Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend Susan Ann Englert, 70, of Salina, Kansas, passed away at home on February 7th, 2026.

Born in Peterborough, England on September 20, 1955, Susan grew up in the San Diego area, where she met her husband, Ed, before settling in Salina. She was a loving mother to her son and a devoted foster parent through OCCK. Her kindness extended beyond her family, always lending a listening ear to friends or a stranger she met at the thrift store. Professionally, Susan was a jack of all trades, working as a clerk at Kmart and Office Max, a dental assistant in 2009, a butcher, and a house cleaner before her retirement.

Anyone who knew her knew she loved the ocean. As a creative, she enjoyed crafting and sewing. But above all, Susan cherished her family, who brought her endless joy. She was a faithful member of Kingdom Hall.

She is preceded in death by her father Ralph C. Miesen; stepfather, Ben Goss; grandmother, Helen Hulshezer; sister-in-law, Esther McMurtrie; daughter-in-law, Paige Englert; and mother, Chris Waller.

Surviving family members include her husband of 47 years, Ed Englert; son, Tony Englert (Paige) of Salina, KS; grandson, Sean Englert (Ashley) and their children, Ariana and Kyler of Wichita, KS; grandson, Kyle Englert (Ashley) and their children, Azaria and Jakobi of Wichita, KS; granddaughter, Madison Englert of Austin, TX; sister, Tammy Leiker (John) of Ellis, KS; sister, Laura Arbogast (John) of Josephine, TX; brother, Rick Goss of Spokane, WA; in-laws, Carol Dindinger of Charles Town, WV; Karen and Paul Dexter of Trimble, MO; Vaughn McMurtrie of Hays, KS; Chris and Jeff Schlyer of Hays, KS; Kelly and Kelly Englert of Mansfield, TX; stepfather, Walt Waller of Ellis, KS; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Susan’s legacy of love and compassion will be carried on through those who had the privilege to call her family or friend. Her warmth, generosity, and infectious laughter will be forever remembered.

Una Kay Larson Blankenship of McPherson, Kansas passed away peacefully, February 11, 2026, in the presence of family.&nbsp; She was born February 3, 1941 in McPherson to the late Elmer Erick and Amy Ruth Marcella (Ledell) Larson. Una was the first child born into this family. She was married to Donald Ray Blankenship on April 9, 1961 at Trinity Lutheran Church, McPherson, Kansas. Una was a lifelong Lutheran, being baptized and confirmed at Trinity.

Una Kay attended Hilton Grade School and then the consolidated, Sunny Slope Grade School. Una graduated from McPherson High School in 1959. It was during her high school years that she met, dated and eventually married the love of her life, Don. Una worked as a secretary at Strouse’s and Trinity Lutheran Church before they started their family. The couple was blessed with two children, Jeffery Scott and Kenneth Gene. Besides being an attentive mother to the boys, she spent years being Don’s secretary, planner, and dispatcher during his working years in the oil business. To get away from Don’s job demands, they took up camping, a recreational activity they thoroughly enjoyed. In the last few years, she volunteered at Apartment 6 at the McPherson Opera House. She was a spirited and opinionated woman plus a bit persnickety, but listened intently and respected others. She enjoyed beautiful things and this taste was expressed in her home. She was proud of her Swedish roots and really took pleasure in family gatherings and entertaining on Sunday game nights.

Una was a loving and devoted wife of sixty-four years, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear relative and friend to many. She was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, Gus and Esther Blankenship, and infant brother-in-law. She is survived by her husband; sons Jeff and Ken (fiancé Jane); brother Richard (Deana); brother Robert (Jolene); and sister Janet (Richard). She had two grandsons, Christopher (Katie) and Connor (Beth); six great-grandsons, Brayden, Kelley, Craigg, Nathen, Archie and Viggo; and one great-great-grandson, Malachi.

Visitation will be Monday, February 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, February 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Peter Rehwaldt officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in McPherson Cemetery. &nbsp;

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Mexican cartel drone incursion prompted an hourslong closure of airspace around El Paso International Airport in Texas that was lifted on Wednesday morning, the Trump administration said.

Just hours earlier, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/federal-aviation-administration">Federal Aviation Administration</a>&nbsp;had announced a 10-day closure grounding all flights to and from the airport.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a post on X that the FAA and the Defense Department “acted swiftly to address a cartel drone incursion. The threat has been neutralized and there is no danger to commercial travel in the region.” He said normal flights were resuming Wednesday morning, but did not say how many drones were involved or what specifically was done to disable them.

The shutdown “for special security reasons” had been expected to create significant disruptions given the duration and the size of the metropolitan area. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s office referred questions to the FAA.

Steven Willoughby, the deputy director of the counter-drone program at the Department of Homeland Security, told lawmakers in July that nearly every day cartels are using drones to try to bring drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border and surveil Border Patrol agents.

More than 27,000 drones were detected within 500 meters (1,600 feet) of the southern border in the last six months of 2024, he testified, most flying late at night. Homeland Security has said agents have seized thousands of pounds of methamphetamine, fentanyl and other drugs in recent years that cartels were trying to fly across the border using drones.

The airport said in an Instagram post after the closure was announced that all flights to and from the airport would be grounded through late on Feb. 20, including commercial, cargo and general aviation flights. Local newscasts showed stranded travelers with luggage lining up at airline ticket counters and car rental desks at the El Paso airport hours after flights were grounded. The airport posted Wednesday morning that its operations had resumed and encouraged travelers to contact their airlines for the most up-to-date flight information.

Mexican defense and navy secretaries will meet with Northern Command officials in Washington on Wednesday in a meeting attended by several other countries, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said during a news conference. Sheinbaum said the Mexican officials would “listen” in the meeting.

Sheinbaum said her government was going to look into “the exact causes” of the closure. Asked about the explanation given by U.S. officials, she said she had “no information about the use of drones on the border.” She noted that if U.S. authorities have more information they should contact Mexico’s government.

‘The information ... does not add up’

Rep. Veronica Escobar, a Democrat whose district includes El Paso, had urged the FAA to lift the restrictions in a statement Wednesday morning, saying neither her office, the city of El Paso nor airport operations received advance notice.

“I believe the FAA owes the community and the country an explanation as to why this happened so suddenly and abruptly and was lifted so suddenly and abruptly.” Escobar said during a news conference Wednesday morning.

“The information coming from the federal government does not add up,” Escobar said.

Escobar later said she believed the shutdown was not based on Mexican cartel drones in U.S. airspace, saying that “is not what we in Congress have been told.”

When asked about Escobar’s remarks, Pentagon officials said they didn’t have a comment.

The airport describes itself as the gateway to west Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico. Southwest, United, American and Delta all operate flights there, among others.

A similar 10-day temporary flight restriction for special security reasons remained in place Wednesday morning around Santa Teresa, New Mexico, which is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) northwest of the El Paso airport. FAA officials did not immediately explain why that restriction remained in place.

RIO RICO, Ariz. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-mom-missing-arizona-b765fed6b9669441383b75860263ac99">Fresh surveillance images</a>&nbsp;from Nancy Guthrie’s porch the night she went missing, coupled with intense police activity across Arizona and the detention of a man raised hopes that authorities were nearing a major break.

By Wednesday, however, it was unclear where the investigation stood into last week’s disappearance of Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/savannah-guthrie">Savannah Guthrie</a>.

Just hours after the FBI released videos Tuesday of a person wearing a gun holster, ski mask and a backpack and approaching&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-mom-missing-nancy-adaa8af43efe04c252a52616d9037a05">Nancy Guthrie's home</a>&nbsp;in Tucson, authorities announced they had stopped a man near the U.S.-Mexico border for questioning.

The man, though, told several media outlets early Wednesday that he was released after several hours and had nothing to do with Guthrie's disappearance last week.

Authorities have not said what led them to stop the man and had not confirmed he was released. The sheriff's department said its deputies and FBI agents also searched a location Tuesday night in Rio Rico, a city south of Tucson where the man lives.

It was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-nancy-guthrie-mom-missing-534c68bfb666ab8e08123f130f937c2d">the latest twist</a>&nbsp;in an investigation that has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-nancy-guthrie-mom-missing-534c68bfb666ab8e08123f130f937c2d">gripped the nation</a>&nbsp;since Nancy Guthrie disappeared on Feb. 1. The black and white images released by the FBI showing a masked person trying to cover a doorbell camera on Guthrie’s porch marked the first significant break in the case.

The videos — less than a combined minute in length — gave investigators and the public their first glimpse of who was outside Guthrie’s home in the foothills outside Tucson. But the images did not show&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-mom-missing-nancy-adaa8af43efe04c252a52616d9037a05">what happened to her</a>&nbsp;or help determine whether she is still alive.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nancy-guthrie-nest-camera-footage-kidnapper-bd5f1d886543e23f2d105535031c9445">videos were pulled</a>&nbsp;from data on “back-end systems” after investigators spent days trying to find lost, corrupted or inaccessible images.

Even though the images do not show the person's face, investigators are hopeful someone will know who was on the porch that night.

“Even when you have a person who appears to be completely covered, they’re really not. You can see their girth, the shape of their face, potentially their eyes or mouth,” said former FBI agent Katherine Schweit.

Authorities were back near Guthrie’s neighborhood on Tuesday, using vehicles to block her driveway. A few miles away, law enforcement was going door-to-door in the area where daughter Annie Guthrie lives, talking with neighbors as well as walking through a drainage area and examining the inside of a culvert with a flashlight.

Investigators have said for more than a week that they believe Nancy Guthrie was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-mother-missing-arizona-tucson-6c7b78d17d7b647c64f71f64ecaecf8b">taken against her will</a>. She was last seen at home Jan. 31 and reported missing the next day. DNA tests showed blood on her porch was hers, authorities said.

Savannah Guthrie posted the new surveillance images on social media Tuesday, saying the family believes their mother is still alive and offering phone numbers for the FBI and county sheriff.

RIO RICO, Ariz. (AP) — A person was detained for questioning Tuesday in the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, hours after the FBI released surveillance videos of a masked person wearing a handgun holster outside Guthrie’s front door the night she vanished from her Arizona home.

Deputies detained the person during a traffic stop south of Tucson, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. It did not immediately provide details about the person or the location. The FBI referred questions to the sheriff’s office.

A Phoenix, Arizona, television station, KNXV-TV, interviewed a delivery man who said he had been detained by police on suspicions of kidnapping Guthrie. He said he was innocent and that police released him after several hours. Local and federal authorities have not confirmed that the person who they had detained was released.

The department and the FBI were conducting a court-authorized search Tuesday night at a location in Rio Rico, about an hour’s drive south of Tucson, the department said in a statement. It was expected to take several hours.

Until now, authorities have released few details, leaving it unclear if ransom notes demanding money with deadlines already passed were authentic, and whether the Guthrie family has had any contact with whoever took Guthrie.

Investigators had hoped cameras would turn up evidence right away about how Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home in an secluded neighborhood.

But the doorbell camera was disconnected early on Feb. 1. While software recorded movement at the home minutes later, Guthrie did not have an active subscription, so Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos had initially said none of the footage could be recovered. Officials continued working to get the footage.

“We are at an hour of desperation,” she said. “We need your help.”

Much of the nation is closely following the case involving&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/today-savannah-guthrie-mother-missing-2c0512333cfaa6cdb01a82d1992160b2">the longtime anchor</a>&nbsp;of NBC’s morning show.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump watched the new surveillance footage and was in “pure disgust,” encouraging anyone with information to call the FBI.

The FBI this week began posting digital billboards about the case in major cities from Texas to California.

Connor Hagan, a spokesperson for the FBI, said Monday that the agency&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-mom-missing-ransom-deadline-arizona-3977f842fd3d1fd66952d1d763944b9d">was not aware of ongoing communication</a>&nbsp;between Guthrie’s family and any suspected kidnappers. Authorities also had not identified any suspects, he said.

Videos from Guthrie siblings appealed directly to whoever took their mom

Three days after the search began, Savannah Guthrie and her two siblings sent their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-nancy-guthrie-mom-missing-88e8731270d05e6e667730d2ed8633d3">first public appeal</a>&nbsp;to whoever took their mother, saying, “We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen.”

In the recorded video, Guthrie said her family was aware of media reports about a ransom letter, but they first wanted proof their mother was alive.

The next day, Savannah Guthrie’s brother&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-nancy-guthrie-mom-missing-2765f354b498e6146b955162c3b71d4f">again made a plea</a>, saying, “Whoever is out there holding our mother, we want to hear from you. We haven’t heard anything directly."

Nancy Guthrie mystery: Suspect detained and then released

After a year’s hiatus, a special retreat designed to help children navigate the world of grief is back.

The Healing Kids’ Hearts Retreat has a new sponsor and will be held in a new location. But organizers say its purpose remains the same—to offer children who have suffered the loss of someone close to them a safe place where they can ask questions, express their emotions, and connect with other children going through the same thing.

This year’s retreat will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Bob and Pat Schmidt Community Center, 2510 Canterbury Dr.&nbsp;

Parents must register their children by&nbsp;Sunday, March 1.&nbsp;Families may call Jordan at (785) 623-6200, and a registration form will be mailed to them, she said.

The free retreat is designed for children ages 7 through 12 and will include lunch, said Myrna Jordan with Hospice of HaysMed, the new sponsor.

The day will include crafts, games, and other activities. Each child will be assigned a specially trained adult “buddy” for the day.

Doris Schmidt of Victoria, who helped organize the first retreat in 2015, said the event began after a grief support group called Healing Hearts was established in Ellis County to help families who had lost a child.

“This group brought together mothers, fathers, siblings, and grandparents, allowing them to share stories of their beloved child who had passed away. These families, united by grief, sought to support one another through the sharing of experience of their loss.&nbsp;

&nbsp;“Discussion many times was about the feelings the child’s siblings had. How could we create a space where children could express their emotions, ask questions, and connect with other children who were going through the same thing?” Schmidt recalled.

A task force was created, and soon the first retreat took form. 

“The retreat would provide healing activities and guided conversation with a caring adult. Each child has an adult buddy with them to listen when they talk about their loss because so often the children don’t want to talk to mom or dad because they may make them cry.” The kids have already seen their parents cry a lot.

The retreat “quickly gained support from various community organizations, excited to help with the funding to help the children find healing,” Schmidt said.

That community support is still there, which is one reason the retreat has never charged families any registration fees through the years, Schmidt said.

In 2015, that first year, 17 children attended the retreat. Organizers now put a cap on enrollment at 20 children. These can be children who have lost a sibling, parent, grandparent, teacher, or close friend. Children who have attended previous retreat are welcome to attend again, as long as they fall within the 7-to-12 age range, organizers said.

One “adult buddy” recalled that the last time the retreat was held in 2024, the children made memorial stepping-stones to honor their lost loved ones.

One little boy asked if he could make some additional stones. When the “buddy” asked him why, the little boy replied that Grandpa had died, but his grave didn’t yet have a marker. There just hadn’t been enough money to pay for one, the little boy said.

The child wanted additional stones to make a marker for his grandpa’s grave. He got them, and the “adult buddy,” a senior citizen, got a big hug.

Three days after the search began, Savannah Guthrie and her two siblings sent their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-nancy-guthrie-mom-missing-88e8731270d05e6e667730d2ed8633d3">first public appeal</a>&nbsp;to the kidnappers, telling them “we want to hear from you and we are ready to listen.”

In the recorded video, Guthrie said her family was aware of media reports about a ransom letter, but they first wanted proof their mother was alive. "Please reach out to us,” they said.

Law enforcement officials declined to say whether the letters sent to several media outlets were credible but said all tips were being investigated seriously.

When Savannah Guthrie made a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-nancy-guthrie-mom-missing-88e8731270d05e6e667730d2ed8633d3">heart-wrenching plea</a>&nbsp;to the kidnapper of her 84-year-old mother to send “proof of life,” she addressed the possibility of people creating deepfakes.

“We live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated,” she said.

Before artificial intelligence tools proliferated — making it possible to realistically impersonate someone, in photos, sound and video — “proof of life” could simply mean sending a grainy image of a person who’s been abducted.

That’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/artificial-intelligence-deepfake-trump-espionage-hack-scammers-da90ad1e5298a9ce50c997458d6aa610">no longer true.</a>

“With AI these days you can make videos that appear to be very real. So we can’t just take a video and trust that that’s proof of life because of advancements in AI,” Heith Janke, the FBI chief in Phoenix, said at a news conference Thursday.

Hoaxes — whether high or low-tech — have long challenged law enforcement, especially when it comes to high-profile cases such as Nancy Guthrie’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-mother-missing-nancy-042abd04a6d87e14eecb22f0bc2893d1">disappearance last weekend</a>&nbsp;from her home in the Tucson area.

As technology has advanced, criminals have grown savvy and used it to their benefit, confusing police and the public and masking their identities. The FBI in December&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ic3.gov/PSA/2025/PSA251205" target="_blank">warned that people</a>&nbsp;posing as kidnappers can provide what appears to be a real photo or video of a loved one, along with demands for money.

Police have not said that they have received any deepfake images of Guthrie. At least three news organizations have reported receiving purported ransom notes that they have given to investigators, who said they are taking them seriously.

Investigators said they believe she’s “still out there,” but they have not identified any suspects.

Separately, a California man was charged Thursday with sending text messages to the Guthrie family seeking bitcoin after following the case on television. There’s no indication that he’s suspected of having a role in the disappearance, according to a court filing.

Savannah Guthrie appeared in an emotional video on Instagram, sitting between her sister and brother. Her voice cracked as she spoke directly to the kidnapper, saying the family is “ready to talk” and “ready to listen” but that they also want to know that their mother is alive. The brother, Camron Guthrie, posted a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-nancy-guthrie-mom-missing-2765f354b498e6146b955162c3b71d4f">similar video</a>&nbsp;on social media Thursday.

Images of Nancy Guthrie, publicly shared by family, could be used to create deepfakes, said former FBI agent Katherine Schweit.

She said ransom demands over history have evolved from phone calls and handwritten notes to email, texts and other digital tools. A century ago, ransom notes were analog. For example, when the toddler son of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped, a piece of paper demanding $50,000 was found on a windowsill.

“Investigative techniques accumulate over time,” Schweit said. “There’s never less to do as years go by; there’s more to do. Digital and forensic work is a perfect example. It just adds to the other shoe-leather work we would have done in years past. ... Nothing can be dismissed. Everything has to be run to ground.”

Schweit said directly addressing a kidnapper, like Savannah Guthrie did in her video, is a tactical move.

“The goal is to have the family or law enforcement speak directly to the victim and the perpetrator, and ask the perpetrator: What do you need? How can we solve this? Let’s move this forward,” she said.

Janke suggested to reporters that the FBI may have had some influence on Guthrie’s decision to release a video message.

“We have an expertise when it comes to kidnappings, and when families want advice, consultation, expertise, we will provide that,” he said. “But the ultimate decisions — on what they say and how they put that out — rests with the family itself.”

Demand for mom's 'proof of life' is complicated in era of AI and deepfakes

Salina Area United Way is proud to announce the opening of Year 3 of its Early Childcare Initiative Fund (ECIF) grants for the 2026–2027 grant cycle, marking an exciting new chapter in the program’s growth.

This next phase—referred to as Phase 2 of ECIF, expands grant eligibility to child care providers in Ellsworth County and, for the first time, to in-home child care providers across the region.

Since launching the Early Childcare Initiative in 2023, Salina Area United Way has worked intentionally to strengthen the local child care system while listening closely to providers and families. Over the past two years, in-home providers have consistently shared their needs, challenges, and hopes for stronger support. Phase 2 reflects a direct response to those voices and expands the initiative’s reach to better support the full early childhood ecosystem.

“We heard you,” said Christina Small, Executive Director of Salina Area United Way. “In-home providers told us they needed more support, more resources, and a partner who truly understands their role in caring for children and supporting working families. This expansion is our way of showing up for them—with funding, tools, and genuine care.”

The Early Childcare Initiative was created to address critical child care shortages while strengthening providers and improving outcomes for children, families and employers. 

· Awarded more than $550,000 to early child care providers

· Created 229 new child care slots, including 49 infant slots

· Supported seven nonprofit child care centers

· Increased wages by an average of $2 per hour for center-based child care workers

· Grown the child care endowment to nearly $1.2 million in partnership with the Greater Salina Community Foundation and Thrivent

· Reduced staffing vacancies in the child care industry to less than half of what they were at the program’s start

As part of Phase 2, Salina Area United Way is also introducing a centralized child care administration hub. This hub will serve as a one-stop support system for providers—connecting them to resources, technical assistance, community partnerships, and ongoing guidance as the early childhood system continues to grow and evolve.

“This initiative has always been about more than funding,” said Small. “It’s about relationships, trust, and walking alongside providers. We are here to support them in every way we can—professionally, practically, and personally—because when providers thrive, children and families thrive.”

The 2026–2027 ECIF grant cycle opens Friday, February 6, 2026, at noon.
