Salina Commissioners have appointed a member to fill the vacant seat after Jerry Ivey's resignation.

After a 3-1 vote, Gary Norris was appointed and he will serve the unexpired term.

Norris will officially be adopted as a city commissioner at the next public meeting on September 14.

Before the vote, each of the commissioners gave a nomination of who they would like to fill the vacant seat.

Dr. Trent Davis nominated Gary Norris; Greg Lenkiewicz nominated Haley Helzer; Doug Rempp nominated Brian Weisel and Mayor Mike Hoppock said each of the commissioners selected one of his nominees.

The vote started with Davis' nomination and the vote was 3-1, with Rempp voting "nay."

The seat’s term runs through January 2028.

Since July 24, there has been a vacant seat for the city commission following Ivey's resignation.

Ivey was elected to the Salina City Commission in November 2023 and officially began serving his four-year term in January 2024.
