THE TOP 51) Coming off a 38-35 come-from-behind win over North Dakota last week in its home opener, K-State now turns its attention to Army as the Black Knights visit Manhattan on Saturday evening inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game, which kicks off at 6 p.m., will be shown on ESPN with Roy Philpott (play-by-play) and Louis Riddick (analyst) and Kris Budden (sideline) on the call.

2) Quarterback Avery Johnson is set to make his 17th-career start under center. The Wichita, Kansas, product enters the game with a 157.7 pass efficiency ranking and is 49-of-73 (67.1%) for 591 yards and five touchdowns on the year. He enters the week ranking 14th nationally in passing yards per game (295.5) and 16th nationally in completions per game (24.5).

3) K-State has seen 11 different players record catches this season, and wide receiver Jayce Brown is coming off his best game as a Wildcat. Brown had 12 catches for 109 yards and a touchdown, while Jaron Tibbs and Joe Jackson each hauled in TD receptions last week.&nbsp; Brown leads the team in receiving with 16 catches for 187 yards and three TDs, while Jerand Bradley has eight catches for 121 yards and a score.

4) In two games, K-State’s defense has held its opponents to an average of 2.9 yards per rush on 79 attempts and also has 16 tackles for loss and seven sacks, the latter of which ranks 24th nationally. Austin Romaine leads the way in tackles with 18 stops, which includes 10 last week against North Dakota. Tobi Osunsanmi has a team-leading 3.0 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.

5) The Wildcats’ defensive backs have totaled 10 pass breakups through the first two weeks of the season. Cornerback Zashon Rich leads the way with three passes defended, and he is second on the team with 11 tackles. Fellow cornerback Donovan McIntosh has two pass breakups, while five other Wildcats have recorded one each. The Cats also have three fumble recoveries on the year.

• Klieman, who is 49-29 since arriving at K-State, has led the Cats to five victories over teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP Top 25, the most of any active Big 12 program since 2019.

• The Wildcats recorded their largest bowl come-from-behind victory in the 2024 Rate Bowl as they trailed Rutgers by 17 points in the third quarter and by 12 points in the fourth quarter before a 44-41 victory.

• In last week’s home opener against North Dakota, the Wildcats trailed, 35-31, with 1:33 remaining and needed to go 81 yards for a touchdown. Avery Johnson connected with Joe Jackson on a six-yard touchdown pass with 0:42 left for the win. It was the first game-winning touchdown with less than 1:00 remaining in regulation since a Skylar Thompson-to-Isaiah Zuber pass on the final play of the game against Iowa State in 2017.

• K-State is the nation’s best in non-offensive touchdowns over the last 25-plus seasons as it has 135 since 1999, nine more than the next closest team (Alabama – 126) and 17 more than the next Big 12 program (Utah – 118).

• K-State recorded four non-offensive scores during the 2024 season, its most since also recording four in 2020.

• The four non-offensive scores a year ago were: a Ty Bowman blocked punt against UT Martin that was returned for a score by Colby McCalister, a 60-yard fumble return by Jack Fabris at Tulane, a 71-yard punt return by Dylan Edwards against Arizona, and a 43-yard interception return by Marques Sigle at West Virginia.

• After spending the 2024 season coaching the K-State quarterbacks and serving as co-offensive coordinator, associate head coach Matt Wells is now the full-time play caller in 2025.

• All Wells did during his first season on staff was tutor Avery Johnson to a school-record 25 touchdown passes, while his sophomore signal caller ranked fifth in school history in passing yards (2,985) and completions (238).

• Wells and Johnson helped guide a K-State offense that finished in the top 15 nationally in four categories and in the top 10 of school history in 15 game or season categories.

TOTAL OFFENSE• K-State has totaled at least 375 yards of offense in 34 of the last 42 games dating back to the beginning of the 2022 season.

• The 34 games with at least 375 yards are tied for fourth among Power 4 programs and second among Big 12 schools. Georgia leads the way with 37, followed by Oregon and USC with 35, while LSU, TCU, Texas and Washington are also at 34.

• During that stretch, K-State holds a 27-7 record when totaling at least 375 yards, while the Wildcats are 2-6 when going under that mark.RED ZONE SUCCESS• Since Chris Klieman’s first season at K-State in 2019, the Wildcats have been the best in the Big 12 in terms of converting red-zone opportunities into points.

• The Wildcats rank first in the Big 12 with an 89.8% (274-of-305) success rate in the red zone since 2019, just ahead of both Texas Tech (88.1%) and Oklahoma State (87.7%).

• The Cats rushed for at least 200 yards in eight games last year, the most in the Big 12 and the second most among Power 4 schools.

• The average was driven by 95 rushes of at least 10 yards to rank seventh in the nation, while K-State’s 34 rushing plays of 20 or more yards last season ranked second (UNLV, 36).NEW – BUT EXPERIENCED – OL• Kansas State brought back seven offensive linemen who have seen playing time in a Wildcat uniform prior to the start of 2025 but only three that earned starts. However, K-State is not void of experience thanks to the addition of a few transfers.

• The Wildcats’ six primary offensive linemen in the first two games have totaled 168 games played and 54 starts, led by left guard Taylor Poitier (33 games, 18 starts).

• The other primary linemen to open the 2025 season are center Sam Hecht (32 games, 15 starts), right guard JB Nelson (33 games, 9 starts), tackle/guard Andrew Leingang (29 games, 4 starts), left tackle John Pastore (12 games, 2 start) and tackle Terrence Enos Jr. (29 games, 6 starts).VERY EFFICIENT• Quarterback Avery Johnson had one of his better outputs in terms of efficiency in the season opener, completing 70.0% of his passes and producing a 168.4 pass efficiency rating.

• Johnson went 21-of-30 for 273 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions against Iowa State. His 70.0% completion clip was a career best (minimum 10 attempts), bettering his 66.7% mark in last year’s season opener against UT Martin. His pass efficiency rating was the second highest of his career, only to be outdone by a 186.0 mark last year at West Virginia.THROWING FOR 300• Avery Johnson backed his season-opening performance up with the first 300-yard passing game of his career as he threw for 318 yards and a career-high tying three touchdowns on 28-of-43 aim against North Dakota. His completion and attempt totals were also a career high.

• It was the 46th 300-yard passing game in school history and the first since Will Howard went for 327 during an overtime contest at Texas in 2023.

MULTIPLE TD PASSES• Avery Johnson has thrown multiple touchdown passes in each of the last five games dating back to last year, which includes a career-high tying three last year against Iowa State and Rutgers and last week against North Dakota.

• It is the longest streak of games with multiple touchdown passes since Will Howard held a five-game streak in 2023 against TCU, Houston, Texas, Baylor and Kansas.

• A product of Wichita, Kansas, Johnson is looking to become the first K-State signal caller with multiple touchdown passes in at least six games since Josh Freeman had a seven-game streak over the final three games of 2007 (vs. Nebraska, Missouri, Fresno State) and the first four games of 2008 (vs. North Texas, Montana State, Louisville, Louisiana).

OPENING STATEMENT:&nbsp;“All right, as far as the injuries go today for practice, really (Jalen) Royals is the only one that won’t practice. Everybody else will go, before the challenge of playing the Chargers, they’re a good football team. They’re into that second year, so you know that they’ve got the offense, defense and special teams down. (Chargers Head Coach) Jim (Harbaugh) does a great job with that crew of getting them ready. They’ve got good players, they’re well coached, their coordinators – (Chargers Offensive Coordinator) Greg (Roman) on offense (and) (Chargers Defensive Coordinator) Jesse (Minter) on defense and (Chargers Special Teams Coordinator) Ryan (Ficken) on special teams. They’re all good coordinators. Should be a heck of a football game. (I) look forward to going to Brazil. I mean that’s going to be – you don’t get invited unless you’ve done it right in the past. We feel honored to have the opportunity to go down there. With that, time’s yours.”

Q: On Hollywood Brown’s injury progress.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, so listen, I think he’ll (Hollywood Brown) be ok. He’s a veteran guy. If he’s younger, I’d be a little bit more worried about it, but he’s a veteran guy that kinda knows how to go about it and I think he should be fine. We’ve got guys that can rotate in too, so we mix and match as we go.”

Q: How have you seen Jim Harbaugh elevate the Chargers?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, listen I think he (Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh) does a great job with really all the phases. And I know as you go here, he can even add more. They’ve done a nice job that’s what I can tell you.”

Q: What concerns you most about the Chargers defense?

REID:&nbsp;“They’re a zone (defense) team. But the zones are tight, and they have a bunch of different combinations. Plus, they can play man, and they do that well, but their zones are – they do a heck of a job with that. You can see why they were ranked so high and they’re trying not to give up the big play obviously but at the same time be able to attack underneath. They’ve got good speed on the defense and those front guys. I mean, (number) 52 (Chargers LB Khalil Mack), heck of a player. That number 3 (Chargers S Derwin James Jr.) is not bad either, so they’re good players for them (Chargers).”

Q: What have you learned about organizing and preparing for an international trip?

REID:&nbsp;“I just look at the time of preparation the people did (staff). They tried to do it so it’s not any problem with the players or coaches. They kind of keep us out of it but the work that goes on behind the scenes there is crazy. They’re moving up basically a whole crew to go down there for a couple days. It’s one thing to go for a day to a game, let alone a couple days. It’s quite a challenge and then you’ve got different medical staffs that aren’t quite as familiar with what we are doing and that whole part of it. It’s an interesting process, but our guys have gotten pretty efficient with it over the years.”

Q:&nbsp;Is there a difference in traveling overseas for a game at the beginning of the season versus in the middle of the season?

REID:&nbsp;“I’d say if it was our first year (traveling overseas for a game), that might be a pretty big challenge but having done it before, I think our people have a pretty good feel for it. I think the players, when it is all said and done, just want to play. They don’t really care where it is. I’d probably tell you both teams feel that way. That’s what I’ve noticed over the years.”

Q<a>:</a>&nbsp;On the impact of not playing most of the games on Sunday and the challenges.

REID:&nbsp;“Well it’s the head coach’s responsibility to keep things as organized and on time for the guys. Consistent as you possibly can for that. That’s you know one of the jobs that I deal with. It hasn’t been a problem. These guys are so willing to do anything that you lay it out there and they go ‘ok, here we go’. It’s been pretty good but depending on the stacked days in a row as far as when you play three games in ten days, something like that, the rest becomes – you’ve got to give these guys some time to get themselves back, you know?”

Q:&nbsp;What stood out about Patrick Mahomes over the course of the last four weeks?

REID:&nbsp;“First of all, I thought he (Patrick Mahomes) had a good camp all the way through. He’s a great leader. He has continued on with that. (He) wants to know everything. Loves that part of it. Asks great questions. I like the way that he’s got some guys back now for a second term, so he’s familiar with them and trying to take that to another level on gamedays, so I know that’s one of his challenges right now with the crew that we have. He feels comfortable with the guys and so that’s a good part, but he doesn’t let anything really bother him. He (is) just full steam ahead with a positive attitude. That’s a thing that I appreciate the most, so I even think he has taken it up a notch this year and he’s really had a nice camp. You can see he is comfortable with the guys that he is playing with out there.”

Q:&nbsp;On if he has noticed Patrick Mahomes’ excitement level increase for primetime games.

REID:&nbsp;“Well he (Patrick Mahomes) likes to play every game. He probably does, I don’t know that. I know he gets up for every game. If we played one of the high school teams he would be fired up (laughter). He doesn’t care (about if it is a primetime game or not).”

Q: What has your anticipation been like to start this year?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I mean, I'm super excited, you know. You get to go out there and play the game that you love. And we got a lot of guys that are super hungry and want to go out there and put on a show, and so for us, we have to just go out there with the mentality (of), let's have some fun playing the game that we love and try to go out there and win football games.”

Q: How optimistic are you about the offensive line?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think every step of the way so far, they've (offensive line) done a great job of getting better and better and kind of checking those boxes. And so, this will be a great test for them. And this is a prolific D-line with (Chargers LB) Khalil Mack and really all throughout. They (have) got depth at edge at d-tackles, and they were one of the best defenses in the league this last year. So, it'll be another test for these guys, and I'm excited for them to go out there and accept the challenge and showcase who they are.”

Q: What stands out about this team that gives you the confidence that this team can make it back to the Super Bowl?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think it's just how we've kind of went about our business in the offseason. I mean, you can just see from the OTAs and to the training camp, we have a good mix of veteran guys, kind of these young veteran guys that have been in a lot of big games and then some, like young guys that are athletic and want to make their imprint. And so, when you have that good mix of players like that, you have the experience, you have the athleticism and now you have to go out there and just prove that you can win. And we (have) got a lot of guys on our football team that have won a lot of games. So how can we bring those guys in that are new up to the standard that we hold every single day at practice, in the film room, and on the game days? And so, I think we've done that so far, and now it's about going out there and proving it on game day.”

Q: With the preparation in the offseason, how do you feel going into this season?

MAHOMES: “No, I feel great. You know, it was good to get a full offseason and nothing serious injury wise. So just being able to go out there and work my body and then being able to get these repetitions with the receivers and get on the same page with them. And we have a lot of the same receivers, I think, which is cool kind of in those primary roles with Xavier (Worthy) and then with Rashee (Rice) and then Hollywood (Brown). Guys that I've thrown to a lot and add in with the tight ends, and then the new guys were even here, a lot of them last year as well. And so having that chemistry built before the offseason, we can kind of work on the finer details of things, and I think it's going to show up on game days because we've kind of built that chemistry before.”

Q: What was your initial reaction to seeing the first regular season game plan?

MAHOMES: “Yeah, I think, I mean, I think it's a good game plan. I think coaches have kind of been on it even before we finished that last preseason game. And so, I finished it and turned right to watching film on the Chargers. Obviously (I) have a good feel for stuff they did last year. I mean, you watch – you play them twice and then we had that bye week, so I was watching Chargers film with the possibility of playing them in the playoffs last year. And so, they're a good defense. I mean they're a really good defense at every single level. They have great players. You know they’re coached really well by (Chargers Defensive Coordinator) Coach (Jesse) Minter and they're going to come in with the right mentality. And so, it's about us accepting the challenge. I feel like we have a good game plan in so far, we’ll keep adding to that throughout the week. But you (have) got to be able to execute on a play-by-play basis in order to move the football, because they will capitalize on all miscues and take advantage of their opportunities as well.”

Q: How important are the AFC West days throughout the offseason for when you go into a game like this?

MAHOMES: “For sure, I mean, you get a good feel for the entire scheme of things you know, they have really, they have a fast defense that can be complex, and everybody knows what they're doing. And so, you want to be able to know what they're trying to execute. I mean, obviously they're going to have changeups. I mean they have good coaches and good players, but you want to have a good sense of what they're trying to do, what they're trying to make the quarterback do and try to get you outside of your comfort zone. And so, trying to be as simple as you can and trying to stay within what we do at a high level and then try to execute against stuff that they're trying to scheme up against.”

Q: On your excitement of going to Brazil and starting the season.

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, no, I'm super excited. It'll be a great experience, a great chance to showcase who we are as the Kansas City Chiefs worldwide. And I know the fan base in Brazil is extremely excited as well. So, it'll be a cool experience and being able to play our first game out there against a great opponent, it'll be a lot of fun.”

Q:&nbsp;What are your thoughts on adjusting to such a long trip?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I mean, obviously I don't know for sure because I've never been down to Brazil before, but I think it's going to be a similar effect (to) Germany, except Germany, you were way ahead (the) timeline and stuff like that. So, it won’t be as crazy as far as the sleep and how you figure out your sleep. I think it's just about managing the plane ride and keeping yourself moving whenever you have opportunities to and getting your body right. But the trainers and coaches have really done the research and they understand what we need to do. So now it's just going down there and playing football. And I think more than anything, we just explained it to some guys how far the trip was. Some guys didn’t understand how far the travel was – Travis (Kelce), even though he was just down there like last year. So, I was just explaining to him how the globe works (laughter).”

Q:&nbsp;Is there a difference between starting the first regular season game internationally versus a couple of weeks into the season?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“You know, I think the blessing that we've had over these last few years is we've had a lot of crazy schedules. So, it's like you just kind of go with the flow, you trust in the decisions that our operations and our coaches kind of plan for us throughout the offseason, and then we just try to execute that at a high level so that when we get to the football field, we can just play our best football. And that's what we're here to do. And so, we're excited for the opportunity”

Q:&nbsp;Does Rashee Rice’s suspension change the game plan against the Chargers?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think we prepared a little bit in the offseason just for other guys (to) have to step up in certain roles but that's part of it, you know even, I mean, last year with the injury that he (Rashee Rice) had guys had to step up and make plays. And so, I think obviously losing a receiver of that magnitude that (is) that good, &nbsp;it takes away from the offense in a sense, but at the same time, we have – brought in depth with – (General Manager Brett) Veach and them (Player Personnel Staff), have brought in a lot of receiver depth so that guys can step up and take over that role in different spots. It won’t be just one guy. It’ll be multiple guys that will kind of do some of the stuff that Rashee has done, and then other guys will step up in other spots and make plays as well.”

Q: What’s your anticipation for this year given the outcome of last season?

MCDUFFIE:&nbsp;“Yeah, a lot of excitement, really. I think everybody’s – now that training camp’s over, and now that we’re back from St. Joe’s, (there’s) just that excitement of the first game. Just going out there and putting this defense fully together. During Preseason, I don’t think we played a full half even, altogether. And we showed some glimpses and obviously we played our offense a lot, but finally (we get to) just go out there and play a full game with each other and go hit somebody other than who we always hit is going to be really nice.”

Q: What mentality do you want to establish in Week 1?

MCDUFFIE:&nbsp;“Just that relentless KC (Kansas City) defense. Over these past few years, since I’ve been here at least, I feel like we’ve gotten better and better and better each year, and I think (that) guys are comfortable now. We brought back most of the defense, and we all kind of know how each other plays. So just going out there and – I always say Coach Spags’ (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) thing this year, ‘Be bold, be great’, like that’s truly just what we want to be.”

Q:&nbsp;What have you been told about getting ready for the first game of the season by the veteran players?

SIMMONS:&nbsp;“Just be prepared. They’re (Los Angeles Chargers) a great team, (and) obviously we are, so it’s just about kind of just putting the preparation in and taking that to Brazil.”

Q:&nbsp;What do you want to put on tape for the NFL to see this week?

SIMMONS:&nbsp;“First, I want to do my job. I want to make sure my teammates can count on me, but then it’s just more (about) technique. If you’re always in the right spot at the right time, it can definitely get you a lot of one blocks.”

Q:&nbsp;How did you evaluate your preseason games?

He’s a veteran guy. If he’s younger, I’d be a little bit more worried about it, but he’s a veteran guy that kinda knows how to go about it and I think he should be fine. We’ve got guys that can rotate in too, so we mix and match as we go.”Q: How have you seen Jim Harbaugh elevate the Chargers?REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, listen I think he (Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh) does a great job with really all the phases. And I know as you go here, he can even add more. They’ve done a nice job that’s what I can tell you.”Q: What concerns you most about the Chargers defense?REID:&nbsp;“They’re a zone (defense) team. But the zones are tight, and they have a bunch of different combinations. Plus, they can play man, and they do that well, but their zones are – they do a heck of a job with that. You can see why they were ranked so high and they’re trying not to give up the big play obviously but at the same time be able to attack underneath. They’ve got good speed on the defense and those front guys. I mean, (number) 52 (Chargers LB Khalil Mack), heck of a player. That number 3 (Chargers S Derwin James Jr.) is not bad either, so they’re good players for them (Chargers).”Q: What have you learned about organizing and preparing for an international trip?REID:&nbsp;“I just look at the time of preparation the people did (staff). They tried to do it so it’s not any problem with the players or coaches. They kind of keep us out of it but the work that goes on behind the scenes there is crazy. They’re moving up basically a whole crew to go down there for a couple days. It’s one thing to go for a day to a game, let alone a couple days. It’s quite a challenge and then you’ve got different medical staffs that aren’t quite as familiar with what we are doing and that whole part of it. It’s an interesting process, but our guys have gotten pretty efficient with it over the years.”Q:&nbsp;Is there a difference in traveling overseas for a game at the beginning of the season versus in the middle of the season?REID:&nbsp;“I’d say if it was our first year (traveling overseas for a game), that might be a pretty big challenge but having done it before, I think our people have a pretty good feel for it. I think the players, when it is all said and done, just want to play. They don’t really care where it is. I’d probably tell you both teams feel that way. That’s what I’ve noticed over the years.”Q<a>:</a>&nbsp;On the impact of not playing most of the games on Sunday and the challenges.REID:&nbsp;“Well it’s the head coach’s responsibility to keep things as organized and on time for the guys. Consistent as you possibly can for that. That’s you know one of the jobs that I deal with. It hasn’t been a problem. These guys are so willing to do anything that you lay it out there and they go ‘ok, here we go’. It’s been pretty good but depending on the stacked days in a row as far as when you play three games in ten days, something like that, the rest becomes – you’ve got to give these guys some time to get themselves back, you know?”Q:&nbsp;What stood out about Patrick Mahomes over the course of the last four weeks?REID:&nbsp;“First of all, I thought he (Patrick Mahomes) had a good camp all the way through. He’s a great leader. He has continued on with that. (He) wants to know everything. Loves that part of it. Asks great questions. I like the way that he’s got some guys back now for a second term, so he’s familiar with them and trying to take that to another level on gamedays, so I know that’s one of his challenges right now with the crew that we have. He feels comfortable with the guys and so that’s a good part, but he doesn’t let anything really bother him. He (is) just full steam ahead with a positive attitude. That’s a thing that I appreciate the most, so I even think he has taken it up a notch this year and he’s really had a nice camp. You can see he is comfortable with the guys that he is playing with out there.”Q:&nbsp;On if he has noticed Patrick Mahomes’ excitement level increase for primetime games.REID:&nbsp;“Well he (Patrick Mahomes) likes to play every game. He probably does, I don’t know that. I know he gets up for every game. If we played one of the high school teams he would be fired up (laughter). And so, this will be a great test for them. And this is a prolific D-line with (Chargers LB) Khalil Mack and really all throughout. They (have) got depth at edge at d-tackles, and they were one of the best defenses in the league this last year. So, it'll be another test for these guys, and I'm excited for them to go out there and accept the challenge and showcase who they are.”Q: What stands out about this team that gives you the confidence that this team can make it back to the Super Bowl?MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think it's just how we've kind of went about our business in the offseason. I mean, you can just see from the OTAs and to the training camp, we have a good mix of veteran guys, kind of these young veteran guys that have been in a lot of big games and then some, like young guys that are athletic and want to make their imprint. And so, when you have that good mix of players like that, you have the experience, you have the athleticism and now you have to go out there and just prove that you can win. And we (have) got a lot of guys on our football team that have won a lot of games. So how can we bring those guys in that are new up to the standard that we hold every single day at practice, in the film room, and on the game days? And so, I think we've done that so far, and now it's about going out there and proving it on game day.”Q: With the preparation in the offseason, how do you feel going into this season?MAHOMES: “No, I feel great. You know, it was good to get a full offseason and nothing serious injury wise. So just being able to go out there and work my body and then being able to get these repetitions with the receivers and get on the same page with them. And we have a lot of the same receivers, I think, which is cool kind of in those primary roles with Xavier (Worthy) and then with Rashee (Rice) and then Hollywood (Brown). Guys that I've thrown to a lot and add in with the tight ends, and then the new guys were even here, a lot of them last year as well. And so having that chemistry built before the offseason, we can kind of work on the finer details of things, and I think it's going to show up on game days because we've kind of built that chemistry before.”Q: What was your initial reaction to seeing the first regular season game plan?MAHOMES: “Yeah, I think, I mean, I think it's a good game plan. I think coaches have kind of been on it even before we finished that last preseason game. And so, I finished it and turned right to watching film on the Chargers. Obviously (I) have a good feel for stuff they did last year. I mean, you watch – you play them twice and then we had that bye week, so I was watching Chargers film with the possibility of playing them in the playoffs last year. And so, they're a good defense. I mean they're a really good defense at every single level. They have great players. You know they’re coached really well by (Chargers Defensive Coordinator) Coach (Jesse) Minter and they're going to come in with the right mentality. And so, it's about us accepting the challenge. I feel like we have a good game plan in so far, we’ll keep adding to that throughout the week. But you (have) got to be able to execute on a play-by-play basis in order to move the football, because they will capitalize on all miscues and take advantage of their opportunities as well.”Q: How important are the AFC West days throughout the offseason for when you go into a game like this?MAHOMES: “For sure, I mean, you get a good feel for the entire scheme of things you know, they have really, they have a fast defense that can be complex, and everybody knows what they're doing. And so, you want to be able to know what they're trying to execute. I mean, obviously they're going to have changeups. I mean they have good coaches and good players, but you want to have a good sense of what they're trying to do, what they're trying to make the quarterback do and try to get you outside of your comfort zone. And so, trying to be as simple as you can and trying to stay within what we do at a high level and then try to execute against stuff that they're trying to scheme up against.”Q: On your excitement of going to Brazil and starting the season.MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, no, I'm super excited. It'll be a great experience, a great chance to showcase who we are as the Kansas City Chiefs worldwide. And I know the fan base in Brazil is extremely excited as well. So, it'll be a cool experience and being able to play our first game out there against a great opponent, it'll be a lot of fun.”Q:&nbsp;What are your thoughts on adjusting to such a long trip?MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I mean, obviously I don't know for sure because I've never been down to Brazil before, but I think it's going to be a similar effect (to) Germany, except Germany, you were way ahead (the) timeline and stuff like that. So, it won’t be as crazy as far as the sleep and how you figure out your sleep. I think it's just about managing the plane ride and keeping yourself moving whenever you have opportunities to and getting your body right. But the trainers and coaches have really done the research and they understand what we need to do. So now it's just going down there and playing football. And I think more than anything, we just explained it to some guys how far the trip was. Some guys didn’t understand how far the travel was – Travis (Kelce), even though he was just down there like last year. So, I was just explaining to him how the globe works (laughter).”Q:&nbsp;Is there a difference between starting the first regular season game internationally versus a couple of weeks into the season?MAHOMES:&nbsp;“You know, I think the blessing that we've had over these last few years is we've had a lot of crazy schedules. So, it's like you just kind of go with the flow, you trust in the decisions that our operations and our coaches kind of plan for us throughout the offseason, and then we just try to execute that at a high level so that when we get to the football field, we can just play our best football. And that's what we're here to do. And so, we're excited for the opportunity”Q:&nbsp;Does Rashee Rice’s suspension change the game plan against the Chargers?MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think we prepared a little bit in the offseason just for other guys (to) have to step up in certain roles but that's part of it, you know even, I mean, last year with the injury that he (Rashee Rice) had guys had to step up and make plays. And so, I think obviously losing a receiver of that magnitude that (is) that good, &nbsp;it takes away from the offense in a sense, but at the same time, we have – brought in depth with – (General Manager Brett) Veach and them (Player Personnel Staff), have brought in a lot of receiver depth so that guys can step up and take over that role in different spots. It won’t be just one guy. WICHITA, Kan. (August 31, 2025)—Kala’i Rosario tied the franchise single-season record by hitting his 24th home run of the season in a 6-3 victory for the Wichita Wind Surge over the Arkansas Travelers at Equity Bank Park. 

The win secured a series sweep for the Wind Surge, who remain in third place of the Texas League North, two games back of Tulsa for a playoff spot.&nbsp;Andrew Cossetti hit a solo home run, his 11th of the year, to left center field in the bottom of the second inning. Nate Baez matched him with a line drive solo shot into the Wind Surge bullpen two frames later to give the Wind Surge a 2-0 lead.

Michael Arroyo drove in the first run for Arkansas on a single to center in the top of the fifth. Josh Hood gave the Travelers a 3-2 advantage on a two-run shot to left center in the next inning.

Rosario swatted a high-arcing home run onto the left field berm in the home half of the sixth to tie the game. Ben Ross put Wichita back in front with a 5-3 lead on a two-RBI double near the left field line. Baez worked a bases-loaded walk after the stretch in the seventh to make it a three-run game.&nbsp;

WICHITA, Kan. (August 30, 2025)—Five runs over the first two innings paced the Wichita Wind Surge to a 5-2 win over the Arkansas Travelers at Equity Bank Park. The win was the fifth in a row for the Wind Surge, who remain in third place of the Texas League North, two games back of Tulsa for a playoff spot.&nbsp;

Wichita came out swinging early with three runs coming on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Kaelen Culpepper scored on a fielder’s choice, then Andrew Cossetti and Jake Rucker brought home a run each on singles to left and right field.&nbsp;Kala’i Rosario and Hendry Mendez followed with run-scoring singles in the home half of the second to give the Wind Surge a 5-0 lead.

Caleb Cali crushed a solo shot to left field to open the third and get Arkansas on the board. Bill Knight made it a three-run game after a sacrifice fly to right in the top of the sixth.

Wichita Wins Fifth Straight Versus Arkansas

WICHITA, Kan. (August 29, 2025)—Five Wichita Wind Surge pitchers combine for the team’s 11th shutout of the year in a 3-0 win for the team over the Arkansas Travelers at Equity Bank Park. 

The win marked the fourth straight for the Wind Surge, who remain in third place of the Texas League North, two games back of Tulsa for a playoff spot.&nbsp;

After neither team could put anything up on the scoreboard for the first three frames, Jake Rucker lined a three-run home run onto the berm in left field to give Wichita a 3-0 lead.&nbsp;

C.J. Culpepper threw five innings of three-hit baseball with two walks and four strikeouts in his 13th start of the season. That would be enough for his second consecutive win of the season to improve to a 2-1 record.&nbsp;

Michael Martinez, John Stankiewicz, Hunter Hoopes, and Kade Bragg all threw an inning each after Culpepper’s night wrapped up. Martinez gave up the last Travelers hit all night in the top of the sixth, as the latter three allowed just one man to reach the rest of the evening. 

Bragg struck out Jared Sundstrom for the final out in the top of the ninth, earning his third Double-A save.&nbsp;

OPENING STATEMENT:&nbsp;“All right, so we look forward to the challenge of playing the Chargers. It's obviously, it's in Brazil. We look forward to traveling south there and having an opportunity to play internationally. It's quite a privilege. So, we're kind of rounding the team out now as we put all the pieces together for (a) practice squad. And then finalizing that part of it so we can get underway. Today is an off day for the players and very similar to a Monday. And then we'll start a normal week here starting tomorrow and get ourselves ready to travel on Wednesday. And then Thursday we'll have a walkthrough down in Brazil there. And then you play on Friday. So, we're one week away from it. We’re again looking forward to putting this week together here. Anyways, I don't have any injuries. Jalen (Royals) continues to work to get himself better. Yeah, there's – we'll see how it goes, I mean it'll be a, it'd be a real rush for this week for sure. So, it doesn’t look like he'll probably make (it) this week, but should be ready to go as we go down the road here. So anyways, with that time is yours.”

Q: Are there any more little details that you're trying to implement into the team to make the game in Brazil as routine as possible?

REID:&nbsp;“Sure. So, if you take tomorrow and just pretend like it's a Tuesday, today would be a Monday, tomorrow’s a Tuesday, or we'll go through the week off of that type of a schedule, and then we'll just block out that Wednesday as a travel day. I mean, it's a ten-hour plus trip there. So that one we’ll just give to the airlines. And then we'll go ahead and pick it back up on Thursday down there and do the walkthrough part of it. And then the rest of it will stay consistent. We'll try to keep the times consistent. There's only a two-hour difference. So, we should be able to keep things, you know, relatively consistent going forward.”

Q: On JuJu Smith-Schuster stepping up and filling in for Rashee Rice.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah. Well, JuJu (Smith-Schuster) had a great camp and is and I mean he mentioned (it to) you guys, he's in the best shape he's been in in a long time. So, he feels very good, and we have a lot of trust in him. But most of all, Patrick (Mahomes) has a lot of trust in him. So yeah, no he can fill in that that role for sure. And then you've got a healthy Hollywood (Brown) that can play for you and Ty (Tyquan Thornton) came out and had a good camp for us. So, you know he's another one.”

Q: What was your reaction and thoughts to hearing Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s engagement?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, Jesse (Newell) listen, I'm happy for them. You know – it’s hard to find somebody that you fall in love with, and that's not an easy thing, and to really fall in love. And it seems like they're there and I think it's a great, great deal for both of them. And they like being around each other and you know, that’s a plus, I think. They're both busy people in their own right. And both are very famous in their own right. So, it's kind of neat to see that they come together and handle themselves the way they do.”

Q:&nbsp;Since we last chatted with you, Rashee Rice’s suspension has been made official. What's just been the process of preparing for both scenarios, particularly Week 1?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, Sam (McDowell), you know, we had an idea that something was going to happen, whether it was now or later, it doesn't necessarily matter, but something was going to happen and it would probably be around that six game area. And so, we went about business full steam ahead (and) rotated guys in. Everybody got a chance to play that will have an opportunity to play here. And so, I think it was good for Rashee (Rice) to get the practice in, he'll be away for three weeks, and then he’ll be back in the building after that, to be able to work out here and just do everything but not practice so, and then we'll get him back in the – after six weeks. But we've got guys that are capable of playing here that, we just have to go out and do it. Not that you don't miss, Rashee. I mean, he's a heck of a football player, but we have, we have other guys that are good players, too.”

Q:&nbsp;What stands out about the camp that Rashee Rice did have though?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, he had a real good camp who kept himself in the right frame of mind of where he could work. He wasn't moping around. Stayed positive. He's trying to do the right things, first of all, I've mentioned somewhere that you know, Rashee’s (Rice) got a real good heart. You know, it's unfortunate that it happened. Thank goodness people weren't hurt obviously, but lesson learned. And you move on and try to, try to move ahead. You know, in a positive manner. And so far, he's done a nice job with that.”

Q:&nbsp;On the impact of game planning when trying to figure out if Rashee Rice is suspended.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, sure, and I think we were okay with it because of the rotation that we had going, we were prepared for it. We don't have to change a lot of things moving forward and what we put in the game plan. As far as their part goes, you know, last year, our first game against them, they were missing one of their big players on defense. You know they made their adjustments that they need to make in life, life moved on. So, they're familiar with how to handle situations like this too. In the NFL, Soren (Petro), as you know man, you got to be ready for change. Changes happen rapidly and whether it's an injury or a suspension or some of that, or you gotta be ready to go and still play at a high level. So our guys are excited to play and keep going on this thing.”

Q:&nbsp;Does this travel situation bring out the best in teams?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think it’s a little bit of a frame of mind. I think if you say you're being honored to actually do this, because you're doing well, that's the way you approach it. It's an honor to have an overseas game and to be able to go to Brazil. And then as opposed to, ‘oh my gosh, what are they giving us?’ You know that attitude didn't get you anywhere. So, you take the schedule and you turn that same thing into a positive. Plus, to play these teams – some of these teams, well most of them in this league are just tremendous football teams and the parity and it's crazy. So, it really doesn't matter who you're playing or really when you're playing, you just take in and you roll. They're doing the same thing you're doing.”

Q: What’s the key to setting a tempo in the first week and month of the season?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, well, it’s always good to come off and get a good start for sure. I think all 32 of us (NFL teams) are trying to do that, (to) come out of the gates and play well. However, when they say – you use that O-line mastermind thing, and you say you’d better take every week as it’s own separate thing, and you better keep pounding as you go through the year. But you sure would like to come out and play well, I mean, for sure.”

Q: How long do you feel it takes for a team to build an identity?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, normally it takes a couple of weeks, Nick (Jacobs). And I think that’s probably for most teams. Now we’ve got a lot of guys coming back, so maybe that cuts it down a little bit. But just to get yourself in rhythm and now you’re taking it up a notch from what you were doing in training camp. And so sometimes you (have) got to work through that just a tick, but it should be okay there.”

Q: What’s your anticipation level for Josh Simmons playing left tackle in a regular season game?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, Todd (Leabo), I think we just let him (Josh Simmons) go, get him out here, (and) let him get this experience going forward. This group’s (Los Angeles Chargers) got two good defensive ends, and so it’ll be a nice challenge for him. And I’ll probably be saying that every week through the season here, but it’s his first year, so there are going to be things that he hasn’t seen before, and he’s got to fight through that. But he’s a talented kid and he’s willing – he wants to do well, and he has worked very hard. He’s worked very hard to get himself into this position right here to be the starter. I told you after training camp, my hat goes off to the kid. He didn’t miss a day, from the time he started in the OTAs (and) throughout this camp where he’s tried to bear down. There’ll be some things in there, some hiccups in there, I’m sure, but he sure is willing to play.”

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, I know Kinglsey (Suamataia) has worked very hard this offseason. He feels comfortable in there at that spot (left guard), but I’ll tell you it’s new (for him) and there’s going to be things in there. He seems to be working well with Creed (Humphrey) and Josh (Simmons), but again this is a good defense (Los Angeles Chargers), (they were) one of the top defenses in the league last year, and now they’ve got to step into that and play good football. And so that’s what we’re going to practice each week here, and hopefully the continuity continues to grow there with the three of them (Kingsley Suamataia, Josh Simmons, Creed Humphrey).

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Warren Corman, a fixture in the rich history of the Kansas Athletics and University of Kansas architecture, died August 28, in Lawrence, the Corman family informed KU officials. The last of the seven architects that built Allen Fieldhouse to pass, Corman was 99 years old.

A KU men’s basketball season ticket holder for more than 60 years, Corman, and his wife, Mary, were regulars at both football and men’s basketball weekly Hawk Talk radio shows and deeply passionate about the Jayhawks.

We will miss his amazing stories and his passion for KU but cherish the time we have had with him. The KU Athletics' family sends our love and condolences to Mary and the entire family."Corman was the youngest of the architects on the Allen Fieldhouse project. The others included James Canole, Frank Johnson, Charles Marshall, Robert Jokish, Robert Schober, and Thornton Beck. Six of Kansas’ eight all-time coaches played their home contests in Allen Fieldhouse and all developed a relationship with Corman.“Warren Corman played an integral role in what Kansas basketball is today as one the architects who designed Allen Fieldhouse,” Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self said. “Cindy and I truly enjoyed getting to know Warren and Mary over the years and listening to Warren tell stories about his role with the University. He had such a wealth of knowledge about everything KU. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary and his family.“KU lost a treasure in Warren.”A 1950 architecture engineering graduate from KU who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Corman had a major impact on the learning environment encountered by the state's college students. In 1966, he was recruited by the Kansas Board of Regents to be director of facilities, a position he held for 31 years. During his tenure, Corman worked with all the regents institutions, overseeing planning and construction on more than 300 construction projects, valued at more than $500 million.Corman also was instrumental in two public policy actions that continue to serve Kansans: the State Building Advisory Committee, which greatly reduced the opportunity for corruption, and Crumbling Classrooms, widely recognized as the single most important facilities repair-and-rehabilitation funding project in regents history.
