In addition to his duties as head coach at Ave Maria, Kelly would serve as the Sun Conference softball "rater", an elected position by his fellow conference coaches that was responsible for bi-weekly conference ratings and NAIA National Coaches Poll voting. During his career with the Mavericks, Smejkal started 150 games and collected 137 total hits including 31 doubles, six triples, and 14 home runs while driving in 92 runs. Cloud County athletics announces staff additions for 5 sports

Elizabeth L. “Betty” (Weigel) Denning, age 73, former Victoria, Kansas, resident died Thursday, August 19, 2021, at Diversicare of Council Grove, Kansas.

She was born November 11, 1947, in Hays, Kansas to Alfred G. and Mary Anna (Hammerschmidt) Weigel.&nbsp; She married Dennis L. Denning on October 15, 1977 at Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on August 9, 2014.

Betty was a bookkeeper for over 40 years.&nbsp; She worked at Home Lumber Company, Kansas Producers Gas Company, and Wasinger Brothers Plumbing-Heating &amp; Air all of Hays.&nbsp; She grew up in Victoria, and was a 1965 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp; She was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis and&nbsp; Christian Mothers both of Victoria.&nbsp; She volunteered a lot in the church, the community, Girl Scouts and served on the Ellis County Council Cancer.

Survivors include her daughter, Alicia Kelley and husband, Michael, Council Grove; three grandchildren, Ava, Owen and Everly Kelley; four sisters, Theresa Klaus and Agnes Weigel, both of Hays, KS; Twila Weigel, Victoria, KS; Stella Weigel, Salina, KS; one brother-in-law, Morris Denning and wife, Janet, Hays, KS; one sister-in-law, Dianne Ream, Hays, KS;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; her son, Justin Denning; one brother, Thomas Weigel; two sisters, Kathleen Weigel and Norma Weigel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at The&nbsp; Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp;

A vigil service will be at 6:15 P.M. Monday, followed by a St. Fidelis Christian Mothers rosary at 6:30 P.M. Monday, both at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, 412 Main Street, Victoria, Kansas 67671.

Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, and from 9:00 to 9:45 A.M. Tuesday, all at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, Victoria, Kansas.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a man and woman for the abuse of two young children.

On Monday, a Topeka area hospital notified the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office of the alleged abuse of a five-year-old girl, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

During the investigation, it was discovered that two siblings, a five-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy had both sustained serious injuries during the events. 

Both children were placed into police protective custody. Deputies arrested 28-year-old Ryan D. Wayman and 25-year-old Ellen R. Wayman booked them into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Ryan Wayman has been charged with the felony crimes of abuse of a child; torture or cruel beating a child and aggravated battery, according to the sheriff's office. Ellen Wayman has been charged with the felony crime of aggravated endangering a child.

Jolie Sue McDaniel, age 41, of Lyons, KS, left this earthly life on Monday, August 16, 2021 at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita, KS.&nbsp; She was born on April 16, 1980 in Emporia, KS to Clayton R. &amp; Amy S. (Bare) McIlvain.

Jolie graduated from Madison High School in 1998.&nbsp; She then graduated from Emporia State University with a bachelor's degree in business administration.&nbsp; She married Adam McDaniel on December 29, 2001 at the Madison United Methodist Church, Madison, KS.

Her first job was as a soda jerk for the Pope Drug Store in Madison, KS.&nbsp; Jolie’s most loved job was helping to start the Highland Community College Western Center in Baileyville, KS.&nbsp; She has also served as the executive director of United Way in Dodge City; board clerk for Rural Vista USD 481; registrar for Salina Area Technical College; director for the Conservation District for Rawlins County; a secretary for Minneola High School; At-Risk Coordinator for USD 218 and most recently, a high school business teacher for USD 405.&nbsp; 

She was a member of the United Methodist Church throughout her life.&nbsp;

 But her most important role and achievement was becoming a mother when she and Adam adopted Tavin Lu in June 2011.&nbsp; She yearned to be a mother, and had a special twinkle in her eye when she talked about Tavin in everything that she did.&nbsp; She always wanted to take care of her boys.

She is survived by her husband, Adam and son, Tavin, Lyons, KS; parents Clayton and Amy McIlvain, Madison, KS; sister Jacque Wellnitz, Olpe, KS; grandmother Wilma Bare, Topeka, KS; three nieces and two nephews as well as a host of family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Lawrence and Marjorie McIlvain, great-grandmother Vera McIlvain; grandfather Donald Bare and aunt Grace Ann McIlvain.

BARTON—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas teen on drug charges.

Just before 8p.m. Tuesday, an officer with the Great Bend Police Department made a traffic stop on a 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo in the 1900 block of Odell in Great Bend for a traffic violation, according to a media release.

Braden Holley, age 18, was arrested and booked at the Barton County Detention Center in lieu of a $300,000 bond.

Just before 8:30a.m. Wednesday, police responded to report of a stabbing in the parking lot of Dillons, 1015 West 23rd Street in Lawrence, according to police spokesman Patrick Compton.

When officers arrived they encountered a suspect still holding a knife. Officers spoke to the suspect and convinced him to drop the weapon.

First responders also located a Brooks. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to Compton.

Authorities arrested 54-year-old Robert Earl Davis of Lawrence and booked him on requested charges of second-degree murder and cruelty to animals after victim’s dog was also injured during the incident. Animal Control officers transported the dog to the Lawrence Humane Society. The dog was stabilized and subsequently transported to a local animal hospital.

The Humane Society said in a social media post Thursday&nbsp; that the dog, named Bear, sustained a stab wound to his side. The dog initially was in shock, but his wound had been repaired and his prognosis is good.&nbsp;

Police ID Kan. man who died after he and dog were stabbed

A Salina man was arrested in Concordia after an alleged incident with a family member west of Salina.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that a 51-year-old female was driving a 2012 Ford Focus in the 4400 block of State Street when a passenger in the car, Joseph Tholstrup, 31, of Salina, began to argue with her. The incident occurred at approximately noon on Wednesday.

During the argument, Tholstrup began asking for family members addresses. He allegedly held a knife to the woman's throat and then kicked her out of the car, Melander said. A witness saw the incident and called 911, he added.

By the time deputies got to the scene, Tholstrup and the car were gone. Deputies were told that Tholstrup had said he was going to kill family members, Melander said. He was believed to be on his way to Concordia.

The Concordia Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol assisted in the search for Tholstrup and located him in Concordia, Melander said. The car also was located there.

Tholstrup was brought back to Salina and booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, Melander said.

Melander said the woman was not injured in the incident.

Suspect killed Kan. man, stabbed dog  in store parking lot

EMPORIA —Law enforcement authorities made 5 arrests Wednesday in connection with the September 2017 murder of 19-year-old Jesus Avila-Galvin of Emporia.

On Sept. 6, 2017, Lyon County deputies responded to investigate a suspicious vehicle on a road about five miles east of Emporia. The deputies found the car on fire, with the body of Avila-Galvin Jr. inside, according to a media release from the Lyon County Sheriff.

The Kansas and Oklahoma Highway Patrol assisted with Wednesday's arrests that were made in Tulsa, Oklahoma and various locations in Emporia, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Andrew John “AJ” Granado, 21, of Tulsa, Oklahoma was booked into the David L. Moss Criminal Justice Center in Tulsa County, Oklahoma and is being held without bond.

Four other suspects including Jordy Cornejo-Campoverde, 21; Armando Nunez, 20; Alan Alanis, 19, and Jovan Pecina, 22, all of Emporia were arrested throughout Wednesday morning, according to the KBI.

&nbsp;Cornejo-Campoverde, Nunez, Alanis, and Pecina were booked into the Lyon County Jail.

All five suspects are being held on requested charges of murder in the first-degree, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery, arson, and interference with a law enforcement officer.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man will be sentenced in November after being convicted of beating a friend to death with his bare hands. 

Steven Speakman, 37, Wichita, was convicted earlier this month of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 33-year-old Haley Collins, of Bel Aire. Investigators say Speakman and Collins got into an argument that turned physical in the parking lot of a Dillon's store on Aug. 21, 2019. 

An affidavit says Collins had refused to give Speakman a ride home. Dillon's employees who witnessed the fight said Speakman punched Collins, jumped on top of him and hit him several more times. Speakman, who was convicted on Aug. 6, is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 1.

She worked for the Remington School District as a para-professional in 1987 and later became the secretary to the high school principal until retiring in 1994. She loved her family, and enjoyed her flowers, quilting, puzzles and mowing her yard. She was a member of the Remington Historical Society. Her loving family includes her daughter Kathy Hoch and her husband, Mark of Potwin, Kansas; grandson Matthew Hoch and his wife, Tara of Benton; great-grandchildren Dakota, Cheyenne and Aspen Hoch; granddaughter Amy Vanderford and her husband Chris of Potwin, great-grandchildren Lane, Cole and Paisley Vanderford; son Richard Glass and his wife, Renee of Cherryvale, Kansas; granddaughter LeAnne Myhill and husband David of Monroe, Washington; great-grandchildren Noah and Sophia Myhill; grandson Brandon Losh of Cherryvale; granddaughter Holly Losh and fiancé Corey Sanders of Independence, Kansas; great-grandchildren Eli Sanders, Talan Paul, Lacie Sanders and Jaxton Sanders; granddaughter Heather Poe and husband, Dallas Poe of John Day, Oregon; great-grandchildren Brexton, Haven and Kannon Poe; granddaughter Megan Morris and fiancé Nathaniel Madl of Thayer, Kansas; great-grandchildren Stetson Madl and Ava Dugan; and son Paul Glass of Benton. KANSAS CITY, Kan. —&nbsp;The U.S. Women’s National Team will play two matches in September against Paraguay and two matches in October against Korea Republic to finish its 2021 domestic schedule, including in Kansas City on Oct. 21.

Both sets of matches will take place during their respective FIFA international match windows and will feature the players from the bronze-medal winning 2020 Olympic Team.

“The work never stops and every game we play has meaning,” said WNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “These games are important to welcome back our Olympic Team to play in front of our home fans, but they are also the first steps towards 2023 World Cup qualifying. We all know we have to be at the top of our game to win at the highest levels and the dedication of the entire group to that pursuit will never change.”

In October, the USA will come together in the home area of Vlatko Andonovski to take on Korea Republic on Oct. 21, at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan. (7 p.m. CT on ESPN2 and TUDN) and then will travel to St. Paul, Minnesota to complete that two-game series at Allianz Field on Tuesday, Oct. 26 (6:30 p.m. CT pre-game on FS1 and 7 p.m. CT on TUDN).

The four games will be the final matches in a U.S. uniform for USWNT legend Carli Lloyd, who will play her Farewell Match on Oct. 26 in Minnesota. Lloyd is currently the second-most capped player in world soccer history with 312 games played for the USA and has scored 128 international goals, fourth in USWNT history. She needs two goals to tie Kristine Lilly for third all-time.

US Women's National Team to play in KC in October

EMPORIA —Law enforcement authorities have made 5 arrests in the September 2017 murder of 19-year-old Jesus Avila, according to a media release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The arrests were made throughout the morning on Wednesday,&nbsp; at various locations in Emporia, as well as in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Kansas Highway Patrol and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol assisted with the arrests.

Just after 4a.m. authorities arrested Andrew John “AJ” Granado, 21, of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was booked into the David L. Moss Criminal Justice Center in Tulsa County, Oklahoma.

Just before 6a.m. authorities arrested Jordy Cornejo-Campoverde, 21, of Emporia.

Just before 8:30a.m. authorities arrested Armando Nunez, 20, of Emporia and Alan Alanis, 19, of Emporia, was arrested at approximately 9:30 a.m.

Just before 11a.m., authorities arrested Jovan Pecina, 22, of Emporia.

Following their arrests Cornejo-Campoverde, Nunez, Alanis, and Pecina were booked into the Lyon County Jail.

All five suspects were arrested on requested charges of murder in the first-degree, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery, arson, and interference with a law enforcement officer.

KBI: 5 accused in 2017 murder of Kansas teen

WASHINGTON (AP) —Federal officials are extending into January a requirement that people on airline flights and public transportation wear face masks, a rule intended to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The Transportation Security Administration’s current order was scheduled to expire Sept. 13. An agency spokesman said Tuesday that the mandate will be extended until Jan. 18.

The TSA briefed airline industry representatives on its plan Tuesday and planned to discuss it with airline unions on Wednesday. The mask rule also applies to employees on planes and public transportation.

The mask mandate has been controversial and has led to many encounters between passengers who don’t want to wear a mask and flight attendants asked to enforce the rule. The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday that airlines have reported 3,889 incidents involving unruly passengers this year, and 2,867 — or 74% — involved refusing to wear a mask.

Individual airlines declined to comment on the Biden administration’s decision, and their trade group, Airlines for America, said only that U.S. carriers will strictly enforce the rule. A broader group, the U.S. Travel Association, said the extension “has the travel industry’s full support.” The largest union of flight attendants said the move will help keep passengers and aviation workers safe.

“We have a responsibility in aviation to keep everyone safe and do our part to end the pandemic, rather than aid the continuation of it,” said Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants. “We all look forward to the day masks are no longer required, but we’re not there yet.”

The mask order, based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for responding to the pandemic, was first issued on Jan. 29, days after President Joe Biden took office. Before that, airlines had their own requirements for face coverings but former President Donald Trump’s administration had declined to make it a federal rule.

The extension was not surprising after a recent surge in COVID-19 cases linked to the delta variant of the virus. The seven-day average of new reported cases has topped 140,000, an increase of 64% from two weeks ago and the highest level in more than six months.

Henry Harteveldt, a travel-industry analyst with Atmosphere Research Group, said the administration’s decision will reassure people who are concerned about the virus.

“I anticipate it will make them feel more confident about traveling through the fall and winter, including the holiday season,” Harteveldt said. “Those who don’t take the virus seriously will probably complain — but they have no choice but to suck it up and wear their masks if they want to take an airline flight somewhere.”

In recent days, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines have reported that the increase in coronavirus infections has caused a slump in bookings beyond the usual slowdown that occurs near the end of each summer.
