Armin John Herbin, age 97, formerly of Jamestown, KS passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at Stormont Vail Health Center, Topeka, KS. He was born on July 20, 1924 in Jamestown, KS to Leon Alcide and Bertha Josepha (Schulte) Herbin.
He attended Jamestown public schools and graduated from high school in 1942. He attended Creighton University until he entered the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served his country until 1946. Following his discharge from the military, he returned to Jamestown and joined his father Leon at the Jamestown State Bank.
In 1948 he married Edith Marie Nordhus at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville, KS.
He worked with his father at the Jamestown State Bank and operated John Herbin, Inc. real estate and insurance agency in Jamestown. He was an alumnus of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. He served as the president of the Randall National Bank, Randall, KS and the Jamestown State Bank, Jamestown, KS. He oversaw the construction of the new Jamestown State Bank building in 1975. He retired in 1989.
He was an active member of the community in Jamestown and a lifelong resident. He was a member of the Lion’s Club, a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW, the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia and former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Jamestown. He served on the board of trustees for Cloud County Community College, the Jamestown City Council and the USD 333 school board. He was an avid car collector.
He is survived by his wife Edith, Topeka; son John F. Herbin, Jamestown; daughters, Jean (Fred) Meis, Minden, NE; Mary (John) Horan, Chicago, IL; Ann (Mike) Powell, Topeka and Margi (Duane) Puckett, Lincoln, NE; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joan Byrnes.
Due to COVID, there will be a private family Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Fr. David Metz officiating on Friday, December 10, 2021. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Jamestown. The services will be recorded and uploaded onto the funeral home website to be viewed following the services. Friends may sign the register book from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, December 9, 2021 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church or the Jamestown Parks and Rec. Dept., in care of the funeral home.
