Sacred Heart Pulls Away from Council Grove in Doubleheader Sweep

Sacred Heart traveled to Council Grove on Friday night and, although both the boys and girls were in close battles for the majority of both games, the Knights swept the doubleheader.

In the opener of the doubleheader, the Lady Knights fell behind 3-0 and 5-2 in the first couple of minutes, but would take their first lead with the score 6-5.

Although the Lady Braves hung tough despite coming in with a 3-12 record, Sacred Heart would have the scoring advantage for the remainder of the game. Sacred Heart slowly and steadily pulled away as the game went on.

The Lady Knights led 12-8 after the opening quarter and 21-15 at halftime. Katie Weiss scored 13 of her game-high 22 points in the opening half.

Sacred Heart led by 11 after three quarters and, after going up by as many as 15 points, came away with a 42-29 road win. 

Avery Eshleman added nine points for Sacred Heart. Skylar Douglas scored six and Adelyn Lee added five more.

Sacred Heart is now 11- 6 overall and 3-4 in the NCAA league.

Sacred Heart boys 65, Council Grove 48

Neither the Knights nor the Braves were shy about getting the game off and running as the teams combined for 39 first-quarter points. Sacred Heart led 22-17 heading into the second quarter, but a 7-0 run by Council Grove back ahead.

The teams traded baskets for the rest of the first half as the Knights led by a single point at 31-30 after the opening 16 minutes. An early 9-0 third quarter by the Knights gave them their first double-figure advantage although it was still a six-point game at 45-39 heading into the final period.

Council Grove was outscored 20-9 as Sacred Heart pulled away for a 65-48 road win. In the 65-48 victory, four Knights scored in double-figures.

Will Tuttle scored 14, Michael Matteucci added 13, Jett Samuelson had a season-high of 11 points, and Evan Bogart added ten more. Sacred Heart improves to 15-2 overall and remain 5-2 in the NCAA league.

The Knights will now turn their attention to Beloit as the Trojans will be in Salina for a boys and girls twinbill on Tuesday night. Pregame is scheduled for 5:50 pm with the girls tipoff at 6pm and the boys to follow.
