In 1886, the Great Kansas Blizzard struck with little warning. The blizzard actually raged from Iowa and Nebraska, then south across Kansas to Oklahoma and Texas. The astonishing event lasted NEARLY A WEEK. For much of this period, winds averaged around 40 mph and reduced visibilities to as low as 15 feet. In Kansas, an estimated 80 percent of the cattle perished with heavy losses in the other states. In Kansas, between 50 and 100 people froze to death, while 20 reportedly died in Iowa.

Talk about 'fowl' weather. In 1988, it was especially 'fowl' for North Texas and much of Arkansas as a winter storm invaded the region. Heavy snow buried much of Arkansas with 10 to 15-inch accumulations. In North Central Arkansas, 16 inches overwhelmed Heber Springs, where around 3.5 million chickens died. In North Central Texas, ice and snow accumulations of 2 to 3 inches killed another 1.75 million chickens.

In 1880, Seattle was hit by what really was their "Snowstorm of the Century." Actually, it was their worst snowstorm of all time as the historic event overwhelmed the Emerald City with around 4 feet of snow. Hundreds of barns were destroyed and all transportation was halted.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Following is an annual 2022 climate summary for Salina, with weather maps for the state.

The average annual temperature was 56.3 degrees, 0.5 degrees warmer than average. 2022 tied for the 47th warmest year since records began in 1900.

The hottest daily temperature was 106 degrees on July 15&nbsp; and 19, and the coldest was 7 below zero on Dec. 22.

Eighty-three days reached at least 90 degrees, which was 15 days above average. That tied for the 23rd most 90-degree days on record, and the most since&nbsp;2018.&nbsp;

Twenty-two days reached at least 100 degrees, which was six days above average. That tied for the 34th most 100-degree days on record, and the most since 2017.&nbsp;

132 mornings were 32 degrees or colder, which was 17 days above average. That tied for the 16th most 32-degree mornings on record and the most since 2019.

Precipitation-wise, 27.37 inches was measured, which was 2.32 inches below average. The greatest 24-hour total was 2.47 inches on July 2.

The average wind speed for Salina was 11.1 mph. The highest wind speed was 58 mph on April 29. The highest wind gust was 79 mph, also on April 29.

Salina was slightly warmer, drier in 2022, weather service reports

The average monthly temperature in December at Salina Municipal Airport was 30.8 degrees, which was 2.1 degrees cooler than average. It was the 33rd coolest December since records began in 1900, and the coolest since 2013. 

The warmest daily temperature was 69 degrees on Dec. 2, and the coldest was 7 below zero on Dec. 22. Two mornings dropped below zero during the month, which was the most December below zero readings since 2016. 

Precipitation-wise, 0.93 inches was measured at the airport, which was only 0.19 inches below the monthly average.

We had a beautiful start to the Christmas weekend with a colorful sunrise Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, the Christmas Weekend forecast will begin with the lingering Arctic chill as high temperatures will only be in the 20s on Saturday.

Christmas day will be a bit warmer, with highs in the 30s to lower 40s.

UPDATE 8 a.m. Saturday: The National Weather Service has revised its forecast for Christmas night. It is as follows.

There is a chance of a light wintry mix Sunday night into early Monday morning. Light freezing rain, freezing drizzle and light snow will be possible across parts of central and eastern Kansas.

Very cold wind chills as low as 15 below zero are forecast.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a wind chill advisory in effect from 6 p.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

Wind chills in the 15 degree below zero to 25 below zero range are forecast.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a wind chill advisory in effect until noon Saturday for the following counties in our area.

The advisory replaces the wind chill warning.
