Today in History -- Oct. 6

Dictionaries are history books, not law books. And these months of school disruption are setting records for the invention of new educational terms and modifying old terms.

“Breakout rooms” were separate rooms or partitioned spaces within a single large classroom that provided for smaller groups of students, often to differentiate instruction for different ability levels. Now these may be extra rooms to provide spacing. Or in cyberspace, it is a reduction in students a teacher must “interact” with during an online lesson since the regular class-size array of online participants causes many students to feel they are ignored.

The “distributed campus” is a more complicated university level concept. It involves not only the spreading out of students across a university to prevent extended periods of close contact, but also includes timing of classes, timing of transport, offsetting of meal times, distancing of seats and desks, etc.

“Crisis learning” is education that takes place during an external crisis (not a student’s personal family crisis). This term was resurrected during this 2020 pandemic to lower expectations that online or remote learning would be equivalent to face-to-face learning and is also called “emergency remote learning.” It has not prevented the tech-industrial complex from lying that their digital devices provide even better education than face-to-face instruction.

“Gating criteria” are the series of conditions that need to be met for students to enter public school buildings and return to face-to-face teaching. Such criteria are generally developed by medical experts.

“Learning hubs” are an invention this pandemic. Despite distribution of digital equipment, there are homeless K-12 students living in a car or couch-surfing who cannot connect, as well as a substantial portion of students with equipment who just never connect. The attempt to get them to cluster in learning hubs is a variation on learning pods that are usually home-based. So far, it is not very successful.

“Discovery duffels” are being used in Colorado districts. It provides K-5 students with bags filled with enrichment supplies, STEM and other learning materials. Teachers across subjects refill the bags with supplies to provide students hands-on activities.

“Skip-year growth” is the comparison of student achievement scores across two years to provide an accurate assessment of students' academic progress, and to measure how school closures affected student progress.

“Slide reversal” is the attempt to make-up learning loss that always occurred during summer vacation but now attempts to recover the lost class time due to the pandemic.

“High-dosage tutoring” is one-on-one tutoring beyond what is normally provided. This is hyped as a method to make up the loss of learning during the pandemic. It is also considered “personalized learning” because a tutor can address just those shortfalls in learning specific to a student. It is also considered a form of Socratic learning, although the school lessons are standardized and Socratic learning is free form and pursues open questioning.

“Social disconnect” is the reduced teacher-student interaction that occurs in distance learning, primarily used to describe the ineffectiveness of online methodology during the pandemic.

“Covid-19 safety influencers” are college students hired to encourage classmates to wear masks and follow rules against off-campus partying. This can also occur in businesses and government agencies. &nbsp;

“Datacasting” is a proposed new use of television signals to transmit a one-way, encrypted signal to deliver lessons without a broadband internet connection. It requires an antennae and connected device.

For teaching evaluation, teachers were sometimes videotaped in class so they could see their teaching. I preferred to watch students’ facial reactions for effective teaching. Now with teachers online, “video coaching” uses the videos of teachers and student to judge teaching effectiveness. However, the resolution is so low that it is not possible to see eye pupil dilation or most other signs of student understanding.

All of the above is considered irrelevant and unneeded to those suffering “pandemic denial,” the continued refusal of parents or school board members to take this pandemic seriously and take reasonable and science-based precautions to minimize contagion.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Irish-born William Campbell, Satoshi Omura and of Japan and Tu Youyou of China won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discoveries that helped doctors fight malaria and infections caused by roundworm parasites.

One year ago: A Taliban official said a delegation from the group had met with a U.S. envoy in the Pakistani capital; it was the first such encounter since President Donald Trump announced a month earlier that a peace deal to end Afghanistan's 18-year war was dead. Iraqi protesters pressed on with anti-government rallies in the capital and across several provinces for a fifth day, setting government offices on fire; security agencies fatally shot 19 protesters and wounded more than three dozen.

Defense Secretary Wilson--whose departmental funding comprised most of the federal budget--bore the brunt of Humphrey's anti-spending campaign, while struggling to master his brief and control the restive military bureaucracy.

Worthen is a former senior executive and Russian affairs specialist at the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C.

HUTCHINSON —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged violent attack on two women and have made an arrest.

Braxton Allen, 21, is being held on a bond of $350,000 on requested charges of of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, and aggravated robbery and a single count of felony criminal damage to property.

A 24-year-old woman from Hutchinson and 22-year-old woman from Lyons reported to police that they were beaten, restrained&nbsp; and had property damaged and taken from them by a man identified as Allen, according to a media release.&nbsp;

Just after 3:30a.m. Thursday, police located Allen and booked him into the Reno County Correctional Facility.

TOPEKA — Former Kansan 
Kevin Young was named Wednesday as director of the Smithsonian’s 
National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Young is best known as a 
poet, author, essayist and editor. He’s published 11 books of poetry, 
two works of nonfiction and served as editor of 10 other works, 
including a book coming out this fall, “African American Poetry: 250 
Years of Struggle and Song.”

He will start in January 
at the museum in Washington, D.C. He will remain director of the 
Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City until 
December. Since 2016, he’s been poetry editor at The New Yorker magazine
 and is expected to retain that post.

Young, 49, said he was 
eager to be part of the museum’s powerful influence on visitors and to 
reveal the central role of African American culture in the nation’s 
experience. He wants to further conversations “around Black history, 
art, liberation and joy.”

“I look forward to 
directing the National Museum of African American History and Culture in
 this next phase of leadership, after its founding, opening and dynamic 
exhibitions and events,” Young said. “Having visited the museum myself 
with my family, I know what a powerful place it is.”

He was born in Nebraska, 
but his family lived in six different places before he reached the age 
of 10. His family settled in Topeka, where he began to pursue writing at
 age 13 following a summer writing class at Washburn University in 
Topeka.

He earned degrees at 
Harvard and Brown universities, and held a two-year fellowship at 
Stanford University. He taught at Emory University for 11 years.

Lonnie Bunch, the museum’s founding director, said Young would bring a mix of scholarship, technological savvy and bold vision.

“As a poet, he understands
 how the museum fulfilled the dreams of many Americans, and under his 
leadership the museum will shape the hopes of future generations.”

During his four-year 
tenure as director of the Schomburg Center, Young secured the 
Harlem-based archives of Harry Belafonte, James Baldwin, Ossie Davis and
 Ruby Dee, Sonny Rollins and Fred “Fab 5 Freddy” Brathwaite and the 
manuscript of “The Autobiography of Malcolm X,” including a once-lost 
chapter. At the Schomburg Center, he raised $10 million in grants and 
donations and bolstered attendance by 40%.

Former Kansan to lead Smithsonian museum of African American history, culture

TOPEKA—Law enforcement authorities are investigating the 2017 cold case murder of <a href="https://www.penwellgabeltopeka.com/Obituary/133858/Kianna-Hodge/Topeka-KS">Kianna C. Hodge, </a>18, of Topeka, and have arrested 19-year-old Javon A. Smith of Topeka.

Just before midnight March 4, 2017, police were dispatched to SE 23rd Street and SE Bellview Avenue in reference to shots fired in the area, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Koenen. 

Five adults were injured as a result of the shooting.&nbsp; Police located Hodge in a vehicle near SE 6th Avenue and SE Deer Creek Trafficway. She was pronounced deceased by medical personnel at the scene. 

The four other victims received non-life threatening injuries as a result of the shooting.

“Since 2017, investigators have worked diligently to bring justice to Hodge, the four other shooting victims and their families. I am pleased that today we can announce we have made an arrest in this case,” said Topeka Police Chief Bill Cochran. “Topekans should be very proud of all of the hard work investigators put into this case.”

Police booked Smith Thursday into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that include&nbsp;1st Degree Murder and Aggravated Battery.

Police: Suspect arrested in Kan. teen's cold case killing

Today in History -- Oct. 1

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on multiple charges after a pursuit.

Just before 9:30p.m. Monday, a sheriff's deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet Blazer near NE Paramore Street and North Kansas Avenue in Topeka, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 The driver later identified as Michael Wilkins, 27, Topeka failed to pull over, took off at a high rate of speed and initiated a pursuit. The pursuit ended when the driver collided with a utility pole near NE St. John Street and NE Madison Street. 

Wilkins exited the vehicle and attempted to run. When he saw the lead deputy and his K9 partner, Wilkins quickly returned to the vehicle and placed his hands outside the window.&nbsp;

Deputies took him into custody and during the investigation, located a firearm inside the SUV. The vehicle was reported stolen through the Topeka Police Department. A Sheriff’s Office Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) completed an evaluation and determined Wilkins was impaired by a substance other than alcohol.

He was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for a federal felony warrant and is facing requested charges of Felon in possession of a firearm, Felony flee and elude, Felony possession of stolen property, No vehicle liability insurance,&nbsp;Operating a motor vehicle without a valid license, Vehicle license plate not assigned and&nbsp;Driving under the influence of any drug/combination of drugs

Sheriff's K9 convinces Kan. felon in stolen SUV to surrender

Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Sankey of Belleville, KS, age 82, died September 30, 2020 at the Belleville Health Care Center, Belleville, KS. She was born on September 10, 1938 to Norbert and Margaret Habiger in Concordia, KS. She was raised in Republic, Kansas and graduated from Republic High School in 1956. Beth continued her education at Ft. Hays State University and completed her Bachelor of Science in Education from Kansas University in 1960.

She married Don LeRoy Sankey on August 20, 1960 and taught in the Munden School District for one year. Soon after, the couple moved to Republic, where Don opened his own repair shop, and welcomed the arrival of Ronald, born on June 18, 1961. When Ron was in first grade, Beth went back to work teaching in the Republic Schools, and taught kindergarten for one year and then transferred to high school English. She directed many plays during her teaching career in Republic and enjoyed her students greatly.

Republic was home for the Sankey’s for many years. Both Beth's parents, Norb and Margaret, Don's parents, John and Edna Sankey, and brother and sister-in-law Norman and Helen Sankey were within shouting distance.&nbsp; Not to mention, aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless, dear friends. The couple loved to entertain.&nbsp;

In 1970 the couple purchased the Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealership in Belleville, called Sankey Motors. She continued teaching and also kept books for the dealership for several years and they moved to Belleville in 1993. Her favorite pastime was reading, but coming close were knitting, cross-stitching, sewing and crafting.&nbsp; Her Bridge Club, known as the "Mothers' Night Out" group, enjoyed years of entertainment at their husbands' expense.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one brother, Jim Habiger.

Survivors include son, Ron and wife Lori of Garden City, granddaughter, Jade Sankey of Jacksonville, FL, and grandson and wife, Jon and Nikki Sankey and great-granddaughter Millie Sankey of Panama City Beach, FL, two sister-in-laws Joan Sankey Free of Cleveland, OK, and Jeanette Habiger of Shell Knob, MO, in addition to four nieces and one nephew.

Memorials are requested to the NCK Healthcare Foundation or the Belleville Public Library and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Graveside services will be held at Lake Cemetery in Republic at a later date with Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home of Belleville assisting the family, www.tibbettsfischerfuneralhome.com.
