Today in History - Nov. 7

Brad Meltzer&nbsp;is a prolific, multimedia best-selling author and creator of dozens of legal and historical thrillers, television shows, TED Talks, comic books and children’s books, among many other pursuits.

But he never imagined that two of his children’s books in his “<a href="https://www.ordinarypeoplechangetheworld.com/" target="_blank">Ordinary People Change the World</a>” series would stir a free speech controversy.

He learned in September that the Central York School Board in Pennsylvania had&nbsp;<a href="https://miami.cbslocal.com/2021/09/21/brad-meltzer-books-banned-pennsylvania-school-board/" target="_blank">vetoed a list of resources</a>&nbsp;that were suggested last year for use in the wake of the&nbsp;George Floyd&nbsp;murder and civil unrest. The list, which included Meltzer’s books “I am Rosa Parks” and “I am Martin Luther King Jr.,” was “frozen” for some time, as board members put it. The board eventually nixed the list, asserting that the materials were divisive. In August of this year, one school principal circulated the list and said, “Please see the attached list of resources that are not to be permitted to be utilized in the classroom.”

Meltzer learned the news through his social media sites, he said in an interview. “People started telling me they banned our books on&nbsp;Rosa Parks&nbsp;and&nbsp;Dr. King.” He was stunned. After all, the books were meant to “help kids build character, kindness and compassion one real hero at a time,” as Meltzer put it on his website. Among the heroes featured in the series along with Parks and King are&nbsp;Neil Armstrong, Benjamin Franklin, Jane Goodall, Jackie Robinson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Lucille Ball. Aimed at ages 5 to 8, the books are illustrated by&nbsp;Christopher Eliopoulos.

“People were of course shocked that anyone would ban heroes” like Parks and King,” Meltzer said. “Soon, Fox News called and asked me to come talk about it. Then CNN did the same. When Fox and CNN agree, I think the school board realized they screwed up.”

Board President&nbsp;Jane Johnson&nbsp;said, “What we are attempting to do is balance legitimate academic freedom with what could be literature/materials that are too activist in nature, and may lean more toward indoctrination rather than age-appropriate academic content.”

Meltzer viewed the controversy as a First Amendment issue. “Race is a hard subject, but if you don’t talk to kids about race, you’re doing them a disservice.”

Meltzer moved quickly to fight the ban. He helped residents gather hundreds of the “not-to-be-permitted” books to be placed in Little Free Library locations in the area. Students also protested.

“Really, it was the amazing students in the community who fought to bring these books back,” he said. Meltzer, who lives in Florida, went to the school board meeting in September and read aloud from “I am Rosa Parks.”

The board voted unanimously to allow access to the books. “We speak and listen to parents and community members to better understand and address concerns,” said board member&nbsp;Jodi Grothe, according to the&nbsp;York Dispatch. “We have heard you.”

Meltzer offered advice for those who are experiencing similar book bans, which have multiplied across the country as legislators and school boards ban race-related educational materials that might make students uncomfortable.

“Take the lessons of Dr. King and Rosa Parks,” Meltzer said, “Do not stand for this. Protest. These bans are only going to increase. They are born out of fear and they work because people are scared. Look at the words they use to justify them: ‘Indoctrinating your children.’ The word indoctrination has been used throughout history to target the Black community, the Jewish community, the gay community and so many more. Don’t let them divide us. Do not stand for it.”

Fighting a book ban exercised and defended First Amendment freedoms! Locals&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/assembly/" target="_blank">assembled</a>&nbsp;by organizing book drives and student protests. Meltzer&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/petition/" target="_blank">petitioned</a>&nbsp;by speaking before the school board. They all defended&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/speech/" target="_blank">free speech</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/press/" target="_blank">press freedom</a>&nbsp;by opposing censorship of books based on the ideas in them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What is next for Meltzer? “I’ll write even more on this issue,” he said. His latest “I am” book, out Oct. 21, features&nbsp;Oprah Winfrey.

“In February,” Meltzer added, “we have ‘I am Malala Yousafzai’ and ‘I am Muhammad Ali,’ purposely to teach protests. And wait until you see who’s coming after that.”

The federal agency that oversees U.S. election security pushed back at unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud in a statement, saying that local election offices had detection measures that "make it highly difficult to commit fraud through counterfeit ballots." Sen. Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, said Trump was "damaging the cause of freedom" and inflaming "destructive and dangerous passions" by claiming, without foundation, that the election was rigged and stolen from him. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A 21-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/kansas">Kansas</a>&nbsp;lawmaker charged with domestic battery over a disturbance involving his brother said Thursday that he's stepping away from his legislative duties for a week.

Freshman Democratic state Rep. Aaron Coleman of Kansas City tweeted that he's taking a “leave of absence” following a Johnson County district judge's order Monday that he undergo a mental health evaluation. Coleman said he's required “to admit myself to a mental health facility.”

Coleman didn't immediately respond to text, email and cellphone messages seeking further details. His tweet described the prosecution of him as “Frivolous” and an attorney entered a not-guilty plea for him Monday.

A House committee reprimanded him in February over allegations of abusing girls and young women before taking office. Coleman had acknowledged some of the behavior on social media and said he'd been a troubled teenager.

He also was banned last month from the Kansas Department of Labor’s offices over allegations of disruptive behavior. Coleman said he was trying to help constituents.

The misdemeanor battery charge against Coleman stems from an incident Saturday night at his grandfather's home. His grandmother has said that the dispute with his brother was over “religious beliefs” and Coleman also accused his brother of stealing his phone.

Some House Democrats, including their leader, have called on Coleman to resign.

Criminal case leads Kansas lawmaker to step aside for week

On Nov. 5, 2017, a gunman armed with an assault rifle opened fire in a small South Texas church, killing more than two dozen people; the shooter, Devin Patrick Kelley, was later found dead in a vehicle after he was shot and chased by two men who heard the gunfire. MANHATTAN – As the number of weeks to Christmas slowly creeps into the single digits, many parents are already getting a pretty good idea of this year’s hottest toys.&nbsp;

A new version of Baby Yoda that eats snacks and features more than 40 sounds and motions. The Nintendo Switch. Or how about a Space Jam "Lebron James" Shoot and Dunk Playset?&nbsp;

Children may be asking for the flashiest and brightest – and by association, often the most expensive – toys this year, but K-State Research and Extension child development specialist Bradford Wiles said those may not always be the best choice for their long-term growth.&nbsp;

“The thing about toys is they are a means for learning,” Wiles said. “As young children, we need to manipulate things and figure out how things work, which are all concepts that many of us take for granted. We need to feel the friction and pliability of toys, be able to bend and even break or lose toys to learn what (disappointment) feels like.&nbsp;

“The idea is that children use toys to further their cognitive development, to understand more about their world through these things that are accessible enough for them to manipulate.”&nbsp;

The hottest toys of the season might help accomplish those developmental goals, Wiles said, but simpler, less expensive options are also good choices.&nbsp;

“One thing I like about the very simple toys is that they encourage imaginative play, whereas when you have the toys with the imaginary components already built in – sirens, jet noises, car noises – what you find is that children aren’t making those noises on their own. They are letting the toy do it,” Wiles said.&nbsp;

“Part of learning and developing our minds is attempting to make these noises, attempting to understand how to mimic noises and learning how our vocal chords work and our mouths work. There comes a point when we start to deprive children of experiences that we know are beneficial because we are over-compensating for that with the gifts we are giving.”&nbsp;

To illustrate his point, Wiles pointed to a simple kitchen toy set, which allows the child to imitate what the adults are doing in the family kitchen. “It’s a way for children to do some observational learning and apply it using a model of something that exists in the real world,” he said.&nbsp;

Regardless of the toy given, Wiles said “there is no substitute for human, facial interaction.”&nbsp;

“If you want toys to help your child meet their potential, play with them,” he said. “Talk about what you’re doing with them; engage with them. Toys, like books, are a means to engagement. For children, you could give them a mouse pad. As long as you’re playing with them with the mouse pad, it’s great.”&nbsp;

&nbsp;January 6, 1935 -&nbsp; November 1, 2021

Elinor was born January 6, 1935 in Solomon, Kansas, the daughter of Mildred Watt Wiley and Harry A. Wiley. She graduated from Enterprise High School in 1953 and from Kansas Wesleyan College in 1957. She married Wayne C. Haas in August 12, 1962. Elinor taught English and literature at Abilene High School for 37 years, serving as head of the English department for 23 years. She retired in 1994 and was inducted into the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame in 1996. After retiring from teaching she volunteered at the Eisenhower Presidential Library for 22 years. She received the Weismann Outstanding Volunteer Service Award, given to her at the annual State of the Archives Address and Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Elinor was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Chancel Choir for many years. She was active in Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Abilene Area Retired Teachers, and the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. She served as a board member for Dickinson County Community Foundation and chaired the scholarship committee. The Abilene Chamber of Commerce recognized her with a Volunteer of the Year award. Elinor was a frequent patron of the Abilene Public Library and served on the Library Board of Trustees. She was in charge of the donated books and the frequent sales that created funds of library programs, events, and other needs. Elinor never found a book she thought should be recycled. Elinor was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wayne, and brother Ronald Wiley.

Survivors include her brother Darrell Wiley (Lucille), Abilene, and sister Deloris Bell, Overland Park, Kansas. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Eilinor will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Enterprise.&nbsp;

Wiley. She graduated from Enterprise High School in 1953 and from Kansas Wesleyan College in 1957. She married Wayne C. Haas in August 12, 1962. Elinor taught English and literature at Abilene High School for 37 years, serving as head of the English department for 23 years. She retired in 1994 and was inducted into the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame in 1996. After retiring from teaching she volunteered at the Eisenhower Presidential Library for 22 years. She received the Weismann Outstanding Volunteer Service Award, given to her at the annual State of the Archives Address and Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Elinor was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Chancel Choir for many years. She was active in Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Abilene Area Retired Teachers, and the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. She served as a board member for Dickinson County Community Foundation and chaired the scholarship committee. The Abilene Chamber of Commerce recognized her with a Volunteer of the Year award. Elinor was a frequent patron of the Abilene Public Library and served on the Library Board of Trustees. She was in charge of the donated books and the frequent sales that created funds of library programs, events, and other needs. Elinor never found a book she thought should be recycled. Elinor was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wayne, and brother Ronald Wiley. Survivors include her brother Darrell Wiley (Lucille), Abilene, and sister Deloris Bell, Overland Park, Kansas. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Eilinor will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Enterprise.&nbsp; Contributions to the Abilene Public Library, Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad or Eisenhower Presidential Library Foundation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

WICHITA – As we prepare to turn our clocks back an hour at 2 a.m. this Sunday, with the end of Daylight Saving Time, many may rejoice for the extra hour of sleep. However, AAA Kansas is reminding drivers to prepare for potential challenges, such as changes in sleep patterns that may increase chances of drowsy driving, and shorter days that mean driving&nbsp;home in the dark.



Sleep-deprived drivers cause more than 6,400 deaths and 50,000 debilitating injuries on American roadways each year, according to the National Sleep Foundation (<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d9%2b%3a6%3c1-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=482948&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">NSF</a>).

“While many will enjoy an extra hour of sleep this weekend, few commuters and motorists realize the added dangers that can come as the result of a time change – especially when they are behind the wheel,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “Although we gain an hour of sleep, our sleep patterns are disrupted. This can result in unsafe drowsy driving episodes.”

Previous research by the AAA Foundation estimates that drowsy driving is a factor in an average of 328,000 crashes annually, including 109,000 crashes that result in injuries and 6,400 fatal crashes.

“The end of Daylight Saving time this weekend will bring shorter days and longer nights,” noted Steward. “Night driving brings challenges, so we urge motorists to slow down, increase their following distance, use headlights to make yourself more visible, and be extra cautious on our roadways.”

●Turn on your headlights to become more visible during early morning and evening hours.

●Keep vehicle headlights and windows (inside and out) clean.

●Do not use high beams when other cars or pedestrians are around.

●Yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks and do not pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks.

AAA Kansas tips for pedestrians and bicyclists

●Cross only at intersections.&nbsp; Look left, right and left again and only cross when it is clear. Do not jaywalk.

●Cross at the corner - not in the middle of the street or between parked cars.

●Avoid walking in traffic where there are no sidewalks or crosswalks. If you have to walk on a road that does not have sidewalks, walk facing traffic.

●Evaluate the distance and speed of oncoming traffic before you step out into the street.

●Wear bright colors or reflective clothing if you are walking or biking near traffic at night. Carry a flashlight when walking in the dark.

●Avoid listening to music or make sure it is at a low volume so you can hear danger approaching.

●Bicycle lights are a ‘must have’ item for safe night riding, especially during the winter months when it gets dark earlier.

AAA: End of Daylight Saving Time means increased driving danger

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the October 27, shooting death of 22-year-old Chase Anderson in Hoisington.

Just after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Hoisington Police arrested&nbsp; 32-year-old Adam M. Sullivan of Hoisington, on requested charges of involuntary manslaughter connected to the shooting, according to a media release from the KBI.

Sullivan was already in custody at the Barton County Jail when he was arrested for the new charge.

Just after 3a.m. Oct. 27, the Hoisington Police Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting at 405 E. 2nd&nbsp;St. in Hoisington.

When officers arrived they located Anderson suffering from a gunshot wound.&nbsp; EMS arrived and attempted life-saving measures. A short time later Anderson was pronounced dead.

Preliminary information revealed that Anderson was shot in the chest with a handgun. His acquaintance, 32-year-old Adam Sullivan, of Hoisington, was also in the residence at the time of the shooting. Officers arrested him for possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Barton County Jail.

A renowned poultry breeder and his private poultry art collection will be featured during the November First Friday event at The Flower Nook.

First Friday at The Flower Nook, 208 E. Iron Avenue, is scheduled for 4:30-7 p.m. Friday. The event is part of a larger First Friday event comprised of multiple Salina Downtown entities.

Frank Reese is a standardbred poultry breeder and farmer based in the Lindsborg area. He is committed to the protection and stewardship of the oldest continuously bred flocks of standardbred poultry in the United States, according to information from The Flower Nook.

"Reese has been raising and mating these birds since he was a child, and he's proud to own the oldest continuous strains of standard-bred heritage birds in North America," The Flower Nook noted. "These flocks are kept and maintained on his farm, The Good Shepherd Poultry Ranch, which due to Frank's efforts, has become nationally renowned by farmers and chefs alike."

Reese also is progressing in his effort to create the Good Shepherd Conservancy Center where he plans to save rare breeds of chickens and turkeys. The center will be located adjacent to his farm.

But that's not all! Reese also has an outstanding poultry art collection, pieces of which are on display in The Flower Nook.

In addition to Reese and his poultry art collection, The Flower Nook will host special guest artists Lee Becker and Jim and Cathy Richardson. And, as always, there will be a variety of pieces from a plethora of regional artisans.

Reese also is scheduled to be next door at Redefine Nutrition, 204 E. Iron Avenue, as a part of First Friday. While there, he will reflect on the past, present, and future of certified standardbred poultry.

Other downtown entities that have scheduled First Friday activities include the following.

From 4-7 p.m., Streit Sandblasting, 111 S. Santa Fe Avenue, is hosting Waves, a display of passionate strokes by local artist Kirsten Lilak.

The Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe Avenue, will have an opening reception for its new tri-part exhibition, New Landscapes, from 5-7 p.m.

The Salina Art Cinema, 150 S. Santa Fe Avenue, is featuring The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (PG-13) at 6 p.m.

Blushe Boutique, 128 S. Santa Fe, is hosting Shelly Arnold and custom decor items by Studio A from 4-7 p.m.

Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat, 148 S. Santa Fe, is hosting Personal Topography by Hannah Marcotte, a compilation of her experiences of people and places.

Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Avenue, is featuring the work of 12-year-old photographer Aterriona Cooper. The exhibition will focus on how faith in Christ is shown in the world today.

George Grabon, 80, of Salina, passed away Friday, October 29, 2021.&nbsp;

George was born the&nbsp;only child to William and Jeanette (Aronowicz) Grabon on June 10, 1941, in New York City, New York.&nbsp;

George attended and graduated from New York University with a bachelor’s degree.

George enlisted in the Navy on August 12, 1964. His enlistment time took him to places he never would have imagined. He was sent to Vietnam, where he earned the Navy Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal with Device, and the Vietnam Service medal with two (2) stars. George was always proud to have served this country and we should all be thankful he did.&nbsp;

During George’s term in the Navy, George met his future wife, Myra Duthie, while stationed in Scotland. George eventually married Myra on June 26, 1971, in Dundee, Scotland.

Following the service, George found employment as a business consultant, before a transition to working for Jamaica Water Supply, and finally working in management for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

In his spare time, George enjoyed reading history, historical fiction and fantasy books, as well as collecting stamps, and building Lego sets.&nbsp;

George was preceded in death by his parents William and Jeannette (Aronowicz) Grabon.

George is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Myra Grabon, a fine son, Andrew and his wife Susan Grabon of Beloit, and one grandson, Evan Grabon.

George will receive military honors graveside at 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2021, at the veteran’s cemetery at Fort Riley, 5181 Wildcat Creek Rd., Manhattan, KS.&nbsp;

Memorials may be made to&nbsp;the VFW or the Veteran’s Administration in care of Roselawn Mortuary, P.O. Box 2322, Salina, 67402.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and have made an arrest.

On October 2, police were dispatched to a disturbance with shots fired near 8th and Fillmore in Topeka, according to Lt. Kelvin Johnson.

 Officers arrived and met with several people in the area and located one subject with an obvious gunshot wound. Through the investigation, a suspect was identified as Quaton Grover, 43 of Topeka.

Just after 3:00 p.m, Tuesday, with the assistance of the United State's Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Grover was located and eventually taken into custody in the 2600 block of SE Adams. 

&nbsp;Grover was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Criminal Discharge of a Firearm stemming from the October 2nd shooting.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Six women in the&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;House and a former female member are calling on a male lawmaker to resign after being charged with domestic battery and ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.

The seven Democrats calling for freshman Democratic state Rep. Aaron Coleman of Kansas City to step down also called on him to resign in December 2020, before he took office.

 </figure>Coleman, 21, faces the domestic battery charge in Johnson County over a Saturday night disturbance involving his brother at his grandfather’s home. Coleman's attorney entered a not guilty plea for him Monday.He also was banned last month from the Kansas Department of Labor’s offices over allegations of disruptive behavior. Coleman said he was trying to help constituents.A legislative committee reprimanded Coleman in writing in February over accusations of abusive behavior toward girls and young women before he took office. He acknowledged some of the behavior and said he'd been a troubled teenager.The lawmakers calling for his resignation are Reps. Stephanie Byers of Wichita, Linda Featherston of Overland Park, Christina Haswood of Lawrence, Jo Ella Hoye of Lenexa, Mari-Lynn Poskin of Leawood and Lindsay Vaughn of Overland Park. They are joined by former Rep. Jennifer Day, who gave up her seat earlier this year.
