Back to School: Start dates for Salina Post area school districts

SALINE COUNTY — The ground continues to shake in Saline County. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 3.3 magnitude earthquake just before 6:30p.m. Monday was centered approximately 3 miles east of Assaria. The Kansas Geological Survey reported the quake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.7. Moments later the KGS reported a 3.1 magnitude quake in the same area.

This is the fifth quake in that area since Saturday.

Just before 4:30p.m. Saturday, a quake measuring a magnitude 3.4 was reported 4.3 miles east of Assaria, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.&nbsp; A 2.7 magnitude quake shook the same area a short time later.

Just after 5:35p.m. Sunday the USGS reported a 3.3 magnitude quake approximately 4 miles southeast of Assaria.

There are no reports of damage and no calls about the quakes, according to the Saline County Sheriff's office.

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement continue to find drivers traveling far above the posted speed limit. Sometimes officers find even more.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol Troop H, Southeast Kansas Master Trooper Bales was on his way to a training class when he stopped a car on Interstate 135 south of Salina.&nbsp; The driver was traveling 104mph. He was also accused of transporting an open container, Driving under the influence and did not have a driver's license.&nbsp;

KHP: Driver with no license stopped for 104 mph, accused of DUI

Kristy Ann Foster (Pickett), 45, passed away on July 1, 2025 in Wichita, Ks surrounded by her family.

Kristy was born on May 20, 1980 to Thomas and Linda Pickett. She was the youngest of their three girls. She attended Ellsworth High School and graduated in 1999 and went on to earn her Associated Degree in Business Administration.

On September 16, 2006 Kristy married Nathan Foster and they had two beautiful children together, Jacob Thomas and Katelyn Ann Foster.

Kristy had lived and worked in Salina, KS for many years before moving to Park City, Ks. Her last employment was with Southeast of Saline as a food service director. She then became a full time stay at home mom.

Kristy was a devoted mother and member of the First United Methodist Church. Her favorite past time was cheering on her kids at their sporting events and spending time with her family.

Kristy was survived by her husband, Nathan and children Jacob and Katelyn, her mother Linda Pickett, grandmother Vivian Cranston, sisters Tammy Pickett (Jerry) and Amy Hubnik (Pat), in-laws Jim and Darlene Foster, brothers-in-law Jeremy (Tara) and Paul (Kary) Foster and 6 nieces and 3 nephews.

Kristy was proceeded in death by her grandparents Thomas and Beatrice Pickett and Donald Cranston, and her father Thomas Pickett Jr.

A memorial will be held for her at the First United Methodist Church at 122 N 8th St in Salina, Ks at 11:00 A.M. on July 19, 2025.

Donations can be made in her honor to Ryan's Mortuary for Jacob and Katelyn's education fund

The Southeast of Saline football team announced that it would hold its 10th annual Golf Scramble fundraiser on Saturday, August 2, at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

This event will feature two sessions, with 25 teams competing in the morning at 8:00, and 25 more teeing off in an afternoon session at 1:30.

Entry fees per four-person team will be $300, which covers green fees, cart fees and a meal held between the two sessions.

All proceeds benefit the defending 2A state champion SES football team.

10th Annual Trojan Football Golf Scramble to be held on August 2

Abagail Eklund, Age 25, passed away on June 17, 2025, in Salina, Kansas.

Abagail, also known as Abby, went to Southeast of Saline for her high school career and then went on to attend Fort Hays State University.

From the moment she could walk, Abagail was known for her strong will, bright spirit, and pure care for those around her. She radiated joy, love, grace, and unwavering faith, not only with her family and friends but also with those she had only just met. People often said she had a special gift for making others feel seen, heard, and instantly at ease, as if they had been friends for years. Her laughter told stories of its own, warm and comforting, like a hug that felt like coming home.

Abby had a nomadic soul and an adventurous heart, always ready to seize any opportunity to travel and experience life to the fullest. She never turned down a trip to the beach. She loved soaking up the sun, spending time with her family, and getting her well-earned tan. She was also fond of dressing up and sharing laughter while having a fun time with her friends and family. Many would say her spirit was in sync with the sun itself, as her smile had a way of lighting up any room she entered.

She found joy in the little things: listening to her favorite music, immersing herself in a good book, and attending live concerts whenever possible. But what mattered most to her was showing up for the people she loved. Whether it was a family gathering or cheering on her little sister Lilly at softball games, Abby always made time for those who meant the most to her.

Above all, her faith was at the center of everything she did. Though free-spirited and full of life, Abby remained grounded in her belief that God was greater than any challenge she&nbsp;faced.

God shaped Abby into a beautiful woman, someone who was kind, radiant, faithful, and deeply loving. She was a role model for her siblings, a light to her family, and a blessing to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Abby is survived by her father, Chad Eklund (Tracy), and her mother, Amber Banks (Scott); her siblings, Seth Eklund, Bryce Banks, Bryant Banks, Brooke Banks, Lilly Banks, Chelsea Sharma (Eshan), Riley Anderson, and Zayden Anderson. She is also survived by her aunts and uncles: Brandy Gillespie, Kelly Cole (Jeff), Jennifer Anderson (Josh), Melissa Holcom (Chasen), Jake Deatherage (Nicole), and Darrin Deatherage; and her grandparents, John

Eklund (Jeanette), Debbie Hayden, Glenda Eidet, Don Deatherage, Connie Johnson, and Tim Banks, and numerous cousins and friends.

A public viewing will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Roselawn Burial and Cremation (1920 E. Crawford St., Salina, KS 67401) on Friday, June 27. On Saturday, June 28, at 11:00 AM, the funeral service will be held at The Ark Church (2020 S. Ohio St., Salina, KS 67401), followed by a celebration of life at The Venue (638 Francis St., Salina, KS 67401).

The family is thankful for the incredible outpouring of love they’ve received during this difficult time. Bruce Charles Waddle, age 62, of Gypsum, passed away suddenly at his home on May 24, 2025.

Bruce&nbsp;was born&nbsp;March&nbsp;23,&nbsp;1963&nbsp;in&nbsp;Salina,&nbsp;KS, to&nbsp;Charles&nbsp;and&nbsp;Elaine Waddle.&nbsp;He&nbsp;was raised&nbsp;in Kipp, KS&nbsp;and&nbsp;was&nbsp;a 1981 graduate of&nbsp;Southeast&nbsp;of Saline High School, remaining&nbsp;very close with his classmates throughout his life. He married his&nbsp;wife of 42 years,&nbsp;Tammy Waddle,&nbsp;in 1982, and they settled in&nbsp;Gypsum, KS&nbsp;where they raised&nbsp;their son.

Bruce’s&nbsp;parents began Waddle’s Heating and Cooling in 1973 when he was 10 years old. He grew up helping in the shop and learning from his father. Eventually, Bruce&nbsp;took&nbsp;over the family business&nbsp;and was the owner until his&nbsp;passing.&nbsp;He was a jack of all trades and took great pride in his work.&nbsp;

Bruce&nbsp;was a&nbsp;very&nbsp;kind and generous man who was always thinking of&nbsp;others. He was a member of several groups within the community. He was also&nbsp;a devoted volunteer fire fighter&nbsp;with&nbsp;Saline County Rural Fire District #1. He&nbsp;volunteered with them&nbsp;for&nbsp;over&nbsp;42 years.

In his free time, he enjoyed going to auctions, hunting, working on his fire truck, and spending time with his grandchildren, Olivia and Keith. He enjoyed taking them fishing and to the races. They were the light of his&nbsp;life,&nbsp;and he loved them very much.&nbsp;

Bruce was preceded in death by an infant daughter and his grandparents, Arnold and Theresa Swanson and Clifford and Margaret Waddle.

Bruce is survived by his parents Charles and Elaine; his wife Tammy; his son and daughter-in-law Wade and Tiffany; his brother Brad (Liz); his sister Christine (Robbie);&nbsp;and grandchildren Olivia and Keith.

Visitation will be at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 from 4:00 -8:00 pm. with family present from 5:00 -7:00 pm.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 29, 2025 at 10:00 am at St. John’s Lutheran Church 302 S. 7th&nbsp;St, Salina.&nbsp; Burial will follow at Poheta Cemetery.&nbsp; A meal will be served at Saline County Rural Fire District #1&nbsp;fire station in Kipp, KS&nbsp;following the burial.&nbsp; Please dress&nbsp;casual.

 </figure>Bruce Charles Waddle, age 62, of Gypsum, passed away suddenly at his home on May 24, 2025.Bruce&nbsp;was born&nbsp;March&nbsp;23,&nbsp;1963&nbsp;in&nbsp;Salina,&nbsp;KS, to&nbsp;Charles&nbsp;and&nbsp;Elaine Waddle.&nbsp;He&nbsp;was raised&nbsp;in Kipp, KS&nbsp;and&nbsp;was&nbsp;a 1981 graduate of&nbsp;Southeast&nbsp;of Saline High School, remaining&nbsp;very close with his classmates throughout his life. He married his&nbsp;wife of 42 years,&nbsp;Tammy Waddle,&nbsp;in 1982, and they settled in&nbsp;Gypsum, KS&nbsp;where they raised&nbsp;their son.Bruce’s&nbsp;parents began Waddle’s Heating and Cooling in 1973 when he was 10 years old. The National Weather Service has issued a forecast calling for multiple rounds of thunderstorms and heavy rain from Friday, May 23rd through Sunday night, May 25th. Thunderstorms are anticipated to occur periodically throughout Russell, Hutchinson and Salina till 3:00 pm and a second round after 7:00 pm on Friday. Very low chance of thunderstorms to occur for Saturday.

Areas such as Chanute and Coffeyville are on a "flood watch" from Friday till Sunday night. Salina is in the "low rainfall" amount range for this weekend.&nbsp;Although confidence is highest for flooding in southeast Kansas, Saline County residents should still remain alert. The risk of severe storms today and again Sunday night makes early preparation critical.

The National Weather Service recommends people to closely monitor weather alerts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Rainfall totals over the next 72 hours could lead to hazardous travel and localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and intersections with poor drainage.&nbsp;

Multiple rounds of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall expected for southeast Kansas and parts of North Central Kansas

Southeast of Saline’s Lady Trojans battled to the very end of a low-scoring pitchers’ duel on Thursday, but came up a run shy of Silver Lake, falling in the regional final 4-3.

Karlee Zurfluh and Kendra Cook were both masterful in the circle, allowing just seven runs on eleven hits in a game that came down to a thrilling seventh inning.

Silver Lake wasted no time opening the scoring, as Kailyn Hanni led the game off with a walk, stole second, and came in to score on an RBI knock from Taylor Zordell.

SES quickly responded with a Kyiah Samuelson RBI single and a Kimber Ogorzolka solo shot to take a 2-1 lead in the second.

The Lady Eagles would flip that script two innings later when Kira Lowry drove a ball into the gap, plating two more runs to flip a one-run deficit to a one-run lead.

After surrendering those runs in the bottom of the first, Cook tightened the screws, setting down 15 batters in a row and taking a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
