Hello and happy Thursday, everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine…

It took nearly a decade for the Kansas City Royals to return to the playoffs but the wait was well worth it as on Wednesday, Bobby Witt Jr. beat out an infield single to drive in the go-ahead run, sending the Kansas City Royals into an AL Division Series with a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles with a two-game sweep of their Wild Card Series.

With two outs and runners at the corners in sixth inning, Witt hit a grounder to the edge of the dirt behind second base, where Jordan Westburg made a diving stop and throw to first. But Witt was already there after flying 90 feet in 4.14 seconds, allowing Kyle Isbel to score from third.

Kansas City, which endured two seven-game losing streaks over the final month of the season, advanced to face the AL East champion New York Yankees. Game 1 is Saturday in the Bronx.

Staying in Kansas City, on Wednesday the NFL announced that Chris Jones had been named AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Jones recorded four tackles and two sacks in the Chiefs’ 17-10 over the Chargers, helping Kansas City improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2018. Both of Jones’ sacks came on pivotal third downs, including one late in the fourth quarter.

And finally The Chiefs, the Kansas City community and members of Chiefs Kingdom around the world raised $1 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City through flag sales during Red Wednesday.
