Early this morning, Friday, April 26, a 21-year-old Salina woman died in a single-vehicle crash on Belmont Avenue after striking a curb at high speeds. The vehicle's passenger continues treatment for critical wounds at Salina Regional Health Center.

Salina Police Department (SPD) Sgt. Chad McCary said a Salina resident reported the wreck around 12:36 a.m. near 2242 Mayfair Drive.&nbsp;

When officers arrived, they found a white 2012 Jaguar passenger vehicle with the driver's side of the car smashed into a tree.

"We've surmised from being at the scene that the vehicle was southbound on Belmont&nbsp;—&nbsp;obviously&nbsp;at a high speed," McCary said.&nbsp;"The vehicle tried to negotiate the curve, it couldn't, and struck the west curb and hit an Evergy power pole on the southwest corner of Mayfair and Belmont."

McCary said the impact severed the pole from its base in the ground, requiring Evergy to fix the power pole this morning.

The vehicle rotated and hit the tree after the Jaguar struck the power pole. Once emergency services arrived, they pronounced the 21-year-old driver dead at the scene and found the 22-year-old passenger with serious injuries.

"The front-seat passenger&nbsp;was extricated&nbsp;immediately after EMS got there and&nbsp;was transported&nbsp;to Salina Regional Health Center, where she remains," McCary said. "She's in critical condition."

McCary said he was unsure if the passenger was wearing a seatbelt, but emergency responders found the driver with a seatbelt in place.

SPD officers continue to investigate the crash.

Crash on Belmont Avenue kills driver, leaves passenger in critical condition

The Kansas Wesleyan community is still celebrating the events of April 20’s Scholarship Gala, when the university announced more than $2.7 million in gifts and pledges. It was the single-largest fundraising night in school history, highlighted by a million-dollar gift from Dr. Kent Cox ’65 and wife Adrienne.&nbsp;

Cox was part of the “Gang of Eight,” a well-known group of Physics students from the classes of 1964 and 1965. The group has helped shape support for the sciences, athletics and even the building of the Student Activities Center. Cox was an integral part of those efforts, including contributions to the Creager Physics Lab and the Stucky Optics Lab in honor of two of his professors.&nbsp;

Cox and one of the group’s other leaders, Dr. David Fancher ’64, remain close friends to this day.&nbsp;

“After I graduated from Salina High School, KWU offered me a full tuition scholarship,” recalled Cox. “While it was not my first choice, my lifelong friend – Dr. David Fancher – strongly encouraged me to attend KWU. I quickly began to appreciate what a wonderful educational opportunity I had received, and to this day, I believe that my professors were lifelong examples for learning, achieving and contributing. It is our hope that this gift provides those same opportunities for students in the coming years.”

The Coxes’ gift is believed to be the sixth million-dollar gift by an individual or family in KWU history, five of which have come in the last five years. It is believed, however, to be the first-such gift to be bolstered by the rise of cryptocurrency.&nbsp;

“KWU is deeply thankful to Kent and Adrienne Cox for their support,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “Their gift will open doors for future Coyotes and enable STEM-focused students to realize their educational goals. It is our hope that their leadership will inspire others to lift up programs, disciplines and opportunities that can fuel the next generation of KWU greats.”

The gift is in support of Kansas students pursuing careers in science, medicine and nursing.&nbsp;

Kent ’65 and Adrienne Cox reflect on million-dollar gift

Between Monday, April 8, 2024, at 4:00 PM and Tuesday, April 9, 2024, an unknown suspect(s) broke out a window on a Superior Contracting &amp; Manufacturing work van&nbsp;which&nbsp;was&nbsp;parked&nbsp;in the 2700 of Tim Rogers Lane, Salina, Kansas.

Upon gaining entry to the van numerous tools&nbsp;were&nbsp;stolen. Some of the tools included all Milwaukee tools, which included a battery fast charger, a battery-powered Knockout set, 2 battery-powered staplers, and additional batteries. Total&nbsp;loss&nbsp;was valued&nbsp;at $2,989.

Richard “Dick” Henry Rawson July 12, 1950 ~&nbsp;April 23, 2024

Richard “Dick” Henry Rawson, 73, of Marquette, KS, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, surrounded by family at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

Dick was born on July 12, 1950, in Lindsborg, KS, the son of Floyd Albert and Nyla Laurine (Hendershot) Rawson. He graduated from Marquette High School in 1968 and attended Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; On November 5, 1989, Dick was united in marriage to Bobbie Kay Long in Marquette.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dick retired from Johns Manville in McPherson where he was a machine chief.&nbsp; Following retirement from Johns Manville, he worked at McPherson Quick Lube and Rusty Bucket Liquor in Marquette.&nbsp; He also enjoyed farming and raising cattle on the side.

He was a member of the Marquette United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Bobbie; three children, Gwen Klepper (Jeff) of Ellinwood, KS, Kristen Leatherwood (Ryan) of Wister, OK, and Nic Rawson (Brittany) of Lyons, KS; brothers, John “Bill” Rawson (Louise) of Marquette, KS and Robert “Bob” Rawson (Diana) of Marquette, KS; sisters, Peggy Geiman of Marquette, KS and Patsy Morgan (Allan) of Cheyenne, WY; eight grandchildren, Lane, Ashtin, Grant, Jude, Clay, Kadee, Harrison, and Quinten; mother-in-law, Bertha “Bert” Long of Windom, KS; and many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Roy Long; and brother-in-law, Dean Geiman.

A Celebration of Life (come &amp; go) will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; The final resting place will be in Marquette Cemetery.

Bolivia M. Thompson March 6, 1947 ~&nbsp;April 24, 2024

Bolivia M. Thompson, 77 years of age, of Concordia passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Marquis Place in Concordia, Kansas. She was born on March 6, 1947, in Greenville, South Carolina to Theodore J. and Willa M. (Spearman) Lewis.&nbsp;

Bolivia was a 1966 graduate of Concordia High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bolivia then went on to receive her LPN Degree from the Kaw Valley Vo-Tech in 1968.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was part of the first graduating class.

She married Bill Thompson and they later divorced.

She was a past member of the First United Methodist Church, NAGE (Union) where she held the position of secretary for nine years.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.

Bolivia worked as an LPN for the Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka, Kansas for 31 years and retired in 2002.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While at the VA Hospital Bolivia worked in three different departments, Nursing, Pharmacy and Quality Assurance.

She enjoyed bowling where she was a member of two different bowling leagues, watching game shows and doing crossword puzzles.&nbsp;&nbsp;Most of all she loved spending time with her beloved family and friends.

Bolivia is survived by her caregivers, Pam and Bob Huber, Brandi and Mike Hake, Drake and Chelsea Hake and their children Conley (CK) and Wesley, Eastan Hake and Stryker Hake, many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Willa Mae Lewis, her son, Kevin R. Thompson, and an infant sister.

A visitation will be held on Monday, May 6, 2024, from 1-8 p.m. at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, in Concordia.

A Celebration of Life graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the Topeka Cemetery, Topeka, Kansas.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs traded up to select Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy with the No. 28 pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night, giving Patrick Mahomes the kind of speedy deep threat they have not enjoyed since Tyreek Hill was on the roster.

The Chiefs were supposed to pick last in the first round after winning their second consecutive Super Bowl and third in five years, but they managed to trade up with one of their biggest AFC rivals in Buffalo. The Chiefs sent the 32nd pick along with a fourth-rounder and seventh-rounder to the Bills for No. 28, a fourth-rounder and a seventh-rounder.

“Listen, I like the wide receivers we've got,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, “but to go add somebody of this quality is important, or a good move to strengthen it. I don't want to slight the guys we have but he's a nice addition.”

So nice that Mahomes, who was attending a gala in New York, instantly took to social media to approve of it.

“We told Patrick," Reid said with a smile. “Patrick is curious. He loves this stuff. It doesn't matter if it's offense or defense. He just loves the draft. He's texting away at us and we get back to him. He's great with it.”

Worthy broke the NFL combine record when he ran a 4.21-second 40-yard dash, exhibiting the kind of raw speed that Kansas City last enjoyed when Hill was on the team. But Worthy is more than just a deep threat, showing promise as a route runner and cutting down on the number of drops last season, when he caught 75 passes for 1,014 yards and five TDs.

“It doesn’t hurt to have down-the-field speed,” Reid said. “We’ve functioned without the great speed down the field and done well, but if you have an opportunity to get somebody you think is a good player, you probably need to take advantage of that.”

The Chiefs won the Super Bowl last year with a patchwork wide receiver corps, and they were in the market for help even before second-year pro Rashee Rice — their biggest breakout star of last season — got embroiled in legal trouble in Texas.

Dallas police allege that Rice was driving a Lamborghini well over 100 mph when he and a friend, who was driving a Corvette, lost control and began a chain-reaction crash that resulted in injuries to several people. Rice left the scene without seeing if anyone was injured, but turned himself in when police issued warrants for his arrest.

Rice has been released on bond, and Reid has said he would continue to participate in the Chiefs' offseason program as the legal situation plays out. But the Chiefs must prepare for the possibility they will be without him for at least the first part of the season — if not the entire season — as they try to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

“It's a quarterback league and a speed game,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said, “and the more speed you have on the field, the harder it is for defenses to take away different elements of the game. We have a couple of guys now that can keep a defense guessing, and we're excited about what this will do.”

The Chiefs signed Hollywood Brown in free agency, and tight end Travis Kelce has been every bit as productive as any wide receiver. But otherwise, the Chiefs were faced with heading into the summer with Justin Watson, drop-prone Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore, and journeymen such as Montrell Washington filling out the receiver corps.

So the trade to get Worthy wasn't a surprise. But the fact that the Bills picked up the phone raised some eyebrows.

Along with the fact that Kansas City has frequently ended their season in the playoffs, the Chiefs also swung a memorable first-round trade with them in 2017: They sent Buffalo their first- and third-round picks that year and a first-round pick the next year to move up to No. 10 and select Mahomes, which ultimately altered the trajectory of the entire franchise.

“Everyone goes into the process with their own list of priorities of what they want to do and what they want to accomplish,” Veach said. “I think they had a mindset of what they wanted to do. They've done a great job over the years. I'm sure it made sense to them. We were on our own agenda. We saw value there.”

🏈 Chiefs trade up with Bills to select WR Xavier Worthy at No. 28 in NFL draft

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Thursday appeared likely to reject former President Donald Trump’s claim of absolute immunity from prosecution over election interference, but several justices signaled reservations about the charges that could cause a lengthy delay, possibly beyond November’s election.

A majority of the justices did not appear to embrace the claim of absolute immunity that would stop special counsel Jack Smith's prosecution of Trump on charges he conspired to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. But in arguments lasting more than 2 1/2 hours in the court’s first consideration of criminal charges against a former president, several conservative justices indicated they could limit when former presidents might be prosecuted, suggesting that the case might have to be sent back to lower courts before any trial could begin.

Justice Samuel Alito said that “whatever we decide is going to apply to all future presidents.”

The timing of the Supreme Court’s decision could be as important as the outcome. Trump, the presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee, has been pushing to delay the trial until after the election, and the later the justices issue their decision, the more likely he is to succeed. If Trump regains the presidency, he could order the Justice Department to dismiss the case, or possibly, as two justices suggested, pardon himself if convicted.

Since conservatives on the court gained a supermajority with the confirmation of three Trump appointees, they have cast aside decades-old long precedent on abortion and affirmation action. Now Trump is asking them to rule that one of the fundamental tenets of the American system of government — that no person is above the law -- should be rejected as well, at least as it applies to him.

The active questioning of all nine justices left the strong impression that the court was not headed for the sort of speedy, consensus decision that would allow a trial to begin quickly.

Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, two of Trump’s three high court appointees, and Alito said their concern was not the case against Trump, but rather the effect of their ruling on future presidencies.

Each time Justice Department lawyer Michael Dreeben sought to focus on Trump’s actions, these justices jumped in. “This case has huge implications for the presidency, for the future of the presidency, for the future of the country,” Kavanaugh said. The court is writing a decision “for the ages,” Gorsuch said.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett, the other Trump appointee, seemed less open to arguments advanced by Trump lawyer D. John Sauer, searching for a way a trial could take place.

Smith’s team is asking for a speedy resolution. The court typically issues its last opinions by the end of June, about four months before the election. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who would preside over the trial, said pre-trial issues could take up to three months.

The court has moved very quickly in prior cases involving presidential power, deciding the Watergate tapes case against President Richard Nixon just 16 days after arguments. Earlier this year, it took the justices less than a month to rule unanimously that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-trump-insurrection-election-colorado-51e79c0f03013034c8a042cb278b6446">states couldn't kick Trump off the ballot</a>.

Trump, the first former president charged with crimes, had said he wanted to be at the Supreme Court on Thursday. Instead, he was in a courtroom in New York, where he is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-hush-money-trial-national-enquirer-1dd3c3111febf219bdf1d8627504a3c5">standing trial</a>&nbsp;on charges that he falsified business records to keep damaging information from voters when he directed hush money payments to a former porn star to keep quiet her claims that they had a sexual encounter.

Sauer argued that former presidents are entitled to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-trump-immunity-prosecution-capitol-riot-9fd5dc5947dab82bbd18d3efcb4267d8">absolute immunity</a>&nbsp;for their official acts. Otherwise, he said, politically motivated prosecutions of former occupants of the Oval Office would become routine and presidents couldn't function as the commander in chief if they had to worry about criminal charges.

Lower courts have rejected those arguments, including a unanimous three-judge panel on an appeals court in Washington, D.C.

Several justices drilled down on trying to come up with a definition of what constituted an official act, and whether charges based on one should be thrown out.

Justice Elena Kagan at one pointed wondered whether a former president could escape prosecution even if he ordered a coup or sold nuclear secrets. Sauer said prosecutions might not be allowed it those were determined to be official acts.

“That sure sounds bad, doesn't it?” Kagan asked.

Chief Justice John Roberts conjured up a president being indicted for receiving a bribe in exchange for an ambassadorial appointment. How could the indictment go forward if prosecutors had to remove the official act, the appointment. “That's like a one-legged stool, right?” Roberts asked.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-indictments-election-january-6-classified-documents-5cb04868bb1cdf91c19eafdb882af8c0">election interference conspiracy case</a>&nbsp;brought by Smith in Washington is just one of four criminal cases confronting Trump. Smith was in the courtroom Thursday, seated at the table for lawyers taking part in the case.

Smith’s team says the men who wrote Constitution never intended for presidents to be above the law and that, in any event, the acts Trump is charged with — including participating in a scheme to enlist&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-jan-6-investigation-fake-electors-608932d4771f6e2e3c5efb3fdcd8fcce">fake electors in battleground states</a>&nbsp;won by Biden — aren’t in any way part of a president’s official duties. Dreeben said that even if some of the acts are considered part of the president's powers, like talking to Justice Department officials, they still should be kept in the indictment.

Trump's conversations with then-Vice President Mike Pence, urging him to reject some electoral votes on Jan. 6, 2021, might also fall under official acts.

Barrett asked Dreeben whether Smith's team could “just proceed based on the private conduct and drop the official conduct.” Dreeben said that might be possible, especially if prosecutors could, for example, use the conversations with Justice Department officials and Pence to make their case.

Nearly four years ago, all nine justices rejected Trump’s claim of absolute immunity from a district attorney’s subpoena for his financial records. That case played out during Trump’s presidency and involved a criminal investigation, but no charges.

Justice Clarence Thomas, who would have prevented the enforcement of the subpoena because of Trump’s responsibilities as president, still rejected Trump’s claim of absolute immunity and pointed to the text of the Constitution and how it was understood by the people who ratified it.

“The text of the Constitution … does not afford the President absolute immunity,” Thomas wrote in 2020.

Commentators had speculated about why the court took up the case in the first place.

Phillip Bobbitt, a constitutional scholar at Columbia University’s law school, said he worries about the delay, but sees value in a decision that amounts to “a definitive expression by the Supreme Court that we are a government of laws and not of men.”

The court also may be more concerned with how its decision could affect future presidencies, Harvard law school professor Jack Goldsmith wrote on the Lawfare blog.

But Kermit Roosevelt, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said the court never should have taken the case because an ideologically diverse panel of the federal appeals court in Washington adequately addressed the issues.

“If it was going to take the case, it should have proceeded faster, because now, it will most likely prevent the trial from being completed before the election,” Roosevelt said. “Even Richard Nixon said that the American people deserve to know whether their president is a crook. The Supreme Court seems to disagree.”

The court has several options for deciding the case, though something between a complete win for Trump or prosecutors seemed most likely.

The court might spell out when former presidents are shielded from prosecution. It could then either declare that Trump's alleged conduct easily crossed the line or return the case to Chutkan so she can decide whether Trump should have to stand trial.

Noeline Carla Miller-Chestnut, age 75, of Salina, Kansas, passed away on April 22, 2024, at home. She was born on July 23, 1948, in Salina, Kansas, the daughter of the late Katherine Lucille Brubaker (Buttermore) and Carl Coleman Miller.

Noeline was a hard working woman of strength and compassion, known for her kindness and generosity. She was a graduate of Salina High School, Class of 1965, and went on to work at several nursing homes as dietary cooks, then later at REMA Bakeware in the production department and finally at Russell-Stover Candy in Abilene before retiring.

Noeline fell in love with Chet Chestnut and married on June 25, 1988. They enjoyed almost 25 years of cherished married life together. Noeline was dedicated to taking care of her family and was an amazing wife, Mom and Grandma. She enjoyed camping, fishing, playing pinochle with family, working in her garden, and listening to audio books.

Noeline is survived by her loving daughter, Tina Zahn (Nathan) of Wichita, KS; stepdaughters Tracy Chestnut and Heather Chestnut, both of Omaha, NE; stepson Darryl Chestnut, of Omaha, NE. She is also survived by her grandchildren Natlie and Brandon Zahn, as well as step-grandchildren Dwayne Orth, Kit Chestnut, Christopher Driscoll, Tyler and Nicole Petri, Brittney Buckingham, Matthew, Wyatt and Audrey Chestnut and Teah Dunlop, and 12 step-great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Anita Morris (Kevin), of Salina, and brother David Miller of Evansville, IN and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Noeline was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chester L. Chestnut, on March 17, 2013, an infant son Daniel, as well as her brother, Carl Coleman Miler II, and sister, Karen Sneary. She leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Noeline's life will be held on May 4, 2024, at First Church of the Nazarene on South Ohio Street in Salina, KS. Friends and family are invited to join in remembering Noeline and offering their final farewells. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice in memory of Noeline are greatly appreciated.

Noeline will be deeply missed but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

The latest episode of “Wheat’s on Your Mind” is a podcast about a podcast. More specifically, what started as a podcast to teach Brazilian farmers about American agriculture has evolved into a venture that connects people who want to push the boundaries of knowledge about agriculture.&nbsp;

Agro Connection is a team of young Brazilian agriculture scientists that produce podcasts and social media and guide specialized international agriculture tours. Harries sat down with Carlos Pires, one of the founders of Agro Connection, to learn more about the origins of this information-sharing work and a recent trip the group organized for members of the Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership (KARL) program to dive deep into the heart of Brazilian agriculture.&nbsp;

The award-winning podcast started as a random thought discussed between friends over a beer. Today, Agro Connection bills itself as an international information portal that connects people who want to push the frontiers of knowledge about agriculture. Agro Connections is an award-winning podcast with&nbsp;more than&nbsp;9,000 downloads of 37 episodes in less than two years. Its YouTube videos have reached 4,600 subscribers and nearly 200,000 views. The group also runs two WhatsApp groups for about 500 Brazilian farmers, answering their daily questions about American agriculture, including crop rotations, soil fertility applications, inputs and technologies.&nbsp;

“There’s a lot of good information out there that we can take back to our country, so that was the main goal,” Pires said. “The idea was communication because I have a passion for that. My dream was always to find a position as a professor in research and extension, and the podcast was just part of that — a way I found to&nbsp;be connected&nbsp;with farmers in my country.”

As an extension of this communications effort, Agro Connection started connecting Brazilian and American farmers — first by taking Brazilians working or studying in the United States to visit farms. More recently, they flipped that work to taking Americans to Brazil, including the Kansas Agricultural and Rural Leadership Program.&nbsp;

“Brazil is one of the leaders in the use of biologicals and regenerative agriculture, so we have a lot of long-term notes with years and years of cover crops and very healthy soils,” Pires said. “So, we want to take Americans there to spend some time.”&nbsp;

Pires&nbsp;was raised&nbsp;in southern Brazil, where several of his family members work in agronomy, tracing back to the original family member who immigrated from Italy to Brazil. He recently received his doctorate in agronomy and soil science from Kansas State University and will take the next step in his career this summer at North Dakota State University. The effort started in 2017 and&nbsp;was designed&nbsp;to bridge the gap between wheat farmers and consumers. In this podcast episode, Marsha Boswell, Kansas Wheat vice president of communications, walked Harries through how this wheat industry effort uses innovative strategies and platforms to educate consumers about wheat, its benefits and the farming process.

“For many years, wheat farmers have done a good job of telling what the health benefits of wheat foods are — folic acid, vitamins and minerals, a lot of that type of information,” Boswell said. “But what we haven’t always done is tell the story of how that wheat gets to your plate and the farmers that grow it. The main reason for EatWheat is to connect consumers and farmers with the food, how it’s grown, how it gets to them — that’s what we’re trying to accomplish with this program.”&nbsp;

“Within these rare cases, there’s a significant number where the woman’s life is not in peril, but she’s going to lose her reproductive organs. She’s going to lose the ability to have children in the future unless an abortion takes place,” said Justice Elena Kagan.

Conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett, meanwhile, said she was “kind of shocked” that an attorney for Idaho appeared to hedge when asked whether the state would allow abortions in cases like those. Attorney Joshua N. Turner responded that doctors can use their “good faith” medical judgment under Idaho's life-saving exception, but Barrett continued to press: “What if the prosecutor thinks differently?”

Turner acknowledged that a doctor could face a criminal case in that situation. Performing an abortion outside of limited exceptions in Idaho is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
