SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman and two teens for alleged drug distribution.

On Feb. 26, police learned that&nbsp;18-year-old Trebreh Jones of Wichita was selling narcotic pills, and an investigation was conducted, which led to a search warrant being obtained on his residence, according to Officer Trevor Macy.

Early Sunday morning, police executed the search warrant at a home in the 1900 block of S. Shiloh. and took three occupants – Jones, 37-year-old Tanisha Evans and a 16-year-old&nbsp; into custody.

Inside the residence, officers located an AR pistol with no serial number, a .22 caliber rifle and several bags with hundreds of narcotic pills.

Jones was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on requested charges that include possession of narcotic pills with intent to sell and two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon. 

Evans is being held on requested charged of possession of narcotic pills with intent to sell, assault of a law enforcement officer and an outstanding warrant. In addition, the 16-year-old was booked to a juvenile facility for possession of narcotic pills with intent to sell.

In keeping with board policy, a building review committee was formed. They read the book and discussed potential strengths and weaknesses of the book as a literary work, along with the merits of retaining the book.

After consideration, the committee determined that the book should remain in the library. In its report, the committee determined that the district’s policy, procedures and philosophy were followed in the selection of this book.

The committee acknowledged that passages in the book describing sexual activity may be uncomfortable to read but do not detract from the value of the book. They noted that themes of the book could be affirming for students to recognize that they are not alone as they experience similar systemic challenges and societal prejudices. The book’s narrative is the perspective of an individual who intended to, “give a voice to so many from marginalized communities whose experiences have not yet been captured between the pages of a book.”

The district’s process to manage any challenges to textbooks and instructional materials is clear*. The first step is an informal process that is a meeting between the concerned individual, the school principal and the library media specialist.

In this instance, the school received a request for reconsideration of the book after that meeting.

COLEMAN: Setting and achieving your career goals

WICHITA – AAA Kansas announced today that 35 law enforcement agencies, comprising 26 police departments and nine sheriff’s offices, are receiving AAA Kansas Community Traffic Safety Awards for their 2021 work to keep roadways in their cities and counties safe through a variety of initiatives and programs.

The awards have been presented annually since 2011 by AAA Kansas to community law enforcement agencies for their efforts to successfully and cost-effectively foster and improve local traffic safety. The agencies are scored and recognized for their efforts in multiple categories, including education, emergency medical response, enforcement, and traffic engineering collaborations and solutions.

“AAA Kansas salutes these 35 dedicated law enforcement partners for their commitment, hard work and, in many cases, creative community engagement, in delivering effective and successful traffic safety programs. Our roadways are safer because of them,” said Shawn Steward, public and government affairs manager for AAA Kansas. “Our police departments and sheriff’s offices in Kansas do an excellent job of keeping motorists, cyclists and pedestrians safe in their communities.”

Local, area agencies among those winning AAA Kansas awards

Today is Tuesday, March 1, the 60th day of 2022. There are 305 days left in the year. 

On March 1, 1974, seven people, including former Nixon White House aides H.R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman, former Attorney General John Mitchell and former assistant Attorney General Robert Mardian, were indicted on charges of conspiring to obstruct justice in connection with the Watergate break-in. SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas felon, prohibited from having a weapon, made a court appearance last week after police found numerous weapons at his residence.&nbsp;

Alejandro Morales, 19 of Wichita, is charged with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On February 16, the Wichita Police Violent Crimes Community Response Team Officers spotted Morales leaving in a vehicle from a home in the 1700 block of S. Elizabeth in Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macy.

 A traffic stop was conducted, and Morales was taken into custody. 

Upon serving the warrant on the residence on Elizabeth Street, officers located four handguns, including an AK-47 pistol. Police transported him to the Sedgwick County Jail and booked him.&nbsp;

His next court date is March 7, according to the district attorney's office.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating suspect on multiple charges including felony interference with law enforcement following a pursuit on Saturday.

&nbsp;Shortly before 12:30 a.m. Saturday, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a silver 1997 Ford Crown Victoria near SE 37th Street and SE Colfax Place for speeding, according to Deputy Abigail Christian. 

The driver, later identified as Anthony L. Marshall III, 29, Topeka, pulled over and the deputy approached the vehicle. While the deputy was speaking to the driver, he learned the driver did not have a driver’s license and he observed a bag of illegal narcotic pills.

While the deputy was continuing the investigation, the driver fled the scene in his vehicle, initiating a pursuit. The pursuit continued and was ended in the 2300 block of SE Highland Avenue when the deputy performed a tactical vehicle intervention.

Deputies took Marshall into custody and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, reckless driving, interference with law enforcement, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license, failure to wear a seat belt, no vehicle liability insurance and speeding.

This incident is under investigation. Additional evidence is being sent to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Additional charges are pending.

Bernard “Bernie” Omer Bieker, age 73, passed away on Friday, February 25, 2022 at Sunset Nursing Home, Concordia, KS.&nbsp; He was born on January 19, 1949 in Cheyenne Wells, CO to Julius Omer and Marie Marcella (Forgue) Bieker.

He graduated from Notre Dame Catholic High School, Concordia.&nbsp; He then attended Brown Mackie in Salina and seminary for some time in Victoria.&nbsp; He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1975.

He was a computer programmer for most of his life in Colorado until returning to Concordia to care for his mother and has been a resident for the past 12 years.&nbsp; He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia.&nbsp; Bernie was an avid genealogy researcher and enjoyed keeping the family history together and current.

He is survived by his longtime partner Janice Henshaw, Concordia; son Andy (Megan), Boise, ID; daughter Julie Bieker Adams (Jason), Meridian, ID; brothers Lawrence (Cathy), Pittsburg, KS, Richard (Diane), James (Cathy),&nbsp;Anthony (Mary), Thomas (Crystal Wilson), all of Concordia and Dale (Kim), Benton, AR; sisters Elizabeth Deneke (Mike), Amarillo, TX, Margaret Colgrove (Dwight), Washington, KS and Kathleen Schmidt (Russ), Concordia; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded by his parents, infant brother Theodore; sister in law Cathy Bieker and a nephew, Brian Deneke.

It was Bernie’s wishes to be cremated and memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2022 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia with Fr. Salina Public Library’s Youth Services Department is once again seeking enthusiastic teen volunteers to help out during its busy Summer at the Library. The library is accepting applications for VolunTEENs until March 31.

Volunteers will help tidy library areas and shelve books, help with children’s events, tend to the library book drop and assist with other tasks as assigned. Teens will learn job skills and workplace values, and make a difference in their community. Volunteers also earn eligibility for the Joe McKenzie Youth Scholarship provided by the Friends of the Salina Public Library.

Teens ages 13-18 who can commit to at least 16 hours of volunteer work during the summer are invited to apply. Volunteer hours will be needed between May 20 and July 21. Teens need permission from a parent or guardian and need their own transportation to the library.

COWLEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a suspect following a January 19, arrest have added numerous charges against him, according to a media release from Arkansas City police.

On January 19,&nbsp; police arrested 29-year-old Dakota Mikel Hughes of Arkansas City, who was running from police and booked him into the Cowley County Jail on suspicion of two felony counts of interference with a law enforcement officer, three outside warrants for failure to appear, and one count each of criminal possession of a firearm and criminal use of a firearm.

Since then, police in Arkansas City investigated numerous burglaries, thefts and criminal damage to property cases that have occurred from November 2021 through January 2022.

Officers were able to link Hughes to many of these incidents. Cases were presented to the Cowley County Attorney’s Office from both the Arkansas City Police Department and the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp;

Hughes now is charged with seven counts of burglary, six counts of theft, four counts of criminal damage to property, three counts of criminal trespass, one count of fleeing and eluding, one count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident, and various drug-related charges.

Police continue to investigate related cases and more cases will be presented to the county attorney.

Kansas man arrested in January linked to numerous other crimes

The Salina Police Department this morning issued the following information concerning a shooting incident Wednesday night in north Salina.

 </figure>On 02-23-2022 at approximately 9:28 PM, the Salina Police Department received information that Devon Wayne Dirksen, who had warrants for his arrest, was located at the Pump Mart, 1118 North 9th Street, Salina, Kansas. Salina Police Officer Michael Chandler was dispatched to that location and contacted Dirksen inside the business.Dirksen resisted Officer Chandler’s efforts to arrest him, and a physical altercation ensued. Dirksen was able to break free from Officer Chandler and fled outside. Officer Chandler caught Dirksen across the street from the Pump Mart and tackled him to the ground. During the struggle on the ground, Dirksen pulled on Officer Chandler’s sidearm, and then Officer Chandler heard the sound of a gunshot. Dirksen was able to break free, and fled into a nearby residential area. Officer Chandler checked his handgun, and it was still secured in his holster.With the assistance of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol, Dirksen was located hiding in the area and was taken into custody without further incident. A handgun was found in the area where Officer Chandler and Dirksen were struggling on the ground, and a gunshot was heard.No one was injured by the gunfire, but Officer Chandler and Dirksen suffered minor injuries from the physical confrontation.Dirksen was booked into the Saline County Jail, and the following charges are being requested:Attempted Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer, Aggravated Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer, Attempted Aggravated Burglary, Felony Interference with a Law Enforcement Officer, Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm in the City Limits, Misdemeanor CriminalDamage to Property. In addition, Dirksen was booked on three Salina Municipal Court warrants for failure to appear and one Saline County District Court warrant for failure to appear.The Salina Police Department is continuing to investigate.
