PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — The parents of a teen accused of killing four students in a shooting at a&nbsp;Michigan&nbsp;high school were caught early Saturday, several hours after a prosecutor filed involuntary manslaughter charges against them, officials said.

James and Jennifer Crumbley were captured in a commercial building in Detroit that housed artwork, Detroit Police Chief James E. White told a news conference. White said the couple “were aided in getting into the building,” and that a person who helped them may also face charges.

A Detroit business owner spotted a car tied to the Crumbleys in his parking lot late Friday, Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe said in a statement. A woman seen near the vehicle ran away when the business owner called 911, McCabe said. The couple was later located and arrested by Detroit police.

A prosecutor filed involuntary manslaughter charges against the Crumbleys on Friday, accusing them of failing to intervene on the day of the tragedy despite being confronted with a drawing and chilling message — “blood everywhere” — that was found at the boy’s desk.

The Crumbleys committed “egregious” acts, from buying a gun on Black Friday and making it available to Ethan Crumbley to resisting his removal from school when they were summoned a few hours before the shooting, Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said.

Authorities had been looking for the couple since Friday afternoon. Late Friday, U.S. Marshals announced a reward of up to $10,000 each for information leading to their arrests.

The Crumbley's attorney, Shannon Smith, said the pair had left town earlier in the week “for their own safety.” Smith told The Associated Press they would be returning to Oxford to be arraigned.

However, White said the Crumbleys “appeared to be hiding” in the building where they were found. He added that the parents appeared to be “distressed” when they were captured.

“Head down... just very upset,” he said of one of the parents. The couple was booked into the Oakland County Jail.

Earlier, the prosecutor offered the most precise account so far of the events that led to the shooting at Oxford High School, roughly 30 miles&nbsp; north of Detroit.

Ethan Crumbley, 15, emerged from a bathroom with a gun, shooting students in the hallway, investigators said. He’s charged as an adult with murder, terrorism and other crimes.

Under Michigan law, the involuntary manslaughter charge filed against the parents can be pursued if authorities believe someone contributed to a situation where there was a high chance of harm or death.

Parents in the U.S. are rarely charged in school shootings involving their children, even as most minors get guns from a parent or relative’s house, according to experts.

School officials became concerned about the younger Crumbley on Monday, a day before the shooting, when a teacher saw him searching for ammunition on his phone, McDonald said.

Jennifer Crumbley was contacted and subsequently told her son in a text message: “Lol. I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught,” according to the prosecutor.

On Tuesday, a teacher found a note on Ethan’s desk and took a photo. It was a drawing of a gun pointing at the words, “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me,” McDonald said.

There also was a drawing of a bullet, she said, with words above it: “Blood everywhere.”

Between the gun and the bullet was a person who appeared to have been shot twice and is bleeding. He also wrote, “My life is useless” and “The world is dead,” according to the prosecutor.

The school quickly had a meeting with Ethan and his parents, who were told to get him into counseling within 48 hours, McDonald said.

The Crumbleys failed to ask their son about the gun or check his backpack and “resisted the idea of their son leaving the school at that time,” McDonald said.

Instead, the teen returned to class and the shooting subsequently occurred.

“The notion that a parent could read those words and also know that their son had access to a deadly weapon that they gave him is unconscionable — it’s criminal,” the prosecutor said.

Jennifer Crumbley texted her son after the shooting, saying, “Ethan, don’t do it,” McDonald said.

James Crumbley called 911 to say that a gun was missing from their home and that Ethan might be the shooter. The gun had been kept in an unlocked drawer in the parents’ bedroom, McDonald said.

Ethan accompanied his father for the gun purchase on Nov. 26 and posted photos of the firearm on social media, saying, “Just got my new beauty today,” McDonald said.

Over the long Thanksgiving weekend, Jennifer Crumbley wrote on social media that it is a “mom and son day testing out his new Christmas present,” the prosecutor said.

Asked at a news conference if the father could be charged for purchasing the gun for the son, McDonald said that would be the decision of federal authorities.

In a video message to the community Thursday, the head of Oxford Community Schools said the high school looks like a “war zone” and won’t be ready for weeks. Superintendent Tim Throne repeatedly complimented students and staff for how they responded to the violence.

He also acknowledged the meeting of Crumbley, the parents and school officials. Throne offered no details but summed it up by saying, “No discipline was warranted.”

McDonald was asked about the decision to keep Crumbley in school.

“Of course, he shouldn’t have gone back to that classroom. ... I believe that is a universal position. I’m not going to chastise or attack, but yeah,” she said.

Asked if school officials may potentially be charged, McDonald said: “The investigation’s ongoing.”

Fugitive parents of alleged Michigan school shooter captured

Armin John Herbin, age 97, formerly of Jamestown, KS passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at Stormont Vail Health Center, Topeka, KS.&nbsp; He was born on July 20, 1924 in Jamestown, KS to Leon Alcide and Bertha Josepha (Schulte) Herbin.

He attended Jamestown public schools and graduated from high school in 1942.&nbsp; He attended Creighton University until he entered the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served his country until 1946.&nbsp; Following his discharge from the military, he returned to Jamestown and joined his father Leon at the Jamestown State Bank.&nbsp; 

In 1948 he married Edith Marie Nordhus at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville, KS.

He worked with his father at the Jamestown State Bank and operated John Herbin, Inc. real estate and insurance agency in Jamestown.&nbsp; He was an alumnus of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin.&nbsp; He served as the president of the Randall National Bank, Randall, KS and the Jamestown State Bank, Jamestown, KS.&nbsp; He oversaw the construction of the new Jamestown State Bank building in 1975.&nbsp; He retired in 1989.

He was an active member of the community in Jamestown and a lifelong resident.&nbsp; He was a member of the Lion’s Club, a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW, the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia and former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Jamestown.&nbsp; He served on the board of trustees for Cloud County Community College, the Jamestown City Council and the USD 333 school board.&nbsp; He was an avid car collector.

He is survived by his wife Edith, Topeka; son John F. Herbin, Jamestown; daughters, Jean (Fred) Meis, Minden, NE; Mary (John) Horan, Chicago, IL; Ann (Mike) Powell, Topeka and Margi (Duane) Puckett, Lincoln, NE; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joan Byrnes.

Due to COVID, there will be a private family Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Fr. David Metz officiating on Friday, December 10, 2021.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Jamestown.&nbsp; The services will be recorded and uploaded onto the funeral home website to be viewed following the services.&nbsp; Friends may sign the register book from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, December 9, 2021 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home.&nbsp;

The family suggests memorials to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church or the Jamestown Parks and Rec. Dept., in care of the funeral home.&nbsp;

Herbin of Jamestown, Kansas | Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home (chaputbuoy.com)</a>July 20. 1924 - December 2, 2021Armin John Herbin, age 97, formerly of Jamestown, KS passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at Stormont Vail Health Center, Topeka, KS.&nbsp; He was born on July 20, 1924 in Jamestown, KS to Leon Alcide and Bertha Josepha (Schulte) Herbin.He attended Jamestown public schools and graduated from high school in 1942.&nbsp; He attended Creighton University until he entered the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served his country until 1946.&nbsp; Following his discharge from the military, he returned to Jamestown and joined his father Leon at the Jamestown State Bank.&nbsp; In 1948 he married Edith Marie Nordhus at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville, KS.He worked with his father at the Jamestown State Bank and operated John Herbin, Inc. real estate and insurance agency in Jamestown.&nbsp; He was an alumnus of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin.&nbsp; He served as the president of the Randall National Bank, Randall, KS and the Jamestown State Bank, Jamestown, KS.&nbsp; He oversaw the construction of the new Jamestown State Bank building in 1975.&nbsp; He retired in 1989.He was an active member of the community in Jamestown and a lifelong resident.&nbsp; He was a member of the Lion’s Club, a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW, the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia and former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Jamestown.&nbsp; He served on the board of trustees for Cloud County Community College, the Jamestown City Council and the USD 333 school board.&nbsp; He was an avid car collector.He is survived by his wife Edith, Topeka; son John F. Herbin, Jamestown; daughters, Jean (Fred) Meis, Minden, NE; Mary (John) Horan, Chicago, IL; Ann (Mike) Powell, Topeka and Margi (Duane) Puckett, Lincoln, NE; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joan Byrnes.Due to COVID, there will be a private family Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Fr. LAWRENCE –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks had seven players named All-Big 12 on Thursday, the league announced, headlined by a pair of second-team selections in defensive end Kyron Johnson and safety Kenny Logan Jr. The Jayhawks also had five players named to honorable mention All-Big 12, including left tackle Earl Bostick Jr., wide receiver Kwamie Lassiter II, linebacker Rich Miller, running back Devin Neal and center Mike Novitsky. Logan, Johnson and Lassiter all earned honorable mention honors last season, while Neal, a true freshman, and Novitsky and Miller, a pair of transfers from Buffalo, are being recognized by the league for the first time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

DE Kyron Johnson (All-Big 12 Second Team) A super-senior from Arlington, Texas, Johnson had his best season as a Jayhawk in 2021. He led the Jayhawks in tackles-for-loss (8.5) and sacks (6.5). His four forced fumbles ranked third-most in the Big 12 and his 6.5 sacks ranked seventh. He also led the team in quarterback hurries with 10 as a menace in the backfield. Johnson finished the season with 61 tackles, establishing a new career high. Johnson’s 61 tackles were the most by any Big 12 defensive lineman. According to PFF, Johnson created 40 total pressures, and in 655 total snaps, Johnson did not commit a single penalty. The Texas native finished his Jayhawk career with 193 total tackles, 12.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles-for-loss.&nbsp; &nbsp;

S Kenny Logan Jr. (All-Big 12 Second Team) The junior safety from St. Augustine, Fla., flourished in 2021, putting together one of the most productive seasons by a defensive back nationally. Logan led the Big 12 with 113 tackles, which leads all defensive backs in the country. He also led the Big 12 in total tackles, tackles per game and solo tackles per game (6.6). Logan’s 79 solo tackles rank third in the country. He is the only player in the nation with 110+ tackles, 6+ pass breakups, 2+ forced fumbles and 4+ tackles-for-loss. Logan finished the season incredibly strong, posting double-digit tackle games in each of his last three games, including posting a career-high 15 tackles at TCU. Against the Horned Frogs, he also posted two tackles-for-loss, becoming just the second defensive back nationally to have 15 tackles and two tackles-for-loss in the same game. A dangerous returner as well, Logan averaged 27.9 yards per return as a kick returner, which ranked third in the Big 12 and 14 nationally.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Earl Bostick Jr. (Honorable Mention All-Big 12) A stalwart on the offensive line, the Barnwell, S.C., native started all 12 games at left tackle for the Jayhawks in 2021. He allowed a pair of sacks in the second game of the season at Coastal Carolina, and those were the only two sacks he allowed in 807 total snaps. According to PFF, he graded out as the team’s top lineman in the Jayhawks 57-56 win over Texas last month. Bostick Jr., helped the offensive line show drastic improvement in 2021. The Jayhawks allowed just 16 sacks in 12 games, after allowing 43 sacks in nine games in 2020. Bostick Jr., also had a memorable two-point conversion catch against West Virginia in the season finale.&nbsp; WR Kwamie Lassiter II (Honorable Mention All-Big 12) The super-senior from Chandler, Ariz., Lassiter II had his best season in 2021, capping off a brilliant Kansas career that left his name all over the record books. Lassiter established career-highs and led the team in receptions (59), receiving yards (653) and receiving touchdowns (3). The 59 receptions ranked fifth in the Big 12 this season, while the 653 yards ranked eighth. He also finished second in the Big 12 in total punt return yards with 108. Lassiter finished his career, ranking fifth all-time in program history in career receptions with 148 and 12th&nbsp;in career receiving yards with 1,550. Lassiter was also the team’s Wuerffel Trophy candidate for this year. Seven Jayhawks named to All-Big 12 teams

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal incident and have identified 50-year-old Stephen Long of Seguin, Texas as the victim.

Just after 2:00 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a disturbance call at Blu nightclub in the 8700 block of W. Maple in Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macy.&nbsp; Police located Long in the parking lot, unresponsive with a head injury.

Investigators learned that Long was leaving the bar and got into an argument with someone in the parking lot. A 34-year-old man later identified as Christopher Parish of Wichita went up to Long and shoved him, causing him to fall backward and hit his head, according to Macy.

EMS&nbsp;pronounced Long deceased at the scene.

Police contacted Parish at the scene and transported him to City Hall and subsequently booked him into the Sedgwick County Jail on a requested charge of involuntary manslaughter.

WICHITA – According to a recent AAA poll of Kansas drivers, 44% of them say they have changed their daily driving habits because of gas prices.

Although gas prices have dipped slightly in the past week or so, pump prices in general are the highest they have been in seven years, prompting some drivers to consolidate errands, carpool or otherwise limit daily driving.

The national average has been above $3 a gallon since early May, mostly driven by the price of crude oil, which, until this past week, has been twice what it was last year.

News of the Omicron variant and related travel restrictions pushed the price of crude down, and the coordinated effort by the U.S. and other major oil-consuming countries to increase global supply with a strategic release of oil reserves may further reduce pump prices.

Here in Kansas, the average price of gas has also been above the $3 benchmark since mid October.

“More than a third – 37% – of Kansas drivers tell AAA that they typically change their driving behaviors when gas prices cross over the $3 benchmark,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “And then an additional 20% say they would change their driving behaviors when gas tops $3.50.”

Interestingly, while 44% of Kansas drivers tell AAA they have changed their driving behaviors because of pump prices, 29% say they do not foresee changing their driving habits because of gas prices – even if gas prices were to climb above $4 a gallon.

●Forty-four percent (44%) of respondents say they are driving less or trying to drive less because of gas prices. 

●Thirty-seven percent (37%) of drivers say they try to consolidate errands, carpool or otherwise drive less when the price of gas tops $3 a gallon.

●Twenty percent more (20%) say they would try to consolidate errands, carpool or otherwise drive less if the price of gas topped $3.50 a gallon.

 ●Thirteen percent (13%) more say they would try to consolidate errands, carpool or otherwise drive less if the price of gas were to reach $4 a gallon.

●And twenty-nine percent (29%) say they do not foresee changing their driving habits because of gas prices.

AAA Kansas offers 7 tips for saving money on gas:&nbsp;

●Slow down and drive the speed limit. On the highway, aerodynamic drag causes fuel economy to drop off significantly at speeds&nbsp;above 50 mph.

 ●Avoid extended idling to warm up the engine, even in winter. It’s unnecessary and wastes fuel.

●Use cruise control to help maintain a constant speed and save fuel.&nbsp;(However, never use cruise control on slippery roads because a loss of vehicle control could result.)

●Check&nbsp;tires for proper inflation monthly&nbsp;and keep up with basic vehicle maintenance recommendations&nbsp;to ensure fuel efficiency.

●Remove unnecessary and bulky items from your car. It takes more fuel to accelerate a heavier car. 

●Minimize your use of roof racks and remove special carriers when not in use. On the highway even an empty bike, canoe or ski rack can reduce fuel economy, and a loaded rack or car-top container will have a major effect on gas mileage.

●AAA research&nbsp;has found that&nbsp;unless premium fuel is recommended or required by your car’s manufacturer, it provides no added benefit. Motorists should refer to their vehicle owner’s manual to check which type of gasoline is recommended for their engine.

AAA poll: 44% of KS motorists driving less because of gas prices

Betty passed away Monday, November 29, 2021 at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. She was born November 29, 1942 in Lawrence, Kansas the daughter of Edward E and Lucille (Creach) Machulda. She attended Abilene High School. She was united in marriage to Danny L. VanNess on February 7, 1963. They later divorced. Betty worked in the service industry, working at Highland Nursing Home in Abilene and retired from Enterprise Estates Nursing Center in Enterprise. Betty was a pet lover and enjoyed spending time with her dog Dixie and her cat Sammy. She was an avid KU Jayhawk fan and enjoyed watching KU basketball games and enjoyed feeding and watching the birds, planting and caring for her flowers she had outside. A Salina man was arrested on requested drug charges after an officer stopped him for riding a bicycle on the sidewalk in the downtown area.

A officer observed John Robison, IV, riding a bicycle on the sidewalk in the 100 block of N. Santa Fe Avenue at approximately 1:40 p.m. Monday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Robinson then rode into the southbound lane of N. Santa Fe Avenue and onto the sidewalk on the west side of the street.

The officer attempted to stop Robison, who then fled westbound through the tunnel on the south side of Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House. Forrester said the officer then went south to W. Iron Avenue, where he observed Robison on foot in the alley. 

As the officer attempted to arrest Robison in the alley behind Cozy Inn, Robison allegedly put something in the metal grate beneath him, Forrester said. Additionally, a witness reported seeing Robison throw something over a fence around a dumpster.

Forrester said the officer located a meth pipe by the dumpster and a plastic wrapper with suspected methamphetamine inside under the grate.

Robison was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Salina man arrested on requested drug charges downtown

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a brawl at a Wichita bar that left one man dead and have made an arrest.

Just after 2a.m. November, police were dispatched to a disturbance at Mulligan’s Pub in the 8300 block of E 32nd Street in&nbsp; Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macy. 

&nbsp;Callers indicated a disturbance was occurring that involved multiple people. Officers learned that a victim, identified as 31-year-old Alonzo Haywood of Wichita, was at the bar with multiple family members. After closing time, an argument broke out between one of Haywood’s family members and a suspect later identified as 51-year-old James Thomas of Wichita.

&nbsp;Thomas was also there with multiple other people. The argument escalated when Thomas punched Haywood, causing him to fall to the ground and strike his head. At that. point, multiple people then began&nbsp; fighting.

Friends transported Haywood to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Doctors pronounced him deceased on Sunday, according to Macy.

Police located Thomas near the area of the disturbance and arrested him. After interviews, he was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on a charge of Aggravated Battery, which was later amended to Involuntary Manslaughter after Haywood died.

Patty was an auditor for the Department of Education for 33 years. Patty was very involved with her family and particularly her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Leland of Hays; a daughter, Terra Niehoff and husband Brandon of Shawnee, Kansas; three sisters, Jo Ann Deringer of Denver, Colorado, Doris Luna of New Braunfels, Texas and Betty Flanagan of Peoria, Arizona as well as two grandchildren, Emma Osborne and Jace Niehoff. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays, a 75-year member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha the international &nbsp;community service sorority and a member of the Hays Daughters of Isabella.
