Late Sunday night, Salina Police Department officers and Salina Firefighters responded to a vehicle fully engulfed in flames after it struck a support pillar under Interstate 135 at West Cloud Street and Centennial Road intersection.
SPD Capt. James Feldman said at 11 p.m., Sunday, March 24, officers and local emergency services arrived at the Cloud and Centennial intersection and found the Toyota car with its driver deceased.
The impact and fire damaged the vehicle so severely that officers found it difficult to determine many details at the scene.
"It's hard to say [where the victim was located] with the way the scene was," Feldman said. "We're still actively investigating it."
Officers will transport the body to a lab in Kansas City for an autopsy and identification. Feldman confirmed there was only one person in the vehicle.
The extensive damage to the car destroyed the vehicle's identification number (VIN), making it difficult to track down the vehicle's owner.
"We may have an idea who it is, but we just can't say for sure," Feldman said. "The car was fully engulfed."
