Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Quotes
October 12, 2026
OPENING STATEMENT: “So it's good to get back in the office. Today it's only coaches, there are no players today, so I don't really have an injury update for you on anything. I will tell you that (WR) Tyquan (Thornton) is most likely going on IR here, and then we'd elevate (LB) Cam Jones. We also signed (WR) Justin Watson onto the practice squad, so those are the immediate updates. Players will be back in tomorrow, more information and get together with (Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance) Rick (Burkholder) on all that. Anyway, with that, time's yours.”
Q: As you self-scouted during the bye, what areas for improvement jumped out?
REID: “Yeah, Pete (Sweeney), there's always stuff you can work on. I'm not going to get into all the details, and the obvious is the short yardage stuff that we’ve gotten stopped on. We've got to do a little better job there. There are all kinds of little things that we can get better at, for sure.”
Q: Do you anticipate (T) Josh (Simmons) and (WR) Rashee (Rice) practicing this week?
REID: “Yeah, I'll know more. They were in last week, so (T) Josh (Simmons) was here all week and doing his rehab and stuff, so we'll see. They'll be back in tomorrow and have a better idea of what's going on.”
Q: With WR Tyquan Thornton out, do you anticipate WR Xavier Worthy’s role changing?
REID: “Yeah, so (WR) Xavier (Worthy) actually had a strong game the other day, so he's going to continue to be a target, for sure. I don't know how much his role will change. He's got a big part of the pass game to start with, so I'm sure that'll continue on.”
Q: Do you feel comfortable that WR Xavier Worthy or someone else can pick up that role that WR Tyquan Thornton played in the offense?
REID: “Yeah, so I'll tell you, on that, Soren (Petro), (WR) Tyquan (Thornton), he was doing a tremendous job. It was nice to see (WR) Xavier (Worthy) get a deep one in the game also, and we know he can do all that likewise. And then the other guys, we'll just mix in. They all have good speed and ability to get down the field as needed.”
Q: Could you see a bigger workload for WR Cyrus Allen moving forward?
REID: “Yeah, I think (WR Cyrus Allen) he would probably work into the mix there a little bit more. He's a good football player, and even though he's young, he's got good ability.”
Q: When you looked at the offense overall, where do you feel like the offense is right now?
REID: “Yeah, listen, we're doing some good things. We've got a good mix going. We're scoring points there, and so those are important things as you get into it. This defense we're playing this week is a good defense. Sam (McDowell), I know what their record is and all that, but they've been in all these games here, and that defense has really done a nice job for them when you really look close at them. It's a good challenge for us.”
Q: Do you anticipate OL Kingsley Suamataia playing this week?
REID: “Yeah, (OL Kingsley Suamataia) he'll be back in.”
Q: What does the tape reveal regarding sacks and is there anything you feel like the guys need to do differently to get the quarterback on the ground?
REID: “Yeah, we've done a good job of keeping the quarterback busy back there, though, with pressure, which is important. So, hands down, we want to have sacks, but the pressure on the quarterback ends up being an important thing, and I think our guys have been generating that.”
Q: Is there anything that RB Kenneth Walker has done in the first four weeks that has surprised you in a way that maybe you couldn't have anticipated in training camp in the preseason?
REID: “Yeah, I would tell you not really because we thought (RB Kenneth Walker) he did well, especially when (Seattle Seahawks) they had to turn everything over to him during the playoffs. So, we saw his whole game there, Nate (Taylor), and now we're just seeing it on an extended basis where he comes in and he's been able to showcase all that.”
Q: Can you speak to what you guys like about bringing WR Justin Watson back in?
