Donald’s life began on October 11, 1937 in rural Meade, Kansas. He was the son of Henry J. and Margaret L. (Classen) Isaac. &nbsp;He graduated from Meade Bible Academy in 1956, and attended Grace College of the Bible in Omaha, Nebraska. He met Irene Juliette Siebert at Meade Bible Academy and they were married on August 22, 1958, in Ulysses, Kansas. Don was a farmer and rancher in Meade, Kansas and remained on the family farm until moving to Presbyterian Manor in Newton, Kansas. Don also owned and operated Isaac Custom Hay with his son Byron. He and Irene also owned and operated Napa Auto Supply in Meade. He was a member of Emmanuel Mennonite Church in Meade and attended Koerner Heights in Newton until they could no longer attend. He loved watching sports, especially KU Basketball. Don was also an avid Meade Buffalo fan, rarely missing a game, until they moved.

He leaves behind his loving family which includes his children and their spouses, Rick and Gwen Isaac of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Myra and Brent Bergen of Newton, Byron and Patti Isaac of Sublette, Kansas and Stephanie and Bill Clinesmith of Cimarron, Kansas; 25 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Irene of 62 years; brother, Harvey, and two infant brothers, Harry and Levi; sisters, Esther Wiens, Rosella Ediger and Erna Hedstrom; and grandson, Collin Isaac. Don passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at the age of 83 years old.

His family will gather with friends at Lamb Funeral Home, 120 S. Main Street, Whitewater, Kansas, on Tuesday, March 23, from 1-2 p.m. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Whitewater Cemetery. A celebration of life service will be held at New Hope Bible Church 11215 W 13th, Wichita, Kansas at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Ken Harder officiating.

Sue Ellen Ash,&nbsp;age 77, of Wilmington, Ohio, passed away late Sunday night, March 14, 2021, at Clinton Memorial Hospital in Wilmington.&nbsp;She was born September 22, 1943, in Newton, Kansas, daughter of the late Ray Allison &amp; Lillian Jeanette (Smith) Cave.&nbsp;

Sue Ellen had worked as the District Manager for Hallmark Stores and the Clinton County Historical Society, where she passed on her passion for Family History.&nbsp;She attended First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ in Wilmington and was a member of the Federated Church of Whitewater in Kansas.&nbsp;She volunteered a lot with the Wilmington United Methodist Church and all of their committees and especially with the Girl Scouts, where she was a leader for over 10 years.

Her loving family includes her husband, Ronald L. Ash; daughter, Ellen Lee and a son, David Ash, all of Wilmington; 2 sisters, Carolyn Fisher, of Whitewater, KS and Marilyn Ghere, of Sedgwick, KS; and many nieces and nephews.

Today in History -- March 20

JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on numerous charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 2a.m. Thursday, sheriff’s deputies stopped a Honda Civic for a traffic infraction that was northbound near 254th and U.S. Highway 75, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 Further investigation revealed that the pair were allegedly in possession of illegal narcotics. Deputies arrested the driver, Daniel Lee Willits, 44, of Lawrence and booked him into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a controlled substance and criminal use of weapons. 

Deputies also arrested the passenger, Misty Dawn Jane Napier, 24, of Lawrence, and booked her into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges for possession of methamphetamine and no drug tax stamp, according to Morse.

Officers were sent to an apartment complex in the 600 block of South Second Street at approximately 9:19 p.m. Thursday for the report of shots being fired from inside an apartment in the complex, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus reported this morning.

While officers were evacuating the apartment complex, a subject identified as Erick Oswaldo Abrego-Salas, 26, of Salina, contacted officers from inside of the apartment from where the shots came. Abrego-Salas was intoxicated and initially refused to comply with law enforcement orders, Hanus noted. After the apartment complex was evacuated, Abrego-Salas discharged another round from within the apartment, he added. 

Negotiations continued with Abrego-Salas, who then complied with orders from officers on the scene and was taken into custody. After being checked out by Salina Fire Department EMS, Abrego-Salas was taken to the Salina Police Department while a search warrant was sought for his residence, Hanus explained.

Abrego-Salas was later booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, according to Hanus.

Man arrested after shots fired reported in central Salina

TREGO COUNTY —A northwest Kansas man was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences and will spend at least the next 50 years in prison after a Trego County jury found him guilty of raping a 6 year-old last year.

In January a jury found Nathan Russ, 36, WaKeeney, guilty of two counts of rape and one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Russ was arrested in Illinois in July of last year after police in WaKeeney were alerted to possible child abuse.

Following the jury trial Russ was sentenced to two life sentences for rape and 25 years to life for the aggravated indecent liberties with a child conviction earlier this month

The two rape convictions fall under Jessica’s Law which require a life sentence. They will run consecutive with one another, so Russ with serve back-to-back life sentences. The aggravated indecent liberties with a child conviction will run concurrent to the life sentences.

Under Kansas law Russ will not be eligible for parole for 50 year

TREGO COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged child sex crimes.

On January 31, 2020 the WaKeeney Police Department was called to the Trego Grade School for the suspicion of possible child abuse of a 6 year old child, according to a media release.

  The WaKeeney Police Department conducted an investigation and charges were filed by the Trego County Attorney’s Office against Nathan R. Russ, 35, WaKeeney, for Rape and Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child both off-grid felonies. 

Russ was arrested in Illinois and was transported to the Trego County Jail where he is currently being held.

Russ, 35, WaKeeney, for Rape and Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child both off-grid felonies. Russ was arrested in Illinois and was transported to the Trego County Jail where he is currently being held.

Today in History -- March 19

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities investigating a series of arson fire and have made an arrest.

Just before 7:30a.m. Thursday, firefighters responded to a structure fire&nbsp; at 1645 SW 37th Terrace in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.

&nbsp;Upon arrival, fire crews found nothing showing from the exterior of the three story apartment building. Firefighters located a fire on the bottom floor in common hallway. Damages were estimated at $250.00 to the structure, there was no content loss.

Just after 11:30a.m., firefighters responded to 3802 S. Topeka Blvd in reference to a structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find a fire burning on the exterior of a building. The fire was quickly extinguished. Damages are estimated at $500.00 to the structure and $500.00 to its contents.

Just over an hour later firefighters were called back to 1645 SW 37th Terrace and found a fire on the third floor common hallway and an estimated $250.00 in damages.

There were no injuries or fatalities reported with these fire incidents.

A fire investigation’s Unit determined the origin and cause for all three fires as intentionally set. During the course of the investigation a suspect was identified and investigators arrested 43-year-old Jenny Lynn on requested charges of arson and interference. She was transported and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Investigators are working to determine if the suspect is connected to any other fires.

Fire Marshal: Kansas woman accused of setting three fires

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man accused of rape made his first court appearance in the case Wednesday.

Arden Vanhorn, 32, Wichita, was charged with&nbsp;11 crimes, two of which are misdemeanors, four counts of aggravated battery, rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated kidnapping, criminal damage to property (misdemeanor), criminal threat, theft (misdemeanor), and attempted aggravated escape from custody, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.

Just after 4 p.m. on March 14, police responded to check the welfare of a citizen at Harry and Poplar, according to officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp; 

Upon arrival, officers contacted a 47-year-old woman who had injuries and learned an unknown suspect entered the business she was working at in the 1500 block of East Harry in Wichita, held a knife to her, strangled and battered her, and sexually assaulted her.&nbsp; She was able to flee the business and call the police.

Through the investigation, investigators learned of Vanhorn’s involvement in the case. They learned he had been arrested and booked into jail stemming from an aggravated battery and theft investigation on Sunday evening.

His bond is $325,000, according to the district attorney.  His next court appearance is March 25.&nbsp;

Kan. man accused of violent sex assault charged with 11 crimes

A local man with an active warrant now faces additional requested charges after an incident Wednesday afternoon in north Salina.

At approximately 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, an officer with the Salina Police Department recognized Walter C. Shields in the area of North Fourth Street and Forest Avenue, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus reported this morning. The officer confirmed that Shields had an active warrant. Shields was then arrested, put into handcuffs, searched, and placed in a patrol vehicle.  While in handcuffs, Shields spat on an officer, Hanus noted.

During a search of Shield's property, items recognized as controlled substances were identified, he added.

Shields was arrested and booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, Hanus reported.

Salina Presbyterian Manor announces art show winners

Wainwright, ruled unanimously that state courts were required to provide legal counsel to criminal defendants who could not afford to hire an attorney on their own. On this date: In 1910, the first filmed adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel "Frankenstein," a silent short produced by Thomas Edison's New York movie studio, was released.In 1911, Irving Berlin's first major hit, "Alexander's Ragtime Band," was first published by Ted Snyder &amp; Co. of New York.In 1922, Mohandas K.
