KWU indoor track continues to shake up the record book

WICHITA – Marisela Hernandez-Castro (SR/Olivehurst, Calif.) set a Kansas Wesleyan indoor track school record in the weight throw Saturday while competing in the Bethel Thresher Invitational at Wichita State's Heskett Center. 

Hernandez-Castro established the new standard with a throw of 13.26m, which placed her sixth in the event. 

The Coyotes won two events on the day – the men's and women's distance medley relays. Stephanie Martinez (JR/Horizon City, Texas), Molly Watson (FR/Loveland, Colo.), Christina Tripp (FR/Dayton, Idaho) and Daniella Gaona (FR/Clifton, Texas) combined to win the women's race in 14 minutes, 5.17 seconds. Shane Calvin (FR/Lakin, Kan.), Trey Stremel, Daniel York (FR/Linn, Kan.) and Austin Hess (FR/Garden City, Kan.) comprised the men's team that had a winning time of 11:59.52. 

In other women's events, Tripp also had a banner day competing in the mile, finishing second with a time of 5:48.78. 

Martinez placed third in the 600 meters (1:48.25) while Regan Rhodes (SO/Mullinville, Kan.) was eighth (1:55.12) and Cindy Sheaffer (SO/Oberlin, Kan.) ninth (2:01.56). 

Watson also took third in the 400 meters (1:02.39) and Shelbie Luney (FR/Pleasanton, Kan.) was fifth (1:06.39). 

The 4x400-meter relay team of Luney, Rhodes, Sheaffer and Jaden Bezdicek placed fourth in 4:48.8. 

Gaona also finished fifth in the 1,000 meters (3:27.42).  

Nicole Holaday (SO/Gove, Kan.) captured seventh in the shot put (10.87m) and Kayla Edgett (FR/Bellevue, Texas) ninth (10.68m). 

Bezdicek also compete in the 3,000 meters and finished 12th (13:01.32). 

Eryk Kyser (FR/Caney, Kan.) had a busy and productive day for the KWU men, placing third in the long jump (6.27m), fifth in the high jump (1.75m) and 10th in the 400 meters (52.93). 

Calvin also finished fifth in the 1,000 meters (2:42.72) while York was eighth (2:49.95) and Hess 10th (2:52.84). 

Timothy Kilburn (FR/Phoenix, Ariz.) crossed the finish line in fifth place in the mile run (4:51.41) and Michael Vongphakdy (FR/Salina, Kan.) 13th (5:05.22). 

Kilburn was also eighth in the 3,000 meters (9:52.70) and Steve Merrill 14th (10:33.48). 

Julian Urioste (FR/Portales, N.M.) placed 13th in the 200 meters (23.93). 

KWU's final regular season competition will be in the Kansas Conference Championships Feb. 18-20 inside Wichita State's Heskett Center.
