What did we do to deserve this, that this amazing thing is going to come out on our label?’” Moss told Artist House Music, an archive and resource center, in 2007.

His music connections also led to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jerry-moss-horse-racing-1d4753a5fe8e783b5cb8112f0857a8bd">a lucrative horse racing business</a>&nbsp;that he owned with his second wife, Ann Holbrook. In 1962, record manufacturer Nate Duroff lent Alpert and Moss $35,000 so they could print 350,000 copies of Alpert's instrumental "The Lonely Bull," the label's first major hit. A decade later, Duroff convinced Moss to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/0f92ef9ef12b47b087d77db2d1f044cd">invest in horses.</a>

The Mosses' Giacomo, named for the son of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/sting">A&amp;M artist Sting,</a>&nbsp;won the Kentucky Derby in 2005.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/zenyatta-broodmare-career-ends-1cb8ded172a64395bd65ef5253da4505">Zenyatta,</a>&nbsp;in honor of the Police album "Zenyatta Mondatta," was runner-up for Horse of the Year in 2008 and 2009 and won the following year. A hit single by Sting gave Moss the name for another profitable horse, Set Them Free.

Moss made one of his last public appearances in January when he was honored with a tribute concert at the Mark Taper Forum in downtown Los Angeles. Among the performers were Frampton, Amy Grant and Dionne Warwick, who wasn't an A&amp;M artist but had been close to Moss from the time he helped promote her music in the early 1960s. While Moss didn’t speak at the ceremony, many others praised him.

“Herb was the artist and Jerry had the vision. It just changed the face of the record industry,” singer Rita Coolidge said on the event’s red carpet. “Certainly A&amp;M made such a difference and it’s where everybody wanted to be.”

Moss' survivors include his second wife, Tina Morse, and three children.

Born in New York City and an English major at Brooklyn College, Moss had wanted to work in show business since waiting tables in his 20s and noticing that the entertainment industry patrons seemed to be having so much fun. After a six-month Army stint, he found work as a promoter for Coed Records and eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he met and befriended Alpert, a trumpeter, songwriter and entrepreneur.

With an investment of $100 each, they formed Carnival Records and had a local hit with "Tell It to the Birds," an Alpert ballad released under the name of his son, Dore Alpert. After learning that another company was called Carnival, Alpert and Moss used the initials of their last names and renamed their business A&amp;M, working out an office in Alpert's garage and designing the distinctive logo with the trumpet across the bottom.

"We had a desk, piano, piano stool, a couch, coffee table and two phone lines. And that for the two of us worked out very well, because we could go over the songs on the piano and make phone calls to the distributors," Moss later told Billboard. "We also had an answering service at the time. I'd do all my own billing."

For several years they specialized in "easy listening" acts such as Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Brazilian artist&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/5668be45b7f84a5e88bb50c9b32090ff">Sergio Mendes</a>&nbsp;and the folk-rock trio the Sandpipers. After attending the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, rock's first major festival, Moss began adding rock performers, including Cocker,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-europe-music-arts-and-entertainment-london-65ab9d9862893ff8f75afaf0879ffc72">Procol Harum</a>&nbsp;and Free.

One of their biggest triumphs was "Frampton Comes Alive!" a live double album from 1976 that sold more than 6 million copies in its first year and transformed Frampton from mid-level performer to superstar.

"Peter was a huge live star in markets like Detroit and San Francisco, so we made a suggestion that he make a live record," Moss told Rolling Stone in 2002. "What he was doing onstage wasn't like the records — it was outrageously better. I remember being at the mix of 'Frampton Comes Alive!' at Electric Lady studios, and I was so blown away I asked to make it a double album."

A&amp;M continued to expand their catalog through the 1970s and '80s, taking on the Police, Squeeze, Joe Jackson and other British New Wave artists, R&amp;B musicians Janet Jackson and Barry White and country rockers 38 Special and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

By the late '80s, Alpert and Moss were operating out of a Hollywood lot where Charlie Chaplin once made movies, but they struggled to keep up with ever-higher recording contracts and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2b90d45f86ab423f8654071f8bf4cff2">sold A&amp;M</a>&nbsp;to Polygram for an estimated $500 million. They remained at the label, but clashed with Polygram's management and left in 1993, one of their last signings a singer-musician from Kennett, Missouri:&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/sheryl-crow">Sheryl Crow.</a>&nbsp;(Alpert and Moss later sued Polygram for violating their contract’s integrity clause and reached a $200 million settlement.)

For a few years, Alpert and Moss ran Almo Records, where performers included Garbage, Imogen Heap and Gillian Welch.

"We wanted people to be happy," Moss told The New York Times in 2010. “You can't force people to do a certain kind of music. They make their best music when they are doing what they want to do, not what we want them to do.”

Sheri Lynn (Leister) Roesner, 58, died on July 31, 2023. She was born on June 14, 1965, to Gayle and Helen (Hoeffner) Leister. She attended South East of Salina and graduated from Sacred Heart High School where she was Homecoming Queen in 1983.&nbsp; She attended Dental Hygiene School at Wichita State and Kansas State University where she worked her way onto the Dean’s List in 86, 87 and her final graduation year in 88 and went on to be a highly esteemed hygienist in Austin, TX.

The name “Sheri” is derived from the word “Sunshine” and that is an understatement of who she was. She was the life of every party, light of every room and she will be deeply and dearly missed.

Growing up, Sheri was fond of riding horses, bowling, cheerleading and helping out with the family business.&nbsp; She was an avid traveler and speed walker and Lake Travis visitor. She was happiest on her boat listening to country music, spending time with her family, walking her dog “Buddy”, or somewhere on the beach. Her 3 children, Colton, Chase and Alyssa, were her whole life until she became “grandma” to Oaklynn, Parker and Stella.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gayle, her grandparents, William and Minnie Hoeffner and Glenn and Verna Leister. She was united in marriage to Tom Roesner.

She is survived by her children, Colton (Samantha), Chase, and Alyssa (Steven) Anderson; her mother, Helen and stepfather, Kenny Meyer; three brothers, Rick (Tina), Randy and Rusty (Kelly) and her beloved grandchildren, Oaklynn, Parker and Stella and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 am Saturday, August 19, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. A Rosary service will be offered at 10:00 a.m. prior to the Mass. Interment will be private in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Ryan Mortuary on Friday, August 18, 2023, where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm that evening. Los Angeles (AP) —<a href="https://apnews.com/article/-----e0de46d3454745658248d5c1c78c3f08/gallery/c65d111282a941f0b4ef16e49aa98d41">Robbie Robertson,</a>&nbsp;The Band's lead guitarist and songwriter who in such classics as “The Weight,” “Up on Cripple Creek” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" mined and helped reshape American music, died Wednesday at 80.

Robertson died surrounded by family in Los Angeles “after a long illness,” publicist Ray Costa said in a statement.

From their years as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/bob-dylan">Bob Dylan's</a>&nbsp;masterful backing group to their own stardom as embodiments of old-fashioned community and virtuosity, The Band profoundly influenced popular music in the 1960s and '70s, first by literally amplifying Dylan’s polarizing transition from folk artist to rock star and then by absorbing the works of Dylan and Dylan's influences as they fashioned a new sound immersed in the American past.

The Canadian-born Robertson was a high school dropout and one-man melting pot — part-Jewish, part-Mohawk and Cayuga — who fell in love with the seemingly limitless sounds and byways of his adopted country and wrote out of a sense of amazement and discovery at a time when the Vietnam War had alienated millions of young Americans. His life had a “Candide”-like quality as he found himself among many of the giants of the rock era — getting guitar tips from Buddy Holly, taking in early performances by Aretha Franklin and by the Velvet Underground, smoking pot with the Beatles, watching the songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller develop material, chatting with Jimi Hendrix when he was a struggling musician calling himself Jimmy James.

The Band began as supporting players for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-elvis-presley-conway-twitty-jerry-lee-lewis-arkansas-14e27228b9e253f18457d62325c91807">rockabilly star Ronnie Hawkins</a>&nbsp;in the early 1960s and through their years together in bars and juke joints forged a depth and versatility that opened them to virtually any kind of music in any kind of setting. Besides Robertson, the group featured Arkansan drummer-singer&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-music-new-york-mavis-staples-c11f1340f9ea8d87e1606da6c1599ff3">Levon Helm</a>&nbsp;and three other Canadians: bassist-singer-songwriter Rick Danko, keyboardist singer-songwriter Richard Manuel and all-around musical wizard Garth Hudson. They were originally called the Hawks, but ended up as The Band — a conceit their fans would say they earned — because people would point to them when they were with Dylan and refer to them as “the band.”

They remain defined by their first two albums, “Music from Big Pink” and “The Band,” both released in the late 1960s. The rock scene was turning away from the psychedelic extravagances of the Beatles' “Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band” and a wave of sound effects, long jams and lysergic lyrics. "Music from Big Pink,” named for the old house near Woodstock, New York, where Band members lived and gathered, was for many the sound of coming home. The mood was intimate, the lyrics alternately playful, cryptic and yearning, drawn from blues, gospel, folk and country music. The Band itself seemed to stand for selflessness and a shared and vital history, with all five members making distinctive contributions and appearing in publicity photos in plain, dark clothes.

Through the “Basement Tapes” they had made with Dylan in 1967 and through their own albums, The Band has been widely credited as a founding source for Americana or roots music. Fans and peers would speak of their lives being changed. Eric Clapton broke up with his British supergroup Cream and journeyed to Woodstock in hopes he could join The Band, which influenced albums ranging from The Grateful Dead’s “Workingman's Dead” to Elton John's “Tumbleweed Connection.” The Band's songs were covered by Franklin, Joan Baez, the Staple Singers and many others. During a television performance by the Beatles of “Hey Jude,” Paul McCartney shouted out lyrics from “The Weight.”

Like Dylan, Robertson was a self-taught musicologist and storyteller who absorbed everything American from the novels of William Faulkner to the scorching blues of Howlin' Wolf to the gospel harmonies of the Swan Silvertones. At times his songs sounded not just created, but unearthed. In “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” he imagined the Civil War through the eyes of a defeated Confederate.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/b020697a3c604542ad250f75ab754b80">In “The Weight,”</a>&nbsp;with its lead vocals passed around among group members like a communal wine glass, he evoked a pilgrim's arrival to a town where nothing seems impossible:

“I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin’ about half past dead / I just need some place where I can lay my head / Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed? / He just grinned and shook my hand, ‘No,’ was all he said.”

The Band played at the 1969 Woodstock festival, not far from where they lived, and became newsworthy enough to appear on the cover of Time magazine. But the spirit behind their best work was already dissolving. Albums such as “Stage Fright” and “Cahoots” were disappointing even for Robertson, who would acknowledge that he was struggling to find fresh ideas. While Manuel and Danko were both frequent contributors to songs during their “Basement Tapes” days, by the time “Cahoots” was released in 1971, Robertson was the dominant writer.

They toured frequently, recording the acclaimed live album “Rock of Ages” at Madison Square Garden and joining Dylan for 1974 shows that led to another highly praised concert release, “Before the Flood.” But in 1976, after Manuel broke his neck in a boating accident, Robertson decided he needed a break from the road and organized rock's ultimate sendoff, an all-star gathering at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom that included Dylan, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Muddy Waters and many others. The concert was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/martin-scorsese-cannes-history-529f5f118fe0fed0ea1b07bd15220d93">filmed by Martin Scorsese</a>&nbsp;and the basis for his celebrated documentary “The Last Waltz,” released in 1978.

Robertson had intended The Band to continue recording together but “The Last Waltz” helped permanently sever his friendship with Helm, whom he had once looked to as an older brother. In interviews and in his 1993 memoir “Wheel on Fire,” Helm accused of Robertson of greed and outsized ego, noting that Robertson had ended up owning their musical catalog and calling “The Last Waltz” a vanity project designed to glorify Robertson. In response, Robertson contended that he had taken control of the group because the others — excepting Hudson — were too burdened by drug and alcohol problems to make decisions on their own.

“It hit me hard that in a band like ours, if we weren't operating on all cylinders, it threw the whole machine off course,” Robertson wrote in his memoir “Testimony,” published in 2016.
