JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspect including a woman wanted on a felony warrant in Texas.

Just after 5:30a.m. Sunday,&nbsp;a Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Toyota passenger car for a traffic infraction near 302nd Road on U.S. 75 Highway, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The deputy discovered illegal contraband during a search of the vehicle.&nbsp;The passenger was identified as Julie Diane Klen, 38, of Brownfield, Texas.

Klen was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and for an outstanding felony warrant out of Abilene, Texas, according to Morse.

Deputies arrested the driver identified as Tracey Glenn Myers, 39, of Brownfield, Texas. arrested and booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, no proof of insurance and no vehicle registration.&nbsp;

SEDGWICK COUNTY –&nbsp;The suspect injured in the late Friday officer-involved shooting in Augusta has been moved from the hospital to jail, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Barrye W. Lightner, 49, of Augusta, was released from Wesley Medical Center on Sunday evening. He was then booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility just before 8 p.m. Lightner is being held on requested charges of aggravated domestic battery and multiple probation violations. He has not yet been charged related to the officer-involved shooting incident.

Preliminary information indicates that the Augusta Police Department received a 911 call where no report was made, but the caller did not hang up the phone. They tracked the call to the Phillips 66 at 610 W 7th&nbsp;St. in Augusta. Once an officer from Augusta Police Department arrived he made contact the subject who called 911 and learned that a man inside the convenience store had felony warrants for his arrest. The man was identified as Lightner.

The officer entered the store and attempted to make contact with Lightner, who pulled out a knife. The officer gave several commands to Lightner which were not followed. Lightner took steps toward the officer who fired once striking Lightner in his hands. Lightner then used the knife to cut his own throat. The shooting occurred at approximately 8:25 p.m. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

EMS arrived on scene and provided life-saving measures. Lightner was then transported to Wesley Medical Center.

The cell phone was traced to a convenience store in the 700 block of W. 7th Street in Augusta. When the officer arrived at the store, he learned there was a man wanted for a felony probation violation in the store. The man identified as 49-year-old Barrye Lightner&nbsp; brandished a knife and was shot by the officer. 

Lightner also suffered an intentional, self-inflicted, knife wound. He was transported to Wesley Medical Center by Butler County EMS in critical condition.&nbsp; The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is handling the investigation.&nbsp;

KBI: Kan. felon cut his throat after shot by police

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a child abduction and have made an arrest.

Around 11:30 a.m. Monday, police responded to a report of a 2-month old child being abducted when the vehicle he was in was stolen near 6th and Clay, according to Lt. Kelvin Johnson.

 The vehicle was found a short time later with child located inside and unharmed. A suspect was identified as Don Womack Jr., 47 of Topeka, and was located and taken into custody in the area of 3rd and Buchanan around 2:45 p.m.

Womack was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Robbery, Kidnapping, Aggravated Child Endangerment and Aggravated Vehicle Burglary

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a child abduction and asking the public for help to locate a suspect.

Just after 11a.m. Monday, a 2-month-old child was abducted in a stolen vehicle near SW 6th&nbsp;Avenue and SW Clay Street in Topeka, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

The child has been located and is safe. Police also located the stolen vehicle, according to Spiker.

The suspect is described as a black male and was wearing a white shirt, blue pants and white shoes at the time of the abduction.&nbsp;

Police released no additional details early Monday afternoon.

Cesar’s life began on January 8, 2004, the son of Cesar Octavio Meda and Abigail (Ramirez Martinez) Lopez-Ramirez in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was a senior at Remington High School and was attending school in Newton to be a welder. He enjoyed playing football in his early years, welding school, and hoped to work with his father someday.

His loving family includes his parents Cesar and Abigail Lopez-Ramirez; siblings Angel and Andres Lopez-Ramirez all of Whitewater; grandparents Jose de Jesus Lopez Gonzales, Elvira Meda Lopez and Santiago Ramirez-Hernandez all of Mexico. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Ludivina Martinez-Martinez.

Cesar Lopez-Ramirez passed away on Friday, August 20, 2021 at the age of 17 years old. His family will gather with friends on Tuesday, August 24, from 2-4:30 p.m. Rosary at 4:30 with Mass following at 5:30, all at Our Lady of Guadalupe, 421 S. Ash St., Newton, Kansas 67114. He enjoyed playing football in his early years, welding school, and hoped to work with his father someday.His loving family includes his parents Cesar and Abigail Lopez-Ramirez; siblings Angel and Andres Lopez-Ramirez all of Whitewater; grandparents Jose de Jesus Lopez Gonzales, Elvira Meda Lopez and Santiago Ramirez-Hernandez all of Mexico. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Ludivina Martinez-Martinez. Cesar Lopez-Ramirez passed away on Friday, August 20, 2021 at the age of 17 years old. An Ellsworth man was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested drug and firearms charges after he was stopped by a deputy early Sunday morning west of Salina.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that at approximately 12:45 a.m. Sunday, a deputy in the 4000 block of W. Crawford Street noticed a 1994 Honda Accord with a license plate that he was unable to read. The deputy stopped the car and made contact with Douglas Cooper, Jr., 40, of Ellsworth.

It was discovered that Cooper had an active warrant in Rice County, Melander said. 

Additionally, a K-9 that was brought in indicated the presence of illegal drugs, he said. During a search of the car, deputies located a semi-automatic handgun and 313 grams of methamphetamine.

Melander said Cooper was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a&nbsp;series of burglaries to a car wash in the 6100 block of SW 29th Street in Topeka have made two arrests.

On Friday, police arrested Kip L. Lehman, 49, and Sonny J. Blanton, 52, both of Topeka and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections, according to Police Lt. Shane Hilton.

&nbsp;Lehman is being held on requested charges that include counts 7 of Burglary and 7 counts of Theft.&nbsp;Blanton remains jailed on requested charges that include 5 counts of Burglary and 5 counts of Theft.

She grew up in the Solomon area and graduated from Solomon High School in 2017. She worked as a customer service representative for a financial institution. 

Kristen is survived by her father Mike Teeters (Darci); mother Brenda (Lynn) Teeters; sister Lindsey Teeters; two step-sisters Marissa Scheele and Brittany Scheele; paternal grandparents Max and Bev Teeters; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. 

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Jerry and Roberta Nelson. 

Funeral services for Kristen will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at New Trail Fellowship Church in Abilene with Pastor Stan Norman Officiating. Burial will follow at Prairiedale Cemetery in Talmage. Friends may come by Danner Funeral Home anytime after 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2021 to sign the visitation book.

United Airlines’ flights operated by SkyWest Airlines at the Salina Regional Airport have set new records for passenger enplanements.

 Flights to Denver, Chicago and beyond are at capacity on the 50-seat regional jets that serve Salina. During July 2021 a record 4,642 total passengers traveled to and from Salina on United flights. July 2021 passenger activity exceeded Salina Airport passenger numbers for both 2020 and 2019.

In response to the dramatic increase in passengers, the Salina Airport Authority board of directors approved a $675,000 project to expand and improve passenger seating at the M.J. Kennedy Air Terminal. The concourse improvements will add seating for up to 125 passengers. The project will also improve access and use of the TSA’s passenger screening checkpoint. A second phase of construction will include new concourse restrooms.

“Numbers are off the charts,” said Gary Foss, managing partner of the ArkStar Group, the Salina Airport Authority’s air service consultant.

“Things are a lot better than they were last year at this time,” he said.

July 2021 total passengers (4,642) were up 509% versus July 2020, Foss reported. July 2021 total passenger count was up 14% compared to July 2019.

United nonstop flights to Denver and Chicago are running at close to 75% capacity, Rogers said, including a record 79% load-factor in the fourth week of July.

Luci Larson is relishing these times as co-owner of Action Travel, 116 S. Seventh Street. 

“It’s like someone flipped a switch back in March and it’s been a gold rush,” Larson said. “Floodgates opened, and we’ve not slowed down since.”

Larson was early in her travel agent career during the previous flight bonanza more than four decades ago, but those times don’t compare with today.

“I can’t remember demand being as high as it is right now,” she said.

In many cases, Salina is winning on fares.

“Anytime anyone calls us, they right away want to know what the rates are out of Wichita and Kansas City. They assume that’s where they’ll find the bargain basement rates,” Larson said. “I tell my customers, ‘Hang on just a minute,’ and one out of three times, Salina has beaten them. There have been a few times where it’s been a little higher, but it is so worth it not having to drive somewhere.”.

She has also reported booking a number of international, transatlantic trips.

“The flights match up great in and out of Salina” Larson said. “On some of the maps we use, we have a star. We are no longer a little dot. Nobody asks me anymore what the code is for Salina. They recognize SLN.

“It’s a win-win all the way,” she said. “I’m happy, but oh my gosh, have we been busy.”

Today in History - Aug. 22

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on assault charges after a standoff.

Just before noon Thursday, police were dispatched to 1001 E MacArthur for a call of a disturbance with a weapon, according to Officer Trevor Macy. 

Victims had called 911 to report that their neighbor, identified as 50-year-old Kerry Ordway, pointed a gun at them and fired a shot during a disturbance. When officers arrived, they attempted to contact the Ordway but met him armed with a firearm and refusing to drop the gun or cooperate. 

The suspect went back into his home and refused to come out.

Negotiators were called to the scene and the WPD Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) for safety. Negotiators spent hours trying to communicate with Ordway and get him to leave the home. 

Eventually, the suspect came to the door, and police used less lethal weapons, as well as a K9, to take him into custody.

EMS transported Ordway to an area hospital to treat minor injuries caused by less lethal weapons and the K9. After being released from the hospital, he was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail for one count of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, according to Macy.

Kan. man hospitalized after encounter with K9 officer

PHILLIPS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating three out-of-state suspects after a traffic stop led to the discovery of a large quantity of marijuana in Phillips County, according to a social media report from the sheriff's office.

Just before 9:30 a.m., Saturday, deputies were dispatched to assist a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper on Highway 383 near West 1300 Road.

A trooper had stopped an out-of-state vehicle for speeding and discovered a large quantity of marijuana in the vehicle. While taking one of the subjects into custody, the subject resisted arrest and fled into an adjacent cornfield.  The other two subjects were taken into custody without incident.

State troopers from all over northwest Kansas responded including the KHP aircraft.  Phillips County deputies, K9 Fritz and a drone were deployed searching for the subject who fled.

At approximately 10:50 a.m. the suspect was located in a creek near West 1300 and Granite Road and was taken into custody without further incident, according to the department.

All three suspects including 37-year-old&nbsp; Jesus Javier Llanna-Rodriguez 20-year-old Eduardo Vasquezperez and 21-year-old Andely-Salvador Oliva Zamora, according to online booking records, were transported to the Phillips County Jail on requested charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and no drug tax stamp. The suspect who fled faces additional charges of interference of a law enforcement officer and battery of a law enforcement officer.

The suspect who fled faces additional charges of interference of a law enforcement officer and battery of a law enforcement officer.

Dennis was disabled from a car accident when he was 17 years old. He worked for the railroad and also put together boxes for a clothing store in Herington. He loved his family and enjoyed cars. His loving family includes his mother Connie Mascareno of Manhattan; brother Tim Mascareno and his fiancé Wendy Collier of Auburn, Nebraska; sister Diana Mascareno of Council Grove, Kansas; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Sandy in 2000 and an infant brother Michael. Dennis passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at the age of 66 years old. Rosary and funeral service will be held Monday, August 23 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Merlin Kieffer officiating at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home in Herington. Interment will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington.

Charlene Francis Guillot passed away peacefully, into her Savior’s loving arms on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at the age of 86. Mrs. Guillot was born on February 25, 1935 the daughter of Charles and Juanita Kay (Morris) Brown. She grew up in Herington, Kansas and married Jesse John Guillot on February 27, 1952 in Abilene, Kansas. They were married for 62 years.

Charlene was devoted to her children, grandchildren and family. She was a homemaker and was later employed by Tony’s Pizza Service until her retirement in 1999. She enjoyed family gatherings and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was famous in the circle of family and friends for her peach cobbler and sweet potato pies. She also loved her collection of ceramic birds and people watching. She was preceded in death by her 25-month old daughter Kathy in 1953, her parents and her husband Jesse in 2014.

Her loving family includes her son, David Guillot (Rachel) of Salina, Kansas; daughters, Vickie Guillot and Olivia Price (Keith) all of Salina, Kansas, DeeAnn Spencer (Charles) of Kansas City, Missouri; brothers, Charles Brown (Diane) of Los Angeles, California, Carl Brown (Delores) and Dennis Brown (Dariel), Curtis Brown, all of Seattle, Washington; sisters, Juanita Rodriquez of Los Angeles, California, Patricia Crenshaw of Atlanta, Georgia, Vernessa Alexander of Seattle, Washington; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Charlene Francis Guillot

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tom T. Hall, the singer-songwriter who composed “Harper Valley P.T.A.” and sang about life’s simple joys as country music’s consummate blue collar bard, has died. He was 85.

His son, Dean Hall, confirmed the musician's death on Friday at his home in Franklin, Tennessee. Known as “The Storyteller” for his unadorned yet incisive lyrics, Hall composed hundreds of songs.

Along with such contemporaries as Kris Kristofferson, John Hartford and Mickey Newbury, Hall helped usher in a literary era of country music in the early ’70s, with songs that were political, like “Watergate Blues” and “The Monkey That Became President,” deeply personal like “The Year Clayton Delaney Died,” and philosophical like “(Old Dogs, Children and) Watermelon Wine.”

Hall, the fourth son of an ordained minister, was born near Olive Hill, Kentucky, in a log cabin built by his grandfather. He started playing guitar at age 4 and wrote his first song by the time he was 9.

Hall began playing in a bluegrass band, but when that didn’t work out he started working as a disc jockey in Morehead, Kentucky. He joined the U.S. Army in 1957 for four years including an assignment in Germany. He turned to writing when he got back stateside and was discovered by Nashville publisher Jimmy Key.

Hall settled in Nashville in 1964 and first established himself as a songwriter making $50 a week. He wrote songs for Jimmy C. Newman, Dave Dudley and Johnny Wright, but he had so many songs that he began recording them himself. The middle initial “T” was added when he got his recording contract to make the name catchier.

His breakthrough was writing “Harper Valley P.T.A.,” a 1968 international hit about small-town hypocrisy recorded by Jeannie C. Riley. The song about a mother telling a group of busybodies to mind their own business was witty and feisty and became a No. 1 country and pop hit. It sold millions of copies and Riley won a Grammy for best female country vocal performance and an award for single of the year from the Country Music Association. The story was so popular it even spawned a movie of the same name and a television series.

“Suddenly, it was the talk of the country,” Hall told The Associated Press in 1986. “It became a catch phrase. You’d flip the radio dial and hear it four or five times in 10 minutes. It was the most awesome time of my life; I caused all this stir.”

His own career took off after that song and he had a string of hits with “Ballad of Forty Dollars” (which also was recorded by Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings); his first career No. 1 hit “A Week in a Country Jail,” and “Homecoming,” in the late 1960s.

Throughout the ’70s, Hall became one of Nashville’s biggest singer-songwriters, with multiple hit songs including, “I Love,” “Country Is,” “I Care,” “I Like Beer,” and “Faster Horses (The Cowboy and The Poet.)” He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1978.

Hall’s masterworks vary in plot, tone and tempo, but they are bound by his ceaseless and unyielding empathy for the triumphs and losses of others,” said Kyle Young, CEO, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, in a statement. “He wrote without judgment or anger, offering a rhyming journalism of the heart that sets his compositions apart from any other writer.

He also penned songs for children on his records “Songs of Fox Hollow (for Children of All Ages)” in 1974 and “Country Songs for Kids,” in 1988. He also became an author, writing a book about songwriting, “The Songwriter’s Handbook,” and an autobiography, “The Storyteller’s Nashville,” as well as fiction novels.

He was host of the syndicated TV show “Pop Goes the Country” from 1980 to 1983 and even dabbled in politics. Hall was close to former President Jimmy Carter and Carter’s brother, Billy, when Carter was in the White House. Tennessee Democrats urged Hall to run for governor in 1982, but he declined.

For his 1985 album “Songs in a Seashell,” he spent six months walking up and down Southern beaches to get inspiration for the summer mood of the LP.

He was inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008 and in 2012, he was honored as the BMI Icon of the year, with artists such as the Avett Brothers, bluegrass stars Daily &amp; Vincent, Toby Keith and Justin Townes Earle paying tribute to the songwriting legend.

“I think a song is just a song,” Hall said at the ceremony in 2012. “They can do it with all kinds of different bands. It’s just a lyric and a melody. I was talking to Kris Kristofferson one time. They asked him what was country, and he said, ‘If it sounds country, it’s country.’ So that’s my philosophy.”

He married English-born songwriter Dixie Deen in 1968, and the two would go on to write hundreds of bluegrass songs after Hall retired from performing in the 1990s, including “All That’s Left” which Miranda Lambert covered on her 2014 album, “Platinum.” Dixie Hall died in 2015.

He called Hall’s song, “I Love,” “a little overcooked,” and said that the arrival of Kristofferson in Nashville “blew ol’ Tom T. Hall’s world apart.”The criticism apparently confused Hall, as he considered Kristofferson a friend and a peer, and when asked about Dylan’s comments in an 2016 article for “American Songwriter” magazine, he responded, “What the hell was all that about?”
