SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 10p.m. May 9, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville in the 4500 block of SE 45th Street in Topeka, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 During the stop and investigation deputies found illegal narcotics and arrested the driver identified as 63-year-old Ladora S. Benaka of Topeka.

Benaka was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, transporting an open container of liquor and improper driving on a laned roadway.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas sheriff’s deputy accused of alleged domestic violence is returning to work and no charges will be filed, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Benjamin Blick.

On April 13, the Wichita Police Department arrested 31-year-od Deputy Tyler Brooks for alleged Aggravated Domestic Battery, Domestic Battery, Criminal Threat and Domestic Violence Criminal Damage to Property stemming from an incident involving an intimate partner of the deputy with whom he shares a residence.

The Wichita Police Department fully investigated this incident. The case was presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office as well as the City of Wichita Prosecutor’s Office. Both offices declined charges.&nbsp;

 Brooks returned to restricted duty pending the outcome of the internal investigation, which is being conducted by the Professional Standards Unit, according to Lt. Brooks.

While on Restricted Duty, deputies under investigation for a serious policy violation do not have contact with the public

On Tuesday, police arrested 31-year-old Tyler Brooks on requested charges of Aggravated Domestic Battery, Domestic Battery, Criminal Threat and Domestic Violence Criminal Damage to Property, according to a Lt. Benjamin Blick.&nbsp; He was booked into jail just before 2:30a.m. Wednesday, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

The requested charges stem from an incident involving an intimate partner of the deputy with whom he shares a residence.

&nbsp;Deputy Brooks has been employed by the Sheriff’s Office for 8 years.

In addition to the criminal case, the Professional Standards Unit of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an investigation.

Following the arrest, Deputy Brooks was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal and internal investigation, according to Blick. His initial bond was $25,000.

Frankie’s life began on February 16, 1931, in Lexington, KY.&nbsp; She was the daughter of Robert and Dicey (Ames) Walsh.&nbsp; Frankie was united in marriage to Robert V. Turner on July 29, 1951, in Marion.&nbsp; 

She started working around the age of 16 as a ticket taker at a movie theatre, and as a soda jerk. Frankie had many jobs throughout the years including making, packaging, and selling chili for Turner’s Chili House, a family business.&nbsp; She also worked in sewing machine factories and later she worked for AMPI from where she retired.&nbsp; 

Frankie’s best job was being a mother to her three children.&nbsp; She was an avid reader and enjoyed her book club, and a wonderful painter, creating many treasured pieces of art.&nbsp; She and Robert loved to roller skate and enjoyed their 55 years of marriage.&nbsp;

 Her loving family includes her children Sandy Sloan of Wisconsin, and Bill Turner of Lincolnville, daughter-in-law Jalene Turner of Emporia; grandchildren Terry (Michelle) Turner of McPherson, Anjolene (Andrew) Boster of WI, Adam Turner of Topeka, Matt (Brooke) Day of Idaho, Suzanne Turner of Wichita, Teaira Turner of Wichita, Billy (Tiffany) Turner of Mulvane, and Diedra (Dominique) Hill of Wichita; and 16 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; 

Frankie passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.&nbsp; She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, son Anthony “A.J.” and son-in-law Jim Sloan.&nbsp; 

Her family will gather with friends on Friday from 10-11 a.m. at the Strassburg Baptist Church where her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Frankie will be laid to rest in the Marion Cemetery following the service.&nbsp; Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion, is serving the family.&nbsp;

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged drug distribution.

Just after 6:30p.m. May 7,&nbsp; a sheriff's deputy stopped a blue Toyota pickup for a traffic infraction near the intersection of Broadway at Baker Street in Great Bend, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

 Deputies contacted the driver, identified as James B. Michael, 56 of Great Bend and asked for and received consent to search the vehicle. 

Deputies discovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. They arrested Michael at the scene without incident and transported him to the Barton County Jail. He was booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, no drug tax stamp and other charges. He is being held on a bond of $100,000, according to Bellendir.

HAYS – The first five winners of the Robert E. and Patricia A. Schmidt Foundation scholarships to attend Fort Hays State University have been announced.

The inaugural class of Schmidt Foundation Scholars is comprised of Edwin Garcia-Arreola, Lakin; Bianca Bultman, Elkhart; Makenna Bartholomew, Gypsum; Julina Wall, Ingalls; and German Hernandez, Leoti. Those incoming freshmen will receive full-ride, $14,900 scholarships for the 2021-22 school year.

Those students’ counselors, teachers, coaches, or principals made arrangements with the FHSU Foundation last week for a surprise announcement with the students via Zoom.

Preference for these scholarships are given to first-generation students from Kansas planning to&nbsp;major in healthcare, education, business, entrepreneurship, arts, or communication programs.

The Schmidt Foundation scholarship includes 30 hours of tuition and fees for fall and spring courses, books, room and board. Recipients can renew their scholarships for up to three additional years by maintaining their academic standing and continuing to meet the scholarship requirements.

The selection committee made its selections based on&nbsp;demonstrations of strong academic ability, resilience, and the leadership skills necessary to make significant contributions to the university, the community of Hays, and the state of Kansas.

“We hoped to find students who would value the mentoring opportunities included in the Schmidt Foundation Scholars program and would make the most of the future networking connections that will come,” said Jessica Albin, case manager for FHSU’s Kelly Center and chair of the selection committee. “Bianca, Edwin, German, Julina, and Makenna are exactly the type of students we hoped to connect with through this process and we fully believe they will find great success at FHSU.”&nbsp;

The Southeast of Saline Trojan track and field team made the trip to Ellinwood on Friday and posted one final record setting day ahead of next week's league meet.

The boys team kept their perfect season alive, winning the meet by a comfortable 68 points over Sterling while the girls finished in third just 17 points off the pace of the winners in Kiowa County.

On the girls side, several athletes made a return to the podium as Jentrie Alderson brought home the gold in the 800 and 1600, Ivie Douglas took silver in the discus throw, and Ashley Prochazka took second in the 3200.

Alsersons time of 5:13.7 in the 1600 was fast enough to set a new meet record, breaking Jeanene Rugans time set in 1991.

Rounding out podium places SES got third place finishes from Prochazka in the 1600, Joni Schroeder in the 3200 and Brynn Hawbaker in the long jump.

The girls team also posted a second place finish in the 4x800 meter relay.

On the boys side nine different athletes found a step of the podium, and the relay teams swept the meet, winning the 4x1, 4x2 and 4x800 meter races.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Luke Gleason, Dominic Jackson, Drake Augustine and Dylan Sprecker set a time of 8:06.30, which shattered the previous school record that had stood since 1993.

In individual events, first place finishes were earned by Eddie McVay in the 100-meter dash, Dominic Jackson in the 800, Damion Jackson in the 1600, Dylan Sprecker in the 3200, Chase Poague in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles and Jude Golden in the javelin throw.

Poague’s time of 13.96 in the 110m hurdles broke the previous record of 14.5 set by Steve Fritz in 1986.

Dylan Sprecker also broke his own school record in the 3200 with a new top time of 9:30.68

Second place finishers included Nakari Morrical-Palmer in both the 100 and 200-meter dash, Luke Gleason in the 800, Dominic Jackson in the 3200, Damion Jackson in the 3200 and Grant Stumpf in the 300m hurdles and high jump.

Rounding out the podium finishers on the boys side were third place finishes from Drake Augustine in the 800 and Stumpf in the 110m hurdles.

With the Ellinwood Invitational in the books, both SES track teams will focus on the league meet next Friday, which will be the final meet of the season before regionals.

Trojan track takes first and third at Ellinwood Invitational

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after an investigation.

On May 6, numerous police agencies conducted a search warrant in a home in the 900 block of NE Michigan Avenue in Topeka, according to Topeka Police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

Investigators recovered dozens of stolen items, guns and drugs inside the home. The recovered items had previously been reported stolen from Atchison and Jackson counties.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested Lindsey L. Wabaunsee, 34 of Topeka, and booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that include Possession of stimulant, Possession of marijuana, Criminal use of weapons, Defacing identification marks on a firearm, Use/Possess with intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body and Theft.

The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation, according to Spiker.

Weather History for Friday, May 7, 2021, from the National Weather Service in Wichita: In 1927, a huge F5 tornado nearly two miles wide raced 95 miles from extreme south-central Kansas to central Kansas. The tornado killed 10, injured 300, and caused around $1.3 million damage. Most of the approximately 100 farmsteads that were hit vanished. The twister began in extreme southeast Comanche County. The vortex quickly intensified, reaching nearly one mile wide. The tornado tore through Barber, Kingman, eastern Reno and southwest McPherson counties before lifting seven miles south-southwest of McPherson. Four fatalities occurred one mile southeast of Medicine Lodge, one was two miles west of Kingman, three were in east Hutchinson, and two were in McPherson County. Damage in east Hutchinson totaled $750,000.

In 1840, the Great Natchez, Miss., Tornado roared into the record books. The huge vortex formed just southwest of Natchez just before 1 p.m. and moved northeast along the Mississippi River. The tornado killed 317 and injured 109. It was the deadliest tornado in United States history until the Tri-State Tornado of March 18, 1925, that killed 695 and injured 2,027. It is still the second deadliest United States tornado on record. It is also the only massive tornado in United States history to have killed more people than it injured, at almost a 3 to 1 margin.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Robert E. “Bob” Watson, the son of Harlow Woodrow Watson and Merle Marie (Finch) Watson, was born January 21, 1947 in Santa Maria, CA and passed away on May 3, 2021 at Stormont-Vail Health, Topeka, KS from complications due to pneumonia at the age of 74 years, 3 months, 11 days.

Bob attended grade school in Lovewell, KS and later graduated from Mankato High School in 1965. He then attended Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS until he entered the U.S. Army.&nbsp; Bob served during the Vietnam War in Artillery until his honorable discharge. H e was a designated disabled veteran. He returned to K-State and completed his Bachelor of Science, graduating in December of 1972.

Bob then returned to Jewell County where he began farming. He was a farmer and stockman all of his life and also worked for Reinke Mfg. in Deshler, NE&nbsp;for eight and a half years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On February 17, 1973, he was united in marriage to Elaine K. Searcy and to this union three children were born, Curtis, Travis, and Hilary. The couple made their home in rural Formoso, KS.
