Today in History - Oct. 15

RICE COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp;Law enforcement authorities arrested a Sterling man Thursday morning after an investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

Just after 8 a.m., KBI agents served an arrest warrant at the residence of 2020 Avenue R in Sterling, Kansas. The Rice County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol assisted during the arrest, according to a media release from the KBI.

Jonathan A. Braden, 43, also known as Jonathan Behnke, was arrested without incident. He was booked into the Rice County Jail for two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, and 25 counts of sexual exploitation of a child. The crimes allege Braden engaged in sexual conduct with a juvenile, and possessed and manufactured child pornography.

In September 2019, a report was made to the Grandview Plaza Police Department when a subject discovered images of child pornography that were suspected to be Braden’s. The Grandview Plaza Police Department began investigating. They requested KBI assistance in October of 2019.

On Dec. 19, 2019, a search warrant was executed at Braden’s residence in Sterling, and evidence was located and seized.

KBI: Kansas man jailed for alleged child sex crimes 

WICHITA –&nbsp; A new AAA survey of Kansas first responders, including police, fire fighters, tow drivers&nbsp;and utility workers, sheds an alarming light on dangerous driving behaviors that have resulted, nationally, in hundreds of deaths at the roadside.

92% of Kansas first responders and other roadside workers polled* said they have had at least one near miss incident or felt their life threatened &nbsp;- with 24% saying it happens "routinely" - because motorists do not slow down or move over for those working along the roadside, despite the fact that Kansas law requires them to do so.

"Nationwide, an average of 24 first responders are killed every year while working along the roadside – that’s a tragic loss of life every other week," said Shawn Steward, spokesman for AAA Kansas. "AAA and our traffic safety partners pushed for passage of the Move Over law here in Kansas but, clearly, there is still work to be done to ensure the safety of any motorist disabled at the roadside and the first responders who come to their aid."

The AAA Poll of Kansas First Responders* found:

●Almost 60% percent of first responders including law enforcement, EMS, tow truck drivers and roadside workers say that, in their experience, Kansas motorists do NOT slow down and move over for those working along the side of the road

●50% of first responders say they do NOT feel more safe since the Move Over law was put in place

●92% say that they personally have been involved in a near miss incident or had their life threatened because a motorist failed to move over

●With 24% saying it happens ‘ROUTINELY’

The findings of the first responders’ poll are in sharp contrast to an earlier AAA poll of Kansas drivers – more than 96% of whom said that they do slow down for first responders at the roadside and 95% of whom said they move over a lane whenever safe to do so. But first responders say that is not what they are experiencing.

"Troopers across Kansas have noticed that drivers are not moving over when approaching and passing emergency vehicles and roadway maintenance vehicles," said Lieutenant Candice Breshears of the Kansas Highway Patrol. "First responders and roadway workers are dedicated to making our Kansas highways safer for everyone traveling in and through Kansas. Not only is it a Kansas law to move over, but it is also the courteous thing to do. We want everyone, including our first responders, to make it home safely to their families. Please do your part and Move Over and Slow Down for all roadway workers."

"All first responders should be able to do their jobs along the roads safely, without fear of being struck by a passing vehicle," said Kansas Secretary of Transportation Julie Lorenz. "Their service to the public is vital. Please follow the law and give these workers the respect they deserve – move over and slow down for everyone who works along the roadway."

Already this year, two AAA tow drivers have been killed while assisting motorists at the roadside - but it’s not just first responders who are at risk. Since 2015, more than 1,600 people have been struck and killed while outside of a disabled vehicle.

Some states have extended Move Over protections to include stranded motorists and everyone at the roadside.

"The goal is not just to make motorists aware of the law. The goal is to change driver behavior and put an end to these senseless tragedies," AAA Kansas’ Steward adds.

AAA: Kansas first responders sound alarm about deadly roadside risks

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple charges after a traffic stop.

Just before 10 p.m. Monday, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2003 Honda Odyssey minivan at SW 10th Street and SW Wanamaker Road, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 The minivan was reported stolen through the Topeka Police Department. There were two adult woman, an 8-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl inside the vehicle during this incident. 

Throughout the investigation, deputies found illegal narcotics, according to Christian. They arrested the driver, Shalena N. Broadway, 29, of Topeka, on a warrant out of Jackson County and requested charged with possession of methamphetamine, aggravated endangering a child, felony theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, driving while license suspended, identity theft, forgery and burglary to vehicle.

The passenger, Jessica D. Riley-Perkins, 27, of Topeka, was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, identity theft, forgery and burglary to vehicle.

Sheriff: Kansas mother jailed after driving with kids in stolen van

CHICAGO –&nbsp;U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Vlatko Andonovski has named a 21-player training camp roster for the upcoming October matches against Korea Republic which will mark the USWNT return of Kansas native and Kansas City NWSL goalkeeper Adrianna Franch and the final appearances for legend Carli Lloyd in a U.S. uniform.

The USA will take on Korea Republic on Oct. 21 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan. (7 p.m. CT on ESPN2 and TUDN) and then will travel to St. Paul, Minn., to complete that two-game series at Allianz Field on Oct. 26 (6:30 p.m. CT pre-game on FS1 and 7 p.m. CT on TUDN).

The USWNT begins its BioSteel Training Camp on Monday in Andonovski’s home area of Kanas City to prepare for its final domestic matches of the year. The match in Kansas City also represents a homecoming of sorts for the U.S.'s Franch, who hails from Salina and currently plays in the NWSL with Kansas City. A 2019 World Cup champion and 2020 Olympic bronze medalist, Franch is the only player from Kansas to ever make a world championship roster for the USA.

The trip to Minnesota also marks a return to the roots of the U.S. Women’s National Team program. The USWNT played its first nine domestic games in Blaine, Minn., over 1986 (2 games), 1987 (4 games) and 1990 (3 games) at what was then the Blaine Soccer Complex and later the National Sports Center.

Before the game in Kansas City, midfielder Lindsey Horan will be honored for reaching 100 caps. Horan, 27, is the 41st USWNT player to earn that distinction. The Colorado native earned her 100th cap during the Olympics on July 24 in a 6-1 victory against New Zealand, a match in which she scored her 23rd international goal.

The roster features 17 players from the bronze medal-winning 2020 Olympic Team, plus four additions in forwards Mallory Pugh and Sophia Smith, midfielder Andi Sullivan and defender Emily Fox. Pugh, Sullivan and Smith were on the roster for the USA’s two wins over Paraguay in September (with Sullivan and Smith scoring their first international goals during that series) while Fox was named to her first roster since matches against Colombia in January at which she earned her fourth cap. Fox also participated in training camp prior to the start of the 2021 SheBelieves Cup.

Franch selected for US National Team matches against Korea

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a gun fight that sent two men to the hospital in critical condition.

Just after 7p.m.Tuesday, police responded to a shooting call at a home in the 2800 block of West Maple in Wichita, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

Upon arrival, officers located a 36-year-old man inside the home who had been shot. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and remains hospitalized. 

Officers also located a 32-year-old man in an alley north of the home hiding underneath a vehicle who also had been shot.&nbsp; EMS transported him to an area hospital in critical condition and he remains hospitalized, according to Davidson.

The investigation revealed the 32-year-old forced himself into the home of a 36-year-old male acquaintance earlier in the day, who was not at home.

The 32-year-old vandalized a vehicle in the driveway before leaving. At approximately 7 p.m. man came back to the home and forced his way inside again while armed with a handgun. The 36-year-old observed the suspect with the gun and retreated to a room inside where he also obtained a handgun. The two exchanged gun fire.

Multiple other individuals were inside the home at the time of the incident, according to Davidson. Only the two men were injured.

The incident stemmed from an ongoing property dispute, and detectives recovered two handguns during the investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the 32-year-old is released from the hospital, he will be booked into jail on requested charges of aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, criminal damage to property, and felon in possession of a firearm, according to Davidson.

Marsha Sue Korthanke Weaver, 71, Cocoa Beach, FL, passed away in the early morning hours on Sunday, October 10, 2021, after a three-year battle with cancer.

Many people didn’t know Marsha still had cancer after she recovered from a successful bone marrow stem cell transplant in 2018. Earlier that year, she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a treatable, but incurable blood cancer, which is the third most common blood cancer only to leukemia and lymphoma.

Marsha was never going to let cancer define her or hold her back from experiencing life to its fullest. She was always upbeat and full of life, even on her last day of life. She didn’t suffer when she passed.

Marsha was born on February 20, 1950 in Sabetha, Kansas. She graduated from Hiawatha, Kansas High School in 1968. She attended Kansas State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics and journalism in 1972, and a master’s degree in 1975. She worked as a Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent for K-State Research &amp; Extension for 36 years, before retiring in 2008. Marsha was married for 48 years to Charles (Chuck) Weaver. They were married on September 1, 1973 in Robinson, KS. She and Chuck moved to Cocoa Beach, FL in 2019. Marsha loved it there. Every day she would sit on the patio overlooking the water with a cup of coffee in the mornings and with a beverage in the evenings watching the beautiful sunsets. She and Chuck were often visited by a local blue heron, whom Marsha named “Harry.” They also keep a home in Abilene, KS where she and Chuck spent the summers watching their grandsons play baseball, soccer and helped with the boys’ 4-H projects for the fair. She was a member of the local PEO Chapter CZ, Literary League and served on the Abilene Community Foundation board of directors. She was also a founding member of the Dickinson County Arts Council.

In her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at the Eisenhower Presidential Library. Marsha loved to read and enjoyed socializing with her friends in a local book club and a French club. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Abilene, Kansas. Marsha liked to stay active and could always be found walking around the neighborhood in the mornings, whether in Abilene or Cocoa Beach. Marsha’s friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Abilene. The family will also host a visitation on Friday, October 22 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Martin Becker Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene.

Debby graduated from Hutchinson High School, then went on to receive her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in art at Fort Hays State University.

She had various jobs to support herself, but her passion was art of all kinds.&nbsp; She loved poetry and wrote two books with her art and poetry.&nbsp; She was able to fulfill her lifetime dream in opening a gallery in Brookville call the “Ark Gallery.”

Throughout her life she loved people, animals, music, and nature walks.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by a brother, James Eckart, and her parents, DeMerle E. Eckart, Sr., and Marjorie (Maddy) Eckart.

She is survived by a sister, Jermaine McGregor, a brother, DeMerle E. (Gail), Jr., nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

COWLEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after&nbsp;&nbsp;he allegedly battered a police officer and also engaged in disorderly conduct, according to a media release.

Just after 5p.m. Oct. 10, police responded to MeadowWalk Apartments, 925 W. Skyline Road in Arkansas City for a report of trespassing.

When they arrived, they made contact with deputies from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office who already were on scene and learned that&nbsp;Issa Ahmed Moder Nemr, 38, was&nbsp;apparently very intoxicated.

The manager of MeadowWalk Apartments wanted Nemr removed from the premises because he was being very loud and disruptive. He then refused to follow commands from officers, according to the release.

Nemr made several aggressive movements toward officers and was taken into custody for disorderly conduct. He was escorted to an Arkansas City Police Department patrol vehicle for transport.

However, Nemr then head-butted one of the Arkansas City officers in the face. He subsequently was brought back under control and placed into a Cowley County Sheriff’s patrol truck for transport.

The Arkansas City police officer sustained only minor injuries and did not require medical treatment.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nemr was booked on requested charges that include&nbsp; battery of a law enforcement officer and disorderly conduct.&nbsp;

October is National Bullying Prevention Month and Child Advocacy and Parenting Services (CAPS) is doing its part to spread awareness of the need to replace bullying behavior with kindness.

CAPS is home to the Bullying Prevention education program that visits elementary and middle school classes in the surrounding area. 

<a href="http://Stopbullying.gov">Stopbullying.gov</a> reports bullying prevention approaches that involve the entire school community show the most promise in creating spaces of safety and respect.

CAPS Bullying Prevention uses strategies to strengthen targets and witnesses to use their power to end bullying. The goal is to empower students to use empathy and reconciliatory justice with their peers. CAPS Bullying Prevention encourages youth to replace bullying with positive behaviors and actions.

Additionally, CAPS is joining forces with DVACK for a Speak Night at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Participants can speak out against bullying and violence with a story, poetry, song or other five-minute performance. Today in History - Oct. 13

COWLEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect in connection with three burglaries that occurred while the occupants were at church.

On October 8, police responded to 416 N. Sixth Street in Arkansas City for a report of a burglary in progress, according to a media release. They arrived and spoke to the homeowner, who reported that he had a security camera inside his home.

While attending a local church service, the victim, a 35-year-old Arkansas City man, observed someone entering his home on the camera and notified police.

Officers cleared the residence and determined the suspect had left before they arrived. Police identified 18-year-old Cristian Alexis Vega-Alvarez as the suspect based on the home security video footage.

The victim said his home had been burglarized a week ago, also while he was attending church, and so he installed the security camera in case the residence was ever burglarized again.

Police later learned another member of the same church, a 29-year-old Arkansas City man, also had his home at 503 N. Eighth St. broken into while he was attending a church service on Sept. 20.

Officers determined Vega-Alvarez previously was a member of the same church as the victims, but recently had quit attending services. They later located him and took him to the police department for questioning, during which officers learned Vega-Alvarez allegedly had committed all three burglaries.

He was taken into custody without incident and booked him into the Cowley County jail on requested charges that include three felony counts of burglary of a dwelling, three misdemeanor counts of theft of property totaling less than $1,500 in value, and one misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property.&nbsp; He remains in custody.

Nelsen Petersen is scheduled to discuss his travels in Africa in conjunction with his new book, Selfies with Livingstone . . . I Presume!, on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in Cook Theatre on the Concordia campus of Cloud County Community College. Petersen's presentation is the first 2021-2022 Cook Series event sponsored by the college. A book signing and reception is scheduled to follow his presentation.

Petersen, a Concordia native, is a writer, speaker, and historian based in Lincoln, Neb.&nbsp; His first book, Selfies with Sacajawea, details his modern-day following of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery expedition from Missouri to the Pacific Northwest in the early 1800s.&nbsp; His latest book, Selfies with Livingstone . . . I Presume! recounts his 24-day journey through Tanzania and Zambia where in 1871 Henry Morton Stanley searched for the missing – and presumed dead – Dr. David Livingstone, an English missionary and explorer.&nbsp;

Petersen and his traveling companion, Victoria Nikonenko, a Ukrainian journalist, embark on a journey and find the continent that most people don’t know about, including “Africa’s most valuable resource, its people.” Along the way, he experiences the frustrations and joys of traveling by foot, bus, and train, the harsh conditions for the inhabitants of these African countries and tourists alike, and the exquisite beauty of the African landscape. As described on the book’s cover, “It’s a story of adventure and friendships in the heart of Africa.”

This year marks the 29th year of the Charles and Marian Cook Series at Cloud County Community College. The Cooks were travelers who wanted to bring the world to those who could not travel themselves. More than 75 events have been presented through the sponsorship of the Cook Foundation and the Division of Humanities, Social Sciences and Business at Cloud. It was always Marian Cook’s wishes that all Cook Series events be free and open to the public.
