JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a registered Kansas offender on new charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 2a.m. Sunday, a sheriff's deputy stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation&nbsp;near 126th and U.S. Highway 75, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

After an investigation, the deputy arrested he driver Tamara Jo Christian, 44, of Mayetta, at the scene. 

 Christian was booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, violating the registration offender act, driving while a habitual violator and for an outstanding Jackson County District Court warrant, according to Morse.

She has been a registered offender since 2017 for a felony drug distribution conviction, according to the Kan. Dept of Corrections.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/indiana-warsaw-religion-5d407c1309e3654a5678a3fa369ba159">viral video</a>&nbsp;in which a woman confronts her pastor at an independent Christian church for sexually preying on her when she was a teen.

Survivors of sexual assault in church settings and their advocates have been calling on churches for years to admit the extent of abuse in their midst and to implement reforms. In 2017 that movement acquired the hashtag&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sexual-misconduct-ap-top-news-us-news-north-america-metoo-b768d035ed8443ad97d193a5c36e240c">#ChurchToo</a>, derived from the wider #MeToo movement, which called out sexual predators in many sectors of society.

In recent weeks #ChurchToo has seen an especially intense set of revelations across denominations and ministries, reaching vast audiences in headlines and on screen with a message that activists have long struggled to get across.

“For us it’s just confirmation of what we’ve been saying all these years,” said Jimmy Hinton, an advocate for abuse survivors and a Church of Christ minister in Somerset, Pennsylvania. “There is an absolute epidemic of abuse in the church, in religious spaces.”

Calls for reform will be prominent this week in Anaheim, California, when the Southern Baptist Convention holds its annual meeting following an outside report that concluded its leaders mishandled abuse cases and stonewalled victims.

The May 22 report came out the same day an independent church in Indiana was facing its own reckoning.

Moments after its pastor, John B. Lowe II,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/warsaw-indiana-922d63cd92d092117b5cd5f60f7e73af">confessed</a>&nbsp;to years of “adultery,” longtime member Bobi Gephart took the microphone to tell the rest of the story: She was just 16 when it started, she said.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/maisey.cook.9/videos/325339683012147/" target="_blank">video of the confrontation</a>&nbsp;has drawn nearly 1 million views on Facebook. Lowe subsequently resigned from New Life Christian Church &amp; World Outreach in Warsaw.

In an interview, Gephart said she’s not surprised that so many cases are now coming out. She has received words of encouragement from all over the world, with people sharing their own “heartbreaking” stories of abuse.

“Things are shaking loose,” Gephart said. “I really feel like God is trying to make things right.”

For many churches, she said, “It’s all about covering up, ‘Let’s keep the show going.’ There are hurting people, and that’s not right. I still don’t think a lot of the church gets it.”

Hinton — who turned in his own father, a former minister now imprisoned for aggravated indecent assault — said the viral video demonstrates the potency of survivors telling their own stories.

“Survivors have far more power than they ever think imaginable,” he said on his “Speaking Out on Sex Abuse” podcast.

#ChurchToo revelations have emerged in all kinds of church groups, including liberal denominations that preach gender equality and depict clergy sexual misconduct as an abuse of power. The Episcopal Church aired stories from survivors at its 2018 General Convention, and an archbishop in the Anglican Church of Canada resigned in April amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

But many recent reckonings are occurring in conservative Protestant settings where a “purity culture” has been prominent in recent decades — emphasizing male authority and female modesty and discouraging dating in favor of traditional courtship leading to marriage.

On May 25 reality TV personality Josh Duggar was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-entertainment-arkansas-music-f00cacdbe17801f838ba6234c04a2fc7">sentenced in Arkansas to more than 12 years in prison</a>&nbsp;for receiving child pornography. Duggar was a former lobbyist for a conservative Christian organization and appeared on TLC’s since-canceled “19 Kids and Counting,” featuring a homeschooling family that stressed chastity and traditional courtship. Prosecutors said Duggar had a “deep-seated, pervasive and violent sexual interest in children.”

On May 26 the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.news-leader.com/story/news/local/ozarks/2022/05/26/kanakuk-kamps-abuse-unreported-decades-victims-say-missouri-pete-newman/9803409002/" target="_blank">Springfield (Missouri) News-Leader</a>&nbsp;reported on a spate of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/branson-lawsuits-michael-brown-sexual-abuse-sexual-abuse-by-clergy-312fe4d360d5de77412eee9b35f92427">sex abuse cases</a>&nbsp;involving workers at Kanakuk Kamps, a large evangelical camp ministry.

Emily Joy Allison, whose abuse story&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/emilyjoypoetry/status/1065027221654511616?lang=en" target="_blank">launched the #ChurchToo movement</a>, said the sexual ethic preached in many conservative churches — and the shame and silence it breeds — are part of the problem. She argues that in her book, “#ChurchToo: How Purity Culture Upholds Abuse and How to Find Healing.”

Allison told The Associated Press that addressing abuse requires both a change in church policy and theology. But she knows the latter is unlikely in the SBC.

“They need to undergo a transformation so radical they would be unrecognizable at the end. And that will not happen,” Allison said. Reform work focused on “harm reduction” is a more realistic approach, she said.

Some advocates hope the front-burner focus on abuse could lead to lasting reforms — if not in churches, then in the law.

Misty Griffin, an advocate for fellow survivors of sexual assault in Amish communities, recently launched a petition drive seeking a congressional “Child’s Rights Act.” As of early June, it had drawn more than 5,000 signatures.

It would require that all teachers, including those in religious schools and homeschool settings, be trained about child abuse and neglect and subject to reporting mandates, and would also require age-appropriate instruction on abuse prevention for students. Griffin said such legislation is crucial because in authoritarian religious systems, victims often don’t know help is available or how to get it.

“Without that, nothing’s going to change,” said Griffin, a consulting producer on the documentary “Sins of the Amish.”

The two-episode&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQVglFZ-HZ0" target="_blank">documentary</a>, which premiered on Peacock TV in May, examines endemic&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/religion-pennsylvania-sexual-abuse-by-clergy-assault-lancaster-0e97364f986c9b9fffaed44520fc2b1f">abuse in Amish and Mennonite communities</a>, saying it is enabled by a patriarchal authority structure, an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-religion-sexual-abuse-by-clergy-mennonite-3000fa23351b4d28b1e49c439d0063e9">emphasis on forgiving offenders</a>&nbsp;and reluctance to report wrongdoing to law enforcement.

The Southern Baptist Convention, whose doctrine also calls for male leadership in churches and families, has been particularly shaken by the #ChurchToo movement after years of complaints that leadership has failed to care for survivors and hold their abusers accountable.

At its annual meeting, the SBC will consider proposals to create a task force that would oversee a listing of clergy credibly accused of abuse. But survivors criticized that proposal and are calling for a more powerful and independent commission to perform that task and also review allegations of abuse and cover-up. They’re also seeking a “survivor restoration fund” and memorial dedicated to survivors.

Momentum for change grew as survivors such as Jules Woodson, who went public in 2018 with a sexual assault accusation against her former youth pastor, were emboldened to tell their stories.

“I felt like, ‘Thank God there’s a space where we can tell these stories,’” Woodson said.

Such accounts led to the independent investigation, whose 288-page report detailed how the SBC’s Executive Committee prioritized protecting the institution over victims’ well-being and preventing abuse.

The committee has apologized and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/religion-sexual-abuse-by-clergy-baptist-southern-convention-ade6d177368e6b7bc0981a6097a3bdc6">made public a long-secret list of ministers</a>&nbsp;accused of abuse.

Woodson said seeing her abuser’s name on it felt like a double-edged sword.

“It was in some ways validating that my abuser was on there, but it was also devastating to see that they knew and yet nobody in the SBC spoke up to warn others,” she said.

Woodson added that she is still waiting for meaningful change: “They have offered minimal words acknowledging the problem, but they have offered zero reform and true action which would show genuine repentance or care and concern for survivors or the vulnerable people who have yet to be abused.”

#ChurchToo revelations growing, years after movement began

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The death of a Black teenager at a Kansas juvenile detention center was foreshadowed five years earlier by a state inspection of the facility that noted systemic deficiencies in its handling of children with mental health issues, according to a federal civil rights lawsuit filed Monday.

Cedric Lofton’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cj-lofton-mental-health-crisis-48a306275d2cbe19da6539e0a4eb6563">foster father called authorities</a>&nbsp;in September 2021 seeking help because the 17-year-old was hallucinating and needed to go to a mental health facility. Instead, police&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-kansas-wichita-4a5aacdb2d18f75894034eef86ebd90a">forcibly took him</a>&nbsp;to the Sedgwick County Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center, where he had to be resuscitated after he was held facedown for more than 30 minutes during an altercation. He died two days later.

His brother, Marquan Teetz, acting as representative of Lofton’s estate, sued Sedgwick County, five detention center employees, the City of Wichita, and the unidentified police officers. According to the complaint, he seeks to “illuminate the truth and obtain some measure of justice for Cedric’s death.”

“Cedric would be alive today if Sedgwick County executives and the Wichita police department followed the clear recommendations of the report issued by the Kansas Department of Corrections in March of 2016,” said Andrew M. Stroth, the lead attorney representing the family.

Sedgwick County’s Corrections Director Glenda Martens has described what happened as “tragic” but said that the corrections workers followed policy in restraining the teen. Wichita police have said they’ve been looking into the actions officers took when booking the teen.

No one has been criminally charged in the death. In January, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said the state’s “stand-your-ground” law&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wichita-kansas-a51f619b8b196987e74b046ac399680c">prevents him from bringing any charges</a>&nbsp;in Lofton’s death because staff members were protecting themselves.

The civil lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages in an amount to be determined by a jury. A news conference was planned for Monday at the Sedgwick County Courthouse to announce the filing. Teetz and community activists were expected to speak at the event.

The lawsuit contends that Lofton’s death was “presaged” by that KDOC inspection. The inspection report, a copy of which The Associated Press reviewed, noted systemic deficiencies at the juvenile facility, including its inability to handle children with mental health issues, its need for training on de-escalation techniques and management of risk.

The scathing inspection also cited the facility’s need for assistance in dealing with a Wichita Police Department “who too often dropped juveniles at JIAC’s door as a form of punishment while refusing any obligation to transport such juveniles for mental health treatment,” according to the court filing.

“Everything that happened in that report lines up precisely with what happened to Cedric,” Stroth said.

The lawsuit alleges that when confronted by questioning during intake at the facility about whether Lofton required medical treatment, Wichita&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-kansas-wichita-4a5aacdb2d18f75894034eef86ebd90a">police intentionally falsified</a>&nbsp;their response on a form and swore that he needed no such treatment. An intake official witnessed the police officer change his response on the form when the officer learned that would trigger an obligation to transport the teen for treatment.

“In other words, the officer prioritized his own convenience at the expense of this child’s welfare,” the lawsuit alleges. “And JIAC officials knowingly permitted it.”

The lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for Kansas accuses each of the five detention center employees of using excessive force, failing to intervene in other officer’s use of deadly force and being deliberately indifferent to Lofton’s serious medical needs.

The lawsuit also alleges excessive force by Sedgwick County, contending its policies, practices and customs allow such force against juveniles. It also accuses the county of failure to train employees on the proper use of force, de-escalation techniques and the management of juveniles with mental health issues.

The complaint further contends Wichita police officers were deliberately indifferent to Lofton’s medical needs and accuses the city of indifference in failing to train officers on dealing with juveniles and others in the throes of a mental health crisis.

In January, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said the state’s “stand-your-ground” law&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wichita-kansas-a51f619b8b196987e74b046ac399680c">prevents him from bringing any charges</a>&nbsp;in Lofton’s death because staff members were protecting themselves.The civil lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages in an amount to be determined by a jury. A news conference was planned for Monday at the Sedgwick County Courthouse to announce the filing. Teetz and community activists were expected to speak at the event.The lawsuit contends that Lofton’s death was “presaged” by that KDOC inspection. The inspection report, a copy of which The Associated Press reviewed, noted systemic deficiencies at the juvenile facility, including its inability to handle children with mental health issues, its need for training on de-escalation techniques and management of risk.The scathing inspection also cited the facility’s need for assistance in dealing with a Wichita Police Department “who too often dropped juveniles at JIAC’s door as a form of punishment while refusing any obligation to transport such juveniles for mental health treatment,” according to the court filing.“Everything that happened in that report lines up precisely with what happened to Cedric,” Stroth said.The lawsuit alleges that when confronted by questioning during intake at the facility about whether Lofton required medical treatment, Wichita&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-kansas-wichita-4a5aacdb2d18f75894034eef86ebd90a">police intentionally falsified</a>&nbsp;their response on a form and swore that he needed no such treatment. An intake official witnessed the police officer change his response on the form when the officer learned that would trigger an obligation to transport the teen for treatment.“In other words, the officer prioritized his own convenience at the expense of this child’s welfare,” the lawsuit alleges. “And JIAC officials knowingly permitted it.”The lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for Kansas accuses each of the five detention center employees of using excessive force, failing to intervene in other officer’s use of deadly force and being deliberately indifferent to Lofton’s serious medical needs.The lawsuit also alleges excessive force by Sedgwick County, contending its policies, practices and customs allow such force against juveniles. It also accuses the county of failure to train employees on the proper use of force, de-escalation techniques and the management of juveniles with mental health issues.The complaint further contends Wichita police officers were deliberately indifferent to Lofton’s medical needs and accuses the city of indifference in failing to train officers on dealing with juveniles and others in the throes of a mental health crisis.

Orletta Fern Brandt (Heide) Wiebe went to be with Jesus on June 8, 2022, at the age of 91. 

Orletta enjoyed music (never missing a chance to sing 4-part harmony with friends and family), sports (attending and streaming countless football, basketball and volleyball games), reading (bringing books to share with her grandchildren and also reading to challenge herself) traveling to see family (navigating many road trips with her sister, Joyce), gathering with friends, and sharing her faith in God.

Orletta’s life began on March 25, 1931, at Hillsboro, Kansas, born to William P. and Lillian (Bartel) Brandt. After seven days her mother died, leaving her father with two sons, ages two and three and a newborn (Orletta). She was received and nurtured in the home of Henry H. and Linda (Penner) Bartel until her father married Anna Ewert. Orletta’s new mom was loved dearly by all of her instant family. Soon another son, Franklin, joined the family, but lived only six months. Later three sisters, Pearl, Darlene, and Joyce and a brother John joined the family.&nbsp;

Orletta’s education began at Lehigh, Kansas. Because of family moves, she also attended three different rural schools. At 13 years of age she was baptized and joined the Johannestal Mennonite Church. After graduating from Hillsboro High School she attended Tabor College for one year. It was there that Orletta was challenged to serve as a volunteer under MCC. Her two years of service included one year at the office of the National Service Board for Religious Objectors in Washington, D.C. 

After her second year at MCC in Akron, PA, she entered nurses training at Bethel College and Bethel Deaconess Hospital, graduating in 1957.&nbsp; Her first work experience as a nurse was at Beatrice Mennonite Hospital, Beatrice, NE. Several years later she returned to Newton KS to work at Prairie View Mental Health Center. It was there she met and married Marvin Heide, a Mt. Lake, MN native, on September 4, 1960.

 After living in Mt. Lake for a year, where she worked in the Mennonite Hospital, they moved to Hillsboro, KS, and were blessed with four children: Jerold, Carolyn, Dennis and Kendall. 

During the next 10 years Orletta worked at a clinic and at Salem Hospital in Hillsboro.&nbsp;They lived in Beatrice, NE, from 1972-1974, where Orletta worked in a mental health clinic.&nbsp; In 1973 they moved back to Hillsboro where Marvin became owner and operator of Hillsboro Equipment, Inc. 

They were active members of Trinity Mennonite Church, serving as deacons and youth leaders. Orletta was chosen as the first woman deacon in their church, and with God’s grace, was able to minister along with others. She returned to Prairie View, working in the children’s program.&nbsp;

In 1979 Orletta’s husband, Marvin, passed away from cancer. She became a single mother of an 11, 14, 16 and 17 year-old. A year or so later she began working for the Marion County Health Dept., later becoming the director. She proudly saw all four children graduate from Bethel College.

Through a mutual friend, Orletta was introduced to John Wiebe. John lived and worked in Winnipeg, Manitoba as conference minister in the Conference of Mennonites in Manitoba. Following the leading of their hearts (and a sense of God’s leading) and family support, John and Orletta were married on March 19, 1988. 

The following 22 years Orletta lived in Winnipeg, where she also was received by three stepchildren, Gerald, Barry and Cindy, and one grandchild, Alex. 

There Orletta chose to join the Bethel Mennonite Church, serving in a variety of ways. For a number of years she was in a group that met to pray and contemplate once a week, a very enriching experience which continued to challenge her prayer life.

Orletta was encouraged to enter the pastoral care ministry under the umbrella of the Conference of Mennonites in Manitoba. Following a year of training and classes Orletta served for 10 years in ministering at St. Boniface Hospital.

In 2009, John passed away and Orletta moved back to Kansas, to live at Kidron Bethel Village, joining many friends from her past and gaining many new ones. Living there offered many opportunities to grow spiritually, joining a prayer group and numerous book discussions. Orletta said “Reading, cooking, and traveling were some of my favorite activities. Having been blessed with relatively good health, I daily pray with thankfulness. Great is your faithfulness, God.”

Orletta was preceded in death by her parents William, Lillian (Bartel) and Anna (Ewert) Brandt, two husbands, Marvin Heide and John F. Wiebe, brother Eldon and wife Anny Brandt, sister-in-law Grace (Ewert) Brandt, brothers-in-law Bill Colhoff, John McConnel, sister Darlene and husband Lewis Haney, and brother-in-law Richard Barkman; of the Heide family, Lavina (Heide) and John Wall and Robert Heide. 

Wiebe family predeceased are Henry and Louise Wiebe, Hilda and George Ewert, Ann and Dan Hildebrandt, Ed and Nora Heinrichs, Dave Friesen and stepdaughter, Cynthia Hernandez, Winnipeg.

Orletta is survived by her children&nbsp; Jerold and Donna (Funk) Heide, Wichita, KS, Carolyn and Ray (Henderson), Charlotte, NC, Dennis and Lorna (Innes) Heide, Orlando, FL, and Kendall and Carrie (Dalke) Heide, Wichita, KS, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild, stepsons Gerald Wiebe and Barry Wiebe, four stepgrandsons, and three stepgranddaughters, brothers Raymond and Rosie (Goering), N. Newton, KS, and John and Donita (Chastain) Brandt, Yankton, SD, and sisters Pearl McConnel, Sandpoint, ID and Joyce Barkman, Hillsboro, KS, of the Heide family, Darrel and Susan (Howes) Heide, Highland, CA, Don and Jan (Frank) Heide, Tuscan, AZ, Jerry and Kathy Heide, Colorado Springs, CO, and sister-in-law, Norma Heide, Hutchinson, KS. 

Wiebe survivors are Peter and Rheta Mae Wiebe, Glendale, AZ, Mary (Wiebe) Friesen, Winkler, MB, Jake and Linda (Wiebe) Wall, Abbotsford, BC and Len and Phyllis Wiebe, Winnipeg, also many nieces and nephews from both sides of the family.

Following an investigation by the Wichita Exploited and Missing Children's unit, officers arrested Rierson during a traffic stop on May 27, according to the Sedgwick Booking records.

During the investigation, illegal narcotics were located. The driver, Ashley N. Dixon, 27, of Topekaand the passenger, Jake R. Ludlum, 28,&nbsp; of Wakarusa, were arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Dixon was being held on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license and operating a vehicle with an expired registration.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — As the nation awaits a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court regarding a Mississippi law that calls for banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, LGBTQ advocates are pushing to codify protections for same-sex marriage in states throughout the country.

Since the leak of a draft opinion alluded to the court potentially overturning abortion rights, concerns have grown over whether justices could next move to reverse other decisions that rely on the “right to privacy” that the court outlined in the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion nationwide nearly 50 years ago.

The leaked opinion authored by Justice Samuel Alito, a member of the court’s 6-3 conservative majority, explicitly says the decision concerns abortion and no other rights.

But legal experts&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-biden-us-supreme-court-right-to-privacy-6e1d7ee2a6d26bef09392971fd4948b5">have speculated</a>&nbsp;that similar logic could be used to reverse other decisions, including Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 case in which the court ruled same-sex marriage bans unconstitutional.

“We need states across this country to say, ‘We see you. You exist. You deserve respect. And you deserve protections, because your relationship is no different than any other,’” said Jim Obergefell, the plaintiff in the landmark case, who is now a Democratic candidate trying to become an Ohio state lawmaker.

Before the Supreme Court struck down bans and legalized same-sex marriage, 31 states had enacted laws banning same-sex couples from marrying. The laws have not been in effect since courts ruled them unconstitutional, but they remain on the books in most of those states.

For years they were considered defunct and attracted little attention, but the shifting composition of the Supreme Court has led several states to remove them from their statutes and constitutions. Virginia and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/couples-weddings-elections-reno-us-supreme-court-967b5c868e4f3ec91a3a66115eb8e556">Nevada</a>&nbsp;repealed their defunct bans in 2020 and New Jersey codified marriage rights for same-sex couples in 2021.

“We should all be worried about our other fundamental rights that have been obtained through the courts over the last decade or so,” said Utah state Sen. Derek Kitchen, a Democrat and the state’s only LGBTQ lawmaker said on the steps of the statehouse on Tuesday.

Kitchen and New Jersey Assemblyman Don Guardian, a Republican, want more states to remove the same-sex marriage bans from their laws and codify rights for LGBTQ couples to prepare for a worst-case scenario in which the Supreme Court decides to overturn the 2015 same-sex marriage decision.

“I would very concerned for any state that doesn’t take up the same type of legislation now before the court rules (on abortion) so they can protect their LGBTQ+ residents that have gotten married,” said Guardian, who is gay.

Though the New Jersey law passed with bipartisan support, similar moves to codify same-sex marriage rights could face uphill battles in Republican-led legislatures that have begun to revisit LGBTQ issues with newfound zeal.

Some have moved to limit LGBTQ subject matter from school curriculums and regulate healthcare for transgender youth. At least a dozen, including Utah, have passed laws limiting participation in sports for transgender youth.

Kitchen likened the state same-sex marriage bans to “trigger laws” that many Republican-led states have enacted to prepare for a scenario in which Roe v. Wade is overturned and states can resume limiting abortions.

Kitchen hasn’t talked to the Republicans who lead the Utah Legislature, but said he’s optimistic same-sex marriage has been embraced widely enough in Utah that codifying protections for LGBTQ couples will win widespread support.

“Utah is a family friendly state. We support families we know how important it is to provide stable units for children to grow,” he said.

Kitchen added: “We have already decided as a community that marriage equality is a value that we care about. So yes, this is something that does have a chance of passing in Utah.”

Derek Kitchen, a Democrat and the state’s only LGBTQ lawmaker said on the steps of the statehouse on Tuesday.Kitchen and New Jersey Assemblyman Don Guardian, a Republican, want more states to remove the same-sex marriage bans from their laws and codify rights for LGBTQ couples to prepare for a worst-case scenario in which the Supreme Court decides to overturn the 2015 same-sex marriage decision.“I would very concerned for any state that doesn’t take up the same type of legislation now before the court rules (on abortion) so they can protect their LGBTQ+ residents that have gotten married,” said Guardian, who is gay.Though the New Jersey law passed with bipartisan support, similar moves to codify same-sex marriage rights could face uphill battles in Republican-led legislatures that have begun to revisit LGBTQ issues with newfound zeal.Some have moved to limit LGBTQ subject matter from school curriculums and regulate healthcare for transgender youth. At least a dozen, including Utah, have passed laws limiting participation in sports for transgender youth.Kitchen likened the state same-sex marriage bans to “trigger laws” that many Republican-led states have enacted to prepare for a scenario in which Roe v. Wade is overturned and states can resume limiting abortions.Kitchen hasn’t talked to the Republicans who lead the Utah Legislature, but said he’s optimistic same-sex marriage has been embraced widely enough in Utah that codifying protections for LGBTQ couples will win widespread support.“Utah is a family friendly state. We support families we know how important it is to provide stable units for children to grow,” he said.Kitchen added: “We have already decided as a community that marriage equality is a value that we care about. So yes, this is something that does have a chance of passing in Utah.”

Same-sex marriage advocates push for post-Roe protections

ROSEMONT, Ill.&nbsp;— It was the battle of the two number one teams in the American Association, the Kansas City Monarchs (18-7) in the West and the Chicago Dogs (17-8) in the East. After a slow start and the Dogs keeping a steady 1-0 through four innings, the Monarchs hit their stride, taking the first bite out of the Dogs with a final of 10-2.

Chicago got on the board early in the first inning with a lead off double to left from Charlie Tilson, followed two batters later by a K.C. Hobson double to take an early 1-0 lead.

Chicago’s starting pitcher, LHP Shane Barringer, dealt three consecutive one, two, three innings, leaving the Monarchs off the bases for the first 40 minutes of the game.

In the fifth inning, Matt Adams and Pete Kozma both drew walks to put runners at first and second. &nbsp;Alexis Olmeda then sent a ball down the third base line for a two-RBI double, allowing Kansas City to take the lead at 2-1. Joel Booker kept the inning going with a single up the middle, bringing in Olmeda to extend the lead to 3-1.

Monarchs starting pitcher Matt Hall (4-1) helped keep the 3-1 lead in the fifth by striking out the side. Hall kept dealing in the sixth with two consecutive strikeouts, ending the inning with one more, bringing him to 10 Ks to end the night.

Gaby Guerrero hit a double, followed by a David Thompson single to start the top of the sixth inning. With two outs and a pitching change from Chicago, Casey Gillaspie launched a three-run home run off right-hander Ryan Clark to give the Monarchs an impressive lead at 6-1 in the sixth.

In the bottom of the seventh, Chicago’s Harrison Smith reached first base on a single to center before a Connor Kopach double brought in Smith, cutting into the Monarchs lead at 6-2. Monarchs left hander Jacob Lindgren escaped a bases-loaded seventh with a key strikeout.&nbsp;

Pete Kozma reached first base in the top of the eighth before Olmeda brought him in with an RBI double. Joel Booker booked it around the bases for an RBI triple. Guerrero ended the inning with an RBI single of his own, bringing the Monarchs lead to 9-2.

In the ninth, the Monarchs kept rounding the bases as Jan Hernandez got to first after a hit-by-a-pitch. Gillaspie walked before Pete Kozma hit one for a fielder's choice, bringing in Hernandez for an RBI, making the final score 10-2.

Lindgren controlled the last two innings with a final line of 2.2 IP, 4H, 1R and 5 strikeouts.

The first openly transgender lawmaker in Kansas will not seek another term in the Kansas House.

Rep.
 Stephanie Byers, a Wichita Democrat, is also the first transgender 
Native American woman elected to a state legislature, and one of few 
Native Americans in the Kansas House or Senate.

The Kansas 
Secretary of State’s Office said on Friday that Byers has withdrawn as a
 candidate for Kansas House of Representatives District 86.

 wife and I have aging parents with major health issues and we are 
placing them first. Today I am withdrawing my bid for re-election so we
