CoCoRaHS 24-hour rain totals

October brought unusually high temperatures and dry conditions to Salina, with temperatures reaching levels not seen in more than 60 years.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, Salina recorded an average temperature of 63.5°F in October, a full 6.5 degrees above average. This made it the eighth warmest October since 1900—record highs, including a sweltering 97°F on October 5.

Salina received only 0.99 inches of rain, falling 1.17 inches below average, making it the 29th driest October. This lack of rainfall worsened drought conditions across central Kansas, with parts of Saline County categorized as experiencing severe drought.

Early November rains bring temporary drought relief

The first week of November brought much-needed rainfall to central Kansas, with Salina receiving approximately 1.5-2 inches of rain since the beginning of the month. NWS meteorologist Kevin Dharamfal explained the positive impact of these rains.

“It’s still dry. There are some areas of moderate drought out towards Russell and Great Bend,” Dharamfal said. “In the Salina area, especially along I-135 to Wichita, where we’ve seen severe and even extreme drought in recent months, the situation has gradually improved with these rainfall events.”

Dharamfal cautioned that ongoing precipitation events are crucial for sustained drought recovery.&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/8327a820-d273-4a7f-8445-83e303a5eeab">The Cheney Reservoir,</a>&nbsp;a critical water source for Wichita, remains low despite recent rainfall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Cheney responded somewhat,” Dharamfal said, “But it’s going to take several more events like this to really add significantly more water to the reservoir.”

The recent rainfall has also lowered the immediate risk of wildfires. Dharamfal noted that cooler November temperatures and frequent rain have “muted” fire hazards for now.

“If we continue to see the cooler temperatures and more frequent precipitation, then it's going to keep the threat for wildfires muted as we go through the rest of the month,” Dharamfal said.&nbsp;

Looking ahead, the NWS anticipates that La Niña will shape this winter’s climate. The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) gives a 60% chance that La Niña will form between September and November 2024 and continue through at least March 2025. Recent sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific have been near or below average, signaling La Niña’s development.

If this trend continues, Kansas can expect a warmer and drier-than-average winter. Specifically, the CPC forecasts that from November 2024 through January 2025, Kansas will likely experience above-average temperatures, with southwest Kansas seeing below-average precipitation.

This dry winter could mean that Salina’s recent drought relief may be short-lived. Dharamfal warned that if conditions dry out, the moisture deficit could return by early spring, increasing wildfire risks.

“If we see a warmer, drier winter, as is possible with La Niña, our next potential for a significant wildfire season would be in the spring, before things start to green up,” Dharamfal said.

For Salina, La Niña could lead to limited rain or snowfall through January, which may strain soil moisture and water supplies. While residents can enjoy the current relief from drought, the winter forecast indicates that this moisture respite may not last, as Kansas faces a likely warmer and drier season.

A freeze warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Wichita, remaining in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. The warning applies to portions of central and south-central Kansas, including Saline, Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Chase, Reno, and Harvey counties.

Temperatures are expected to drop as low as 28°F during this period. The sub-freezing conditions may result in frost, which could damage crops, sensitive vegetation, and unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions to protect plants and outdoor water systems before the cold sets in.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a freeze watch for much of central and south-central Kansas, including Saline County. The watch is in effect from late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, as sub-freezing temperatures could drop as low as 29 degrees in some areas.

The affected region includes cities such as Salina, McPherson, Hutchinson, Great Bend, and Marion, where residents should take precautions to protect sensitive plants, crops, and outdoor plumbing from potential frost and freeze damage.

The freeze watch highlights the risk to agricultural crops and any outdoor plants that may still be thriving in mid-October. Gardeners and farmers are encouraged to take preventive measures by covering plants or moving them indoors where possible. Additionally, outdoor pipes should be insulated or drained to avoid possible freezing and damage.

The freezing conditions are expected to develop late Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday morning.

Frost occurs when there is a solid deposition of water vapor from the air. Frost will form when solid surfaces are cooled below the dew point. An air temperature range of 33°- 36° (or colder), along with light winds, is usually needed to initiate frost formation. At least minor damage is possible to plants. One must keep in mind that frost is not guaranteed if the air is very dry and/or winds are roughly 8+ MPH.&nbsp;

NWS weekly weather forecast

Salina and much of Kansas continue to face persistent drought conditions. With winter just around the corner, National Weather Service (NWS) Meteorologist James Cuellar explained that the ongoing transition to La Niña is likely to bring drier-than-normal conditions through the fall, winter, and even early spring.

"There's a couple of other climate oscillations that are also occurring out there in the Pacific Ocean, like sea surface temperature variability out there that can influence weather here," Cuellar said. "Not just La Nina, but there's also a couple of others, and pretty much they all point to a drier than normal fall, winter and probably early spring for much, much of the central portions of the country."

According to the NWS, La Niña is likely to develop between September and November 2024, with a 71% chance, and continue through January to March 2025. 

In August 2024, conditions in the Pacific Ocean remained neutral, with sea surface temperatures close to average. Wind patterns and temperature measurements suggest that La Niña is forming, but it is expected to be weak and short-lived.

Current forecasts, based on models, predict this La Niña will be less intense, meaning it may not have the typical strong winter effects. However, it could still influence seasonal weather predictions.

Cuellar said precipitation similar to the marginal rain Kansas received in September 2024 is to be expected sparsely throughout the fall.&nbsp;

"We could get some rain events here and there, kind of similar to what we got in the middle of September. Right now things don't particularly look great in terms of eroding our drought conditions," Cuellar said.

Salina is currently experiencing an eight-inch precipitation deficit for the year, and drought conditions are expected to worsen. The effects of the drought can also be seen in extreme temperature swings.

"Typically, whenever it's drier, it's a lot easier to get pretty big temperature swings," Cuellar said. "If we were to have a little more moisture in the ground, it would be a lot more difficult for us to dry out during the day.&nbsp;

September temperatures were mostly above average across central, south-central, and southeast Kansas. Despite this, many recorded their coolest September since 2020.&nbsp;Wichita experienced both a record high of 102 degrees and much cooler temperatures dropping to 52 degrees on September 25.

"In 2021 we had a somewhat wet beginning of the summer and then it fell off in the wintertime. Then in 2022 we actually got really, really wet spring, which was one of the wettest Mays on record, but then the tap immediately shut off again," Cuellar said. "And ever since the summer of 2022 we just really haven't seen precipitation. Even if we do have above-average precipitation month, it just hasn't been nearly enough to make up the deficits that we build-up."

While drought conditions have not yet escalated the risk of wildfires in the area, Cuellar cautioned that an early freeze followed by a return to warm, dry conditions could increase fire weather potential later in the season. For now, the vegetation has retained enough moisture to prevent significant wildfire risk.
