SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged attempted murder.

Just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the 2900 block of SE Illinois in Topeka on a report of an aggravated burglary, according to Lt. Kelvin Johnson.

The suspect later identified as 37-year-old Anthony Kincaide had forced his way into the residence and made threats to the occupants. 

When the Kincaide left, the door got stuck closed due to the damage from the initially entry and temporarily trapped the residents inside. 

Kincaide started a fire inside the residence and the residents were able to relay this information to 911 dispatch. Topeka Police and Topeka Fire both responded and the fire was quickly extinguished. The residents were able to get out of the house without injury and minimal damage from the fire.

Police located Kincaide, took him into custody and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of requested&nbsp;charges Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Arson, Battery and Criminal Damage.

A Memorial Service for Paula S. (Bruning) Keffeler will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Reverend Sylvia High Karlsson officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Paula Sue Keffeler, 52 years of age, of Holdrege, died on Sunday, August 8, 2021, at the Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, Nebraska following a courageous battle with cancer. Paula was born on February 11, 1969, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, the fourth of five children, born to Dalbert and Karen (Bolte) Bruning. She received her education from Herndon, Kansas Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1987. Paula was active in high school with Cheerleading and Dance. Paula then pursued higher education from McCook Community College with an Associates of Science. She then went on to receive a degree in Radiologic Technology from Fort Hayes State University in Hays, Kansas.

On August 26, 1995, Paula was united in marriage to Bryan Keffeler at the Immanuel United Christian Church in Herndon. To this union, they were blessed with two children: Katelyn and Brayden. The family made their home in Holdrege, where Paula was employed at Phelps Memorial Hospital as a Radiologic Technologist, Sonographer, and Mammographer, for 28 years. On August 26, 2020, Paula and Bryan celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary.

Paula enjoyed singing, crafting, gardening, dancing, and spending time with her friends and family. Together, the family loved to craft and enjoyed their vacations to the beach. Above all, Paula loved being a mom. She has left a tremendous legacy of love to her husband, children, family, and friends.

She was a member of Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church in Holdrege, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, and the Nebraska Society of Radiologic Technologists.

Paula was preceded in death by her parents, Dalbert and Karen (Bolte) Bruning.

Paula leaves to mourn her passing; her husband, Bryan Keffeler of Holdrege; her children: Katelyn and Brayden Keffeler of Holdrege; her siblings: Donna Weeks and her husband, Rick of Cawker City, Kansas; Kim Dempewolf and her husband, Steve of Colby, Kansas; Roy Bruning and his wife, Teresa of Atwood, Kansas; and Kristin Grafel and her husband, Kurt of Natoma, Kansas; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jake and Phyllis Keffeler of Sturgis, South Dakota; two brothers-in-law: Troy Keffeler and his wife, Christi; and Kurt Keffeler and his wife, Kamette all of Sturgis; along with a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial book signing will be held on Friday, August 20, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in Paula’s honor, and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.

MENTOR - An Assaria teen was arrested after a pickup he was driving went off the road and into a drainage ditch early Saturday morning.

Camden Spano-Lund, 18, of Assaria, was westbound in the 2500 block of E. Mentor Road in a 2000 Chevrolet 1500 pickup when he failed to navigate a curve, went across a field, and dropped into a drainage ditch, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. The pickup came to rest on its tires in four feet of water.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Spano-Lund was able to get out of the pickup and walked toward a residence near Mentor. A person there called 911.

Spano-Lund was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center with non-life-threatening injuries, Melander said. After treatment, Spano-Lund was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, Melander said.

●Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

●Possession of liquor by an underaged person

Melander said that the Salina Fire Department rescue team also responded and was able to successfully rescue a cat that was in the pickup.

Jeannine Wedell Shadwick, of Greeley, Colorado, died peacefully on August 8, 2021 at the age of 90. Jeannine was born July 19, 1931 to Elmer and Gladys Wedell in Lincoln, Nebraska. She graduated from Great Bend, Kansas High School, attended Lindenwood University, and graduated from Kansas State University in 1953 with a BS in Education. She moved to Salina, Kansas and taught in the junior high.

Jeannine was committed to serving in the community and was prominent in women's organizations including PEO Chapter BE, Questers antiques study group, and WTK, a women’s study group founded in 1890. She was founder of the Greeley Pi Beta Phi Alumni club, co-chair of a UNC College of Preforming Arts Fund Drive, and co-chair of the successful drive to acquire the “Promise of the Prairie” sculpture for Lincoln Park. She served on the Hospice and Palliative Care Board of Northern Colorado, Inc. and the Board of the NCMC Hospital Foundation. Jeannine worked in the Greeley United Way and she was a consultant at the Greeley National Bank Women's program. She was Vice President of the Philharmonic Guild and served as chair and co-chair of the Philharmonic Guild Christmas Festival of Trees.

Her Christian faith was important to her as a member of the Rolling Hills United Church of Christ in Salina, Kansas where she served as Moderator and was chair of the Rolling Hills Art Fair for 10 years. She worked to develop the community arts program in Salina and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Lester Raymer Artist Society in Lindsborg, Kansas. As an active member of the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Greeley, Colorado, she was co-chair of its 125th anniversary celebration and served on several church committees. Jeannine was a true committed Kansas State Wildcat as a member of the Board of Directors of the Kansas State Alumni Association and Trustee of the Kansas State Foundation.

Out of a need to help provide appropriate clothing for low income and disadvantaged women to prepare them for entry into the job market, she was co-founder and chair for 10 years of Leanna's Closet. She recruited and trained volunteers, solicited donations of clothing suitable for the workplace, and negotiated space and utilities to be donated. Because of her contributions to the community, she was named Woman of the Year in 2005 by A Woman's Place, Inc. A highlight in her life was being named to the National Board of Directors for the Swedish Council of America. She loved serving her Swedish heritage.

As a world traveler, especially in Europe, Jeannine enjoyed learning and exploring other countries with Shad. Jeannine loved being surrounded by her friends and especially loved her time with her Mahjong group, as well as the women in the PEO book club she started. Above all, what was most important in her life was her family.

Jeannine is survived by her husband Gerald “Shad” Shadwick of 67 years; her children Jeff Shadwick of Houston, Monte (Jannell) Shadwick of Salina, Kansas, Jay (Dianne) Shadwick of Overland Park, Kansas and Nancy (David) Lovell, of Kirkwood, Missouri; grandchildren Mary, Madeline, Sam, Graham, Grayson, Ben (Kasey), Will (Marisa), Tom, Blake, Reagan, Hannah and Anne; and great-grandchild Emmett.

She was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Gladys Wedell.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church of Greeley, or PEO Chapter BE , or the Greeley Philharmonic.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 21, 2021 at First Congregational Church of Greeley. Inurnment at First Congregational Church will follow the service.

She moved to Salina, Kansas and taught in the junior high.Jeannine was committed to serving in the community and was prominent in women's organizations including PEO Chapter BE, Questers antiques study group, and WTK, a women’s study group founded in 1890. She was founder of the Greeley Pi Beta Phi Alumni club, co-chair of a UNC College of Preforming Arts Fund Drive, and co-chair of the successful drive to acquire the “Promise of the Prairie” sculpture for Lincoln Park. She served on the Hospice and Palliative Care Board of Northern Colorado, Inc. and the Board of the NCMC Hospital Foundation. Jeannine worked in the Greeley United Way and she was a consultant at the Greeley National Bank Women's program. She was Vice President of the Philharmonic Guild and served as chair and co-chair of the Philharmonic Guild Christmas Festival of Trees.Her Christian faith was important to her as a member of the Rolling Hills United Church of Christ in Salina, Kansas where she served as Moderator and was chair of the Rolling Hills Art Fair for 10 years. She worked to develop the community arts program in Salina and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Lester Raymer Artist Society in Lindsborg, Kansas. As an active member of the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Greeley, Colorado, she was co-chair of its 125th anniversary celebration and served on several church committees. Jeannine was a true committed Kansas State Wildcat as a member of the Board of Directors of the Kansas State Alumni Association and Trustee of the Kansas State Foundation.Out of a need to help provide appropriate clothing for low income and disadvantaged women to prepare them for entry into the job market, she was co-founder and chair for 10 years of Leanna's Closet. She recruited and trained volunteers, solicited donations of clothing suitable for the workplace, and negotiated space and utilities to be donated. Because of her contributions to the community, she was named Woman of the Year in 2005 by A Woman's Place, Inc. A highlight in her life was being named to the National Board of Directors for the Swedish Council of America. She loved serving her Swedish heritage.As a world traveler, especially in Europe, Jeannine enjoyed learning and exploring other countries with Shad. Jeannine loved being surrounded by her friends and especially loved her time with her Mahjong group, as well as the women in the PEO book club she started. The 2022 budget includes a $60,000,000 expenditure budgeted for the Former Schilling Air Force Base Clean Up Fund, $6,000,000 in additional transfers from the Sales Tax Capital Fund to create capital reserve funds and a reserve expenditure for the General Fund of $10 million," information from the city noted. "Excluding these exceptions, the overall 2022 budget is less than 1% higher than the adopted 2021 budget."

The final proposed 2022 budget, if approved, would set the mill levy at 30.452 mills.

A representative of BKD CPAs &amp; Advisors is scheduled to present the findings of the firm's forensics audit of Salina Fire Department leave time. The audit found that some fire department personnel took time off without applying it to their vacation time, which is valued at more than $198,000. Additionally, the audit found $18,000 worth of personal or sick time that was not reported.

Commissioners also are scheduled to consider a verified petition seeking to limit the commission's ability to enact ordinances that impose restrictions on businesses or citizens in response to public emergencies. The petition was delivered to the city clerk on July 28.

Commissioners also are scheduled to consider a proposed ordinance to annex the former Signify plant site on S. Ninth Street. On Aug. 6, 2020, the city commission adopted a resolution preliminarily indicating the city's intent to issue $20 million in industrial revenue bonds for what was later announced as Great Plains Manufacturing's expansion into the site, with the understanding that the plant site would be annexed into the city upon Great Plains taking ownership.

●Vance and Louise Ehmke of Healy.&nbsp;The Ehmkes remain profitable while conserving soil and water, by experimenting with crops like triticale. This cross between wheat and rye is popular as cattle feed and produces enough crop residue to protect fields from soil erosion. With more than 50 playas on their land, the Ehmkes are involved in research, education and outreach on playas’ contribution to recharging the Ogallala aquifer. They also have hundreds of acres for migratory bird and pollinator habitat.

●Ray and Susan Flickner of Wichita.&nbsp;The Flickner family farms in McPherson, Hodgeman, Dickinson and Norton counties. They installed sub-surface drip irrigation technology to become more efficient with water and nutrient applications on crops. They experiment with cover crops to improve water infiltration and suppress weeds. Their Flickner Innovation Farm is a collaboration of more than a dozen university, industry and agency partners where new methods to improve soil health and conserve water are demonstrated.

●Dwane Roth of Manhattan.&nbsp;Roth owns Big D Farms in Finney County. He uses cover crops to build soil health and combat wind erosion on sandy soils. As one of Kansas’ first Water Technology Farmers, he is passionate about addressing declining water levels and extending the life of the Ogallala aquifer. His participation involves researching and testing new irrigation strategies and technologies that maintain crop production while reducing water usage.

●Glenn and Barbara Walker of Brookville.&nbsp;The Walkers are improving soil health, wildlife habitat and water distribution on their properties in Ellsworth, Lincoln, Rice, Russell and Saline counties. By using rotational grazing to feed their beef cattle, they are also managing grassland to improve habitat for greater prairie chickens, turkeys and deer. Their investment in removing invasive red cedar trees improves water resources. Several of their properties are enrolled in the Kansas Walk-in Hunting program. &nbsp;

The Kansas Leopold Conservation Award will be presented at the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts’ 77th&nbsp;Annual Convention in Wichita in November. The award recipient will receive $10,000 and a crystal award.

This cross between wheat and rye is popular as cattle feed and produces enough crop residue to protect fields from soil erosion. With more than 50 playas on their land, the Ehmkes are involved in research, education and outreach on playas’ contribution to recharging the Ogallala aquifer. They also have hundreds of acres for migratory bird and pollinator habitat.●Ray and Susan Flickner of Wichita.&nbsp;The Flickner family farms in McPherson, Hodgeman, Dickinson and Norton counties. They installed sub-surface drip irrigation technology to become more efficient with water and nutrient applications on crops. They experiment with cover crops to improve water infiltration and suppress weeds. Their Flickner Innovation Farm is a collaboration of more than a dozen university, industry and agency partners where new methods to improve soil health and conserve water are demonstrated.●Dwane Roth of Manhattan.&nbsp;Roth owns Big D Farms in Finney County. He uses cover crops to build soil health and combat wind erosion on sandy soils. As one of Kansas’ first Water Technology Farmers, he is passionate about addressing declining water levels and extending the life of the Ogallala aquifer. His participation involves researching and testing new irrigation strategies and technologies that maintain crop production while reducing water usage.●Glenn and Barbara Walker of Brookville.&nbsp;The Walkers are improving soil health, wildlife habitat and water distribution on their properties in Ellsworth, Lincoln, Rice, Russell and Saline counties. By using rotational grazing to feed their beef cattle, they are also managing grassland to improve habitat for greater prairie chickens, turkeys and deer. Their investment in removing invasive red cedar trees improves water resources. Brookville's Walkers finalists for '21 Kansas Leopold Conservation Award

In 1057, Macbeth, King of Scots, was killed in battle by Malcolm, the eldest son of King Duncan, whom Macbeth had slain. 

In 1914, the Panama Canal officially opened as the SS Ancon crossed the just-completed waterway between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

In 1935, humorist Will Rogers and aviator Wiley Post were killed when their airplane crashed near Point Barrow in the Alaska Territory.

In 1939, the MGM musical "The Wizard of Oz" opened at the Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

February 2, 1943 ~ July 21, 2021 (age 78)

Joan passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on February 2, 1943, in Herington, Kansas. She was the daughter of Bud and Edna Iiams. Joan graduated from Herington High School in 1961, Emporia State University in 1965, and received her master's degree from Kansas State University.

Joan taught for 36 years at Washington Elementary School in Junction City. She taught 2nd and 3rd grades as well as a 3rd-4th combo. She was a John’s Hopkins Trainer for Success for All Reading Program for her school.

Joan had many hobbies including sewing for herself, family, and friends, made many gorgeous quilts, enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, loved traveling - toured all 50 states and collected souvenir shot glasses from every state, vacationed in many foreign countries, and created beautiful memory photo albums -&nbsp; enjoyed gourmet cooking, and was a true animal lover of dogs, cats, and horses. When she was younger, she owned several horses and enjoyed horseback riding. She was a member of KNEA her entire teaching career, also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Joan is survived by her son Jeff Turner, (Jodi), grandchildren Grant, Rachel, and Tara; her son Jamie Dodd; Archie Moore was her wonderful companion for 23 years. He helped her and stayed by her side; her sister Judy Domke, (Kerry), her nephew Ethan Domke, (Mindy), Dylan and Clara, her nephew Nicolas Domke (Sarah), Josephine and Sofia; and many dear friends and family members.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 14, at 10:00 a.m. in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Herington. The date has been changed due to Covid-19.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman convicted in the methadone death of her 2-year-old son arrived in court for sentencing Thursday morning. Kimberly Compass, 25, asked the court for a new attorney and Judge Kevin O’Connor granted that request, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In May, a jury convicted Compass of first-degree felony murder after her 2-year-old son died from ingesting methadone. A Sedgwick County jury deliberated about two hours Monday before finding her guilty in the death of Zayden Jay Nesahkluah. 

Zayden died of a methadone overdose in a Wichita motel on May 31, 2019. Prosecutors accused Compass of mishandling three bottles of methadone, which had been prescribed to help her kick a heroin habit. It remains unclear exactly how the boy got ahold of the methadone. 

Her defense attorney argued throughout the trial that Compass didn't know the boy ingested the drug.&nbsp;

The judge has not chosen the new defense attorney and has set no date for her next appearance in court, according to the district attorney's office.
