JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspects on a variety of charges after a weekend traffic stop.

Just after 8 P.M. Saturday, a sheriff's deputy stopped a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer near 134th and U.S. Highway 75 for an alleged traffic violation, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Further investigation into the traffic stop led to the arrest of Rusty James Potts, 32, of Mayetta, Simone Alexandra Noriega, 26, of Mayetta and Cass Ellen Cadue, 26, of Mayetta.

  Potts was booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of interference with law enforcement and two counts of aggravated endangerment of a child.

Noriega was booked into the Jail on requested charges of interference with law enforcement, two counts of aggravated endangerment of a child, no child restraint seat, and driving while suspended.

Cadue was booked into the Jail on a requested charge of possession of cocaine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and drug paraphernalia.

Kan. suspects were traveling with kids, cocaine, no car seats

Just before 6p.m. July 22, police were sent to the area of NE Seward Avenue and NE Grattan Street Topeka after reports that a man who had been stabbed, according to Lt. Ron Ekis.

First responders found a victim who was transported by ambulance to a locate hospital for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.&nbsp;

As a result of the investigation police arrested Thomas J. McNorton, 29, of Topeka booked him into to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Burglary, Domestic Battery and Battery.

Kansas man jailed after knife fight sends man to the hospital

IRVING, Texas – One of the most decorated players in Kansas men’s basketball history, Ochai Agbaji can add 2021-22 Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year to his list of honors as the conference announced its athletes of the year awards Monday. Oklahoma softball player Jocelyn Alo is the league’s 2021-22 female athlete of the year.

Nominees are submitted by Big 12 institutions and selected based on athletic performance during the 2021-22 school year by a media panel. Nominees must be in good academic standing.

“What a great honor to be named this among all the athletes in the Big 12,” Agbaji said. “It is humbling to be listed among Heisman Trophy winners, other national champions and great athletes. This would not be possible without my teammates, coaches and the KU support staff. We had a great run to the national title and it took a lot of people to get there, not just me.”

Since the league started in 1996-97, Agbaji is the fourth Jayhawk to be named Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year, with all four being men’s basketball players – Jacque Vaughn in 1997, Nick Collison in 2003 and Frank Mason III, who was a co-recipient in 2017. Historically, Kansas’ Danny Manning (1988) and Rex Walters (1993) were Big Eight Conference Male Athletes of the Year, making Agbaji the sixth KU men’s basketball player to earn the honor. Overall, Agbaji is the ninth Kansas conference athlete of the year honoree joining the aforementioned and Nolan Cromwell, football (1977), Lynette Woodard, women’s basketball (1981) and Tammy Thomas, women’s swimming (1983).

Last month, Agbaji was selected No. 14 by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2022 NBA Draft, becoming the KU’s 18th lottery selection and the 12th in the Bill Self era. The Final Four and Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Agbaji was a 2022 Consensus All-America First Team honoree, collecting All-America first-team nods from the NABC, Associated Press, The Sporting News and USBWA. The Kansas City, Missouri, native is Kansas’ 31st all-time Consensus All-America First Team selection, which is more than any other school. Agbaji was named the unanimous 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with an average of 18.8 points per game.

A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji has etched his name into the Kansas records book. He set the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made at 53. Agbaji concluded his KU career ranked 15th on the KU career scoring list with 1,652 points, fourth on the three-point field goals made (250), fourth on three-point field goals attempted (670) and ninth in minutes played (3,978).

KU's Agbaji Named Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect and three teens in connection with a high speed chase in a reported stolen 2010 Ford Escape.

Just after 8:30p.m. July 20, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center&nbsp;received notification that the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) was in pursuit of a stolen vehicle, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

Shawnee County deputies assisted KHP near 24 Highway and North Kansas Avenue. As that pursuit entered neighborhoods, that pursuit was terminated.

Shortly after, the stolen SUV was located again near NW Goodyear Road and 24 Highway. Deputies attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, the driver refused, initiating a subsequent pursuit. The suspect left 24 Highway and proceeded northbound onto NW Goodyear Road. At NW 25th Street, the suspect made a U-turn and continued southbound towards 24 Highway. The suspect continued eastbound on 24 Highway then southbound on NW Topeka Boulevard. 

At NW Studer Street, the suspect vehicle struck a concrete curb and Toyota RAV4 and suffered a flat tire which led to the end of the pursuit near NW Paramore Street.

At 9pm, the driver, Dominic Romano Gale Clark, 19, of Kansas City, Kan., was taken into custody. The black 2010 Ford Escape was stolen out of the City of Topeka. 

Clark was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of felony flee and elude, three counts of aggravated endangering a child, possession of stolen property, reckless driving, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding, operating a vehicle without a valid license and failure to maintain a single lane. Three 17-year-old passengers were also in the vehicle.

Kansas man captured after high-speed chase in stolen SUV

ABILENE - The next Eisenhower Library Lunch &amp; Learn program is scheduled to look at the Eisenhower presidency.

Ike Lunch & Learn: Assessing the Eisenhower presidency

On July 24, 1915, the SS Eastland, a passenger ship carrying more than 2,500 people, rolled onto its side while docked at the Clark Street Bridge on the Chicago River; an estimated 844 people died in the disaster.

In 1847, Mormon leader Brigham Young and his followers arrived in the Great Salt Lake Valley in present-day Utah.

In 1866, Tennessee became the first state to be readmitted to the Union after the Civil War.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged criminal threat after an arrest&nbsp;

Sheriff patrol deputies were conducting surveillance in an attempt to locate 45-year-old Dahlkestiere D. Eichelberger of Topeka regarding a criminal threat investigation, according Deputy Abigail Christian.

Shortly before 6p.m. Friday, Sheriff Brian Hill and deputies located Eichelberger walking in the Walmart parking lot at 2600 NW Rochester Road. 

Deputies took Eichelberger taken into custody without incident just before he entered the store.

Eichelberger was in possession of a short barrel semi-automatic rifle and ammunition. The rifle was on a sling, concealed under his clothing.

A subsequent search warrant was conducted on Eichelberger’s residence in the 3400 block of NW Country Lane.

Eichelberger was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of felony criminal threat.

“Making It Work” is currently on display at the <a target="_blank" href="https://lawrenceartscenter.org/">Lawrence Arts Center</a>.
 The exhibit takes a deeper look into the generative processes of 
artists as parents and how familial bonds inform their work.&nbsp; The featured artists include <a target="_blank" href="https://pilaraguero.com/">Pilar Agüero-Esparza</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://albertoaguilar.org/">Alberto Aguilar</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.christadonner.com/">Christa Donner</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.lisehallerbaggesen.org/">Lise Haller Baggesen</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cararomerophotography.com/home">Cara Romero</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="http://blacklunchtable.com/about/founders/">Jina Valentine</a>.

The show “brings together six 
contemporary U.S. artists who are artists and parents who make that 
relationship visible in their work,” said Maria Velasco, a professor at the University of Kansas’ <a target="_blank" href="https://art.ku.edu/">Department of Visual Art</a>, along with being a mother and artist herself.
 “It is part of their dynamic, their conception and their making. So 
from that point of view, it is really unique. Because we’re used to 
having to choose between one or the other. The culture tells us that you
 must be one or the other. That if you are a good parent you can’t be a 
good artist and if you are a good artist you can’t be a parent. So you 
really have to challenge that belief. And still deal with the 
difficulties in existing in that kind of juncture.”&nbsp;

The show was co-curated by Velasco and Rachel Epp Buller, professor of visual arts and design at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bethelks.edu/">Bethel College</a>.&nbsp;

When asked about the artists chosen, 
Velasco said that, “For us, from the beginning, the choice was based on 
what we call generative practices, which are ways in which we look at 
processes, collaboration, conversations, activities that may take place 
normally internally, in terms of the making of the work, but also with 
the existing community.&nbsp;

“We were looking at how those 
processes materialize into some kind of work. It’s not so much the 
old-fashioned way of making work, where you are thinking about an object
 on the wall that is self contained. This is looking at how we make work
 from a different platform to begin with.”

Featured artist Agüero-Esparza presents a
 wall installation with three-dimensional elements in acrylic and wood 
titled: “Multicultural Crayon: White, Apricot, Peach, Tan, Mahogany, 
Burnt Sienna, Sepia, Black — What Color Are You?” This piece converses 
with another piece, “Dance &amp; Conversations: Castings” Both include 
casts of her daughter’s feet at different ages. At age 10, the 
conversation is about skin tone. The artist uses a crayon skin tone 
color palette to have discussions about race.&nbsp;

This conversation began with her 
daughter coming home after school, asking why people don’t identify with
 the peach color that most white people consider skin color. Agüero-Esparza also connects this work with her upbringing in Mexico. Her family had a shoe shop that made huaraches. The tint of the leather strands are represented in the base of the casted feet, dancing at age 17.&nbsp;

“Since an early age, she (Agüero-Esparza) has
 been involved in seeing and being a part of that process,” Velasco 
said. “That process is stripes of leather that are tinted in different 
forms and has carried that stylistic choice in her work. The story 
behind this work is intergenerational. A story she is having with her 
parents and her daughter. When you become a parent that lineage becomes 
so apparent.”&nbsp;

Donner’s interactive piece, “A Portal
 Is Opening,” is also an intergenerational work in which the viewer is 
projected into the future. It has a QR code and map that will send you 
to a spot in South Park by a bench, where you can listen to a letter 
that a child from 2226 telling us about extinction and species that have
 disappeared.

&nbsp;“This is a conversation on 
sustainability and how unaware we are of the damage that we are 
creating. The fact that our children will inherit that world and life 
doesn’t stop when we stop. Having kids makes that more obvious than 
ever.” Velasco said. “We are connecting with a child from the future. It
 makes obvious these political issues in a poetic way. The piece is 
narrated by the daughter of the artist. It is a way of collaborating 
with your kids.”&nbsp;

Velasco continued: “It is not just a 
sentimental or cute thing. You are having a conversation with a 
legitimate human being that is a small person, because of course, it’s 
cute because kids are cute, but that is not what the point is. But when 
you are engaged as a parent who is also an artist, and you are having 
conversations with your kids that are very serious like this one about 
race, sustainability or others.”

Another conversation presented in the show addresses racial violence against Black men. It’s titled “Testimony.”

Valentine was inspired by her 
inability to process the news about the shooting deaths of young Black 
men. The piece is difficult to absorb. It includes excerpts of news 
reports about the deaths of Black sons. You can only read a little bit 
at a time. In this work, Valentine used an ink that eats the paper away.
 Possibly she’s commenting about erasure, whitewashing, or an attempt to
 remove a reality that should not have taken place. Perhaps she is 
facilitating time being pressed forward, to a point where these stories 
may not exist.&nbsp;

Baggesens describes her work 
“Mothernism” as “a nomadic tent camp, audio installation and a book 
dedicated to staking out and making speakable the “mother-shaped hole in
 contemporary art discourse.”&nbsp;

In this created space, you can listen
 to music and read books that Baggesens has selected. The place projects
 a sense of sanctuary, contemplation and isolation all at once.&nbsp;

The familial bonds displayed 
throughout this show magnify the works of all these artists. Each one 
creates simultaneously as an artist and parent. There is no delineation 
in the work that has to be done and the conversations that need to be 
had. Creating art that addresses issues affecting both parents and 
children is not only good parenting, but important artistry. “Making it 
work” exemplifies the power of artists as parents with real profundity.&nbsp;

“Making It Work” will run until July 
30. A curator’s INSIGHT Art Talk will occur July 28, at 7 p.m.. This 
will include a presentation of Epp Buller’s book “<a target="_blank" href="https://demeterpress.org/books/inappropriate-bodies-art-design-and-maternity/">Inappropriate Bodies: Art, Design, Maternity”</a> and the first local screening of Velasco’s award-winning documentary “<a target="_blank" href="https://www.mariavelascostudio.com/all-of-me-artistsmothers">All of Me: Artists+Mothers</a>.”

A closing reception will be held July 29 at the Lawrence Arts Center from 5 to 9 p.m.

conversation is about skin tone. The artist uses a crayon skin tone 
color palette to have discussions about race.&nbsp;This conversation began with her 
daughter coming home after school, asking why people don’t identify with
 the peach color that most white people consider skin color. Agüero-Esparza also connects this work with her upbringing in Mexico. Her family had a shoe shop that made huaraches. The tint of the leather strands are represented in the base of the casted feet, dancing at age 17.&nbsp;“Since an early age, she (Agüero-Esparza) has
 been involved in seeing and being a part of that process,” Velasco 
said. “That process is stripes of leather that are tinted in different 
forms and has carried that stylistic choice in her work. The story 
behind this work is intergenerational. A story she is having with her 
parents and her daughter. When you become a parent that lineage becomes 
so apparent.”&nbsp;Donner’s interactive piece, “A Portal
 Is Opening,” is also an intergenerational work in which the viewer is 
projected into the future. It has a QR code and map that will send you 
to a spot in South Park by a bench, where you can listen to a letter 
that a child from 2226 telling us about extinction and species that have
 disappeared.&nbsp;“This is a conversation on 
sustainability and how unaware we are of the damage that we are 
creating. The fact that our children will inherit that world and life 
doesn’t stop when we stop. Having kids makes that more obvious than 
ever.” Velasco said. “We are connecting with a child from the future. It
 makes obvious these political issues in a poetic way. The piece is 
narrated by the daughter of the artist. It is a way of collaborating 
with your kids.”&nbsp;Velasco continued: “It is not just a 
sentimental or cute thing. You are having a conversation with a 
legitimate human being that is a small person, because of course, it’s 
cute because kids are cute, but that is not what the point is. But when 
you are engaged as a parent who is also an artist, and you are having 
conversations with your kids that are very serious like this one about 
race, sustainability or others.”Another conversation presented in the show addresses racial violence against Black men. It’s titled “Testimony.”Valentine was inspired by her 
inability to process the news about the shooting deaths of young Black 
men. The piece is difficult to absorb. It includes excerpts of news 
reports about the deaths of Black sons. You can only read a little bit 
at a time. In this work, Valentine used an ink that eats the paper away.
 Possibly she’s commenting about erasure, whitewashing, or an attempt to
 remove a reality that should not have taken place. Perhaps she is 
facilitating time being pressed forward, to a point where these stories 
may not exist.&nbsp;<figure>

“Mothernism” as “a nomadic tent camp, audio installation and a book 
dedicated to staking out and making speakable the “mother-shaped hole in
 contemporary art discourse.”&nbsp;In this created space, you can listen
 to music and read books that Baggesens has selected. The place projects
 a sense of sanctuary, contemplation and isolation all at once.&nbsp;The familial bonds displayed 
throughout this show magnify the works of all these artists. Each one 
creates simultaneously as an artist and parent. There is no delineation 
in the work that has to be done and the conversations that need to be 
had. Creating art that addresses issues affecting both parents and 
children is not only good parenting, but important artistry. “Making it 
work” exemplifies the power of artists as parents with real profundity.&nbsp;“Making It Work” will run until July 
30. A curator’s INSIGHT Art Talk will occur July 28, at 7 p.m.. This

KS poet laureate: Exhibit unites worlds of artistry, family

FARGO, N.D.&nbsp;— The Kansas City Monarchs (39-21) held on to defeat their division rival Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (40-20) with a 6-4 final score.

 Alexis Olmeda propelled the offense with a three-run shot in the sixth, but the RedHawks did not go down without a fight. The Monarchs are now just one game back of the RedHawks for the first place spot in the West Division.&nbsp;

Kansas City has had great success when scoring in the opening frame, and they did just so on Friday night in Fargo. Darnell Sweeney did his part by opening up the game with a leadoff single on the fourth pitch of the game. A passed ball allowed Sweeney to coast into second base. The two hole, Kevin Santa kept things going by singling and driving in Sweeney to get the Monarchs on the board first (1-0). Kansas City now has a record of 19-7 when scoring in the first inning.&nbsp;

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks did not respond until the bottom of the second inning to make it 2-1. Sam Dexter hit a solo shot for the hometown RedHawks that got the fans on their feet. The home run would be the first of four between the two teams on the night.&nbsp;

After the early runs, both starting pitchers went on to toss three consecutive scoreless frames. In that period from the third through the fifth Lewis Thorpe tossed five of his seven strikeouts. Fargo’s starter Peyton Wigginton sat one batter down on strikes each of the three innings to keep the score at 2-1 in favor of the Monarchs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The game was flipped after it shifted from a pitchers duel to the Alexis Olmeda show. Olmeda was facing a new arm out of the Redhawks bullpen in the sixth, but that did not phase him as the catcher stepped up to the plate and blasted a three-run home run on a 2-2 count to blow the game open (6-1).&nbsp;

A few moments later the RedHawks kept the long ball show going when Rymer Liriano hit his sixth home run of the season off of Lewis Thorpe (6-2).

The book was closed on Lewis Thorpe’s night in the home half of the seventh inning when he was replaced by LHP Jordan Martinson. Thorpe had a terrific outing and earned himself the quality start by tallying 6IP, 7H, 2R, 2BB, and 7K. The Australian lefty has collected 29 strikeouts in his last four starts.&nbsp;

Jordan Martinson's first inning out of the bullpen did not go as planned, but he limited the damage after being helped out by his first baseman Casey Gillaspie. Gillaspie completed the 8-6-3 putout when he tagged Evan Alexander out in a run down. Two batters later, Leobaldo Pina singled to cut the deficit down to three (6-3). Martinson stayed with it by ending the inning with a huge strikeout against the highly feared John Silviano of the RedHawks.&nbsp;

In the eighth inning Jeremy Rhoades made his season debut for the Monarchs on his first day back with the team. Rhoades was a member of last season's championship team. Rhoades returned to the roster after spending the time playing down in the Mexican league for the Mariachis de Guadalajara.&nbsp;

The RedHawks gave Rhoades a very warm welcome back to the league by sending his third pitch over the outfield wall to tighten the score at 6-4. The home run for Fargo served to be Liriano’s second blast of the game. Rhoades was able to give the defense a double-play ball and then a strikeout to end the threat.&nbsp;

In the final inning the Monarchs went down in order, but the RedHawks got their leadoff runner aboard via walk. The closer Jameson McGrane settled in with a huge strikeout. The next batter would pop-up to David Thompson and bring the tying runner Jordan Garr to the plate with just one out left in the game. McGrane filled up the strike zone with the game on the line, pounding the mitt on the final pitch of the game to clinch the victory for the Monarchs.

Monarchs pick up road win over Fargo-Moorhead

Dale Jost (born Marvin Dale Jost) was born to Marvin Gerhard Jost and Rosella Franz Jost on June 28, 1944 in Reedley, CA. Dale grew up in a loving home and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior when he was a teenager. Dale attended Hillsboro High School and later Tabor College in Hillsboro, KS. In college he played basketball, studied finance, and worked on wheat harvest crews in the summers.

While at Tabor he met the love of his life Katheryn Shirley Dick from Mountain Lake, MN. Upon graduating in 1966, Dale started his career in finance with the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Later that year, Dale and Shirley were married on November 25 in Mountain Lake, MN. In 1974, they welcomed twin sons Travis and Bruce into the family. Dale’s professional career with KDOT (his sole employer) spanned 42 years, 6 months, and 6 days. He valued stewarding government resources to better the roadways of the state of Kansas. Dale and Shirley were longtime members of Cornerstone Community Church in Topeka, KS up until their relocation to Hesston, KS in 2014. While living in Hesston they enjoyed meeting new friends, reconnecting with seasoned friends and being closer to their children and grandchildren. In retirement, Dale enjoyed cooking, good coffee, discovering fine foods, organizing his records, leading the family book club, and attending any and all grandchildren activities. In June of 2022, he traveled with Shirley to visit their son Travis in Burundi, Africa. Dale was thrilled to see Travis in his environment and while there received the joy of Christ through the Burundi people.

After an accidental fall, he had a successful surgery but succumbed to complications during the recovery. He died on June 22, 2022. A private burial service was conducted at French Creek Cemetery near Hillsboro, KS.

A Celebration of Life service will be at Ridgepoint Church in Wichita, KS on August 13, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. 

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts can be made to Tabor College, Multiply, or Mennonite Central Committee. Dale is survived by his wife Shirley, sons Travis and Bruce (Kimberlee), granddaughters Ella and Talia, sisters Loretta Neufeld (Gaylen) and Cheryl McJunkin (Larry), sisters-in-law Colleen Jost, Marion Graumann, and Verla Dick, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Rosella Jost, by his brother Jim Jost, and his brothers-in-law Don Graumann and Robert Dick.

Dale grew up in a loving home and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior when he was a teenager. Dale attended Hillsboro High School and later Tabor College in Hillsboro, KS. In college he played basketball, studied finance, and worked on wheat harvest crews in the summers. While at Tabor he met the love of his life Katheryn Shirley Dick from Mountain Lake, MN. Upon graduating in 1966, Dale started his career in finance with the Kansas Department of Transportation. Later that year, Dale and Shirley were married on November 25 in Mountain Lake, MN. In 1974, they welcomed twin sons Travis and Bruce into the family. Dale’s professional career with KDOT (his sole employer) spanned 42 years, 6 months, and 6 days. He valued stewarding government resources to better the roadways of the state of Kansas. WICHITA – With extremely high temperatures expected to continue across Kansas during the next several days, the&nbsp;<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d9-70%400-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=566037&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">National Weather Service</a>&nbsp;forecasts a dangerous heatwave will impact much of the United States.

More than 100 million Americans are currently located in areas with excessive heat warnings and advisories.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“As temperatures continue to spike across the region, commuters and travelers need to be aware of the added stress high temperatures place not only on the human body, but on vehicles, as well,” said Shawn Steward, spokesman for AAA Kansas.

With the current heatwave anticipated to last into the middle of next week in our area, AAA Kansas is reminding motorists to take a few precautions to prepare their vehicles - and themselves before hitting the road.

“Whether you are heading across the country or across town, motorists need to make sure their vehicles are road-ready and up-to-date on maintenance,” said Jon Burgett, manager of emergency roadside service fleet operations with AAA Kansas. &nbsp;“The effect this kind of weather can have on your car is cumulative.”

Preventive summer vehicle maintenance tips

●Batteries&nbsp;- Heat kills batteries. Car batteries rarely give advance notice before they fail. Batteries three-to-five years old are most likely to succumb to extreme temperatures.

●Tires&nbsp;- Keep your tires at normal pressure. Driving on under-inflated tires can cause them to overheat and increase the likelihood of a blowout. This problem becomes even more of a concern when road temperatures are extremely high. Tires should be inflated to the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer – not the number molded into the tire sidewall. Recommended tire pressures can be found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker normally located on the driver’s door jamb or the inside of the glove compartment door.

●Fluids&nbsp;- When fluid levels are low, the possibility of overheating increases. Drivers should check all vehicle fluids including motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid to ensure they are filled to the appropriate levels.

●Coolant&nbsp;- Motorists should check the coolant level in the overflow tank and top off as needed. If the engine is cool, check the level in the radiator as well. Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot, you can be seriously scalded. Have the cooling system flushed and new coolant installed when recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Even with proper preventive maintenance, summer breakdowns can still occur. That’s why having a “Plan B” for vehicle breakdowns is critical.

From Sunday through Tuesday, AAA responded to nearly 1,000 emergency roadside assistance calls in Kansas alone, including 17% for battery-related problems, 14% for tire-related issues, and more than 500 calls (55% of all calls) for towing due to engine failures and other issues.

AAA Kansas emergency roadside assistance calls during the Sunday through Tuesday period this year were up 24% compared to the same dates in 2021.

AAA offers these tips to keep drivers safe and vehicles operating in the warm days ahead:

●Prepare before hitting the road.&nbsp;During the summer months, drivers should carry an emergency kit, including a fully charged cellphone and charger, extra water and snacks, jumper cables and a flashlight. Drivers should also have coolant with them. “Just as motorists place an emergency kit in their cars during winter months, they should do the same in the summer,” AAA Kansas’ Steward said. “With extreme temperatures, such as the ones we are experiencing, an inconvenience can quickly escalate to an emergency if motorists are not prepared.”

 ●Spare your battery.&nbsp;If traffic is not moving, do not use the accessory setting, listen to the radio or use any other devices that could drain the car battery.

●Avoid overheating.&nbsp;While running the air conditioner, drivers should keep an eye on the control panel. If the vehicle starts to overheat, shut it off immediately and open the hood to allow the engine to cool off. The vehicle may need to be off for a minimum of 45 minutes.

●Keep air flowing.&nbsp;If you cannot operate the vehicle’s air conditioning, open windows on both sides of the car to cross ventilate.

●Seek shade when parked. Carry a windshield sunshade in your vehicle to provide some protection from the sun when your vehicle is parked.

●Stay safe during standstill traffic. Staying in your vehicle is usually the safest option. If, however, the heat becomes too oppressive and traffic shows no signs of moving, consider seeking shelter in the shade. If there are trees or an overpass nearby that would provide shade, take a break and give your body time to cool off, but stay safely away from traffic.

“While the overall lifespan of vehicles has increased over the years, AAA research has shown that older vehicles are four times more likely than newer vehicles to encounter a problem serious enough to require a tow to a repair facility,” said AAA Kansas’ Burgett.

At the first sign of a mechanical problem, motorists should try to safely move their vehicle as far off the shoulder or road as possible and turn on their flashing hazard lights. Distracted drivers often disregard vulnerable vehicles on roadsides and those people inside them.&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition to wreaking havoc on your car, high temperatures can quickly claim lives. On a 95-degree day, a car can heat up to over 180-degrees.

Nationwide, more than 1,000 children have died in hot cars since 1990 - that’s an average of 38 fatalities per year. Studies have shown about 56% of child hot car deaths were caused by adults forgetting the children, and 26% of victims were playing in an unattended vehicle.

“In the summer heat, a vehicle’s interior can reach lethal temperatures very quickly. In fact, a car can heat up by 20 degrees in as little as 10 minutes and become deadly, causing a child’s internal organs to shut down if left unattended inside,” said AAA Kansas’ Steward.

AAA: Drivers urged to avoid meltdown, breakdown during heatwave
