LAWRENCE –&nbsp;Before a capacity crowd on the floor of Allen Fieldhouse, the Kansas men’s basketball senior trio of Ochai Agbaji, David McCormack and Mitch Lightfoot were named co-recipients of the 2022 Danny Manning Mr. Jayhawk Award at its annual banquet Thursday. Players, coaches, staff, families and Williams Education Fund donors packed Allen Fieldhouse to honor the 2022 NCAA National Championship team. Displayed on the stage were the trophies the 2022 squad won during the season – the Big 12 regular-season, the Big 12 Tournament, the NCAA Midwest Region and the NCAA title. During the evening, head coach Bill Self was also presented the crystal NABC National Championship trophy for finishing No. 1 in the 2022 USA TODAY Coaches’ Poll. The evening emcee was Brian Hanni, radio voice of the Jayhawks. Following an invocation from KU All-America and associate athletics director Wayne Simien, the participants ate dinner while watching highlight videos of key moments in Kansas’ national championship run. Following the video Director of Athletics Travis Goff addressed the crowd, which was followed by the formal presentation of the NABC trophy. Self then introduced staff, players, by class, and coaches. KU’s six seniors said a brief word to the crowd and then Self handed out the Danny Manning Mr. Jayhawk trophies. “I don’t know about you guys but I haven’t come down yet and I don’t know that I want to,” Self told the crowd. “You work so hard for a common cause and you actually do it. You feel elation but you also feel overwhelmed and humbled. This team will go down as loved as any team in the 120-plus years of history at this school. The players that come here are caretakers in the period of time they are here, and what a great job this group has done as caretakers.” Kansas won its final 11 games of the season, posting a 34-6 overall record and tying Baylor for the Big 12 regular-season title with a 14-4 league mark. KU won its 12th Big 12 and 16th all-time conference tournament title and advanced to its NCAA-record 32nd consecutive NCAA Tournament, a streak that started in 1990. KU would then advance to its 32nd all-time Sweet 16 and its 16th Final Four. Today in History - April 16

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas murder suspect captured by the U.S. Border Patrol <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=158988">is in jail in</a> Kansas.

On Thursday afternoon, police booked 32-year-old Patricio Gomez into the Sedgwick County Jail on <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=158988">requested charges</a> of first-degree murder, criminal possession of a firearm and a drug charges.

On March 28, U.S. Border Patrol Agents&nbsp;in the El Paso&nbsp;Sector&nbsp;arrested Gomez who was wanted for&nbsp;murder in Wichita.

The El Paso Station&nbsp;Border Patrol Agent encountered a Gomez walking along&nbsp;the south side of the Border Barrier&nbsp;near Fonseca Drive&nbsp;and Cesar E. Chavez/Border Highway, according to a media release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

When agents questioned the Gomez as to his citizenship, he stated that he was a U.S.&nbsp;citizen and that he had&nbsp;just&nbsp;entered the United States&nbsp;from Mexico, illegally,&nbsp;by attempting to drive his truck across the Rio Grande.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Gomez, was taken into custody, for the illegal entry,&nbsp;and transported to a Border Patrol station for further investigation.&nbsp;Record checks revealed that he had an extensive criminal history&nbsp;and an&nbsp;active&nbsp;warrant&nbsp;out of&nbsp;Wichita for&nbsp;murder.

Gomez was&nbsp;remanded to the&nbsp;custody of the&nbsp;El Paso County Sheriff’s&nbsp;Office until his extradition to Wichita.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On October 1, Wichita police issued an alert in an attempt to locate Gomez.

Just before 6:30p.m. Sept. 30, 2021. officers responded to a shooting call at a hotel in the 9400 block of East Corporate Hills.&nbsp; Upon arrival, officers located 42-year-old Michael Martinez who had been shot.&nbsp; He was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The investigation revealed&nbsp;Patricio&nbsp;along with a woman arrived at the hotel regarding an illegal drug transaction.&nbsp; During the transaction, a disturbance ensued and&nbsp;Gomez&nbsp;fired multiple shots at Martinez, striking him.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gomez&nbsp;and the woman fled the scene in a black Cadillac Escalade.

Police located the Cadillac outside of a hotel in Park City.&nbsp;

 </figure>On October 1, Wichita police issued an alert in an attempt to locate Gomez.Just before 6:30p.m. Sept. 30, 2021. officers responded to a shooting call at a hotel in the 9400 block of East Corporate Hills.&nbsp; Upon arrival, officers located 42-year-old Michael Martinez who had been shot.&nbsp; He was pronounced deceased on the scene.The investigation revealed&nbsp;Patricio&nbsp;along with a woman arrived at the hotel regarding an illegal drug transaction.&nbsp; During the transaction, a disturbance ensued and&nbsp;Gomez&nbsp;fired multiple shots at Martinez, striking him.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gomez&nbsp;and the woman fled the scene in a black Cadillac Escalade.Police located the Cadillac outside of a hotel in Park City.&nbsp;

Child Advocacy and Parenting Services, Inc. (CAPS) wants to bring awareness to the issue of child abuse and neglect throughout April for Child Abuse Prevention Month. CAPS presents numerous opportunities for the month of April for advocates to engage in.

To begin with, we want to thank the community for coming together to support the 33rd Annual Benefit Auction which had 649 participants for the online event and 47 sponsors last weekend. The auction raised $57,171 to support families with CAPS services who do not qualify for any other funding source. What a testament to the importance of children who live here!

• Wearing royal blue isn’t just for the Kansas City Royals or Kansas Jayhawk fans– it is also a sign of support for Child Abuse Prevention. CAPS is inviting businesses to raise funds by encouraging employees to wear denim for a $5 donation. To participate, contact CAPS at 785-825-4493 for stickers and display materials. • Join DVACK and CAPS on April 22 at 7 pm for Speak Night at Ad Astra Books and Coffee. Speak Night is an open mic night for survivors, advocates and supporters to share their stories through poetry, speech, song or other spoken medium. The community is invited to help lift the voices of those who have experienced child abuse. Due to the nature of the content, Speak Night is not suitable for young children.

Daniel E. Britt, 71, of Abilene, passed away April 13, 2022, from cancer. He was born August 16, 1950, in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Elvin and Lona (Conn) Britt. He grew up on a farm in the Talmage area, where he attended grade school. He graduated from Chapman High School in 1968. He was a lifelong farmer and rancher, working many years with his father. He served on the Flora Township Board for more than 25 years and as a local volunteer firefighter. He was a longtime member of the Longford Rodeo Club and enjoyed helping with the annual Longford Rodeo. He also was a member of the Longford Lions Club. He enjoyed riding horses, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family, and friends. He especially enjoyed taking his grandsons on tractor and four-wheeler rides. On March 21, 1970, he was united in marriage to Cindy Watson, of Abilene.

Daniel is survived by his loving wife Cindy of the home; two daughters, Karrey Britt (Chris Hoppe), of Lawrence; and Kandi Britt of Topeka; and four grandsons, Aidan Weeks and Jonathan Britt, of Topeka; and Will and Noah Lutter, of Wamego; brothers Ronald Britt, of Maineville, Ohio, and Steve Britt, of Salina, sister Karen Watt, of Salina; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by son Josh Britt; brother Gerald Britt; and parents Elvin and Lona Britt. Funeral services for Daniel will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at the Prairiedale Cemetery north of Talmage with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. Following the service the family will receive friends at the Talmage Library (the old school house). Friends may sign the register book at the Danner Funeral Home on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to Memorial Health Center in Abilene or the Tammy Walker Cancer Center in Salina, where they provided exceptional care for Daniel. Many fatal crashes involving a distracted driver do not involve a phone

WICHITA – Given that April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, AAA wants motorists to be aware that, despite perceptions to the contrary, cellphones are not to blame for many of the fatal crashes involving a distracted driver. This is not to say that cellphones are not a significant and potentially deadly distraction, but many other distractions are also cause for concern.

According to the latest federal crash data, confirmed smartphone use accounts for about 12 percent of all fatal crashes involving a distracted driver. Although it is widely accepted that distracted driving crashes caused by cellphone use are highly underreported, the data clearly indicates there are many other distractions that warrant our attention as well.

“There is no doubt that drivers are uniquely and dramatically distracted by their phones but AAA wants to take this moment to remind drivers that the list of other distracting behaviors is long. Too long. And too many lives are being lost as a result,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman.

In fact, there are 18 possible causes of distracted driving listed on the standardized crash reporting forms investigators are required to fill out - and only three of them refer to a mobile phone. Other distractions include those caused by passengers, drivers adjusting climate or audio controls, reaching for something, eating or drinking and distracting activity outside the vehicle, such as a crash scene.

An analysis of data from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (AAAFTS) revealed that taking your eyes off the road for more than two seconds doubles your risk of a crash.

By the numbers Fatalities on our nation’s roadways have jumped dramatically in the last few years.

Due to incomplete and likely underreported data, no one knows exactly how many fatal crashes are caused by driver distraction. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that driver distraction is a factor in almost 9 percent of fatal crashes.

Analysis of the latest data from NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) found that:

●In 2020, there were more than 3,000 people killed in motor vehicle crashes involving drivers reported by the police as distracted.

●Of those killed in crashes reported as involving a distracted driver, almost 20% were between the ages of 25-35.

Pedestrian DeathsPedestrian deaths are skyrocketing nationally, and distracted driving has been identified as a contributing factor in many of those crashes.

●In 2020, there were 480 pedestrians, 83 cyclists, and 14 other non-occupants killed in crashes that involved a driver who was reported to be distracted.

●And, in the first six months of 2021, the latest data available, pedestrian deaths nationwide increase by 17% over the same period the year before.

Don’t Drive Intexticated While the phone alone is not to blame for many of the distracted driving fatalities, there are still hundreds of lives lost each year because someone felt the need to answer a call, send a text or read an email. In its annual survey about driver behaviors - the Traffic Safety Culture Index – the AAAFTS found:

●about 25 percent of drivers surveyed report typing or sending a text message or email within the past month. 

●more than 1 in 3 report reading a text or email while driving within the past month

This is why AAA launched its ‘Don’t Drive Intexticated’ campaign in 2019, reminding all drivers that just as they would not drive intoxicated, driving ‘intexticated’ is also a risk.

AAA is urging drivers to put their phones down, look up and limit ALL distractions.

Slow down, move over Distracted drivers are unlikely to see first responders working at the roadside. Move Over laws exist in all 50 states and - while the laws vary from state to state - generally speaking, drivers are required to slow down and move over a lane any time there is a first responder working at the roadside. In Kansas, this includes police, fire, ambulances, tow vehicles, KDOT or construction workers, utility vehicles and waste vehicles.

“It seems fitting that Distracted Driving Awareness Month intersects this week with National Work Zone Awareness Week because distracted driving puts those who work at the roadside at greater risk,” Steward said. “But the growing number of lives lost clearly illustrates that distracted driving in all its forms needs greater attention year round.”

AAA tips to eliminate distracted driving

●Fully focus on driving. Do not let anything divert your attention, actively scan the road, use your mirrors and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists.

●Put aside your electronic distractions. Don’t use cell phones while driving – handheld or hands-free – except in absolute emergencies. Never use text messaging, email functions, video games or the internet with a wireless device, including those built into the vehicle, while driving.

●Activate your phone’s “Do Not Disturb” feature while you are driving.

 ●Make adjustments before you get underway. Address vehicle systems like your GPS, seats, mirrors, climate controls and sound systems before hitting the road. Decide on your route and check traffic conditions ahead of time.

●If you have passengers, enlist their help so you can focus safely on driving.

●If another activity demands your attention, instead of trying to attempt it while driving, pull off the road and stop your vehicle in a safe place. To avoid temptation, power down or stow devices before heading out.

●As a general rule, if you cannot devote your full attention to driving because of some other activity, it’s a distraction. Take care of it before or after your trip, not while behind the wheel.

AAA: It’s not the phone alone

Information provided by a security app helped law enforcement apprehend two women who allegedly stole multiple items from a pickup at a Salina travel center.

A 48-year-old Salina man told police that he had received notification from his Swann Security app that someone was breaking into his 1990 Isuzu pickup that was parked at the Flying J Travel Center, 2250 N. Ohio, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The man said he checked the cameras installed in his pickup and recognized two women who were inside taking items from the pickup. Items allegedly stolen by the women include two Swann Security cameras, an LG Stylo 6 cellphone, $1,000 cash, and the ignition key, according to Forrester. Total loss was estimated at $2,305.

The man told police that he observed the women leave in a yellow Chevrolet Cavalier. He said he knew that one of the women lived in Russell. Forrester explained that the Kansas Highway Patrol was notified and they were able to stop the vehicle in Ellsworth County.

The women, identified as Sabina Ahlf, 41, of Salina, and Tehnika Baker, 41, of Russell, were transported back to Salina, where they were booked into jail on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

The property, with the exception of the cash, was returned, Forrester reported.

Security app alerts owner to 2 inside pickup; women later arrested

With the wide variety of items available, chances are you'll find something you need or want at the upcoming Salina Regional Health Center Service Auxiliary Spring Sale.

Scheduled for April 29-May 2 in the 4-H Building in Kenwood Park, the annual event already has a multitude of items for sale, including "baby items, toys, lots of décor items, kitchen gadgets, lots of good clothing, books, CDs, and a lot of miscellaneous" items, Carol Brent, one of the event organizers, told Salina Post.

Proceeds from the sale help support the operation of the Rebecca A. Morrison House and go toward healthcare scholarships, she said.

A Salina man who allegedly fled twice after an initial traffic stop was ultimately unable to escape the long arm of the law Monday.

Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges reported this morning that at approximately 2:23 a.m. Monday, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle for having a defective tag light. The vehicle pulled over, but the driver, identified by the officer as Brandon Letourneau, 27, of Salina, allegedly fled on foot.

Officers searched the vehicle and located marijuana, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia, Tonniges noted.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. Monday, officers located Letourneau at a residence in the 100 block of W. Ellsworth Avenue in reference to a domestic violence call. According to Tonniges, Letourneau once again allegedly fled on foot but was apprehended in another residence in the 100 block of W. Ellsworth Avenue.

According to the Saline County Jail booking activity report, Letourneau was booked into jail on the following requested charges.

●Interfere w/ LEO; unknown circ; felony

●Criminal trespass; Remain in defiance of order by owner

●Taxation; Drugs; No drug tax stamp for marijuana or cont substance

(AP) — A community task force reviewing the death of a Black teenager who was restrained for more than 30 minutes at a Kansas juvenile detention center found that an officer changed his answers on a form that otherwise would have led police to take the teen to a hospital instead of booking him into the detention center.

An official who oversees admissions to the Sedgwick County Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center, Jodi Tronsgard, told the task force last month that the officer initially reported that there were signs that 17-year-old Cedric Lofton needed medical attention before the officer changed his answers, The Wichita Eagle&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas.com/news/local/article260099390.html" target="_blank">reported</a>.

Yes, there were signs of intoxication with significant impairment in functioning,” Tronsgard told the task force on March 7. “...So, he was informed that if you answer ‘yes’ to these questions, you have to leave and take the youth for a medical or mental health release. And then, hearing that, he goes and then responds ‘no’ to these questions.”Interim police Chief Lem Moore said he wasn’t aware that the officer had changed his answers on the form until the newspaper asked about it. He said he has ordered a preliminary review of the case to determine if it’s possible the officer falsified information. “If issues are found, a full investigation will be conducted,” he said.Lofton’s foster father called authorities in September seeking help because the teenager was hallucinating. Police initially tried to persuade him to go to a mental health facility, but body camera video shows him refusing to go and then resisting when officers tried to force him.Lofton then was taken to the detention center, where he was restrained after a struggle with staff members. He had to be resuscitated after he was held facedown, and he died two days later.Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett declined to charge the detention center workers in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wichita-kansas-a51f619b8b196987e74b046ac399680c">January</a>, citing the state’s stand-your-ground self-defense law.He said told the newspaper for Sunday’s story that he also didn’t have enough evidence when he reviewed the case to charge the officer with falsifying information on the form, but that he would be willing to examine any new information.Emails obtained by the newspaper show that Bennett raised concerns that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent who was investigating Lofton’s death had a pro-police bias, and the agent was later removed from the case. The agent did not ask the police officers who took Lofton to the detention center about the changed answers on the admission form.Lofton’s family’s lawyer, Steven Hart, said the changed answers on the form raise additional questions about how police handled the case.“That is the most disgusting display of a lack of professionalism — or care,” Hart said. “Essentially, it was easier for them to drop him off than do what they knew was necessary and right.”County officials have said the FBI is reviewing Lofton’s death.
