Abagail Eklund, Age 25, passed away on June 17, 2025, in Salina, Kansas.

Abagail, also known as Abby, went to Southeast of Saline for her high school career and then went on to attend Fort Hays State University.

From the moment she could walk, Abagail was known for her strong will, bright spirit, and pure care for those around her. She radiated joy, love, grace, and unwavering faith, not only with her family and friends but also with those she had only just met. People often said she had a special gift for making others feel seen, heard, and instantly at ease, as if they had been friends for years. Her laughter told stories of its own, warm and comforting, like a hug that felt like coming home.

Abby had a nomadic soul and an adventurous heart, always ready to seize any opportunity to travel and experience life to the fullest. She never turned down a trip to the beach. She loved soaking up the sun, spending time with her family, and getting her well-earned tan. She was also fond of dressing up and sharing laughter while having a fun time with her friends and family. Many would say her spirit was in sync with the sun itself, as her smile had a way of lighting up any room she entered.

She found joy in the little things: listening to her favorite music, immersing herself in a good book, and attending live concerts whenever possible. But what mattered most to her was showing up for the people she loved. Whether it was a family gathering or cheering on her little sister Lilly at softball games, Abby always made time for those who meant the most to her.

Above all, her faith was at the center of everything she did. Though free-spirited and full of life, Abby remained grounded in her belief that God was greater than any challenge she&nbsp;faced.

God shaped Abby into a beautiful woman, someone who was kind, radiant, faithful, and deeply loving. She was a role model for her siblings, a light to her family, and a blessing to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Abby is survived by her father, Chad Eklund (Tracy), and her mother, Amber Banks (Scott); her siblings, Seth Eklund, Bryce Banks, Bryant Banks, Brooke Banks, Lilly Banks, Chelsea Sharma (Eshan), Riley Anderson, and Zayden Anderson. She is also survived by her aunts and uncles: Brandy Gillespie, Kelly Cole (Jeff), Jennifer Anderson (Josh), Melissa Holcom (Chasen), Jake Deatherage (Nicole), and Darrin Deatherage; and her grandparents, John

Eklund (Jeanette), Debbie Hayden, Glenda Eidet, Don Deatherage, Connie Johnson, and Tim Banks, and numerous cousins and friends.

A public viewing will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Roselawn Burial and Cremation (1920 E. Crawford St., Salina, KS 67401) on Friday, June 27. On Saturday, June 28, at 11:00 AM, the funeral service will be held at The Ark Church (2020 S. Ohio St., Salina, KS 67401), followed by a celebration of life at The Venue (638 Francis St., Salina, KS 67401).

The family is thankful for the incredible outpouring of love they’ve received during this difficult time. Your kind words, generous donations, and ongoing support have meant more than words can express. They want everyone to know that Abby wouldn’t have wanted a room full of black. WASHINGTON (AP) —The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dhs.gov/ntas/advisory/national-terrorism-advisory-system-bulletin-june-22-2025">national terrorism bulletin</a>&nbsp;Sunday warning of possible cyber attacks and violence, including antisemitic hate crimes, following U.S. attacks on Iranian nuclear sites.

The department said there are “no specific credible threats against the homeland,” but noted the Iranian government has condemned the U.S. action.

“A heightened threat environment across the United States” is expected to last throughout the summer, the bulletin said.

The ongoing Iran conflict is causing a heightened threat environment in the United States. Low-level cyber attacks against US networks by pro-Iranian hacktivists are likely, and cyber actors affiliated with the Iranian government may conduct attacks against US networks. Iran also has a long-standing commitment to target US Government officials it views as responsible for the death of an Iranian military commander killed in January 2020. 

The likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland. Multiple recent Homeland terrorist attacks have been motivated by anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiment, and the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict could contribute to US-based individuals plotting additional attacks.

DODGE CITY, Kan. — The 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl will kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City, featuring 88 of the state’s top high school football players in one final showcase.

The Shrine Bowl of Kansas, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to producing annual events that benefit Shriners Children’s. There's something I really love about old-school town halls. Real people showing up, asking the tough questions, and—when things go right—actually getting straight answers from the folks who represent us. That's what's happening on June 29th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lowe Auditorium on the WSU campus. Or it would be if any of Kansas's elected officials actually show up. 

In lieu of that though we are honored to welcome Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut and Representative Maxwell Frost from Florida who are making the trip to Wichita—not for some fancy press event, but to sit down and have real conversations with Kansans about what's actually on our minds.

Now, some people might think this is just another political rally. It's not. We reached out to everyone—Left, Right, Middle, you name it. This isn't about picking sides. It's about the people sitting in those auditorium seats asking the questions that desperately need answers.&nbsp;

Honestly, that's exactly why we need more of this. Our politics don't even feel just broken these days, they feel abandoned in the cold.&nbsp; Maybe having actual conversations in the same room as elected officials could help. So if you're one of our elected officials, no matter what party you're with, consider this your personal invite. We don't just want you there—we need you there. Showing up sends a message that even when everything feels divided, coming together still counts for something.

Announcement for Kansas elected officials invited to speak at Wichita State

Daniel Gordon Tarum was born on December 18, 1957, to Melvin and Eunice Tarum in McPherson, KS&nbsp; He passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at his home in McPherson, KS.

In his growing up years, Daniel was involved in music, playing oboe in the band and orchestra, tenor sax in the marching band, and electric bass in Jazz Ensemble.&nbsp; He also played in a band called “Ozone.”&nbsp; He attended and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church.&nbsp; He achieved the Rank of Eagle in Boy Scouts.&nbsp; He graduated from McPherson High School in 1976, then attended Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; He continued to play in the jazz ensemble under the direction of Bryce Luty, while achieving his Associates of Arts Degree in Electronics in 1979.&nbsp; Later, he continued his education at Wichita State University, earning a B.S in General Studies in 1985, and a Master’s in Communication in 1989.

From a very young age, he always had a fascination with and understanding of electronics.&nbsp; He enjoyed creating his own projects and taking apart electrical equipment, and sometimes putting them back together.&nbsp; He worked in broadcast engineering for KAKE TV and KSN TV, and KMUW and KHCC Radio stations.&nbsp; At one point while he was attending WSU, he was the Chief Engineer/Operator for up to 4 radio stations simultaneously.&nbsp; He transitioned to working at Farmland Industries in Hutchinson as Communications Engineer, and then Western Wireless where he mapped and designed optimal cell tower locations and systems operations.&nbsp; Over the years, he worked as a communications engineer for Electronic Sales and Service in Wichita, and also had his own company, Digisound, providing sound equipment and engineering for concerts and events.

He was a life-long learner – he obtained his pilot’s license, he was a ham radio operator, he tutored high school students in math and physics, he would listen to radio programs and podcasts and watch documentaries and have 1-2 books he was reading.&nbsp; He loved traveling to the mountains of Colorado with friends.&nbsp; He enjoyed target shooting.&nbsp; He especially enjoyed his 2 special dogs, Tyrone and Coco.&nbsp; He treasured time with family, making trips out to Iola, KS, to be with his sister Julie’s family, and with helping care for his nephews and niece in Wichita.

Dan had lived in Wichita from 1979 – 2015, when he moved back to McPherson to help care first for his mom as she battled Alzheimer’s, and then for his dad as he battled lung issues and declining health.&nbsp; Dan found his church home with many family and friends at New Gottland Lutheran Church.&nbsp; He would frequently speak of Bible Studies, sermons, going out to lunch, having help from friends, and being a part of a welcoming community.

Dan was preceded in death by grandparents Atle and Jennie (Hansen) Tarum; grandparents Frank and Evangeline (Eva Burk) Bentson; sister and brother-in-law Julie and David Tidd; parents Melvin and Eunice Tarum.&nbsp;

Also, happy last day to Adam (Teicher) – officially the last day. They gave you donuts and kicked your tail out the door (laughs), that’s how it goes. It’s been great though. Other than that, we’re back here (on) the 20th, 21st, depending on how you look at it. Q: Did you push for rookies and quarterbacks to have a little extra time this year?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, I did. We don’t have a ton of guys that we could bring there, so I didn’t feel like that was a valuable time. We got the rookies here with extra time, so we took advantage of that and (we have) done that throughout the whole offseason program so I thought we got accomplished what we needed to.”

Q: How do you see the season playing out for Travis Kelce in terms of playing time?

REID:&nbsp;“I’m not really feeling that. It’ll be similar to last year, I’d imagine, as it goes. He’s (Travis Kelce) in great shape right now so I think he’s looking forward to getting going.”

Q: No concessions in terms of Travis Kelce’s age?

REID:&nbsp;“Listen, I always watch him (Travis Kelce). I always keep an eye on him, I know he’s getting older. He doesn’t know he’s getting older, but I do. I can be the bad guy in some cases there, if needed. If I think it’s catching up to him a little bit, I’ll pull off and put him where he needs to be. Other than that, he hasn’t showed me any of that yet, he’s done really well with it.”

Q: Have you noticed the effects of him being in good shape?

REID:&nbsp;“I know he’s (Travis Kelce) told you that, but you can tell he’s worked out. He normally comes in in pretty good shape, so it’s not like he hasn’t been. You don’t survive as long as he has and play at the level he has if you’re not in good shape. His weight – he’s one of the guys you can fluctuate with his weight and he’s played very successfully at a higher weight and successful at a lower weight. Right now, he’s a little bit lower than what he was last year.”

Q: Do you anticipate Josh Simmons and Rashee Rice to be full goes at the beginning of training camp?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think they’re both (Josh Simmons and Rashee Rice) ready to go. They actually got great work in in these camps here.”

REID:&nbsp;“I think we’re going to be okay there. He (Jared Wiley) got some work here the last couple days, so I think we’ll be fine there.”

Q: Based on what you have seen from Josh Simmons, can you envision him as a starter this year?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, potentially, yes. Listen, you can see his (Josh Simmons) athletic ability, you can see his want to. He’s got (a) great attitude, he’s approached everything the right way, plus a little bit extra. You can tell – if you just want to look at his rehab, you can see that he had a mindset that ‘I’m going to get in there. It’s not going to be training camp. It’s going to be like now.’ He worked his tail off to get there, so you respect that part of it. He’s done a nice job in there. He’s worked well and we’ll just see. We’ll see what training camp does to him. It’s different when things are flying fast up there and you have full contact and pads on. We’ll see how he does.”

Q: What have you seen from Tyquan Thornton?

REID:&nbsp;“I like Tyquan (Thornton). I like the way he’s approached things. He has the quarterback’s trust, which is a positive thing. You have valuable reps in here. The other guys can see he’s a talented guy so, so far, so good. Again, I’d like to see him in a game situation (and) how he handles it. I’d anticipate he’d do a nice job. I want to see where we’re at with that.”

Q: Will you be able to decompress over the next few weeks and completely stay away?

REID:&nbsp;“You never completely stay away but what I do, I enjoy doing. Yeah, no, I’ll decompress.”

Q: With so many young guys getting ready for the ramp up, do you guys set individual goals with them or is it more like a general improvement?

You have to practice those things and do it fast and make it to where it’s just second nature for you. So yeah, we talk about those types of things. Then, obviously, I think everybody right now is sitting there going, ‘Yeah, you want to win the Super Bowl. That’s what you want to do.’ We’re right there, that’s our primary goal is to put ourselves in the best position we can to win.”

Q: What’s the guidance for Patrick Mahomes over the next four-to-five weeks?

REID:&nbsp;“Pat (Patrick Mahomes) will go ahead and – I’m sure he’ll take a couple days off here then start ramping up from there (and) getting himself ready. I’m sure there will be a lot of golf in between there so that’s how he decompresses – that along with his family.”

Q: How has Mike Caliendo responded to the Super Bowl? What kind of offseason has he had?

Padilla said that even though he was accompanied by a National Guardsman and an FBI agent, “I was pushed and pulled, struggled to maintain my balance” and ended up flat on his chest on the floor.

“I was handcuffed and marched down a hallway repeatedly asking, ‘Why I am being detained?’” Padilla said as several of his colleagues from both major political parties sat in their chairs and listened. “Not once did they tell me why.”

He said he wondered in the moment if he was being arrested — he wasn’t — and, if he was, what the city and his family would think.

“What will a city already on edge from being militarized think when they see their U.S. senator being handcuffed for just trying to ask a question?” Padilla said.

In a statement afterward, the Department of Homeland Security said that Padilla “chose disrespectful political theater” and that the Secret Service “thought he was an attacker.” The statement claimed erroneously that Padilla did not identify himself — he did, as he was being pushed from the room.

“Padilla was told repeatedly to back away and did not comply with officers’ repeated commands,” the statement said, adding that officers acted appropriately.

The Saline County Emergency Management team continues to monitor severe weather conditions and the associated flood risks, as the region enters an active weather period today through tonight on Tuesday, June 17th.

According to Saline County Emergency Management, the National Weather Service has placed much of central and south-central Kansas, including Saline County, under a 'moderate risk' for severe storms beginning this afternoon and continuing into early Wednesday morning.

Smoky Hill River near Mentor: Forecasted crest near 24.2 feet, approaching moderate flood stage.

Smoky Hill River near New Cambria: Projected to crest around 30.3 feet, above moderate flood stage.

River levels are currently well below flood stage but are expected to rise rapidly as rainfall moves through the area. Residents in low-lying areas near rivers, streams and creeks should prepare for possible flooding and monitor conditions closely. Saline County encourages residents to not drive through flooded roadways and to always follow official detours and barricades.

Saline County Emergency Management remains in close coordination with the National Weather Service and regional response partners and will provide additional information as conditions warrant.

UPDATE: Possibility of severe thunderstorms and flooding for Saline County to continue throughout Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning

The US National Weather Service Wichita, KS has issued a watch for scattered showers and storms to continue across portions of central and south-central Kansas on Tuesday June 17th. 

According to the National Weather Service, these showers and storms will continue through at least 10:00 am on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service also reported of isolated hail up to ping pong size possibly occurred until earlier on Tuesday at 7:00 am with frequent lightning.

Scattered showers and storms for Saline County to continue throughout Tuesday morning

In his first words directed specifically to Americans,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/pope-leo-xiv">Pope Leo XIV</a>&nbsp;told young people on Saturday how to find hope and meaning in their lives through God and in service to others.

“So many people who suffer from different experiences of depression or sadness — they can discover that the love of God is truly healing, that it brings hope,” the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/conclave-pope-francis-cardinals-vatican-d7991a37a679f09792ed220cc1f6bbed">first American pope</a>&nbsp;said in a video broadcast on the jumbotron at the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vatican-new-pope-leo-xiv-facts-chicago-peru-fe9e955bfc5c683311575b1b3cf079f5">White Sox baseball</a>&nbsp;stadium in Chicago.

The event — set in Leo's hometown and at the home stadium of his favorite major league team — was organized by the Archdiocese of Chicago in honor of his recent election as pope. Leo seized the opportunity to speak directly to young people, tying his message to the Catholic Church's ongoing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vatican-pope-holy-year-jubilee-957b791dcb4143c9f33e4cb23ea9cd6b">Jubilee</a>&nbsp;year of hope that was declared by Pope Francis.

In Saturday's message, Leo urged those listening in the stadium and online to be beacons of hope capable of inspiring others.

“To share that message of hope with one another — in outreach, in service, in looking for ways to make our world a better place — gives true life to all of us, and is a sign of hope for the whole world.”

The afternoon program, emceed by Chicago Bulls announcer Chuck Swirsky, highlighted Leo’s roots, including music by the city's Leo Catholic High School Choir and a musician from Peru, according to the event's program. There was also a discussion featuring a former teacher of the pope as well as a high school classmate and fellow Augustinian.

The event also celebrated the mixing of Catholicism and baseball, including a special invitation from the team for Leo to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at a future White Sox game.

Leo, formerly Robert Prevost, was elected May 8, becoming the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the church.

Leo, 69, spent his career serving as an Augustinian missionary and ministering in Peru before taking over the Vatican’s powerful office of bishops. He succeeded Pope Francis, who died April 21.

“When I see each and every one of you, when I see how people gather together to celebrate their faith, I discover myself how much hope there is in the world,” Leo said in the video message.

The program was followed by a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago who was part of the conclave that elected Leo.

Attempting to distill&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/brian-wilson-music-entertainment-arts-and-entertainment-6574d4bcebf3f3d98b46c3eb2593cfa5">Wilson’s talent and influence</a>&nbsp;in a few short songs is an impossibility; even just focusing on a few select cuts from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/brian-wilson-music-entertainment-arts-and-entertainment-6574d4bcebf3f3d98b46c3eb2593cfa5">The Beach Boys’</a>&nbsp;1966 album “Pet Sounds,” routinely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time, would feel shortsighted. (Lest we forget, there is no Beatles’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/e0e565258e1748c48e8be315041f737b">“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club”</a>&nbsp;without it, and countless other classics past and present.) The song of the summer in 1963 — heck,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/songs-of-summer-2024-b38527d7ff8d498e72943ef84cda638b">the song of any summer,</a>&nbsp;ever — “Surfin’ USA” at least partially introduced the group that would forever become synonymous with an image of eternal California bliss, where the sun always shines, the waves are always pristine, and paradise is a place on Earth. It’s hard to imagine the beach existing before these wake-up riffs, the guitars that sparked a surf rock movement and then some. (Though it is important to mention that the song borrows heavily from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/chuck-berry">Chuck Berry’s</a>&nbsp;“Sweet Little Sixteen.”) It’s hard to think that surf music was once mostly just instrumental — even when Wilson and his cousin, fellow Beach Boy&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-music-3654257187e84abda38a7cdddeda5842">Mike Love,</a>&nbsp;hastily wrote up their first single, “Surfin,’” a minor hit released in 1961.

1964:&nbsp;“Don’t Worry Baby,”&nbsp;The Beach Boys

Think of it as a response to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ronnie-spector-dead-84c905db02a01ffa43a6052c3ce66920">The Ronettes’</a>&nbsp;“Be My Baby.” The hot-rod hit “Don’t Worry Baby” is the cheery B-side to “I Get Around,” and has one of the most transformative key shifts in pop music history, from the man’s perspective in the verse to the woman’s response in the chorus. Brilliant!

1965:&nbsp;“California Girls,”&nbsp;The Beach Boys

Headphones on, stereo up. The Beach Boys’ “California Girls” sounds massive. It is no doubt the result of Wilson’s love and admiration for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/phil-spector-dead-2845684db91046267039f7d628ce20d4">Phil Spector’s</a>&nbsp;“Wall of Sound,” which lead to the song’s use of guitar, horns, percussion and organ as its overture. The song is a sunshine-y good time — and would later inspire&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/katy-perry">Katy Perry’s</a>&nbsp;“California Gurls,” among countless others. But most importantly, the song establishes the band — and Wilson’s own — larger-than-life aspirations, where pop music could be both avant-garde and built of earworms.

1966:&nbsp;“Wouldn’t It Be Nice,”&nbsp;The Beach Boys

Wilson’s voice is the first one heard on the Beach Boys’ unimpeachable “Pet Sounds.” “Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older? / Then we wouldn’t have to wait so long,” he sweetly sings on the album’s opener. “And wouldn’t it be nice to live together / In the kind of world where we belong?” Optimism and innocence are the name of the game, and the listener is the winner.

1966:&nbsp;“God Only Knows,”&nbsp;The Beach Boys

If Wilson must be known for one thing, let it be his inimitable sense of harmony, perfected across his craft and completely unignorable on “God Only Knows,” a masterclass in vocals, love, emotional depth, harpsichord and the intersection of all such forces.

“God Only Knows” is also one of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/paul-mccartney">Paul McCartney’s</a>&nbsp;favorite songs of all time, one known to bring him to tears.

1967:&nbsp;“Good Vibrations,”&nbsp;The Beach Boys

What kind of vibrations? Good, good, GOOD vibrations. And at a cost. As the story goes, one of the Beach Boys’ best-known hits — and, arguably, one of the most immediately recognizable songs in rock ’n’ roll history — was recorded over seven months, in four different studios, reportedly costing up to $75,000. And it is an absolute masterpiece of theremin, cello, harmonica and so much more. Pop music has never been so ambitious — and successful.

1967:&nbsp;“Heroes and Villains,”&nbsp;The Beach Boys

“Heroes and Villains” might be one of the most complex songs in the Beach Boys’ discography, and with good reason. It is the opener of “Smile,” what Wilson called a “teenage symphony to God,” a whimsical cycle of songs on nature and American folklore written with lyricist Van Dyke Parks. It was delayed, then canceled, then rerecorded and issued in September 1967 on “Smiley Smile,” dismissed by Carl Wilson as a “bunt instead of a grand slam.” In moments, “Heroes and Villains” is psychedelic, in others, it embodies an otherworldly barbershop quartet. It is off-kilter and clever, as Wilson’s band so often proved to be.

1967:&nbsp;“Darlin’,”&nbsp;The Beach Boys

The late ‘60s are an undercelebrated time in Wilson’s creative oeuvre — no doubt an effect of his declining mental health — but there are many rich songs to dig into. Particularly, the soulful, R&amp;B,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/travel-detroit-museums-smokey-robinson-b55595b4f7b25af4c3f9537b048934d2">Motown-esque</a>&nbsp;harmonies of “Darlin’.”

2004: “Don’t Let Her Know She’s an Angel,” Brian Wilson

As the story goes, “Don’t Let Her Know She’s an Angel” was originally record for his 1991 unreleased album “Sweet Insanity,” but did not officially appear until it was rerecorded for his 2004 album “Gettin’ in Over My Head.” The song features a bunch of programming, synths and percussion, which might strike Beach Boys fans as odd. But trust us, it works here.

2012:&nbsp;“Isn’t It Time,”&nbsp;The Beach Boys

This pick might come as a surprise for many fans. “Isn’t It Time” is a cut from “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” the album the legendary group put out to celebrate their 50th anniversary and left a lot to be desired. But within its filler, this song is undoubtedly catchy, with its ukulele and handclap percussion.

10 songs to celebrate the life and legacy of the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson

MINNEAPOLIS - The Kansas FFA student led organization for the first time, has recently elected a State President from Minneapolis, KS since its establishment in 1928.&nbsp;

Lillian Hulse, incoming freshman for Kansas State University made history after the 97th annual Kansas FFA State Convention on May 28th - May 30th, 2025 by becoming the first Kansas FFA State President for the 2025-2026 tenure from Minneapolis, KS. Hulse is the President of the 2025-2026 Kansas FFA State Officer team, which was announced at the Kansas FFA State Convention at the campus of K-State.

"Becoming President was very unexpected for me," but it is an honor to be in this position," said Hulse.&nbsp;

Hulse grew up on a farm with her family, where they raised commercial Hereford cattle. Since she was always around the agricultural lifestyle, Hulse found her love and interest for it. She then became involved with <a href="https://4-h.org/about/">4-H</a>&nbsp;when she was 6 years old.&nbsp;

Hulse first joined Kansas FFA in the Minneapolis chapter when she was a 7th grader. Kansas FFA was that next step for her as she&nbsp; followed her brother's footsteps, August Hulse who was in Kansas FFA. This is where she found her own interest in career development and leadership development events, that allowed her to find her own passions for agriculture.&nbsp;

“The leadership aspect, allows you to meet alot of people, learn alot about agriculture and learn from others," said Hulse. 

She then served as the chapter officer for Minneapolis, when she was a sophomore in high school and ran for district office. This is when Hulse realized that she really enjoyed meeting people and making an impact in the leadership role. Furthermore, Hulse then became the Minneapolis Chapter Vice President that same year and her junior year, she was elected as the President for the chapter of Minneapolis. She went on ahead and served in the Kansas FFA North Central Kansas District, which oversees 30 chapters. Hulse was the Treasurer for the district her junior year and was then elected as Vice President her senior of high school. 

Throughout her journey, she found her interest in Agricultural Communications, which is a setting where FFA students listen to an individual speak about an agricultural issue and then students will write an article regarding it.&nbsp;

"I realized that I really love Agricultural Communications and it allowed me to start my supervised agricultural experience," said Hulse.

Hulse has written articles for “Grass and Grain” (Kansas Agriculture Newspaper) and the "Minneapolis Messenger." She has wrote stories that touch on topics on why she thinks agricultural education should be taught in grade schools in some way of form.

Voting process of becoming the first Kansas FFA State President out of Minneapolis, KS

Before she started her role as Kansas FFA State President for the 2025-2026 year, she had to go through a lengthy process during State Convention. Hulse stated that the voting process took 3 days full of interviews, speeches and activities.&nbsp;

"I had a busy week, but in the end it helped me work on my own communication skills," said Hulse.

According to Hulse, the voting process consisted of 12 people on a nominating committee, past state officers, advisors and agricultural industry professionals that are part of a process that includes delegates and every chapter in the state of Kansas (240 chapters).

The candidates went through many interviews (both one on one and group), speeches about a specific topic and issues regarding the agricultural industry. The nominating committee also voted and evaluated on a specific activity that was performed by the candidate and their partner. Then delegates would evaluate each candidate during a meet and greet session, which went over their&nbsp;personable skills and traits. Candidates were also evaluated through a parliamentary procedure and their employability skills, which is a similar to a job interview.

After the process, Hulse was then elected as the Kansas FFA State President for the 2025-2026 State Officer team.

Hulse has been pretty busy since she has started her presidency role. She described her role as one who will lead&nbsp;all of the Board of Director meetings for Kansas FFA, participating in Chapter Leadership Trainings and District Officer Conferences.&nbsp;

According to Hulse, Chapter Leadership Trainings are&nbsp;meant to help other chapters (local) across the state create their own program of activities for the year. District Officer Conferences&nbsp;help district officers (7 of them) learn how to facilitate their own conferences that they will hold throughout the year. Hulse will also participate in industry visits and tours as well.

Hulse is committed to attending K-State University in Manhattan, where she will be majoring in Agricultural Education and Communications. After her college career, she plans on hoping to be an agriculture teacher, writer and a Kansas FFA advisor.

"I hope to advocate and inform people about issues regarding agriculture,” said Hulse. Hopefully more people can join FFA and grow from it themselves.”

"Now with this degree that I am pursuing in agricultural education, I hope to help people become more aware of agriculture and the importance of it especially for people at a young age," said Hulse.

Hulse will continue to write for Grass and Grain during her college career.&nbsp;

Thoughts on FFA and Hulse's support system

Hulse could not have accomplished this achievement by herself as she thanks her family and her Minneapolis FFA agriculture teacher and advisor, Christina Wallace. She thanked her father, Joshua Hulse, mother, Melissa Hulse and brother, August Hulse. Wallace helped her practice for about 3 months before state convention, where she was elected as Kansas FFA State President.

"No matter what she (Wallace) always went out her way to make sure I succeeded and she does this for everyone too,” said Hulse. “There is no way I would be state president if it was not for her. Her and my family&nbsp;have always been very supportive."

Wallace had nothing but great things to say about Hulse. Both had a common experience when it came to entering a new environment, as Wallace started her teaching career in Minneapolis when Hulse entered the Minneapolis chapter in the 7th grade, after she transferred from Bennington.

“We got to journey along and figure things out together," said Wallace.

Wallace stated when she first met Hulse as a student, that she was very 'quiet,' yet very 'diligent.' She described that Hulse never let her grades falter no matter how busy she may have gotten with extracurricular activities and FFA.&nbsp;

As Hulse started to acclimate to the Minneapolis environment, Wallace said this is when she 'came out her shell.'

“The more I got to spend time with Lillian, the more I got to know her and we were comfortable around each other,” said Wallace. “Once you are comfortable around the people you know, then it flows over to every aspect of your life.”

Wallace commented that many teachers have said they wish more students were like Hulse. She also described that Hulse was 'very competitive' and that she wanted to compete in every contest and opportunity that was available to her.

“She (Hulse) was almost always top ten in just about everything she competed in,” said Wallace. "Literally I can count on one hand, the contests that she did not place top ten in the contests she had gone to for 4 years.”

The friendship that Hulse and Wallace have is one that is strong and keeps each other uplifted. Wallace talked about how she 'pushed her to try new things' that Hulse did not always think were her best fit. Not only did Wallace support her through thick and thin, but Hulse has been one to impact Wallace's life as well.

“There’s that bible verse that says, 'Iron Sharpens Iron' and if I can keep Lillian by my side my whole life I would be sharpest person you will ever meet,” said Wallace. “With Lillian’s incredible accomplishments and unwavering faith, it kept me so grounded and when her name got called (to be State President) I don't think I have felt that much pride in my heart for someone to be related to my job. It was proud moment for all of us at Minneapolis and especially those that have all worked closely with her."
