Due to inclement weather concerns, this year's North Central Activities Association league track meet has been rescheduled from Thursday, May 10 to Friday, May 11th.

Both the high school and junior high meets will be held on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University, with field events set to kick things off at 1:30 pm.

Two Trojan three-peats will be up for grabs, as the Southeast of Saline boys and Beloit girls each look to defend their league crown for a third-straight year.

NCAA League track meet rescheduled to Friday

On Wednesday, KSHSAA officially released its schedule for this year's softball regionals, and Southeast of Saline will be the host site of the first two rounds in the upper half of their bracket.

The Lady Trojans (18-2) will come into this year's Lyons Regional as the one-seed and will square off with Nickerson (1-19) to open postseason play around at around 3:00 on Monday.

That game will take place 30 minutes after another game in Gypsum that will see 9-9 Hesston battle a 6-12 Smoky Valley team that Southeast swept earlier in the year.

Later that evening, the two winners will face off in the regional semifinal, again on the campus of SES, for the right to play for a ticket to state at 5:30 in Lyons on Tuesday.

On the other side of the bracket, Lyons (1-17) will host Hoisington (15-4), with the winner moving on to battle Ellsworth (15-5) or Ellinwood (3-16) in the other semifinal.

Lady Trojans receive one-seed, right to host at Lyons Regional

The Southeast of Saline track and field teams put on a show at their home invitational, posting a 1-2 finish ahead of a seven-team field.

The boy’s team finished head and shoulders above the rest, scoring 182 points to finish nearly 100 points ahead of their next closest competition in Abilene.

Meanwhile, it was the best result of the season for the girl’s team, as the Lady Trojans took second, behind only another league foe in Beloit.

Trojan track takes 1-2 finish at home meet

The Southeast of Saline softball team closed out their regular season in a doubleheader decimation of the Russell Broncos, putting the exclamation mark on their impressive campaign.

With two identical run-rule-shortened wins of 18-0, the Lady Trojans wrap up the regular season at 18-2 and 9-1 in league play, sharing the NCAA title with Beloit, who swept Republic County on Thursday.

SES will enter regional play on a seven-game winning streak, having won 15 of their 20 games by mercy rule and eight by shutout, and close out the campaign with a +231 run differential.

The Lady Trojans wasted no time pouring it on in game one, striking for six runs in the first and twelve in the second en route to their first 18-0 victory.

Bryna Baird was on another level in the circle, facing nine batters and striking out each and every one in a no-hit shutout effort.

Four different Lady Trojans recorded multi-RBI games, led by Chase Gilpin, Savannah Sutton, Bryna Baird, and Jayci Burghart.

Game two saw more of the same as SES piled on ten runs in the first and eight in the second en route to yet another 18-0 win.

This time around it was Carly Commerford and Aba Pearson who dominated in the circle combining to toss three more innings of no-hit ball, walking just one and striking out six.

The Lady Trojans will be back in action to kick off their postseason run on May 15th at the Lyons Regional.

The Southeast of Saline golf team came home to take eighth place at this year's Junction City Invitational amidst a loaded field of 4, 5, and 6A schools.

Joel Huffaker led the way for the Trojans, finishing 21st on a day that saw him card an 85.

Trojan golf takes eighth at Junction City Invite

The Southeast of Saline baseball team concluded their regular season on Thursday, dropping two games at the hands of a former league foe in Russell.

With finals of 12-1 and 15-4, the Trojans close out the year at 13-7, and 9-1 in NCAA play, with another league title in the rearview and an appearance at regionals ahead.

The Trojans did muster a run in the second but it wasn’t nearly enough as Southeast fell in the opener 12-1.

Game two saw a closer game through the first two innings as the SES trailed just 4-2 going into the third, but an eight-run frame for Russell allowed the Broncos to cruise to a shortened 15-4 victory to complete the sweep.

The Trojans will begin their postseason run on May 15th at the Burlington regional.

Trojans fall to Russell, conclude regular season at 13-7

With wins of 4-3 and 12-2 over Ellsworth on Tuesday, the Southeast of Saline baseball team is right back on top, defending their title as NCAA league champions for a sixth straight season.

In addition to locking up at least a share of this year’s league crown, these wins move the Trojans to 13-5 overall and allow them to finish at 9-1 in league play, extending their win streak to six in the process.

With a little under a week of baseball left to be played, Sacred Heart, who Southeast split with earlier this season, is the only team capable of evening out with the Trojans, but will need to sweep 5-3 Beloit in order to deny SES the outright title.

As for the Trojans, they took care of business in fine fashion, winning a nailbiter in the opener before breezing by the Bearcats to secure the sweep in the nightcap.

The hero of game one’s pitchers duel was sophomore sensation Cole Gilpin, who pitched yet another gem, tossing a complete game in which he allowed just six hits and two walks, fanning six more in a 4-3 victory.

The Trojans gave Gilpin just enough run support in a game that saw timely RBI hits from Trever Keller, Grady Gebhardt, and Jase VanAmburg.

All of those hits came late, as Ellsworth held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth, but with their backs to the wall, the Trojans struck back with three of their own to take their first lead of the game.

The Bearcats mustered up two runs in response to even the score going into the home half of the seventh, but the SES had other ideas, wasting no time walking it off to take game one in dramatic fashion.

In game two, Southeast was called upon to come back again as Ellsworth took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but a two-run home half allowed the Trojans to tie things up before blowing it open with a six-run third and ending it early with a four-run sixth.

This time around, it was Luke Gebhardt who joined VanAmburg atop the stat sheet, with that duo combining for two big hits that brought seven runs in to score.

On the bump, the Trojans got a great combined effort from Jake Gebhardt, Killian Vaughan, and Trever Keller, who tossed six total innings of four-hit ball, striking out five in the process.

Southeast will be back in action one final time this Thursday when they host the Russell Broncos for their regular season finale.

Trojans take two from Ellsworth to secure sixth-straight league title

With their fourth league doubleheader sweep of the season, the Southeast of Saline softball team can officially cross the first order of business off of their list, as the Lady Trojans have claimed at the very least, a share of this year’s NCAA title.

Thanks to run-rule-shortened victories of 16-1 and 11-1, the Lady Trojans now sit at 16-2 overall, and 9-1 in league play, with only Beloit, a team SES split with earlier this season, capable of evening their record.

The Orange Trojans have one final set with 2-4 Republic County on Friday, with a sweep ensuring them the title of co-league champions, and anything less ensuring that Southeast stands alone at the top.

Once again, SES looked untouchable on Tuesday, allowing just six hits across their doubleheader to extend their win streak to five.

Southeast started strong, scoring four runs in the first, and ten in the second before tacking on a singular score in the third and fourth to cruise to a 16-1 win&nbsp;

It was another dominant effort in the circle for Bryna Baird, who allowed just one run on one hit while striking out six.

As for the Lady Trojan lineup, most of their damage came from the middle of their order, as the three through eight spots accounted for nine hits, and all 12 runs driven in on the day.

Game two was more of a contest early as Southeast plated just two in the first, and one in the second and third before exploding for a seven-run fourth to put this game to bed.

Once again, Ellsworth mustered a single run, this time in the fifth, but it was far too little far too late as the Lady Trojans completed the sweep in an 11-1 effort.

At the dish, Chase Gilpin, Bryna Baird, and Lexi Jacobson all recorded multi-RBI games in the nightcap, with the third member of that trio helping her own cause in the circle as well.

Jacobson tossed five innings of one-run ball, allowing just five hits, refusing to issue a single walk, and recording five strikeouts.

The Lady Trojans will return to Gypsum for their regular season finale this Thursday when they host a former league foe in Russell.

Southeast softball bashes Bearcats to lock up league title

After tying for the top spot at this year's Hesston Invitational on Monday, the Southeast of Saline Golf team collected their second tournament win in as many days, this time, standing head and shoulders above the rest at this year's Marion Invite.

With a team score of just 319, the Trojans finished a whopping 35 strokes clear of their next closes competition in Hutch Trinity, adding yet another dominant win to their resume.

Individually, Southeast accounted for four of the top six, led by Dylan Esch, who would go on to win individually, carding a 75 on the day.

The Southeast of Saline golf team kept the good times rolling in 2022, emerging on top in a tie with Hesston for first place at this year's SES Invitational.

SES golf shares first at home invitational

It was another excellent day for the Southeast of Saline track and field teams, who despite competing in a field of 30 other schools still managed to post a first and 14th place finish.

This marks a fourth meet victory in five attempts for the defending state champion boys team, who finished with 142 points, a full 52 clear of their next closest competition in Chapman.

Meanwhile, the SES girls closed out their meet in the top half of the field, with a pair of podiums in the distance races from Ashley Prochazka.

Here then is a look at every member of each team who found the podium at this year's Beloit Relays.

SES golf finishes fifth at Hesston Invite

After a big bounce back over Beloit last week, the Southeast of Saline baseball team stayed on the warpath this Tuesday, decimating Minneapolis in one of their biggest shows of force this season.

With mercy-rule-shortened three-inning wins of 20-0 and 15-0 the Trojans advance to 11-5 on the year and slide into the driver's seat of the NCAA, equalling Sacred Heart’s record of 7-1 in league play.

Southeast has now won eight games by run-rule and after a bit of a stumble from their pitching staff, has won three of their last four and seven overall via the shutout.

Things started off normally enough in the opener, as SES plated two runs in the first, and five in the second before going absolutely nuclear with a 13-run third inning to secure a 20-0 victory.

All nine Trojans in the order recorded at least one hit with the heart of the SES lineup dealing massive damage as Jake Gebhardt, Mac Chambers, and Trever Keller combined to go 6/9 at the plate, driving in an absurd 13 runs.

Meanwhile, it was a gem on the hill for Cole Gilpin, who didn’t allow a single hit through three innings, recording a trio of strikeouts while allowing just one walk.

After a scoreless first, the Trojans picked up right where they left off in game two, striking for ten runs in the second and five more in the third to once again secure a win in just three innings, this time by a 15-0 final.

Of the nine members in the Southeast lineup, eight would record at least one hit in game two, with Trever Keller continuing his assault on baseballs, driving in five and coming across three times himself as part of a 3/3 day at the plate.

In the two-game set, Keller solidified himself as a Lion killer, going 5/7 with nine driven in and four runs scored.

The excellence on the hill continued in the nightcap as Landen Allen completed a three-inning shutout, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five.

After nearly a month on the road, the Trojans will finally return to Gypsum on Tuesday, when they host the Ellsworth Bearcats with a chance to secure at least a share of the league title on the line.

Trojans trounce Minneapolis in league sweep

Following a pair of splits, the Southeast of Saline softball team returned to ransacking the rest of their league, collecting two mercy-rule-shortened wins over Minneapolis on Tuesday.

With victories of 14-0 and 12-1, the Lady Trojans move to 12-2 overall and slide into first alongside Beloit at 7-1 in league play.

Meanwhile, Minneapolis drops to 7-5 on the year and 5-5 in the NCAA, with the Lady Lions now tied for third with Ellsworth.

In addition to upping their run differential to a ridiculous +170 on the year, Southeast has now won 11 of their 14 games by run rule, including six via shutout, and the Lady Trojans can secure at least a&nbsp; share of the league title if they win their final two NCAA games with Ellsworth next week.

SES chipped away at the Lions with a slow, methodical attack in game one, striking for a run in the first, two in the second, another in the third, and five in the fourth and fifth to take the opener 14-0.

The Minneapolis bats didn’t stand a chance against Bryna Baird, who cooked up five innings of one-hit ball, surrendering just two walks and recording 12 of her 15 outs with a K.

Once again it was a group effort in the Lady Trojan lineup, as eight of the nine members recorded at least one hit, and seven drove in at least one run, led by Carly Commerford and Lexi Jacobson, who combined to go 6/7 with 5 RBI.

Game two saw more of the same, although this time it was three big punches that delivered SES the 12-1 victory with a five-run second, a four-run fourth, and a three-run sixth.

In the circle, the baton was passed to Lexi Jacobson who picked up right where Baird left off, recording ten strikeouts in six innings, and allowing just four hits and four walks.

Carly Commerford and Savannah Sutton would each record multi-hit games in the nightcap, and Jacobson aided her own cause driving in three runs in the win.

The Lady Trojans will take the rest of the week off to rest up for what will be a huge doubleheader next Tuesday when at long last, SES will return home to host the Ellsworth Bearcats.

Lady Trojans flatten Lions, move two wins away from league title

Scholarship awards, facilities, updates, and executive sessions are among the items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to hear a follow-up report concerning several county facilities. In February, commissioners met to review the results of a draft Facility Master Plan for the county. During that meeting, commissioners asked County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes to follow up with several of the items in the proposed master plan and report back in April. Smith-Hanes is scheduled to do so Tuesday. The follow-up report is scheduled to include the following, according to information in the commission meeting packet.

Leasing the county farm for solar development As part of the commission’s study session, staff reported that the county had been approached about creating a solar panel installation on the Hagg Farm owned by the county. Commissioners expressed interest in pursuing this idea, so the deputy county administrator followed up on Feb. 23 with emails to solar developers. On April 3, one of the interested firms responded that they had prepared a preliminary project layout and would like to meet.

Staff recommendation: Task staff to prepare a report detailing existing farm leases, when they expire, any amendments to zoning codes that would be required, and a process for soliciting bids from developers.

Selling the health department building One of the points of discussion on Feb. 21 was the potential to purchase the parcel immediately south of the health department building on N. Seventh Street, which was for sale. Rather than pursue a purchase of additional space at that location, the commission was interested in the potential for selling the existing building. On Feb. 27, Smith-Hanes met with the realtor representing the parcel to the south, who identified that she might have parties who would be interested in purchasing the health department site, including some who might be willing to purchase the building now and then lease it back to the county until a site has been identified to relocate the health department.

The Smith-Hanes also met with the county counselor to review the process for the sale of a county-owned building. Pursuant to K.S.A. 19-211, the commission would need to unanimously vote to sell the building, publish a notice of sale, and then select the highest and best bid in a public meeting.

Staff recommendation: Task staff to return with a draft notice of sale for Commission consideration, including lease-back provisions as a condition of sale.

City of Salina interest in county properties The commission had asked for more information regarding the city’s potential interest in the redevelopment of Memorial Hall, expansion of the Salina Police Department into the current sheriff’s office space, and development of housing on the county’s Caywood property off of S. Ohio Street. The county administrator and deputy county administrator met with the city manager and deputy city manager on March 14. The police department is interested in the sheriff’s office space and the city manager will confirm authorization to proceed with the city commission. He also plans to discuss with the city commission the idea of a joint space study to examine the future of the City-County Building and adjacent downtown properties, including Memorial Hall. He will also be discussing with the Utilities Department potential to lease some land to alleviate storage constraints at the Expo Center. The city commission was scheduled to meet for strategic planning on April 18 and more definite information may be available after that session. The city does not have a particular interest in taking charge of development on the Caywood land but understands that the county may wish to sell it for development.

Staff recommendation: Task staff to include within the 2024 budget funding for a joint study of downtown spaces and negotiate a temporary lease on the sheriff’s office space effective Jan. 1, 2024, subject to city commission feedback.

Converting a portion of the current jail into juvenile space In the public survey on jail reuse that was conducted as part of Facility Master Plan recommendation development, one of the strongest interests of respondents was in converting the soon-to-be-closed jail facility into a facility for juveniles. The county administrator met on March 23 with Shawn Brandmahl, executive director of the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility and Geary County Secure Care Center. That agency operates the juvenile detention center for a 15-county region and also contracts with the state to house children in need of care.

Brandmahl confirmed that he is interested in exploring a facility in Saline County. He would look at a facility with seven detention beds and 21 secure care beds, along with room for future expansion. He believes that his agency will need more detention beds as state policies shift back towards locking up juveniles accused of serious criminal activity, but the state will not pay for any construction costs. In order to fund the detention beds, he would need to contract with the state for additional beds for children in need of care. The state pays a premium on these beds, which could support a bond or lease payment on a facility. Brandmahl asked if Saline County would be willing to cover half of the cost of retaining an architect to examine the county jail and determine the feasibility and costs of converting it to the proposed use. He also expressed concern about the availability of a workforce in Saline County to staff a new facility.

Staff recommendation: Task staff to identify funding for an architect, negotiate an agreement with North Central Juvenile Detention to share costs, and return to the commission for consideration.

Other items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday include the following.

●Consider a request to proclaim April 2023 as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

●Consider approving a request from Community Corrections for a training contract for Paul Cary. The training would cover drug testing best practices and would be covered by funds budgeted for Community Corrections staff training and by registration fees from other attendees.

●Consider approving a request from the Road and Bridge Department for the purchase of Harshman aggregates.

Scholarships, facilities on Saline County agenda for Tuesday

Salina Area Technical College celebrated National Tech Signing Day on Thursday. The nationally celebrated event recognizes students who are entering technical fields and emphasizes the commitment of tech colleges to help students gain skills necessary to compete in high demand jobs. 

The event took place at the Salina Tech Student Success Center, 2562 Centennial Road, where students were honored for their dedication to pursuing technical careers. 

Brenda Gutierrez, executive director for the Salina Tech Foundation, said students who participated in the national signing day event received a $1,000 scholarship.

Students signed commitments to continue their education or start their careers at Salina Tech. The event was attended by families of the students signing and&nbsp; Salina Tech faculty, staff, and fellow students.

Students who were on campus to sign commitments included:

Madison Brackney, Prairie View, Dental Assisting Emma Gilpin, Pratt, Dental Assisting Hannah Fleming, Clay Center, Dental Assisting Laramee Chestnut, Glade, Early Childhood Education

Retired career technical education coordinator and former school board member for Southeast of Saline, Joe Ryan, served as the guest speaker for the event.

Ryan currently serves on the Smoky Valley school board and served as the master of ceremonies for Salina Tech's first signing day four years ago.&nbsp;

Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, national signing day was moved to a virtual format. Salina Tech President Greg Nichols, said having this year's signing event not only in person, but also in the recently renovated student success center, made it a huge success.&nbsp;

"Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we had never done the signing day remotely, so now having them [signing students] come back on campus, it gets them the excitement of oh, 'This is really happening,'" said Nichols. " I don't think people are just looking for show, it's got to be substance. You got to put on your best presentation for attracting people. The jobs are going to attract people in one way, but our facilities are in good shape. We are working towards maintaining and improving a lot of different facilities."&nbsp;

Brackney said she decided to join the dental assistance program because she always had issues with her teeth. Thanks to the help of dentists and dental assistants, Brackney said she has greater confidence and a better smile.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"I want to work in a job that will allow me to boost people's confidence and to help people like me," Brackney said.&nbsp;

Brackney is from the town of Prairie View and attends high school in Logan. Last year she and her family visited Salina Tech for a tour to help in the decision making process.

"Salina Tech has always really stuck with me," Brackney said. "After seeing the program's classrooms and with the recent renovations it seems like a lot of new and cool stuff is happening here in Salina."

Because not all of the students who were signing commitment papers were able to make it to Salina for the Thursday event, Erica Kruckenberg, vice president of student services, visited other high schools that preferred their students stay on campus. In total, 29 students signed letters of commitment to Salina Tech.

Gutierrez also emphasized the signing event would not have been possible without the more than 25 individuals, businesses, and industries support for the scholarships given out.&nbsp; Local sponsors able to attend the event on Thursday included

Donations in support of national signing day are still being accepted.&nbsp;

Salina Tech celebrates National Tech Signing Day

The Southeast of Saline track and field teams were back in action on Friday at this year’s Abilene Invitational and performed well despite stacking up against much larger competition.

The boy's team finished their meet in third place with 107 points, just behind 5A Hays and 4A Wamego, with eight individuals and two relay teams accounting for 14 podium finishes.

Meanwhile, a trio of Lady Trojans would find the podium in four different events as the girl’s team closed out their meet in seventh with 41 points.
