SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect in connection with a stolen vehicle.

On Thursday afternoon, police&nbsp;officers on patrol located a stolen vehicle in the area of SE 5th and Liberty in Topeka, according to Lt. Edward Stanley.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver of the vehicle initiated a pursuit. The pursuit ended in the 3600 block of SE 6th, where the driver fled on foot. 

Police eventually located the driver later identified as 35-year-old Vashawn M. Fitzpatrick at SE 7th and Brookside in Topeka, and took him into custody without incident.&nbsp;

Fitzpatrick was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Possession of Stolen property, Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Flee or Attempt to Elude and Criminal Damage to Property.

Fitzpatrick has previous convictions for voluntary sexual intercourse with a minor, burglary, theft, drugs and attempt to elude law enforcement, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Police catch Kansas felon after chase with stolen vehicle

LINCOLN — The Nebraska State Patrol arrested multiple people during incidents at the Nebraska State Capitol Building during legislative debate over abortion rights and transgender affirming care Friday afternoon, according to a media release from the patrol.

Just after 2:30p.m. during the legislative debate, multiple observers in the opponent balcony began yelling. Two individuals threw objects over the balcony onto the legislative floor. Those individuals, Lucia Salinas, 24, of Omaha, and Maghie Miller-Jenkins, 36, of Lincoln, were arrested for obstructing a government operation and disturbing the peace. Another individual was yelling repeatedly and refused law enforcement orders to leave the balcony. That individual, identified as Mar Lee, 25, of Lincoln, was arrested for disturbing the peace and trespassing.&nbsp;

The legislature’s presiding officer, Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly, order that the balconies be cleared for the remainder of the debate. On the proponent balcony, a woman refused to leave. Troopers gave repeated orders to vacate the balcony, but the woman did not comply. Danna Seevers, 56, of Seward, was arrested for disobeying a lawful order.

At approximately 3:25 p.m., a trooper observed a person intentionally preventing a legislative Sgt. At Arms from opening a door in the rear of the legislative chamber. The trooper told the man to leave the area. The man was non-compliant. The trooper then ordered the man to vacate the capitol. The man again refused to comply. The trooper attempted to place the man under arrest and the subject resisted. Another trooper arrived to assist taking the subject into custody. The man, Benjamin Buras, 40, of Lincoln, was arrested for resisting arrest and trespassing.

As troopers were attempting to take Buras into custody, a woman approached and tried to push past another trooper. The trooper held her back, at which time the woman punched the trooper in the chest. She was immediately taken into custody. Sara Crawford, 33, of Lincoln, was arrested for obstructing a peace officer. All six were booked into Lancaster County Jail.

The Nebraska Legislature later passed a bill that combines a 12-week abortion ban with restrictions on gender-affirming care for minors.&nbsp;

Two individuals threw objects over the balcony onto the legislative floor. Those individuals, Lucia Salinas, 24, of Omaha, and Maghie Miller-Jenkins, 36, of Lincoln, were arrested for obstructing a government operation and disturbing the peace. Another individual was yelling repeatedly and refused law enforcement orders to leave the balcony. That individual, identified as Mar Lee, 25, of Lincoln, was arrested for disturbing the peace and trespassing.&nbsp;The legislature’s presiding officer, Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly, order that the balconies be cleared for the remainder of the debate. On the proponent balcony, a woman refused to leave. Troopers gave repeated orders to vacate the balcony, but the woman did not comply. Danna Seevers, 56, of Seward, was arrested for disobeying a lawful order.At approximately 3:25 p.m., a trooper observed a person intentionally preventing a legislative Sgt. At Arms from opening a door in the rear of the legislative chamber. The trooper told the man to leave the area. The man was non-compliant. The trooper then ordered the man to vacate the capitol. The man again refused to comply. The trooper attempted to place the man under arrest and the subject resisted. Another trooper arrived to assist taking the subject into custody. The man, Benjamin Buras, 40, of Lincoln, was arrested for resisting arrest and trespassing.As troopers were attempting to take Buras into custody, a woman approached and tried to push past another trooper. The trooper held her back, at which time the woman punched the trooper in the chest. She was immediately taken into custody. Sara Crawford, 33, of Lincoln, was arrested for obstructing a peace officer. All six were booked into Lancaster County Jail.The Nebraska Legislature later passed a bill that combines a 12-week abortion ban with restrictions on gender-affirming care for minors.&nbsp;

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities continue investigating&nbsp; a gunfight near a bar early on Mother's Day that sent a victim to the hospital.

On Friday the Shawnee County Sheriff's office released additional details on their investigation of events.

Just after 2:15a.m. May 14, deputies with the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of multiple gunshots in the parking lot of Victoria’s Bar, 5011 SW Topeka Boulevard.

When law enforcement arrived, it was discovered that a 41-year-old man subject had engaged in a verbal altercation in the parking lot with a group of individuals associated with the Hell’s Lovers Motorcycle Club. Several shots were fired.&nbsp;

During the shooting, a vehicle that was arriving at the business to pick up an employee of the business was also fired upon. The driver of the vehicle, a 35-year-old man, was struck multiple times by gunfire, but managed to flee the scene. The vehicle was located a short time later in the 4500 block of SW Topeka Boulevard. The driver was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

In addition, at the time of the shooting, a separate individual that had not been inside the bar and not involved in the original altercation, was sitting in his vehicle in the business parking lot when the shooting began. That individual then exited his vehicle with a firearm and also began shooting at the vehicle that was ultimately located by law enforcement in the 4500 block of SW Topeka Boulevard. That individual was also taken into custody on requested charges of aggravated assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal discharge of a firearm.

On Wednesday, the sheriff's office reported four arrests.

Leon D. Smith-Love I., 28, of Topeka, is being held for aggravated assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal discharge of a firearm.

Kathryn R. Hazelwood, 26, of Topeka is being held on requested charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Charles D. Wheat, 42, of Topeka, is in custody on requested charges of&nbsp; aggravated assault and criminal discharge of a firearm.

Jason M. Blenden Sr., 49, of Topeka, was booked in on an arrest warrant and could face additional charges.

On Thursday the sheriff's office reported the arrest of Storm M. Morgan, 30, of Meriden, on requested charges of criminal discharge of a firearm.

Shawn M. Ray, 39, of Topeka, is in custody on requested charges of criminal discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault and interference with law enforcement.

Richard Thomas “Dick” Bedard, age 79, of Wichita, Kansas passed away May 16, 2023 at Wesley on Woodlawn in Wichita. He was born January the 14, 1944 in Hays , Kansas to Levi and O’della (Newell) Bedard. 

On December 30, 1965 he was united in marriage to Janelle Ann Lorbeer in St. Joseph’s Church in Hays. Dick was a longtime employee of Midwest Energy where he worked for 40 years. After retiring from Midwest Energy, he began working for Lowes in Wichita along with his wife, Janelle.

Dick was an avid KU Jayhawk, Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals fan and he enjoyed doing yard work.&nbsp; Dick was a man of strong faith whose family was important to him.&nbsp; 

He was a proud U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Saint Catherine of Siena in Wichita and a Knights of Columbus Third Degree member. Dick is survived by his wife, Janelle of Wichita; Son, Scott Bedard and wife Margaret of Wichita; daughter, Renee` Befort and husband Craig of Tulsa, OK; four sisters, Carol Bedard, of Leavenworth, KS, Michelle Beyer and husband Greg of Hays, Jeanette &nbsp;Howerton and husband Bob of Leavenworth, and Judy Koerner and husband Dave of Overland Park, KS; four grandchildren, Bret Befort, Kelsey Urban, Kristina Hopkins, and Brooke Teraberry as well as three great-grandchildren, Carson Urban, James Hopkins, and Kai Teraberry. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Fidelis “Dale” Bedard and Raymond Bedard. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Inurnment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Richard Thomas 'Dick' Bedard

Malachi Patrick Miller, 12, of Gorham, Kansas entered eternity Monday, May 1, 2023 at his home after battling a year long illness.

Malachi was born August 23, 2010 at his home, in a hurry to enter this world, as he arrived just minutes after the midwife rolled in. Malachi got to work immediately with his unique personality, sense of humor, and quick wit. He loved putting a smile on anyone’s face. Malachi was the fourth of six children who were affectionately known as the “Miller 6-pack.”&nbsp;

After losing his father to a similar illness at the age of 6, Malachi often spoke of looking forward to the day he was able to play with his daddy in Heaven.&nbsp;

While Malachi was only on this earth for 12 years, he lived life to the fullest every single day. He began playing the violin at age 4, the piano at age 6, and was singing from the moment he was born until he no longer had the ability to use his voice in his final days.&nbsp;

Malachi’s favorite sport was baseball. He had such a love for America’s pastime, that he was back on the field only 11 days following surgery for a spinal cord tumor (despite the doctor telling him he could not do so). Surgery initially left him unable to walk, but that did not stop Malachi’s determination to get back on the field. Malachi also had a love for the arts, especially the local theater productions. He got his big break in “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and went on to star in productions such as “The King and I,” “Rats! The Story of the Pied Piperl” and one of his all-time favorites, Hays Community Theatre’s 2022 summer production of “The Wizard of Oz.”&nbsp;

Malachi was a member of the Big Creek 4-H Club in Gorham where he served as a Song Leader, Recreation Leader, Reporter, and Parliamentarian throughout his 4-H career. Some of his favorite projects included Poultry, Dog Care &amp; Training, Shooting Sports, and Foods &amp; Nutrition. Malachi especially enjoyed learning how to properly handle and shoot a gun. He was also proud of his Grand Champion duck, Nibbles, who he made sure all the doctors and nurses knew about during his hospital stays. Malachi sang vocal solos at 4-H Days each year, and advanced to Regional Club Days 4 times, often being told his voice was “golden.”&nbsp;

Malachi was an award winning author, writing and illustrating four books for the PBS Kids Writers Contest. He enjoyed swimming, beginning lessons before he was 1 year old.

Malachi had a great love for animals and animals loved him in return. This past summer, he won Rooks County Grand Champion Overall Dog Agility, despite having lost function in his right arm. He also inherited his late father’s love of fishing.

In November, Malachi suffered a setback that left him paralyzed from the neck down along with a 7 week hospital stay at Children’s Hospital in Omaha. While there, he was given the opportunity to have his one true wish granted through the “Make A Wish” foundation. After serious thought, he asked for a shih tzu puppy and was granted this wish. He named his puppy, Agnes, and she arrived the day after Malachi got home from the hospital. He spent his final days snuggling with his faithful friend.

Malachi did not know a stranger. He had a gift for striking up a conversation with people of all ages. He made so many friends with nurses, doctors, rehab teams, and respiratory therapists while he was continuing his fight. So much so, many continued to keep in touch after Malachi returned home.&nbsp;

Malachi was a member of St. Philomena’s Chapel of Gorham where he was baptized, received his First Holy Communion, and was confirmed.&nbsp; He was an altar server. Learning his Latin responses was an important goal that he had been working towards this past year. He was never afraid to tell others about his Traditional Catholic faith. He lived through so many sufferings this past year, but was cheerful and could often be heard praying out loud from the confines of his hospital bed. He accepted his cross willingly, all for the love of Almighty God.

Malachi is survived by his mother, Jenna of the home, his 5 siblings, Conner (17), Christian (16), Janessa (14), Matthias (9), and Jenson (8), all of the home; Aunt, Mari Jo Stout, Plainville &amp; Gorham, Grandparents Will and Patti Stout, rural Natoma; Aunts &amp; Uncles Diana &amp; Derek Schutte, Halstead, Shane &amp; Michelle Stout, Kansas City, and Ryan &amp; Micah Becker, Russell; 13 cousins whom he loved dearly, and his special friend Kevin Eickhoff, Natoma.

He is preceded in death by his daddy, Dru Miller, grandparents Donnie &amp; Duane Miller, uncle, David Miller, and cousin Dyron Schutte.

A Solemn Requiem High Mass was be held at 10:30 AM May 8, 2023 at the Gorham Senior Center.&nbsp; Burial was at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Gorham.&nbsp; Visitation was held from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM May 7, 2023 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.&nbsp; A Vigil and Rosary were held at 7:00 PM May 7 at the Mortuary.&nbsp;The family has requested In Lieu of flowers a Memorial Fund has been established as Malachi Miller Memorial Fund. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas man accused in the abduction of a 14-year-old girl from Arkansas made another court appearance on Thursday.

David Roark, 35, Wichita,&nbsp; faces an additional count of sexual exploitation of a child, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In December he was charged with kidnapping, abuse of a child, 5 counts of rape or in the alternative 5 counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, electronic solicitation, and 8 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, according to the District Attorney's office.

Just after midnight Dec. 14, a detective with the White County, Arkansas Sheriff’s Office contacted Wichita Police requesting assistance locating a missing child from their jurisdiction, according to Officer Chad Ditch.

&nbsp; A 14-year-old girl had left her home in Arkansas in early November and not returned.&nbsp; A follow-up investigation by White County detectives revealed she had been <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=466582265583859&amp;set=pcb.461551719420247">seen in a convenience store</a> with a man before leaving in a vehicle with the same man later identified as 35-year-old&nbsp;David E. Roark of Wichita. Police also learned Roark was wanted on two warrants from the state of Kentucky.

Additional information provided by White County suggested that Roark was possibly in the Wichita area. 

The Wichita Police Exploited and Missing Child Unit and the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit began investigating and located an address in the 1800 block of N. Litchfield in Wichita, where they believed Roark was staying. 

Police observed Roark leaving the home and took him into custody. Officers then found the missing girl in a closet inside the house. Police took both of them for additional interviews, where it was discovered further crimes had occurred in Wichita.

A search warrant for the residence was completed, and David Roark was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. He remains jailed on&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20080133">$1.5 million dollar bond</a>, according to the district attorney's office.

Kan. man faces additional charge after abducted girl rescued from closet

NEW YORK (AP) —Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown, the unstoppable running back who retired at the peak of his brilliant career to become an actor as well as a prominent civil rights advocate during the 1960s, has died. He was 87.

A spokeswoman for Brown’s family said he passed away peacefully in his Los Angeles home on Thursday night with his wife, Monique, by his side.

One of the greatest players in football history and one of the game’s first superstars, Brown was chosen the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 1965 and shattered the league’s record books in a short career spanning 1957-65.

Brown led the Cleveland Browns to their last NFL title in 1964 before retiring in his prime after the ’65 season to become an actor. He appeared in more than 30 films, including “Any Given Sunday” and “The Dirty Dozen.”

An unstoppable runner with power, speed and endurance, Brown’s arrival sparked the game’s burgeoning popularity on television.

As Black Americans fought for equality, Brown used his platform and voice to advance their cause.

In 1967, Brown organized a meeting in Cleveland of the nation’s top Black athletes, including Bill Russell and Lew Alcindor, who later became Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, to support boxer Muhammad Ali’s fight against the war in Vietnam.

In later years, he worked to curb gang violence in LA and founded Amer-I-Can, a program to help disadvantaged inner-city youth and ex-convicts.

On the field, there was no one like Brown, who would blast through would-be tacklers, refusing to let one man take him down before sprinting away from linebackers and defensive backs. He was also famous for using a stiff arm to shed defenders in the open field or push them away like they were rag dolls.

“My arms were like my protectors and weapons,” Brown said during an interview with NFL Films.

Indeed, Brown was unlike any back before him, and some feel there has never been anyone better than Cleveland’s incomparable No. 32. At 6-foot-2, 230 pounds, he was dominant, relentless and without mercy, his highlight reels featuring runs around and right through opponents, fighting for every yard, dragging multiple defenders along or finding holes where none seemed to exist.

After Brown was tackled, he’d slowly rise and walk even more slowly back to the huddle — then dominate the defense when he got the ball again.

Off the field, Brown was a contentious character.

While he had a soft spot for those in need, and his generosity changed lives, he also was arrested a half-dozen times, mostly on charges of hitting women.

In June 1999, Brown’s wife, Monique, called 911, saying Brown had smashed her car with a shovel and threatened to kill her. During the trial, Monique Brown recanted. Jim Brown was acquitted of a charge of domestic threats but convicted of misdemeanor vandalism. The Los Angeles judge sentenced Brown to six months in jail when he refused to attend domestic violence counseling.

He also feuded with Browns coach Paul Brown and later with the team’s management, although he played his entire career with Cleveland.

When his playing days ended, Brown set off for Hollywood and eventually settled there. Brown advised Cleveland coach Blanton Collier of his retirement while the team was in training camp and he was on the set of “The Dirty Dozen” in England.

Among his films were “100 Rifles,” “Mars Attacks!” Spike Lee’s “He Got Game,” Oliver Stone’s “Any Given Sunday,” and the satire “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka,” in which he parodied the blaxploitation genre. In 2002, Brown was the subject of Lee’s HBO documentary “Jim Brown: All-American.”

In recent years, Brown’s relationship with the Browns was inconsistent. He served as an adviser to owner Randy Lerner and was hired to counsel the team’s younger players. However, in 2010, Brown parted ways with the team after having his role reduced by incoming team president Mike Holmgren. Brown felt slighted by the perceived demotion — when the club unveiled a “Ring of Honor” inside its downtown stadium, Brown didn’t attend the ceremony in protest.

Brown was an eight-time All-Pro and went to the Pro Bowl in each of his nine years in the league. When Brown walked away from the game at age 30, he held the league’s records for yards (12,312) and touchdowns (126).

And despite his bruising style, Browns never missed a game, playing in 118 straight.

“He told me, ‘Make sure when anyone tackles you he remembers how much it hurts,’” said Hall of Fame tight end John Mackey. “He lived by that philosophy and I always followed that advice.”

A two-sport star at Syracuse — some say he is the best lacrosse player in NCAA history — Brown endured countless racist taunts while playing at the virtually all-white school at the time. Still, he was an All-American in both sports, leading the nation in scoring, and lettered in basketball.

Brown was the sixth overall pick of the 1957 draft, joining a team that routinely played for the title. He was the Offensive Rookie of the Year that season.

Running behind an offensive line featuring Hall of Fame tackles Lou Groza and Mike McCormack, Brown set a league mark with 1,527 yards and scored 17 TDs on his way to the league’s Most Outstanding Player award — a precursor to the MVP — in 1958. Over the next three seasons, he never ran for less than 1,257 yards before picking up just 996 in 1962.

He led the NFL in rushing eight times, gaining a career-best 1,863 yards in 1963. He averaged 104 yards per game, scored 106 rushing touchdowns and averaged an astonishing 5.2 yards per carry. A dangerous receiver as well, Brown finished with 262 catches for 2,499 yards and another 20 TDs.

“I’ve said many times, and I will always say, Jim Brown is the best,” Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers once said, “and he will still be the best long after all his records are broken.”

Packers great Paul Hornung felt Brown was unstoppable.

“Give me Jim Brown over anybody — at anything,” he said.

Brown’s No. 32 was retired by the Browns in ’71, the same year he entered the Hall of Fame. But he rarely visited Cleveland during the 1970s and ’80s. He and Cleveland owner Art Modell were at odds over his sudden retirement; the two later patched up their differences and remained good friends.

Brown supported Modell’s decision to move Cleveland’s franchise to Baltimore in 1995. It was both a reflection of his loyalty to Modell and another sign of his fierce independence. Brown was one of the few former Browns players not angry with Modell for moving the team.

Many of the modern players couldn’t appreciate Brown or his impact on American sports.

“They have grown up in a different era,” former Browns coach Romeo Crennel said. “He’s one of the greatest players in NFL history and what he was able to accomplish in his time was tremendous. I don’t know that anybody could do what he did, the way he did it, under the circumstances that he had to operate and the things that he had to endure. And for him to go out on top, that’s something that not many guys are able to appreciate either.”

Born on Feb. 17, 1936, in St. Simons, Georgia, Brown was a multisport star at Manhasset High School on Long Island. He averaged 14.9 yards per carry in football and once scored 55 points in a game.

Brown later took up golf, and while playing with Jack Nicklaus in the 1963 Cleveland Pro-Am, he shot a 79.

Brown is survived by his second wife, Monique, and their child. He was divorced after 13 years of marriage from Sue Brown, with whom he had three children.

UPDATE 7:30 a.m. Saturday: According to jail records, Neef was booked into the Saline County Jail late Friday night.

On May 10, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office was attempting to arrest Byron Neef in the 1200 block of Talley Drive in Salina for outstanding felony warrants. 

After the deputy got one handcuff on Neef, Neef struck the deputy in the head and took off running in the area. The deputy was treated by EMS at the scene.

Neef is wanted for the felony warrants and is facing new requested charges for obstruction and battery of a law enforcement officer.

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just before 3:30 p.m Tuesday., a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Volkswagen Passat near 4th and Nebraska Street in Holton for an alleged traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The traffic stop led to the discovery of illegal narcotics.  The driver, Amber Dawn Grace, 40, of Blaine, was booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and drug paraphernalia

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon has overestimated the value of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ukraine-weapons-funding-security-war-russia-d27594b9b26beff6bcee4b7a2ec8424b">weapons it has sent to Ukraine</a>&nbsp;by at least $3 billion — an accounting error that could be a boon for the war effort because it will allow the Defense Department to send more weapons now without asking Congress for more money.

 </figure>WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon has overestimated the value of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ukraine-weapons-funding-security-war-russia-d27594b9b26beff6bcee4b7a2ec8424b">weapons it has sent to Ukraine</a>&nbsp;by at least $3 billion — an accounting error that could be a boon for the war effort because it will allow the Defense Department to send more weapons now without asking Congress for more money.The acknowledgment Thursday comes at a time when Pentagon is under increased pressure by Congress to show accountability for the billions of dollars it has sent in weapons, ammunition and equipment to Ukraine and as some lawmakers question whether that level of support should continue.It also could free up more money for critical weapons as Ukraine is on the verge of a much anticipated counteroffensive — which will require as much military aid as they can get.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/zelenskyy-europe-tour-weapons-jets-1cf0afe5bf3a3f5a51c5603aab2ccf5e">Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy</a>&nbsp;has previously said the offensive was delayed because they did not yet have everything they needed.The error was caused when officials overvalued some of the systems sent to Ukraine, using the value of money it would cost to replace an item completely rather than the current value of the weapon. In many of the military aid packages, the Pentagon has opted to draw from its stockpiles of older, existing gear because it can get those items to Ukraine faster.“During our regular oversight process of presidential drawdown packages, the Department discovered inconsistencies in equipment valuation for Ukraine. In some cases, ‘replacement cost’ rather than ‘net book value’ was used, therefore overestimating the value of the equipment drawn down from U.S. stocks,” said Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh.She added that the mistake hasn't constrained U.S. support to Ukraine or hampered the ability to send aid to the battlefield.A defense official said the Pentagon is still trying to determine exactly how much the total surplus will be. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said the comptroller has asked the military services to review all previous Ukraine aid packages using the proper cost figures. The result, said the official, will be that the department will have more available funding authority to use as the Ukraine offensive nears.The aid surplus was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.To date the U.S. has provided Ukraine nearly $37 billion in military aid since Russia invaded in February 2022. The bulk of that has been in weapons systems, millions of munitions and ammunition rounds, and an array of trucks, sensors, radars and other equipment pulled from Pentagon stockpiles and sent quickly to Ukraine.Members of Congress have repeatedly pressed Defense Department leaders on how closely the U.S. is tracking its aid to Ukraine to ensure that it is not subject to fraud or ending up in the wrong hands. The Pentagon has said it has a “robust program” to track the aid as it crosses the border into Ukraine and to keep tabs on it once it is there, depending on the sensitivity of each weapons system.There also is a small team of Americans in Ukraine working with Ukrainians to do physical inspections when possible, but also virtual inspections when needed, since those teams are not going to the front lines.In late February, the Pentagon’s inspector general said his office has found no evidence yet that any of the billions of dollars in weapons and aid to Ukraine has been lost to corruption or diverted into the wrong hands. He cautioned that those investigations are only in their early stages.
